Understanding how these trade‐offs vary among populations and across environments is therefore important to more accurately predict species' responses to future climate change. However, the extent to which responses vary across populations remains unknown because few studies investigate intraspecific differences. We performed a full‐factorial split‐brood common garden experiment to test how variation in rearing temperature affects developmental timing and other traits important for survival during diapause in the Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia). Pre‐diapause larvae originating from four regions across a latitudinal cline across Europe were reared at four temperatures (25, 28, 31 and 34°C), and we used a reaction norm approach to test for evidence of genetic differentiation and variation in developmental plasticity across regions. We found clear signs of genetic differentiation in multiple developmental traits, as well as differences in developmental plasticity. Northern larvae entered diapause in the fourth instar when the temperatures were low, whereas southern larvae did so in the fifth instar. As a result, development time is canalized with regards to temperature in northern larvae: due to entering diapause one stage earlier, they develop fast even in the cold, whereas southern larvae always develop slower, especially at low temperatures. As a trade‐off, northern larvae have a lower body mass when reared at cooler temperatures compared to southern larvae, and they show increased plasticity in diapause mass. No clear clinal patterns were found in relative fat content. Our results show that trade‐offs between body size, development time and growth rate can vary within species living across environmental clines, possibly as a consequence of natural selection to local environmental conditions or other genetic constraints. This variation highlights the importance of recognizing the context dependency of relationships between important life‐history traits and their interactions with local environments in predicting species' responses to climate change. Abstract:External environmental cues can influence the development trajectory of organisms and lead to the formation of distinct phenotypes from the same genotype. Phenotypic plasticity is common in Lepidoptera, with temperature frequently playing a key role. The zebra-longwing (Heliconius charithonia) gets its name from its characteristic black wings with yellow stripes. In some populations, yellow scales are sometimes partially replaced by orange ("rusty") scales. The proportion of individuals with rusty scales varies geographically and individuals within the same population can vary drastically for this phenotype. Whether such variation is genetically encoded, or environment-dependent is not known. Here we test the influence of temperature in producing the rusty scales phenotype, as well as on the developmental rates, weight, and mortality in this species. Only female butterflies reared in warm controlled conditions develop rusty scales on the yellow parts of their wings. However, under more extreme (warmer) conditions, both males and females exhibit pronounced rusty scale phenotypes, indicating a sexually dimorphic response to temperature that affects both sexes. This temperature-sensitive trait can be triggered during both larval and pupal stages. Temperature also affects life-history traits, and we observed a trade-off between developmental rate and mortality. Individuals raised in warmer conditions develop more rapidly than those in cooler environments, but this accelerated growth is accompanied by higher mortality across all developmental stages.

Heat resistance throughout ontogeny: body size constrains thermal tolerance

Abstract:Heat tolerance is a trait of paramount ecological importance and may determine a species' ability to cope with ongoing climate change. Although critical thermal limits have consequently received substantial attention in recent years, their potential variation throughout ontogeny remained largely neglected. We investigate whether such neglect may bias conclusions regarding a species' sensitivity to climate change. Using a tropical butterfly, we found that developmental stages clearly differed in heat tolerance. It was highest in pupae followed by larvae, adults and finally eggs and hatchlings. Strikingly, most of the variation found in thermal tolerance was explained by differences in body mass, which may thus impose a severe constraint on adaptive variation in stress tolerance. Furthermore, temperature acclimation was beneficial by increasing heat knock-down time and therefore immediate survival under heat stress, but it affected reproduction negatively. Extreme temperatures strongly reduced survival and subsequent reproductive success even in our highly plastic model organism, exemplifying the potentially dramatic impact of extreme weather events on biodiversity. We argue that predictions regarding a species' fate under changing environmental conditions should consider variation in thermal tolerance throughout ontogeny, variation in body mass and acclimation responses as important predictors of stress tolerance.

Abstract:Developmental plasticity refers to the phenomenon whereby an organism’s phenotype depends on the environmental conditions experienced during development. This plasticity can match phenotype to ecological conditions and help organisms to cope with environmental heterogeneity, including differences between alternating seasons. Experimental studies of developmental plasticity often focus on the impact of individual environmental cues and do not take explicit account of genetic variation. In contrast, natural environments are complex, comprising multiple variables with combined effects that are poorly understood and may vary among genotypes. We investigated the effects of multifactorial environments on the development of the seasonally plastic eyespots of butterflies. Eyespot size is known to depend on developmental temperature and to be involved in alternative seasonal strategies for predator avoidance. In nature, both temperature and food availability undergo seasonal fluctuations. However, our understanding of whether thermal plasticity in eyespot size varies in relation to food availability and across genotypes remains limited. To address this, we investigated the combined effects of temperature (T; two levels: 20°C and 27°C) and food availability (N; two levels: control and limited) during development. We examined their impact on wing and eyespot size in adult males and females from multiple genotypes (G; 28 families). We found evidence of thermal and nutritional plasticity, and of temperature-by-nutrition interactions (significant TxN) on the size of eyespots in both sexes. Food limitation resulted in relatively smaller eyespots and tempered the effects of temperature. Additionally, we found differences among families for thermal plasticity (significant GxT effects), but not for nutritional plasticity (non-significant GxN effects) nor for the combined effects of temperature and food limitation (non-significant GxTxN effects). Our results reveal the context dependence of thermal plasticity, with the slope of thermal reaction norms varying across genotypes and across nutritional environments. We discuss these results in light of the ecological significance of pigmentation and the value of considering thermal plasticity in studies of the biological impact of climate change.

Evolutionary Analyses of Morphological and Physiological Plasticity in Thermally Variable Environments

Abstract:SYNOPSIS. Morphological and physiological plasticity is often thought to represent an adaptive response to variable environments. However, determining whether a given pattern of plasticity is in fact adaptive is analytically challenging, as is evaluating the degree of and limits to adaptive plasticity. Here we describe a general methodological framework for studying the evolution of plastic responses. This framework synthesizes recent analytical advances from both evolutionary ecology and functional biology, and it does so by integrating field experiments, functional and physiological analyses, environmental data, and genetic studies of plasticity. We argue that studies of plasticity in response to the thermal environment may be particularly valuable in understanding the role of environmental variation in the evolution of plasticity: not only can thermally-relevant traits often be mechanistically and physiologically linked to the thermal environment, but also the variability and predictability of the thermal environment itself can be quantified on ecologically relevant time scales. We illustrate this approach by reviewing a case study of seasonal plasticity in the extent of wing melanization in Western White Butterflies (Pontia occidentalis). This review demonstrates that 1) wing melanin plasticity is heritable, 2) plasticity does increase fitness in nature, but the effect varies between seasons and between years, 3) selection on existing variation in the magnitude of plasticity favors increased plasticity in one melanin trait that affects thermoregulation, but 4) the marked unpredictability of short-term (within-season) weather patterns substantially limits the capacity of plasticity to match optimal wing phenotypes to the weather conditions actually experienced. We complement the above case study with a casual review of selected aspects of thermal acclimation responses. The magnitude of thermal acclimation (“flexibility”) is demonstrably modest rather than fully compensatory. The magnitude of genetic variation (crucial to evolutionary responses to selection) in thermal acclimation responses has been investigated in only a few species to date. In conclusion, we suggest that an understanding of selection and evolution of thermal acclimation will be enhanced by experimental examinations of mechanistic links between traits and environments, of the physiological bases and functional consequences of acclimation, of patterns of environmental variability and predictability, of the fitness consequences of acclimation in nature, and of potential genetic constraints.

Simulating effects of climate change under direct and diapause development in a butterfly

Abstract:Abstract Temperature is one of the most important ecological factors affecting species survival and distributions. Therefore, global climate change, involving increases in mean surface temperature and the occurrence of extreme weather events, may pose a substantial challenge to biodiversity. Whereas tropical ectotherms are believed to be very sensitive to climate change, temperate‐zone species may actually benefit from higher temperatures. However, as in temperate zones large parts of the year are unsuitable for growth and reproduction, seasonal time constraints may complicate matters. Against this background we here investigate the impact of simulated climate change, involving increased mean temperatures and heat waves, across developmental pathways of the butterfly L ycaena tityrus ( P oda) ( L epidoptera: L ycaenidae). Increased temperatures speeded up development but decreased pupal mass as expected. However, we found no evidence for detrimental effects of increased temperatures or even simulated heat waves. Furthermore, patterns did not differ between indirectly and directly developing individuals, which are assumed to be more time constrained. Our findings support the notion that not all species will be detrimentally affected by climate change, and suggest that species attributes may be more important than potential time constraints imposed by different developmental pathways.

Abstract:As temperatures are rising globally, the survival of organisms depends on their tolerance of such rising temperatures as well as resistance to indirect effects such as resource shortage under these new conditions. Genetic background and phenotypic plasticity in the form of acclimation are known to affect stress resistance, but much about genetic variation in plasticity is still unknown, especially in insects other than . Here we aim to study the effect of population of origin, developmental temperature, and their interaction on stress tolerance (heat tolerance and starvation resistance). We test the beneficial acclimation hypothesis and how it is influenced by intraspecific differences. For this, we reared Glanville fritillary butterfly larvae originating from Finland and Spain at high and control temperatures, and measured their heat tolerance and starvation resistance. To assess potential costs of acclimation we also measured lifespan under control conditions. Neither adult heat tolerance nor starvation resistance were impacted by thermal conditions during development and thus we found no evidence for the beneficial acclimation hypothesis. Heat tolerance also did not differ between sex or population of origin. In contrast, we found interacting effects of population and sex on adult starvation resistance, with Spanish females outperforming other groups. Spanish females also had a longer lifespan under control conditions. Our study provides no evidence for the beneficial acclimation hypothesis but highlights the importance of population differences in stress tolerance.

Context dependence of transgenerational plasticity: the influence of parental temperature depends on offspring environment and sex

Abstract:Under environmental change, the relationship between phenotype and fitness can change rapidly, leaving populations vulnerable. Plasticity within and between generations could provide the fastest mitigation to environmental change. However, plasticity may depend on interactions among parental environment, offspring environment and offspring sex, and we know little of how these interactions manifest. We examine the importance of parental and offspring thermal environment in the context of a terrestrial ectotherm (the jacky lizard, <i>Amphibolurus muricatus</i>), where the thermal environment depends on complex thermoregulatory behaviours. By manipulating both parental and offspring thermoregulatory (basking) opportunities in a full factorial design, we found that transgenerational plasticity was highly context dependent. Overall, longer parental thermoregulatory opportunities led to increased growth in offspring, providing a clear fitness benefit to daughters but inducing a cost of increased oxidative stress in sons. Daughters, but not sons, received the greatest advantage when their thermal environment matched that of their parents. The offspring thermal environment had little independent effect on offspring phenotype. Together, the results suggest that both directional selection on offspring size (leading to growth being dependent on thermal conditions) and selection for anticipatory parental effects operate, but with a different balance in males and females. More broadly, restrictions in thermoregulatory opportunities under climatic warming will have negative consequences both within and between generations, but the exact nature will depend on the evolved functional form of plasticity.

Abstract:Global warming and invasive species, separately or combined, can impose a large impact on the condition of native species. However, we know relatively little about how these two factors, individually and in combination, shape phenotypes in ectotherms across life stages and how this can differ between populations. We investigated the non-consumptive predator effects (NCEs) imposed by native (perch) and invasive (signal crayfish) predators experienced only during the egg stage or during both the egg and larval stages in combination with warming on adult life history traits of the damselfly Ischnura elegans . To explore microgeographic differentiation, we compared two nearby populations differing in thermal conditions and predator history. In the absence of predator cues, warming positively affected damselfly survival, possibly because the warmer temperature was closer to the optimal temperature. In the presence of predator cues, warming decreased survival, indicating a synergistic effect of these two variables on survival. In one population, predator cues from perch led to increased survival, especially under the current temperature, likely because of predator stress acclimation phenomena. While warming decreased, predator cues increased larval development time with a proportionally stronger effect of signal crayfish cues experienced during the egg stage, indicating a negative carry-over effect from egg to larva. Warming and predator cues increased mass at emergence, with the predator effect driven mainly by exposure to signal crayfish cues during the egg stage, indicating a positive carry-over effect from egg to adult. Notably, warming and predator effects were not consistent across the two studied populations, suggesting a phenotypic signal of adaptation at a microgeographic scale to thermal conditions and predator history. We also observed pronounced shifts during ontogeny from synergistic (egg and early larval stage) toward additive (late larval stage up to emergence) effects between warming and predator stress. The results point out that population- and life-stage-specific responses in life-history traits to NCEs are needed to predict fitness consequences of exposure to native and invasive predators and warming in prey at a microgeographic scale.

Abstract:Abstract Exposure to increased temperatures during early development can lead to phenotypic plasticity in morphology, physiology, and behaviour across a range of ectothermic animals. In addition, maternal effects are known to be important contributors to phenotypic variation in offspring. Whether the two factors interact to shape offspring morphology and behaviour has been barely explored. This is critical since climate change is expected to impact both incubation temperature and maternal resource allocation and stress levels. Using a fully-factorial design, and Bayesian multivariate mixed models, we explored how the manipulation of early thermal environment and yolk-quantity in eggs affected the morphology, performance and antipredator behaviour of two sympatric Australian skink species (Lampropholis delicata and L. guichenoti). We found that juveniles from the hot treatment were larger than those on the cold treatment in L. guichenoti but not L. delicata. Using repeated behavioural measures for individual lizards, we found an interaction between incubation temperature and maternal investment in performance, with running speed being affected in a species-specific way by the treatment. We predicted that changes in performance should influence antipredator responses. In support of this prediction, we found that maternal investment impacted antipredator behaviour, with animals from the yolk-reduced and cold treatment resuming activity faster after a simulated predatory attack in L. delicata. However, the prediction was not supported in L. guichenoti. Our results highlight the importance of exploring the multifaceted role that environments play across generations to understand how different anthropogenic factors will impact wildlife in the future.

Abstract:Developmental plasticity allows organisms to adjust life-history traits to varying environmental conditions, which can have concomitant effects across life stages. Many amphibians are suitable model systems to study plasticity because their larvae can adjust growth and differentiation under fluctuating environments. It is unknown, however, whether somatic and gonadal differentiation are equally affected by environmentally induced plasticity or whether their decoupling alters gonadal maturation postmetamorphosis, which may affect fitness. We tested if developmental acceleration in response to warming and desiccation risk results in shifts in gonadal maturation during metamorphosis and postmetamorphic growth in western spadefoot toads (Pelobates cultripes). We found additive effects of increased temperature and desiccation risk on development and growth at metamorphosis, which largely constrained gonadal maturation in metamorphic and postmetamorphic individuals of both sexes. Furthermore, the conditions experienced by larvae incurred sex-specific carryover effects on the gonadal maturation of juveniles 5 months after metamorphosis. In females, high temperature delayed ovarian maturation regardless of the water level. In males, exposure to high temperature and high water levels slightly delayed the testes' maturation. These results highlight the relevance of larval plasticity in the gonadal maturation of species undergoing metamorphosis, which may have implications for population demographics and the evolution of life histories.

Abstract:To adapt to changes in temperature, animals tend to invest more energy in thermal tolerance to enhance survival, which can have simultaneous costs on plastic traits. Would a decrease in genetic variability, due to global warming, affect the ability of populations with existing metabolic regulatory mechanisms to cope with extreme temperatures? To address this question, we conducted a series of experiments based on the A1B scenario of global warming, assessing within-population genetic variance in (a) morphological traits, (b) metabolic rate allometries, and (c) survival of a winter-diapausing predator ectotherm. Our study focused on the lacewing species Chrysoperla pallida , using both exogamic and endogamic artificial genetic lines. We discovered that both lines use their winter-diapausing phenotype to adapt to summer extreme temperatures caused by extreme heating conditions, but the exogamic line is prone to express phenotypic plasticity in metabolic scaling, with a trade-off between body size and mandible size, i.e. larger individuals tended to develop smaller mandibles to better survive. These findings highlight the significance of substantial phenotypic plasticity and pre-existing metabolic regulatory mechanisms in enabling ectotherms to cope with potential extreme heating occurring in global warming.

Abstract:This report describes the reanalysis of a cross-sectional study of asthma in a large cohort of autoworkers with exposure to metalworking fluids (MWF). There is strong evidence from case reports, clinical studies, and medical surveillance data that exposure to MWF can cause asthma, yet no association was found in the original analysis. The central hypothesis of the reanalysis was that the absence of an association between asthma and MWF exposure was the result of bias caused by the self-selection of asthmatics out of exposed jobs. We addressed the potential job transfer bias by redefining exposure and disease status at the time of asthma onset, rather than at the time of the health survey. This permitted us to treat the cross-sectional study as if it were a historical cohort study, despite the fact that the population was a biased sample of the full cohort. This approach resulted in a significantly elevated incidence rate ratio of 3.2 (95% CI: 1.2-8.3) for synthetic MWF estimated in a Cox proportional hazards model. Although the cross-sectional design makes it impossible to document or control for differential selection out of the workforce, the approach described here provides a strategy for reducing the healthy-worker effect due to job transfer bias in cross-sectional studies.
Phenological Shifts in a Warming World Affect Physiology and Life History in a Damselfly

Abstract:Under climate warming, temperate ectotherms are expected to hatch earlier and grow faster, increase the number of generations per season, i.e., voltinism. Here, we studied, under laboratory conditions, the impact of artificial warming and manipulated hatching dates on life history (voltinism, age and mass at emergence and growth rate) and physiological traits (phenoloxidase (PO) activity at emergence, as an indicator of investment in immune function) and larval survival rate in high-latitude populations of the damselfly Ischnura elegans. Larvae were divided into four groups based on crossing two treatments: early versus late hatching dates and warmer versus control rearing temperature. Damselflies were reared in groups over the course of one (univoltine) or two (semivoltine) growth seasons, depending on the voltinism. Warming temperature did not affect survival rate. However, warming increased the number of univoltine larvae compared to semivoltine larvae. There was no effect of hatching phenology on voltinism. Early hatched larvae reared under warming had elevated PO activity, regardless of their voltinism, indicating increased investment in immune function against pathogens. Increased PO activity was not associated with effects on age or mass at emergence or growth rate. Instead, life history traits were mainly affected by temperature and voltinism. Warming decreased development time and increased growth rate in univoltine females, yet decreased growth rate in univoltine males. This indicates a stronger direct impact of warming and voltinism compared to impacts of hatching phenology on life history traits. The results strengthen the evidence that phenological shifts in a warming world may affect physiology and life history in freshwater insects.

Abstract:An organism’s phenotype has the potential to vary in response to environmental factors, allowing it to adjust to environmental fluctuations. Maternal effects on offspring phenotypes have been recognized as important contributors to this phenotypic plasticity, although the extent and duration of this contribution remain elusive. At more advanced developmental stages, offspring may be able to assess their current environment more accurately than at earlier developmental stages, and therefore their reliance on maternal effects may decline over time. This study investigates how the magnitude and direction of maternal effects change between early and late development using the fruit fly as a model. We employed a split brood design to disentangle the effects of maternal ambient temperature from the effects of offspring ambient temperature at the larval vs. the pupal or early adulthood stage. We subsequently measured offspring phenotypes such as heat shock and cold shock recovery times, survival, and developmental time. Maternal effects on these traits were often substantial during early offspring development, but these effects either diminished in magnitude or even changed direction as development progressed. In conclusion, our study reveals a dynamic shift in the magnitude and direction of maternal effects on offspring phenotypes in , highlighting the interplay between maternal influence and offspring developmental stage in shaping adaptive responses to environmental variation.

Abstract:Phenotypic plasticity in parental care investment allows organisms to promptly respond to rapid environmental changes by potentially benefiting offspring survival and thus parental fitness. To date, a knowledge gap exists on whether plasticity in parental care behaviors can mediate responses to climate change in marine ectotherms. Here, we assessed the plasticity of parental care investment under elevated temperatures in a gonochoric marine annelid with biparental care, Ophryotrocha labronica, and investigated its role in maintaining the reproductive success of this species in a warming ocean. We measured the time individuals spent carrying out parental care activities across three phases of embryonic development, as well as the hatching success of the offspring as a proxy for reproductive success, at control (24℃) and elevated (27℃) temperature conditions. Under elevated temperature, we observed: (a) a significant decrease in total parental care activity, underpinned by a decreased in male and simultaneous parental care activity, in the late stage of embryonic development; and (b) a reduction in hatching success that was however not significantly related to changes in parental care activity levels. These findings, along with the observed unaltered somatic growth of parents and decreased brood size, suggest that potential cost-benefit trade-offs between offspring survival (i.e., immediate fitness) and parents' somatic condition (i.e., longer-term fitness potential) may occur under ongoing ocean warming. Finally, our results suggest that plasticity in parental care behavior is a mechanism able to partially mitigate the negative effects of temperature-dependent impacts.

Responses to Environmental Stressors in Developing Animals: Costs and Benefits of Phenotypic Plasticity

Abstract:The phenotype of an animal results from interaction between genetic information and environmental influences. Embryos and larvae of most animals are freely exposed to the environment, so environmental influences may start affecting development as soon as egg deposition. A response to the environment requires information about the environment, which then triggers modifications in cell and organ function. Even in the earliest developmental stages, receptors may be functional, and a modification of receptor activity may induce physiological responses or modifications in cell proliferation. In embryos, operation of these control loops, which in adults typically are humoral or neuronal loops, is hampered by the somewhat delayed development of the nervous system. In addition, so-called critical windows may severely restrict the time of responsiveness to certain signals or stressors during development. Nevertheless, modifications in heart rate, ventilation, or metabolic activity demonstrate the existence of physiological plasticity in earliest developmental stages. In addition, differences between individuals or populations in cell number and organ size reveal a remarkable plasticity in structural development. Flexibility and plasticity certainly are beneficial because aerobic metabolism, for example, can be adjusted to changes in oxygen availability, ensuring an optimal outcome especially in an environment with variable oxygen tensions, like aquatic environments. The timing of developmental milestones like hatching can be adjusted to optimal environmental conditions in terms of oxygen availability, temperature, or humidity or in response to biotic cues from conspecifics or predators. On the other hand, any response takes time and additional energy and thus may slow down development and growth rate and thus increase the risk of predation in vulnerable larval stages. In species with thermal sex determination, the environmental influence may result in an unbalanced sex ratio of a population, which obviously may be very disadvantageous for the propagation of a population. Organ size and function may be adjusted to the current situation encountered during development and cannot be reversed if environmental conditions return to previous settings. In this case reduced fitness may be the consequence. Our discussion of these options reveals that a certain degree of phenotypic plasticity is essential and required for a species to prosper in a variable environment, and certainly many ecosystems are changing, or predicted to change, in a dramatic fashion. This flexibility derived from phenotypic plasticity does, however, come with a cost and may occasionally result in reduced fitness and disadvantageous phenotypes in the less plastic adult animals.
Plasticity in reproductive output and development in response to thermal variation in ladybird beetle, Menochilus sexmaculatus

Abstract:All organisms are exposed to daily as well as seasonal variation in temperature in nature. However, ectotherms are strongly affected by temperature and its variations. Most laboratory studies on effect of temperature on life history traits employ constant instead of fluctuating temperature regimes, though the latter is more reflective of nature. We conducted investigations on the effect of constant, fluctuating and alternate temperature regimes on reproductive and developmental attributes of a biocontrol agent ladybird, Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). We used three constant, viz. cold, optimum and hot (15°C, 27°C and 35°C); two fluctuating with variation in mean temperature of the day (15°C/27°C, 35°C /27°C; 10/14h) and three alternating (15°C/27°C, 35°C/27°C, 15°C/35°C; 24/24h) temperatures to evaluate their effects on these life attributes. Oviposition and percent egg viability along with offspring development (immature life stages developmental time and developmental rate) and elytral colouration pattern of adults were observed. The best response in terms of oviposition and percent egg viability was recorded at the constant temperature of 27°C followed by the fluctuating regime with a mean temperature of 30.3°C. The fastest development was found at a constant temperature of 35°C, followed by a fluctuating temperature of 35°C/27°C for 10/14h. Among the different temperature cycles, the most uncustomary trend of oviposition and percent egg viability was recorded on an alternate temperature of 15°C/35°C for 24/24h. The constant (27°C) and fluctuating (35°C/27°C for 10/14h) temperatures caused an incremental effect on reproductive output and developmental rate. This study demonstrates that M. sexmaculatus is able to adjust its physiology according to surrounding environmental conditions and acclimatizes well with the fluctuating/alternate temperatures suggesting its wide range of tolerance. The findings of present work would be helpful in augmenting population dynamics of this biocontrol agent to suppress insect pest.

Abstract:In seasonal environments, organisms must synchronize their life cycles to conditions favorable for growth and reproduction. Because season length varies geographically, local adaptation should arise in traits that regulate phenological responses. Geographic photoperiodism clines are well known, but comparable studies on thermal performance are equivocal and often overlook nonlinear responses. Therefore, we examined local adaptation in plastic responses to both photoperiod and temperature along a 752‐km latitudinal cline, by comparing four Swedish populations of the butterfly Pieris napi. Using a common garden design, we estimated (1) photoperiod response curves for diapause induction and (2) thermal performance curves for development and growth rates. We show that differences in photoperiodism follow the expected geographical pattern, where diapause is induced at longer daylengths in northern populations (where growth seasons are short and summer days long). However, population differences in thermal performance curves were small and seemingly idiosyncratic, without clear clinal patterns. Photoperiodic responses appear to evolve more readily than thermal responses, highlighting photoperiodism as a key driver of local life cycle synchronization.

Abstract:Thermal developmental plasticity represents a key organismal adaptation to maintain reproductive capacity in contrasting and fluctuating temperature niches. Although extensively studied, research on thermal plasticity has mainly focused on phenotypic outcomes, such as adult life history, rather than directly measuring plasticity of underlying developmental processes. How thermal plasticity of developmental phenotypes maps into plasticity of resulting final phenotypes, and how such mapping relationships evolve, thus remain poorly understood. Here we address these questions by quantifying thermal plasticity of Caenorhabditis hermaphrodite germline development. We integrate measurements of germline development and fertility at the upper thermal range in isolates of C. briggsae, C. elegans, and C. tropicalis. First, we compare intra- and interspecific variation in thermal germline plasticity with plasticity in reproductive output. Second, we ask whether the developmental errors leading to fertility break-down at upper thermal limits are evolutionarily conserved. We find that temperature variation modulates spermatogenesis, oogenesis and germ cell progenitor pools, yet the thermal sensitivity of these processes varies among isolates and species, consistent with evolutionary variation in upper thermal limits of hermaphrodite fertility. Although defective sperm function is a major contributor to heat-induced fertility break-down, high temperature also significantly perturbs oogenesis, germline integrity, and mitosis-meiosis progression. Remarkably, the occurrence and frequency of specific errors are strongly species- and genotype-dependent, indicative of evolutionary divergence in thermal sensitivity of distinct processes in germline development. Therefore, the Caenorhabditis reproductive system displays complex genotype-by-temperature interactions at the developmental level, which may remain masked when studying thermal plasticity exclusively at the life history level.
