Abstract:Remotely sensed and accurate daily mean land surface temperature (Tdm) is valuable for various applications such as air temperature estimation and climate change monitoring. However, most traditional methods employed by the remote sensing community estimate Tdm by averaging the – usually few – observed cloud-free land surface temperatures (LSTs). Such estimates can have large sampling bias, especially for tandem polar orbiters, due to their sparse sampling of diurnal LST dynamics and the unavailability of under-cloud LSTs. To estimate accurate Tdm based on thermal observations from tandem polar orbiters, here we propose a simple yet robust framework that combines the annual temperature cycle (ATC) and the diurnal temperature cycle (DTC) models (termed the ADTC-based framework). The ATC model is used to reconstruct daily instantaneous under-cloud LSTs, based on which the DTC model is employed to establish diurnally continuous LST dynamics for estimating Tdm. The proposed framework is validated with geostationary LST observations and in-situ thermal measurements under both cloud-free and overcast conditions. The validations show that, under cloud-free conditions, the ADTC-based framework is able to reduce the positive sampling bias obtained with simple averaging (> 2.0 K) and yields a mean absolute error (MAE) of approximately 0.5 K. Under overcast conditions, the ADTC-based framework yields MAEs of 1.0 K and 0.5 K at the daily and monthly scales, respectively. Furthermore, a contribution analysis indicates that the ATC model reduces the MAE from around 4.2 K to 2.0 K while the DTC model reduces the MAE from around 2.0 K to 1.0 K. Based on our validation results and tests performed with MODIS data, the presented simple yet robust ADTC-based framework is able to accurately estimate large-scale spatiotemporally continuous Tdm from thermal observations of tandem polar orbiters. Therefore, the ADTC-based framework is a potentially valuable tool for many related applications.

Abstract:Thermal infrared land surface temperature (LST) data from satellites often contain extensive missing values due to high cloudiness degree, which severely hinders their use in applications. Despite the many methods developed, common methods, such as fusion with microwave or reanalysis data and the surface energy budget approach, still remain subject to important limitations and uncertainties, such as dependency on coarse resolution data and difficulty in interpolation for large-scale missing LST data. In this study, we proposed a stepwise framework for estimating missing cloudy-sky LST values of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) from informative samples owing to the solar-cloud-satellite geometry (SCSG) effect, by which satellite imagery records the cloudy-sky LST values of a portion of pixels. We first estimated the clear-sky LST equivalents for all cloud-affected pixels via a similarity-based approach and then determined unknown LSTs for cloudy pixels by training a machine-learning model on cloudy-sky LST values observed owing to the SCSG effect. We demonstrated the utility of this approach by using MODIS/Aqua daytime LST data over Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and validated the interpolation results against representative in-situ LST observations and two recently published all-weather LST datasets. When compared to the corresponding in-situ measurements, the interpolated cloudy-sky LST values showed satisfactory accuracy with a mean absolute error (MAE) value of 3.99 °C and a coefficient of determination ( R 2 ) value of 0.74, while the MODIS/Aqua clear-sky LST values led to an MAE value of 2.66 °C and an R 2 value of 0.86. Compared to the two all-weather LST datasets, results of this study showed the highest accuracy over the data-gap-filled regions in terms of all quantitative performance metrics, more natural transition textures, and better representation of seasonal characteristics. The proposed framework has the advantage of relying on the MODIS family data and handling extensive missing data as well as triggers opportunities to leverage the SCSG effect to produce high-quality all-weather LST data.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is a crucial biophysical parameter related closely to the land–atmosphere interface. Satellite thermal infrared measurement provides an effective method to derive LST on regional and global scales, but it is very hard to acquire simultaneously high spatiotemporal resolution LST due to its limitation in the sensor design. Recently, many LST downscaling and spatiotemporal image fusion methods have been widely proposed to solve this problem. However, most methods ignored the spatial heterogeneity of LST distribution, and there are inconsistent image textures and LST values over heterogeneous regions. Thus, this study aims to propose one framework to derive high spatiotemporal resolution LSTs in heterogeneous areas by considering the optimal selection of LST predictors, the downscaling of MODIS LST, and the spatiotemporal fusion of Landsat 8 LST. A total of eight periods of MODIS and Landsat 8 data were used to predict the 100-m resolution LST at prediction time tp in Zhangye and Beijing of China. Further, the predicted LST at tp was quantitatively contrasted with the LSTs predicted by the regression-then-fusion strategy, STARFM-based fusion, and random forest-based regression, and was validated with the actual Landsat 8 LST product at tp. Results indicated that the proposed framework performed better in characterizing LST texture than the referenced three methods, and the root mean square error (RMSE) varied from 0.85 K to 2.29 K, and relative RMSE varied from 0.18 K to 0.69 K, where the correlation coefficients were all greater than 0.84. Furthermore, the distribution error analysis indicated the proposed new framework generated the most area proportion at 0~1 K in some heterogeneous regions, especially in artificial impermeable surfaces and bare lands. This means that this framework can provide a set of LST dataset with reasonable accuracy and a high spatiotemporal resolution over heterogeneous areas.

Abstract:Because of the primary role of land surface temperature (LST) in the physical processes of surface energy balance (SEB) at local through global scales, dynamic, continuous, and seamless LST monitoring is constantly in urgent need. Thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing serves as the most commonly used sources for LST retrieval owing to its relatively fine spatial-temporal resolution and presentable accuracy. However, limited by the inability to penetrate clouds, original TIR LST data suffers significantly from data missing problems. Furthermore, the view time of pixels along the scan line differs significantly for polar orbiting satellites, exerting appreciable influence on the subsequent data applications. To cope with the above setbacks simultaneously, we proposed a practical reconstruction framework based on the inner physical connection between LST and solar radiation, which was accurately expressed by random forest regression (RFR) model, with the consideration of various auxiliary environmental factors (i.e., elevation, slope, longitude, latitude, and surface reflectance). Taking the Tibetan Plateau (TP) as the study area, the proposed method was applied to generate spatially seamless and time-consistent LST products with the use of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra daytime LST product. From visual assessment, the reconstructed product exhibits ideal spatial-temporal continuity within the TP. Through the validation with in situ observations from five different stations, the results show a higher consistency with ground measurements than the LST product from the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) and other all-weather LST product, with an average improvement on RMSE of 1.06 and 1.59 K under clear conditions, and 1.86 and 2.72 K under cloudy conditions. The validation demonstrates that the proposed method is well applicable for all-weather LST reconstruction over a large-scale area with significant surface heterogeneity, which also shows good ability to remove the temporal inconsistency induced by satellite observations. Additionally, it can be reliably generalized to different areas with similar data requirements for its sufficient effectiveness and flexibility.

A Data Fusion Modeling Framework for Retrieval of Land Surface Temperature from Landsat-8 and MODIS Data

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is a critical state variable of land surface energy equilibrium and a key indicator of environmental change such as climate change, urban heat island, and freezing-thawing hazard. The high spatial and temporal resolution datasets are urgently needed for a variety of environmental change studies, especially in remote areas with few LST observation stations. MODIS and Landsat satellites have complementary characteristics in terms of spatial and temporal resolution for LST retrieval. To make full use of their respective advantages, this paper developed a pixel-based multi-spatial resolution adaptive fusion modeling framework (called pMSRAFM). As an instance of this framework, the data fusion model for joint retrieval of LST from Landsat-8 and MODIS data was implemented to generate the synthetic LST with Landsat-like spatial resolution and MODIS temporal information. The performance of pMSRAFM was tested and validated in the Heihe River Basin located in China. The results of six experiments showed that the fused LST was high similarity to the direct Landsat-derived LST with structural similarity index (SSIM) of 0.83 and the index of agreement (d) of 0.84. The range of SSIM was 0.65–0.88, the root mean square error (RMSE) yielded a range of 1.6–3.4 °C, and the averaged bias was 0.6 °C. Furthermore, the temporal information of MODIS LST was retained and optimized in the synthetic LST. The RMSE ranged from 0.7 °C to 1.5 °C with an average value of 1.1 °C. When compared with in situ LST observations, the mean absolute error and bias were reduced after fusion with the mean absolute bias of 1.3 °C. The validation results that fused LST possesses the spatial pattern of Landsat-derived LSTs and inherits most of the temporal properties of MODIS LSTs at the same time, so it can provide more accurate and credible information. Consequently, pMSRAFM can be served as a promising and practical fusion framework to prepare a high-quality LST spatiotemporal dataset for various applications in environment studies.

A New Framework for the Reconstruction of Daily 1 Km Land Surface Temperatures from 2000 to 2022

Abstract:Accurate, seamless, and long-term land surface temperature (LST) data sets are crucial for investigating climate change and agriculture production. However, factors like cloud contamination have led to invalid values in the LST product, which has restricted the application of the LST dataset. Therefore, the reconstruction of LST products is challenging, and it is attracting widespread attention. This study compared the performance of different algorithms (XGBoost, GBDT, RF, POLY, MLR) and different training sets (using only good-quality pixels or using both good-quality and other-quality pixels) in the estimation of missing pixels in the LST data, obtaining a seamless daily 1 km LST dataset of MODIS Terra-day, Aqua-day, Terra-night, and Aqua-night data for Zhejiang Province and its surrounding areas from 2000 to 2022. The results demonstrated that the performance of machine-learning models is significantly better than that of linear models, and among the five models, XGBoost performed the best, with an RMSE of less than 1 °C. The Wilcoxon test between the reconstructed LST and the true LST values revealed that including both good-quality and other-quality pixels for reconstruction resulted in a 33% increase in the number of days with non-significant differences compared with using only good-quality pixels. Moreover, the reconstructed nighttime LST has a lower RMSE compared with the reconstructed daytime LST, and the RMSE of the reconstructed LST on the Terra satellite is lower than the RMSE of the reconstructed LST on the Aqua satellite. The RMSEs for the reconstructed LSTs are 0.50 °C, 0.61 °C, 0.36 °C, and 0.39 °C, corresponding to Terra-day, Aqua-day, Terra-night, and Aqua-night for images with coverage reaching 70%, 0.65 °C, 0.83 °C, 0.49 °C, respectively, and 0.52 °C for images with coverage less than 70%. The accuracy of the reconstructed LSTs using our proposed framework outperforms the existing reconstruction methods. The 1 km daily seamless LST products can be applied in various fields, such as air temperature estimation, climate change, urban heat island, and crop temperature stress monitoring.

Abstract:The estimation of spatially resolved near-surface air temperature (NSAT) has been extensively performed in previous studies using satellite-derived land surface temperature (LST) from MODIS. However, there remains a need for estimating daily NSAT based on LST data from other satellites, which has important implications for integrating multi-source LST in estimating NSAT and ensuring the continuity of satellite-derived estimates of NSAT over long-term periods. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive comparison of LST derived from Metop with MODIS LST in the modeling and mapping of daily NSAT. The results show that Metop LST achieves consistent predictive performance with MODIS LST in estimating daily NSAT, and models based on Metop LST or MODIS LST have overall predictive performance of about 1.2–1.4 K, 1.5–2.0 K, and 1.8–1.9 K in RMSE for estimating Tavg, Tmax, and Tmin, respectively. Compared to models based on nighttime LST, daytime LST can improve the predictive performance of Tmax by about 0.26–0.28 K, while performance for estimating Tavg or Tmin using different schemes of LST is comparable. Models based on Metop LST also exhibit high consistency with models utilizing MODIS LST in terms of the variability in predictive performance across months, with RMSE of 1.03–1.82 K, 1.3–2.49 K, and 1.26–2.66 K for Tavg, Tmin, and Tmax, respectively. This temporal variability in performance is not due to sampling imbalance across months, which is confirmed by comparing models trained using bootstrapped samples in balance, and our results imply that sampling representativeness, complicated by retrieval gaps in LST, is an important issue when analyzing the variability in predictive performance for estimating NSAT. To fully assess the predictive capability of Metop LST in estimating daily NSAT, more studies need to be performed using different methods across areas with a range of scales and geographical environments.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is a crucial parameter in the study of land surface processes. Currently, there are great progresses in LST retrieval based on thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing. However, TIR-based LST suffers from serious spatial discontinuities due to clouds. Although there are methods developed to address this issue, the methods show high uncertainty in days with extremely clouds. Therefore, this study proposed an integrated method to reconstruct cloudy LSTs using Terra/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the China land data assimilation system (CLDAS) LST. This method was separated into two parts according to the ratio of clear-sky pixels (RCP). On days with RCP more than 30%, a random forest reconstruction method was used to establish the complicated relationship between LST and its predicting variables, including solar radiation factor, vegetation index, water index, topographic information, and latitude, and then applied to cloudy pixels to derive LSTs. For the rest days, the CLDAS LST was selected to assist the reconstruction via downscaling it to 1 km and then merged with clear-sky data to generate spatially continuous results. The proposed method was applied to the Southwest China and generate daily LST product in 2019. Validation with ground measurements demonstrated a high accuracy with the correlation coefficient changing from 0.73 to 0.88. Additionally, the reconstructed LST dataset exhibits similar temporal variability as existing all-weather satellite-based and reanalysis LST products. The findings reveal that this method shows good potential in generating gap-free LST dataset, especially for the mountain regions with heavy clouds.

Abstract:Daily mean land surface temperature (LST) is a crucial indicator for investigating global long-term climate change. The polar-orbiting thermal infrared sensor (POTIRS) can provide limited instantaneous LSTs of a single day on a global scale. Several studies have developed algorithms to derive daily mean land surface temperature (DMLST) from limited instantaneous daily LST data, but these methods are restricted to using data from a single POTIRS after 2000. This study presents a generalized method for estimating global DMLST utilizing one daytime and one night-time observation from any POTIRS since 1981. The proposed method employs a simple linear regression of two instantaneous LST measurements from different observation times (once during the day and once at night) of POTIRSs based on in situ LST measurements from 227 flux stations operating in diverse climate regions globally. The results demonstrate that this simple linear regression model provides highly accurate estimates of DMLST under all-weather conditions, with a root mean square error (RMSE) value lower than 1.7 K. Additionally, the proposed method was employed to estimate DMLST from instantaneous LST products obtained from various sensors, including Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer aboard the Terra satellite, Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer aboard the polar-orbiting National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite, and Meteorological Operational satellite. Validation results indicate that the DMLSTs estimated from these POTIRS products are in close agreement with the daily mean in situ LST, with RMSE values varying from 2.2 to 2.4 K. We expect that this generalized method will be useful for generating long-term and high-quality DMLST datasets.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is among the most important variables in monitoring land surface processes. LST is often retrieved from thermal infrared remote sensing data, which have a tradeoff between the spatial and temporal resolutions and are spatially incomplete due to cloud contamination. Land surface model (LSM) output can reflect LST under all-weather conditions, but the spatial resolution is relatively coarse. In this study, a two-step LST data fusion framework was proposed for generating MODIS-like LST (at the satellite overpass time for each day) at a 1 km spatial resolution under all-weather conditions. First, MODIS LST on clear days (i.e., all MODIS LST pixels are cloud-free) for a given study region (e.g., 80 km x 80 km) and China Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) LST at a spatial resolution of similar to 7 km x 7 km were fused using the Enhanced Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Reflectance Fusion Model (ESTARFM). Second, systematic biases of the fused LST estimates were corrected by MODIS LST for clear pixels on cloudy days. Results indicate that the fused LST after bias correction (fused LSTcorr) under all-weather conditions is highly consistent with in situ LST measurements made at three sites with different land cover types in the north of China, in terms of mean absolute errors of 2.20-3.08 K, root mean square errors of 2.77-3.96 K, and coefficients of determination of 0.93-0.95. The accuracy of these results is comparable to that of the MODIS LST retrievals at all testing sites. In addition, the fused LSTcorr can well reflect spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability in LST under all-weather conditions, and there is no significant difference in the accuracy of the fused LSTcorr between the clear and cloudy pixels on cloudy days. The developed approach maximizes the potential of quality MODIS LST retrievals and LSM LST output, and generates LST under all-weather conditions without using ancillary remote sensing and in situ data. The generated MODIS-like LST data under all-weather conditions are valuable in soil moisture downscaling and evapotranspiration estimation for better water resources management.
Reconstruction of 60-year (1961-2020) surface air temperature on the Tibetan Plateau by fusing MODIS and ERA5 temperatures

Abstract:The warming amplification of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) has exerted great impacts on the environment in and around the region. It is necessary to thoroughly investigate the temperature changes over the TP. However, the commonly used station observations, satellite products and reanalysis data for relevant studies suffer from deficiencies of sparse spatial distribution, limited temporal coverage and large uncertainties, respectively. This leaves the current understanding of temperature change on the TP still inadequate. Therefore, we propose a multi-source data fusion method to integrate the advantages of different data. Combining the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) products and station observations, this new method first obtains short-term satellite-derived surface air temperature (SAT) estimates over grids. The European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts ReAnalysis 5 land portion (ERA5-Land) temperature with long time range is then clustered and used as independent variables for the Bayesian Ridge Regression (BRR) model. Based on this BRR model, the temporal span of the estimated gridded satellite SAT is extended, and a fused 1-km monthly mean SAT dataset is generated over the TP from 1961 to 2020. The results indicate that the fused data generated by our proposed method has good accuracy with overall RMSE and MBE of 1.33 °C and 1.03 °C, respectively. Despite the temporal and spatial heterogeneity, the performance of the fused SATs is acceptable across seasons and geographical locations. The dataset also shows a great potential for detecting accurate long-term temperature changes across the TP. This fused SAT data owns the advantages from multiple data sources with high accuracy, good spatial continuity, fine spatial resolution and wide temporal coverage, which confirms that our fusion method can provide a favorable opportunity to explore the warming over the TP.
Reconstruction of the Daily MODIS Land Surface Temperature Product Using the Two-Step Improved Similar Pixels Method

Abstract:The MODIS land surface temperature (LST) product is one of the most widely used data sources to study the climate and energy-water cycle at a global scale. However, the large number of invalid values caused by cloud cover limits the wide application of the MODIS LST. In this study, a two-step improved similar pixels (TISP) method was proposed for cloudy sky LST reconstruction. The TISP method was validated using a temperature-based method over various land cover types. The ground measurements were collected at fifteen stations from 2013 to 2018 during the Heihe Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research (HiWATER) field campaign in China. The estimated theoretical clear-sky temperature indicates that clouds cool the land surface during the daytime and warm it at nighttime. For bare land, the surface temperature shows a clear seasonal trend and very similar across stations, with a cooling amplitude of 4.14 K in the daytime and a warming amplitude of 3.99 K at nighttime, as a yearly average. The validation result showed that the reconstructed LST is highly consistent with in situ measurements and comparable with MODIS LST validation accuracy, with a mean bias of 0.15 K at night (−0.43 K in the day), mean RMSE of 2.91 K at night (4.41 K in the day), and mean R2 of 0.93 at night (0.90 in the day). The developed method maximizes the potential of obtaining quality MODIS LST retrievals, ancillary data, and in situ observations, and the results show high accuracy for most land cover types.

Retrieving Soil and Vegetation Temperatures from Dual-Angle and Multipixel Satellite Observations

Abstract:Land surface component temperatures (LSCTs), i.e., the temperatures of soil and vegetation, are important parameters in many applications, such as estimating evapotranspiration and monitoring droughts. However, the multiangle algorithm is affected due to different spatial resolution between nadir and oblique views. Therefore, we propose a combined retrieval algorithm that uses dual-angle and multipixel observations together. The sea and land surface temperature radiometer onboard ESA's Sentinel-3 satellite allows for quasi-synchronous dual-angle observations, from which LSCTs can be retrieved using dual-angle and multipixel algorithms. The better performance of the combined algorithm is demonstrated using a sensitivity analysis based on a synthetic dataset. The spatial errors in the oblique view due to different spatial resolution can reach 4.5 K and have a large effect on the multiangle algorithm. The introduction of multipixel information in a window can reduce the effect of such spatial errors, and the retrieval results of LSCTs can be further improved by using multiangle information for a pixel. In the validation, the proposed combined algorithm performed better, with LSCT root mean squared errors of 3.09 K and 1.91 K for soil and vegetation at a grass site, respectively, and corresponding values of 3.71 K and 3.42 K at a sparse forest site, respectively. Considering that the temperature differences between components can reach 20 K, the results confirm that, in addition to a pixel-average LST, the combined retrieval algorithm can provide information on LSCTs. This article demonstrates the potential of utilizing additional information sources for better LSCT results, which makes the presented combined strategy a promising option for deriving large-scale LSCT products.

Abstract:<p>Accurate estimations of daily mean land surface temperature (LST) are important for investigating the urban heat island effect, land-atmosphere energy exchanges, and global climate change. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors can provide up to four instantaneous LSTs of a single day across the world. However, numerous studies, such as those on climate change and hydrology, require the input of daily mean LSTs rather than instantaneous value. In this paper, we propose a practical method to estimate the daily mean LST using instantaneous LST products derived from MODIS. Based on the in situ LST measurements collected from 235 sites distributed globally, multiple linear regressions of two to four valid instantaneous LSTs at different MODIS observations moments (at least one daytime and one nighttime observations) can provide reliable estimates of daily mean LSTs under all-weather conditions with a root mean square error (RMSE) of less than 1.60 K. In addition, the conditions of clouds would affect the estimation accuracy of daily mean LST to a certain extent. Subsequently, an algorithm is proposed to produce the most complete coverage of daily mean LSTs from instantaneous LST products derived from MODIS. Validation results with in situ measurements show that the daily mean LSTs estimated from the MOD11A1 and MYD11A1 products are similar to the daily mean of the in situ LST, with an RMSE of 2.17 K. Furthermore, the daily mean LST derived from MODIS data is successfully applied to calculate the global annual cycle parameters (ACPs) in the annual temperature cycle (ATC) model. The results of this study show that the daily mean LST can be retrieved accurately from combinations of daytime and nighttime LSTs derived from MODIS. We expect that our findings will be useful for various applications involving global LST trend analysis and climate change.</p>

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is a key parameter when monitoring land surface processes. However, cloud contamination and the tradeoff between the spatial and temporal resolutions greatly impede the access to high-quality thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing data. Despite the massive efforts made to solve these dilemmas, it is still difficult to generate LST estimates with concurrent spatial completeness and a high spatio-temporal resolution. Land surface models (LSMs) can be used to simulate gapless LST with a high temporal resolution, but this usually comes with a low spatial resolution. In this paper, we present an integrated temperature fusion framework for satellite-observed and LSM-simulated LST data to map gapless LST at a 60-m spatial resolution and half-hourly temporal resolution. The global linear model (GloLM) model and the diurnal land surface temperature cycle (DTC) model are respectively performed as preprocessing steps for sensor and temporal normalization between the different LST data. The Landsat LST, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST, and Community Land Model Version 5.0 (CLM 5.0)-simulated LST are then fused using a filter-based spatio-temporal integrated fusion model. Evaluations were implemented in an urban-dominated region (the city of Wuhan in China) and a natural-dominated region (the Heihe River Basin in China), in terms of accuracy, spatial variability, and diurnal temporal dynamics. Results indicate that the fused LST under all-weather conditions is highly consistent with actual Landsat LST data (in situ LST measurements), in terms of a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.94 (0.96–0.99), a mean absolute error of 0.71–0.98 K (0.82–3.34 K), and a root-mean-square error of 0.97–1.26 K (1.09–4.36 K). The generated diurnal Landsat-like LSTs under all weather conditions are able to support diurnal dynamic studies that are the most relevant to human activities, such as the study of urban heat islands (UHIs) and water resource management at the field scale.

Abstract:Annual temperature cycle (ATC) models enable the multi-timescale analysis of land surface temperature (LST) dynamics and are therefore valuable for various applications. However, the currently available ATC models focus either on prediction accuracy or on generalization ability and a flexible ATC modelling framework for different numbers of thermal observations is lacking. Here, we propose a hybrid ATC model (ATCH) that considers both prediction accuracy and generalization ability; our approach combines multiple harmonics with a linear function of LST-related factors, including surface air temperature (SAT), NDVI, albedo, soil moisture, and relative humidity. Based on the proposed ATCH, various parameter-reduction approaches (PRAs) are designed to provide model derivatives which can be adapted to different scenarios. Using Terra/MODIS daily LST products as evaluation data, the ATCH is compared with the original sinusoidal ATC model (termed the ATCO) and its variants, and with two frequently-used gap-filling methods (Regression Kriging Interpolation (RKI) and the Remotely Sensed DAily land Surface Temperature reconstruction (RSDAST)), under clear-sky conditions. In addition, under overcast conditions, the LSTs generated by ATCH are directly compared with in-situ LST measurements. The comparisons demonstrate that the ATCH increases the prediction accuracy and the overall RMSE is reduced by 1.8 and 0.7 K when compared with the ATCO during daytime and nighttime, respectively. Moreover, the ATCH shows better generalization ability than the RKI and behaves better than the RSDAST when the LST gap size is spatially large and/or temporally long. By employing LST-related controls (e.g., the SAT and relative humidity) under overcast conditions, the ATCH can better predict the LSTs under clouds than approaches that only adopt clear-sky information as model inputs. Further attribution analysis implies that incorporating a sinusoidal function (ASF), the SAT, NDVI, and other LST-related factors, provides respective contributions of around 16%, 40%, 15%, and 30% to the improved accuracy. Our analysis is potentially useful for designing PRAs for various practical needs, by reducing the smallest contribution factor each time. We conclude that the ATCH is valuable for further improving the quality of LST products and can potentially enhance the time series analysis of land surfaces and other applications.

Abstract:The trade-off between spatial and temporal resolutions in remote sensing has greatly limited the availability of concurrently high spatiotemporal land surface temperature (LST) data for wide applications. Although many efforts have been made to resolve this dilemma, most have difficulties in generating diurnal fine-resolution LSTs with high spatial details for landscapes with significant heterogeneity and land cover type change. This study proposes an integrated framework to BLEnd Spatiotemporal Temperatures (termed BLEST) of Landsat, MODIS and a geostationary satellite (FY-2F) to one hour interval and 100m resolution, where (1) a linear temperature mixing model with conversion coefficients is combined to better characterize heterogeneous landscapes and generate more accurate predictions for small and linear objects; (2) residuals are downscaled by a thin plate spline interpolator and restored to the primary fine-resolution estimations to include information about land cover type change; and (3) separate operations at annual and diurnal scales with nonlinear temperature modeling are designed to neutralize the hybrid impacts of large scale gap and land cover type change. BLEST was tested on both simulated data and actual satellite data at annual, diurnal and combined scales, and evaluations were conducted with the simulated/actual fine-resolution data, in-situ data, and with three popular fusion methods, i.e., the spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM), the Enhanced STARFM (ESTARFM) and the spatiotemporal integrated temperature fusion model (STITFM). Results show higher accuracy by BLEST with more spatial details and pronounced temporal evolutions, particularly over heterogeneous landscapes and changing land cover types. BLEST is proposed to augment the spatiotemporal fusion system and further support diurnal dynamic studies in land surfaces.

Abstract:Satellite-derived land surface temperatures (LSTs) often encounter a tradeoff between spatial and temporal resolutions, as well as severe cloud contamination. While extensive efforts have focused on resolution enhancement and under-cloud reconstruction, generating fine-resolution (<= 100 m) diurnal LSTs under allweather conditions remains a challenge, which hampers fine-scale monitoring of climatological, hydrological, and ecological processes. The latest 70-m ECOSTRESS observations at varying times of day provide an unprecedented opportunity for detailed mapping of diurnal LST dynamics, and reanalysis products with spatiotemporal continuity offer promising references for all-weather thermal dynamics. However, these advantages have rarely been integrated to concurrently achieve high spatiotemporal resolution and completeness. Here, we present a simple yet effective framework for reconstructing 60-100 m, hourly, all-weather LSTs based on the Landsat, ECOSTRESS and Reanalysis temperature Combination (termed LERC). The framework involves three steps: (i) preliminary under-cloud estimations within annual cycles of several times by fitting an enhanced annual temperature cycle (EATC) model to clear Landsat/ECOSTRESS scenes and China Land Data Assimilation System (CLDAS) LST fluctuations; (ii) optimized daily estimations at each selected time by correcting biases of the preliminary under-cloud estimations and re-modeling the EATC with temporally densified samples; and (iii) hourly seamless estimations by interpolating the two nearest daily estimations with reference to the weighted diurnal changes in CLDAS. LERC was evaluated in an urban-dominated region throughout 2020, resulting in an average root-mean-squared-error of 2.0 K (3.0 K) against 50 Landsat and ECOSTRESS images (hourly ground measurements at 13 sites). Compared to the enhanced spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model, classic ATC model, diurnal temperature cycle model, and three sophisticated all-weather products, LERC demonstrates outperformance in terms of general accuracy, spatiotemporal variability, and robustness against sparse input. LERC has great potentials for generating long-term reliable all-weather LST records with a high spatiotemporal resolution to promote broad applications.

Abstract:The modeling of diurnal land surface temperature (LST) is crucial to extend the temporally discrete satellite thermal observations in application to detect the surface property (such as thermal inertia) and fluxes (such as soil heat flux and evapotranspiration) that are important to climate change studies. This paper proposed a generic framework (GEM) for modeling the LST dynamics in clear-sky periods. This was performed by modeling the ground-surface heat flux, which was then transformed into temperature using the surface energy balance and heat conduction equation. Three terms of fluxes were incorporated into GEM, including the nonhomogeneous term depicting the approximate upward flux, the harmonic term representing the approximate solar radiation, and the residue term involving the surplus atmosphere-related flux variations. In a single diurnal temperature cycle (DTC), we derived seven cases of the GEM, i.e., from the GEM-I to -VII, in which two to twelve controlling parameters are required. These controlling parameters are taken as unknowns in backward inversion using temporally discrete surface temperatures. Validations were performed using in-situ brightness temperatures, and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) LSTs. The results show that the accuracy generally increases from GEM-I to -VII, with the mean absolute error decreasing from 1.71 to 0.33°C. Particularly, GEM-II and -III can be used to normalize the four MODIS LSTs in a DTC without additional information required; and GEM-VI and -VII are useful once high accuracy is required. Further modeling also indicates that GEM is capable of interpolating LSTs under nonstandard cases with arbitrary starting time, duration length, and local latitude. We consider this study could provide practitioners more options within particular applications for modeling the temperature dynamics under diverse requirements of modeling accuracy and controlling parameter number.

Abstract:Fusion of thermal infrared (TIR) and passive microwave (PMW) observations are important techniques for estimating all-weather land surface temperature (LST) of relatively higher resolutions. For such fusion techniques under cloudy weather, PMW observations are especially useful in correcting the cloud-shadowing bias of the real cloudy LST against a theoretically clear-sky one in the daytime. However, PMW observations have very limited transit times in a day, and cannot be fused with asynchronous TIR data as LST can vary significantly during the daytime. To overcome this flaw, we developed a model for simulating the variation of cloud-shadowing bias based on cloud total amount (CTA) information observed by geostationary satellites. As constant coefficients of the model were found to have dependence on space and time, they were dynamically fitted for each pixel in each month using cloud-shadowing bias calculated by TIR and synchronous PMW data in the early-afternoon (1:30 P.M.). The model was then used to provide middle-morning (10:30 A.M.) cloud-shadowing bias estimates, based on which, all-weather LST at 1 km were produced at that specific moment. Validation results show that reconstructed cloudy LST in the middle-morning, with no synchronous PMW observations, has its overall RMSE values against ground measurements and real remote sensing data under cloud between 2.4 and 4.0 K. This accuracy result is generally comparable to that obtained through fusing information from synchronous PMW data in the early-afternoon moment. Therefore, it is prospective to be further applied for generating high-resolution all-weather LST with much shorter re-visit cycles than the satellite PMW data.
