Abstract:This paper presents a novel resonance-based, adaptable, and flexible inductive wireless power transmission (WPT) link for powering implantable and wearable devices throughout the human body. The proposed design provides a comprehensive solution for wirelessly delivering power, sub-micro to hundreds of milliwatts, to deep-tissue implantable devices (3D space of human body) and surface-level wearable devices (2D surface of human skin) safely and seamlessly. The link comprises a belt-fitted transmitter (Belt-Tx) coil equipped with a power amplifier (PA) and a data demodulator unit, two resonator clusters (to cover upper-body and lower-body), and a receiver (Rx) unit that consists of Rx load and resonator coils, rectifier, microcontroller, and data modulator units for implementing a closed-loop power control (CLPC) mechanism. All coils are tuned at 13.56 MHz, Federal Communications Commission (FCC)-approved industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. Novel customizable configurations of resonators in the clusters, parallel for implantable devices and cross-parallel for wearable devices and vertically oriented implants, ensure uniform power delivered to the load, PDL, enabling natural Tx power localization toward the Rx unit. The proposed design is modeled, simulated, and optimized using ANSYS HFSS software. The Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is calculated under 1.5 W/kg, indicating the design's safety for the human body. The proposed link is implemented, and its performance is characterized. For both the parallel cluster (implant) and cross-parallel cluster (wearable) scenarios, the measured results indicate: 1) an upper-body PDL exceeding 350 mW with a Power Transfer Efficiency (PTE) reaching 25%, and 2) a lower-body PDL surpassing 360 mW with a PTE of up to 20%, while covering up to 92% of the human body.

Abstract:This article presents a coil-coupling-based transcutaneous energy transmission system(TETS) for wirelessly powering an implanted artificial heart. Keeping high efficiency is especially important for TETS, which is usually difficult due to transmission impedance changes in practice, which are commonly caused by power requirement variation for different body movements and coil-couple malposition accompanying skin peristalsis. The TETS introduced in this article is designed based on a class-E power amplifier(E-PA), of which efficiency is over 95% when its load is kept in a certain range. A resonance matching and impedance compressing functions coupled network based on parallel-series capacitors is proposed in the design, to enhance the energy transmission efficiency and capacity of the coil-couple through resonating, and meanwhile compress the changing range of the transmission impedance to meet the load requirements of the E-PA and thus keep the high efficiency of TETS. An analytical model of the designed TETS is built to analyze the effect of the network and also provide bases for following parameters determination. Then, according algorithms are provided to determine the optimal parameters required in the TETS for good performance both in resonance matching and impedance compressing. The design is tested by a series of experiments, which validate that the TETS can transmit a wide range of power with a total efficiency of at least 70% and commonly beyond 80%, even when the coil-couple is seriously malpositioned. The design methodology proposed in this article can be applied to any existing TETS based on E-PA to improve their performance in actual applications.
Galvanic Body-Coupled Powering for Wireless Implanted Neurostimulators

Abstract:Body-coupled powering (BCP) is an innovative wireless power transfer (WPT) technique, recently explored for its potential to deliver power to cutting-edge biomedical implants such as nerve and muscle stimulators. This paper demonstrates the efficient technique of designing WPT systems embedding BCP via galvanic coupling (G-BCP). The G-BCP configuration utilizes two metal circular rings surrounding the body area of interest as the transmitter (TX) electrodes required for galvanic (differential) excitation and a wireless implant as the receiver (RX) equipped with two electrodes for differential power reception accordingly. By focusing on the unique advantages of this approach - such as enhanced targeting accuracy, improved power transfer efficiency (PTE), and favorable tissue penetration characteristics, G-BCP emerges as a superior alternative to traditional WPT methods. A comprehensive analysis is conducted to obtain the optimized device parameters while simultaneously allowing flexible placement of implants at different depths and alignments. To substantiate the proposed design concept, a prototype was simulated in Ansys HFSS, employing a multi-layered tissue medium of 10mm radius and targeting the sciatic nerve of a rat. Impressively, this prototype achieves > 20% PTE at 1.25 GHz, with the implant (radius of RX electrodes = 1 mm) located 2 mm deep inside the tissue model having complex load impedance of Rload = 1000 Ohm and Cload = 5pF. Therefore, the G-BCP-based wirelessly powered microdevices are envisaged to be a key enabler in neural recording and stimulation, specifically for the peripheral nervous system, enhancing therapeutic outcomes and patient experiences.

Abstract:Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems have become increasingly suitable solutions for the electrical powering of advanced multifunctional micro-electronic devices such as those found in current biomedical implants. The design and implementation of high power transfer efficiency WPT systems are, however, challenging. The size of the WPT system, the separation distance between the outside environment and location of the implanted medical device inside the body, the operating frequency and tissue safety due to power dissipation are key parameters to consider in the design of WPT systems. This article provides a systematic review of the wide range of WPT systems that have been investigated over the last two decades to improve overall system performance. The various strategies implemented to transfer wireless power in implantable medical devices (IMDs) were reviewed, which includes capacitive coupling, inductive coupling, magnetic resonance coupling and, more recently, acoustic and optical powering methods. The strengths and limitations of all these techniques are benchmarked against each other and particular emphasis is placed on comparing the implanted receiver size, the WPT distance, power transfer efficiency and tissue safety presented by the resulting systems. Necessary improvements and trends of each WPT techniques are also indicated per specific IMD.

Wireless Power Transfer Approaches for Medical Implants: A Review

Abstract:Wireless power transmission (WPT) is a critical technology that provides an alternative for wireless power and communication with implantable medical devices (IMDs). This article provides a study concentrating on popular WPT techniques for IMDs including inductive coupling, microwave, ultrasound, and hybrid wireless power transmission (HWPT) systems. Moreover, an overview of the major works is analyzed with a comparison of the symmetric and asymmetric design elements, operating frequency, distance, efficiency, and harvested power. In general, with respect to the operating frequency, it is concluded that the ultrasound-based and inductive-based WPTs have a low operating frequency of less than 50 MHz, whereas the microwave-based WPT works at a higher frequency. Moreover, it can be seen that most of the implanted receiver’s dimension is less than 30 mm for all the WPT-based methods. Furthermore, the HWPT system has a larger receiver size compared to the other methods used. In terms of efficiency, the maximum power transfer efficiency is conducted via inductive-based WPT at 95%, compared to the achievable frequencies of 78%, 50%, and 17% for microwave-based, ultrasound-based, and hybrid WPT, respectively. In general, the inductive coupling tactic is mostly employed for transmission of energy to neuro-stimulators, and the ultrasonic method is used for deep-seated implants.
A Multi-Dimensional Analysis of a Novel Approach for Wireless Stimulation.

Abstract:The elimination of integrated batteries in biomedical implants holds great promise for improving health outcomes in patients with implantable devices. However, despite extensive research in wireless power transfer, achieving efficient power transfer and effective operational range have remained a hindering challenge within anatomical constraints.OBJECTIVE:We hereby demonstrate an intravascular wireless and batteryless microscale stimulator, designed for (1) low power dissipation via intermittent transmission and (2) reduced fixation mechanical burden via deployment to the anterior cardiac vein (ACV, ∼3.8 mm in diameter).METHODS:We introduced a unique coil design circumferentially confined to a 3 mm diameter hollow-cylinder that was driven by a novel transmitter-based control architecture with improved power efficiency.RESULTS:We examined wireless capacity using heterogenous bovine tissue, demonstrating >5 V stimulation threshold with up to 20 mm transmitter-receiver displacement and 20° of misalignment. Feasibility for human use was validated using Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation of the cardiac cycle, guided by pacer phantom-integrated Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI).CONCLUSION:This system design thus enabled sufficient wireless power transfer in the face of extensive stimulator miniaturization.SIGNIFICANCE:Our successful feasibility studies demonstrated the capacity for minimally invasive deployment and low-risk fixation.

Abstract:To enhance the efficiency of wireless power transmission for the implanted medical system, a human body surface conformal phase gradient metasurface (PGMS) has been designed in this letter. Based on geometric phase modulation, the PGMS can convert the spherical wave from the transmitting antenna into a plane wave, ensuring the electromagnetic wave perpendicular to human skin. Thereby the power transmission efficiency of the implanted system can be increased obviously. A three-layered cylindrical human tissue model, including skin, fat, and muscle layers, is used to analyze the performance of the PGMS. Simulation results show that the transmission coefficient amplitude of the metasurface element at 1.4 GHz exceeds 0.8. Then the spherical wave of the antenna converted into a plane wave is verified by a 3 × 3 PGMS array when the transmitting antenna is located 50 mm away. Finally, the measurement results have been obtained, which exhibit very good agreement with the simulation. The distinctive advantage of the designed PGMS lies in its flexibility, allowing it to be easily bent and conform to the contoured surfaces of the human body. Additionally, the PGMS offers seamless integration into various medical devices and implants, further enhancing its practicality. This research showcases the potential of the proposed PGMS in significantly enhancing wireless power transmission efficiency for implanted medical systems.

Abstract:With ever-increasing concerns on health and environmental safety, there is a fast-growing interest in new technologies for medical devices and applications. Particularly, wireless power transfer (WPT) technology provides reliable and convenient power charging for implant medical devices without additional surgery. For those WPT medical systems, the width of the human body restricts the charging distance, while the specific absorption rate (SAR) standard limits the intensity of the electromagnetic field. In order to develop a high-efficient charging strategy for medical implants, the key factors of transmission distance, coil structure, resonant frequency, etc. are paid special attention. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of near-field WPT technologies in medical devices is presented and discussed. Also, future development is discussed for the prediction of different devices when embedded in various locations of the human body. Moreover, the key issues including power transfer efficiency and output power are addressed and analyzed. All concerning characteristics of WPT links for medical usage are elaborated and discussed. Thus, this review provides an in-depth investigation and the whole map for WPT technologies applied in medical applications.

Abstract:In this article, we present a novel approach for designing a rotation insensitive, biocompatible, circular polarization-based efficient wireless power transfer (WPT) system for implantable medical devices (IMDs) in the radiative near-field region. Initially, a wideband, biocompatible, flexible circular polarized (CP) slot antenna is designed inside a single-layer skin tissue model to use as a receiving (Rx) element. To create the WPT link, a simple square patch antenna with the truncated corners is constructed to utilize as a transmitting (Tx) element. Furthermore, a polarization conversion-based metamaterial (MTM) structure is built particularly to improve the power transfer efficiency (PTE) of the proposed WPT system. Also, to show the versatility, the performance analysis of the proposed MTM integrated WPT system is conducted inside the human torso and head model. Moreover, a detailed study of the specific absorption rate (SAR) is accomplished regarding the safety of the human body in the light of IEEE regulation. Finally, the prototypes of the proposed WPT system are fabricated and experimentally verified in skin-mimicking gel and minced pork. The experimental result confirms the feasibility of the proposed concept by enhancing the PTE of the presented system by the usage of the MTM slab.

Abstract:Miniature bioelectronic implants promise revolutionary therapies for cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a significant method for miniaturization, eliminating the need for bulky batteries in today's devices. Despite successful demonstrations of millimetric battery-free implants in animal models, the robustness and efficiency of WPT are known to degrade significantly under misalignment incurred by body movements, respiration, heart beating, and limited control of implant orientation during surgery. This article presents an omnidirectional WPT platform for millimetric bioelectronic implants, employing the emerging magnetoelectric (ME) WPT modality, and "magnetic field steering" technique based on multiple transmitter (TX) coils. To accurately sense the weak coupling in a miniature implant and adaptively control the multicoil TX array in a closed loop, we develop an active echo (AE) scheme using a tiny coil on the implant. Our prototype comprises a fully integrated 14.2 mm3 implantable stimulator embedding a custom low-power system-on-chip (SoC) powered by an ME film, a TX with a custom three-channel AE RX chip, and a multicoil TX array with mutual inductance cancellation. The AE RX achieves −161 dBm/Hz input-referred noise with 64 dB gain tuning range to reliably sense the AE signal, and offers fast polarity detection for driver control. AE simultaneously enhances the robustness, efficiency, and charging range of ME WPT. Under 90° rotation from the ideal position, our omnidirectional WPT system achieves higher power transfer efficiency (PTE) than a single-coil baseline. The tracking error of AE negligibly degrades the PTE by less than 2% from using ideal control.

Abstract:This article presents a novel approach to improve the efficiency of a radiative near‐field wireless power transfer (WPT) system by using metasurface. The WPT system is designed particularly for implantable applications, which operate at the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) 2.40–2.48 GHz band. To construct the WPT link, a patch antenna is used as the transmitting element whereas a small planar loop antenna is considered as the receiving element. The receiving antenna is implanted under the skin tissue model operating at 2.45 GHz. The metasurface with a high refractive index is placed above the surface of the skin layer to improve the power transfer efficiency. Regarding the motion of the human body, different misalignment tolerances between the transmitter and the implant receiver are discussed. Also, the effect in the change of the skin property and placement depth of the Rx antenna inside the skin tissue model is studied. Furthermore, the study of specific absorption rate for the proposed configuration is performed. Finally, the proposed WPT system is designed and experimentally verified with and without metasurface. The experimental result confirms a significant amount of improvement in power transfer efficiency due to the integration of metasurface.
Optimization of the Coupling Coefficient of the Inductive Link for Wireless Power Transfer to Biomedical Implants

Abstract:This work focuses on the optimization of coupling coefficient (k) of the inductive link for the wireless power transfer (WPT) system to be used in implantable medical devices (IMDs) of centimeter size. The analytic expression of k is presented. Simulations are conducted by using the high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS). Analytic results are verified with simulations. The receiving (Rx) coil is implanted in the body and set as a circular coil with a radius of 5 millimeters for reducing the risk of tissue inflammation. The inductive link under misalignment scenarios is optimized to improve k. When the distance between the transmitting (Tx) and Rx coils is fixed at 20 mm, it is found that, to maximize k, the Tx coil in a planar spiral configuration with an average radius of 20 mm is preferred, and the Rx coil in a solenoid configuration with a wire pitch of 0.7 mm is recommended. Based on these optimization results, an inductive link WPT system is proposed; the coupling coefficient k, the power transfer efficiency (PTE), and the maximum power delivered to the load (MPDL) of the system are obtained with both simulation and experiment. Different media of air, muscle, and bone separating the Tx and Rx coils are tested. For the muscle (bone) medium, PTE is 44.14% (43.07%) and MPDL is 145.38 mW (128.13 mW), respectively.

Abstract:This paper outlines a design approach for biomedical wireless power transfer systems with a focus on three-coil inductive links for neonatal intensive care unit applications. The relevant literature has been explored to support the design approach, equations, simulation results, and the process of experimental analysis. The paper begins with a brief overview of various power amplifier classes, followed by an in-depth examination of the most common power amplifiers used in biomedical wireless power transfer systems. Among the traditional linear and switching amplifier classes, class-D and class-E switching amplifiers are highlighted for their enhanced efficiency and straightforward implementation in biomedical contexts. The impact of load variation on these systems is also discussed. This paper then explores the basic concepts and essential equations governing inductive links, comparing two-coil and multi-coil configurations. In the following, the paper discusses foundational coil parameters and provides theoretical and experimental analysis of both two-coil and multi-coil inductive links through step-by-step measurement techniques using lab equipment and addressing the relevant challenges. Finally, a case study for neonatal intensive care unit applications is presented, showcasing a wireless power transfer system operating at 13.56 MHz for powering a wearable device on a patient lying on a mattress. An inductive link with a transmitter coil embedded in a mattress is designed to supply power to a load at distances ranging from 4 cm to 12 cm, simulating the mattress-to-chest distance of an infant. the experimental results of a three-coil inductive link equipped with a Class-E power amplifier are reported, demonstrating power transfer efficiency ranging from 75% to 25% and power delivery to a 500 Ω-load varying from 340 mW to 25 mW over various distances.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of a resonant system for in vitro studies to emulate the exposure of a monolayer of cells to a wireless power transfer system operating at 13.56 MHz. The design procedure targets a system, which maximizes the specific absorption rate (SAR) uniformity on the plane where the layer is cultured, as well as SAR efficiency (defined as SAR over the input power), within the size constraints of a standard incubator. Three resonant wireless power transfer systems with different commonly used loop/coil geometries (cylindrical with circular and square cross-sections and annular) were compared with assess the configuration maximizing the considered design criteria. The system performance in terms of reflection and transmission coefficients, as well as generated E- and H-fields, was characterized numerically and experimentally inside the incubator. Moreover, SAR was computed at the monolayer level. The system equipped with cylindrical coils with square cross-sections led to a high electromagnetic field uniformity in in vitro biological samples. In particular, the uniformities in E and SAR at the layer level were within 7.9% and 5.5%, respectively. This was achieved with the variation in H below the usually considered ±5% limit. © 2020 Bioelectromagnetics Society.

Abstract:Compact and safe charging platforms have been one of the main goals in wireless power transfer (WPT) research and development. Here, we propose a compact hybrid metasurface-inspired resonator with a uniform magnetic field distribution for WPT. It consists of two orthogonally oriented layers of parallel printed wires with high-permittivity dielectric pads between them. This design allows us to spatially separate electric and magnetic fields, which provide high WPT efficiency and electromagnetic safety simultaneously. The prototype with 28 cm 28 cm working area with uniform magnetic field was fabricated and experimentally studied. The measured coefficient of variation of the magnetic field in the working area of the resonator is 6.8. The maximum achievable WPT efficiency reaches 70 over the working area. The numerically assessed specific absorption rate in human tissues placed on the proposed structure is 11 mW/kg, which is 30 times lower than on a conventional planar spiral coil. Our results pave the way to compact and safe WPT platforms for one-to-many charging.

Abstract:Three-coil inductive power transfer is the state-of-the-art solution to power multiple miniaturised neural implants. However, the maximum delivered power is limited by the efficiency of the powering link and safety constrains. Here we propose a frequency-switching inductive link, where the passive resonator normally used in a three-coil link is replaced by an active resonator. It receives power from the external transmitter via a two-coil inductive link at the low frequency of 13.56 MHz. Then, it switches the operating frequency to the higher frequency of 433.92 MHz through a dedicated circuitry. Last, it transmits power to 1024 miniaturised implants via a three-coil inductive link using an array of 37 focusing resonators for a brain coverage of 163.84 mm <sup>2</sup>. Our simulations reported a power transfer efficiency of 0.013% and a maximum power delivered to the load of 1970 μ W under safety-constrains, which are respectively two orders of magnitude and more than six decades higher compared to an equivalent passive three-coil link. Hybrid Coils-Based Wireless Power Transfer for Intelligent Sensors

Abstract:Most wearable intelligent biomedical sensors are battery-powered. The batteries are large and relatively heavy, adding to the volume of wearable sensors, especially when implanted. In addition, the batteries have limited capacity, requiring periodic charging, as well as a limited life, requiring potentially invasive replacement. This paper aims to design and implement a prototype energy harvesting technique based on wireless power transfer/magnetic resonator coupling (WPT/MRC) to overcome the battery power problem by supplying adequate power for a heart rate sensor. We optimized transfer power and efficiency at different distances between transmitter and receiver coils. The proposed MRC consists of three units: power, measurement, and monitoring. The power unit included transmitter and receiver coils. The measurement unit consisted of an Arduino Nano microcontroller, a heart rate sensor, and used the nRF24L01 wireless protocol. The experimental monitoring unit was supported by a laptop to monitor the heart rate measurement in real-time. Three coil topologies: spiral-spiral, spider-spider, and spiral-spider were implemented for testing. These topologies were examined to explore which would be the best for the application by providing the highest transfer power and efficiency. The spiral-spider topology achieved the highest transfer power and efficiency with 10 W at 87%, respectively over a 5 cm air gap between transmitter and receiver coils when a 200 Ω resistive load was considered. Whereas, the spider-spider topology accomplished 7 W and 93% transfer power and efficiency at the same airgap and resistive load. The proposed topologies were superior to previous studies in terms of transfer power, efficiency and distance.
Maze-Based Scalable Wireless Power Transmission Experimental Arena for Freely Moving Small Animals Applications

Abstract:This paper presents an innovative T/Y-maze-based wireless power transmission (WPT) system designed to monitor spatial reference memory and learning behavior in freely moving rats. The system facilitates uninterrupted optical/electrical stimulation and neural recording experiments through the integration of wireless headstages or implants in T/Y maze setups. Utilizing an array of resonators covering the entire underneath of the mazes, the wireless platform ensures scalability with various configurations. The array is designed to ensure a natural localization mechanism to localize the Tx power toward the location of the Rx coil. The system is analyzed and modeled using ANSYS HFSS software to optimize design. The primary goal was to achieve uniform wireless power delivery throughout the mazes through a comparative study of different transmitter (Tx) array configurations, such as float, series, and parallel resonators. The calculated Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) in rat tissue model equals 1.7 W/kg at the power carrier frequency of 13.56 MHz. A prototype of the proposed maze-based WPT design, featuring 8 Tx resonators, a Tx coil and power amplifier, and a headstage power harvesting unit, is successfully implemented and its performance characterized for all three resonator configurations. The implemented T maze-based WPT system has a total length of 128 cm. In the overlapping Tx resonators configuration, a homogeneity of 94% is achieved for the measured power transfer efficiency at over 30%, while continuously delivering over 60 mW for series configuration.

Abstract:Data collection and analysis from multiple implant nodes in humans can provide targeted medicine and treatment strategies that can prevent many chronic diseases. This data can be collected for a long time and processed using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in a medical network for early detection and prevention of diseases. Additionally, machine learning (ML) algorithms can be applied for the analysis of big data for health monitoring of the population. Wireless powering, sensing, and communication are essential parts of future wireless implants that aim to achieve the aforementioned goals. In this paper, we present the technical development of a wireless implant that is powered by radio frequency (RF) at 401 MHz, with the sensor data being communicated to an on-body reader. The implant communication is based on two simultaneous wireless links: RF backscatter for implant-to-on-body communication and a galvanic link for intra-body implant-to-implant connectivity. It is demonstrated that RF powering, using the proposed compact antennas, can provide an efficient and integrable system for powering up to an 8 cm depth inside body tissues. Furthermore, the same antennas are utilized for backscatter and galvanic communication.
