Abstract:Cloaking is a challenging topic in the field of wave motion, and is of significant theoretical value. In this article, a type of carpet cloak has been theoretically designed for water waves by using the effective medium and transformation theory. This carpet cloak device, created by a three-dimensional printer, is composed of a periodic structure which realizes the equivalent anisotropic water depth. We demonstrate its excellent cloaking performance numerically and experimentally in a wide range of frequencies and angles of incidence, with low wave attenuation characteristics and simple device realization of this carpet cloak illustrating that water wave transformation is a powerful method with which to manipulate water waves.

Abstract:Inspired by electromagnetic waveguide cloaks with gradient index metamaterials, we fabricated a broadband cloak with simply a gradient depth profile on the bottom and without any other structures on the top to confine water waves in a certain area for cloaking regions. The new physics of mode conversion for water waves is first found. The experimental and numerical simulation results are in good agreement and show that the presented device has a nice performance for various situations and is feasible over a broadband of working frequencies. Being easy to construct, this design is potentially of significance for port applications.

Abstract:Invisible coats inspired by metamaterials have been widely explored for different physical quantities and even with multifunctional response capabilities. In particular, a magnetic cloak has gained special attention for high practicability when compared with its electromagnetic counterparts. In this work, we report a bi-physical metamaterial invisible coating technique that could effectively hide underwater objects from being detected via both magnetic fields and acoustic waves. An ultra-thin coat could work for objects having irregular shapes like squares, greatly broadening potential practical applications. The bilayer magnetic cloaking technique is fully exploited to cast a spatially dependent permeability profile, which could quasi-statically balance out the diamagnetic response of irregular-shaped metals based on field “scattering” cancellation. Integrated with this magnetic cloak, an ultrathin acoustic metasurface made of periodic microbubbles is developed to achieve broadband acoustic absorption for acoustic stealth. This integrated magnetic-acoustic bi-physical conformal coat may lead to important applications not only for military purposes but also for civilian apparatus in shielding the field and wave disturbances, for example, in medical scanning.

Abstract:Wave invisibility in confined space has been proved practical significance in mechanical engineering and military fields. In this work, a flexural wave cloak of a corner-domain target in a metamaterial plate with proportional integral (PI) active control circuit is proposed. According to the double reflection principle and mechanical characteristic at the boundary, wave fields for a corner-domain target are defined as a collection of incident, scattering and three mirror domains. The unknown scattering mode coefficients are determined by the image method and boundary conditions. The dynamic stress concentration, scattering amplitude and scattering cross-section for the corner-domain target are obtained. The cloaking configuration is composed of multiple equally spaced concentric layers, which are filled with piezoelectric (PZT) patches. In addition, these PZT patches are connected to the active control circuit with proportional integral (PI) control module. The results indicate that the flexural wave cloak can reduce the dynamic stress concentration, scattering amplitude and scattering cross-section in corner domain. Compared to the original structure without PI active control, the effective frequency range of the active cloak can be extended by 20%.

Abstract:Invisibility devices based on coordinate transformation have opened up a new field of considerable interest. Such a device is proposed to render the hidden object undetectable under the flow of light or sound, by guiding and controlling the wave path through an engineered space surrounding the object. We present here the first practical realization of a low-loss and broadband acoustic cloak for underwater ultrasound. This metamaterial cloak is constructed with a network of acoustic circuit elements, namely serial inductors and shunt capacitors. Our experiment clearly shows that the acoustic cloak can effectively bend the ultrasound waves around the hidden object, with reduced scattering and shadow. Due to the non-resonant nature of the building elements, this low loss (~6dB/m) cylindrical cloak exhibits excellent invisibility over a broad frequency range from 52 to 64 kHz in the measurements. The low visibility of the cloaked object for underwater ultrasound shed a light on the fundamental understanding of manipulation, storage and control of acoustic waves. Furthermore, our experimental study indicates that this design approach should be scalable to different acoustic frequencies and offers the possibility for a variety of devices based on coordinate transformation.

Abstract:<p>Invisibility cloaks, a class of attractive devices that can hide objects from external observers, have become practical reality owing to the advent of metamaterials. In previous cloaking schemes, almost all demonstrated cloaks are time‐invariant and are investigated in the system that is motionless, and hence they are limited to hide stationary objects. In addition, the current cloaks are typically static or require manual operation to achieve dynamic cloaking. Here, a smart Doppler cloak operating in broadband and full polarizations is reported, which consists of a time‐modulated reflective metasurface and a sensing‐feedback time‐varying electronic control system. Experimental results show that the smart Doppler cloak is able to respond self‐adaptively and rapidly to the ever‐changing velocity of moving objects and then cancel different Doppler shifts in real time, without any human intervention. Moreover, the wideband and polarization‐insensitive features enable the cloak to be more robust and practical. To illustrate the capabilities of the proposed approach, the smart Doppler cloak is measured in three scenarios with two different groups of linearly‐polarized incidences at 3.3 and 4.9 GHz, and one group circularly‐polarized incidences at 6.0 GHz, respectively.</p>

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate ultra-broadband three dimensional carpet cloaking for full polarization. A non-resonant metamaterial, which exhibits broadband magnetic and electric anisotropy with little dispersion, is used as a main building block in the cloak design. Nearly perfect cloaking performance is confirmed over a broad bandwidth with frequency scanning measurement. In particular, the experimental result shows that phase is well preserved by the cloak.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a bendable cloaking structure composed of obliquely stacked planar metallic shells that individually enclose the objects to be hidden. The ensemble of shells acts as a disordered oblique grating capable of bending along a curved structure and exhibits broadband invisibility from 0.2 to 1.0 THz. Hiding cloaked objects sized hundreds of microns could prevent the detection of certain powders that are sensitive to terahertz waves; such a cloaking structure can also be considered as a shape-changing passageway that transfers the electromagnetic waves without interfering with them. Our approach provides a unique way to achieve broadband electromagnetic invisibility.

Abstract:Despite its remarkably fast development in the past few years, the technology of invisibility cloaking is still facing many serious bottlenecks, e.g. the bandwidth, the superluminal limitation, dispersion, loss, etc. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated an alternative approach of invisibility cloaking that can combine technical advantages of all current major cloaking strategies in a unified manner and thus can solve bottlenecks of individual strategies. A broadband cylindrical invisibility cloak in free space is designed based on scattering cancellation (the approach of previous plasmonic cloaking), and implemented with anisotropic metamaterials (a unique property of previous transformation-optics cloaking). Particularly, non-superluminal speed of light in the cloak, a superior advantage of non-Euclidian conformal mapping cloaks, is inherited in this design, and thus is the reason of its relatively broad bandwidth. This demonstration provides a possibility for future practical implementation of cloaking devices at large scales.

Abstract:We present the design, fabrication and performance test of a quasi three-dimensional carpet cloak made of normal dielectric in the microwave regime. Taking advantage of a simple linear coordinate transformation we design a carpet cloak with homogeneous anisotropic medium and then practically realize the device with multilayer of alternating normal dielectric slabs based on the effective medium theory. As a proof-of-concept example, we fabricate the carpet cloak with multilayer of FR4 dielectric slabs with air spacing. The performance of the fabricated design is verified through full-wave numerical simulation and measurement of the far-field scattering electromagnetic waves in a microwave anechoic chamber. Experimental results have demonstrated pronounced cloaking effect in a very broad band from 8 GHz to 18 GHz (whole X and Ku band) due to the low loss, non-dispersive feature of the multilayer dielectric structure.

Abstract:The application of transformation theory to underwater acoustics has been a challenging task because highly anisotropic density is unachievable in water. A possible strategy is to exploit the anisotropic modulus rather than density, although it has not been experimentally demonstrated. We present an annular underwater acoustic cloak designed from particular graded solid microstructures. The geometry tailored microstructures mimic metafluid with highly anisotropic modulus through substantially suppressed shear waves. Transient wave experiments are conducted with the cloak in a designed two-dimensional underwater waveguide system and proved excellent cloaking performance for an enclosed target over broadband frequencies 9–15 kHz. This finding paves the way for controlling underwater acoustics using the structured anisotropic modulus metafluid.

Abstract:Acoustic carpet cloak in air has become an attractive topic in the past few years and has been realized in many feasible ways. However, underwater acoustic carpet cloak still suffers from lacking operator flexibility. Inspired by those works before, we design an impedance matching underwater acoustic carpet cloak using pentamode materials under normal incidence. The carpet cloak employs an effective velocity lower than water to restore the distorted reflected waves and its effective density is tuned to guarantee impedance matching with water. It is also demonstrated that a cloaked area with a higher height can be formed by simply using more microstructures in the cloak. Simulation results depict that the proposed carpet cloak has a great performance in a wide range of frequency. Our investigation may have potential applications in simplifying the underwater acoustic carpet cloak design.

Abstract:Guiding surface electromagnetic waves around disorder without disturbing the wave amplitude or phase is in great demand for modern photonic and plasmonic devices, but is fundamentally difficult to realize because light momentum must be conserved in a scattering event. A partial realization has been achieved by exploiting topological electromagnetic surface states, but this approach is limited to narrow-band light transmission and subject to phase disturbances in the presence of disorder. Recent advances in transformation optics apply principles of general relativity to curve the space for light, allowing one to match the momentum and phase of light around any disorder as if that disorder were not there. This feature has been exploited in the development of invisibility cloaks. An ideal invisibility cloak, however, would require the phase velocity of light being guided around the cloaked object to exceed the vacuum speed of light--a feat potentially achievable only over an extremely narrow band. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally show that the bottlenecks encountered in previous studies can be overcome. We introduce a class of cloaks capable of remarkable broadband surface electromagnetic waves guidance around ultrasharp corners and bumps with no perceptible changes in amplitude and phase. These cloaks consist of specifically designed nonmagnetic metamaterials and achieve nearly ideal transmission efficiency over a broadband frequency range from 0(+) to 6 GHz. This work provides strong support for the application of transformation optics to plasmonic circuits and could pave the way toward high-performance, large-scale integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:Hiding an isolated object in free space using a transmissive invisibility cloak has become a significant research area, propelled by advancements in metamaterials and transformation optics over the past decade. Despite the availability of various simplified methods for implementing transmissive cloaks, issues such as impedance mismatches and narrow working bandwidths often arise, posing challenges. Achieving a broadband transmissive cloak in free space has proven to be particularly arduous. This study presents a near‐perfect one‐directional broadband transmissive cloak constructed from multilayer metasurfaces of arbitrary shapes, showcasing superior performance across a broadband frequency range. The phase distribution of the metasurfaces and the efficacy of the transmissive cloak are assessed using the generalized Snell's law. An experimental near‐perfect broadband transmissive cloak is successfully demonstrated to operate within the frequency range of 8.5 to 11.2 GHz. This study contributes to reducing the density and mass of cloaks, thereby facilitating the expansion of cloaking capabilities in various directions and across different frequency bands.

Abstract:Unidirectional cloaks or carpet cloaks have become an essential branch of invisibility cloaks due to non-extreme parameters that are relatively easy for realization and potential applications. So far, a unidirectional cloak for transverse electric (TE) polarized wave has been successfully realized to hide an object in the air along a single direction with almost ideal performance. However, a practical method to achieve a unidirectional cloak for transverse magnetic (TM) polarization is still missing. In this paper, we successfully have designed, fabricated, and measured a full-parameter unidirectional TM-wave cloak in free space. In comparison to the previously-realized TE-wave counterpart, our cloak uses a perfect electric conductor boundary to obey the free-space symmetry condition of the TM incident wave and is therefore much more convenient to fabricate. The cloaking performance of the fabricated sample has been demonstrated via both full-wave numerical simulation and near-field measurement.

Abstract:Transformation optics (TO) provides a powerful tool to manipulate electromagnetic waves, enabling the design of invisibility cloaks, which can render objects invisible. Despite many years of research, however, invisibility cloaks experimentally realized thus far can only operate at a single frequency. The narrow bandwidth significantly restricts the practical applications of invisibility cloaks and other TO devices. Here, a general design strategy is proposed to realize a multiband anisotropic metamaterial characterized by two principal permittivity components, i.e., one infinite and the other spatially gradient. Through a proper transformation and combination of such metamaterials, an omnidirectional invisibility cloak is experimentally implemented, which is impedance-matched to free space at multiple frequencies. Both far-field numerical simulations and near-field experimental mappings confirm that this cloak can successfully suppress scattering from multiple large-scale objects simultaneously at 5 and 10 GHz. The design strategy and corresponding practical realization bring multiband transformation optical devices one step closer to reality.

Abstract:Previous acoustic cloaks designed with transformation acoustics always involve inhomogeneous material. In this paper, a design of acoustic polygonal cloak is proposed using linear polygonal transformation method. The designed acoustic polygonal cloak has homogeneous and anisotropic parameters, which is much easier to realize in practice. Furthermore, a possible acoustic metamaterial structure to realize the cloak is proposed. Simulation results on the real structure show that the metamaterial acoustic cloak is effective to reduce the scattering of the object.
