Abstract:We systematically investigate the manifestations of the condensed-phase environment of the structure II clathrate hydrate in the translation-rotation (TR) dynamics and the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra of an H2 molecule confined in the small dodecahedral cage of the hydrate. The aim is to elucidate the extent to which these properties are affected by the clathrate water molecules beyond the confining cage and the proton disorder of the water framework. For this purpose, quantum calculations of the TR eigenstates and INS spectra are performed for H2 inside spherical clathrate domains of gradually increasing radius and the number of water molecules ranging from 20 for the isolated small cage to more than 1800. For each domain size, several hundred distinct hydrogen-bonding topologies are constructed in order to simulate the effects of the proton disorder. Our study reveals that the clathrate-induced splittings of the j = 1 rotational level and the translational fundamental of the guest H2 are influenced by the condensed-phase environment to a dramatically different degree, the former very strongly and the latter only weakly.
Ultrafast Fabrication of Lignin-Encapsulated Silica Nanoparticles Reinforced Conductive Hydrogels with High Elasticity and Self-Adhesion for Strain Sensors

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels are receiving considerable attention because of their important applications, such as flexible wearable electronic, human-machine interfaces, and smart/soft robotics. However, the insufficient mechanical performance and inferior adhesive capability severely hinder the potential applications in such an emerging field. Herein, a highly elastic conductive hydrogel that integrated mechanical robustness, self-adhesiveness, UV-filtering, and stable electrical performance was achieved by the synergistic effect of sulfonated lignin-coated silica nanoparticles (LSNs), polyacrylamide (PAM) chains, and ferric ions (Fe3+). In detail, the dynamic redox reaction was constructed between the catechol groups of LSNs and Fe3+, which could promote the rapid gelation of the acrylamide (AM) monomers in 60 s. The optimized conductive hydrogels containing 1.5 wt % LSNs as the dynamic junction points exhibited the excellent elasticity (<15% hysteresis ratio), high stretchability (∼1100% elongation), and improved mechanical robustness (tensile and compressive strength of ∼180 kPa and ∼480 kPa). Notably, the abundant catechol groups of LSNs endowed the conductive hydrogels with the long-lasting and robust self-adhesion, enabling seamless adhesion to the human skin. Meanwhile, the catechol groups also provided an exceptional UV-blocking capability (∼95.1%) for the conductive hydrogels. The combined advantages of the conductive hydrogels were manifested in flexible sensors for the high-fidelity detection of various mechanical deformations over a wide range of strain (10–200%) with good repeatability and stability. We believed that the designed conductive hydrogels may become a promising candidate material in future flexible wearable electronics for long-term and stable human movements monitoring.

Abstract:<p>The development of conductive, soft, ultra-stretchable, and asymmetrically adhesive hydrogels is difficult and essential for both wearable electronics and anti-adhesion tissue dressings. In particular, there is still no simple, effective and universal approach to construct an asymmetrically adhesive multifunctional hydrogel. Here, we first synthesized lignosulfonate sodium (LS)-doped PAA hydrogels with uniform adhesion (adhesive strength: ~30.5 kPa), conductivity (~0.45 S/m), stretchability (up to ~2250%), and low compressive modulus (~20 kPa). In the second step, an oriented soaking of Fe<sup>3+</sup> onto the upper surface of the resultant composite hydrogel renders the upper surface non-adhesive. This novel strategy masterfully delivers asymmetric adhesion behavior to the upper and bottom surfaces of the same hydrogel (~0 kPa adhesive strength for the upper surface; strong adhesive strength of ~27 kPa for the bottom surface). The asymmetric adhesive hydrogel has proven to adhere well onto the human skin and achieve waste-barrier. Importantly, this hydrogel assembled pressure sensor demonstrates excellent anti-interference and wearable comfort.</p>

Abstract:Ionic conductive hydrogels prepared from various biological macromolecules are ideal materials for the manufacture of human motion sensors from the perspective of resource regeneration and environmental sustainability. However, it is still challenging to prepare hydrogels with both high toughness and self-healing ability. In this study, lignin-based β-CD-PVA (LCP) self-healing conductive hydrogels with high tensile properties were prepared by one-step method using alkali lignin as a plasticizer. Compared with PVA hydrogel, the maximum storage modulus and elongation were increased by 2.5 and 20.0 times, respectively. Uniform distribution of lignin can increase the fluidity and distance of polymer molecular chains, thus improving the viscoelastic and tensile properties of the LCP self-healing hydrogel. LCP hydrogels can maintain self-healing ability in both high (45 °C) and low temperature (0 °C) environments, and the self-healing ability is not affected by pH. Moreover, it also has good conductivity, anti-bacterial, thermostability, and anti-UV property, which has a good application prospect in the field of 3D printing and wearable electronic devices, which expands the efficient utilization of lignin in biorefinery.

Abstract:Abstract The flexibility and functionality of conductive hydrogels are crucial to applications under various scenarios and complex environments. Due to single functionality and weakness in mechanical properties, the application of conductive hydrogels in flexible wearable devices remains a challenge. In this study, lignin‐graft‐poly(acrylic acid) (LPAA) was incorporated into acrylamide (AM)/sodium chloride (NaCl) solution to fabricate composite conductive hydrogels. NaCl enhanced the conductivity of hydrogels. The hydrogen‐bond crosslinking network was formed by adding LPAA into the hydrogel, which enhanced the mechanical properties of the hydrogel (the tensile strength was 96 kPa and the compressive strength was 0.54 MPa). With LPAA added, the adhesion of hydrogels was improved to 11.3 kPa on glass, 14.2 kPa on plastic, and 17.3 kPa on metal. LPAA also provided excellent UV shielding ability (99.95%) for hydrogels while maintaining good transparency. The conductive hydrogels with good sensitivity (Gauge Factor = 2.51, 100%–500%) and stability can be used as strain sensors for monitoring physical activity. It is expected to be a candidate material for future flexible wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted tremendous attention as a novel generation of wearable devices and body monitoring due to their great stretchability and high flexibility. Here, a multifunctional cellulose nanocrystal @sodium lignosulfonate-silver-poly(acrylamide) nanocomposite hydrogel was prepared by radical polymerization within only a few minutes. This polymerization rapidly occurred by lignosulfonate-silver (Ls-Ag) dynamic catalysis that efficiently activated ammonium persulfate (APS) to initiate the free-radical polymerization. In particular, the hydrogel exhibited excellent tensile strength (406 kPa), ultrahigh stretchability (1880 %), self-recovery, and fatigue resistance. Furthermore, due to the inclusion of Ls-Ag metal ion nanocomposite in the hydrogels, the composite hydrogel presented repeated adhesion to various objects, excellent conductivity (σ ∼ 9.5 mS cm −1 ), remarkable UV resistance (100 % shielding of the UV spectral region), and high antibacterial activity (above 98 %), which enabled the hydrogel to be applied to epidermal sensors. In addition, the high-sensitivity (gauge factor of 2.46) sensor constructed of the hydrogel monitored the large and subtle movements of the human body and was used as a biological electrode to collect human electromyography and electrocardiographic signals. This work provided a novel strategy for the high-value utilization of lignin, which had potential application prospects in many fields such as wearable bioelectrodes.

Abstract:Flexible conductive hydrogels hold great promise for applications in motion and medical detection. It is difficult to produce conductive hydrogel epidermal sensors in wearable hydrogels with dependable adhesion, sensing, and wound-healing properties. Nano-Fe3O4 was used as physical cross-linking points in the polyacrylamide/polyvinyl alcohol double network (PP) to increase the strain capacity of the hydrogel. The conductive lignin-dopamine (LD) was immobilized on the surface of Fe3O4 particles, and the LD-coated Fe3O4 was then incorporated into the double network hydrogel to create the PP/LD/Fe3O4 hydrogel. This work was done to look into the possibility of using Fe3O4 hydrogels as flexible strain sensors. The addition of LD/Fe3O4 caused the composite hydrogel to strain up to 124 %, with a modulus of elasticity of 21,308 Pa and electrical conductivity as high as 2.3 S•m-1 following the introduction of LD/Fe3O4. Moreover, the PP/LD/Fe3O4 hydrogel's adhesive qualities offered adequate antimicrobial properties and promoted wound healing. These results indicate that the developed electricity-responsive and tissue-adhesive hydrogel dressing offers a candidate to serve as a tissue sealant for wound healing.

Abstract:Hydrogels have drawn intensive attention as emerging materials for various applications in wearable sensors, soft robotics, and implantable devices. However, fabricating hydrogels with UV-shielding and antioxidant properties still remains a challenge. Herein, we prepared biocompatible 3-allyloxy-2-hydroxypropyl-lignin/polyacrylic acid (AHP-lignin/PAA) hydrogels with self-adhesion, conductivity, UV shielding, and antioxidant activity as wearable sensors by the incorporation of lignin into PAA. The structure, lap shear strength, and biocompatibility were characterized using the UV-vis spectrometer, universal testing machine, and cell test. The hydrogels showed strong adhesion to various substrates. The AHP-lignin/PAA hydrogels had excellent UV shielding and free radical scavenging capacity. Meanwhile, AHP-lignin/PAA hydrogels exhibited excellent sensitivity to tiny changes in low pressure. Notably, the hydrogels could adhere to the skin well without any other adhesives to monitor the movement signals of the body motion accurately. The biocompatible AHP-lignin/PAA hydrogels with self-adhesion, conductivity, UV shielding, and antioxidant activity offer great potential applications in wearable sensors.
A self-healing, long-lasting adhesive, lignin-based polyvinyl alcohol organo-hydrogel for strain-sensing applications

Abstract:Hydrogel-based flexible sensors have garnered considerable interest in the fields of soft electronics, robotics, and human-machine interfaces. For better practical applications, integrating multiple properties-such as self-adhesive, anti-freeze, anti-volatile, self-healing, and antibacterial-into a single gel for flexible sensors remains a challenge. In this paper, a multifunctional lignin-based polyvinyl alcohol gel, containing dynamic covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, and coordination bonds, is constructed by a simple one-pot method, in which ethylene glycol/water chosen as a binary solvent and KI as a conductive medium. The resulting organogel exhibits self-healing, long-lasting adhesion, UV shielding, antibacterial properties, excellent frost resistance (-20 °C), and volatile resistance properties. In addition, the organogel-based sensor demonstrates satisfactory sensitivity in detecting joint movements and facial expressions. This study provides a new strategy for developing a versatile flexible sensor through the introduction of renewable and bio-based lignin, promising applications in the fields of wearable electronics.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogel is a promising material for flexible sensors due to its good electrical conductivity, adhesion, and high sensitivity. However, the challenge of integrating conductive fillers like liquid metals lies in their poor interface compatibility, which adversely affects their mechanical strength and lifespan. Addressing the challenge of achieving both mechanical strength and conductivity, this study harnessed 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-oxidized lignin to form a stable interface between the liquid metal (LM) and the hydrogel system. Furthermore, this innovation (lignin-LM) facilitates the free radical polymerization of acrylic acid (PAA) at room temperature, resulting in conductive hydrogels. These hydrogels demonstrated excellent self-healing, adhesive, tensile, and antibacterial properties, alongside high strain sensing accuracy and stable electrical output in flexible sensor applications. In conclusion, the PAA-Lignin-LM hydrogel holds excellent promise for wearable, flexible electronic products, introducing a novel approach for the high-value utilization of lignin.

Abstract:As for conductive hydrogel, the conflicting issue between good integration capability and simplicity of fabrication restricts the potential applications. Here, mechanical flexible conductive hydrogels with temperature tolerance are rapidly fabricated (≈seconds) by a facile dual catalytic system. Benefiting from enhanced polymer network and hybrid conductive path, advanced hydrogels show versatile applications in smart sensing fields even in complex surroundings. Advanced conductive hydrogels demonstrate substantial potential for wearable devices. Nevertheless, the transformative advance in soft electronics raises harsh requirements on the hydrogel candidates, such as rapid and on‐site fabrication, mechanical flexibility, high sensitivity, and wide use temperature. Here, this problem is overcome by incorporating a dual catalytic system based on lignin‐modified MXene‐Fe3+ into commercial hydrogels. This system 1) can form a composite hydrogel in a time scale of min at ambient condition without the supply of external energy, 2) incorporates multiple enhanced strategies into polymer chains, and 3) constructs well‐organized hybrid conductive network. The fabricated hydrogel displays an improved and balanced overall performance, including high ductility (2139%), moderate electrical conductivity, and strong temperature tolerance (−70–50 °C). Combined with the great merits of above performance, the hydrogel‐based sensor with good sensing (maximum GF: 2.8), stable repeatability (200% for 200 cycles), and wide work window of 0%–947%, thereby disclosing promising application in physiological movements, such as motion recognition and breathing state detection. Sensationally, even in complex or harsh surroundings, the sensors also produce stable and reliable signal output. Together, the strategy provides a new mentality of designing hydrogel materials for booming and advanced wearable electronics.

Lignin-induced rapid polymerization of asymmetrical adhesion Janus gel for strain sensor

Abstract:Functional hydrogel sensors have shown explosive growth in the health and medical fields. However, the uniform adhesion and the complicated polymerization process of hydrogels seriously hinder their further development. Herein, inspired by the layered structure of human skin, we prepare a Janus gel using in-situ polymerization. Based on the lignin-Fe3+ dual catalytic system, the rapid polymerization of the gel was achieved at room temperature. By tailoring the mass ratio of lignin and Fe3+ in the precursor, the adhesion of the upper and bottom layers can be easily adjusted. In addition, hydrophobic association is introduced into the upper layer to improve the gel's mechanical properties. The obtained asymmetric bilayer gel has a significant difference in adhesion (7 times), and exhibits excellent mechanical properties in the elongation at break (1437 %) and the breaking strength (463.2 kPa). Moreover, the bilayer gel also has good freezing and UV resistance. We use the bilayer gel as a wearable strain sensor, which shows a wide strain detection range of 0-800 % (maximum gauge factor = 5.3). The proposed simple strategy avoids UV irradiation and heating processes, which provides a new idea for the rapid polymerization of multifunctional Janus hydrogels with adjustable performances.
Innovative wearable solutions: Semi-releasing ion-conductive lignin hydrogel sensors for enhanced practicability

Abstract:The severe negative effects of impurities adhering to the external surface of wearable devices can significantly influence the signal transmission, performance, and lifespan of hydrogel sensors. Herein, we developed an ion-conducting hydrogel sensor with a strong adhesive side and a non-adhesive side, similar to a "semi-releasing material." This hydrogel, formulated using deep eutectic solvents obtained from choline chloride and acrylic acid, contained lignin. This versatile material, exhibiting properties similar to semi-releasing materials, was treated with an AlCl3 solution on one side. Additionally, the hydrogel was successfully used as a highly adhesive strain sensor for real-time monitoring of various human activity signals. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrated excellent environmental tolerance and conductivity. Lignin extracted from wood flour endowed the hydrogel sensor with excellent adhesion energy (up to 427.1 J/m2) and UV resistance. Treatment of hydrogels with AlCl3 completely eliminated their adhesiveness, thereby enhancing fracture elongation and tensile strength. This improvement can be attributed to the absence of carboxyl groups and the formation of a metal-phenolic network. The implementation of this convenient and efficient strategy provides a more feasible approach to address challenges related to impurity adhesion and signal transmission in flexible wearable devices.

Abstract:The application of natural polymers to hydrogel materials with stretchable and compressible properties has attracted more and more attention. However, hydrogel materials made of pure natural polymers are not only poor in mechanical properties, but also lack in stability and sensitivity in strain sensors. Herein, the ionic conductive lignin hydrogels with highly stretchable (tensile strain ∼525.1%) and compressible (compression strain ∼95%) performance were formulated by a simple solution blending method. The lignin-based hydrogel with ultra-self-adhesive properties was able to adhere to various hydrophobic or hydrophilic surfaces. The adhesion measured on stainless steel, plexiglass, and paper reached 307 kPa, 301 kPa, and 174 kPa, respectively. Moreover, lignin-based hydrogels can be used as reliable and stable strain sensors to respond to environmental stimuli. Good adhesion can make hydrogels closer to the skin, so as to more accurately detect human signals, and excellent ion conduction ability can meet the needs of monitoring wrist bending activities. Significantly, the various properties of lignin-based hydrogel can be controlled through rationally adjusting the chemical composition of the hydrogel. It was proved that lignin-based hydrogel with natural-based formulation, high mechanical properties, and adhesion performance has great application potential in flexible equipment.

Abstract:Hydrogels, including PVA hydrogels, have numerous applications in many fields; however, their poor mechanical strength limits their utilization potential. Lignin, the most abundant aromatic biopolymer in nature from lignocellulosic biomass, is presently under-utilized. Herein, we used lignin to improve strength and impart pH-responsive properties of PVA hydrogel. The lignin reinforced PVA (LRP) hydrogel has a maximum storage modulus of 83.1 kPa, which is much higher than the PVA hydrogel. The LRP hydrogel exhibits great ionic conductivity, mechanical properties, and strain-sensitivity even at -30 °C. The LRP hydrogel is subsequently applied for a moisture-induced electric generator, which delivers a voltage output of 226.6 mV from moisture flow. The eco-friendly, pH responsive, high antifreezing, ionic conductive, strain sensitive, and moist-electric generating hydrogels have potential applications in many fields, including biomedicine, flexible electrodes, pH-responsive switch, strain sensor, and next-generation self-powered device systems.

Abstract:Flexible wearable devices are garnering significant interest, with conductive hydrogels emerging as a particularly notable category. While many of these hydrogels offer impressive conductivity, they often lack the innate ability to adhere autonomously to human skin. The ideal hydrogel should possess both superior adhesion properties and a wide responsive range. This study introduces a novel double-network conductive hydrogel, synthesized from lignosulfonate sodium and ionic liquid using a one-pot method. The gel's mechanical robustness (fracture elongation of ∼3500 % and tensile strength of ∼130 kPa) and exceptional conductivity sensing performance arise from the synergistic effects of electrostatic interactions, dynamic hydrogen bonding, and a three-dimensional network structure. Additionally, the phenolic hydroxyl and sulfonic groups from lignosulfonate sodium imbue the hydrogel with adhesive qualities, allowing it to easily bond with varied material surfaces. This hydrogel excels in human physiological signal detection and wireless monitoring, demonstrating a rapid response time (149 ms) and high sensitivity (a maximum gauge factor of 10.9 for strains between 400 and 600 %). Given these properties, the flexible, self-adhesive, and conductive hydrogel showcases immense promise for future applications in wearable devices and wireless transmission sensing.

Abstract:The use of natural polysaccharides in stretchable hydrogels has attracted more and more attention. However, pure polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel has poor mechanical properties and low sensitivity in strain sensors. Composite hydrogels with high tensile properties (the storage modulus of 6,397.8 Pa and the loss modulus of 3,283.9 Pa) and high electrical conductivity (1.57 S·m −1 ) were prepared using a simple method. The Fe-vermiculite and lignocellulosic nanofibril-based hydrogels were applied as reliable and stable strain sensors that are responsive to environmental stimuli. The prepared hydrogels exhibited excellent ionic conductivity, which satisfied the needs of wrist flexion activity monitoring. The results showed that the PVA/LF 0.4 hydrogel has a natural formulation, high mechanical strength, and electrical conductivity, which has great potential for application in artificial electronics. Schematic illustration of the fabrication of the PVA/LF 0.4 hydrogel, which is then used as conductive hydrogel in electron skin sensors due to excellently tensile (596.7%) and highly conductive (1.57 S‧m −1 ) properties.

Abstract:With the prosperity of flexible energy storage and wearable strain sensing, the ion conductive hydrogel attracts booming attention as electrolyte materials of flexible supercapacitors and flexible strain sensors due to the distinguishing soft and wet feature. Herein, a self-healing hydrogel with mechanical, adhesive and conductive properties has been designed and prepared by introducing polydopamine nanoparticles and water-soluble ionic liquids into hydrophobic association polyacrylamide. The resultant hydrogel samples could be employed as an electrolyte and wearable strain sensor, simultaneously. As hydrogel electrolytes, the resultant supercapacitor possesses a capacitance of 0.37 F g(-1)and capacitance retention of 75.42% after 8000 cyclic charge-discharge tests. Furthermore, the supercapacitor exhibits a capacitance of 0.365 F g(-1)after self-healing, which is 98.65% compared to the original data. As flexible strain sensors, the hydrogels could detect tiny and large-scale human movements in accordance with resistive signals and a gauge factor of 0.841. It could be anticipated that the self-healing hydrogels could be prospective flexible materials for a new generation of flexible sensors and supercapacitors over a wide temperature range.

Abstract:The rapid development of flexible sensors has greatly increased the demand for high-performance hydrogels. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate flexible hydrogel sensors with high stretching, low hysteresis, excellent adhesion, good conductivity, sensing characteristics and bacteriostatic function in a simple way. Herein, a highly conducting double network hydrogel is presented by incorporating lithium chloride (LiCl) into the hydrogel consisting of poly (2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid/acrylamide/acrylic acid) (3A) network and acetylated distarch phosphate (ADSP). The addition of ADSP not only formed hydrogen bonds with 3A to improve the toughness of the hydrogel but also plays the role of "physical cross-linking" in 3A by "anchoring" the polymer molecular chains together. Tuning the composition of the hydrogel allows the attainment of the best functions, such as high stretchability (~770 %), ultralow hysteresis (2.2 %, ε = 100 %), excellent electrical conductivity (2.9 S/m), strain sensitivity (GF = 3.0 at 200–500 % strain) and fast response (96 ms). Based on the above performance, the 3A/ADSP/LiCl hydrogel strain sensor can repeatedly and stably detect and monitor large-scale human movements and subtle sensing signals. In addition, the 3A/ADSP/LiCl hydrogel shows a good biocompatibility and bacteriostatic ability. This work provides an effective strategy for constructing the conductive hydrogels for wearable devices and flexible sensors.
