Abstract:Microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) as a novel eco-friendly bioremediation method has been applied tentatively in soil solidification and heavy metal stabilization. In order to deeply study the theoretical knowledge of MICP and its application in environmental engineering, this review summarizes the main mechanisms of MICP, including biosorption and biomineralization. It is proposed innovatively that bacterial cell wall and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) can provide ions binding sites during the process of biomineral nucleation due to negative charges and functional groups. Engineering properties of soil are regulated, such as increase of unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and shear stress, decrease of permeability and improvement of erosion resistance. Supposing the available CaCO 3 content (CCC), UCS can be estimated by two boundary lines with an intersection angle of 2.72°. The great bioremediation capacity of metal cations/anions greatly depends upon carbonate precipitation/coprecipitation. Biotransformation and bioaccumulation of metal poisonousness should be considered as essential mechanisms in bacteria. Finally, according to the authors' knowledge, current deficiencies and future research directions for the technology were pointed out, which might be beneficial to the optimization, application and generalization of MICP technology.

Abstract:Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a technique that uses the metabolic action of microorganisms to produce CO32- which combines with free Ca2+ to form CaCO3 precipitation. It has gained widespread attention in water treatment, aimed with the advantages of simultaneous removal of multiple pollutants, environmental protection, and ecological sustainability. This article reviewed the mechanism of MICP at both intra- and extra-cellular levels. It summarized the parameters affecting the MICP process in terms of bacterial concentration, ambient temperature, etc. The current status of MICP application in practical engineering is discussed. Based on this, the current technical difficulties faced in the use of MICP technology were outlined, and future research directions for MICP technology were highlighted. This review helps to improve the design of existing water treatment facilities for the simultaneous removal of multiple pollutants using the MICP and provides theoretical reference and innovative thinking for related research.

Abstract:Soil contamination, land desertification and concrete cracking can have significant adverse impacts on sustainable human economic and societal development. Cost-effective and environmentally friendly approaches are recommended to resolve these issues. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an innovative, attractive and cost-effective in situ biotechnology with high potential for remediation of polluted or desertified soils/lands and cracked concrete and has attracted widespread attention in recent years. Accordingly, the principles of MICP technology and its applications in the remediation of heavy metal–contaminated and desertified soils and self-healing of concrete were reviewed in this study. The production of carbonate mineral precipitates during the MICP process can effectively reduce the mobility of heavy metals in soils, improve the cohesion of dispersed sands and realize self-healing of cracks in concrete. Moreover, CO 2 can be fixed during MICP, which can facilitate carbon neutrality and contribute to global warming mitigation. Overall, MICP technology exhibits great promise in environmental restoration and construction engineering applications, despite some challenges remaining in its large-scale implementation, such as the substantial impacts of fluctuating environmental factors on microbial activity and MICP efficacy. Several methods, such as the use of natural materials or wastes as nutrient and calcium sources and isolation of bacterial strains with strong resistance to harsh environmental conditions, are employed to improve the remediation performance of MICP. However, more studies on the efficiency enhancement, mechanism exploration and field-scale applications of MICP are needed.

Abstract:Waste generation is a growing concern in many countries across the world, particularly in urban areas with high rates of population growth and industrialization. The increasing amount of waste generated from human activities has led to environmental, economic, and health issues. Improper disposal of waste can result in air and water pollution, land degradation, and the spread of diseases. Waste generation also consumes large amounts of natural resources and energy, leading to the depletion of valuable resources and contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. To address these concerns, there is a need for sustainable waste management practices that reduce waste generation and promote resource recovery and recycling. Amongst these, developing innovative technologies such as Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) in construction materials is an effective approach to transforming waste into valuable and sustainable applications. MICP is an environmentally friendly microbial-chemical technology that applies microorganisms and chemical reagents to biological processes to produce carbonate mineral. This substance can be an energy-efficient, cost-effective, sustainable solution to environmental and engineering challenges. Recent research has shown that waste streams can replace several MICP-chemical components in the cultivation media of microorganisms and cementation reagents (calcium sources and urea). In addition to its effectiveness in treating hazardous waste streams, MICP has been found to be cost-effective and sustainable solution applicable to various waste media. Abstract:The microbial‑induced carbonate precipitation (MICP), as an emerging biomineralization technology mediated by specific bacteria, has been a popular research focus for scientists and engineers through the previous two decades as an interdisciplinary approach. It provides cutting-edge solutions for various engineering problems emerging in the context of frequent and intense human activities. This paper is aimed at reviewing the fundaments and engineering applications of the MICP technology through existing studies, covering realistic need in geotechnical engineering, construction materials, hydraulic engineering, geological engineering, and environmental engineering. It adds a new perspective on the feasibility and difficulty for field practice. Analysis and discussion within different parts are generally carried out based on specific considerations in each field. MICP may bring comprehensive improvement of static and dynamic characteristics of geomaterials, thus enhancing their bearing capacity and resisting liquefication. It helps produce eco-friendly and durable building materials. MICP is a promising and cost-efficient technology in preserving water resources and subsurface fluid leakage. Piping, internal erosion and surface erosion could also be addressed by this technology. MICP has been proved suitable for stabilizing soils and shows promise in dealing with problematic soils like bentonite and expansive soils. It is also envisaged that this technology may be used to mitigate against impacts of geological hazards such as liquefaction associated with earthquakes. Moreover, global environment issues including fugitive dust, contaminated soil and climate change problems are assumed to be palliated or even removed via the positive effects of this technology. Bioaugmentation, biostimulation, and enzymatic approach are three feasible paths for MICP. Decision makers should choose a compatible, efficient and economical way among them and develop an on-site solution based on engineering conditions. To further decrease the cost and energy consumption of the MICP technology, it is reasonable to make full use of industrial by-products or wastes and non-sterilized media. The prospective direction of this technology is to make construction more intelligent without human intervention, such as autogenous healing. To reach this destination, MICP could be coupled with other techniques like encapsulation and ductile fibers. MICP is undoubtfully a mainstream engineering technology for the future, while ecological balance, environmental impact and industrial applicability should still be cautiously treated in its real practice.

Abstract:Improper disposal practices have caused environmental disruptions, possessing by heavy metal ions and radioactive elements in water and soil, where the innovative and sustainable remediation strategies are significantly imperative in last few decades. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) has emerged as a pioneering technology for remediating contaminated soil and water. Generally, MICP employs urease-producing microorganisms to decompose urea (NH2CONH2) into ammonium (NH4+and carbon dioxide (CO2), thereby increasing pH levels and inducing carbonate precipitation (CO32-), and effectively removing remove contaminants. Nonetheless, the intricate mechanism underlying heavy metal mineralization poses a significant challenge, constraining its application in contaminants engineering, particularly in the context of prolonged heavy metal leaching over time and its efficacy in adverse environmental conditions. This review provides a comprehensive idea of recent development of MICP and its application in environmental engineering, examining metabolic pathways, mineral precipitation mechanisms, and environmental factors as well as providing future perspectives for commercial utilization. The use of ureolytic bacteria in MICP demonstrates cost-efficiency, environmental compatibility, and successful pollutant abatement over tradition bioremediation techniques, and bio-synthesis of nanoparticles. limitations such as large-scale application, elevated Ca2+levels in groundwater, and gradual contaminant release need to be overcome. The possible future research directions for MICP technology, emphasizing its potential in conventional remediation, CO2 sequestration, bio-material synthesis, and its role in reducing environmental impact for long-term economic benefits.

Abstract:Based on recent literary sources, this survey discusses the effects of main factors influencing the microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP), including the bacterial species, bacterial concentration, temperature, and pH value. While the MICP technology has been widely adopted to improve rock and soil characteristics, it has excellent development prospects in many other fields. The breakthrough solutions in the MICP technology are improving geotechnical and foundation sand properties, repairing cement-based materials, using mineralized film mulching to protect cultural relics, enhancing properties of tailings, desert control, and heavy metal environmental restoration, etc., are discussed. The experimental findings prove that MICP can improve the strength, stiffness, liquefaction resistance, erosion resistance, and permeability of geotechnical materials and maintain the good permeability and permeability of the soil and improve the growth environment of plants. It is an environment-friendly bioengineering technology. Because microbial mineralization involves a series of biochemical and ionic chemical reactions, there are many reaction steps in the solidification process and the solidification effect of MICP is restricted and affected by many factors. The comprehensive analysis and optimization strategy on MICP industrial implementation should account for micro- and macro-scale effects: the type of bacteria, the concentration of bacteria and cementation solutions, ambient temperature, pH value, and other factors directly affect the crystallization type, morphology, and size of calcium carbonate from the microscopic standpoint, while the macro-scale factors control the rock and soil mineralization. The limitations and prospects of the MICP technology are outlined.

Abstract:Biomineralization processes utilizing microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) have recently shown promise as an effective approach for remediating heavy metal contamination. This article offers a comprehensive review of the latest research on MICP-mediated heavy metal remediation, with a focus on the characteristics of heavy metals in the treated environment, such as copper, cadmium, lead, nickel, zinc, chromium, and mixed heavy metals. The review summarizes experimental results from various heavy metals treated by MICP, including the enrichment and screening of new urease-positive bacteria, the mineral structure of different heavy metal precipitates, and the efficiency of the MICP technology. Recent advancements in the MICP technology regarding heavy metal removal, long-term stability, and practical applications are also discussed. Additionally, the limitations of the technique and existing solutions are reviewed. In addition, it provides insights on future directions for further research and development of the MICP approach for heavy metal remediation, in order to optimize the technique and improve its efficiency. Overall, the review highlights the potential of MICP as a viable method for heavy metal remediation, offering promising results for the removal of a variety of heavy metal contaminants from contaminated environments.

Abstract:Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a promising technology for solidifying sandy soil, ground improvement, repairing concrete cracks, and remediation of polluted land. By solidifying sand into soil capable of growing shrubs, MICP can facilitate peak and neutralization of CO2 emissions because each square meter of shrub can absorb 253.1 grams of CO2 per year. In this paper, based on the critical review of the microbial sources of solidified sandy soil, models used to predict the process of sand solidification and factors controlling the MICP process, current problems in microbial sand solidification are analyzed and future research directions, ideas and suggestions for the further study and application of MICP are provided. The following topics are considered worthy of study: (1) MICP methods for evenly distributing CaCO3 deposit; (2) minimizing NH4+ production during MICP; (3) mixed fermentation and interaction of internal and exogenous urea-producing bacteria; (4) MICP technology for field application under harsh conditions; (5) a hybrid solidification method by combining MICP with traditional sand barrier and chemical sand consolidation; and (6) numerical model to simulate the erosion resistance of sand treated by MICP.

Abstract:Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) uses the metabolic function of microbes to carry out biochemical reactions with other substances in the environment. Through the controlled growth of inorganic minerals, soil particles are cemented and soil pores are filled to solidify the soil and reduce its permeability. Thus, the application of this technology was foreseen in geotechnical engineering and environment (building antiseepage, contaminated soil restoration, slope soil erosion, and sand liquefaction). In this review article, based on current research findings, the urea hydrolysis and the cementation mechanism of MICP are briefly described. The influences of factors such as enzyme activity, cementation solution concentration, pH, temperature, grouting method, and particle size on MICP-treated soil are discussed. The engineering properties of MICP-treated soils are evaluated, for instance, the strength, stiffness, liquefaction resistance, permeability, and durability. The applications of MICP technology in ground improvement, geotechnical seepage control, foundation erosion resistance, and fixation of heavy metals are summarized. Finally, future directions of the development of MICP technology are elucidated to provide a reference and guidance for the promotion of MICP technology in the geotechnical engineering field.

Abstract:Microorganisms carry out numerous biogeochemical processes in the soil. For many in geotechnical engineering, this is a new paradigm. The soil–microorganism interactions have attracted the attention of numerous researchers over the past few years, and the implications and applications have greatly expanded. The development in the field of soil–microorganism interaction, especially microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP), helped to deal with the strength improvement of different types of soil, immobilization of toxic heavy metals in soil and water, disaster risk reduction by soil stabilizing, improving resistance to erosive force, and potential drought mitigation. Incorporating industrial by-products, food, and agricultural waste products during the MICP process makes the technique more sustainable and enhances waste valorization, aligning with the goals of a net-zero and circular economy. Are the alleged advantages of using microbes in traditional geotechnical issues valid? The current review effort aims to create an in-depth understanding of the developments in bio-mediated geotechnics through the urea hydrolysis pathway that has been documented. This evaluation intends to provide a retrospective look at how far research has come and a forward-looking assessment of the opportunities and difficulties in bio-mediated geotechnics. The primary insights from this review indicate that there is insufficient research on determining the optimal dosage of enrichment media and the cementitious solution, less focus is given to the microbial part associated with MICP, and there is a lack of structured methodology for the MICP process.

Abstract:Mining waste represents a global issue due to its potential of generating acidic or alkaline leachate with high concentrations of metals and metalloids (metal(loid)s). Microbial-induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an engineering tool used for remediation. MICP, induced via biological activity, aims to precipitate calcium carbonate (CaCO3) or co-precipitate other metal carbonates (MCO3). MICP is a bio-geochemical remediation method that aims to immobilize or remove metal(loid)s via enzyme, redox, or photosynthetic metabolic pathways. Contaminants are removed directly through immobilization as mineral precipitates (CaCO3 or MCO3), or indirectly (via sorption, complexes, or inclusion into the crystal structure). Further, CaCO3 precipitates deposited on the surface or within the pore spaces of a solid matrix create a clogging effect to reduce contaminant leachate. Experimental research on MICP has shown its promise as a bioremediation technique for mining waste. Additional research is required to evaluate the long-term feasibility and potential by-products of MICP-treated/stabilized waste.

Abstract:Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is a process that has emerged as an alternative and sustainable ground improvement approach in geotechnical and civil engineering for improving the mechanical properties of soil. Urease-producing bacteria accelerate the process of MICP by converting urea into ammonium and carbonates ions. Precipitated CaCO3 acts as a binder to adjacent soil particles, forming larger aggregates that eventually lead to increased soil strength and stiffness. In this review, we explore the importance of MICP to improve the mechanical properties of soil so that it will be more suitable for construction and environmental purposes. Furthermore, different treatment processes and environmental factors are also discussed that affect the production of urease and carbonate precipitation. This method has many features as compared to the conventional methods. For example, it is eco-friendly, improves vegetation, bears the lower operational cost, and is sustainable. MICP is mostly studied for lab-scale and limited to field-scale application. In order to achieve its large-scale application in natural and engineered conditions, we need to encourage collaboration among the microbiologists, geologists, and geotechnical engineers throughout the world.

Abstract:Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an innovative biocementation technique that facilitates the formation of calcium carbonate within a pore network. Initially gaining prominence in the field of geotechnical engineering, MICP has attracted significant attention since its inception (the last three decades) and expanded its reach across various engineering disciplines. Examples include rock mechanics, geology and the oil and gas industry fields through the generation of rock-like specimens, and plugging of fractures, in civil and architectural engineering and material science for concrete repair, protection, and for self-healing of building materials, and in environmental engineering for the study of biomimetic materials. In response to this burgeoning interest, the current paper aims to present a comprehensive review of the main biochemical mechanisms underlying MICP (bacterial ureolytic activity, reactions duration and settling times, and chemical solution properties), their direct relevance to altering hydraulic and mechanical properties, both at the microscale and macroscale responses, and the precipitation mechanisms, particularly in relation to water resources and hydrology applications. Four main categories of relevant applications are identified, namely, the groundwater and soil remediation, the applications related to the generation of a low hydraulic conductivity barrier, those related to gaining cohesion, and the applications related to fluid flow studies in artificially generated porous media. Moreover, this comprehensive review not only aims to identify the existing applications of MICP within hydrological fields but also strives to propose novel and promising applications that can further expand its utility in this domain. Along with the investigation of the potential of MICP to revolutionize water resources and hydrology, it is imperative to delve deeper into its environmental implications to ensure sustainable and ecologically responsible implementation.

Abstract:Biocementation is a recently developed new branch in geotechnical engineering that deals with the application of microbiological activity to improve the engineering properties of soils. One of the most commonly adopted processes to achieve soil biocementation is through microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP). This technique utilizes the metabolic pathways of bacteria to form calcite (CaCO3) that binds the soil particles together, leading to increased soil strength and stiffness. This paper presents a review of the use of MICP for soil improvement and discusses the treatment process including the primary components involved and major affecting factors. Envisioned applications, potential advantages and limitations of MICP for soil improvement are also presented and discussed. Abstract:Until recently, engineers either ignored or neglected the role of microorganisms in geotechnical engineering. The microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) research technique is an innovative and relatively green technology which consists in a biological process through which microorganisms react with minerals (calcium source and cementation reagent) to produce calcite (CaCO3) as a byproduct that modifies and improves the engineering properties of soil. Laboratory and field results obtained from various studies are promising and viable, suggesting potential for various engineering applications. This research technique has also been considered to be useful in many engineering applications such as improvement of construction materials, cementation of porous media, improvement in strength and stiffness of engineering soils, hydraulic control of engineering facilities (waste containment), liquefaction, and erosion mitigation. In this review, the various methods of production of calcium carbonates (calcite), the role played by bacteria, various state-of-the-art procedures that have evolved in this research area, as well as ongoing studies are reported. Furthermore, the use of the MICP technique in remediation of contaminants and other environmental concerns is also presented. Abstract:Cement and chemical materials are common methods for soil reinforcement, but they are limited because of environmental pollution. Therefore, it is very important to find a way of soil reinforcement that can save energy, reduce emissions, and protect the ecological environment. Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) technology is an energy-saving, environmentally friendly, and sustainable reinforcement method. It has a good effect on sand reinforcement as well as on strength improvement, stiffness, erosion resistance, and permeability of sand. This paper, based on key issues such as the mineralization mechanism of microorganisms and the influential factors of MICP, considers that the MICP process involves a series of biochemical reactions. The principle of MICP mineralization was discussed from the perspective of bacterial metabolism from methanogenesis, photosynthesis, sulfate reduction, denitrification, ammonification, and ureolysis. Factors related to the microbial activity (including bacterial strain and medium, bacterial solution concentration, cementation solution and calcium source, temperature and pH, auxiliary additives), factors related to the fabrication of biocemented soils (including grouting methods, number of cycles and retention time), and soil types and properties on MICP cementation effect were analyzed. It has important scientific significance for future-related research and has an important reference value for further optimization of MICP parameters.

Abstract:Biodeposition of minerals is a widespread phenomenon in the biological world and is mediated by bacteria, fungi, protists, and plants. Calcium carbonate is one of those minerals that naturally precipitate as a by-product of microbial metabolic activities. Over recent years, microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) has been proposed as a potent solution to address many environmental and engineering issues. However, for being a viable alternative to conventional techniques as well as being financially and industrially competitive, various challenges need to be overcome. In this review, the detailed metabolic pathways, including ammonification of amino acids, dissimilatory reduction of nitrate, and urea degradation (ureolysis), along with the potent bacteria and the favorable conditions for precipitation of calcium carbonate, are explained. Moreover, this review highlights the potential environmental and engineering applications of MICP, including restoration of stones and concrete, improvement of soil properties, sand consolidation, bioremediation of contaminants, and carbon dioxide sequestration. The key research and development questions necessary for near future large-scale applications of this innovative technology are also discussed.

Inhibition of cadmium releasing from sulfide tailings into the environment by carbonate-mineralized bacteria

Abstract:Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) could be a potential green solution to resolve the issue of heavy metal releasing from the sulfide tailings. However, detailed mechanism of heavy metal-biomineralization in sulfide tailings and impact of procedure parameters on in-situ applications remain unexplored. We systematically investigated the biomineralization process in the column tests for a better understanding of the mechanism and effects on the inhibition of cadmium (Cd) releasing from sulfide tailings. Results revealed that uniform and efficient mineralization in the tailings column occurred under bacterial concentration of 1 x 10(8) cfu mL(-1), bacterial retention time of 3 h, concentration of mineralization solution of 0.25 mol L-1, and flow rate of 1.5 mL min(-1). The leachable Cd concentration decreased 80.7% after 7 mineralization cycles. From a suit of characterizations, bacteria can adhere on the tailings and acted as the nucleation sites to induce the mineralization of Ca and Cd (to (Ca0.67, Cd0.33)CO3 and calcite phase); eventually, tailings particles were coated with the growth of mineralized carbonates, resulting in a reduction of exposure for tailings (especially sulfur). And thus, Cd release was inhibited. Results from this study will provide a fundamental basis for future in-situ applications of MICP to mitigate heavy metal pollutions.
