Abstract:Abstract Expanded bed adsorption (EBA) emerged in the early 1990s in an attempt to integrate the clarification, capture and initial product concentration/purification process. Several mathematical models have been put forward to describe its operation. However, none of the models developed specifically for EBA allows simultaneous prediction of bed hydrodynamics, mass transfer/adsorption and (unwanted) interactions and fouling. This currently limits the development and early optimization of EBA‐based separation processes. In multiphase reactor engineering, the use of multiphase computational fluid dynamics has been shown to improve fundamental understanding of fluidized beds. To advance EBA technology, a combination of particle, equipment and process scale models should be used. By employing a cascade of multiscale simulations, the various challenges EBA currently faces can be addressed. This allows for optimal design and selection of equipment, materials and process conditions, and reduces risks and development times of downstream processes involving EBA. © 2018 The Authors. Measurement and Modelling of Moisture Distribution and Water Binding Energy of Dredged Sludge

Abstract:The dewatering of dredged sludge is a critical step in the minimization and reutilization of this solid waste. However, there is a lack of available literature on the fundamental drying characteristics of dredged sludge. In this work, two kinds of typical sludge dredged from an urban watercourse were tested by low-field NMR to investigate the water distribution in sludge and it was found that water contained in sludge can be classified into three categories: free water, capillary water and bound water. In addition, a novel model was proposed based on the Lennard-Jones equation and Kelvin law to quantitatively evaluate the binding energy during drying. Further, the model results were experimentally verified by thermogravimetry differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA). Results show that the trends of the model are consistent with the experimental values and the gradient of energy consumption during dehydration can be divided into three main stages. In stage 1, the total energy required for dewatering equals the latent heat of free water. In stage 2, binding energy reaches dozens to hundreds of kJ/kg accounting for capillary action. In stage 3, binding energy increases steeply reaching almost thousands of kJ/kg due to intermolecular interactions. All the discovered aspects could improve the management and disposal of dredged sludge from an energy cost perspective.
Influence of Loosely Bound Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) on the Flocculation, Sedimentation and Dewaterability of Activated Sludge.

Abstract:Laboratory experiments on the activated sludge (AS) process were carried out to investigate the influence of microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), including loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), on biomass flocculation, sludge settlement and dewaterability. The heat EPS extraction method was modified to include a mild step and a harsh step for extracting the LB-EPS and TB-EPS, respectively, from the sludge suspension. Six lab-scale AS reactors were used to grow AS with different carbon sources of glucose and sodium acetate, and different sludge retention times (SRTs) of 5, 10 and 20 days. The variation in the bioreactor condition produced sludge with different abundances of EPS and different flocculation and separation characteristics. The sludge that was fed on glucose had more EPS than the sludge that was fed on acetate. For any of the feeding substrates, the sludge had a nearly consistent TB-EPS value regardless of the SRT, and an LB-EPS content that decreased with the SRT. The acetate-fed sludge performed better than the glucose-fed sludge in terms of bioflocculation, sludge sedimentation and compression, and sludge dewaterability. The sludge flocculation and separation improved considerably as the SRT lengthened. The results demonstrate that the LB-EPS had a negative effect on bioflocculation and sludge–water separation. The parameters for the performance of sludge–water separation were much more closely correlated with the amount of LB-EPS than with the amount of TB-EPS. It is argued that although EPS is essential to sludge floc formation, excessive EPS in the form of LB-EPS could weaken cell attachment and the floc structure, resulting in poor bioflocculation, greater cell erosion and retarded sludge–water separation.
Modeling microbial products in activated sludge under feast-famine conditions.

Abstract:We develop an expanded unified model that integrates production and consumption of internal storage products (X-STO) into a unified model for extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), soluble microbial products (SMP), and active and inert biomass in activated sludge. We also conducted independent experiments to find needed parameter values and to test the ability of the expanded unified model to describe all the microbial products, along with original substrate and oxygen uptake. The model simulations match all experimental measurements and provide insights into the dynamics of soluble and solid components in activated sludge exposed to dynamic feast-and-famine conditions in two batch experiments and in one cycle of a sequencing batch reactor. In particular, the model illustrates how X-STO cycles up and down rapidly during feast and famine periods, while EPS and biomass components are relatively stable despite feast and famine. The agreement between model outputs and experimental EPS, SMP, and X-STO data from distinctly different experiments supports that the expanded unified model properly captures the relationships among the forms of microbial products.
Modeling and Simulation of the Formation and Utilization of Microbial Products in Aerobic Granular Sludge

Abstract:A mathematical model is established to simulate the formation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), soluble microbial products (SMP), and internal storage products (X-STO) in aerobic granular sludge. The sensitivity of these microbial products concentrations toward the key model parameters is analyzed. Independent experiments are conducted to find required parameter values and to test its predictive ability. The model is evaluated by using one-cycle operating experimental results of a lab-scale aerobic granule-based sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and batch experimental results. Results show that the model is able to describe the microbial product dynamics in aerobic granules and provide further insights into a granule-based SBR. The affect of the initial substrate and biomass concentrations on the formation of microbial products in aerobic granular sludge can therefore be analyzed by model simulation. A higher substrate concentration results in a greater concentration of EPS, SMP, and X-STO. An accumulation of biomass in the bioreactor leads to an increased production rate of EPS, SMP, and X-STO. Abstract:The contribution of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), including loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), to the aggregation of both aerobic and anaerobic sludge is explored using the extended DLVO theory. It is observed that the aggregation abilities of both sludge samples decrease with the extraction of LB-EPS and TB-EPS, implying the crucial roles of EPS in sludge aggregation. Furthermore, through analyzing the interaction energy curves of sludge before and after the EPS extraction using the extended DLVO theory, it is found that both LB-EPS and TB-EPS have a substantial contribution to the sludge aggregation. The interaction energy of LB-EPS is always negative, suggesting that the LB-EPS always display a positive effect on the sludge aggregation. On the other hand, the interaction energy of TB-EPS is not always negative, depending on the separation distance between sludge cells. These results imply that the LB-EPS and TB-EPS have different contributions to the sludge aggregation.

Abstract:Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play a crucial role in the flocculation of activated sludge during biological wastewater treatment. However, as EPS may be classified into sub-fractions, the exact roles of different EPS fractions in sludge flocculation remain to be further defined. This study investigated the contribution of EPS fractions to the sludge flocculation based on a refined EPS classification considering the function and composition of the EPS sub-fractions, including loosely-bound extra-microcolony polymers (LB-EMPs), tightly-bound extra-microcolony polymers (TB-EMPs) and extra-cellular polymers (ECPs). The flocculation ability of the sludge before and after the extraction of the EPS fractions was determined using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. Combined with the flocculation test and sludge characterization, the effects of the EPS fractions on the interaction energy and attachment of microbial cells were evaluated by extended DLVO analysis. The PIV results indicate that sludge flocculation ability decreases with the extraction of EPS. The interaction-energy curves obtained from the sludge before and after the stepped EPS extraction suggest that different EPS fractions contribute to sludge flocculation to different degrees. The interaction energy of LB-EMPs and TB-EMPs is always negative, indicating their important and positive roles in sludge flocculation. In contrast, the contribution of ECPs to sludge flocculation is not always positive, depending on the separation distance between the sludge cells. The quantitative findings will help develop more effective approaches to enhance sludge flocculation by regulating the EPS contents.

Abstract:The interaction by which sludge proteins bind to conditioners significantly impacts sludge dewatering performance. Nonetheless, a limited understanding of the interaction mechanisms restricts the elucidation of the dewatering process. This study proposes a molecular-level, covariant binding mechanism based on the analysis of the heterogeneity, response sequence, and active site of sludge protein-tannic acid (TA) binding. It utilizes fluorescence spectroscopy and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) in combination with fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) theory. The disruption of soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS) resulted in the exposure of internal EPS, facilitating sludge dewatering. The C-O groups in polysaccharides and proteins within S-EPS were linked to TA before the N-H in amide II. However, the N-H bond in loosely bound EPS preferentially binds to TA. Likewise, higher TA doses (≥0.3 mM/g TS) shifted the characteristic peak wave number. Protein substrates were transformed and exposed many groups with higher reactivity towards TA, which means TA concentration also affected their binding sites to proteins. In addition, utilizing the Tachiya model with FRET theory corroborated the existence of non-radiative energy transfer. The combination of spectroscopy and mathematical model represents an ideal approach for obtaining molecular-level mechanisms underlying sludge dewatering, thus providing an effective strategy for sludge disposal.

Abstract:In this work the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by mixed microbial community in activated sludge are characterized using gel-permeating chromatography (GPC), 3-dimensional excitation–emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy measurement and mathematical modeling. Chromatograms of extracted EPS exhibit seven peaks, among which proteins have four peaks and polysaccharides have three peaks. Evolution of the chromatogram area indicates that the quantity of produced EPS increases significantly in the substrate utilization process. With the parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) approach, two components of the polymer matrix are identified by the EEM analysis, one as EPS proteins at Ex/Em 280/340nm and one matrix associated as fulvic-acid-like substances at 320/400nm. The proteins and fulvic-acid-like substances in the EPS increase in the substrate utilization phase, but decrease in the endogenous phase. To have a better insight into EPS production, the kinetic modeling of EPS is performed with regard to their molecular weight distribution and chemical natures identified by GPC and EEM. In this way, the dynamics of these important microbial products are better understood.

Abstract:Laboratory experiments were carried out on activated sludge (AS) to investigate the correlations between the content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the performance of biosolids–water separation, including sludge flocculation, sedimentation, compression, and dewatering, under non-steady-state conditions. On three stabilized AS reactors changes were made in sludge retention time (SRT), substrate composition, and loading rate, respectively, to bring about unstable operation to the reactors. A two-step heating method was used to extract from the sludge the easily extractable EPS, or loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS), and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), respectively. The experimental results demonstrate dynamic changes in sludge characteristic and EPS production under the non-steady-state conditions. During the early phase of transition after a change was imposed, the sludge became generally worse in flocculation, compressibility, and dewaterability. With the acclimatization of the biomass to the new process conditions, biosolids–water separation showed a general trend of improvement. Changes in AS process condition also resulted in considerable variations in EPS production. The change of the LB-EPS content appeared to be more significant than that of the TB-EPS. Throughout the non-steady-state operation, the sludge flocculating behavior, settleability, compressibility, and dewaterability had a positive correlation with the LB-EPS content; however, no correlation could be found between these properties and the TB-EPS content. The results suggest that although EPS is essential to biofloc formation, excessive EPS in the form of LB-EPS would weaken cell attachment and deteriorate the AS floc structure, resulting in poor biosolids–water separation.

Abstract:Simultaneous recovery of biopolymers and enhanced bio-reactor performance are promising options for sustainable wastewater treatment, and the bioactivity of sludge after biopolymer extraction is thus critical for the performance of the system. To this end, stratified extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), including slime, loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS), and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS), were extracted, and the bioactivities of the consequent extraction residues were assessed using aerobic respirogram, kinetic, and flow cytometry (FCM). After the initial weak extraction of slime, the particle size distribution of the sludge significantly decreased, and subsequent extractions of LB-EPS and TB-EPS produced an equivalent size distribution. In contrast, the fractal dimension decreased after each extraction, suggesting that LB-EPS and TB-EPS affected the compactness of flocs rather than the size. The aerobic bacteria distribution estimated using respirogram shows that slime mainly encapsulated heterotrophs while LB-EPS mainly encapsulated nitrifiers. In addition, the ammonia-nitrogen affinity coefficient decreased from 1.79 to 0.28 mg/L when slime was removed, thereby encouraging the activities of autotrophic nitrifiers. Further removal of LB-EPS induced high energy dispersion as the maintenance coefficient m and the metabolic dispersion index μ/m increased from 0.11 to 0.22 and 0.44 to 0.63, respectively. Meanwhile, the yield rate decreased from 0.77 to 0.66. Although pellets that resulted from TB-EPS extraction were not aerobically active as described by respirogram and growth curves, they were still metabolically active as measured by live/dead cell counting and redox sensor green signal. These pellets used more energy for maintenance as indicated by the high maintenance coefficient than those residual after either slime or LB-EPS extraction. In addition, the variation in bacteria community distribution across flocs was related to the variation in temperatures, suggesting that the inner part of a floc might be hotter than the outer side. Therefore, compared to bacteria in the raw sludge, the viable bacteria bounded in LB-EPS and TB-EPS convert more energy to heat rather than growth. These results indicate that energy was dispersed as metabolic heat for the LB-EPS extracted sludge, and removal of LB-EPS favored thermogenesis and sludge reduction. Based on the above findings, a simultaneously EPS-recovery and performance enhancement configuration is thus proposed, which holds great promise for the integration of next-generation wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract:A mathematical model with a consideration of energy spilling is developed to describe the activated sludge in the presence of different levels of metabolic uncouplers. The consumption of substrate and oxygen via energy spilling process is modeled with a Monod term, which is dependent on substrate and inhibitor. The sensitivity of the developed model is analyzed. Three parameters, maximum specific growth rate ( μ max ), energy spilling coefficient ( q max ), and sludge yield coefficient ( Y H ) are estimated with experimental data of different studies. The values of μ max , q max , and Y H are found to be 6.72 day -1 , 5.52 day -1 , and 0.60 mg COD mg -1 COD for 2, 4-dinitrophenol and 7.20 day -1 , 1.58 day -1 , and 0.62 mg COD mg -1 COD for 2, 4-dichlorophenol. Substrate degradation and sludge yield could be predicted with this model. The activated sludge process in the presence of uncouplers that is described more reasonably by the new model with a consideration of energy spilling. The effects of uncouplers on substrate consumption inhibition and excess sludge reduction in activated sludge are quantified with this model.
Molecular Insights into Extracellular Polymeric Substances in Activated Sludge.

Abstract:Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are known to crucially affect the properties and performance of activated sludge, but the detailed influential mechanisms and the pertinence to specific compositional, structural properties of EPS are still elusive. Such knowledge gaps have severely limited our ability in optimizing biological wastewater treatment processes, for which long-term robust and efficient sludge performance remains one of the main bottlenecks. Here, we overview the new knowledge on the molecular structure of sludge EPS gained over the past few years and discuss the future challenges and opportunities for further advancing EPS study and engineering. The structural and functional features of several macromolecules in sludge EPS and their important structural roles in granular sludge are analyzed in detail. The EPS-pollutant interactions and environment-dependent regulation machinery on EPS production are deciphered. Lastly, the remaining knowledge gaps are identified, and the future research needs that may lead to molecular-level understanding and precise engineering of sludge EPS are highlighted.
Insight into sludge bulking in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant: Quorum sensing, microbial community, and metabolic characteristics

Abstract:Sludge bulking has always been a persistent problem in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) using activated sludge process due to the lack of understanding of its microscopic mechanism. The aim of this study was to investigate the sludge bulking and microbial community behavior in a full-scale WWTP from the perspective of quorum sensing, microbial community, and metagenomic characteristics. This study found that the excessive growth of Candidatus Microthrix was the primary case of sludge bulking occurred from January to March. This overgrowth also resulted in changes of microbial diversity and microbial community structure. Quorum sensing, mediated by N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), played a role in regulating sludge bulking, particularly C6-HSL, while EPS production was mediated by 3OC8-HSL. In addition, the EPS-producing bacteria, AHLs-producing bacteria, and quorum quenching bacteria were also detected in this WWTP. The metagenomic results also showed that bacterial intercellular communication was enhanced to control sludge bulking. The "Two-component system" was responsible for bacterial communication and cooperation to regulate the filamentous bacteria growth, and it was activated by "Oxidative phosphorylation". Meanwhile, "Bacterial secretion system", "Valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis", "Lysine biosynthesis", as well as "Phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis" were related to EPS production. These results provide new insights into the microscopic mechanisms of filamentous sludge bulking in full-scale WWTPs, which will contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms of sludge bulking.

Operation parameters and temperature affected sludge microbial metabolisms: An integrated perspective considering extracellular polymeric substances, soluble microbial products, biomass quantities, and community shifts

Abstract:Effluent soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are significant organics that pose challenges to advanced treatment processes. However, their production, transformation, and decomposition remain unclear due to their heterogeneity and the combined effects of environmental and operational factors. In this work, we investigated the impact of solids retention time (SRT), hydraulic retention time (HRT), and temperature on the changes in effluent SMP, with the consideration of the co-variation of EPS, sludge biomass, and community structures. Results show that longer SRT increased the biomass and relative abundance of functional microorganisms such as Myxococcota, Actinobacteria, and Terrimonas, which hindered EPS-to-SMP turnover and/or facilitated SMP consumption. This resulted in the accumulation of EPS and lower SMP concentrations at the beginning of the SRT adjustment. Both longer and shorter HRT (12 h and 8 h) led to increased SMP concentration, with the shorter HRT nearly doubling it (from approximately 6 to 12 mg/L), especially in terms of its protein and polysaccharide contents. Lower temperatures increased the SMP concentration and the relative abundance of Proteobacteria (including Zoogloea, the most dominant phylum and genus, relative abundance from 15.7 % to 61.1 %) while decreasing fluorescent EPS components, indicating the key role of Proteobacteria in SMP production and fluorescent EPS-to-SMP transformation. The results provided key insights into how changes in operational/environmental parameters impact sludge-EPS-SMP interactions, which could benefit the model development and operational optimization of activated sludge systems. This study also highlighted the important role of the sludge community in the EPS/SMP dynamics.

Abstract:To understand the biofilm formation of biofilm-based processes in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), the interaction mechanisms between extracted extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and three model carrier surfaces (i.e., negatively charged hydrophilic silica, positively charged hydrophilic alumina, and neutral charged hydrophobic polystyrene) were investigated employing a laboratory quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring equipment (QCM-D) and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The data suggested that surface charge and hydrophobicity of both EPS and carriers played significant roles in the interaction behaviors. Moreover, increases in ionic strength could lead to the increasing zeta potential and hydrophobicity of EPS. It is worth noting that long-range DLVO forces dominated the EPS deposition on carriers in lower ionic strength while short-range Lewis acid-base (AB) interaction controlled the adhesion behaviors in higher ionic strength. Besides, the presence of calcium ions contributed to the adhesion behaviors because of strong charge neutralization and hydrophobic effect. Bound EPS (BEPS) showed higher affinity to model carriers than dissolved EPS (DEPS), which conformed to XDLVO prediction rather than classical DLVO model. Overall, these results provide insights into the influence mechanisms of carrier characteristics, ionic strength, calcium ion and EPS components on the interaction between EPS and representative carriers, contributing to predict and regulate biofilm formation in biofilm-based processes.

Abstract:Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) have a significant effect on the dewaterability of waste-activated sludge (WAS); however, the role of polarity distribution (hydrophilic/hydrophobic characteristics) of EPS in sludge dewatering remains unclear. In this study, the relationship between the characteristics of EPS hydrophilic/hydrophobic fractions (composition and molecular structure) and sludge physicochemical properties of 8 different sludge samples was investigated, and a structural equation model was constructed to describe the potential mechanisms of key EPS parameters on sludge dewatering. Experimental results showed that the variation in sludge EPS polarity led to significant changes in the surface hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity and structure compactness, which affected the sludge dewaterability. Specifically, the increase in the content of tyrosine-like proteins, especially those related to hydrophobic acid fraction (HPO-A), played a key role in increasing the surface hydrophobicity of sludge and promoting its dewaterability. In contrast, humic acids in hydrophilic EPS (HPI) could interact with hydrophobic proteins to form dense biopolymers (characterized by high nonprotonated nitrogen (N nonpr ) content), resulting in a more stable and compact structure of the EPS matrix (characterized by low random coil content) and deterioration of sludge dewaterability. This study provides a new perspective for the exploration of the relationship between hydrophilic/hydrophobic biopolymers and sludge dewaterability.

Abstract:A mathematical model that describes strain growth, product formation and medium consumption is used to predict the performance of batch fermentation of Zoogloea sp. GY3, screened from activated sludge. Zoogloea sp. GY3 is useful in synthesizing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). The model is based on the Logistic equation for microorganism growth, the Luedeking-Piret equation for production of PHAs and a Luedeking-Piret-like equation for sucrose consumption, and appears to provide a reasonable description of the behavior of each parameter during the growth phase. The results show that the production of PHAs is growth-associated, and the model predictions are in satisfactory agreement with measured data. (c) 2006 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Abstract BACKGROUND Extracellular polymeric substances ( EPSs ) play an essential role in the performance of biological wastewater treatment. It is necessary to understand the correlation between EPSs and the carbon sources and sludge‐retention time ( SRT ) of the activated‐sludge process to gain efficient operational strategies . RESULTS Polysaccharides ( PSs ) and proteins ( PNs ) were the main constituents in EPSs . The percentage of PSs and PNs in the loosely bound ( LB ‐) EPSs and tightly bound ( TB ‐) EPSs were 18–90% and 18–85%, respectively. The PS / PN ratios in the LB‐EPS and TB‐EPS were in the range 0.38–2.50 and 0.30–2.34, respectively. The contents of LB‐EPSs and TB‐EPSs were both slightly higher in sludge samples cultivated by starch than by those cultivated by glucose. Compared with the sludge samples grown in glucose, the PSs content of the LB‐EPS was higher than in other samples, whereas the PNs content was lower in the LB‐EPS from sludge flocs grown in starch than those grown in glucose. PSs yield of TB‐EPSs was almost equal in the two carbon sources, whereas PNs yield was slightly higher in TB‐EPSs from samples cultured with glucose than with starch . CONCLUSION Laboratory studies were performed to evaluate the effect of carbon sources on EPSs production. The total contents of LB‐EPSs and TB‐EPSs were affected by the kinds of carbon sources. PS and PN in LB‐EPSs and TB‐EPSs were both dependent on carbon sources. In addition, confocal laser scanning microscopy ( CLSM ) observations indicated that microbial cells were cross‐linked by EPS , forming a polymeric network with pores and channels. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry

Tentatively,her plans for investigation include water chemistry trends,taxonomic profiling,extracellular polymer substances analysis,antibiotic resistance testing and active sludge in vitro modelling.Dr. Ramon Lavado is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Baylor University. He is an environmental toxicologist specializing in the biotransformation of contaminants in aquatic wildlife. His research focuses on mechanistic insights into the chemical modifications made by an aquatic organism on a chemical compound and the development of animal alternatives for environmental toxicity studies.

Abstract:Activated sludge is a complex wastewater purification process involving microorganisms, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and organic matter. Although this process has been utilized for over a century, our understanding of the relationships between the components of activated sludge and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) metrics is still evolving. Polysaccharides play significant roles in water retention within loose-bound EPS and soluble EPS, negatively impacting dewaterability and flocculation. Conversely, proteins, primarily found in tightly bound EPS, are sensitive to pH and contribute positively to settleability and flocculation. Studies on eDNA are limited but suggest it has key functions in stabilizing the matrix and interacting with polymers. There is considerable information on how proteins and sugars affect sludge volume index, capillary suction time, and flocculation. Additionally, some studies investigated the biochemistry and molecular biology of activated sludge across temporal, geographical, and laboratory settings. However, there are few studies identifying trends between specific sugars, proteins, bacterial taxa, and WWTP metrics. This review explores the intermolecular forces binding these components together and the roles of proteins, polysaccharides, eDNA, and bacterial taxa in the sludge. It also examines the relationships between these sludge components and settleability, flocculation, dewaterability, type of WWTP, and environmental trends. The review provides a holistic and integrative perspective on EPS in activated sludge systems, emphasizing the significance of different EPS fractions (TB EPS and LB EPS) and their contributions to key WWTP metrics such as dewaterability, settleability, and flocculation.
