Abstract:This study proposes an algorithm of embedding cohesive elements in Abaqus and develops the computer code to model 3D complex crack propagation in quasi-brittle materials in a relatively easy and efficient manner. The cohesive elements with softening traction-separation relations and damage initiation and evolution laws are embedded between solid elements in regions of interest in the initial mesh to model potential cracks. The initial mesh can consist of tetrahedrons, wedges, bricks or a mixture of these elements. Neither remeshing nor objective crack propagation criteria are needed. Four examples of concrete specimens, including a wedge-splitting test, a notched beam under torsion, a pull-out test of an anchored cylinder and a notched beam under impact, were modelled and analysed. The simulated crack propagation processes and load-displacement curves agreed well with test results or other numerical simulations for all the examples using initial meshes with reasonable densities. Making use of Abaqus’s rich pre/postprocessing functionalities and powerful standard/explicit solvers, the developed method offers a practical tool for engineering analysts to model complex 3D fracture problems.
Nonlinear Fracture Analysis of Delamination Crack Jumps in Laminated Composites

Abstract:A combined analytical and experimental approach is presented to characterize mixed-mode fracture of hybrid material bonded interfaces under four-point bending load, and closed-form solutions of compliance and energy release rate (ERR) of the mixed-mode fracture specimens are provided. The transverse shear deformations in each sublayer of bimaterial bonded beams are included by modeling the specimen as individual Timoshenko beams, and the effect of interface crack-tip deformation on the compliance and ERR are taken into account by applying the interface deformable bilayer beam theory (flexible-joint model). The higher accuracy of the present analytical solutions for both the compliance and ERR of mixed-mode fracture specimens is manifested by comparing them with the solutions predicted by the conventional beam theory (CBT) and finite-element analysis (FEA). As an application example, the fracture of wood-fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) bonded interface is experimentally evaluated by using mixed-mode fracture specimens [i.e., four-point asymmetric end-notched flexure (4-AENF) and four-point mixed-mode bending (4-MMB)], and the corresponding values of critical ERRs are obtained. Comparisons of the compliance rate change and the resulting critical ERR based on the CBT, the present theoretical model, and FEA demonstrate that the crack-tip deformation plays an important role in accurately characterizing the mixed-mode fracture toughness of hybrid material bonded interfaces under four-point bending load. Abstract:This paper presents an integrated numerical algorithm based on the nonlinear augmented finite element method (N-AFEM) to accurately simulate the arbitrary evolving strong discontinuities (cracks/slip lines) and failure behaviors in geotechnical structures. A novel nonlinear elemental augmentation and condensation scheme was first proposed within the N-AFEM framework, which allows the consideration of nonlinear coupled intra-element cracks without the need of additional nodes or nodal DoFs. Then a modified exponential cohesive zone model (CZM) that considers the coupling effects between tension/compression and shear at the fracture surface was proposed to describe the fracture process of geomaterials. Besides, a nonlinear yielding function based on the Mohr-Coulomb strength theory was introduced into the framework and serves as the fracture initiation criteria for geomaterials. Finally, several benchmark examples were simulated and the predicted results were compared with existing numerical or experimental data to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper reports a new algorithm that provides analytic solution to the equilibrium equation in A-FEM. It utilizes a consistency check between trial cohesive stiffness and resulting displacements to differentiate crack displacements from nodal displacements. Benchmark numerical tests demonstrate that the algorithm yields superior numerical accuracy, efficiency, and robustness to other methods. The overall improvement in numerical efficiency is similar to 50 times that of the phantom-node based A-FEM in modeling a 4-point shear beam test. For mixed-mode composite delamination problems, the A-FEM with the algorithm is 20-30% faster than standard CZM despite that in the CZM delamination paths are predefined. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Numerical simulation of nonlinear elastic wave propagation in solids with cracks is indispensable for decoding the complicated mechanisms associated with the nonlinear ultrasonic techniques in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). Here, we introduce a two-dimensional implementation of the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM), which merges the finite element method (FEM) and the discrete element method (DEM), to explicitly simulate the crack induced nonlinear elasticity in solids with both horizontal and inclined cracks. In the FDEM model, the solid is discretized into finite elements to capture the wave propagation in the bulk material, and the finite elements along the two sides of the crack also behave as discrete elements to track the normal and tangential interactions between crack surfaces. The simulation results show that for cracked models, nonlinear elasticity is generated only when the excitation amplitude is large enough to trigger the contact between crack surfaces, and the nonlinear behavior is very sensitive to the crack surface contact. The simulations reveal the influence of normal and tangential contact on the nonlinear elasticity generation. Moreover, the results demonstrate the capabilities of FDEM for decoding the causality of nonlinear elasticity in cracked solid and its potential to assist in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).

Abstract:The discrete element method (DEM) has attractive features for problems with severe damages, but lack of theoretical basis for continua behavior especially for nonlinear behavior has seriously restricted its application. The present study proposes a new approach to developing the DEM as a general and robust technique for modeling the elastoplastic behavior of solid materials. New types of connective links between elements are proposed, the inter-element parameters are theoretically determined based on the principle of energy equivalence and a yield criterion and a flow rule for DEM are given for describing nonlinear behavior of materials. Moreover, a numerical scheme, which can be applied to modeling the behavior of a continuum as well as the transformation from a continuum to a discontinuum, is obtained by introducing a fracture criterion and a contact model into the DEM. The elastoplastic stress wave propagations and the tensile failure process of a steel plate are simulated, and the numerical results agree well with those obtained from the finite element method (FEM) and corresponding experiment, and thus the accuracy and efficiency of the DEM scheme are demonstrated.

Abstract:The finite element method has been widely used to solve different problems in the field of fracture mechanics. In the last two decades, new methods have been developed to improve the accuracy of the solution in 2D linear elastic fracture mechanics problems, such as the extended finite element method (XFEM) or the phantom node method (PNM). The goal of this work is to quantify the differences between some numerical approaches: standard finite element method (FEM), mechanical property degradation, interelemental crack method with multi-point constraints, XFEM and PNM. We explain the different techniques analysed together with their advantages and disadvantages. We compare these numerical techniques to model fracture using problems of reference with known solutions, evaluating their behaviour in terms of convergence with respect to the element size and accuracy of the stress intensity factor (SIF), stresses ahead the crack tip and crack propagation prediction. Some of the new techniques have shown a better accuracy in SIF calculation or stress fields ahead the crack tip and other lead to high errors in local results estimations. However, all methods reviewed here can predict crack propagation for the problems of reference of this work, showing good accuracy in crack orientation prediction.

Abstract:A framework for the discontinuum-based simulation of spalling failure in rock tunnels is proposed. This innovation involves the combined application of the damage-initiation and spalling-limit (DISL) approach with the hybrid lattice/discrete element method (LDEM), a special bonded-block modeling technique that incorporates Rigid Body Spring Network lattice bonds between stochastically generated Voronoi cells. First, verification analyses are conducted to understand the deformability and strength behaviors of the LDEM models via unconfined-compression, triaxial, and direct-tension tests on numerical granite and limestone models. The results reveal that LDEM does not require a calibration procedure to define Young's moduli, Poisson's ratios, tensile strengths, and damage-initiation strength envelopes of the models. Moreover, an equation that relates tensile strength and fracture toughness with the mesh size of the model was derived from tension tests on center-cracked specimens. Subsequently, the DISL-LDEM was applied to two rock tunnel spalling cases, i.e., a square tunnel in Cobourg limestone and the circular Mine-by Experiment tunnel in Lac du Bonnet granite. In-situ observations, finite-element analyses, and empirical data were used to compare the simulated failure modes and spalling-breakout dimensions. Using the results obtained from the study cases, a framework for DISL-LDEM simulations of underground excavations was established. Notably, this novel approach does not require trial-and-error simulations and establishes a clear one-to-one relationship between each numerical input parameter and model behavior. Therefore, the proposed framework acts as a practical numerical tool for discontinuum-based simulations of spalling in rock tunnels.

Abstract:A three-dimensional discrete element model of the connective type is presented, Moreover, a three- dimensional numerical analysis code, which can carry out the transitional process from connective model (for continuum) to contact model (for non-continuum), is developed for simulating the mechanical process from continuum to non-continuum. The wave propagation process in a concrete block (as continuum) made of cement grout under impact loading is numerically simulated with this code. By comparing its numerical results with those by LS-DYNA, the calculation accuracy of the model and algorithm is proved. Furthermore, the failure process of the concrete block under quasi-static loading is demonstrated, showing the basic dynamic transitional process from continuum to non-continuum. The results of calculation can be displayed by animation. The damage modes are similar to the experimental results. The two numerical examples above prove that our model and its code are powerful and efficient in simulating the dynamic failure problems accompanying the transition from continuum to non-continuum. It also shows that the discrete element method (DEM) will have broad prospects for development and application.

Abstract:The Regularized eXtended Finite Element Method (Rx-FEM) with Abaqus implementation is introduced and applied to modeling fracture in laminated composites involving initiation and evolution of matrix cracking and delamination, their interaction and delamination migration. The proposed implementation in Abaqus consists of a technique for modeling the mesh-independent transverse matrix cracks within each ply as well as the delaminations between plies. A mixed-mode cohesive constitutive model is applied for delamination and matrix cracking evolution. The capabilities of the proposed implementation are validated by comparing with the experimental data of the clamped tapered beam sub-element specimen under static loading, which was designed by NASA to study the matrix crack and delamination initiation, propagation, and subsequent crack-induced delamination migration from one ply interface to another. The simulation of the failure path accurately captures significant characteristics of the sequence of damage events observed in the experiments, and the predictions show a good quantitative agreement for stiffness, peak failure load, and the delamination migration location.

Abstract:Interaction mechanism between the intralaminar damage and interlaminar delamination of composite laminates is always a challenging issue. It is important to consider the progressive failure and strain softening behaviors simultaneously during the damage modeling and numerical simulation of composites using FEA. This paper performs three-dimensional finite element analysis of the progressive failure and strain localization of composites using FEA. An intralaminar progressive failure model based on the strain components is proposed and the nonlinear cohesive model is used to predict the delamination growth. In particular, the nonlocal integral theory which introduces a length scale into the governing equations is used to regularize the strain localization problems of composite structures. Special finite element codes are developed using ABAQUS to predict the intralaminar and interlaminar damage evolution of composites simultaneously. The carbon fiber/epoxy composite laminates with a central hole demonstrates the developed theoretical models and numerical algorithm by discussing the effects of the mesh sizes and layups patterns. It is shown the strain localization problem can be well solved in the progressive failure analysis of composites when the energy dissipation due to the damage of the fiber, matrix and interface occurs at a relatively wide area.
Fully-automatic Modelling of Cohesive Crack Growth Using a Finite Element–scaled Boundary Finite Element Coupled Method

Abstract:This study develops a method coupling the finite element method (FEM) and the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) for fully-automatic modelling of cohesive crack growth in quasi-brittle materials. The simple linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM)-based remeshing procedure developed previously is augmented by inserting nonlinear interface finite elements automatically. The constitutive law of these elements is modelled by the cohesive/fictitious crack model to simulate the fracture process zone, while the elastic bulk material is modelled by the SBFEM. The resultant nonlinear equation system is solved by a local arc-length controlled solver. The crack is assumed to grow when the mode-I stress intensity factor KI vanishes in the direction determined by LEFM criteria. Other salient algorithms associated with the SBFEM, such as mapping state variables after remeshing and calculating KI using a “shadow subdomain”, are also described. Two concrete beams subjected to mode-I and mixed-mode fracture respectively are modelled to validate the new method. The results show that this SBFEM–FEM coupled method is capable of fully-automatically predicting both satisfactory crack trajectories and accurate load–displacement relations with a small number of degrees of freedom, even for problems with strong snap-back. Parametric studies were carried out on the crack incremental length, the concrete tensile strength, and the mode-I and mode-II fracture energies. It is found that the KI⩾0 criterion is objective with respect to the crack incremental length.

Abstract:A new numerical model combining LaRC failure criterion and extended finite element method (XFEM) is created to describe the failure behavior in fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. In this model, the onset of intralaminar damages are predicted based on the LaRC failure criterion, and the crack propagation and stiffness degradation are described explicitly by the XFEM. The user subroutine UDMGINI of ABAQUS defines the initial damage criterion and a mixed-mode, energy-based fracture criterion is employed to describe the crack onset and propagation in the enriched region of XFEM. The proposed model is used to investigate the failure behavior of two sets of open-hole laminates under tension. It is demonstrated that the proposed numerical method can predict the experimental data well.

Abstract:Macro-scale delamination and micro-scale fiber–matrix debonding events may notably affect the mechanical performance of fibrous composite elements. This article presents a two-dimensional finite-element (FE)-based formulation of interface of a small but finite thickness relying on the so-called linear elastic-brittle interface model (LEBIM) to be applied for simulation of an adhesive interface debonding and fiber–matrix decohesion failures. This modeling strategy is implemented in the commercial FE package ABAQUS by means of the user-defined subroutine UMAT. The practicability of the developed interface model is assessed through the comparison of the computational results with experimental data and with previous boundary element method (BEM) analyses using the LEBIM formulation. Specifically, LEBIM results for the interlaminar fracture toughness test showed an excellent agreement with experimental results (adhesive saw-tooth post-peak response was captured). Besides, studies of several micro-mechanical fiber–matrix configurations showed that fiber–matrix debonding events are the predominant failure mechanisms for moderate transverse loading values. The developed tool will certainly contribute to elucidate several open aspects regarding the interface crack behavior in fiber-reinforced composite materials.

Abstract:Heterogeneous systems, such as composites, are common in many areas of engineering. In recent years, there has been interest in using mesoscale modeling to gain insight into the mechanical behavior and failure of composites. However, when using the conventional finite element method, it can be very difficult to create high-quality body-fitted meshes of composite microstructures, especially in three dimensions. In this paper, we propose a novel immersed finite element method for debonding across bimaterial interfaces at finite strains. This method allows the background and foreground regions to be discretized independently and correctly treats the volume redundancy due to overlapping meshes. In contrast to cohesive zone methods, our method provides a consistent transition from rigid bonding to softening and separation. This is achieved through a variational multiscale discontinuous Galerkin (VMDG) approach. An additional benefit of VMDG is that the method is primal and does not require the user to select a penalty parameter. We demonstrate the method's implementation in an existing code via the addition of a preprocessor and minimal changes to existing element subroutines. The robustness and accuracy of the method are demonstrated in a selection of debonding problems involving composite microstructures.

Abstract:The phase field fracture method is attracting significant interest. Phase field approaches have enabled predicting - on arbitrary geometries and dimensions - complex fracture phenomena such as crack branching, coalescence, deflection and nucleation. In this work, we present a simple and robust implementation of the phase field fracture method in the commercial finite element package Abaqus. The implementation exploits the analogy between the phase field evolution law and the heat transfer equation, enabling the use of Abaqus’ in-built features and circumventing the need for defining user elements. The framework is general, and is shown to accommodate different solution schemes (staggered and monolithic), as well as various constitutive choices for preventing damage under compression. The robustness and applicability of the numerical framework presented is demonstrated by addressing several 2D and 3D boundary value problems of particular interest. Focus is on the solution of paradigmatic case studies that are known to be particularly demanding from a convergence perspective. The results reveal that our phase field fracture implementation can be readily combined with other advanced computational features, such as contact, and deliver robust and precise solutions. A simulation method for fatigue-driven delamination in layered structures involving non-negligible fracture process zones and arbitrarily shaped crack fronts

Abstract:Most of the existing methods for fatigue-driven delamination are limited to two-dimensional (2D) applications or their predictive capabilities have not been validated in three-dimensional (3D) problems. This work presents a new cohesive zone-based computational method for simulating fatigue-driven delamination in the analysis of 3D structures without crack migration. The method accurately predicts fatigue propagation of non-nelgigible fracture process zones with arbitrarily shaped delamination fronts. The model does not require any kind of fitting parameter since all the input parameters are obtained experimentally from coupon tests. The evaluation of the energy release rate is done using two new techniques recently developed by the authors (the growth driving direction and the mode-decomposed J-integral) leading to an accurate prediction of delamination propagation under mixed-mode and non-self-similar growing conditions. The new method has been implemented as a UEL for Abaqus and validated against an experimental benchmark case with varying crack growth rate and shape and extension of the fracture process zone.
A discrete cohesive zone model for beam element: Application to adhesively bonded laminates and sandwich panels

Abstract:A new discrete cohesive zone model (DCZM) is presented for modeling the interface behavior of adhesive-bonded thin laminates and sandwich panels. The proposed model treats the interface as a spring element and the adherent as a beam element. The use of the preceding assumptions facilitates the simplification of the computational framework reducing the problem from a 2D to 1D, thereby relaxing the requirements of maintaining the aspect ratio of elements in the finite element mesh. For thin laminates, the constitutive relation of the adhesive is represented by a bi-linear traction-separation law, whereas for sandwich panels, an exponential law is employed to model the adhesive behavior. In order to validate the proposed model for thin laminates, simulations of three established fracture tests: DCB, ENF, and MMB have been undertaken. Additionally, for the sandwich panel, two experiments documented in the literature have been simulated for assessing the efficacy of the modelling. One experiment has a mode-I interface failure and the other one a mode-II interface failure between the core and skin. It has been observed that the model is not sensitive to either the element size or the load step size. The results have been compared with reported (benchmark) numerical, analytical, and experimental findings. The proposed methodology for thin laminates offers a significant reduction in the computational effort (reduced number of unknown degrees of freedom compared to existing methods) with no compromise on the accuracy of the predictions. Specifically, it reduces the unknown degrees of freedom by more than 25\% compared to the corresponding mesh used in existing continuum cohesive zone model (CCZM) approaches. The Newton-Raphson solver can achieve quick convergence and no line search feature is required. The proposed algorithm is easy to implement on any computational platform.

Abstract:As a nonlocal alternative of classical continuum theory, peridynamics (PD) is mathematically compatible to discontinuities, making it particularly attractive for failure prediction. The PD theory on the other side can be computationally demanding due to its nonlocal interactions. A coupling between PD and refined higher-order finite element method (FEM) integrates their salient features. The present study proposes a computational approach to couple three-dimensional peridynamics with two-dimensional higher-order finite elements based on classical elasticity. The bond-based PD modeling is considered in a region where damage might appear while refined finite element modeling is used for the remaining region. The refined finite elements employed in this study are based on the 2D Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF), which provides 3D-like accuracy with optimized computational efficiency. The coupling between PD and FEM is achieved through the Lagrange multiplier method which permits physical consistency and compatibility at the interface domain. An adaptive convergence check algorithm is also proposed to achieve predetermined accuracy in the solution with minimum computational effort. Simulations of quasi-static tension tests, wedge splitting tests and L-plate cracking tests are carried out for verification. In-depth analysis shows that the present approach can reproduce the linear deformation, material degradation and crack propagation in an effective way.
