Abstract:The sealing capacity of magnetofluidic (MF) rotating seals is limited by the highest magnetization of the sealing ferrofluids (FFs) of about 1000 G (80 kA m-1). A sharp, almost an order of magnitude, increase in the supported pressure drop is possible by using a magnetorheological (MR) suspension as sealing fluid, owing to the much higher saturation magnetization of MR fluids compared to FFs. However, rotating seals with MR fluids have several shortcomings, such as a significant increase of the friction torque due to the growth of shear stress in the strong magnetic field specific to MF seals and leakage of the non-magnetic carrier liquid. At least partly, these issues can be avoided by using ferrofluid based extremely bidisperse MR suspensions of micrometer-sized iron (Fe) particles dispersed in a ferrofluid, as sealing fluid. The composite Fe3O4-Fe magnetic fluid used in this study consisted of hundreds of nanometers up to few microns size structures of interconnected (welded) Fe nanoparticles (FeMNPs) dispersed in a high colloidal stability ferrofluid with 500 G (40 kA m-1) saturation magnetization. The volume fraction of iron NPs varies from 0.5 to 15% in the ferrofluid carrier which significantly increases the magnetization and simultaneously produces important changes of flow properties in magnetic field of the resulting composite fluid, from Newtonian to strongly non-Newtonian behavior. The evaluation of the magnetic and magnetorheological behavior includes the dependence of magnetization, effective viscosity, magnetoviscous effect and dynamic yield stress on the volume fraction of Fe nanoparticles dispersed in the ferrofluid carrier. The seal gap filled with interconnected Fe nanospheres consists in randomly distributed microregions with a high intensity and high gradient magnetic field that captures the ferrofluid and provides a new sealing mechanism. Already a small amount of interconnected Fe nanospheres additive (2.5-5.0% volume fraction) produces four times increase of the rotating seal burst pressure, a much higher increase than what can be obtained from using a conventional magnetic fluid with the same magnetization. The nano-composite sealing magnetic fluid proved to be a cost-effective solution to significantly increase the performance of multi-stage rotating MF seals.

Abstract:This work reported a carbon layer modified magnetite (Fe3O4) nanospheres (Fe3O4@C) which could be applied in preparing high performance magnetic fluid. The porous Fe3O4@C nanospheres were prepared by calcinating the Fe3O4@Polydopamine (Fe3O4@PDA) precursor in N2 atmosphere. The shear stress of Fe3O4@C-based magnetic fluid was as high as 24.9 Pa at saturated magnetic field, which was about 3.8 times larger than pristine Fe3O4-based magnetic fluid (6.6 Pa). Furthermore, the particle level dynamic simulation was employed to analyze the microstructure evolution and shear stress of Fe3O4@C-based magnetic fluid under applying an external magnetic field. The chain-like model well explained the magnetorheological (MR) mechanism and the simulation results matched perfectly with the experimental data. Since the crystallinity of Fe3O4 was improved during the pyrolysis, Fe3O4@C nanospheres possessed a higher saturation magnetization. The stronger magnetic dipolar forces and chain-chain interactions resulted in a much steadier Fe3O4@C chain-like structure. As a result, it was found that the superior MR performance and high stability of the Fe3O4@C-based magnetic fluid were originated from the core-shell and porous structures of Fe3O4@C. This work proposed a valuable magnetic particle model to prepare high performance magnetic fluid and further understand the origination of MR effects.

Abstract:In this study, hierarchically structured mesoporous Fe3O4 nanospheres were synthesized using a solvothermal method and the application of the obtained Fe3O4 nanospheres in magnetorheological (MR) fluid was investigated in detail. The morphology, microstructure and magnetic properties of the as-synthesized Fe3O4 nanospheres were examined through different characterization techniques, such as SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, BET and SQUID. The results of rheological measurements revealed that the prepared homogeneous MR fluid based on mesoporous Fe3O4 nanospheres showed typical MR performances, exhibiting a rapid and reversible transition from a liquid-like to a solid-like state under the action of an external magnetic field. More importantly, it should be noted that the Fe3O4 nanospheres-based MR fluid demonstrated enhanced a sedimentation stability as compared to that of carbonyl iron (CI) particles-based MR fluid. This finding was probably assigned to the particular mesoporous structure and the decreased density mismatch between two components of MR fluid.

Abstract:Uniform Fe3O4 submicron spheres assembled by tiny nanocrystals were fabricated via a facile one-step solvothermal strategy. The morphology, crystal structure, mesoporous characteristics, elemental composition and magnetic properties of the resultant magnetic particles were investigated extensively through various characterization techniques. The resulting Fe3O4 submicron spheres were nearly monodisperse with an average diameter of 508 nm and demonstrated typical mesoporous structures and superparamagnetic behavior. The rheological responses of magnetorheological (MR) suspension composed of Fe3O4 submicron spheres to different intensity of magnetic fields were investigated and the sedimentation stability tests were conducted and compared with that of carbonyl iron particles. The formed MR fluid behaved as Newtonian fluid without an external magnetic field and turned into Bingham behavior under the action of magnetic field. In addition, no significant settlement was observed in the recording period, showing an excellent sedimentation stability for the developed MR fluid.

Abstract:In this work, a superparamagnetic fluid based on Fe3O4 hollow nanospheres was developed and the influence of the particle structure on the rheological properties was investigated. The Fe3O4 hollow nanospheres which were prepared by using the hydrothermal method presented the superparamagnetic characteristic, and the magnetic fluid thereof showed well magnetorheological (MR) effect. The stable magnetic fluid had a high yield stress even at low shear rate and its maximal yield stress was dramatically influenced by the measurement gap. In comparison to the Fe3O4 nanoparticles based magnetic fluid (MF), the Fe3O4 hollow nanospheres based MF exhibited better MR effect and higher stability since the unique hollow nanostructure. The shear stress of the hollow nanospheres is about 1.85 times larger than the nanoparticles based MF because it formed stronger chains structure under applying a magnetic field. To further investigate the enhancing mechanism, a molecule dynamic simulation was conducted to analyze the shear stress and the structure evolution of the Fe3O4 hollow nanospheres based MF and the simulation matched well with the experimental results.

Abstract:In this research, novel hierarchically structured cauliflower-shaped MnFe2O4 nanospheres were synthesized via a simple solvothermal method and their potential application for high performance magnetorheological fluids was investigated. The samples were comprehensively characterized using FE-SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, BET, TGA, XPS and VSM. It was revealed that the prepared MnFe2O4 nanospheres exhibited hierarchical cauliflower-like morphology and the average particle size was found to be 182 nm. More importantly, the MnFe2O4 nanospheres demonstrated typical mesoporous structure, high specific surface area of 30.3 m2/g and moderate saturation magnetization of 29.3 emu/g, which were suitable for preparation of a uniform and stable MR suspension. The rheological performances comprising shear stress, viscosity, storage modulus and loss modulus of MR fluid under different external magnetic fields were measured using a dynamic rotational rheometer. The results indicated that the MR fluid possessed enhanced MR responses as the magnetic field intensity increased, which were attributed to the rapid formation of robust chain-like structures composed of MnFe2O4 nanospheres inside the MR suspension. In addition, it was observed that the sedimentation stability of MR fluid containing MnFe2O4 nanospheres was much more prominent than that of the suspension based on spherical carbonyl iron particles in the same testing period.

Abstract:A new type of magnetic fluid was prepared by dispersing monodispersed iron–silica (Fe–SiO2) composite particles in polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400. The composite particles Fe–SiO2 were synthesized by hydrogen reduction from α-Fe2O3–SiO2 spheres. Their microstructures were observed by a high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) and the magnetism was characterized with a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. Both steady-state and dynamic rheological properties of the magnetic fluid under different magnetic fields were studied by using a rheometer. Experimental results show that this magnetic fluid has a relatively high magnetoviscous effect at low shear rates. The yield stress of this material shows an increasing trend with a magnetic flux density. Also, viscoealstic properties of such materials are different from conventional ones.

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) of varying sizes and morphologies using the solvothermal method and incorporated them as additives into carbonyl iron magnetorheological fluids (CI-MRFs). We tested the shear stress, yield stress, viscosity and storage modulus of the MRFs using a magnetorheometer to investigate how the size and morphology of Fe3O4 NPs influence the performance of MRFs. Our results indicate that the size of the additive nanoparticles significantly enhances the MR properties of MRFs more than their morphological attributes. This enhancement results from optimizing and stabilizing the CI magnetic chain structure of the nanoparticles in the presence of a magnetic field. Specifically, MRFs with Fe3O4 NPs averaging 250 nm in size exhibit higher yield stress and storage modulus and show increased resistance to shear strains. Although the nanoparticle morphology has a modest effect on the rheological properties of MRFs, hexahedral and octahedral particles can enhance rheological properties through increased internal friction compared to spherical particles. Additionally, Fe3O4 NPs of different sizes and morphologies improve the sedimentation stability of MRFs, with those around 250 nm being particularly effective at slowing down sedimentation. Both hexahedral and octahedral Fe3O4 NPs slow down sedimentation more effectively than spherical Fe3O4 NPs. This paper investigates the rheological properties of CI-MRFs by controlling the additive particle size and morphological features, providing a research foundation for the design and optimization of MRFs.

Abstract:This work reports an experiment/simulation combination study on the magnetorheological (MR) mechanism of magnetic fluid based on Fe3O4 hollow chains. The decrease of shear stress versus the increasing magnetic field was observed in a dilute magnetic fluid. Hollow chains exhibited a higher MR effect than pure Fe3O4 hollow nanospheres under a small magnetic field. A modified particle level simulation method including the translational and rotational motion of chains was developed to comprehend the correlation between rheological properties and microstructures. Sloping cluster like microstructures were formed under a weak external field (24 mT), while vertical column-like microstructures were observed under a strong field (240 mT). The decrease of shear stress was due to the strong reconstruction process of microstructures and the agglomeration of chains near the boundaries. The chain morphology increased the dip angle of microstructures and thus improved the MR effect under a weak field. This advantage made Fe3O4 hollow chains to be widely applied for small and low power devices in the biomedical field. Dimensionless viscosity as a function of the Mason number was collapsed onto linear master curves. Magnetic fluid in Poiseuille flow in a microfluidic channel was also observed and simulated. A qualitative and quantitative correspondence between simulations and experiments was obtained.

Abstract:This paper first prepared a water-based magnetic fluid using a chemical co-precipitation method and conducted a detailed characterization and calculation of its important magnetization properties. Key parameters for analyzing the influence mechanism on the rheological properties of the water-based magnetic fluid were obtained. Subsequently, the impact of different magnetic field and shear rates on the magnetoviscous effect, shear-thinning behavior, and yield stress of the water-based magnetic fluid was studied through steady rotation measurements. The results showed a positive correlation between viscosity, shear stress, and yield stress with the magnetic field. Additionally, we also provide theoretical prediction formulas for the magnetoviscous effect based on the influence of microstructures formed by solid-phase magnetic particles in the magnetic field. The dimensionless Mason number was used to establish the scaling law relationship between viscosity measurements and theoretical values, with results showing good agreement between measured and theoretical values. The Herschel–Bulkley model and the Casson model were employed to obtain the dynamic yield stress values of the sample, and a quadratic linear increase relationship between yield stress and magnetic field was derived. These research findings provide important references for a deeper understanding of the physical and chemical properties of water-based magnetic fluid and for optimizing its application.

Abstract:Some supramolecular polyacrylate‐based liquid crystal polymers (PLCPs) were prepared by polyacrylic acid, a liquid crystal monomer and 3,5‐pyridinedicarboxylic acid. Series of magnetic liquid crystal particles (Fe3O4@PLCPs) with core‐shell structure were prepared by modifying surface of magnetic nanoparticles Fe3O4 by the PLCPs. The Fe3O4@PLCPs showed a saturation magnetization strength above 51.17 emu/g, which is similar to pure magnetic Fe3O4, indicating good magnetism and magnetic field dependence. Series of magnetorheological fluids were fabricated by Fe3O4@PLCPs (using as dispersed phase) and silicone oil (using as carrier liquid). The effects of mesogen, magnetic particle, and the polymer matrix on magnetorheological performance and settling stability were investigated. The magnetorheological fluid based on 10% Fe3O4@PLCP‐1 showed the best performance at an applied magnetic field of 100 mT in this study. Furthermore, the magnetorheological fluids showed excellent settling stability because the density of Fe3O4@PLCPs was lower than that of Fe3O4. The Fe3O4@PLCPs‐based fluids presented certain application potential in the field of magnetic fluid due to the excellent magnetorheological effect and settling stability.

Abstract:A type of dimorphic magnetorheological (MR) fluid was prepared by adding wire-like iron nanostructures into the conventional carbonyl iron based MR fluid. The Fe nanowires were synthesized through reducing Fe2+ ion with excessive sodium borohydride in aqueous solution. The rheological behaviors of the dimorphic MR fluids were measured with a rotational rheometer and the sedimentation properties were also studied in this work. It was found that the Fe wires additives can greatly enhance the stress strength of the dimorphic MR fluids comparing with the conventional MR fluids. The sedimentation of the dimorphic MR fluids was also mitigated greatly.

Abstract:Magnetorheological fluid (MRF) is a material whose viscosity can be changed by a magnetic field. However, one of the challenges with MRF is that the magnetic particles (MPs) used often settle out of suspension, reducing its effectiveness. To improve the suspension stability and rheological properties of MRF to some extent, this paper prepares Fe3O4 hollow spheres using a simple, one-step synthetic solvothermal method. The surface morphology, particle size distribution, and crystal structure of Fe3O4 hollow spheres are characterized. The results show that the shell thickness of Fe3O4 hollow spheres forms about 100 nm and a saturation magnetization intensity of 86.33 emu/g at a ratio of FeCl3 & sdot;6H2O to CO(NH2)2 substance of 1:10 when the porosity agent urea is 0.06 mol. Furthermore, MRF is prepared using dimethyl silicone oil as the base carrier fluid. Suspension stability and rheological properties of MRF are investigated by varying the content ratio of Fe3O4 hollow spheres. While increasing the mass fraction of Fe3O4 hollow spheres, the viscosity and shear yield stress of MRF increase. MRF based on Fe3O4 hollow spheres significantly improves the suspension stability and rheological properties of the fluid, making it more suitable for practical applications.

Abstract:Poly(N-methylaniline) (PNMA) coated magnetite (Fe3O4) (PNMA@Fe3O4) composite particles synthesized through both chemical oxidative polymerization and chemical co-precipitation processes were used as a magnetic additive for carbonyl iron (CI)-based magnetorheological (MR) fluid. The effect of the additive's content on the rheological characteristics of the MR fluid in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field was studied along with its effect on the sedimentation ratio compared with that of CI-based MR fluid. Shear stress curves as a function of the shear rate of the CI-based MR fluids with the additive were found to be well-fitted by the Herschel–Bulkley equation and the slope of the dynamic yield stress was determined to be 2.0. The curves also showed yield stresses higher than those of the CI-based MR fluid for different magnetic field strengths. Specifically, the CI-based MR fluid with 1.0 wt% additive showed the highest yield stress and the best solid-like properties among the tested samples. Furthermore, the sedimentation issue for the CI-based MR fluid was found to improve significantly, especially for the lowest settling rate of the MR fluid with 1.0 wt% additive. The addition of 1.0 wt% PNMA@Fe3O4 additive resulted in the CI-based MR fluid exhibiting the best properties, owing to improved rheological features and a reduced sedimentation rate.

Abstract:The hydrothermal fabrication of crystalline manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) nanoparticles and their application as a magnetorheological (MR) fluid dispersed in an insulating oil are described herein. The morphology and crystal structure of the MnFe2O4 nanoparticles are revealed by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. In addition, with a relatively high saturation magnetization of the MnFe2O4 particles, their typical MR behavior is demonstrated by rheometric steady shear and dynamic oscillation tests under an applied magnetic field. Moreover, the flow and yield stress curves for the MnFe2O4 nanoparticle-based MR fluid are shown to conform to the Herschel–Bulkley model with a slope of 1.5. Finally, under the same magnetic field strength, the dynamic yield stress is shown to be higher than the elastic yield stress.

Abstract:In this paper we performed steady shear and oscillatory magnetorheological (MR) studies in magnetic fluids containing CoNi nanoclusters of 450 nm in diameter. Co-rich nanoclusters were synthesized by conventional homogeneous nucleation without any external surfactant or reducing agent in liquid polyol at elevated temperature. The x-ray diffraction, energy dispersive X-Ray analysis, scanning and transmission electron microscopy studies were done for analyzing the sample composition and morphology. Two variants of fluid samples were prepared by dispersing 15 vol% and 20 Vol% of CoNi powders in castor oil. Room temperature steady magnetoshear studies indicate viscoplastic behavior with stronger dependence of static yield stress on magnetization than a dipolar coupling that was operational in the dynamic yield stress. Magnetosweep measurements at constant shear rate showed interesting relaxation at high magnetic fields. We also explored dynamical elastic behavior through oscillatory magnetorheological studies under both strain sweep and frequency sweep modes, and showed glass transition like phenomenon occurring in them above critical shear amplitudes.

Synthesis of Ferrofluids Using a Chemically Induced Transition Method and Their Characterization

Abstract:Using an altering chemically induced transition route, magnetic nanoparticles as well as nanoparticles modified with oleic acid have been prepared. The modified nanoparticles have been used to synthesize a high-quality kerosene-based ferrofluid, in which the mass fraction percentage of particles consisting of a γ-Fe2O3 core and an oleic acid coating, ϕm, amounted to 55%. Ferrofluids having lower concentrations of particles were obtained by diluting the mother ferrofluid. Magnetization measurements showed the as-synthesized ferrofluids to have excellent dispersity of the particles and field-induced inter-particle interactions. Optical transparency measurements confirmed that the ferrofluids showed a sensitive field-induced effect of chain-like aggregation, with redispersion of the particles after removing the magnetic field. According to results concerning both particle structure and ferrofluid density, the volume fraction percentage of particles, including both the γ-Fe2O3 core and the oleic acid coating, ϕ′v, as well as that of the γ-Fe2O3 alone, ϕv, can be deduced.

Abstract:Hydrophobic ionic liquid ferrofluids (ILFFs) are studied for use in electrospray thrusters for microsatellite propulsion under nonatmospheric and in high-temperature environments. We synthesized a hydrophobic ILFF by dispersing sterically stabilized γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) in the ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. A diblock copolymer, C4-RAFT-AA10-DEAm60, was synthesized to facilitate multipoint bidentate anchoring to the NP through the acrylic acid block. The DEAm60 layer was incorporated to generate steric repulsion between particles to protect against the aggregation of magnetized particles arising from dipole-dipole attraction. The effect of shearing and variation in the magnetic field strength on the steric repulsion was examined using the DLVO theory. The effect of varying the magnetic field strength and particle concentration on the viscoelastic properties of the ferrofluid was evaluated using rheometry. The viscosity of the ferrofluid increased with the magnetic field strength, indicating that the magnetized particles assembled into a structure. The level of straining required to break down the structure formed by the magnetized particles increased with the magnetic field strength and particle concentration. The absence of particle interlocking during shearing was indicated by the smooth viscosity versus shear rate traces. The DLVO analysis showed that increasing the magnetic attraction between the particles causes the DEAm60 brush layers on the particles to overlap more, resulting in an increase in the steric repulsion. As overlapping increases, osmotic repulsion is caused before progressing to a strong elastic repulsion. The effect of the polymer solubility and particle interaction due to hydrodynamic forces on the steric repulsion was also analyzed.
