Abstract:Direction-of-Arrival (DoA) estimation is essential for wireless communication and radar applications. This paper presents a DoA estimation system by leveraging the space-time-coding metasurface combined with a single receiving antenna and related radio frontend devices. The least mean squares (LMS) adaptive digital filter is applied to adaptively estimate the DoA, which makes the system more robust and reliable. A simulation is performed to demonstrate the proposed DoA estimation system successfully.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach for achieving joint detections of frequency and direction of arrival (DoA) in wideband using a single sensor based on an active metasurface with programmable transmission states of pass and stop. By integrating two p-i-n diodes with the opposite directions into the proposed single-layer and ultrathin meta-atom, the transmission performance with 10 dB difference between the pass and stop states is realized in the bandwidth from 5.9 to 8.8 GHz using field-circuit cosimulations. Accordingly, random receiving patterns are generated by controlling the programmable metasurface composed of switchable meta-atoms. Afterward, the frequency and direction information of sources located in the far field is detected using the modified algorithm of estimating signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRITs) and the compressive sensing method, respectively. A sample of the programmable metasurface is fabricated, and the voltage control system is built up correspondingly. To verify the proposed method’s validity, we conduct three typical categories of experiments: a single source, double sources with different frequencies, and double sources with the same frequency. In all cases, the source information of frequency and direction has been detected previously in measurements within the frequency band from 6.2 to 8.8 GHz.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) imaging based on metamaterial radar system is a cutting-edge technique which elevates the hardware burden in traditional real-aperture radar and synthetic aperture radar (SAR), particularly with the enhanced systematic degree of freedom (DOF) by the emerging technique of digtal coding metasurface. This paper proposes a single-channel real-aperture 3D imaging method based on digital coding metasurface, which is simple and low-cost. The proposed system can generate random radiation field, and the target scene can be obtained by sparse reconstruction as in microwave correlation imaging (MCI) system. In this paper, we first establish the system signal model. Then, we propose the index of the DOF of the radiation field, and propose the accordingly optimization method by optimizing the digital code. And in practical applications, the coupling between metamaterial units introduces additional signal components, which affects the quality of the sparse recovery. In order to solve the coupling problem, we take the coupling coefficients into account in the priori assumptions for all the parameters in the sparse Bayesian learning, and use the maximum posterior probability method to estimate the unknown parameters. Iteratively, the MCI model can be updated with the obtained coupling information, guaranteeing a more accurate reconstruction of the target scene. The simulation results prove the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:A polarization spectral imaging system based on dual dispersion and coded aperture can obtain multidimensional data cubes containing the polarization, spectral, and spatial information of the target through snapshots, and it is a typical detection system in remote sensing. However, because the reconstruction method of the polarization spectrum images of this system is imperfect, most of the images are reconstructed through multiple exposures based on cyclic $S$ -matrix coding, which limits its real-time performance. To resolve this problem, this study proposes a multi-slit encoding method for reconstructing a multidimensional data cube with a single exposure. The method is based on the imaging characteristics of the system, and a multi-slit encoding scheme is designed so that the detector plane can obtain all of the polarization spectral information at one point of the target. A single-exposure experiment shows that the acquisition and processing speed of the system is considerably improved from 1.67 to 15 fps. Furthermore, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the image reconstructed by single-exposure reconstruction reaches 34.37 dB, and the average structural similarity index (SSIM) is 0.912. The proposed method is proven to be effective in promoting the applicability of the spectral imaging system in real-time detection.

Abstract:Polarization angle manipulation has been a vital technic in radar applications. This paper proposes and demonstrates a digital polarization programmable metasurface for continuous polarization angle rotation and radar applications. By coding “0” and “1” elements with the two orthogonally polarized waves having 180° phase difference, the polarization angle of electromagnetic (EM) waves can be continually and arbitrarily manipulated. The designed metasurface adopts a patch-transmission and line-patch structure and integrates two polarization channels to carry out 1-bit coding. By rotating the azimuth angle of the designed metasurface mechanically, a continuous rotation of the polarization angle of the transmitted wave can be achieved. Moreover, the transmission around 9.4 GHz can reach higher than 95%. The metasurface sample with optimized structure parameters has been fabricated and tested, where the measurement agrees well with the simulation results. In addition, a radar detection experiment was implemented with an anisotropic target, demonstrating the practical use of the proposed metasurface for polarimetric radar.

Abstract:Recently, researchers have realized various exotic electromagnetic (EM) control devices using the coded metasurfaces, sparking a broad investigation into the phase or amplitude-based encoding method, as well as their combination, in the field of metasurface design. In this paper, to evaluate the influence of random mutual coupling between the adjacent element on the scattering performance of metasurface, and also to minimize the backward radar cross section (RCS) of metal plate targets, a novel encoding approach combining the reflection phase and element-form has been proposed. During the implementation process, an anisotropic hypocycloid inspired 3-bit digital coding metasurface was designed. It consists of 9 different element-forms, with each capable of providing 7 phase states. Simulation results demonstrate that the random mutual coupling introduced by the proposed elements does not significantly affect the RCS performance of the metasurface. With a good polarization insensitivity property for both linearly and circularly polarized waves, the designed 3-bit digital coding metasurface can achieve more than 20 dB RCS reduction at 10 GHz, while simultaneously transmitting additional information by encoding the element forms. The good consistency between theoretical simulation and sample testing unequivocally validates the precision of the design, this paper may serve as a useful reference for expanding the design methods of metasurfaces.

Abstract:Integrated meta-devices are the need of modern stealth application systems and have recently received a great deal of attention. Most studies have concentrated on the physics and structural design of planar metasurfaces, while conformal design that is suitable for arbitrarily curved surfaces has been rarely discussed. In this study, a conformal polarization-independent 1-bit coding metasurface (CM) is proposed. A fundamental element of a proposed CM is firstly designed which converts the linearly polarized incident electromagnetic (EM) wave into its orthogonal equivalent at 8.53-11.63 and 18.67-22.34 GHz with a polarization-conversion-ratio (PCR) of more than 90%, and enables linear-to-circular polarization conversion from 12.40 to 17.56 GHz. Next, the basic element is rotated by 90° to generate another element with a phase difference of π between them. Both these elements are distributed in an array using a random aperiodic coding sequence to form 1-bit CM for RCS reduction. More than 10 dB RCS reduction for arbitrarily polarized waves has been realized in dual frequency bands ranging 8.75–11.22 and 19.10–21.20 GHz, for planar as well as with conformal structures. A prototype is fabricated, and the experiments show a good agreement with simulated results. Potential applications of the proposed design include reflector antennas, radar, satellite communication, and stealth technology.

Abstract:Modern stealth application systems require integrated meta-devices to operate effectively and have gained significant attention recently. This research paper proposes a 1-bit coding metasurface (CM) design. The fundamental component of the proposed CM is integrated to convert linearly polarized incoming electromagnetic waves into their orthogonal counterpart within frequency bands of 12.37–13.03 GHz and 18.96–32.37 GHz, achieving a polarization conversion ratio exceeding 99%. Furthermore, it enables linear-to-circular polarization conversion from 11.80 to 12.29, 13.17 to 18.44, and 33.33 to 40.35 GHz. A second element is produced by rotating a fundamental component by 90°, introducing a phase difference of π (pi) between them. Both elements are arranged in an array using a random aperiodic coding sequence to create a 1-bit CM for reducing the radar cross-section (RCS). The planar structure achieved over 10 dB RCS reduction for polarized waves in the frequency bands of 13.1–13.8 GHz and 20.4–30.9 GHz. A prototype was fabricated and tested, with the experimental results showing a good agreement with the simulated outcomes. The proposed design holds potential applications in radar systems, reflector antennas, stealth technologies, and satellite communication.

Abstract:The microwave imaging based on inverse scattering strategy holds important promising in the science, engineering, and military applications. Here we present a compressed-sensing (CS) inspired large- aperture computational single-sensor imager using 1-bit programmable coding metasurface for efficient microwave imaging, which is an instance of the coded aperture imaging system. However, unlike a conventional coded aperture imager where elements on random mask are manipulated in the pixel-wised manner, the controllable elements in the proposed scheme are encoded in a column-row-wised manner. As a consequence, this single-sensor imager has a reduced data-acquisition time with improved obtainable temporal and spatial resolutions. Besides, we demonstrate that the proposed computational single-shot imager has a theoretical guarantee on the successful recovery of a sparse or compressible object from its reduced measurements by solving a sparsity-regularized convex optimization problem, which is comparable to that by the conventional pixel-wise coded imaging system. The excellent performance of the proposed imager is validated by both numerical simulations and experiments for the high-resolution microwave imaging.

Broadband Wide-Angle Polarization-Independent Diffusion Using Parabolic-Phase Metasurface

Abstract:Parabolic-phased profile was commonly utilized for concave or convex metalens. Here, we report for the first time using such approach for determinant and polarization independent diffusion of scattering waves in broadband and wide incident angles by engineering parabolic-phased subarrays in coding sequences. For verification, a 1-bit metasurface is designed, across C, X, and Ku bands. Theoretical, numerical and experimental results demonstrate that our approach is very powerful in distributing the scattering energy more uniformly than available approach using non-gradient subarrays. The -7.5 dB fractional bandwidth is obtained as 88% and the diffuse scattering behavior can be preserved up to 60 off normal incidence irrespective of polarizations. Our approach, simple and free of time-consuming optimizations, paves the way for electromagnetic compatibility and stealth applications under bistatic detection.

Abstract:The high-resolution and high-accuracy performance of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms are adversely affected by multiple radiation sources with low SNR. These sources experience significant overlap in the time domain, aliasing in the frequency domain, and a dense distribution in the spatial domain. To address this issue, an innovative signal model for the polarization-sensitive array is proposed, which leverages the spatial polarization characteristics of the electromagnetic wave radiated by the transmitting antenna. Specifically, the proposed signal model focuses on the direction finding of the desired signal under active deception decoys with consistent co-polarization. The influence of one interference signal in the mixed signal can be eliminated by utilizing the time domain characteristics along with oblique projection technology based on this signal model. Subsequently, by using the co-polarization characteristics of the jamming signals, the influence of the other interference signals in the mixed signal can be effectively eliminated. The proposed algorithm estimates the closely spaced signals separately, which significantly reduces the influence of multiple radiation sources and enhances the resolution capability. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed method has a high-resolution performance. Particularly, when employing an angular interval of 5°, the correct resolution probability of the proposed method increases by approximately 5% and 20% for scenarios involving two and three active jamming signals, respectively. The reliability of the proposed signal model and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm are further validated by microwave anechoic chamber experiments and practical environmental tests.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel technique that utilizes randomly rotated elements (RREs) for the cross-polarization and axial ratio (AR) control of a circularly polarized programmable metasurface (CPPMS). We evaluate the CPPMS performance by comparing RREs layout with uniform elements (UEs) layout, and analyze far-field radiation parameters for 50 groups of CPPMS with different RREs layouts. Simulation results demonstrate consistent and improved performance across various RREs layouts, showcasing reduced cross-polarization and enhanced AR beamwidth. To validate these findings, we design a 1-bit CPPMS in Ku-band comprising 20 × 20 elements with the optimal RREs layout, and conduct measurements in an anechoic chamber. The CPPMS prototype achieves high gain (22.34 dBi), low cross-polarization (-20.5 dB), and a narrow 3 dB AR beamwidth (8.93°). Notably, it offers wide-angle beam scanning capabilities of up to ±60°. The gain bandwidth at -3 dB ranges from 14.54 to 16.65 GHz, with a relative bandwidth of 7.3%, while the 3 dB AR bandwidth extends from 14.24 to 16.07 GHz. Consequently, the proposed 1-bit CPPMS exhibits high-performance two-dimensional AR beam scanning, presenting promising applications in satellite communications.

Abstract:Over the past decade, information metasurfaces have made significant progress, breaking down the barrier between the physical world and information science. However, most of the current information metasurfaces are commonly either amplitude-only or phase-only coding, or operated under single linear polarization, extremely limiting their functions and applications. Herein, a broadband and spin-selective amplitude- phase-joint-coding (APJC) information metasurface is proposed, based on which the amplitude and phase of co-polarized reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves under orthogonal circularly polarized (CP) incidence can be simultaneously and independently controlled via tailoring the resistance values of lumped resistors embedded into the meta-particles. In particular, the co-polarized reflection amplitudes and phases of two orthogonal circular polarizations can be separately switched between two states “0-1” and “0° -180°”, and both of which can be encoded in broadband range from 8 to 12GHz. It's expected that the proposed strategy can be applied to dual-channel stealthy technology and might find applications in data encryption, multi-user communications and other integrated systems.
Metasurface Sensing Approach to DOA Estimation of Coherent Signals

Abstract:The DOA estimation method of coherent signals based on periodical coding metasurface is proposed. After periodical coding, the DOA information of incident signals in the time domain is represented as the amplitude and phase information at different frequency points in the frequency domain. Finite time Fourier transform (FTFT) is performed on the received signal and appropriate frequency points are selected to reconstruct the frequency domain snapshot, then pattern smoothing (PS) technique is applied to execute DOA estimation. Compared with conventional DOA estimation methods, the proposed method has two main advantages: one is that only a single receiving channel is needed to avoid the appearance of channel mismatch errors, the other is that it can process with multiple coherent signals. The performance curves of the proposed method are analyzed under different conditions and compared with existing methods. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Recent advancement in digital coding metasurfaces incorporating spatial and temporal modulation has enabled simultaneous control of electromagnetic (EM) waves in both space and frequency domains by manipulating incident EM waves in a transmissive or reflective fashion, resulting in time-reversal asymmetry. Here we show in theory and experiment that a digitally space-time-coded metamaterial (MTM) antenna with spatiotemporal modulation at its unit cell level can be regarded as a radiating counterpart of such digital metasurface, which will enable nonreciprocal EM wave transmission and reception via surface-to-leaky-wave transformation and harmonic frequency generation. Operating in the fast wave (radiation) region, the space-time-coded MTM antenna is tailored in a way such that the propagation constant of each programmable unit cell embedded with varactor diodes can toggle between positive and negative phases, which is done through providing digital sequences by using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Owing to the time-varying coding sequence, harmonic frequencies are generated with different main beam directions. Furthermore, the space time modulation of the digitally coded MTM antenna allows for nonreciprocal transmission and reception of EM waves by breaking the time-reversal symmetry, which may enable many applications, such as simultaneous transmit and receive, unidirectional transmission, radar sensing, and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) beamformer.

Abstract:A fast and accurate technique, which exploits a processing layer based on a pre‐trained multilayer neural network to interpret variations in recorded power levels, is combined with the use of a programmable metasurface reflector for high‐resolution direction‐of‐arrival (DOA) estimation. Experiments are performed to demonstrate a resolution of lower than 1° achieved with the proposed architecture. Due to its growing importance and wide range of applications, direction‐of‐arrival (DOA) estimation has become a major research topic, particularly in the field of communication systems. While traditional DOA estimation methods rely on antenna arrays and complex algorithms, recent progress achieved in the design and implementation of metasurfaces has proved their effectiveness as promising alternatives. This study presents a distinct approach for DOA estimation that combines the use of a programmable metasurface with deep learning. The programmable metasurface together with a radio‐frequency power detector placed at the focal point, acts as a parabolic reflector antenna with an adjustable pointing direction, which scans the azimuth plane in 5° increments to receive the power level of incoming signals. The collected data is then fed into a pre‐trained multilayer neural network to enable DOA estimation with a resolution of lower than 1° without requiring fine‐tuning of the scanning procedure. This approach ensures accurate and fast estimations, paving the way for advanced solutions in detection and localization for various applications.

Abstract:Achieving independent multitasked wavefront control by using an ultrathin plate is a challenge to increase information capacity in integration optics and radar applications. Transmission-reflection-integrated metasurface provides an efficient recipe primarily for multifunctional meta-device, however it is challenging to synergize both linear polarization (LP) and circular polarization (CP) using a single meta-plate. Here, a multichannel full-space coding metasurface composed of interleaved shared-aperture meta-atom is proposed to achieve large information capacity by capsulating judiciously engineered high efficiency triple sub-elements (modes) in four-layer scheme. By rotating dual-gap split ring resonator and varying size of "L" type structure insulating by a metallic ring with electrostatic-analogue shielding effect, both Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) and dynamic phases are independently realized under CP and LP waves, respectively. Such an extraordinary insulating strategy completely suppresses crosstalk among three modes and unprecedentedly increases the capability in yielding kaleidoscopic wavefront control. To verify the significance, a proof-of-concept metadevice is devised and experimentally demonstrated with tri-channel wavefront manipulations, exhibiting reflective dual-vortex beam and Bessel beam for forward and backward CP wave, respectively at high frequency, while transmissive polarization beam splitting for 45°-LP wave at low frequency. Our finding in polarization-direction multiplexing is expected to generate great interest in electromagnetic integration with emerging degree of freedoms.

Design, optimization, and comparative analysis of wide-band polarization conversion along with dual coding sequences for RCS reduction

Abstract:In this paper, a wideband polarization conversion metasurface is designed. Additionally, coding and chessboard metasurfaces are specifically tailored for radar cross-section reduction (RCS). Initially, a compact unit cell demonstrating exceptional polarization conversion performance is introduced, achieving a polarization conversion ratio (PCR) exceeding 90 % across frequencies ranging from 7.9 to 22.7 GHz. The PCR remains effective even when oblique incidence angles of up to 30 ∘ are utilized across this frequency band. Roger RT5880, with a thickness of 0.254 mm, serves as the substrate. An airgap is introduced between the substrate and the ground plane to enhance the polarization conversion bandwidth. This unit cell serves as the fundamental building block for subsequent metasurface configurations. To assess the scalability and effectiveness, a 36 × 36 unit array is assembled, confirming efficient polarization conversion capabilities extending to larger structures. Moreover, a 1-bit coding unit "0" and "1" are formed by the Pancharatnam-Berry phase based on the same-sized meta-atom with 90 ∘ orientations. The robustness and practicality of the design are demonstrated by creating 12 × 12 lattices and evaluating their RCS reduction potential under two distinct scenarios: a chessboard pattern and a coding-based scheme. Notably, its results indicate substantial RCS reduction across a broad frequency spectrum (7.9 to 22.7 GHz) for both configurations. This study demonstrates the wide-ranging applicability of metasurface design, making it a valuable contribution to the fields of microwave engineering, polarization control, and radar stealth technology. Owing to its simplicity, bandwidth, and versatility, this approach offers innovative solutions for diverse real-world applications.

Abstract:For target detection and recognition in a complicated electromagnetic environment, the two-dimensional direction-of-arrival and polarization estimation using a polarization-sensitive array has been receiving increased attention. To efficiently improve the performance of such multi-parameter estimation in practice, this paper proposes a parallel synthetic coprime array with reduced mutual coupling and hardware cost saving and then presents a dimension-reduction compressive sensing-based estimation method. For the proposed array, the polarization types, numbers, and positions of antennas in each subarray are jointly considered to effectively mitigate mutual coupling in the physical array domain and to both enhance degrees of freedom and extend the aperture in the difference coarray domain with the limited physical antennas. By exploring the array configuration, the parameter estimation can be formulated as a block-sparse signal reconstruction problem, and then the one-dimensional sparse reconstruction algorithm is only used once to achieve multi-parameter estimation with automatic pair-matching. The theoretical analysis and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed array and method over the existing techniques.

Abstract:Polarimetry plays an indispensable role in the light-matter interactions. Nevertheless, conventional components developed for polarization measurements suffer from bulky volume and spatial alignment schemes, causing them to reveal limited performance in determining inhomogeneous polarization distributions. Here, we propose a polarization detection scheme based on pixelated all-dielectric metasurfaces using spin-multiplexing coding techniques. The polarization resolving capability of the pixelated metasurface under homogeneous linearly polarized illumination was first evaluated, and the extracted peak coordinates were used to establish an exact functional relationship with the azimuthal angle. Subsequently, the measurement of spatial inhomogeneous polarization was further explored with a focusing matrix assembled from pixelated metasurfaces. The proposed polarization detection strategy can be extended to other spectral bands without discrimination, stimulating potential applications in high-resolution imaging, sensing and data communication.
