Abstract:Abstract The next generations of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workers are being trained in college and university classrooms by a workforce of instructors who learn pedagogical practice largely on the job. While inclusive instructional practices and their impacts are increasingly well-studied, this training is difficult to instill within the professional development that most STEM professors receive before teaching their students. The Science Teaching Experience Program for Upcoming PhDs (STEP-UP) at the University of Washington was built to prepare future professors for inclusive excellence by guiding them through the literature in education research and providing them a space to practice active and inclusive teaching techniques. This study of STEP-UP uses a design-based approach to understand graduate trainee and undergraduate perceptions of the most salient aspects and outcomes of the program. Our study found that trainees used opportunities to practice inclusive teaching methods with a cohort of their peers, and crucially that these methods were evident in trainee-taught courses through multiple lines of evidence. STEP-UP-trained instructors used inclusive teaching strategies that helped students to feel socioemotionally supported. This study offers a model program that fosters inclusion and equity in undergraduate STEM classrooms through improving teaching professional development for graduate students.

Abstract:Course-based undergraduate research is promoted as an equitable strategy for providing the benefits of research experiences to a larger, more diverse population of students pursuing science degrees. Here, we report the impacts of course-based research on the self-efficacy and future goals of students enrolled in introductory biology courses at a minority-serving comprehensive teaching university. These courses are part of a department-wide effort to redesign and coordinate 10 laboratory courses to include embedded research projects addressing a common scientific problem. Pre-and postsurveys evaluating self-efficacy of laboratory skills and future academic and career goals were administered to students enrolled in two iterations of two redesigned introductory biology courses. Findings include increases in self-efficacy related to experimental design, communication/collaboration, and scientific literacy in the first course, but only scientific literacy in the second course. Very few disparities in self-efficacy were found postcourse for students of varying demographics, despite several precourse differences, while future academic and career plans remained largely unaltered. This study, representing the first thorough analysis of our department’s redesigned courses, is informing curricular improvements to the introductory labs and providing data for a longitudinal study of the impact of the entire program.

Abstract:Research Findings: High quality STEM professional learning is necessary for supporting early educators to implement early childhood STEM education in ways that promote young children's development. This is particularly important for educators serving young children of color or from under-resourced backgrounds who have few STEM early learning opportunities. The STEM Lab intervention was designed to address multiple barriers early educators face regarding STEM education by providing designated time, space, materials and professional learning for teachers targeting STEM education. This study engaged 47 preschool educators serving primarily African American and Latinx children from under-resourced families in the STEM Lab intervention. Observational data identified higher quality teacher-child interactions in the STEM Lab lessons compared to regular classroom experiences, particularly for instructional quality. While STEM opportunities were rare in the regular classroom, multiple observations across the school year in the STEM Labs found that teachers used a range of quality science and engineering practices in the STEM Lab and improved in their skills across the school year. Practice or Policy: The STEM Lab intervention demonstrates promise for engaging educators and young children in quality science learning opportunities. Administrative policy is necessary to promote STEM Lab experiences.

Preparing future STEM faculty through flexible teaching professional development

Abstract:We have prepared thousands of future STEM faculty around the world to adopt evidence-based instructional practices through their participation in two massive open online courses (MOOCs) and facilitated in-person learning communities. Our novel combination of asynchronous online and coordinated, structured face-to-face learning community experiences provides flexible options for STEM graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to pursue teaching professional development. A total of 14,977 participants enrolled in seven offerings of the introductory course held 2014-2018, with 1,725 participants (11.5% of enrolled) completing the course. Our results of high levels of engagement and learning suggest that leveraging the affordances of educational technologies and the geographically clustered nature of this learner demographic in combination with online flexible learning could be a sustainable model for large scale professional development in higher education. The preparation of future STEM faculty makes an important difference in establishing high-quality instruction that meets the diverse needs of all undergraduate students, and the initiative described here can serve as a model for increasing access to such preparation.
Assessing Gains in Science Teaching Self-Efficacy After Completing an Inquiry-Based Earth Science Course

Abstract:Preservice elementary teachers are often required to take an Earth Science content course as part of their teacher education program but typically enter the course with little knowledge of key Earth Science concepts and are uncertain in their ability to teach science. This study investigated whether completing an inquiry-based Earth Science course for preservice elementary teachers improved their self-efficacy beliefs toward science teaching using the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI-B). The results were compared against the number of years the students had been undergraduates. All students improved their science teaching self-efficacy (including the freshmen) but only the juniors and seniors experienced significant gains in outcome expectancy. The observed gains in self-efficacy were likely due to increases in cognitive content mastery—the process of successfully learning new material, and the gain in outcome expectancy were probably influenced by the number of field experiences within their teacher-education program. Geoscience departments should, therefore, offer inquiry-based Earth Science content courses designed specifically for preservice elementary teachers to improve their self-efficacy and content knowledge, thus, meeting the needs of this critical student population.

Abstract:Incorporating STS-based instruction in K-12, particularly, elementary classrooms, is contingent upon proper preparation of a teaching force that understands STS issues and is well equipped to focus instruction on such issues. It is, therefore, imperative that teacher beliefs, attitude, and understanding of STS issues and STS-focused instruction are considered and addressed during teacher education programs and particularly methods courses. The purpose of the current case study was to examine a small group of elementary pre-service teachers’ experiences and reflection on the STS component of a science methods course, pre and post environmental literacy, views and attitude toward STS issues and instruction, and how their experiences influenced their views and attitudes. The results of this study are promising and allow us to examine the experiences and perceptions of individual students. All five participants who began the course with minimal knowledge of STS issues and little to no confidence or willingness to teach about STS issues, ended the course with a greater understanding of STS issues, skills to deal with and teach STS issues, and willingness to take action and incorporate STS-based instruction. The study’s participants suggested that multiple aspects of the exploratory and STS-focused course allowed for them to rethink some of their previous ideas, gain a deep understanding of STS issues, and become equipped to take action and also incorporate STS-based instruction into their future classrooms.

Abstract:We discuss the development, implementation, and assessment of a course for science undergraduates designed to help them develop an awareness and a deeper appreciation of the intellectual demands of physics teaching. The course focused on increasing student enthusiasm and confidence in teaching by providing well supported teaching opportunities and exposure to physics education research. The course assessment methods include 1) pre/post-tests measures of attitude and expectations about science teaching, 2) self and peer evaluation of student teaching, 3) content-based pre/post-tests given to students who received instruction from the student teachers, and 4) audio-taped focus group discussions in the absence of the instructor and TA to evaluate student perspective on different aspects of the course and its impact.
Brief Training and Intensive Mentoring Guide Postdoctoral Scholars to Student-Centered Instruction

Abstract:The Science Teaching Experience Program-Working in Science Education (STEP-WISE) provides teaching experience for postdoctoral scholars holding full-time research appointments. Through a combination of mentorship, deliberate practice, and feedback, the postdocs learn and apply inclusive, evidence-based pedagogies. STEP-WISE is integrated into postdocs' demanding schedules and is sustainable for institutions to run. Here, we assess the effectiveness of STEP-WISE. We used the Classroom Observation Protocol for Undergraduate STEM instruction to quantify instructor and student behaviors in 20 STEP-WISE class sessions from seven courses designed and taught by postdocs in the program. We found that all of the postdocs used student-centered teaching strategies. Also, using a design-based research framework, we studied the program to identify the salient components of its design. Four interconnected key elements contribute to the program's success: 1) two training sessions, 2) a precourse meeting with the mentor, 3) implementation of active-learning strategies with support, and 4) debriefing with the mentor after each class session. STEP-WISE is a replicable model to support postdocs seeking training and experience in evidence-based teaching practices geared to improving undergraduate education and transforming pedagogical practice. We conclude that high-impact teaching can be learned early in a career with streamlined training and intensive mentoring.
Elementary preservice teacher preparation to teach mathematics and science in an integrated STEM framework

Abstract:A mixed-methods research design with a sequential, explanatory approach was used to investigate the extent to which successful completion of integrated mathematics and science methods of instruction courses related to elementary preservice teachers’ attitudes toward and confidence in teaching integrated STEM lessons. Participants (n = 24) were enrolled in their final two semesters of a teacher preparation program at a four-year public university leading to dual certification in elementary (K-6) and special education. Quantitative data were collected using the STEM Attitudes Questionnaire and the STEM Confidence Questionnaire and administered as a pre, post, and delayed post measure. Qualitative data were obtained from focus group participants and open-ended questions added to the delayed post-measures. Results indicated an overall positive change in attitudes and confidence over the 11-month period but no statistically significant difference in the participants’ attitudes toward or confidence in teaching integrated STEM lessons. Important implications for the numerous stakeholders of STEM education are presented.
The effect of ritodrine on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in normal and diabetic pregnant women.

Abstract:The metabolic effects of a one hour intravenous infusion of the \g=b\-2\x=req-\ receptor stimulating drug ritodrine were studied in seven normal pregnant women, three White class A pregnant diabetics and eight White class B-D pregnant diabetics. During ritodrine infusion all subjects in the three groups exhibited increases in plasma glucose (1.0, 1.6 and 2.1 mmol/l respectively), free fatty acids (360, 850 and 1150 \g=m\mol/l), lactate (0.43, 0.80 and 0.86 mmol/l) and \g=b\-hydroxybutyrate and decreases in standard bicarbonate. The rise in plasma glucose, free fatty acids and lactate was more pronounced in insulin treated diabetic. The rises in \g=b\-hydroxybutyrateand decreases in standard bicarbonate were of the same magnitude in all three groups. Plasma potassium fell in all subjects, whereas no detectable changes in plasma sodium were observed. The endocrine pancreatic function was assessed by measuring plasma insulin (White class A and normals), C-peptide (White class B-D) and glucagon (all subjects). The results suggest that the diabetogenic changes induced by ritodrine are augmented with the severity of diabetes but not ascribable to a diabetes-like change in the function of the endocrine pancreas. Ritodrine (p-hydroxy-phenylethyl-p-hydroxy-norepinephrine) is a /í-2-receptor stimulating drug widely used in obstetrics for its ability to stop labour and prevent premature parturition. ^-mimetic drugs influence metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and electro¬ lytes. These drugs exert a diabetogenic effect despite a simultaneous increase in the release of insulin (Lunell et al. 1977; Thomas et al. 1977; Goldberg et al. 1975; Kauppila et al. 1978; Massaro et al. 1977; Fredholm et al. 1978). The role of glucagon in this context has only been sparsely investigated and results are conflicting (Gerich et al. 1974; Benson et al. 1977; Lipshitz Sc Vinik 1978; Spellacy et al. 1978). The aim of the present study was to elucidate further the metabolic actions of ritodrine on pregnant normal and diabetic women classified according to White (1965). To accomplish this, parameters of carbohydrate and lipid meta¬ bolism as well as plasma concentrations of the pancreatic glucoregulatory hormones, insulin and glucagon have been studied in normal and diabetic latepregnant women subjected to intravenous infusion of ritodrine. MATERIAL AND METHODS Subjects Eighteen pregnant women were included in the study. They were divided into three groups. The first group consisted of seven normal, non-potential diabetic women with¬ out glucosuria and without any medication. The second group consisted of three diabetic women belonging to White class A and the third group of eight diabetic women belonging to White class B-D. White class A patients were treated with diet only, whereas the White class B-D patients were treated with diet and combined inter¬ mediate and fast-acting insulin given twice a day, according to Pedersen (1977). Procedure The procedure was approved by the medical board which found that the drug in the actual doses would be harmless for maternal and foetal cardiovascular system and metabolism. The nature and implications of the experiment were explained to the subjects and all gave their consent. The studies were carried out between the 35th and 39th gestational week. None of the women were in labour. Normals and White class A patients were studied after an overnight fast, whereas White class B-D patients had their usual diet and insulin. Instead they were studied over two successive days, one day serving as a control day where no ritodrine was given. Only one patient changed insulin-dose between the two days with a decrease of eight international units in the morning insulin-dose (64 to 56 IU). An indwelling catheter was inserted in an antecubital vein and blood samples were collected without stasis. Fifty mg ritodrine (Utopar Ido®) was dissolved in 500 ml isotonic saline. This solution was infused iv in the opposite arm at a rate of 0.2 mg/min by means of an infusion pump. Infusions started at 9 a.m. and continued for 60 min. Thus each woman was given a total ol 12 mg ritodrine. Chemical determinations Plasma glucose was analyzed by a glucose dehydrogenase method (Banaiiih et al. 1975) and plasma sodium and potassium by llame photometry. Standard bicarbonate was measured by means of a Radiometer acid-base analyzer (ABL-2) and blood lactate by the method of Gutmann Se Wahlefeld (¡974). Plasma /7-hydroxybutyrate was de¬ termined essentially as described by Williamson Se Mellanby (1974) except that the formation of NADH was measured fluorometrically. Blood was deproteinized in per¬ chloric acid immediately after sampling. Plasma free fatty acids (FFA) were measured by a radiochemical assay (Ho 8c Meng 1969). Total plasma cortisol was assayed by a competitive proteinbinding method (Kehlet et al. 1974) and plasma insulin and glucagon by radioimmunoassays (Kühl 8Holst 1976). Plasma C-peptide was determined according to Heding (¡975) using antibody M ¡230 (Faber et al. ¡976). Results are expressed as mean + sem. The figures depict the changes in electrolytes, metabolites and hormones as the differences between the value at the indicated time and the initial value, i.e. the result found immediately before the ritodrine infusion was started. For White class B-D patients separate curves are designed for the ritodrine day and the control day, the differences between the two curves being assumed to express the effect of ritodrine on the parameters under study. For statistical purposes the 60 min mean values have been compared except for lactate and potassium where the 120 min mean values have been used. The statistical evaluation of the data was performed by Student's ¡-test for unpaired observations between the groups and by Student's /-test for paired observations within the groups. Differences resulting in F-values below 0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS Table 1 gives the mean initial values as measured at 08.50 a.m. representing fasting values for normals and White class A patients. White class B-D patients had their usual morning meal and insulin-dose which probably explains the higher plasma glucose (8.2 and 9.4 mmol/1) and lower plasma FFA concentra¬ tions (500 /¿mol/1) in these patients. Plasma /3-hydroxybutyrate concentration was significantly higher in diabetics than in normals. In contrast concentrations of plasma electrolytes, glucagon and insulin were similar in all groups. Following ritodrine plasma glucose rose in all subjects and reached a peak value at 60 min. A Learning Experience Design Approach to Online Professional Development for Teaching Science through the Arts: Evaluation of Teacher Content Knowledge, Self-Efficacy and STEAM Perceptions

Abstract:Traditional teacher professional development (PD) programs frequently lack sufficient face-to-face preparation time to adequately support the implementation of evidence-based pedagogical strategies in classrooms, with teachers citing insufficient preparedness and training time for new methods. To investigate potentials for online PD methods to effectively address these issues, while increasing sustainability, this study examined teachers in Title-I elementary schools spanning multiple school districts participating in a large-scale online PD certificate program preparing teachers over 10 instructional weeks to implement Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) (S)cience, (T)echnology, (E)ngineering, (A)rts, (M)ath (STEAM) curricular instruction with goals of increasing teachers' science content knowledge, self-efficacy to implement STEAM instruction, and STEAM teaching perceptions. Paired sample t-tests indicate teachers' life science content knowledge, self-efficacy, and STEAM perceptions increased significantly after completing the online PD. Multiple regression analyses identified teachers' science content knowledge and STEAM perceptions as statistically significant predictors of teachers' self-efficacy to implement STEAM instructional strategies. Teachers' posttest course evaluations were gleaned, highlighting three emergent themes: learning experience design, modality, and online teacher collaboration. Utilizing a mixed method approach, these qualitative insights corroborated the quantitative trends, describing how specific aspects of the pedagogical learning experience design (LXD) framework operationalized in the online course fostered a practitioner development learning environment, focused on supporting teachers' learning needs. Results suggest practical design implications for sustainably increasing the efficacy of PD through online teacher training developed in conjunction with LXD models for iterative improvement and design of high-quality online instructional PD programs.
Do Inquiring Minds Have Positive Attitudes? The Science Education of Preservice Elementary Teachers

Abstract:Owing to their potential impact on students' cognitive and non-cognitive outcomes, the negative attitudes towards science held by many elementary teachers are a critical issue that needs to be addressed. This study focuses on the science education of pre-service elementary teachers with the goal of improving their attitudes before they begin their professional lives as classroom teachers. Specifically, this study builds on a small body of research to examine whether exposure to inquiry-based science content courses that actively involve students in the collaborative process of learning and discovery can promote a positive change in attitudes toward science across several different dimensions. To examine this issue, surveys and administrative data were collected from over 200 students enrolled in the Hands-on-Science (HoS) program for pre-service teachers at the University of Texas at Austin, as well as more than 200 students in a comparison group enrolled in traditional lecture-style classes. Quantitative analyses reveal that after participating in HoS courses, pre-service teachers significantly increased their scores on scales measuring confidence, enjoyment, anxiety, and perceptions of relevance, while those in the comparison group experienced a decline in favorable attitudes to science. These patterns offer empirical support for the attitudinal benefits of inquiry-based instruction and have implications for the future learning opportunities available to students at all education levels.
Teaching the Nature of Science Improves Scientific Literacy Among Students Not Majoring in STEM

Abstract:Traditionally, science courses focus on knowledge and practices within specific disciplines. There has long been a call, however, to increase the focus on the nature and process of science as a way to improve scientific literacy and increase the transfer of knowledge. Despite this, there are few systematic studies that seek to understand the impact of this approach. Revising a STEM course in a liberal arts curriculum to primarily focus on the nature and process of science rather than on the content of a specific discipline increased student scores on the Test of Scientific Literacy Skills and improved perceptions of STEM. In the revised course, students self-reported higher levels of confidence in their ability to learn scientific information and their ability to contribute to scientific progress compared to traditional methods. These data and other literature suggest that the traditional knowledge-focused approach to science education is insufficient to facilitate scientific literacy and address equity gaps in STEM. Proposed is a model where scientific literacy and feelings of inclusion in STEM are the product of direct engagement in the process of science and careful evaluation of the nature of science. Long-term, a holistic approach that includes an authentic discussion of the enterprise of sciences is needed to prepare students to engage in future problems that are best solved by cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Facilitating Preservice Elementary Science Teachers’ Shift from Learner to Teacher of Engineering Design-Based Science Teaching

Abstract:The role of engineering in science and mathematics education continues to emerge as a contributing factor to improving STEM education. Efforts across different countries include the integration of engineering in K-12 curriculum, after school programs, and inservice teacher professional development. Only recently have science teacher educators begun to introduce engineering in science teacher preparation programs. By incorporating novel curriculum and design-related experiences, we can begin to explore how preservice teachers not only learn about engineering, but more importantly, learn how to teach science using engineering design. In this study, we explore different ways 45 elementary preservice science teachers characterize and construct new understandings about engineering design-based science teaching. Data were gathered via self-interviews and reflective narratives. Data analysis entailed systematic and consistent open coding across transcripts. Document analysis served as a means of triangulation, reinforcing and reaffirming claims corroborated through the analysis of interview data. Using the teacher as learner framework, we contend that preservice teachers, when engaged in an engineering design-based methods course, demonstrate positive shifts from being learners to teachers of science by embodying the participatory, performative, and experiential nature of engineering design. To support preservice teacher development, we propose that teacher education programs incorporate engineering design-based learning experiences throughout teacher preparation rather than in a single semester or year. This means integrating more and earlier opportunities for preservice teachers to develop and apply their understandings of engineering design and design teaching, potentially leading to earlier shifts and increased design-based pedagogical understandings.

Abstract:Students who drop out of their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors commonly report that they lack skills critical to STEM learning and career pursuits. Many training programs exist to develop students’ learning skills and they typically achieve small to medium effects on behaviors and performance. However, these programs require large investments of students’ and instructors’ time and effort, which limits their applicability to large lecture course formats commonly employed in early undergraduate STEM coursework. This study examined whether brief, digital training modules designed to help students apply learning strategies and self-regulated learning principles effectively in their STEM courses can impact students’ behaviors and performance in a large biology lecture course. Results indicate that a 2-hr Science of Learning to Learn training had significant effects on students’ use of resources for planning, monitoring, and strategy use, and improved scores on quizzes and exams. These findings indicate that a brief, self-guided, online training can increase desirable learning behaviors and improve STEM performance with minimal cost to learners or instructors. Implications for future design of interventions and their provision to students in need of support are discussed.

Abstract:This paper assesses the relationship between participation in two tertiary science courses and the science teaching efficacy beliefs (STEBs) of one cohort of preservice elementary teachers over a four-year period. Two Type II case studies were conducted within the courses. Data were collected through 26 administrations of the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument-B and semi structured interviews. Results showed that participation in the subjects covaried with increases in the participants’ STEBs. These increases in STEBs remained durable for two years. Implications for these findings are discussed within the paper.

Abstract:There is a growing need for workers with STEM-aligned training in the modern global economy, but a paucity of workers to fill these positions. One important contributor to this issue is low student persistence in STEM. Nontraditional science courses that utilize more active-participation and learning are attractive as tools to increase student persistence and engender more interest in STEM. Herein is described the content and implementation of the undergraduate chemistry-based service-learning course, <i>Chemistry 1898: Service Learning</i>, that was offered in Spring 2019 at Tulane University. The goal of the course was to increase self-efficacy in chemistry and sustain undergraduate interest in STEM. The course also serves to increase STEM interest in the New Orleans public-school students. Chemistry 1898 features a well-rounded curriculum and diverse activities. The enrolled undergraduate students were not only taught chemistry concepts (general chemistry and supramolecular chemistry) but also asked to present the chemical concepts using attention-grabbing demonstrations to public-school students in the New Orleans area. In addition, the course covered multiple nonscience topics, including the pedagogy of service-learning, background on the New Orleans public-school system, and a guide for how to work with the community. The course also involved student reflection activities/surveys and interfaced with the Tulane Center for Public Service. Preliminary qualitative results from a set of anonymous pre- and poststudent surveys indicated that the undergraduate students gained self-efficacy in the general chemistry concepts covered in the course. Although the course did not have an effect on the career choices of the undergraduate students, the majority of the students were already very interested in a STEM career. Abstract:Students teaching students is widely accepted to be one of the most effective teaching methods with benefits for both the students teaching and those that are learning (Sorcinelli, 1991; Stigmar, 2016). Previous studies have found that students acting as instructors experience improved content knowledge and develop skills and confidence in communication of complex subject matter (Swim, 1999). Students learning from other students experience increased enjoyment and enthusiasm in learning science (Hinck, 2013; Rao et al., 2007). We created a cross-age scientific curricular experience program model that utilized hands-on activities with instruction by trained high school students. This study aims to understand how these curricular experiences impact the self-efficacy of student instructors as well as student learner engagement. We found that student instructors commonly have positive teaching experiences and feel more confident about teaching after each curricular experience. Student engagement during all curricular experiences was high and reflections from instructors, students, and classroom-teachers highlighted the benefits of students teaching students. Overall, this study shows support for cross-age instruction and the importance of hands-on activities in scientific education. We hope educators increase cross-age instruction and hands-on activities throughout their science classes.
Pedagogical knowledge for active-learning instruction in large undergraduate biology courses: a large-scale qualitative investigation of instructor thinking

Abstract:BackgroundThough active-learning instruction has the potential to positively impact the preparation and diversity of STEM graduates, not all instructors are able to achieve this potential. One important factor is the teacher knowledge that instructors possess, including their pedagogical knowledge. Pedagogical knowledge is the knowledge about teaching and learning that is not topic-specific, such as knowledge of learning theory, classroom management, and student motivation. We investigated the pedagogical knowledge that 77 instructors who report implementing active-learning instruction used as they analyzed video clips of lessons in large active-learning biology courses. We used qualitative content analysis, and drew on cognitive and sociocultural perspectives of learning, to identify and characterize the pedagogical knowledge instructors employed. We used the collective thinking of these instructors to generate a framework of pedagogical knowledge for active-learning instruction in large undergraduate biology courses.ResultsWe identified seven distinct components of pedagogical knowledge, as well as connections among these components. At the core of their thinking, participants evaluated whether instruction provided opportunities for students to generate ideas beyond what was presented to them and to engage in scientific practices. They also commonly considered student motivation to engage in this work and how instruction maximized equity among students. Participants noticed whether instructors monitored and responded to student thinking in real-time, how instruction prompted metacognition, and how links were built between learning tasks. Participants also thought carefully about managing the logistics of active-learning lessons.ConclusionsInstructors who report using active-learning instruction displayed knowledge of principles of how people learn, practical knowledge of teaching strategies and behaviors, and knowledge related to classroom management. Their deep knowledge of pedagogy suggests that active-learning instruction requires much more than content knowledge built through training in the discipline, yet many college STEM instructors have little or no training in teaching. Further research should test this framework of pedagogical knowledge in different instruction contexts, including different STEM disciplines. Additional research is needed to understand what teacher knowledge is critical to effective active-learning instruction and how the development of this knowledge is best facilitated. Achieving widespread improvement in undergraduate STEM education will likely require transforming our approach to preparing and supporting undergraduate instructors.

Abstract:In this era of instructional transformation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses at the postsecondary level in the United States, the focus has been on educating science faculty about evidence-based instructional practices, i.e. practices that have been empirically proven to enhance student learning outcomes. The literature on professional development at the secondary level has demonstrated a tight interconnectedness between ones’ beliefs about teaching and learning and one's instructional practices and the need to attend to faculty's beliefs when engaging them in instructional change processes. Although discipline-based education researchers have made great strides in characterizing instructional practices of STEM faculty, much less attention has been given to understanding the beliefs of STEM about teaching and learning. Knowledge of instructors’ thinking can inform faculty professional development initiatives that encourage faculty to reflect on the beliefs that drive their classroom practices. Therefore, this study characterized the interplay between beliefs and instructional practices of nineteen assistant chemistry professors. Luft and Roehrig's Teaching Beliefs Interview protocol was used to capture beliefs; classroom observations and course artifacts were collected to capture practices. Clear trends were identified between faculty's beliefs (characterized through constant-comparative analysis and cluster analysis) and practices (characterized with Blumberg's Learner-Centered Teaching Rubric). Overall, beliefs of most of the participants were somewhat aligned with their instructional practices, with the exception of one cluster of faculty who held student-centered beliefs, but received only moderate scores on the Learner-Centered Teaching Rubric.
