Abstract:The study characterized the temporal and spatial variability in greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes (CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O) between December 2020 and November 2021 and their regulating drivers in the subtropical wetland of the Indian Himalayan foothill. Five distinct habitats (M1—sloppy surface at swamp forest, M2—plain surface at swamp forest, M3—swamp surface with small grasses, M4—marshy land with dense macrophytes, and M5—marshy land with sparse macrophytes) were studied. We conducted in situ measurements of GHG fluxes, microclimate (AT, ST, and SMC (v/v) ), and soil properties (pH, EC, N, P, K, and SOC) in triplicates in all the habitat types. Across the habitats, CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O fluxes ranged from 125 to 536 mg m −2 h −1 , 0.32 to 28.4 mg m −2 h −1 , and 0.16 to 3.14 mg m −2 h −1 , respectively. The habitats (M3 and M5) exhibited higher GHG fluxes than the others. The CH 4 flux followed the summer > autumn > spring > winter hierarchy. However, CO 2 and N 2 O fluxes followed the summer > spring > autumn > winter. CO 2 fluxes were primarily governed by ST and SOC. However, CH 4 and N 2 O fluxes were mainly regulated by ST and SMC (v/v) across the habitats. In the case of N 2 O fluxes, soil P and EC also played a crucial role across the habitats. AT was a universal driver controlling all GHG fluxes across the habitats. The results emphasize that long-term GHG flux monitoring in sub-tropical Himalayan Wetlands has become imperative to accurately predict the near-future GHG fluxes and their changing nature with the ongoing climate change.

Abstract:Methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are known to be major greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. To identify the flux dynamics of these greenhouse gases is, therefore, of great significance. In this paper, we conducted a comparative study on an alpine grassland and alpine wetland at the Bayinbuluk Grassland Eco-system Research Station, Chinese Academy of Sciences. By using opaque, static, manual stainless steel chambers and gas chromatography, we measured the fluxes of CH4, N2O and CO2 from the grassland and wetland through an in situ monitoring study from May 2010 to October 2012. The mean flux rates of CH4, N2O and CO2 for the experimental alpine wetland in the growing season (from May to October) were estimated at 322.4 μg/(m2·h), 16.7 μg/(m2·h) and 76.7 mg/(m2·h), respectively; and the values for the alpine grassland were −88.2 μg/(m2·h), 12.7 μg/(m2·h), 57.3 mg/(m2·h), respectively. The gas fluxes showed large seasonal and annual variations, suggesting weak fluxes in the non-growing season. The relationships between these gas fluxes and environmental factors were analyzed for the two alpine ecosystems. The results showed that air temperature, precipitation, soil temperature and soil moisture can greatly influence the fluxes of CH4, N2O and CO2, but the alpine grassland and alpine wetland showed different feedback mechanisms under the same climate and environmental conditions.

Abstract:Plants regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes in wetland ecosystems, but the mechanisms of plant removal and plant species that contribute to GHG emissions remain unclear. In this study, the fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) were measured using the static chamber method from an island forest dominated by two different species, namely Betula platyphylla (BP) and Larix gmelinii (LG), in a marsh wetland in the Great Xing'an Mountains. Four sub-plots were established in this study: (1) bare soil after removing vegetation under BP (SBP); (2) bare soil after removing vegetation under LG (SLG); (3) soil with vegetation under BP (VSBP); and (4) soil with vegetation under LG (VSLG). Additionally, the contributions of the dark respiration from plant aerial parts under BP (VBP) and LG (VLG) to GHG fluxes were calculated. We found that the substantial spatial variability of CO2 fluxes ranged from −25.32 ± 15.45 to 187.20 ± 74.76 mg m−2 h−1 during the study period. The CO2 fluxes decreased in the order of SBP > VSLG > VSBP > SLG > VLG > VBP, indicating that vegetation species had a great impact on CO2 emissions. Particularly, the absence of vegetation promoted CO2 emission in both BP and LG. Additionally, CO2 fluxes showed dramatically seasonal variations, with high CO2 fluxes in late spring (May) and summer (June, July, and August), but low fluxes in late summer (August) and early autumn (September). Soil temperatures at 0–20 cm depth were better predictors of CO2 fluxes than deeper soil temperatures. N2O fluxes were varied in different treatments with the highest N2O fluxes in SLG and the lowest N2O fluxes in VBP. Meanwhile, no significant correlation was found between N2O fluxes and air or soil temperatures. Temporally, negative N2O fluxes were observed from June to October, indicating that soil N2O fluxes were reduced and emitted as N2, which was the terminal step of the microbial denitrification process. Most of the study sites were CO2 sources during the warm season and CO2 sinks in the cold season. Thus, soil temperature plays an important role in CO2 fluxes. We also found that the CO2 flux was positively related to pH in a 10 cm soil layer and positively related to moisture content (MC) in a 50 cm soil layer in VSBP and VSLG. However, the CO2 flux was negatively related to pH in a 30 cm soil layer in SBP and SLG. Our findings highlight the effects of vegetation removal on GHG fluxes, and aid in the scientific management of wetland plants.
Effects of seasonality, transport pathway, and spatial structure on greenhouse gas fluxes in a restored wetland

Abstract:Wetlands can influence global climate via greenhouse gas (GHG) exchange of carbon dioxide (CO2 ), methane (CH4 ), and nitrous oxide (N2 O). Few studies have quantified the full GHG budget of wetlands due to the high spatial and temporal variability of fluxes. We report annual open-water diffusion and ebullition fluxes of CO2 , CH4 , and N2 O from a restored emergent marsh ecosystem. We combined these data with concurrent eddy-covariance measurements of whole-ecosystem CO2 and CH4 exchange to estimate GHG fluxes and associated radiative forcing effects for the whole wetland, and separately for open-water and vegetated cover types. Annual open-water CO2 , CH4 , and N2 O emissions were 915 ± 95 g C-CO2 m-2 yr-1 , 2.9 ± 0.5 g C-CH4 m-2 yr-1 , and 62 ± 17 mg N-N2 O m-2 yr-1 , respectively. Diffusion dominated open-water GHG transport, accounting for >99% of CO2 and N2 O emissions, and ~71% of CH4 emissions. Seasonality was minor for CO2 emissions, whereas CH4 and N2 O fluxes displayed strong and asynchronous seasonal dynamics. Notably, the overall radiative forcing of open-water fluxes (3.5 ± 0.3 kg CO2 -eq m-2 yr-1 ) exceeded that of vegetated zones (1.4 ± 0.4 kg CO2 -eq m-2 yr-1 ) due to high ecosystem respiration. After scaling results to the entire wetland using object-based cover classification of remote sensing imagery, net uptake of CO2 (-1.4 ± 0.6 kt CO2 -eq yr-1 ) did not offset CH4 emission (3.7 ± 0.03 kt CO2 -eq yr-1 ), producing an overall positive radiative forcing effect of 2.4 ± 0.3 kt CO2 -eq yr-1 . These results demonstrate clear effects of seasonality, spatial structure, and transport pathway on the magnitude and composition of wetland GHG emissions, and the efficacy of multiscale flux measurement to overcome challenges of wetland heterogeneity.

Abstract:Whether natural wetlands serve as the source or sink of greenhouse gases (GHGs) remains uncertain. Wetlands in China are diverse in type and abundant in quantity and differ greatly in spatial distribution, environmental conditions, and GHG fluxes. However, few studies focused on the differences in GHG emissions from different types of natural wetlands. Here, we adopted strict data collection criteria to create comprehensive and detailed datasets of fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) from the marsh, coastal, lake, and river wetlands in China, and relevant environmental variables. Our study synthesized 265 field observations on GHGs that lasted at least one year (covering both the growing season and non-growing season) from 109 studies, among which CO2 measurements using the opaque chamber method were not included for eliminating the influence of absence of photosynthesis on net CO2 accounting. We found that CH4 contributed the largest warming effect among the three types of GHGs, and coastal and river wetlands respectively acted as the mitigators and motivators of global warming among the four types of wetlands. Correlation and regression analyses suggested that geographic location, soil moisture and organic carbon, and contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved oxygen jointly drove wetland GHG fluxes. The comprehensive global warming potential of Chinese natural wetlands was estimated as 427 Tg CO2-equivalents year−1, which might result from increased wetland drainage, reclamation, and external nutrient inputs. This study highlights the incorporation of the full year-round GHG monitoring data without using opaque chambers to measure CO2 flux when extrapolating net GHG emissions and gives implications for natural wetland management and global warming mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Niaodao, a lakeside wetland, was used as the focus of this study to investigate the effect of rainfall changes on the greenhouse gas fluxes of wetland ecosystems. Wetland plots with different moisture characteristics (+25%, −25%, +75%, and −75% rainfall treatments and the control treatment (CK)) were constructed to observe in situ field greenhouse gas emissions at 11:00 and 15:00 (when the daily mean values were similar) in the growing season from May to August 2020 by static chamber–gas chromatography and to investigate the responses of wetland greenhouse gases to different rainfall treatments. The results showed the following: (1) The carbon dioxide (CO2) flux ranged from −49.409 to 374.548 mg·m−2·h−1. The mean CO2 emission flux was greater at 11:00 than at 15:00, and the +25% and +75% treatments exhibited substantially higher CO2 emissions. In addition, the CO2 flux showed a small peak at the beginning of the growing season when the temperature first started to rise. All treatments showed the effect of the CO2 source, and their effects were significantly different. (2) The methane (CH4) flux ranged from −213.839 to 330.976 μg·m−2·h−1 and exhibited an absorption state at 11:00 and an emission state at 15:00. The CH4 emission flux in August (the peak growing season) differed greatly between treatments and was significantly negatively correlated with the rainfall amount (p < 0.05). (3) The nitrous oxide (N2O) flux ranged from −10.457 to 16.878 μg·m−2·h−1 and exhibited a weak source effect throughout the growing season, but it was not significantly correlated with soil moisture; it was, however, negatively correlated with soil temperature. (4) The different treatments resulted in significant differences in soil physical and chemical properties (electrical conductivity, pH, total soil carbon, and total soil nitrogen). The rainfall enhancement treatments significantly improved soil physical and chemical properties.

Abstract:Wetlands are important modulators of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHGs) concentrations. However, little is known about the magnitudes and spatiotemporal patterns of GHGs fluxes in wetlands on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), the world’s largest and highest plateau. In this study, we measured soil temperature and the fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) in an alpine wetland on the QTP from April 2017 to April 2019 by the static chamber method, and from January 2017 to December 2017 by the eddy covariance (EC) method. The CO 2 and CH 4 emission measurements from both methods showed different relationships to soil temperature at different timescales (annual and seasonal). Based on such relationship patterns and soil temperature data (1960–2017), we extrapolated the CO 2 and CH 4 emissions of study site for the past 57 years: the mean CO 2 emission rate was 91.38 mg C m –2 h –1 on different measurement methods and timescales, with the range of the mean emission rate from 35.10 to 146.25 mg C m –2 h –1 , while the mean CH 4 emission rate was 2.75 mg C m –2 h –1 , with the ranges of the mean emission rate from 1.41 to 3.85 mg C m –2 h –1 . The estimated regional CO 2 and CH 4 emissions from permanent wetlands on the QTP were 94.29 and 2.37 Tg C year –1 , respectively. These results indicate that uncertainties caused by measuring method and timescale should be fully considered when extrapolating wetland GHGs fluxes from local sites to the regional level. Moreover, the results of global warming potential showed that CO 2 dominates the GHG balance of wetlands on the QTP.

Assessing the role of deltaic flood plain wetlands on regulating methane and carbon balance

Abstract:Present study deals with the role of wetland for regulating greenhouse gases (GHG) particularly methane (CH4) emission and carbon (C) sequestration in mature Ganges deltaic environment. The annual total amount of emission and sequestration in wetlands of varying types was estimated along with the seasonal variation. Result showed that the streams were the highest emitter of CH4 followed by ox-bow lakes in all the seasons whereas the bheries (embanked pisciculture arresting tidal water) consistently exhibited the lowest average emission. The average sequestration of C was the highest in ox-bow lakes followed by marshes and mudflats. The average emission in monsoon season was 43% and 78% higher than the average emission of pre and post-monsoon seasons respectively. The yearly total emission was 8.01 × 103 ton and yearly total sequestration was estimated 908.98 × 103 ton. From the perspective of GHG regulation, the wetlands were found to yearly uptake four times higher carbon dioxide (CO2) than the CO2 equivalent (CO2e) of emitted CH4. After offsetting the fixation cost of emitted CH4, the yearly surplus sequestrated C in the wetlands of the entire region was worthy of 68.46 million US dollar (USD). So, wetland plays positive role for reducing greenhouse gas effect and associated temperature rise which is considered to be serious issue. Such result has made a good agreement on the debated issue of wetland CH4 emission and C sequestration and will encourage restoring wetland for even mediating GHG issue.

Abstract:Wetland systems play important roles in the issues of global warming. That is because wetlands can not only intake carbon and nitrogen in the plants and sediments, but could also release carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) to the atmosphere during the microbial decomposition processes in the water. In the past, greenhouse gases (GHGs) were measured mostly by using the manual sampling technique; however, it is difficult to measure the diurnal variation of greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, a floating chamber used to collect GHGs, which were then in-site monitored with a continuous GHG analyzer, through a Teflon tube connected to the top of the chamber was designed. The data for seasonal and diurnal variations of GHGs, emission fluxes of GHGs, and equivalent carbon dioxide emissions (CO2-e) were measured to explore the extent of a saline mangrove constructed wetland contributing to global warming. In addition, the correlation and regression analysis among greenhouse gas emissions, water quality, and other environmental factors were analyzed statistically. The results of continuous monitoring of GHGs showed that the concentrations of CO2 emitted from a saline mangrove constructed wetland ranged from 383.5 ± 25.9 to 476.8 ± 24.2 ppm. The diurnal variation of GHG concentrations was significant, which showed that the GHG concentrations in the daytime were generally lower than those at nighttime. The emissions of methane (CH4) from the wetland were monitored in a range between 3.7 ± 1.4 and 28.6 ± 7.6 ppm, while the concentrations of nitrous oxide (N2O) emitted from the wetlands ranged from 3.1 ± 2.6 to 0.9 ± 0.6 ppm. Hence, the diurnal variations of CH4 and N2O concentrations showed higher values in the daytime than those at nighttime. The correlation analytical results among GHG emissions, water quality, and other environmental factors presented that the emission fluxes of CO2 and BOD5 were positively correlated, but a negative correlation was shown for global solar radiation (GSR). Moreover, the concentrations of CH4 and N2O had moderately positive correlation with both air temperature and water temperature.

Abstract:Vegetation loss and plant diversity decline in wetlands affect carbon and nitrogen cycling and consequently influence gas fluxes. Although extensive grazing by livestock and climate change have caused significant physical degradation of wetlands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), and created a clear drainage gradient, the impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with this change has rarely been reported. A 3-year study (2013–2015) was conducted to examine the effect of vegetation change and seasonality on ecosystem respiration, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes in four classes of wetlands with distinct magnitudes of vegetation degradation: healthy vegetation (HV), slightly degraded (SD), moderately degraded, and heavily degraded (HD). We used the dark static chamber-chromatography method to measure the gas fluxes. Highly degraded wetlands were larger C and GHG sources than HV, despite lower methane emissions, due to the loss of gross primary production. SD and HD exhibited the highest cumulative mean annual ecosystem respiration and N2O emissions, respectively. Ecosystem respiration and CH4 fluxes were much higher during the growing seasons than in the non-growing seasons. Ecosystem respiration and N2O fluxes were positively correlated with soil and air temperatures. This points at a potential effect of global warming on GHG emissions from the QTP wetlands. Top soil (0–20 cm) moisture content significantly correlated positively with CH4 fluxes. Vegetation loss led to a reduced C uptake and increased global warming potential. Therefore, we recommend soil conservation measures and reduced livestock grazing in the wetlands in order to conserve their role as carbon sinks.

Influence of land-use change and season on soil greenhouse gas emissions from a tropical wetland: A stepwise explorative assessment

Abstract:Tropical wetlands are important climate regulators. However, their climate regulating function is at risk by land-use conversion for agricultural purposes. In sub-Saharan Africa, studies investigating the effect of land-use change in wetlands and associated soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain limited. Moreover, the influence of season in GHG emissions with land-use change has hardly been studied. Therefore, we investigated methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from a Kenyan wetland and adjacent areas converted to farmland during the dry and rainy seasons. Moreover, we assessed which soil parameters drive the variations in GHG emissions. The GHG samples were collected by the static chamber method and analyzed by gas chromatography. For data analysis, we employed an explorative-statistical approach to explain the emission rates' variation and determine which parameters influence the GHG emissions, both as main and interaction effects. The results showed that regardless of the season, there were CH4 emissions (>0.50 mg m−2 h−1) from the wetland when soil organic carbon content was high and uptake (<0.001 mg m−2 h−1) when both soil organic carbon content and soil moisture were low. In the farmland, there was CH4 uptake when soil nitrate‑nitrogen content was high. CO2 emissions did not vary significantly between the land-use types. Instead, emission rates were primarily governed by season. The highest emissions (>175 mg m−2 h−1) during the dry season were attributed to high soil organic carbon content. During the rainy season, emissions hardly exceeded 175 mg m−2 h−1. Regarding N2O, we detected the highest emissions (>5 μg m−2 h−1) from the farmland during the dry season. Overall, this study shows that wetland conversion to farmland encourages CH4 uptake regardless of the season and increases N2O emissions during the dry season. Based on the respective GHG global warming potential, these patterns may pose an increased environmental threat.

Patterns and environmental drivers of greenhouse gas fluxes in the coastal wetlands of China: A systematic review and synthesis

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play an increasingly important role in regulating greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes and thus affecting climate change. However, the overall magnitude, trend, and environmental drivers of GHG fluxes in these wetlands of China remain uncertain. Herein, we synthesized data from 70 publications involving 187 field observations to identify patterns and drivers of GHG fluxes across coastal wetlands in China. Average methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions (ecosystem respiration) across coastal wetlands were estimated as 2.20±0.31 mg·m-2·h-1, 16.44±2.96 μg·m-2·h-1, and 388.76±42.28 mg·m-2·h-1, respectively. GHG emissions varied with tidal inundation, where CH4 and CO2 emissions during tidal inundation were lower than during ebbing. CH4 and CO2 emissions from wetlands decreased linearly with increasing latitude, while N2O did not. CH4 fluxes were positively related to air temperature and aboveground biomass, and CO2 emissions were positively related to soil organic carbon. N2O fluxes were lower with increasing soil pH, and CH4 and CO2 emissions were greater with increasing soil moisture. Based on the results of sustained-flux global warming potential and sustained-flux global cooling potential models, our paper indicate that the fluxes of CH4 and N2O in coastal wetlands have a positive feedback to global warming, which is mainly driven by the CH4 emission. Our synthesis improved understanding of the roles of coastal wetlands in the ecosystem C cycle under global change. We suggest that long-term field observations of GHG fluxes across a wider range of spatiotemporal scales are urgently required to improve the prediction accuracy in GHG fluxes and the assessment of net GHG balance and its contribution to the GWP of coastal wetlands.

Herein, 1865 papers related to wetlands GHG emissions published from January 2000 to December 2023 were selected, and CiteSpace and VOSviewer were used for bibliometric analysis to visually analyze the publications distribution, research authors, organizations and countries, core journal and keywords, and discussed the research progress, trends and hotspots in the fields. Over the past 24 years, the research has gone through three phases: the "embryonic" stage (2000-2006), the accumulation stage (2007-2014), and the acceleration stage (2015-2023). China has played a pivotal role in this domain, publishing the most papers and working closely with the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Australia. In addition, this study synthesized 311 field observations from 123 publications to analyze the variability in GHG emissions and their driving factors in four different types of natural wetlands. The results suggested that the average carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) fluxes in different wetlands were significantly different. River wetlands exhibited the highest GHG fluxes, while marsh wetlands demonstrated greater global warming potential (GWP). The average CO 2 , CH 4 and N 2 O fluxes were 60.41 mg·m -2 ·h -1 , 2.52 mg·m -2 ·h -1 and 0.05 mg·m -2 ·h -1 , respectively. The GWP of Chinese natural wetlands was estimated as 648.72 Tg·CO 2 -eq·yr -1 , and CH 4 contributed the largest warming effect, accounting for 57.43%. Correlation analysis showed that geographical location, climate factors, and soil conditions collectively regulated GHG emissions from wetlands. The findings provide a new perspective on sustainable wetland management and reducing GHG emissions.

Abstract:In this study, we aimed at determining greenhouse gas (GHG) (CO2, CH4, and N2O) fluxes exchange between the soil collected from sites dominated by different vegetation types (Calamagrostis epigeios, Phragmites australis, and Carex schnimdtii) in nitrogenous loaded riparian wetland and the atmosphere. The intact soil columns collected from the wetland were incubated in laboratory and continuously treated with \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \)-enriched water simulating downward surface water percolating through the soil to become groundwater in a natural system. This study revealed that the soil collected from the site dominated by C. epigeios was net CO2 and N2O sources, whereas the soil from P. australis and C. schnimdtii were net sinks of CO2 and N2O, respectively. The soil from the site dominated by C. schnimdtii had the highest climate impact, as it had the highest global warming potential (GWP) compared with the other sites. Our study indicates that total organic carbon and \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) concentration in the soil water has great influence on GHG fluxes. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and N2O fluxes were accelerated by the availability of higher \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) concentration in soil water. On the other hand, higher \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) concentration in soil water favors CH4 oxidation, hence the low CH4 production. Temporally, CO2 fluxes were relatively higher in the first 15 days and reduced gradually likely due to a decline in organic carbon. The finding of this study implies that higher \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) concentration in wetland soil, caused by human activities, could increase N2O and CO2 emissions from the soil. This therefore stresses the importance of controls of \( {\mathrm{NO}}_3^{-} \) leaching in the mitigation of anthropogenic N2O and CO2 emissions.

Abstract:Currently, there is a lack of knowledge about GHG emissions, specifically N2O and CH4, in subtropical coastal freshwater wetland and mangroves in the southern hemisphere. In this study, we quantified the gas fluxes and substrate availability in a subtropical coastal wetland off the coast of southeast Queensland, Australia over a complete wet-dry seasonal cycle. Sites were selected along a salinity gradient ranging from marine (34 psu) in a mangrove forest to freshwater (0.05 psu) wetland, encompassing the range of tidal influence. Fluxes were quantified for CH4 (range −0.4–483 mg C–CH4 h−1 m−2) and N2O (−5.5–126.4 μg N–N2O h−1 m−2), with the system acting as an overall source for CH4 and N2O (mean N2O and CH4 fluxes: 52.8 μg N–N2O h−1 m−2 and 48.7 mg C–CH4 h−1 m−2, respectively). Significantly higher N2O fluxes were measured during the summer months (summer mean 64.2 ± 22.2 μg N–N2O h−1 m−2; winter mean 33.1 ± 24.4 µg N–N2O h–1 m−2) but not CH4 fluxes (summer mean 30.2 ± 81.1 mg C–CH4 h−1 m−2; winter mean 37.4 ± 79.6 mg C–CH4 h−1 m−2). The changes with season are primarily driven by temperature and precipitation controls on the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentration. A significant spatial pattern was observed based on location within the study site, with highest fluxes observed in the freshwater tidal wetland and decreasing through the mangrove forest. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) varied throughout the landscape and was correlated with higher CH4 fluxes, but this was a nonlinear trend. DIN availability was dominated by N–NH4 and correlated to changes in N2O fluxes throughout the landscape. Overall, we did not observe linear relationships between CH4 and N2O fluxes and salinity, oxygen or substrate availability along the fresh-marine continuum, suggesting that this ecosystem is a mosaic of processes and responses to environmental changes.

Abstract:Coastal saline wetlands are recognized as prominent sources of greenhouse gas emissions. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the effect of coastal wetlands in mitigating global warming caused by greenhouse gases in China. This study aims to investigate how vegetation and soil parameters affect greenhouse gas emissions in a coastal saline wetland. Fluxes of CO2, CH4, and N2O were measured simultaneously in situ using the closed static chamber technique in four different coastal tidal flats, namely, mud flat, Spartina alterniflora flat, Suaeda glauca flat, and grass flat. The measurements were obtained from September 2012 to August 2013 in the Yancheng coastal wetland, southeast China. The average fluxes across all seasons and flats varied from 10.7 to 2297.6 mg CO2 m(-2) h(-1) (ecosystem respiration), from -0.368 to 4.959 mg CH4 m(-2) h(-1), and from 1.5 to 65.7 mu g N2O m(-2) h(-1). Higher CO2 and CH4 fluxes were observed during the summer and autumn seasons. However, the seasonal change of the N2O fluxes was complicated. For the S. alterniflora and grass flats, the highest emissions were observed during summer. For the mud and S. glauca flats, the emissions peaked during winter. The spatial variations of the three greenhouse gas fluxes in the coastal saline wetland primarily depended on vegetation type. The greenhouse gas fluxes from the three tidal flats with vegetation covers (S, alterniflora, S. glauca, and grass flats) were higher than those from the mud flat. Higher CO2 emissions were observed in the S. alterniflora flat than those in the other flats because of the higher carbon sequestration rate, together with higher net primary production and aboveground biomass. However, CH4 and N2O emissions were highest in the grass flat, followed by the S. alterniflora flat. The effects of tidal flats on the CH4 and N2O emissions differed according to the season. The S. alterniflora invasion increased the CO2 emission while slightly lowering the CH4 fluxes, compared with that of native plant communities dominated by Phragmites. Results also suggested that S. alterniflora had the highest global warming potential among the tidal flats in the coastal saline wetland. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The application of reservoirs in the upper reaches of rivers will change the hydrological rhythm of river-connected wetlands in the lower reaches, causing changes in the distribution of wetland vegetation. The differences of carbon and nitrogen sequestration and emission potential in different vegetations may lead to the dynamics of greenhouse gas emissions from wetlands during hydrological periods. For a wetland connected to the Yangzi River, China, the dynamic changes of vegetation and water areas were identified by remote sensing, and the water level, the emission fluxes of greenhouse gases and the functional bacteria of carbon and nitrogen in soil were measured in-situ. Compared with drought period, the area of phragmites zone in flooding period increased by 28.2%, while the areas of carex and phalaris zones decreased by 42.9%. The carbon and nitrogen accumulation in the soil of phragmites zone is the highest, while the cumulative amount of phalaris is the lowest. The emission fluxes of CH 4 and N 2 O in mud/water and various vegetations were positively correlated with water level and reached the maximum during flooding period. Although the global warming potential of mud/water was highest than that of vegetations, carex zone had the highest warming potential among vegetation zones. CH 4 contributes 8–37 times as much as N 2 O to global warming potential in the wetland. The increase of flooding time promoted the emissions of CH 4 and N 2 O in the wetland. The anaerobic condition caused by flooding stimulated the activities of denitrifying and methanogenic bacteria, thus increasing the emission of greenhouse gases. The sequestrations and emissions of carbon and nitrogen regulated by a reservoir in the upstream suggest that the operation of water conservancies should be considered to alleviate the greenhouse gas emission from river-connected wetland.

Abstract:Abstract. Gradual riparian wetland drying is increasingly sensitive to global warming and contributes to climate change. Riparian wetlands play a significant role in regulating carbon and nitrogen cycles. In this study, we analyzed the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) from riparian wetlands in the Xilin River basin to understand the role of these ecosystems in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Moreover, the impact of the catchment hydrology and soil property variations on GHG emissions over time and space was evaluated. Our results demonstrate that riparian wetlands emit larger amounts of CO2 (335–2790 mgm-2h-1 in the wet season and 72–387 mgm-2h-1 in the dry season) than CH4 and N2O to the atmosphere due to high plant and soil respiration. The results also reveal clear seasonal variations and spatial patterns along the transects in the longitudinal direction. N2O emissions showed a spatiotemporal pattern similar to that of CO2 emissions. Near-stream sites were the only sources of CH4 emissions, while the other sites served as sinks for these emissions. Soil moisture content and soil temperature were the essential factors controlling GHG emissions, and abundant aboveground biomass promoted the CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions. Moreover, compared to different types of grasslands, riparian wetlands were the potential hotspots of GHG emissions in the Inner Mongolian region. Degradation of downstream wetlands has reduced the soil carbon pool by approximately 60 %, decreased CO2 emissions by approximately 35 %, and converted the wetland from a CH4 and N2O source to a sink. Our study showed that anthropogenic activities have extensively changed the hydrological characteristics of the riparian wetlands and might accelerate carbon loss, which could further affect GHG emissions.

Abstract:Hydrologic margins of wetlands are narrow, transient zones between inundated and dry areas. As water levels fluctuate, the dynamic hydrology at margins may impact wetland greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes that are sensitive to soil saturation. The Prairie Pothole Region of North America consists of millions of seasonally-ponded wetlands that are ideal for studying hydrologic transition states. Using a long-term GHG database with biweekly flux measurements from 88 seasonal wetlands, we categorized each sample event into wet to wet (W→W), dry to wet (D→W), dry to dry (D→D), or wet to dry (W→D) hydrologic states based on the presence or absence of ponded water from the previous and current event. Fluxes of methane were 5-times lower in the D→W compared to W→W states, indicating a lag ‘ramp-up’ period following ponding. Nitrous oxide fluxes were highest in the W→D state and accounted for 20% of total emissions despite accounting for only 5.2% of wetland surface area during the growing season. Fluxes of carbon dioxide were unaffected by transitions, indicating a rapid acclimation to current conditions by respiring organisms. Results of this study highlight how seasonal drying and re-wetting impact GHGs and demonstrate the importance of hydrologic transitions on total wetland GHG balance.

Abstract:Wetlands are critically important to global climate change because of their role in modulating the release of the atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHGs) carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4). Temperature plays a crucial role in wetland GHG emissions, while the general pattern for seasonal temperature dependencies of wetland CO2 and CH4 emissions is poorly understood. Here we show opposite seasonal temperature dependencies of CO2 and CH4 emissions by using 36,663 daily observations of simultaneous measurements of ecosystem‐scale CO2 and CH4 emissions in 42 widely distributed wetlands from the FLUXNET‐CH4 database. Specifically, the temperature dependence of CO2 emissions decreased with increasing monthly mean temperature, but the opposite was true for that of CH4 emissions. Neglecting seasonal temperature dependencies may overestimate wetland CO2 and CH4 emissions compared to the use of a year‐based static and consistent temperature dependence parameter when only considering temperature effects. Our findings highlight the importance of incorporating the remarkable seasonality in temperature dependence into process‐based biogeochemical models to predict feedbacks of wetland GHG emissions to climate warming.
