Abstract:Background: Grounded in self-determination theory, this article deals with a multidimensional measurement of the support of the basic psychological needs and the individual and combined effects on the development of intrinsic motivation and perceived competence in physical education. In addition to the supportive teacher behaviors of autonomy support, competence support and relatedness support, peer relatedness support is examined as an additional factor. Methods: A total of 1,047 students from 72 classes from various German-speaking Swiss cantons took part in the study. The hypothesized four factorial structure was analyzed using multilevel confirmatory factor analyses. Longitudinal measurement invariance testing of intrinsic motivation and perceived competence indicates scalar measurement invariance. Multilevel regression analyses were specified to analysis the longitudinal effects on the development of intrinsic motivation and perceived competence, whereby both the effects of the individual factors as well as the adjusted effects under the inclusion of all predictors were examined. Results: Results of multilevel confirmatory factor analysis indicate that the hypothesized four-factor model (e.g., CFI = 0.97; TLI = 0.96; RMSEA = 0.04; SRMR between = 0.11) is to be favored over alternative models at both levels. Regarding the prediction of the development of intrinsic motivation and perceived competence our study underlines the predictive value of basic psychological need support. The models that examine the effects of the individual predictors indicate that the effects are largely consistent with expectations at both the class and individual level. At class level, however, autonomy support appears to be no significant predictor for the development of intrinsic motivation (p < 0.10), but for perceived competence (p < 0.05). Peer relatedness support is a significant predictor for both outcome variables at both levels of analysis. Regarding the simultaneous integration of all predictors, only the effects of peer relatedness support remain significant for both outcome variables. Discussion: The empirical support of the multidimensionality of the instrument is particularly interesting in the context of the common conceptualization of a unidimensional measurement of autonomy support or a composite factor of psychological need support, whereby only few studies have adequately tested the factorial validity. Although significant effects of supportive teacher behaviors can be demonstrated in the multilevel regression analyses, it is also indicated that the different dimensions lack of incremental predictive validity. Particularly noteworthy is the rarely investigated role of peer relatedness support, which has been shown to be a meaningful predictor, even when supportive teacher behaviors are taken into account.

Abstract:Patient safety has now become a mantra of modern medical practice. Rules, laws, guidelines, evidence and best practices are frequently invoked to improve patient safety. These are not new; they have governed the practice of medicine since antiquity. A set of laws, known as the Code of Hammurabi (circa 1740 B.C.E.) have come down to us from the Babylonians after its namesake, the founder of the Babylonian empire.1 These 282 statues or common laws governed nearly all aspects of social, political, economic and professional life including those pertaining to physicians, surgeons, veterinarians, midwifes and wet nurses. Carefully conscribed details were devoted to specifying the relationship between patients and practitioners, including fees and penalties. Problems of “internal medicine” were dealt with physicians of the priestly class who saw to internal disorders caused by supernatural factors. The surgeon who dealt with physical problems, however, was accountable for both remuneration and liability to earthly courts. If a doctor performed surgery, generally with a bronze knife, and saved the life or eyesight of an upper class citizen, he was to be paid 10 shekels of silver. A similar outcome for a commoner was worth 5 shekels and only 2 shekels for a slave. If the outcome for the upper class citizen was bad (blindness or death), the doctor’s hand was amputated. If a slave died because of the surgery, the doctor had to provide a replacement but had to pay only half the value in silver if the slave was blinded. The Code provided further detail for many procedures including those of veterinarians (“doctor of an ox or ass”). Probably the most famous physician of all time and the founder of clinical medicine is Hippocrates (circa 460-360 B.C.E.) of Greek antiquity, the putative author of the Corpus Hippocraticum.2 Upon graduation from medical school, many modern physicians continue to take the Hippocratic Oath, the model of the ideal physician. Many historians question whether Hippocrates actually wrote this Oath or even the essays attributed to him. Some even question whether Hippocrates was a real person or was a composite created later by Greek and Roman scholars. Even in antiquity there were rules, policies, and regulations on how to behave as a physician. Next to Hippocrates, Galen is probably the next most famous physician in history. His works and texts continued to be studied by medical students and scholars for hundreds of years after his death. When Galen ventured to Rome in 161 A.D. he was met with hostility by the medical establishment. For five years he was able to remain to practice medicine, lecture and conduct public discussions under the protection of the powerful Emperor Marcus Aurelius who named him the “first of physicians and philosophers”.2 Eventually, Galen left to return to Greece complaining that he had been driven out of Rome by the medical establishment who saw him as an interloper. Galen did subsequently return to Rome honoring a request from Marcus Aurelius. He remained for the rest of his life.
Children and Microbial Foodborne Illness

Abstract:Consumption of food contaminated with microbial pathogens (bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses, and their toxins) causes an estimated 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths each year in the United States. People who face relatively higher risks from foodborne illness and associated complications, such as kidney failure, include the very young, the very old, and the immunocompromised, such as those with AIDS and cancer. Children deserve added attention in the study of microbial foodborne illness because the risks of some foodborne illnesses, such as salmonellosis, are relatively higher for children than for other demographic groups. Children’s immune systems are not fully developed, placing them at a relatively higher risk for some foodborne illnesses. A child’s lower weight means that it takes a smaller quantity of pathogens to make a child sick than it would a healthy adult. Also, children have limited control of food safety risks because their meals are usually prepared by others. This article focuses on some of the more common or serious foodborne illnesses, namely illnesses from Campylobacter, Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, E. coli non-O157:H7 STEC, Listeria, and Toxoplasma gondii. Children are usually exposed to these pathogens not only by contaminated food but also by secondary sources of exposure, such as ill family members or ill classmates in a day care center. A pregnant woman who becomes newly infected with Listeria or Toxoplasma gondii can pass the infection to her fetus. USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) estimates that the five foodborne illnesses covered in this article cause $6.9 billion in medical costs, lost productivity, and premature deaths in the United States each year. Using FoodNet data on the proportion of all confirmed and reported illnesses attributed to children for the different pathogens, our preliminary estimate is that about one-third of total costs—$2.3 billion—are the result of illnesses in children under the age of 10. Perceived Autonomy Support from Peers, Parents, and Physical Education Teachers as Predictors of Physical Activity and Health-Related Quality of Life among Adolescents—A One-Year Longitudinal Study

Abstract:The current research adopts the trans-contextual model of motivation (TCM) to examine the role of perceived autonomy support from peers, parents, and physical education (PE) teachers on adolescents’ autonomous motivation, intentions, and physical activity (PA) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) over a one-year period. Adolescents (N = 264) aged between 11 and 15 years (M = 13.24; SD = 0.96) filled in relevant questionnaires during a four-wave longitudinal study. Perceived autonomy support from peers, parents, and PE teachers predicted PA (β ≥ 0.03, p < 0.009) and HRQoL (β ≥ 0.01, p < 0.009) mediated by constructs of TCM over a one-year period. The regressions of PA (β = 0.45, p < 0.001) and HRQoL (β = 0.56, p < 0.001) on themselves over a one-year period were significant. PA significantly predicted the HRQoL measured one year later (β = 0.20, p < 0.001), but not vice versa (β = 0.04, p = 0.52). The unidirectional cross-lagged relationship with the flow from PA to later HRQoL suggests that intervention programs focusing on promoting PA behaviour in adolescents should produce the most pronounced effects if their aim is also to promote HRQoL.
Children's Cortisol and Cell-Free DNA Trajectories in Relation to Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity in School: A Pilot Study

Abstract:The worldwide prevalence of mental disorders in children and adolescents increased constantly. Additionally, the recommended amount of physical activity (PA) is not achieved by this age group. These circumstances are associated with negative impacts on their health status in later life and can lead to public health issues. The exposure to natural green environments (NGE) seems to be beneficial for human health. The compulsory school system offers great opportunities to reach every child with suitable health-related contents and interventions at an early stage. The concept of Education Outside the Classroom (EOtC) uses NGE and sets focus on PA. Therefore, EOtC might be a beneficial educational intervention to promote students health. The association between biological stress markers and sedentary behavior (SB) plus PA is insufficiently evaluated in school settings. This exploratory study aims to evaluate the association between students' cortisol, plus circulating cell-free deoxyribonucleic acid (cfDNA) levels, and their SB, light PA (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). We assessed data from an EOtC program (intervention group [IG], <i>n</i> = 37; control group [CG], <i>n</i> = 11) in three seasons (fall/spring/summer) in outdoor lessons (IG) in a NGE and normal indoor lessons (CG). SB and PA were evaluated by accelerometry, and cortisol and cfDNA levels by saliva samples. Fitted Bayesian hierarchical linear models evaluated the association between cortisol and cfDNA, and compositional SB/LPA/MVPA. A steady decline of cortisol in the IG is associated with relatively high levels of LPA (posterior mean = -0.728; credible interval [CRI 95%]: -1.268; -0.190). SB and MVPA tended to exhibit a similar effect in the CG. A high amount of cfDNA is positively associated with a relatively high amount of SB in the IG (posterior mean, 1.285; CRI: 0.390; 2.191), the same association is likely for LPA and MVPA in both groups. To conclude, LPA seems to support a healthy cortisol decrease in children during outdoor lessons in NGEs. Associations between cfDNA and SB/PA need to be evaluated in further research. This study facilitates the formulation of straightforward and directed hypotheses for further research with a focus on the potential health promotion of EOtC.

Abstract:Abstract Background Undergraduate students enrolled in Health Professions (HP) programs may experience challenges related to motivation and well-being. According to Self-Determination Theory, learning environments that support the three basic psychological needs (needs for autonomy, relatedness, competence) foster students’ autonomous motivation and well-being. Little is known about the associations between basic psychological needs satisfaction, autonomous motivation, and well-being in the HP domain and how they relate to one another in an integrative model. This study assesses the associations of the path “basic psychological needs satisfaction-autonomous motivation-well-being” within HP. Methods We invited first-year students in the field of HP ( N = 850) to fill out an electronic survey, measuring the satisfaction of each basic psychological need, autonomous motivation, and well-being and performed structural equation modelling to examine the paths between these variables. Results In total, 202 students completed the survey (response rate 23.8%). Our model had an acceptable model fit: CFI = 0.924, TLI = 0.916, RMSEA = 0.052, SRMR = 0.057, chi-square test of model fit = 688.678 ( p < .001). Autonomy satisfaction was directly and positively associated with autonomous motivation. The satisfaction of relatedness and competence was directly and positively associated with well-being, and each of them explained approximately the same degree of strength in well-being. Autonomous motivation did not have a direct effect on well-being. Conclusion When students perceived their programs as autonomy supportive, they might develop higher autonomous motivation. Fostering students’ relatedness and competence might enhance students’ well-being. Teachers and curriculum designers can consider developing learning environments that support students’ autonomy, relatedness, and competence.

Abstract:Near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS) technique uses specific wavelengths of light to make a continuous and noninvasive brain monitoring possible. It has great prospects in biomedical monitoring. We have designed and implemented a NIRS prototype system, with which we recorded the concentration changes of oxyhemoglobin(O2Hb) and deoxyhemoglobin(CO2Hb) during in-vivo experiments. The results showed that this prototype based on NIRS technique has a good performance on detecting biomedical signals about hemodynamic changes in brain.

Abstract:Abstract A within-person perspective with several measurement points per individual allows to analyse relations between variables within individuals. Such an approach is still scarce in research from a self-determination theory perspective. Therefore, this study measured basic psychological need satisfaction and intrinsic motivation in real-time and at several lessons with the experience sampling method. In this way, the relationship between need satisfaction and intrinsic motivation was investigated from both a group level and within-person perspective. The sample consisted of 146 students in pre-vocational secondary education, who completed 4128 diary questionnaires. At the group level, positive relationships between satisfaction of the needs and motivation were found. However, individual differences in the strength and direction of these relationships exist. This marks the importance of taking a within-person perspective, and studying both concepts at several lessons and individually. Students’ special educational needs play a role in the strength of the relationship: compared to typically developing students, satisfaction of autonomy is less important, while satisfaction of competence and relatedness with the teacher are more important for the intrinsic motivation of students with special educational needs. However, students’ special educational needs do not explain all differences between individual students. Future research may investigate other student characteristics to explore where individual differences in the importance of the basic psychological needs come from.

Abstract:Teachers play a key role in promoting children and young people’s health and therefore require health training during their initial teacher education (ITE). However, little is known about the impact of such training on teachers’ knowledge, attitudes, confidence, and competence toward promoting health in school, especially long term. We report on Phase 1 of an 18-month project examining the long-term impact of an innovative health education program, based on socio-constructivist learning and critical reflection, during preservice teacher training at one ITE university in England. It also explored barriers and facilitators to promoting health in school. We sent a questionnaire to 1,014 primary and secondary school teachers from three consecutive cohorts: preservice teachers ( N = 334), newly qualified teachers ( N = 334), and early careers teachers ( N = 346). Of these, 164 (16%) responded (32% of preservice teachers, 8% of in-service teachers). This low response rate presents limitations but is in accordance with other research following up early career teachers. The majority of the respondents found the training useful, felt confident and knowledgeable teaching and dealing with health issues, and held positive attitudes about promoting health. They indicated that practical experience, supportive colleagues, and a positive school ethos toward children’s health and well-being were important facilitators to teaching health education. We conclude the training is associated with a positive, long-term effect in the minority who responded, and we argue that the socio-constructivist nature of the health education training is a contributor. However, school environment factors might mitigate or support the impact of training provided during ITE.

Abstract:We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire study in 2016 with 697 student teachers from two Universities. The study used structural equation modelling to analyse the effects of received social support from family and fellow-students as well as perceived self-efficacy in relation to the basic psychological needs in teacher education. To measure the effects of received social support on the satisfaction of basic needs, we developed two scales adapting Mansfield’s qualitative approach on teacher resilience. Perceived self-efficacy turned out to be effected directly by received fellow-students’ support as well as having a mediation effect on higher levels of autonomy and competence, whereas received family support leads only to higher levels of autonomy. Especially received fellow-students’ support is directly connected to higher levels of need satisfaction. Finally, we discuss conclusions for shaping conditions of university-life according to experiencing what is necessary for a higher level of perception and satisfaction of basic psychological needs.

Abstract:Abstract This study investigated the extent to which students’ social-emotional basic psychological need satisfaction (of social-emotional autonomy, social competence, relatedness with students, and relatedness with teachers) is associated with their prosocial motivation and, in turn, behavioral and emotional well-being outcomes. For motivation, autonomous prosocial motivation and controlled prosocial motivation (by way of introjected and external regulation) were examined. Behavioral outcomes comprised prosocial behavior and conduct problems reported by parents/carers, and emotional well-being were positive and negative affect reported by students. With data from 408 secondary school students (and their parents/carers), structural equation modeling showed that perceived autonomy was associated with lower negative affect. Perceived social competence was associated with greater autonomous prosocial motivation, lower external prosocial regulation, greater positive affect, and lower negative affect. Relatedness with teachers was associated with greater autonomous prosocial motivation. In turn, autonomous prosocial motivation was associated with greater prosocial behavior, whereas external prosocial regulation was associated with lower prosocial behavior. Introjected prosocial regulation was only associated with greater negative affect. The results hold implications for promoting social and emotional competence among students.

Abstract:Abstract Background Outdoor education (OE) is a teaching method aiming to promote children’s learning, physical activity (PA) and wellbeing. OE in green areas may further increase positive effects. There is little knowledge on use of OE and its possible effects in a Finnish context. Also, there is a need to evaluate OE from a teacher perspective. The aim of the LärMiljö-study is to: a) survey the use of OE in Swedish-language primary schools and investigate factors related to its use; b) investigate the associations between OE and PA, wellbeing, nature relations and learning among children aged 9-13 years, considering other related factors. Methods The self-determination theory (SDT) is used as theoretical framework. Data is collected via electronic surveys in Swedish-language primary schools, including: a) national surveys among principals and teachers; b) surveys among children and guardians. Children’s PA is measured for a 7-day period via accelerometers and a diary is kept. Teachers keep a class diary on OE provided. Academic tests are performed. Data will be analyzed using quantitative methods. Results This abstract describes the study protocol. The investigation of associations between OE and outcomes among children is mainly done by comparing classes that regularly use OE with classes that do not. Main outcomes are PA, psychosocial wellbeing, academic performance and nature connectedness; secondary outcomes are school motivation, social relations and sleep. Teachers’ experience and use of OE is explored, as is perceived effects of and barriers to OE use. Based on SDT, associations between OE and need satisfaction at work, competence, motivation and work engagement are studied. Conclusions The study represents a unique opportunity to explore OE use in primary schools, its effects among children and teachers, and what the supporting and hindering factors for its use are. The study contributes knowledge that can be used to promote learning and wellbeing in school. Key messages • Outdoor education in primary school may promote schoolchildren’s learning, physical activity, wellbeing and nature relation, but more knowledge is needed, including the perspective of teachers. • The LärMiljö-study will broaden the understanding of the potential effects of OE in primary education and school health promotion, and on factors supporting and hindering its use.

Navigating the school transition: Within- and between-person associations between adolescents' academic self-efficacy, school relatedness, and intrinsic academic motivation

Abstract:Adolescents with higher levels of the basic psychological needs of competence, autonomy, and relatedness report better school functioning compared to their peers with lower levels of these needs. This study extended previous work by examining associations in within-person changes of these psychological needs in the school context, with a special focus on the secondary school transition period. We examined within-person relations between academic self-efficacy, intrinsic academic motivation, and school relatedness. Dutch adolescents (N = 290; Mage = 11.58 years, SD = 0.44 at T1) who were in their last year of primary school were followed for four waves across 2 years. Results from random-intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) showed moderate to strong positive concurrent associations between academic self-efficacy, intrinsic academic motivation, and school relatedness at both the within- and between-person levels. Moreover, within-person increases in school relatedness predicted increases in intrinsic academic motivation 6 months later. Thus, it is vital that researchers, teachers, and educators are aware that social connections and belongingness are important after the school transition for increasing intrinsic academic motivation.
Health Literacy and Health-Related Quality of Life in Beijing Adolescents: A Path Analysis

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Health literacy is a critical driver of achieving an equitable world for every child and adolescent. Although the relationship between health literacy and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been documented, little is known among adolescents. In addition, due to lack of theory-driven empirical research, it remains unknown about the full relationship between health literacy, its antecedents, and HRQoL.OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to apply Manganello's framework to investigate how health literacy was associated with its antecedents and HRQoL in Beijing secondary students.METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 650 students in years 7 to 9 from four secondary schools in Beijing. Based on Manganello's health literacy framework, a self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information on health literacy, its antecedents (i.e., sociodemographics, self-efficacy, social support, school and community environment), and HRQoL. The 8-item Health Literacy Assessment Tool was used to measure health literacy (score range 0-37), and the KIDSCREEN-10 was used to measure HRQoL (score range 10-50). Path analysis was conducted to examine the mediating role of health literacy in the relationship between its antecedents and HRQoL.KEY RESULTS: Overall, the average score of students' health literacy and HRQoL was 26.37 (±5.89) and 37.49 (±5.78), respectively. Health literacy was positively correlated with HRQoL (r = 0.36, p < .01). In the final path model, health literacy was not associated with HRQoL. However, students' social support, school environment, and community environment were associated with HRQoL. Health literacy was affected by self-efficacy, social support, and school environment (all p < .05).CONCLUSIONS: A range of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental factors were associated with health literacy and HRQoL. A holistic approach is needed to improve health literacy and HRQoL through multilevel intervention strategies such as increasing personal self-efficacy, promoting social support, and creating positive environments. The Mental Health Foundation’s school-based Peer Education Project (PEP) has the potential to improve young people’s understanding of their own mental health at a critical developmental stage (early adolescence) using a peer teaching method. This study is a process evaluation to understand: the mechanisms through which PEP might improve young people’s mental health literacy, any challenges with delivery, how the project can be embedded within wider school life and how it can be improved to be of most benefit to the widest number of young people. We will also validate a bespoke mental health literacy questionnaire, and test the feasibility of using it to measure outcomes in preparation for a future study evaluating effectiveness. Methods All schools recruited to the study will receive the PEP intervention. The process evaluation will be informed by realist evaluation approaches to build understanding regarding key mechanisms of change and the impact of different school contexts. The evaluation will test and revise an existing intervention logic model which has been developed in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation. Process evaluation data will be collected from newly recruited schools ( n = 4) as well as current PEP user schools ( n = 2) including training and lesson delivery observations, staff interviews and student focus groups. Baseline and follow-up data will be collected in all newly recruited intervention schools ( n = 4) from all students in Year 7/8 (who receive the PEP) and recruited peer educators in Year 12 via a self-report survey. Discussion This study will enable us to refine the logic model underpinning the peer education project and identify areas of the intervention that can be improved. Findings will also inform the design of a future effectiveness study which will test out the extent to which PEP improves mental health literacy.

Abstract:AIM: To implement and evaluate a health education programme based on the development of social and emotional competence in young children.BACKGROUND: Children's social and emotional skills play a key role in the adoption and maintenance of their lifestyles. Currently, a more comprehensive perspective dealing with these aspects is needed to promote healthy habits in children and develop effective health education programmes.DESIGN: An exploratory randomized controlled trial.METHODS: A convenience sample of 30 children (5 and 6 years old) will be recruited from a public school in Spain, with 15 participants in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. Participants in the experimental group will receive the first unit of the programme, consisting of developing emotional knowledge skills around daily health habits (eating, hygiene, sleep and physical exercise) using different game-based dynamics and an emotional diary, while those in the control group will continue with their usual school routine. Outcome measures include emotional knowledge ability, basic social skills and children's health profile. The perceived impact of the intervention by parents, acceptability (by parents and children) and feasibility of the programme will be also assessed. Data will be collected at baseline, postintervention and at 7-month follow-up.DISCUSSION: This study offers an innovative intervention aimed at improving children's healthy lifestyles from a holistic perspective by addressing social and emotional competence as one of the most influential aspects of children's development. This exploratory trial is an essential step to explore crucial aspects of the full-scale clinical trial.

Promoting Motivation and Well-Being at School: the effect of a teacher training combining a self-determination theory-based intervention and positive psychology interventions

Abstract:Promoting students' well-being and motivation at school is of critical importance to address developmental declines in student motivation and rising prevalence of adolescents’ mental health issues. The present study examined the effects of a multicomponent professional development training course for teachers combining self-determination theory-based intervention and positive psychology intervention on both teachers’ and students’ outcomes. The efficacy of the intervention was assessed using a two-armed parallel cluster randomized controlled trial involving 45 secondary school teachers and their 819 students. Teachers in the intervention condition followed a two-days training on students' motivation and well-being and on ways of adopting facilitating behaviors, while those in the control condition did not benefit from the training. At both pre- and post-intervention, as well as at follow-up (i.e., 2 months post-intervention), teachers and students completed self-report questionnaires measuring work/school satisfaction, motivation for work/school, perceived motivating style, work engagement for teachers and emotional regulation skills for students. Linear mixed models revealed that the intervention is effective both at the teacher level, leading to an improvement in motivating style, motivation, work engagement and job satisfaction, and at the student level, leading to improvements in students’ perceived teacher’s autonomy supportive motivating style, school motivation, and school satisfaction. The present findings indicate that a short training course combining these two approaches can be effective both for promoting teachers’ and students’ motivation and satisfaction, and thus provides a useful cost-effcetive intervention.

Abstract:COVID‐19 and its containment measures have uniquely challenged adolescent well‐being. Following self‐determination theory (SDT), the present research seeks to identify characteristics that relate to well‐being in terms of positive emotion and intrinsic learning motivation under distance schooling conditions and whether SDT's core postulates hold true in this exceptional situation. Feeling competent and autonomous concerning schoolwork, and socially related to others were hypothesised to relate to positive emotion and intrinsic learning motivation. The role of self‐regulated learning (SRL) as a moderator was considered. Self‐reports were collected from 19,967 secondary school students in Austria (Study 1) and Germany (Study 2). In both studies, structural equation modelling revealed that all basic needs were associated with positive emotion, and that competence and autonomy were associated with intrinsic learning motivation. Moderation effects of SRL were identified in Study 1 only: The association of autonomy and both outcomes and the association of competence and intrinsic learning motivation varied with the level of SRL. The results highlight the relevance of basic psychological need satisfaction and SRL in a situation in which adolescents are confronted with a sudden loss of daily routines.

Abstract:Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the prevalence of mental disorders in children and adolescents has increased significantly. Evidence shows that childhood mental disorders can have serious consequences on psychosocial, cognitive, and physical development. Approaches from Positive Education go further than the urgently needed prevention of mental disorders by aiming directly at promoting subjective, psychological, and social wellbeing. The present study describes the implementation of a brief program to promote wellbeing in 15 elementary schools. For this purpose, in a regular university seminar, students of teaching and educational science were instructed to give 11 "happiness lessons" for fourth graders in a team of two and in the presence of the class teacher over the course of 3 months. Quantitative data were collected from children and parents in the treatment group classes and in the parallel classes serving as the waiting control group at four measurement points (pre, post, 1- and 2-month follow-up). We assessed psychological wellbeing, negative emotions and moods, parent support and home life, perception of the school environment, and self-esteem of the children with established instruments with versions for children and their parents and the frequency of positive and negative emotions of the children in self-report only. Additionally, we applied ad hoc items on subjective perception of the project and open questions in the treatment group. Data were analyzed with EffectLiteR using multigroup structural equation models. Results showed a small significant effect for negative emotions with the children's data and a medium effect for psychological wellbeing in the perception of the parents at the 1-month follow-up. Interaction effects suggest that lower baseline levels in parent support and home life and self-esteem would increase the treatment effect for these constructs. The need for more grounded framework in positive education and the inclusion of more qualitative methods as well as suggestions to improve the program in the sense of a whole school approach are discussed.
