Abstract:Epilepsy is a disease in which patients undergo seizures caused by brain functionality disorder. Clinically, it is usually diagnosed by experienced clinicians according to continuous electroencephalography (cEEG), which is time consuming even for experienced doctors. Meanwhile, amplitude integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) has shown potential to detect epileptic seizures. Therefore, the paper proposes a hybrid seizure detection algorithm by combining cEEG-based seizure detection algorithm and aEEG-based seizure detection algorithm to detect seizures. In cEEG-based seizure detection algorithm, cEEG signals are divided into 5 s epoch with 4 s overlap and multi-domain features are extracted from each epoch. Then random forest classification is applied to do seizure detection. In aEEG-based seizure detection algorithm, morphological filter is applied to do spike detection and determine whether there are seizures after transforming the cEEG signals into aEEG signals. In order to evaluate the generality of the proposed method, experiments are performed on two independent datasets, including a publicly available EEG dataset (CHB-MIT) and an epileptic dataset collected by using the EEG device developed by the Hangzhou Neuro Science and Technology Co., Ltd. In the CHB-MIT dataset, the accuracy (AC), specificity (SP), sensitivity based on the event (SE), and false positive ratio based on the event (FPRE) obtained by the hybrid method are 99.36%, 82.98%, 99.41%, and 0.57 times/h, respectively. In the dataset we collected, the AC, SP, SE, and FPRE obtained by the hybrid method are 99.23%, 89.47%, 99.23%, and 0.71 times/h, respectively. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is competitive with state-of-the-art methods and results. Furthermore, basing on the hybrid method, this paper has developed a portable automatic seizure detection system, which can reduce the burden of clinicians in processing the large amounts of cEEG signals by detecting seizure automatically.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a neurological condition such that it affects the brain and the nervous system. It is characterized by recurrent seizures, which are physical reactions to sudden, usually brief, excessive electrical discharges in a group of brain cells. Hence, seizure identification has great importance in clinical therapy of epileptic patients. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is one of the main biomarker that can measure voltage fluctuations of the brain and EEG data analysis helps to investigate the patient with epilepsy syndrome as epilepsy leaves their signature in EEG signals. In this paper, the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is applied to EEG signals to pre-processing, decompose it till the 4th level of decomposition tree.Various features like Entropy, Min, Max, Mean, Median, Standard deviation, Variance, Skewness, Energy and Relative Wave Energy (RWE) were computed in terms of detailed coefficients and the approximation coefficients of the last decomposition level.Then, the extracted features are evaluated by three modern machine-learning classifiers such as Radial Basis Function based Support Vector Machine (SVMRBF), k-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Naive Bayes (NB). The experimental results demonstrate that the highest classification accuracy (100\%) for normal subject data versus epileptic data is obtained by SVMRBF. the corresponding accuracy between normal subject data and epileptic data using KNN and NB is obtained as 99.50\% and 99\% for the eyes open and eyes closed conditions, respectively. The similar accuracies, while comparing the interictal and ictal data, are obtained as 99\%, 97.50\% and 98.50\% using the SVMRBF, KNN and NB classifiers, respectively. These accuracies are quite higher than earlier results published.
Automated diagnosis of EEG abnormalities with different classification techniques

Abstract:Automatic seizure detection and prediction using clinical Electroencephalograms (EEGs) are challenging tasks due to factors such as low Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs), high variance in epileptic seizures among patients, and limited clinical data constraints. To overcome these challenges, this paper presents two approaches for EEG signal classification. One of these approaches depends on Machine Learning (ML) tools. The used features are different types of entropy, higher-order statistics, and sub-band energies in the Hilbert Marginal Spectrum (HMS) domain. The classification is performed using Support Vector Machine (SVM), Logistic Regression (LR), and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) classifiers. Both seizure detection and prediction scenarios are considered. The second approach depends on spectrograms of EEG signal segments and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based residual learning model. We use 10000 spectrogram images for each class. In this approach, it is possible to perform both seizure detection and prediction in addition to a 3-state classification scenario. Both approaches are evaluated on the Children's Hospital Boston and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (CHB-MIT) dataset, which contains 24 EEG recordings for 6 males and 18 females. The results obtained for the HMS-based model showed an accuracy of 100%. The CNN-based model achieved accuracies of 97.66%, 95.59%, and 94.51% for Seizure (S) versus Pre-Seizure (PS), Non-Seizure (NS) versus S, and NS versus S versus PS classes, respectively. These results demonstrate that the proposed approaches can be effectively used for seizure detection and prediction. Abstract:Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in the activity of brain cells that leads to seizures. An electroencephalogram (EEG) can detect seizures as it contains physiological information of the neural activity of the brain. However, visual examination of EEG by experts is time consuming, and their diagnoses may even contradict each other. Thus, an automated computer-aided diagnosis for EEG diagnostics is necessary. Therefore, this paper proposes an effective approach for the early detection of epilepsy. The proposed approach involves the extraction of important features and classification. First, signal components are decomposed to extract the features via the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) method. Principal component analysis (PCA) and the t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) algorithm were applied to reduce the dimensions and focus on the most important features. Subsequently, K-means clustering + PCA and K-means clustering + t-SNE were used to divide the dataset into subgroups to reduce the dimensions and focus on the most important representative features of epilepsy. The features extracted from these steps were fed to extreme gradient boosting, K-nearest neighbors (K-NN), decision tree (DT), random forest (RF) and multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifiers. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed approach provides superior results to those of existing studies. During the testing phase, the RF classifier with DWT and PCA achieved an accuracy of 97.96%, precision of 99.1%, recall of 94.41% and F1 score of 97.41%. Moreover, the RF classifier with DWT and t-SNE attained an accuracy of 98.09%, precision of 99.1%, recall of 93.9% and F1 score of 96.21%. In comparison, the MLP classifier with PCA + K-means reached an accuracy of 98.98%, precision of 99.16%, recall of 95.69% and F1 score of 97.4%.

Abstract:EEG is commonly used to accommodate information about the electrical activity of the brain, an automated epilepsy seizure detection and prediction technique. As the rapid innovation in the field of healthcare increases, various biomedical signals namely, electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), and electromyogram (EMG) play a crucial role in the measurement of various diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and brain disorders. Also, detection of epilepsy by an expert mainly neurologists, from EEG requires a lot of time as large amount of data is generated by the signals. We processed EEG database of CHB-MIT (scalp EEG), to find if our model could outperform the state-of-the-art models. The present study is mainly composed of four parts. In the first part, multiscale principal component analysis has been applied for EEG de-noising. In the second part, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is used to decompose EEG signal into a set of amplitude modulated and frequency modulated components. In the third part, features such as standard deviation, kurtosis, skewness, mean, power of coefficients, ratio of power of coefficients have been extracted from various mode functions and these six features have been categorized into three subsets. In the last stage, these subset of features are employed as inputs to 10 machine learning classifier for classification between non-seizure and seizure EEG signals. The simulation results show that our model achieved an accuracy of 70.30% for KNN, 95.47% for Random Forest, 92.56% for Decision Trees, 91.22% for Support Vector Machine, 84.12% for Multilayer Perceptron, 84.12% for Naive Bayes, and 88.92% for Ensemble Classifiers. Our model achieved maximum accuracy of 95.47% and sensitivity of 96.34% for Random Forest in ictal versus inter-ictal EEG for CHB-MIT database which is better when compared to existing state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:This study proposes a new model which is fully specified for automated seizure onset detection and seizure onset prediction based on electroencephalography (EEG) measurements. We processed two archetypal EEG databases, Freiburg (intracranial EEG) and CHB-MIT (scalp EEG), to find if our model could outperform the state-of-the art models. Four key components define our model: (1) multiscale principal component analysis for EEG de-noising, (2) EEG signal decomposition using either empirical mode decomposition, discrete wavelet transform or wavelet packet decomposition, (3) statistical measures to extract relevant features, (4) machine learning algorithms. Our model achieved overall accuracy of 100% in ictal vs. inter-ictal EEG for both databases. In seizure onset prediction, it could discriminate between inter-ictal, pre-ictal, and ictal EEG with the accuracy of 99.77%, and between inter-ictal and pre-ictal EEG states with the accuracy of 99.70%. The proposed model is general and should prove applicable to other classification tasks including detection and prediction regarding bio-signals such as EMG and ECG.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that involves abnormal electrical signal patterns of the brain called seizures. The brain’s electrical signals can be recorded using an electroencephalogram (EEG). EEG recordings can be used to monitor complex and non-stationary signals produced by the brain for detecting epilepsy seizures. Machine learning (ML) methods have been successfully applied in different domains to accurately classify the patterns based upon dataset features. However, ML methods are unable to analyze the raw EEG signals. Appropriate features must be extracted from EEG recordings for detecting epilepsy seizures using signal processing methods. This work proposes an intelligent system by integrating variational mode decomposition (VMD) and Hilbert transform (HT) method for extracting useful features from EEG signals and stacked neural network (NN) method for detecting epilepsy seizures. VMD method decomposers EEG signals into intrinsic mode functions, followed by the HT method for extracting features from EEG signals. The stacked-NN approach is applied for detecting epilepsy seizures using extracted features. The performance of the proposed system is validated using benchmark datasets for epilepsy seizure detection provided by Bonn University and, Neurology and Sleep Centre, New Delhi (NSC-ND). The performance of the proposed system is compared with other ML methods and state of the art approaches in the field. The reported results demonstrate that the proposed system can detect up to 100% accurate epilepsy seizures using NSC-ND data set and up to 99% accurate epilepsy seizures using Bonn university dataset. The comparative results also demonstrate the better performance of the proposed system over other ML methods and existing approaches for detecting epilepsy seizures. The remarkable performance of the proposed system can help neurological experts to detect epilepsy seizures accurately using EEG signals and can be embedded into the real-time diagnosis of the disease.

Abstract:Epileptic patients suffer from an epileptic brain seizure caused by the temporary and unpredicted electrical interruption. Conventionally, the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals are manually studied by medical practitioners as it records the electrical activities from the brain. This technique consumes a lot of time, and the outputs are unreliable. In a bid to address this problem, a new structure for detecting an epileptic seizure is proposed in this study. The EEG signals obtained from the University of Bonn, Germany, and real-time medical records from the Senthil Multispecialty Hospital, India, were used. These signals were disintegrated into six frequency subbands that employed discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and extracted twelve statistical functions. In particular, seven best features were identified and further fed into k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN), naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Decision Tree classifiers for two-type and three-type classifications. Six statistical parameters were employed to measure the performance of these classifications. It has been found that different combinations of features and classifiers produce different results. Overall, the study is a first attempt to find the best combination feature set and classifier for 16 different 2-class and 3-class classification challenges of the Bonn and Senthil real-time clinical dataset.

Abstract:Epilepsy is one of the most common complex brain disorders which is a chronic non-communicable disease caused by paroxysmal abnormal super-synchronous electrical activity of brain neurons. This paper proposed an electroencephalogram (EEG) based real-time approach to detect epilepsy seizures. Discrete wavelet transform and eight eigenvalues’ algorithms are applied to extract features in different sub-frequency bands. Then support vector machine is employed for three-classes classification of health control, seizure free and seizure active, and finally RUSBoosted tree Ensemble method is used for real-time seizure onset detection. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using two public datasets: one short-term dataset named UB and one long-term dataset named CHB-MIT. The results show that the algorithm achieves 97% accuracy and 96.67% sensitivity in the three-classes classification of health control, seizure-free and seizure-active groups in UB dataset, and 96.38% accuracy, 96.15% sensitivity, 3.24% false positive rate for the real time seizure onset detection in CHB-MIT Dataset.

Abstract:<p>Epileptic seizure onset detection in electroencephalography (EEG) signals is a challenging task due to the severe variation of seizures. Recently, automatic seizure onset detection frameworks fail to fully consider both nonstationary and stochastic characteristics of EEGs in nature, which may lead to information default and further produce suboptimal recognition performance consequently. In this work, we propose a patient-specific seizure onset detection method based on fully exploration of auxiliary supplementary spectral-temporal information in EEG signals. Specifically, prior to feature extraction procedure, EEG signals are firstly decomposed into 5 groups of coefficients at different levels based on the clinical interest. Representative feature in temporal-domain, which is a translation of the nonlinear property of EEG signals, is then extracted by a combination of principal component analysis and common spatial pattern (PCA-CSP) and multivariate multiscale sample entropy (MMSE) in parallel and dimensionally reduced by a tree-based feature selection algorithm. Supplementary information in spectral-domain is further explored by the proposed unified maximum mean discrepancy autoencoder (uMMD-AE). Finally, an optimal combination of features above is identified and fed into a series of support vector machine classifiers with a decision fusion module for the intelligent recognition of epileptic EEGs. The proposed method achieves an average sensitivity, latency and false detection rate of 97.2%, 1.10s and 0.64/h respectively on Children Hospital Boston-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (CHB-MIT) Scalp EEG Database. Competitive experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed unified multi-level spectral-temporal feature learning framework in epileptic EEG recognition, validating its effectiveness in the automatic patient-specific seizure onset detection.</p>

Abstract:Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder affecting millions worldwide, characterized by abnormal brain activity that can lead to seizures, unusual behavior, and sometimes loss of consciousness. This condition significantly impacts patients' daily lives, necessitating strict precautions, especially when performing activities such as driving or operating heavy machinery. Electroencephalography (EEG) remains the primary method for monitoring brain activity and detecting seizures in epilepsy patients. However, the manual analysis of EEG signals is a complex, time-consuming task, often leading to high false-positive rates and inconsistencies, even among experienced neuro-technologists. To overcome these limitations, this study investigates the use of advanced deep learning techniques for the automatic detection of epileptic seizures from EEG signals. The research proposes and evaluates five deep learning models: 1D-CNN, VGGNet, ResNet, Xception, and WaveNet. These models were selected for their potential to extract and analyze critical features in EEG data, thereby enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of seizure detection. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed models achieve high levels of accuracy, with 1D-CNN at 98.18%, VGGNet at 97.48%, Xception at 97.93%, ResNet at 97.69%, and WaveNet at 98.14%. These findings highlight the potential of deep learning to significantly improve the detection and diagnosis of epileptic seizures, enabling timely medical intervention and reducing the risks associated with this condition.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a brain disorder characterized by sudden seizures, periodic abnormal and inappropriate behaviour, and an altered state of consciousness. The visual diagnosis of epilepsy using electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is challenging, which led to the development of machine learning methods to automate this task. With the help of machine learning techniques optimized for epilepsy, this study aims to diagnose epilepsy disorders and related seizures with high accuracy. In the first step, the proposed multilevel method applies Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to decompose the EEG signal into sub-band frequency levels. Next, the algorithm uses the Modified Binary Salp Swarm Algorithm (MBSSA), a population-based strategy, to extract time-domain features. The proposed method uses the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) backpropagation classification model as a Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN). The MBSSA also optimally determine the type of WT (DWT or Double Density DWT (DDT)), the number of decomposed levels in WT, the best-fitted mother wavelet and the number of neurons in the hidden layer of FFNN, preventing manual and time-consuming calculation. Evaluation procedures compare the proposed method to other state-of-the-art methods and verify its superiority by achieving the highest and average accuracy of %99.45 and %98.46, respectively.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a life-threatening neurological condition. Manual detection of epileptic seizures (ES) is laborious and burdensome. Machine learning techniques applied to electroencephalography (EEG) signals are widely used for automatic seizure detection. Some key factors are worth considering for the real-world applicability of such systems: (i) continuous EEG data typically has a higher class imbalance; (ii) higher variability across subjects is present in physiological signals such as EEG; and (iii) seizure event detection is more practical than random segment detection. Most prior studies failed to address these crucial factors altogether for seizure detection. In this study, we intend to investigate a generalized cross-subject seizure event detection system using the continuous EEG signals from the CHB-MIT dataset that considers all these overlooked aspects. A 5-second non-overlapping window is used to extract 92 features from 22 EEG channels; however, the most significant 32 features from each channel are used in experimentation. Seizure classification is done using a Random Forest (RF) classifier for segment detection, followed by a post-processing method used for event detection. Adopting all the above-mentioned essential aspects, the proposed event detection system achieved 72.63% and 75.34% sensitivity for subject-wise 5-fold and leave-one-out analyses, respectively. This study presents the real-world scenario for ES event detectors and furthers the understanding of such detection systems.

Abstract:An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a non-invasive exam that records the brain's electrical activity. This is used to help diagnose conditions such as different brain problems. EEG signals are taken for epilepsy detection, and with Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and machine learning classifier, they perform epilepsy detection. In Epilepsy seizure detection, machine learning classifiers and statistical features are mainly used. The hidden information in the EEG signal helps detect diseases affecting the brain. Sometimes it is complicated to identify the minimum changes in the EEG in the time and frequency domain's purpose. The DWT can give a suitable decomposition of the signals in different frequency bands and feature extraction. We use the tri-dimensionality reduction algorithm, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Finally, features are selected by using a fusion rule and at the last step, three different classifiers, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naive Bayes (NB), and K-Nearest-Neighbor (KNN) have been used individually for the classification. The proposed framework is tested on the Bonn dataset. The simulation results provide 100% accuracy for the LDA and NB combination outperforming accuracy with other classifiers combinations, including 89.17% for LDA and SVM, 80.42% for LDA and KNN, 89.92% for PCA and NB, 85.58% PCA and SVM, 80.42% PCA and KNN, 82.33% for ICA and NB, 90.42% for ICA and SVM, 90% for ICA and KNN. Also, the LDA and NB combination shows the sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, Precision, and Recall of 100%, 100%, 100%, 100%, and 100%. The results prove the effectiveness of this model.

This approach combines the maximum cross-correlation, the robust-principal component analysis (RPCA) and the least square-support vector machine (LS-SVM) to detect the events. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method provides higher detection sensitivity, specificity and accuracy compared with the state-of-the art approaches based on EEG signals of 37 absence epilepsy patients with a total of 57 seizure events.

Abstract:Automatic seizure detection using electroen-cephalogram (EEG) can significantly expedite the diagnosis of epilepsy, thereby facilitating prompt treatment and reducing the risk of future seizures and associated complications. While most existing EEG-based epilepsy detection studies employ deep learning models, they often ignore the chronological relationships between different EEG channels. To tackle this limitation, a novel automatic epilepsy detection method is proposed, which leverages path signature and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) neural network with an attention mechanism. The path signature algorithm is used to extract discriminative features for capturing the dynamic dependencies between different channels of EEG, while Bi-LSTM with attention further analyzes the inherent temporal dependencies hidden in EEG signal features. Our method is evaluated on two public EEG databases with different sizes (CHB-MIT and TUEP) and a private database from a local hospital. Two experimental settings are used, i.e., five-fold cross-validation and leave-one-out cross-validation. Experimental results show that our method achieves 99.09%, 95.60%, and 99.87% average accuracies on CHB-MIT, TUEP with 250Hz, and TUEP with 256Hz, respectively. On the private dataset, our method also achieves 99.40% average accuracy, which outperforms other methods. Furthermore, our method exhibits robustness in patients, as demonstrated by the evaluation results of cross-patient experiments.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a psychosocial neurological disorder, which emerges as a major threat to public health. In this age of the internet of things, the smart diagnosis of epilepsy has gained huge research attention with machine learning-based seizure detection in cloud-fog assisted environments. The present paper also proposes a cloud-fog integrated smart neurocare approach, which performs a temporal analysis of raw electroencephalogram (EEG) signals using deep learning to detect the occurrence of epileptic seizures. This patient-independent approach makes use of single-channel EEG signals to achieve real-time and computationally efficient seizure detection at fog layer devices. It employs a maximum variance-based channel selection procedure to select only one channel of raw scalp EEG signals, followed by their filtering and segmentation into various short-duration temporal segments. To analyse EEG patterns, these segments are further fed to the proposed models of convolutional neural network, recurrent neural network and stacked autoencoder deep learning classifiers. The performance analysis through simulation results evidently reveals that the proposed convolutional neural network-based temporal analysis approach performs better than other approaches. It realises an optimum accuracy of 96.43%, sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 93.33% for 30s duration EEG segments of CHB-MIT dataset and achieves 100% accuracy, sensitivity and specificity values for EEG segments of Bonn dataset for 23.6s EEG segments. Thus, the proposed convolutional neural network-based approach emerges as an appropriate method for rapid and accurate detection of epileptic seizures in fog-cloud integrated environment.

Abstract:Automatic seizure detection is of great significance for epilepsy diagnosis and alleviating the massive burden caused by manual inspection of long-term EEG. At present, most seizure detection methods are highly patient-dependent and have poor generalization performance. In this study, a novel patient-independent approach is proposed to effectively detect seizure onsets. First, the multi-channel EEG recordings are preprocessed by wavelet decomposition. Then, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with proper depth works as an EEG feature extractor. Next, the obtained features are fed into a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network to further capture the temporal variation characteristics. Finally, aiming to reduce the false detection rate (FDR) and improve the sensitivity, the postprocessing, including smoothing and collar, is performed on the outputs of the model. During the training stage, a novel channel perturbation technique is introduced to enhance the model generalization ability. The proposed approach is comprehensively evaluated on the CHB-MIT public scalp EEG database as well as a more challenging SH-SDU scalp EEG database we collected. Segment-based average accuracies of 97.51% and 93.70%, event-based average sensitivities of 86.51% and 89.89%, and average AUC-ROC of 90.82% and 90.75% are yielded on the CHB-MIT database and SH-SDU database, respectively.

Abstract:Epileptic seizures have a significant impact on the well-being of a large number of individuals worldwide. Utilizing electroencephalographic (EEG) signals for automatic seizure detection proves to be a valuable solution. However, dealing with raw EEG signals is inherently complex, necessitating a preliminary step of feature extraction prior to detection. Traditional feature extraction methods often amalgamate various types of features for seizure detection, as each type typically captures specific properties. In contrast, this paper focuses on detecting seizures by analyzing the system dynamics. The proposed Deterministic Learning Feature Extraction (DLFE) method extracts a single type of nonlinear dynamical feature rooted in the EEG system dynamics. DLFE employs deterministic learning to discern the inherent system dynamics of the EEG under both seizure and normal conditions. Through the feature extraction process, the infinite-dimensional system dynamics are transformed into feature vectors, exhibiting distinct distributions in seizure and normal states. This disparity can be effectively utilized for classification using standard classifiers. The performance of the proposed seizure detection method was assessed using the CHB-MIT and Bonn datasets. The average classification accuracy was found to be 98.63% with a specificity of 99.19% and a sensitivity of 98.06% on CHB-MIT dataset. Compared with the latest similar methods, the accuracy, specificity and sensitivity are improved by 0.31%, 0.21% and 0.05% respectively. Moreover, the performance was achieved with the short-time interval EEG signals within a few channels. The average classification accuracy was found to be 99.90% with a 0.22% improvement on Bonn dataset, which indicates the good generalization performance.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a highly prevalent brain condition with many serious complications arising from it. The majority of patients which present to a clinic and undergo electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring would be unlikely to experience seizures during the examination period, thus the presence of interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) become effective markers for the diagnosis of epilepsy. Furthermore, IED shapes and patterns are highly variable across individuals, yet trained experts are still able to identify them through EEG recordings - meaning that commonalities exist across IEDs that an algorithm can be trained on to detect and generalise to the larger population. This research proposes an IED detection system for the binary classification of epilepsy using scalp EEG recordings. The proposed system features an ensemble based deep learning method to boost the performance of a residual convolutional neural network, and a bidirectional long short-term memory network. This is implemented using raw EEG data, sourced from Temple University Hospital's EEG Epilepsy Corpus, and is found to outperform the current state of the art model for IED detection across the same dataset. The achieved accuracy and Area Under Curve (AUC) of 94.92% and 97.45% demonstrates the effectiveness of an ensemble method, and that IED detection can be achieved with high performance using raw scalp EEG data, thus showing promise for the proposed approach in clinical settings.
