Abstract:Although the impacts of infertility-related stress on mental health have been testified in the literature, the underlying mechanism between them is still not clear. In response to this issue, 286 Chinese women who were pursuing medical treatment for fertility problems in two state-owned hospitals were invited to complete the survey, including the 7-item Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), the Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI), the 5-item Mental Health Inventory (MHI-5), and demographic variables (e.g., age). The multiple linear regression method (SPSS 16) was used to investigate the impact of infertility-related stress and marital satisfaction on infertile women's mental health. Results showed that the total FPI score-and the specific domains of Social Concern, Relationship Concern, and Rejection of Child-Free Lifestyle in particular-had a significant negative relation with infertile women's mental health and marital satisfaction as a moderator between them. Therefore, the core of marital relationship and specific infertility-related stress should be addressed in psychological intervention programs for people facing infertility in mainland China.

Abstract:Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the stigma status of infertile women in China and to determine the influencing factors. Methods: 366 infertile women from the gynecological and reproductive departments of two tertiary hospitals completed socio-demographic questionnaires, the Infertility Stigma Scale (ISS) and the Mandarin Fertility Problem Inventory (M-FPI). Results: The scores of stigma and infertility-related stress in infertile women were (52.51 ± 17.74) and (150.03 ± 17.51), respectively. Multiple regression analysis found that location of residence, regarding children as the most important thing in life, talking to others about infertility and infertility-related stress were the main influencing factors of stigma in infertile women, which explained 17.3% of the total variance. Conclusions: In the current study, the level of stigma in women with infertility was at the middle range. Location of residence, regarding children as the most important thing in life, whether to talk with others about infertility and infertility-related stress were the four main influencing factors of stigma.

Abstract:BackgroundInfertility-related stress can seriously impact the fertility quality of life (QoL) of infertile women. Resilience, as a coping resource, can effectively combat psychological stress. This study aimed to evaluate the fertility QoL of infertile women and to examine whether resilience moderates the association of infertility-related stress with fertility QoL.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was conducted in northeast of China from December 2017 to February 2018. Out of 559 women outpatients with infertility, 498 (89.1%) completed self-reported questionnaires including the FertiQoL Scale, Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI) and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis and simple slope analysis were applied to explore the influencing factors related to fertility QoL as well as to examine the moderating effect of resilience on the association of infertility-related stress with fertility QoL.ResultsThe mean FertiQoL score was 64.54 ± 16.90 among the participants. Household monthly income and causes of infertility were significantly related to fertility QoL. In addition, infertility-related stress was negatively related to fertility QoL, and resilience was positively associated with fertility QoL, explaining 36.3% of the variance. Resilience moderated the association of infertility-related stress with fertility QoL. Specifically, the effect of infertility-related stress on fertility QoL varied by low(1 SD below the mean, B = - 0.496, β = - 0.714, P < 0.001), mean (B = - 0.293, β = - 0.422, P < 0.001) and high (1 SD above the mean, B = - 0.090, β = - 0.130, P < 0.001) levels of resilience. The higher resilience was, the weaker the effect of infertility-related stress on fertility QoL was.ConclusionsOverall, women with infertility in China had relatively low FertiQoL scores. Resilience influenced the association of infertility-related stress with fertility QoL. Infertile patients’ psychological status must be addressed and adequate resilience-based interventions such as mindfulness-based skills should be provided to improve fertility QoL of women with infertility.

Abstract:Paraoxonase is an arylesterase enzyme that is expressed in the liver and found in the circulation in association with apoA1 and the high-density lipoprotein, and prevents the accumulation of oxidized lipids in low-density lipoproteins in vitro. Common polymorphisms in genes encoding paraoxonase are established risk factors in a variety of vascular disorders including coronary artery disease and carotid artery stenosis, but their association with Alzheimer disease (AD) is controversial. We tested the association of 29 SNPs in PON1, PON2 and PON3 with AD in 730 Caucasian and 467 African American participants of the MIRAGE Study, an ongoing multi-center family-based genetic epidemiology study of AD. Eight SNPs were associated with AD in the African American families (0.0001< or =P< or =0.04) and two SNPs were associated with AD in Caucasian families (0.01< or =P< or =0.04). Of note, the pattern of association for the PON1 promoter SNP -161[C/T] was the same in both ethnic groups (P=0.006). Haplotype analysis using sliding windows revealed 11 contiguous SNP combinations spanning the three PON genes with significant global test scores (0.006< or =P< or =0.04) in the two ethnic groups combined. The most significantly associated haplotype comprised SNPs in the region spanning the -161[C/T] SNP (P=0.00009). Our results demonstrate association between AD and variants in the PON gene cluster in Caucasians and African Americans.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To develop a reliable, valid instrument to evaluate perceived infertility-related stress.DESIGN: Prospective study.SETTING: University-affiliated teaching hospital.PATIENT(S): Consecutively referred patients (1,153 women and 1,149 men) seen for infertility treatment.INTERVENTION(S): None.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Participants' infertility-related stress was assessed by written questionnaire using the Fertility Problem Inventory. Current levels of anxiety, depression, and marital satisfaction also were determined.RESULT(S): Women described greater global stress than men and higher specific stress in terms of social concerns, sexual concerns, and need for parenthood. Both men and women facing male infertility reported higher global stress and more social and sexual concerns than men and women experiencing female infertility. Social, sexual, and relationship concerns related to infertility were more effective predictors of depression and marital dissatisfaction than expressed needs for parenthood or attitudes toward child-free living.CONCLUSION(S): The Fertility Problem Inventory provides a reliable measure of perceived infertility-related stress and specific information on five separate domains of patient concern. Patterns of infertility-related stress differed depending on gender, fertility history, and infertility diagnosis. Among patients receiving treatment, social, sexual, and relationship concerns appear central to current distress. Counseling interventions that target these domains appear likely to offer maximal therapeutic benefit.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose This study investigated the relationships among irrational conceptions of parenthood, fertility stress, and social support, as well as the mediating effect of fertility stress, in patients with repeated implantation failure. Methods Patients who underwent assisted reproductive technology due to repeated implantation failure at the Reproductive Centre at Women's Hospital between January 2020 and August 2022 were selected using cross-sectional research and convenience sampling. A total of 129 patients with recurrent implantation failure were investigated using the Irrational Parenthood Cognitions Questionnaire (IPCQ), Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI), and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS). Results The differences in irrational parenthood cognitions, fertility, stress, and social support among patients with repeated implantation failure in the education and yearly household income subgroups were statistically significant ( P <0.001). Pearson correlation analysis revealed that irrational parenthood cognitions were favorably correlated with all measures of reproductive stress ( r =0.384 to 0.664, all P <0.01) and negatively correlated with social support ( r =-0.310, p <0.01). The fertility stress of patients with repeated implantation failure fit the structural equation model of irrational parenthood cognitions and social support well [X2/df=2.04, Comparative Fit Index (CFI)=0.944, Tucker–Lewis (TLI)=0.905, Root Mean Squared Error of Approximation (RMSEA)=0.090]. The bootstrap test results revealed that the mediating effect of the 95% CI ranged between -0.506 and -0.109, and the interval did not contain 0. Fertility stress had a strong mediating effect on the relationship between irrational parenthood cognitions and social support. Conclusions The mediating effect of reproductive stress on the relationship between irrational parenthood cognitions and social support in patients with repeated implantation failure was significant. It is important for medical and nursing staff to address physical and psychological illnesses and develop effective intervention strategies from the perspectives of fertility stress, social support, and cultural background, with the ultimate goal of improving mental health.

Abstract:Infertility is not a fatal disease but it really produces infertility-related stress and affects individuals' quality of life to a great extent. This study aims to investigate the relations among infertility-related stress, negative emotions and quality of life in infertile outpatients, and suppose gender difference as well as Dark Triad, which contained three dark personality traits: Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy, would moderate the relations. 105 infertile outpatients age range 20–49 completed a cross-sectional questionnaire on the Fertility Quality of Life scale, the Fertility Problem Inventory, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale a the Chinese version of Dirty Dozen. Results showed that negative emotions mediated the relations between infertility-related stress and quality of life. Dark Triad could not moderate the relations between infertility-related stress, negative emotions, and quality of life, but gender can moderate the associations between infertility-related stress and negative emotions. Specifically, the association between infertility-related stress and negative emotions was stronger in men than in women. Infertility-related stress has direct and indirect effects on infertile outpatients' quality of life. It is important to consider the important roles of emotions and gender difference between patients, and delivering targeted intervention programs.

Abstract:Fertility treatments can be physically and psychologically exhausting for those who do it due to high expectations and possible frustration with the negative results. Moreover, it demands time and high financial investment, which are sometimes stressful factors for the working patient. Two aspects that can ease this context are resilience and social support. The present article aims to investigate the levels of work-family conflict in individuals undergoing infertility treatment and their associations with stress, resilience, and social support. The survey of 242 patients addressed sociodemographic data, Infertility-Related Stress Scale-Brazil (IRSS-BP), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 (CD-RISC 10), Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), and Work-Family Conflict Scale. Data were analyzed using R (4.3.2). Findings suggest that the level of Work-Family Conflict is higher in men ( p = 0.020). The scale is also positively associated with Infertility Stress and negatively correlated with Resilience and Social Support.

Abstract:Infertility can be stressful for infertile couples. This study aims to examine the intra‐dyadic associations between stigma, communication patterns, and infertility‐related stress in couples undergoing artificial insemination by donor semen (AID). This cross‐sectional study was conducted from January to April 2021. Two hundred and three couples undergoing AID were recruited from a reproductive centre in China. All of the couples completed a two‐item stigma questionnaire, Communication Pattern Questionnaire, and Fertility Problem Inventory. The actor‐partner interdependence mediation analysis was performed using AMOS 23.0. The analysis demonstrated significant actor–actor effects for couples undergoing AID. More specifically, higher levels of stigma among wives and husbands were associated with more negative communication patterns, thereby increasing their own infertility‐related stress. Simultaneously, there was a significant partner–actor effect among infertile wives, demonstrating that the husband's stigma can affect his wife's infertility‐related stress by influencing her communication patterns. Couples undergoing AID experience increased infertility‐related stress when they have high levels of stigma and negative communication patterns, and husbands' stigma is correlated to wives' communication patterns. Therefore, dyadic interventions aiming to improving stigma and enhancing positive communication may be conducive to reducing infertility‐related stress.

Abstract:Between 10% and 15% of couples in western society are affected by infertility. As a major source of psychological distress, infertility may be accompanied by a substantial decline in well-being, and mental symptoms including those of depression and anxiety. This study aimed to quantify impairments in life satisfaction in infertile couples and to identify psychosocial variables moderating these impairments. For this purpose, 228 infertile couples completed the Life Satisfaction Questionnaire (LSQ), Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), Partnership Questionnaire (PQ), Social Support Questionnaire, (SSQ) and Questionnaire on the Desire to Have a Child (QDC). Our sample scored below the norm of the general population on the LSQ sum score and various subscales, including those assessing social relationships, health, sexuality, leisure activities, and self-evaluation. Correlation and regression analysis revealed an inverse association of life satisfaction (LSQ) with stress (PSQ), negative affect (PANAS), and worry (PSWQ), and positive associations with positive affect (PANAS), partnership quality (PQ), social support (SSQ), and the strength of the desire to have a child (QDC). These findings support the notion of markedly reduced satisfaction with numerous life areas in the context of infertility. Psychosocial factors such as increased stress related to infertility treatment, affective impairments, partnership problems, lack of social support or social exclusion may contribute to this reduction. Psychological interventions aimed at controlling stress, strengthening partnerships, and improving social inclusion may be helpful in reducing the burden of infertility and improving the life satisfaction of affected couples.

Abstract:Infertility can lead to significant psychological distress among women, yet the roles of hope and resilience in mitigating depressive symptoms remain inadequately explored, particularly within the Chinese context. We performed a cross-sectional observational study to investigate the psychological impacts of infertility among Chinese women as well as to discern whether hope and resilience can influence their depressive symptoms. We recruited 364 Chinese women seeking infertility treatment in the Shandong region. Participants completed validated assessments including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Herth Hope Index. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. We observed elevated levels of depressive symptoms and anxiety among women with infertility. Particularly, demographic factors such as an older age, rural residence, lower income, lower education, adverse life events, and longer infertility duration were associated with increased depressive symptoms. Individuals who experienced adverse life events were at a 2.42-fold increased risk of developing depressive symptoms (P = .04). Depressive symptoms were inversely correlated with both hope levels (r = -0.25; P < .05) and resilience levels (r = -0.32; P < .05). Hope levels were positively correlated with resilience (R = 0.67; P < .05). After controlling for the interaction of hope and resilience, we found that only depressive symptoms and resilience were negatively correlated. The psychological burden of infertility among Chinese women is widespread and affects many individuals from different demographic backgrounds. Interventions aimed at increasing resilience may be helpful to mitigate depressive symptoms.
Direct and indirect effects of perceived social support on women's infertility-related stress

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Social support can be a critical component of how a woman adjusts to infertility, yet few studies have investigated its impact on infertility-related coping and stress. We examined relationships between social support contexts and infertility stress domains, and tested if they were mediated by infertility-related coping strategies in a sample of infertile women.METHODS: The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Copenhagen Multi-centre Psychosocial Infertility coping scales and the Fertility Problem Inventory were completed by 252 women seeking treatment. Structural equation modeling analysis was used to test the hypothesized multiple mediation model.RESULTS: The final model revealed negative effects from perceived partner support to relationship concern (β = -0.47), sexual concern (β = -0.20) and rejection of childfree lifestyle through meaning-based coping (β = -0.04). Perceived friend support had a negative effect on social concern through active-confronting coping (β = -0.04). Finally, besides a direct negative association with social concern (β = -0.30), perceived family support was indirectly and negatively related with all infertility stress domains (β from -0.04 to -0.13) through a positive effect of active-avoidance coping. The model explained between 12 and 66% of the variance of outcomes.CONCLUSIONS: Despite being limited by a convenience sampling and cross-sectional design, results highlight the importance of social support contexts in helping women deal with infertility treatment. Health professionals should explore the quality of social networks and encourage seeking positive support from family and partners. Findings suggest it might prove useful for counselors to use coping skills training interventions, by retraining active-avoidance coping into meaning-based and active-confronting strategies.

STUDENTS ́ INTERESTS AND INTERDISCIPLINARY INSTRUCTION IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE

Abstract:This paper presents the research project IFUN Interest and Interdisciplinary Instruction in Science and Mathematics. As researchers in mathematics and science education we are basically interested in how students’ learning and understanding in these subjects might be improved. Many research studies indicate that students’ interest in science and mathematics declines during lower secondary school level (Hoffmann et al. 1998), but international surveys as well as other indicators do not indicate any general decrease of interest in science among the population in most countries (Sjøberg 2003). A simple assumption is that many young people find various aspects of science and mathematics interesting, but it is beyond the capacity of the school to catch and hold this interest. Until recently research in interest has not to any great extent addressed the relation between interest and education at the upper secondary level. The reason for this could be the assumption that students have developed relatively stable individual interest profiles during lower secondary school. According to Prenzel (1998) there are several factors that lead to questioning this assumption. The students are confronted with an abundance of topics, and although many of these do not correspond to the students’ individual interest they may lead to new areas of interest. At Danish upper secondary education the students’ student can choose between different subject packages and a number of optional subjects. The choices of students might among other things be based on interest. Also the students’ at upper secondary education have to make decisions about future education and profession. Personal interest is a key factor behind modern youth’s educational choice and career aspirations are used as indicators of interest in scientific fields (Gardner 1998). It is characteristic for research in students’ interests that the domains, which have been studied, are ones that belong to academically defined curricula with focus on a single subject, for instance physics or mathematics. In the light of current tendency towards increased interplay and integration between different subjects, interest research in the field of mathematics and science should also include broader and interdisciplinary domains that are associated with the applied, environmental, technological and socio-scientific content. It is the intention of the IFUN-project to fulfill these gaps in interest research. With focus on interdisciplinary domains of the disciplines mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and technology the research questions of the IFUN-project are:
Family-Related Opinions and Stressful Situations Associated with Psychological Distress in Women Undergoing Infertility Treatment

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate how family-related opinions and stressful situations are related to psychological distress in women undergoing infertility treatment. The subjects in this cross-sectional study were recruited from female patients undergoing infertility treatment (n = 2540) at 70 infertility treatment institutions in Japan. Because of non-participation or missing data, the number of subjects included in the analysis was 635 (response rate, 25.0%). The family-related opinions and stressful situations were evaluated using the original questions. Psychological distress was assessed using a self-report measure, the Kessler Six-question Psychological Distress Scale (K6). The K6 scores of the following participants were significantly (p < 0.05) and independently high: those with more frequent miscarriage/stillbirth/abortions, those with repeated miscarriages as the cause of infertility, those with infertility of unknown causes, those living with no child, those having a low joint income with their partner, those with the opinion that "women should devote themselves to their household duties" those who had considered stopping treatment, those without the opinion that "married life without children is favorable" and those who had experienced stressful situations such as inadequate explanation by doctors, frustration of multiple failed attempts, differences of opinion with the partner, and lack of knowledge regarding when to stop treatment. Family-related opinions and stressful situations associated with psychological distress in women undergoing infertility treatment are outlined. The results of this study may contribute to the prevention of and care for psychological distress in female patients undergoing infertility treatment.

Abstract:Background Anxiety and depression are the most common psychological causes of distress in infertile women. Our study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of depression and anxiety and investigate the effects of self-esteem on the association of infertility-related stress with depression and anxiety among infertile women. Methods This study was conducted between December 2017 and May 2018. Questionnaires containing Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI), Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) were distributed among 536 female infertility patients in Shenyang, China. Hierarchical linear regression analyses were used to examine the mediating and moderating role of self-esteem. Baron and Kenny’s technique, asymptotic, and resampling strategies were used to confirm the mediating role of self-esteem on the associations between infertility-related stress with depression and anxiety. Results The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 27.9% and 42.2% among Chinese female infertility patients, respectively. Infertility-related stress was positively associated with depression and anxiety, whereas self-esteem was negatively associated with depression and anxiety. Additionally, the effects of infertility-related stress on depression and anxiety gradually decreased along with an increase in self-esteem. Meanwhile, self-esteem partially mediated the associations between infertility-related stress with depression and anxiety. Conclusion A high prevalence of psychological distress was found among infertile women. Self-esteem mediated and moderated the effects of infertility-related stress on depression and anxiety. Additionally, infertility-related stress and self-esteem were associated with psychological distress, which explained why infertile women had a higher prevalence of depression and anxiety. Therefore, interventions that focus on self-esteem may be effective and should be used as a resource to combat mental health problems.

The Relationship between Fertility Stress and Life Quality in Non-Pregnant Patients after IVF-ET

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the relationship between fertility stress and life quality in non-pregnant patients undergoing IVF-ET.Methods:The cross-sectional survey was carried out by studying the basic situation,the Fertility Question Inventory (FPI) scale and the Fertility Quality of Life (FertiQoL) scale among 351 non-pregnant patients with IVF-ET failures in our center from May 2017 to October 2017,including 104 non-pregnant patients underwent more than 3 times of transplantation and 247 non-pregnant patients underwent less than 3 times of transplantation.The fertility stress and life quality was described by FPI and FertiQoL,respectively.The correlation between fertility stress and life quality was explored using Pearson method.Results:The total score of FPI in non-pregnant patients underwent IVF-ET was 162.22±20.63,and the total score of FertiQoL was 58.79±12.79.There were no significant differences in the FPI total scores and sub-item score,and FertiQoL total score and sub-item score,between patients being transplanted more than 3 times and patients being transplanted less than 3 times (all P＞0.05).Pearson analysis showed that there was positive correlation between the childless stress score in FPI and the total score in FertiQoL (P＜0.05),and that there was negative correlation between other item score in FPI and the total score in FertiQoL (P＜0.05).Multiple linear regression analysis showed that fertility stress,age and literacy were the main factors of the life quality in patients with IVF-ET failures (F=9.140,R2=0.391,P＜0.01).Conclusions:The fertility stress of non-pregnant patients underwent IVF-ET is an important factor influencing the life quality.The greater the fertility stress,the lower the life quality.Should pay attention to the psychological pressure in those non-pregnant patients underwent IVF-ET failures,and improve their life quality by proactively releasing the fertility stress.

Abstract:Abstract Backgroud To investigate the factors influencing fertility quality of life in infertile men, constructing a structural equation model of the factors influencing fertility quality of life in infertile men, and to provide suggested measures for improving fertility quality of life in infertile men. Methods It is a Observational study. Infertile men (n = 250) attending a fertility centre in a hospital in Xinjiang, matched 1:2 men with no obvious male factor in the control group (n = 500).The Quality of Fertility Life Scale, the Social Support Scale, the Fertility Stress Scale and the Positive Attention Awareness Scale were used to conduct the survey. The model was constructed by applying the maximum likelihood estimation method in Mplus 8.3 software, to explore the factors influencing the quality of reproductive life of infertile men through path analyses. Differences between the case and control groups were statistically significant ( P < 0.05) in terms of total fertility quality of life scores, core entry dimensions, affective responses, physical and mental relationships, selective treatment dimensions, and treatment tolerance. Results Past medical history, history of exposure to hazardous environments, health insurance reimbursement, social support, fertility stress, and mindfulness are important factors affecting the quality of fertility life of infertile men. Conclusion The quality of fertility life of infertile men is not optimistic. By improving the level of mindfulness, fertility stress, and social support, we propose appropriate measures to improve the quality of fertility life of infertile men. These measures can improve their confidence in clinical diagnosis and infertility treatment, enabling them to cope positively with these challenges.

Craniocervical arachnoid cyst in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome: a unique case: case report.

Abstract:Klippel-Feil syndrome, or brevicollis, is a complex congenital disorder caused by the improper segmentation of the cervical vertebrae. The authors present the very rare case of a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome who presented with an intradural arachnoid cyst at the craniocervical junction. They also examine possible factors contributing to this association. A 46-year-old woman presented with complaints of progressively worsening headaches and dizziness of 18 months' duration. She also demonstrated mild bilateral upper-extremity weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed fused cervical vertebrae and a dorsal intradural arachnoid cyst at the craniocervical junction, extending down to the fourth cervical level. Because of worsening myelopathy and the presence of brainstem compression, the patient underwent surgical excision of the arachnoid cyst, which was approached via a midline posterior suboccipital/upper cervical route. An endoscope was introduced through a gap between the occiput and fused upper cervical vertebrae, and the arachnoid cyst was widely fenestrated. Postoperatively, the patient has remained symptom free for more than 2 years with evidence of good radiological decompression. The authors report a unique association between craniocervical arachnoid cyst and Klippel-Feil syndrome. To their knowledge, no other cases of this association have been reported in the literature. Arachnoid cysts should be part of the differential diagnosis in the presence of worsening myelopathic symptoms or pain in patients with Klippel-Feil syndrome.
Stress, anxiety, and depression of both partners in infertile couples are associated with cytokine levels and adverse IVF outcome

Abstract:PROBLEM: Psychiatric disorders and stress in women have been associated with poor IVF outcome. We hypothesized that both partners in the infertile couples are emotionally affected, and cytokines in both may link psychological to reproductive outcome.METHOD OF STUDY: Forty-five IVF couples completed questionnaires and visual analog scales for stress and psychiatric disorders and had cytokines measured in serum, semen, cervicovaginal, and follicular fluids. Multivariable analyses, t tests, maximum likelihood estimates, Spearman correlation, and data mining were applied.RESULTS: Psychopathology was found in 72% of the couples. Female and male stress were associated with stress, anxiety, and depression in the respective partner, and with a lower likelihood of clinical pregnancy and live birth. Lower serum TGF-β and higher cervicovaginal IL-6 and IL-1β were associated with stress. In data decision trees, cytokines in relation to stress and depression in both partners were found indicative of IVF failure.CONCLUSION: Infertile couples may benefit from psychiatric evaluation and treatment of both partners.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Over the last few years, the impact of infertility on the psychological well-being of couples has been well recognised. Men and women with infertility experience stress, anxiety and depression and their relationship might be under pressure.MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a non-experimental correlational descriptive study where transversal analysis using questionnaires and quantitative data was performed for 76 couples with diagnosed infertility under the care of various reproductive medicine clinics in Romania between 2018 to 2019. Participants were asked to fill, via internet or in person, a set of tests including data on socio-demographic and infertility characteristics along with five psychological tests: The Fertility Problem Inventory (FPI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI), Dyadic Adjustment Scale and Interpersonal Support Evaluation List-12. The aim of the study was to explore how couples with infertility respond and adapt to this diagnosis and to assess the relationship between emotional disorders, marital adjustment and social support.RESULTS: Mean age of females was 34.2 and of males 36.7 and 38.2% of the couples were experiencing infertility for > 6 years. Women had worse scores on infertility-related distress (FPI) (t = -4.35, p = 0.01), on the BDI depression scale (t = -5.43, p = 0.01) and on anxiety scales (t = -5.48, p = 0.01). Participants with a longer duration of infertility scored significantly higher on infertility-related distress than those with more recent difficulties. Marital adjustment scores correlated negatively with emotional disorders. Both appraisal social support and belonging support moderated the relationship between state-anxiety and marital adjustment.CONCLUSIONS: Infertility carries a significant psychological burden for the couple and the longer its duration, the higher the distress level. Women seem to be more vulnerable to its psychological consequences. Marital adjustment correlates negatively with the degree of emotional disorders. In couples with high levels of social support, the relationship between state-anxiety and marital adjustment was negatively correlated.
