Abstract:Nursing has evolved, yet media representation has arguably failed to keep up. This work explores why representation has been slow in accurately depicting nurses' responsibilities, impacts on public perceptions and professional identity. A critical realist review was employed as this method enables in-depth exploration into why something exists. A multidisciplinary approach was adopted, drawing from feminist, psychological and sociological theories to provide insightful understanding and recommendations. One main feminist lens has been implemented, using Laura Mulvey's 'Male-Gaze' framework for content analysis of three nurse-related advertisements to explore how the profession's female status influences representation, public perception and how this might impact nursing. Nurse representation has important real-world consequences. It is essential to improve unnecessary negative portrayals and contest ingrained stereotypes as there are costs to public opinion and nursing's self-identity. Nursing's female status has an impact within a male-dominated media industry, with a leisurely approach adopted toward changing representation. Media images become societally ingrained, this reiterates the significance of accurate/positive depictions. Social media is an instant method of communication with the public to combat stereotypes and maintain engagement to provide better understanding of what nurses do.

Abstract:BACKGROUND/AIMS The exact role of the novel hepatotropic TT virus regarding the etiology of viral hepatitis, as well as the progression towards chronic liver disease has as yet not been defined. Moreover, the contribution of TTV infection to the course of chronic hepatitis B or C virus infections also still awaits clarification. Hence, the aim of our study was to investigate the impact of TTV infection on clinical severity and histology of chronic liver disease originating from HBV and/or HCV infections in Thai patients concomitant with the determination of TTV's association with non-B, non-C chronic liver disease and compared to its prevalence among voluntary blood donors. METHODOLOGY DNA was extracted from the sera collected from 115 hepatitis B patients, 41 hepatitis C, and 48 negative for either viral marker, who had all been diagnosed with chronic liver disease ranging from chronic hepatitis over cirrhosis to hepatocellular carcinoma. The sera obtained from 200 voluntary blood donors served as controls. TTV DNA was amplified by seminested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) employing primers derived from the genome's most conserved region. The PCR products were analyzed by gel electrophoresis. Liver function tests were performed by means of a chemical analyzer. RESULTS TTV DNA was detected in 20% of the HBV-positive and 19.5% of the HCV-positive chronic liver disease patients. Within the group of patients seronegative for both viral markers, TTV was detected in 8.3%. Furthermore, its DNA was identified in 6.8% of the HCC patients and finally, in 7% of the blood donors. Yet, no significant differences between TTV infected and non-infected patients were found as to demographic data, assumed source of infection, biochemical abnormalities, or severity of liver histology. CONCLUSIONS TTV appears to be highly prevalent on a worldwide scale but regarding etiology of and progression towards serious liver disease, its contribution seems to be minor if not altogether non-existent. Hence, regarding clarification of its clinical significance, further studies are certainly required.

Abstract:AIM: This paper presents a review of the public and professional images of nursing in the literature and explores nurse image in the context of Strasen's self-image model.BACKGROUND: Nurses have struggled since the 1800s with the problem of image. What is known about nurses' image is from the perspective of others: the media, public or other healthcare professionals. Some hints of how nurses see themselves can be found in the literature that suggests how this image could be improved.METHOD: A literature review for all dates up to 2006 was undertaken using PubMed, Medline and CINAHL databases. Additional references were identified from this literature. Sentinel articles and books were manually searched to identify key concepts. Search words used were nurse, nursing, image and self-image. The findings were examined using the framework of Strasen's self-image model.FINDINGS: Public image appears to be intimately intertwined with nurse image. This creates the boundaries that confine and construct the image of nursing. As a profession, nurses do not have a very positive self-image nor do they think highly of themselves.CONCLUSION: Individually, each nurse has the power to shape the image of nursing. However, nurses must also work together to change the systems that perpetuate negative stereotypes of nurses' image.

Abstract:Diffraction‐quality crystals of the bifunctional enzyme fructose 6‐phosphate, 2‐kinase:fructose 2,6‐bisphosphatase from rat testis have been obtained. The crystals were grown in the presence of ATPγS, fructose 6‐phosphate, the detergent n‐octylglucoside, and the precipitant polyethylene glycol 4000. The crystals have the symmetry of the trigonal space group P31/221 with a = b = 83.0 Å and c = 130.6 Å. Flash‐frozen crystals diffract to beyond 2.2 Å, and native data have been collected.

Abstract:This study concentrates on the images of the nurse and nursing seen most commonly in the media and attempts to trace the images back to their origins and to explain their continued use, despite the rapidly changing role of the nurse in today's world. The images have been derived mostly from the historical roots of nursing and sometimes as a reaction to the increasing influence of the feminist movement. The author takes a look at the four main images of the nurse seen in the media, which are the ministering angel, the battleaxe, the naughty nurse and the doctor's handmaiden and then goes on to take a brief look at the other images commonly perpetuated by the media. The author summarizes the probable effects of the media stereotypes on nurses themselves and the service they provide and also takes a look at attempts to dispel these stereotypes.

Abstract:Background: The number of people who access social networking sites continues to increase at an exponential rate. The use of technology is an essential skill for nursing professionals and its development represents a challenge in improving health education, promotion and care. The objective of this systematic review is to analyse the use of social networking sites by healthcare professionals as an intervention tool for evidence-based public health education. Methods: The protocol of this umbrella review was registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42023407249). Searches were carried out in MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), and Cochrane Library of Systematic Reviews, in February 2023. A narrative synthesis of the results was conducted. Results: 1896 articles were found, of which 15 reviews fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Social networks broadened the profession; they were YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram. The target population was mainly young professionals, and they came across different topic areas that addressed health education. Conclusions: It is important to have information backed by scientific evidence to make health decisions. Health professionals active on social networking sites have a unique opportunity to educate the public about health by sharing scientific evidence in an accessible and clear way, which helps to combat misinformation.

Abstract:Abstract Solutions are found for the transmission of 1½-layer subinertial Kelvin waves through an “ideal strait” with parallel channel walls and square corner mouths. This is shown to be a wave interference problem similar to the classical optics problem of multiple beam interference. The outlet of an ideal strait has the same reflection characteristics as the inlet, setting up internal reflections within the strait and a consequent interference condition that has several important consequences: energy transmission of a strait is a function of channel length as well as width; transmission is frequency dependent, and approaches 100% at low frequencies for all channel widths, as long as the dynamics remain linear and inviscid; and the amplitude of the pressure signal on the downstream side of the channel approaches zero as the transmission approaches 100%. Public perceptions of the brand image of nursing: Cross-cultural differences between the United States and China

Abstract:Background: Measures of public opinion regarding nursing's brand image are needed to identify and correct perceptions that are incongruent with the breadth and scope of contemporary nursing practice. Misperceptions of nursing's influence may serve to minimize or disregard nursing's unique contributions to addressing the Social Determinants of Health which are foundational for improving the health of global populations. Purpose: To compare public perceptions of the brand image of nursing between China and the United States (US) and determine whether sociodemographic variables influenced factors between the two countries. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed among members of the Chinese and U.S. public. Perceptions of nursing's brand image were assessed through the original Nursing Brand Image Scale-Public Version in the US (NBIS-P) and when translated to Chinese (NBIS-P-C). Descriptive statistics and multigroup confirmatory factor analyses were used to compare perceptions of the brand image of nursing and to examine the influence of demographics. Discussion: The reliability of the Chinese version of the NBIS-P-C was confirmed by this study. Age and gender did not influence public perceptions of nursing's brand image in either China or the US. Instead, educational attainment was the significant demographic variable and positively correlated with the public's perceptions of nursing in both countries (p < .05). Public respondents with lower educational attainment scored both the traditional nursing factor "Caregiver Virtues/Attributes" (e.g., Trusted, Caring, Nurturing/Mothering) and the factor "Lack Authority/Identity" (e.g., White Cap/Uniform, Subservient, Female) higher, while scoring the factor for "Leadership" (e.g., Decision Makers, Influential, Leaders) significantly lower than those with higher educational levels. Conclusion: A disparity exists between nursing's contemporary contributions to healthcare and the public's limited understanding of the diverse leadership roles all nurses provide, across a variety of settings, and in global public health initiatives. The virtuous traits of the nurse are perceived most directly and immediately by the public while their roles as autonomous decision-makers and leaders are less (or not at all) visible. Enhancing the accuracy and visibility of a strong brand image could advance public perceptions of nurses as experts and leaders in nursing science, thus paving the way for nurses to more effectively direct and influence the health of the public, particularly those with lower educational attainment who represent some of the most vulnerable populations. Targeted interventions that incorporate the educational level of the public offer a foundational opportunity for the nursing profession to correct inaccurate and outdated stereotypes that prevent nurses from achieving their desired brand image as influential leaders. Such campaigns could also be used to inform policy, guide strategic planning, and transform the future direction of the nursing profession.

Abstract:Background: Amidst current misinformation, media literacy is an essential competency for nursing professionals. This study aimed to analyze the level of media health literacy among Spanish undergraduate nursing students, stratifying the results by gender, region, and other associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at five Spanish universities (N = 416) using the Spanish version of the Media Health Literacy (MeHLit-SV) Questionnaire. Results: Students presented an average media health literacy score of 48.73 points. The media health literacy level was significantly higher among students from universities in the central and northeastern regions of Spain (ANOVA Test, p = 0.0002), those who had previously studied in a city (ANOVA Test, p = 0.001), those who combined their studies with employment (ANOVA Test, p = 0.001), and those residing in communities with fewer than 500 inhabitants (ANOVA Test, p = 0.001). No differences were found based on gender. Conclusions: The media health literacy level of the students was deficient and varied according to socio-economic and socio-educational factors. Understanding the literacy level of future nurses and promoting the inclusion of this competency in their education will enable them to become leaders in improving the population's health self-care.

Abstract:To assess the overall experience of a patient in a hospital, many factors must be analyzed; nonetheless, one of the key aspects is the performance of nurses as they closely interact with patients on many occasions. Nurses carry out many tasks that could be assessed to understand the patient's satisfaction and consequently, the effectiveness of the offered services. To assess their performance, traditionally, expensive, and time-consuming methods such as questionnaires and interviews have been used; nevertheless, the development of social networks has allowed the patients to convey their opinions in a free and public manner. For that reason, in this study, a comprehensive analysis has been performed based on patients' opinions collected from a feedback platform for health and care services, to discover the topics about nurses the patients are more interested in. To do so, a topic modeling technique has been proposed. After this, sentiment analysis has been applied to classify the topics as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Finally, the results have been compared with what the patients think about doctors. The results highlight what topics are most relevant to assess the patient satisfaction and to what extent. The results remark that the opinion about nurses is, in general, more positive than about doctors.

Nursing students' perceptions of community care and other areas of nursing practice - A review of the literature

Abstract:Objectives: To review recent literature on student nurses' perceptions of different areas of nursing practice, in particular community care. Healthcare is changing from care delivery in institutional settings to care to patients in their own homes. Problematic is that nursing students do not see community care as an attractive line of work, and their perceptions of community care do not reflect the realities of the profession. Understanding the factors influencing the perception of the professional field is important to positively influence students' willingness to see community nursing as a future profession. Design: Literature search with accompanying narrative synthesis of primary research. Data sources: ERIC(®), PsycInfo(®), Pubmed(®), and CINAHL(®) (2004-2014) databases using the search terms: 'nursing student', 'student nurse', 'community care', 'community nurse', 'image', 'attitude', and 'perception'. Review methods: After screening 522 retrieved article titles with abstracts, the number of articles was reduced based upon specified inclusion/exclusion criteria leading to inclusion of 34. Evaluation of the references in those articles yielded an additional 5 articles. A narrative synthesis of those articles was created to uncover students' perception of community care, other areas of professional practice, and the factors influencing those perceptions. Results: 39 articles were selected. Results show that many nursing students begin their education with a lay person's conception of the profession, shaped by media representations. Work placements in different settings offer clinical experience that helps students orient themselves towards a future profession. Students prefer hospitals as a place of work, because of the acute nature and technologically advanced level of care offered there. Few students perceive mental health and elderly care as appealing. Perceptions of community care can vary widely, the most prevalent view being that it is unattractive because of its chronic care profile, with little technical skill, untrained workers, and a high workload. However, another view is that it offers challenging and meaningful work because of the variety of caregiving roles and the opportunity to work independently. Conclusions: Few nursing students choose community nursing as a future profession. They have a limited and often mistaken view of community care, and they underestimate the field's complexity because it is less visible than in the environment of acute care. Providing students with specific curricular content and employing a structured approach to preparation for work placement could help build a more positive perception of community care, leading to more students seeing/choosing community care as a desirable field of work.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Gender stereotypes are reproduced in healthcare settings, leading to unequal relationships, discrimination, and sexism. University students express insecurity about their ability to identify and handle these situations. There are gaps in our knowledge about everyday sexism in academic and clinical nursing settings.AIM: To describe how nursing students perceive sexist behavior in their daily life at university and during university teaching.DESIGN: Cross-sectional, multicenter study using an online questionnaire.SETTING: Eight universities that offer nursing degrees in Catalonia.PARTICIPANTS: In total, 317 valid responses were collected. The inclusion criteria were to be a third- or fourth-year undergraduate or a first- or second-year postgraduate nursing student in Catalonia. There were no exclusion criteria. Snowball sampling.METHOD: Online questionnaire designed ad hoc with sociodemographic variables, academic characteristics, and perception of sexism and discrimination in students' daily life collected between November 2020 and March 2021. The Microsexism Against Women Scale was used as a frame of reference to formulate questions on sexism and discrimination at the nursing school and during practicums. A descriptive, bivariate analysis of the data was performed.RESULTS: Students do not place importance on differences between genders in involvement, task distribution, and oral presentation of group work. In this setting, there seems to be no perception of situations of power or inequality. Female students reported a higher frequency of unwanted physical contact than male students; however, the percentage was similar for both in practicums. Everyday sexism and discrimination were perceived at the nursing school but not in practicums.CONCLUSIONS: Everyday sexism is perceived in nursing degrees in the context of relationships within the school but not during classroom teaching or in care settings. Various mechanisms make it difficult for students to consciously detect such behaviors. Addressing sexism in nursing training is necessary to ensure a safe learning environment.

Abstract:The general objective of this research was to analyze the current challenges of nursing care in Latin America. The research work was carried out from the quantitative approach, by means of exploration, collection and critical analysis of documents and bibliographic references. The interpretation techniques of the inquiry were based on the content analysis of the information collected, which allowed the formulation of results. Supported by the analytical-synthetic method, it consisted of mentally decomposing the system studied into several elements to arrive at new knowledge. As a result, it is indicated that nursing faces great challenges in Latin America, as a result of the changes that are occurring in the world, the performance of professional practice requires greater academic preparation. It is concluded that the change of thinking about social problems, the contextualized or situated education in the formation of nursing professionals is one of the answers that lead to future changes.

Abstract:Introduction Newspapers are a predominant channel through which the Chinese public learns about nurses and the nursing profession. However, little nursing research has been performed in China to investigate the newspaper portrayal of nurses, and how the public perceives the role of nurses in the Chinese context is still an ambiguous phenomenon. This study aimed to clarify the public portrayals of nurses in China, and to analyze whether there are changes over time in news content related to nurses in the national newspapers. Design A content analysis of the newspaper articles citing nurses that have been published since each newspaper was established. Method We selected two national daily newspapers as sources to systematically search for articles about nurses from 1949 to 2022. A coding instrument was developed to quantitatively extract the contents of the articles identified. Then, using a mixed methods approach, we analyzed newspaper content to show the roles of nurses presented to the public by the media. Results A total of 317 articles were analyzed. Nurses have been depicted with heterogeneous images in both newspapers with positive wordings and up to 28 types of public images. More than half of the articles portrayed two, three, or more types of images. Among the images of nurses identified, “overworked” appeared the most frequently, followed by “dedicated,” “philanthropic and benevolent,” and “with a sense of responsibility,” and then “technically skilled.” By analyzing the image of nurses in both newspapers over time, we found that images related to virtue have largely increased with time, while images about professionalism have decreased. Conclusion Nursing continues to be depicted as a virtuous caregiving profession, often forgetting the wide need for knowledge, skill, and expertise required in the occupation. The public image of nurses portrayed in the national newspapers does not accurately match their actual roles. Clinical Relevance The public image of nurses portrayed in the national newspapers does not accurately match their actual roles. To actualize a professional role and increase social status of nurses, intentional image management is needed. Nursing schools, nursing associations, and nursing professionals should be more proactive in overcoming the stereotypical image portrayed of them and use the news media as a tool to invite attention from and dialogue with the public about the value of nursing to reframe the public's understanding of the expert role of the professional nurse in health care and to create a new and more professional image for nursing.

Abstract:Abstract One hundred twenty weanling male albino rats (Sprague-Dawley) were employed in two 3×2 factorial experiments designed to compare effects of substituting α -lactose and β -lactose for the glucose component of diets containing either adequate or excess phosphorus. Rats receiving glucose had no diarrhea and gained faster than rats receiving lactose. Further, glucosefed rats had more carcass fat but less carcass water and calcium than lactose-fed rats. Pair-gain studies indicated that these carcass effects were independent of gain and final body weight. Rats fed lactose had much larger ceca than those fed glucose. Blood samples taken just prior to slaughter revealed higher hematocrits for rats receiving lactose than for those receiving glucose. α -Lactose effected a greater weight gain than β -lactose when fed with adequate phosphorus or with excess phosphorus as H 3 PO 4 . Conversely, with excess phosphorus as Na 2 HPO 4 , β -lactose supported a faster rate of gain than α -lactose. Excess phosphorus provided as H 3 PO 4 uniformly depressed rate and efficiency of gain.
Perception of care from the perspective of nursing students: A study using photovoice, storytelling and poetry

Abstract:Background: The Higher Education in Nursing requires providing students with skills such as critical and reflective thinking about the actions to be carried out so that they are capable of providing humanised and quality care in an increasingly complex and technified society. Participatory teaching methodologies promote the development of these skills. Objectives: to explore the potential of photovoice, storytelling and poetry as instruments capable of encouraging reflection. To identify through images (photovoice) and poetic narratives (storytelling and poetry) the perception that students of the nursing degree express about nursing care. Design: qualitative study in the framework of the socio-critical paradigm, using photovoice, storytelling and poetry in the field of care. Participants: first-year undergraduate nursing students at two Spanish universities in the academic year 2021-2022. Methodology: 48 images were shown and students were asked to select one, write a narrative and generate a short poem connected to the image. Subsequently, a content analysis was conducted of those poems evoked by the five photographs most chosen by the students. The analysis was supported by qualitative data analysis software. A total of 67 contributions from 67 students were analysed. Results: the concepts addressed in the poems and the compositions generated reveal how critical humanist thinking and reflection on the subject of care developed. The topics identified were care, accompaniment throughout the life cycle, working on the basis of values and caring for small details as subcategories of nursing care. Conclusion: The combination of different tools in university education has encouraged reflection and enabled students to identify for themselves the importance of humanised care. Working on the theoretical foundation in an active way can reduce the gap between theory and practice and foster the empowerment of the nursing identity.

Abstract:This study explores nursing students' perceptions of institutionalized elderly care, aiming to identify attitudes and biases that influence their academic and professional development in gerontological nursing. Conducted with 128 students across two campuses, this qualitative study utilized 15 focus groups for data collection. Five primary themes emerged through thematic and inductive analysis: Institutionalized Living, Stereotypes, Improvement Proposals, Exemplary Practices and Positive Observations and Educational Strategies and Person-centered Care Integration. Findings underscore the multifaceted nature of elderly long-term care settings, highlighting the prevalence of loneliness. Despite institutionalization's intent to mitigate loneliness, results suggest its effectiveness is variable, with a deficiency in social interaction opportunities. This underscores the imperative for comprehensive socialization programs. Additionally, integrating students into professional teams has been shown to foster positive interpersonal relationships significantly. Recommendations for enhancing care quality include personalizing living spaces, strengthening bonds between staff and residents, and enriching the nursing curriculum with advanced professional training.
An Overview of Family and Community Nurse Specialists' Employment Situation in Spain: A Qualitative Study

Abstract:Background: Family and Community Nurse specialists are advocates of a holistic model of care in multidisciplinary primary care teams. This study aims to describe the experiences and perceptions of nurses specialising in Family and Community Nursing regarding their working conditions in primary care in Spain. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Eighteen family and community specialist nurses from different autonomous communities in Spain participated. Individual interviews and a focus group were conducted. Results: The results identified two main themes: The current work situation of the Family and Community Nursing specialist and Support network and system of rejection with four sub-themes highlighting the lack of social and work recognition, the advantages of working with Family and Community Nursing specialists, systematic ambivalence towards Family and Community Nursing, and the need for institutional support. The inclusion of Family and Community Nursing specialists in primary care teams favours the nurse–patient bond, increases and/or maintains the quality of life of patients, and strengthens their empowerment; however, there is an absence of specific job vacancies. Conclusions: The institutional and social lack of awareness about the roles of Family and Community nurse practitioners and their impact on health care systems limits the quality of patient care in primary care.

Abstract:Resumen La escasez de enfermeras es un fenómeno multicausal que afecta a todos los países y actualmente es una preocupación mundial. La infradotación de enfermeras pone en riesgo la sostenibilidad de los sistemas sanitarios y los resultados de salud de las personas. En España, históricamente no ha habido dificultades para atraer a nuevas generaciones de enfermeras. El déficit de enfermeras en España se explica por unas condiciones laborales precarias y una falta de desarrollo profesional que han provocado episodios de elevada migración internacional y abandono de la profesión. En este artículo se pone el foco en la evolución de diferentes indicadores de condiciones laborales de las enfermeras no especializadas, que son el grueso de la profesión. Estos indicadores permiten analizar el abandono de la profesión, la duración de los contratos, la dedicación a tiempo parcial o completa, y el abuso en la sobrecontratación. Se analizan los efectos de la COVID-19 y de la reforma laboral sobre estos indicadores. La COVID-19 redujo el abandono de la profesión y actualmente está en su cota más baja, y ha acelerado la necesidad de mejorar las condiciones laborales aumentando el porcentaje de contratos indefinidos y reduciendo la multiplicidad de contratos en un mismo mes. La reforma laboral ha ayudado a reducir el porcentaje de contratos temporales hasta situarse alrededor del 80% del total de los contratos, y ha reducido el número de enfermeras en España con más de un contrato en un mismo mes hasta situarse por debajo de las 3000 enfermeras de manera mantenida. The nursing shortage is a multi-causal phenomenon that affects all countries and currently a global concern. The shortage of nurses jeopardizes the sustainability of health systems and the population health outcomes. Spain has historically had no difficulties in attracting new generations of nurses. The shortage of nurses is caused by the precarious working conditions and lack of professional development that have led to episodes of high international migration and abandonment of the profession. In this paper we focus on the evolution of different indicators of the working conditions of non-specialist nurses, who make up the bulk of the profession. These indicators allow us to analyse the abandonment of the profession, the duration of contracts, their full-time or part-time dedication and the excessive hiring. We have analysed the effect of COVID-19 and the labour reform on these indicators. COVID-19 reduced the abandonment of the profession and is currently at its lowest level, it has also accelerated the need to improve working conditions by increasing the percentage of permanent contracts and reducing the multiplicity of contracts in the same month. The labour reform has helped reduce the percentage of temporary contracts until reaching around 80% of the total contracts, and has reduced the number of nurses in Spain with more than one contract in the same month to below 3000 nurses on a sustained basis.
