Abstract:<p>The components and structural characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the overlying water were studied using various spectroscopy in Beiyun River. The relationship between the DOM composition and water quality was discussed. The result declared that the overall pollution of the Beiyun River was serious, and that the DOM content of the overlying water was between 9.60 and 28.70 mg/L. The DOM was mainly composed of humic-like substances (72.83%), proteins (9.49%), and microbial metabolites (17.68%). Furthermore, the structure and composition of DOM affected the nutrition level of river and reflected the water quality to some extent. Especially, the humification degree (SUVA254) of DOM can indirectly reflect the content of different types of nitrogen in the overlying water. Thus, some preliminary advice has been proposed to improve water quality by analyzing the content, composition and structural characteristics of DOM in the overlying water. These results offer novel ideas for the management of the Beiyun River.</p>

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the composition and structural characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the surface water of the North Canal and to explore the relationship between DOM composition and water quality. Specifically, the paper analyzes the components and structural characteristics of DOM in the surface water of the North Canal through various spectroscopic techniques, revealing the impact of DOM content, composition, and structure on water quality. ### Main Research Questions: 1. **Composition and Structural Characteristics of DOM in the Surface Water of the North Canal**: Study the main components and structural characteristics of DOM in the surface water of the North Canal through spectroscopic analysis methods. 2. **Relationship Between DOM Composition and Water Quality**: Explore how the composition and structure of DOM affect the water quality of the North Canal, especially how the composition of DOM reflects the nutrient levels of the water body. 3. **Preliminary Suggestions for Improving Water Quality**: Based on the content, composition, and structural characteristics of DOM, propose preliminary suggestions for improving the water quality of the North Canal. ### Research Background: - The North Canal is one of the most important river systems in Beijing. In recent years, due to the rapid development of the urban sub-center (Tongzhou area), the North Canal has faced serious nitrogen and phosphorus pollution problems. - Rapid urbanization has exacerbated the changes in the aquatic ecosystem, affecting the quality of surface water and the concentration and quality of DOM. - Human activities (such as wastewater discharge, land cover changes, landscape pattern changes, etc.) have impacted the bioavailability and composition of DOM. ### Research Methods: - **Sampling**: Collect water samples from different locations in the North Canal and measure the physical and chemical parameters of the water samples using various instruments. - **Spectroscopic Analysis**: Analyze the composition and structure of DOM through UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and other techniques. - **Data Processing**: Use software such as Origin 8.0, Excel 2017, SPSS 17.0, and MATLAB 2012a for data analysis. ### Research Results: - **Physical and Chemical Parameters**: The overall pollution of the North Canal is severe, with DOM content in the surface water ranging from 9.60 to 28.70 mg/L, mainly composed of humic substances (72.83%), proteins (9.49%), and microbial metabolic products (17.68%). - **Spectral Characteristics**: The UV-Vis and fluorescence spectral characteristics of DOM indicate differences in DOM composition between the upstream and downstream areas, with upstream DOM containing more hydroxyl, carbonyl, and ester groups. - **Fluorescence Spectroscopy Analysis**: Through parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and fluorescence regional integration (FRI) techniques, further analysis of DOM composition revealed that DOM is mainly composed of humic substances and some soluble microbial metabolic products. ### Discussion: - **Relationship Between DOM Structure and Water Quality**: The composition and structure of DOM have a significant impact on the water quality of the North Canal, especially the aromaticity of DOM (SUVA 254), which can indirectly reflect the different types of nitrogen content in the water body. - **Environmental Significance**: Rapid urbanization has led to the deterioration and subsequent improvement of the water quality of the North Canal. Industrial wastewater and domestic sewage discharge are the main sources of pollution. The government should strengthen the supervision of the effluent indicators of sewage treatment plants and increase the coverage of rural sewage treatment to further optimize the water quality of the North Canal. ### Conclusion: - This study analyzes the composition and structural characteristics of DOM in the surface water of the North Canal through various spectroscopic techniques, revealing the mechanism of DOM's impact on water quality, providing theoretical basis and guidance for the management and restoration of the North Canal.
