Abstract:We consider a planar Coulomb gas in which the external potential is generated by a smeared uniform background of opposite-sign charge on a disk. This model can be seen as a two-dimensional Wigner jellium, not necessarily charge-neutral, and with particles allowed to exist beyond the support of the smeared charge. The full space integrability condition requires a low enough temperature or high enough total smeared charge. This condition does not allow, at the same time, total charge-neutrality and determinantal structure. The model shares similarities with both the complex Ginibre ensemble and the Forrester–Krishnapur spherical ensemble of random matrix theory. In particular, for a certain regime of temperature and total charge, the equilibrium measure is uniform on a disk as in the Ginibre ensemble, while the modulus of the farthest particle has heavy-tailed fluctuations as in the Forrester–Krishnapur spherical ensemble. We also touch upon a higher temperature regime producing a crossover equilibrium measure, as well as a transition to Gumbel edge fluctuations. More results in the same spirit on edge fluctuations are explored by the second author together with Raphael Butez.

An electrodiffusion model for Jaccard's theory in ice

Abstract:Jaccards' theory describes the movement of both ionic and Bjerrum defects in ice. Standard descriptions of the theory are based on a chain model describing the movement of these defects along well-oriented chains of water molecules. However, this model contains several fundamental contradictions and does not result in the exact equations. We present an alternative model based on the electrodiffusion of the defects. The polarisation of the ice specimen favours these defects orientations that diffuse opposite to the electric drift of the same defect. This straightforward approach not only results in the correct equations, it also provides a better understanding of the defects' kinetics.

Abstract:We theoretically study the nonmonotonic (re-entrant) activated dynamics associated with a finite time scale kinetically defined repulsive glass to fluid to attractive glass transition in high volume fraction particle suspensions interacting via strong short range attractive forces. The classic theoretical "projection" approximation that replaces all microscopic forces by a single effective force determined solely by equilibrium pair correlations is revisited based on the "projectionless dynamic theory" (PDT). A hybrid-PDT approximation is formulated that explicitly quantifies how attractive forces induce dynamical constraints, while singular hard core interactions are treated based on the projection approach. Both the effects of interference between repulsive and attractive forces, and structural changes due to attraction-induced bond formation that competes with caging, are included. Combined with the microscopic Elastically Collective Nonlinear Langevin Equation (ECNLE) theory of activated relaxation, the resultant approach appears to properly capture both the re-entrant dynamic crossover behavior and the strong nonmonotonic variation of the activated structural relaxation time with attraction strength and range at very high volume fractions as observed experimentally and in simulations. Testable predictions are made. Major differences compared to both ideal mode coupling theory and ECNLE theory based on the full force projection approximation are identified. Calculations are also performed for smaller time and length scale intracage dynamics relevant to the non-Gaussian parameter based on analyzing the dynamic free energy that controls particle trajectories. Implications of the new theory for thermal glass forming liquids with relatively long range attractive forces are briefly analyzed.
Effective interaction between guest charges immersed in 2D jellium

Abstract:The model under study is an infinite 2D jellium of pointlike particles with elementary charge , interacting via the logarithmic potential and in thermal equilibrium at the inverse temperature . Two cases of the coupling constant are considered: the Debye-H\"uckel limit and the free-fermion point . In the most general formulation, two guest particles, the one with charge (the valence being an arbitrary integer) and the hard core of radius and the pointlike one with elementary charge , are immersed in the bulk of the jellium at distance . Two problems are of interest: the asymptotic large-distance behavior of the excess charge density induced in the jellium and the effective interaction between the guest particles. Technically, the induced charge density and the effective interaction are expressed in terms of multi-particle correlations of the pure (translationally invariant) jellium system. It is shown that the separation form of the induced charge density onto its radial and angle parts, observed previously in the limit , is not reproduced at the coupling . Based on an exact expression for the effective interaction between guest particles at , oppositely ( ) charged guest particles always attract one another while likely ( ) charged guest particles repeal one another up to a certain distance between them and then the mutual attraction takes place up to asymptotically large (finite) distances.

Microscopic Theory of the Magnetic Susceptibility of Insulators

Abstract:We present a general theory of the magnetic susceptibility of insulators that can be extended to treat spatially varying and finite frequency fields. While there are existing results in the literature for the zero frequency response that appear to be in disagreement with each other, we show that the apparent differences between them vanish with the use of various sum rules, and that our result is in agreement with them. Although our strategy is based on the use of Wannier functions, we show that our result can be written in a ``gauge invariant" form involving Bloch functions. We can write it as the sum of terms that involve the diagonal elements of the Berry connection, and this decomposition is particularly useful in considering the limit of isolated molecules. But these contributions can be repackaged to give a form independent of those diagonal elements, which is thus generally more suitable for numerical computation. We consider an h-BN model to demonstrate the practical considerations in building a model and making calculations within this formalism.

Microscopic theory for nonequilibrium correlation functions in dense active fluids

Abstract:One of the key hallmarks of dense active matter in the liquid, supercooled, and solid phases is so-called equal-time velocity correlations. Crucially, these correlations can emerge spontaneously, i.e., they require no explicit alignment interactions, and therefore represent a generic feature of dense active matter. This indicates that for a meaningful comparison or possible mapping between active and passive liquids one not only needs to understand their structural properties, but also the impact of these velocity correlations. This has already prompted several simulation and theoretical studies, though they are mostly focused on athermal systems and thus overlook the effect of translational diffusion. Here we present a fully microscopic method to calculate nonequilibrium correlations in systems of thermal active Brownian particles (ABPs). We use the integration through transients (ITT) formalism together with (active) mode-coupling theory (MCT) and analytically calculate qualitatively consistent static structure factors and active velocity correlations. We complement our theoretical results with simulations of both thermal and athermal ABPs which exemplify the disruptive role that thermal noise has on velocity correlations.

Abstract:We present a derivation from the first principles of the coupled equations of motion of an active self-diffusiophoretic Janus motor and the hydrodynamic densities of its fluid environment that are nonlinearly displaced from equilibrium. The derivation makes use of time-dependent projection operator techniques defined in terms of slowly varying coarse-grained microscopic densities of the fluid species number, total momentum, and energy. The exact equations of motion are simplified using time scale arguments, resulting in Markovian equations for the Janus motor linear and angular velocities with average forces and torques that depend on the fluid densities. For a large colloid, the fluid equations are separated into bulk and interfacial contributions, and the conditions under which the dynamics of the fluid densities can be accurately represented by bulk hydrodynamic equations subject to boundary conditions on the colloid are determined. We show how the results for boundary conditions based on continuum theory can be obtained from the molecular description and provide Green–Kubo expressions for all transport coefficients, including the diffusiophoretic coupling and the slip coefficient.

Abstract:The theory of mechanical response and stress transmission in disordered, jammed solids poses several open questions of how non-periodic networks -- apparently indistinguishable from a snapshot of a fluid -- sustain shear. We present a stress-only theory of emergent elasticity for a non-thermal amorphous assembly of grains in a jammed solid, where each grain is subjected to mechanical constraints of force and torque balance. These grain-level constraints lead to the Gauss's law of an emergent $U(1)$ tensor electromagnetism, which then accounts for the mechanical response of such solids. This formulation of amorphous elasticity has several immediate consequences. The mechanical response maps exactly to the static, dielectric response of this tensorial electromagnetism with the polarizability of the medium mapping to emergent elastic moduli. External forces act as vector electric charges whereas the tensorial magnetic fields are sourced by momentum density. The dynamics in the electric and magnetic sectors, naturally translate into the dynamics of the rigid jammed network and ballistic particle motion respectively. The theoretical predictions for both stress-stress correlations and responses are borne out by the results of numerical simulations of frictionless granular packings in the static limit of the theory in both 2D and 3D.

Abstract:Starting from a general classical model of many interacting particles we present a well defined step by step procedure to derive the continuum-mechanics equations of nonlinear elasticity theory with fluctuations which describe the macroscopic phenomena of a solid crystal. As the relevant variables we specify the coarse-grained densities of the conserved quantities and a properly defined displacement field which describes the local translations, rotations, and deformations. In order to stay within the framework of the conventional density-functional theory we first and mainly consider the isothermal case and omit the effects of heat transport and warming by friction where later we extend our theory to the general case and include these effects. We proceed in two steps. First, we apply the concept of local thermodynamic equilibrium and minimize the free energy functional under the constraints that the macroscopic relevant variables are fixed. As results we obtain the local free energy density and we derive explicit formulas for the elastic constants which are exact within the framework of density-functional theory. Second, we apply the methods of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics with projection-operator techniques. We extend the projection operators in order to include the effects of coarse-graining and the displacement field. As a result we obtain the time-evolution equations for the relevant variables with three kinds of terms on the right-hand sides: reversible, dissipative, and fluctuating terms. We find explicit formulas for the transport coefficients which are exact in the limit of continuum mechanics if the projection operators are properly defined. By construction the theory allows the diffusion of particles in terms of point defects where, however, in a normal crystal this diffusion is suppressed.

Abstract:Within the framework of unified approach we study the Casimir-Lifshitz interaction, the van der Waals friction force and the radiative heat transfer at nonequilibrium conditions, when the interacting bodies are at different temperatures, and they move relative to each other with the arbitrary velocity $V$. The analysis is focused on the surface-surface and surface-particle configuration. Our approach is based on the exact solution of electromagnetic problem about the determination of the fluctuating electromagnetic field in the vacuum gap between two flat parallel surfaces moving relative to each other with the arbitrary velocity $V$. The velocity dependence of the considered phenomena is determined by Doppler shift and can be strong for resonant photon tunneling between surface modes. We show that relativistic effects give rise to a mixing of the contributions from the electromagnetic waves with different polarization to the heat transfer and the interaction forces. We find that these effects are of the order $(V/c)^2$. The limiting case when one of the bodies is sufficiently rarefied gives the heat transfer and the interaction forces between a moving small particle and a surface. We also calculate the friction force acting on a particle moving with an arbitrary velocity relative to the black body radiation.

Abstract:Based on the developed quantum microscopic theory, the interaction of weak electromagnetic radiation with dense ultracold atomic clouds is described in detail. The differential and total cooperative scattering cross sections are calculated for monochromatic radiation as particular examples of application of the general theory. The angular, spectral, and polarization properties of scattered light are determined. The dependence of these quantities on the sample size and concentration of atoms is studied and the influence of collective effects is analyzed.

Microscopic Green's function approach for generalized Dirac Hamiltonians

Abstract:The rising interest in Dirac materials, condensed matter systems where low-energy electronic excitations are described by the relativistic Dirac Hamiltonian, entails a need for microscopic effective models to analytically describe their transport properties. Specifically, for the study of quantum transport, these effective models must take into account the effect of atomic-scale interfaces and the presence of well-defined edges while reproducing the correct band structure. We develop a general method to analytically compute the microscopic Green's function of Dirac materials valid for infinite, semi-infinite, and finite two-dimensional layers with zigzag or armchair edge orientations. We test our method by computing the density of states and scattering probabilities of germanene and some transition metal dichalcogenides, obtaining simple analytical formulas. Our results provide a useful analytical tool for the interpretation of transport experiments on Dirac materials and could be extended to describe additional degrees of freedom like extra layers, superconductivity, etc.

Abstract:Abstract.Homogenization theory is used to calculate the macroscopic dielectric constantfrom the quantum microscopic dielectric function in a periodic medium. The methodcan be used to calculate any macroscopic constitutive relation, but itis illustrated here for the case of electrodynamics of matter. The so-calledcell problem of homogenization theory is solved and an explicit expressionis given for the macroscopic dielectric constant in a form akin to theClausius-Mossotti or Lorentz-Lorenz relation.The validity of this expression is checked by showing that the standard formula is recovered for cubic materials and that the average of the microscopic energy density is the macroscopic one. Finally, the general expression is applied to Blocheigenstates.

Abstract:The existence of entangled quantum states gives extra power to quantum computers over their classical counterparts. Quantum entanglement shows up qualitatively at the level of two qubits. We show that if no entanglement is envolved then whatever one can do with qubits can also be done with classical optical systems. We demonstrate that the one- and the two-bit Deutsch-Jozsa algorithm does not require entanglement and can be mapped onto a classical optical scheme. It is only for three and more input bits that the DJ algorithm requires the implementation of entangling transformations and in these cases it is impossible to implement this algorithm classically.

Abstract:We resolve the long-standing controversy over the surface energy of simple metals: Density functional methods that require uniform-electron-gas input agree with each other at many levels of sophistication, but not with high-level correlated calculations like Fermi Hypernetted Chain and Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) that predict the uniform-gas correlation energy. Here we apply a very high-level correlated approach, the inhomogeneous Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjölander (ISTLS) method, and find that the density functionals are indeed reliable (because the surface energy is "bulk-like"). ISTLS values are close to recently-revised DMC values. Our work also vindicates the previously-disputed use of uniform-gas-based nonlocal kernels in time-dependent density functional theory.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of collective plasmon excitation in metal thin films using the jellium model. The excitation spectra are calculated in the linear response theory and the time-dependent local density approximation. The evolution from surface plasmons at large thickness to the hybridized thin film plasmons at smaller thickness is obtained as functions of atomic layers and electron momenta. The energies of the hybridized plasmons follow qualitatively the classical electrodynamical model at large to intermediate thickness. For ultrathin films with a few atomic layers, these plasmon resonances evolve into intraband and interband transitions at small momenta. The latter results from the quantized electron states normal to the films.
Microscopic theory of spin Nernst effect

Abstract:We present the microscopic theory of the spin Nernst effect, which is a transverse spin current directly induced by a temperature gradient, employing the linear response theory with Luttinger's gravitational potential method. We consider a generic, non-interacting electron system with randomly distributed impurities and evaluate the spin current response to the gravitational potential. Our theory takes into account a contribution of the local equilibrium current modified by Luttinger's gravitational potential and is thus consistent with the thermodynamic principle that thermal responses should vanish. The Ward-Takahashi identities ensure that the spin Nernst current is well-behaved at low temperatures in any order of the random impurity potentials. Furthermore, we microscopically derive the spin-current version of Mott's formula, which associates the spin Nernst coefficient with the spin Hall conductivity. The spin-current version of the Středa formula is also discussed. To demonstrate these findings, the spin Nernst current of three-dimensional Dirac electrons is computed. Our theory is general and can therefore be extended to interacting electron systems, where Mott's formula no longer holds.
