Abstract:Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological diseases, and video EEG is the most commonly used examination method for epilepsy diagnosis. However, since the video EEG examination lasts for hours, the escort has a heavy burden, and the large amount of video EEG data needs to be visually checked by the doctor. The real-time detection of epileptic seizures can reduce the stress of the escort and provide a mark for the doctor to check the EEG efficiently. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network with specified signal representation for real-time seizure detection and add a smoothing filter on the model output to enhance performance. First, we compare the performance of real-time epileptic seizure detection model under different signal representations. Then we use the best signal representation for further analysis in real-time scenario. In the experiment, the EEG data of 9 patients in the CHB-MIT public data set was used, and a patient-specific neural network was trained for each individual. The recall was 97%, the false alarm was 0.219 times per hour, and the latency time was 3.4s for real-time seizure event detection. The results show that this method can realize the real-time detection of epileptic seizures, which is of great significance to the subsequent system design combined with actual scenes.
Automatic Epileptic Seizures Joint Detection Algorithm Based on Improved Multi-Domain Feature of cEEG and Spike Feature of aEEG.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a disease in which patients undergo seizures caused by brain functionality disorder. Clinically, it is usually diagnosed by experienced clinicians according to continuous electroencephalography (cEEG), which is time consuming even for experienced doctors. Meanwhile, amplitude integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) has shown potential to detect epileptic seizures. Therefore, the paper proposes a hybrid seizure detection algorithm by combining cEEG-based seizure detection algorithm and aEEG-based seizure detection algorithm to detect seizures. In cEEG-based seizure detection algorithm, cEEG signals are divided into 5 s epoch with 4 s overlap and multi-domain features are extracted from each epoch. Then random forest classification is applied to do seizure detection. In aEEG-based seizure detection algorithm, morphological filter is applied to do spike detection and determine whether there are seizures after transforming the cEEG signals into aEEG signals. In order to evaluate the generality of the proposed method, experiments are performed on two independent datasets, including a publicly available EEG dataset (CHB-MIT) and an epileptic dataset collected by using the EEG device developed by the Hangzhou Neuro Science and Technology Co., Ltd. In the CHB-MIT dataset, the accuracy (AC), specificity (SP), sensitivity based on the event (SE), and false positive ratio based on the event (FPRE) obtained by the hybrid method are 99.36%, 82.98%, 99.41%, and 0.57 times/h, respectively. In the dataset we collected, the AC, SP, SE, and FPRE obtained by the hybrid method are 99.23%, 89.47%, 99.23%, and 0.71 times/h, respectively. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is competitive with state-of-the-art methods and results. Furthermore, basing on the hybrid method, this paper has developed a portable automatic seizure detection system, which can reduce the burden of clinicians in processing the large amounts of cEEG signals by detecting seizure automatically.

Abstract:Introduction: Long-term electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring is advised to patients with refractory epilepsy who have a failure of anti-seizure medication and therapy. However, its real-life application is limited mainly due to the use of multiple EEG channels. We proposed a patient-specific deep learning-based single-channel seizure detection approach using the long-term scalp EEG recordings of the Children's Hospital Boston-Massachusetts Institute of Technology (CHB-MIT) dataset, in conjunction with neurologists' confirmation of spatial seizure characteristics of individual patients. Methods: We constructed 18-, 4-, and single-channel seizure detectors for 13 patients. Neurologists selected a specific channel among four channels, two close to the behind-the-ear and two at the forehead for each patient, after reviewing the patient's distinctive seizure locations with seizure re-annotation. Results: Our multi- and single-channel detectors achieved an average sensitivity of 97.05–100%, false alarm rate of 0.22–0.40/h, and latency of 2.1–3.4 s for identification of seizures in continuous EEG recordings. The results demonstrated that seizure detection performance of our single-channel approach was comparable to that of our multi-channel ones. Discussion: We suggest that our single-channel approach in conjunction with clinical designation of the most prominent seizure locations has a high potential for wearable seizure detection on long-term EEG recordings for patients with refractory epilepsy.

Abstract:An encephalogram (EEG) is a commonly used ancillary test to aide in the diagnosis of epilepsy. The EEG signal contains information about the electrical activity of the brain. Traditionally, neurologists employ direct visual inspection to identify epileptiform abnormalities. This technique can be time-consuming, limited by technical artifact, provides variable results secondary to reader expertise level, and is limited in identifying abnormalities. Therefore, it is essential to develop a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system to automatically distinguish the class of these EEG signals using machine learning techniques. This is the first study to employ the convolutional neural network (CNN) for analysis of EEG signals. In this work, a 13-layer deep convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm is implemented to detect normal, preictal, and seizure classes. The proposed technique achieved an accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity of 88.67%, 90.00% and 95.00%, respectively.
Autologous Fat Graft in Scar Treatment

Abstract:Introduction Regenerative medicine is an emerging and rapidly evolving field of research and therapy, thanks to new discoveries on stem cells. Adipose tissue is a connective tissue which contains a reserve of mesenchymal stem cells. Clinical improvements in trophic characteristics of teguments after autologous fat graft are well described in literature. In this paper, we present our observation after 6 years of autologous fat graft experience in scar remodeling. Materials and Methods All patients recruited had retractile and painful scars compromising the normal daily activity/mobility of the joint involved. We performed surgical procedure with Coleman technique. In 20 patients, we performed a clinical assessment using Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) and Durometer measurements. Results In all treated scars, a qualitative improvement was shown both from an aesthetic and functional point of view. Most importantly, reduction or complete resolution of pain and increases in scar elasticity were objectively assessable in all cases. In patients studied using Durometer and POSAS score, areas treated with autologous fat graft showed statistically significant reduction in hardness measurements in comparison with areas infiltrated with saline solution. POSAS scores showed a statistically significant reduction of a great deal of POSAS parameters as a result of an improvement of both clinical evaluation and patient perception. Conclusions Injection of processed autologous fat seems to be a promising and effective therapeutic approach for scars with different origin such as burns and other trauma scars, and post-surgery and radiotherapy outcomes. In general, we can affirm that treated areas regain characteristics similar to normal skin, which are clinically objectivable, leading not only to aesthetic but also functional results.

Abstract:Automatic seizure detection is of great significance for epilepsy diagnosis and alleviating the massive burden caused by manual inspection of long-term EEG. At present, most seizure detection methods are highly patient-dependent and have poor generalization performance. In this study, a novel patient-independent approach is proposed to effectively detect seizure onsets. First, the multi-channel EEG recordings are preprocessed by wavelet decomposition. Then, the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with proper depth works as an EEG feature extractor. Next, the obtained features are fed into a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network to further capture the temporal variation characteristics. Finally, aiming to reduce the false detection rate (FDR) and improve the sensitivity, the postprocessing, including smoothing and collar, is performed on the outputs of the model. During the training stage, a novel channel perturbation technique is introduced to enhance the model generalization ability. The proposed approach is comprehensively evaluated on the CHB-MIT public scalp EEG database as well as a more challenging SH-SDU scalp EEG database we collected. Segment-based average accuracies of 97.51% and 93.70%, event-based average sensitivities of 86.51% and 89.89%, and average AUC-ROC of 90.82% and 90.75% are yielded on the CHB-MIT database and SH-SDU database, respectively.

Energy-Efficient Seizure Detection Suitable for low-power Applications

Abstract:Epilepsy is the most common, chronic, neurological disease worldwide and is typically accompanied by reoccurring seizures. Neuro implants can be used for effective treatment by suppressing an upcoming seizure upon detection. Due to the restricted size and limited battery lifetime of those medical devices, the employed approach also needs to be limited in size and have low energy requirements. We present an energy-efficient seizure detection approach involving a TC-ResNet and time-series analysis which is suitable for low-power edge devices. The presented approach allows for accurate seizure detection without preceding feature extraction while considering the stringent hardware requirements of neural implants. The approach is validated using the CHB-MIT Scalp EEG Database with a 32-bit floating point model and a hardware suitable 4-bit fixed point model. The presented method achieves an accuracy of 95.28%, a sensitivity of 92.34% and an AUC score of 0.9384 on this dataset with 4-bit fixed point representation. Furthermore, the power consumption of the model is measured with the low-power AI accelerator UltraTrail, which only requires 495 nW on average. Due to this low-power consumption this classification approach is suitable for real-time seizure detection on low-power wearable devices such as neural implants.

Abstract:Automatic seizure detection using electroen-cephalogram (EEG) can significantly expedite the diagnosis of epilepsy, thereby facilitating prompt treatment and reducing the risk of future seizures and associated complications. While most existing EEG-based epilepsy detection studies employ deep learning models, they often ignore the chronological relationships between different EEG channels. To tackle this limitation, a novel automatic epilepsy detection method is proposed, which leverages path signature and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) neural network with an attention mechanism. The path signature algorithm is used to extract discriminative features for capturing the dynamic dependencies between different channels of EEG, while Bi-LSTM with attention further analyzes the inherent temporal dependencies hidden in EEG signal features. Our method is evaluated on two public EEG databases with different sizes (CHB-MIT and TUEP) and a private database from a local hospital. Two experimental settings are used, i.e., five-fold cross-validation and leave-one-out cross-validation. Experimental results show that our method achieves 99.09%, 95.60%, and 99.87% average accuracies on CHB-MIT, TUEP with 250Hz, and TUEP with 256Hz, respectively. On the private dataset, our method also achieves 99.40% average accuracy, which outperforms other methods. Furthermore, our method exhibits robustness in patients, as demonstrated by the evaluation results of cross-patient experiments.

Abstract:Due to individual variability of electroencephalogram (EEG) data and a severe imbalance in the proportion of acquired detection samples, the development of automatic epilepsy detection technology has been constrained. This paper presents an epilepsy detection method based on Temporal Convolutional Network-Long Short Term Memory (TCN-LSTM). First, raw EEG signals are subjected to initial filtering and balancing pre-processing. Subsequently, the TCN-LSTM network, known for its excellent handling of time-series data, is used for feature extraction and classification of EEG signals. In addition, the Squeeze-and-Excitation Networks (SENet) channel attention mechanism is incorporated, which assigns different weights to extracted features based on different leads, emphasizing channels with higher weights, thereby enhancing detection efficiency. This approach avoids the complex process of manual feature extraction. Experimental testing on a dataset from Boston Children's Hospital yielded results of 84.18% sensitivity, 92.84% specificity, and 92.86% accuracy. The proposed model is suitable for an automated epilepsy detection system.

Seizure Detection Based on Lightweight Inverted Residual Attention Network

Abstract:Timely and accurately seizure detection is of great importance for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy patients. Existing seizure detection models are often complex and time-consuming, highlighting the urgent need for lightweight seizure detection. Additionally, existing methods often neglect the key characteristic channels and spatial regions of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. To solve these issues, we propose a lightweight EEG-based seizure detection model named lightweight inverted residual attention network (LRAN). Specifically, we employ a four-stage inverted residual mobile block (iRMB) to effectively extract the hierarchical features from EEG. The convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is introduced to make the model focus on important feature channels and spatial information, thereby enhancing the discrimination of the learned features. Finally, convolution operations are used to capture local information and spatial relationships between features. We conduct intra-subject and inter-subject experiments on a publicly available dataset. Intra-subject experiments obtain 99.25% accuracy in segment-based detection and 0.36/h false detection rate (FDR) in event-based detection, respectively. Inter-subject experiments obtain 84.32% accuracy. Both sets of experiments maintain high classification accuracy with a low number of parameters, where the multiply accumulate operations (MACs) are 25.86[Formula: see text]M and the number of parameters is 0.57[Formula: see text]M.

Abstract:EEG is commonly used to accommodate information about the electrical activity of the brain, an automated epilepsy seizure detection and prediction technique. As the rapid innovation in the field of healthcare increases, various biomedical signals namely, electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), and electromyogram (EMG) play a crucial role in the measurement of various diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and brain disorders. Also, detection of epilepsy by an expert mainly neurologists, from EEG requires a lot of time as large amount of data is generated by the signals. We processed EEG database of CHB-MIT (scalp EEG), to find if our model could outperform the state-of-the-art models. The present study is mainly composed of four parts. In the first part, multiscale principal component analysis has been applied for EEG de-noising. In the second part, Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) is used to decompose EEG signal into a set of amplitude modulated and frequency modulated components. In the third part, features such as standard deviation, kurtosis, skewness, mean, power of coefficients, ratio of power of coefficients have been extracted from various mode functions and these six features have been categorized into three subsets. In the last stage, these subset of features are employed as inputs to 10 machine learning classifier for classification between non-seizure and seizure EEG signals. The simulation results show that our model achieved an accuracy of 70.30% for KNN, 95.47% for Random Forest, 92.56% for Decision Trees, 91.22% for Support Vector Machine, 84.12% for Multilayer Perceptron, 84.12% for Naive Bayes, and 88.92% for Ensemble Classifiers. Our model achieved maximum accuracy of 95.47% and sensitivity of 96.34% for Random Forest in ictal versus inter-ictal EEG for CHB-MIT database which is better when compared to existing state-of-the-art methods.
Deep Learning-based Real-Time Seizure Detection and Multi-Seizure Classification on Pediatric EEG

Abstract:Background and Objective: To develop a reliable and accurate seizure detection method using deep learning models capable of detecting and classifying multiple seizure types in real time. Methods: We retrospectively collected electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, which were acquired as part of routine diagnostic tests for patients aged 3 months to <=18 years of age with childhood absence epilepsy, infantile epileptic spasms syndrome, other generalized epilepsy, and focal epilepsy, between January 2018 and December 2022 at Severance Children's Hospital. We used EEG recordings from both seizure and non-seizure patients, which were downsampled to 200 Hz for real-time seizure detection and multi-classification. Results: Of the 199 patients (620 seizures), 49 (297 seizures) belonged to the childhood absence epilepsy group, 16 (200 seizures) to the infantile epileptic spasms syndrome group, 14 (76 seizures) to other generalized epilepsy group, 19 (47 seizures) to focal epilepsy group, and 101 to the normal group. The results showed the best overall performance of AUROC 0.98 and APROC of 0.73 with ResNet with Long-Short Term Network and a 12 s sliding window on real-time seizure detection task. Furthermore, ResNet50 without the frequency bands feature extractor showed the best overall weighted performance for multi-class seizure detection with 0.99 AUROC and 0.99 APPRC. Discussion: Our approach proposes robust methods which include EEG preprocessing strategy with real-time detection/classification of multiple seizures, which helps monitor pediatric seizure. The result shows that real-time seizure detection can be effectively applied to real-world clinical datasets from a pediatric epilepsy unit with realistic performance and speed.

Epileptic-Net: An Improved Epileptic Seizure Detection System Using Dense Convolutional Block with Attention Network from EEG

Abstract:Epilepsy is a complex neurological condition that affects a large number of people worldwide. Electroencephalography (EEG) measures the electrical activity of the brain and is widely used in epilepsy diagnosis, but it usually requires manual inspection, which can be hours long, by a neurologist. Several automatic systems have been proposed to detect epilepsy but still have some unsolved issues. In this study, we proposed a dynamic method using a deep learning model (Epileptic-Net) to detect an epileptic seizure. The proposed method is largely heterogeneous and comprised of the dense convolutional blocks (DCB), feature attention modules (FAM), residual blocks (RB), and hypercolumn technique (HT). Firstly, DCB is used to get the discriminative features from the EEG samples. Then, FAM extracts the essential features from the samples. After that, RB learns more vital parts as it entirely uses information in the convolutional layer. Finally, HT retains the efficient local features extracted from the layers situated at the different levels of the model. Its performance has been evaluated on the University of Bonn EEG dataset, divided into five distinct classes. The proposed Epileptic-Net achieves the average accuracy of 99.95% in the two-class classification, 99.98% in the three-class classification, 99.96% in the four-class classification, and 99.96% in classifying the complicated five-class problem. Thus the proposed approach shows more competitive results than the existing model to detect epileptic seizures. We also hope that this method can support experts in achieving objective and reliable results, lowering the misdiagnosis rate, and assisting in decision-making.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) is essential for the diagnosis of epilepsy, but it requires expertise and experience to identify abnormalities. It is thus crucial to develop automated models for the detection of abnormalities in EEGs related to epilepsy. This paper describes the development of a novel class of compact convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for detecting abnormal patterns and electrodes in EEGs for epilepsy. The designed model is inspired by a CNN developed for brain–computer interfacing called multichannel EEGNet (mEEGNet). Unlike the EEGNet, the proposed model, mEEGNet, has the same number of electrode inputs and outputs to detect abnormal patterns. The mEEGNet was evaluated with a clinical dataset consisting of 29 cases of juvenile and childhood absence epilepsy labeled by a clinical expert. The labels were given to paroxysmal discharges visually observed in both ictal (seizure) and interictal (nonseizure) durations. Results showed that the mEEGNet detected abnormalities with the area under the curve, F1-values, and sensitivity equivalent to or higher than those of existing CNNs. Moreover, the number of parameters is much smaller than other CNN models. To our knowledge, the dataset of absence epilepsy validated with machine learning through this research is the largest in the literature.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a psychosocial neurological disorder, which emerges as a major threat to public health. In this age of the internet of things, the smart diagnosis of epilepsy has gained huge research attention with machine learning-based seizure detection in cloud-fog assisted environments. The present paper also proposes a cloud-fog integrated smart neurocare approach, which performs a temporal analysis of raw electroencephalogram (EEG) signals using deep learning to detect the occurrence of epileptic seizures. This patient-independent approach makes use of single-channel EEG signals to achieve real-time and computationally efficient seizure detection at fog layer devices. It employs a maximum variance-based channel selection procedure to select only one channel of raw scalp EEG signals, followed by their filtering and segmentation into various short-duration temporal segments. To analyse EEG patterns, these segments are further fed to the proposed models of convolutional neural network, recurrent neural network and stacked autoencoder deep learning classifiers. The performance analysis through simulation results evidently reveals that the proposed convolutional neural network-based temporal analysis approach performs better than other approaches. It realises an optimum accuracy of 96.43%, sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 93.33% for 30s duration EEG segments of CHB-MIT dataset and achieves 100% accuracy, sensitivity and specificity values for EEG segments of Bonn dataset for 23.6s EEG segments. Thus, the proposed convolutional neural network-based approach emerges as an appropriate method for rapid and accurate detection of epileptic seizures in fog-cloud integrated environment.

Abstract:Epileptic seizures are a prevalent neurological condition that impacts a considerable portion of the global population. Timely and precise identification can result in as many as 70% of individuals achieving freedom from seizures. To achieve this, there is a pressing need for smart, automated systems to assist medical professionals in identifying neurological disorders correctly. Previous efforts have utilized raw electroencephalography (EEG) data and machine learning techniques to classify behaviors in patients with epilepsy. However, these studies required expertise in clinical domains like radiology and clinical procedures for feature extraction. Traditional machine learning for classification relied on manual feature engineering, limiting performance. Deep learning excels at automated feature learning directly from raw data sans human effort. For example, deep neural networks now show promise in analyzing raw EEG data to detect seizures, eliminating intensive clinical or engineering needs. Though still emerging, initial studies demonstrate practical applications across medical domains. In this work, we introduce a novel deep residual model called ResNet-BiGRU-ECA, analyzing brain activity through EEG data to accurately identify epileptic seizures. To evaluate our proposed deep learning model’s efficacy, we used a publicly available benchmark dataset on epilepsy. The results of our experiments demonstrated that our suggested model surpassed both the basic model and cutting-edge deep learning models, achieving an outstanding accuracy rate of 0.998 and the top F1-score of 0.998.

Abstract:Epilepsy is the second most common brain disorder after migraine. Automatic detection of epileptic seizures can considerably improve the patients' quality of life. Current Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based seizure detection systems encounter many challenges in real-life situations. The EEGs are non-stationary signals and seizure patterns vary across patients and recording sessions. Moreover, EEG data are prone to numerous noise types that negatively affect the detection accuracy of epileptic seizures. To address these challenges, we introduce the use of a deep learning-based approach that automatically learns the discriminative EEG features of epileptic seizures. Specifically, to reveal the correlation between successive data samples, the time-series EEG data are first segmented into a sequence of non-overlapping epochs. Second, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network is used to learn the high-level representations of the normal and the seizure EEG patterns. Third, these representations are fed into Softmax function for training and classification. The results on a well-known benchmark clinical dataset demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach over the existing state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, our approach is shown to be robust in noisy and real-life conditions. Compared to current methods that are quite sensitive to noise, the proposed method maintains its high detection performance in the presence of common EEG artifacts (muscle activities and eye-blinking) as well as white noise.

Abstract:Nearly 1% of people worldwide suffer from epilepsy. Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based diagnostics and monitoring tools, such as scalp EEG, subscalp EEG, stereo EEG, or sub/epi-dural EEG recordings [also known as electrocorticography (ECoG)], are widely used in different settings as the gold standard techniques to perform seizure identification, localization, and more primarily in epilepsy or suspected epilepsy in patients. Techniques such as subscalp EEG and ECoG offer long-term brain interaction, potentially replacing traditional electroceuticals with smart closed-loop therapies. However, these systems require continuous on-device training due to real-time demands and high power consumption. Inspired by the brain architecture, biologically plausible algorithms, such as some neuromorphic computing, show promise in addressing these challenges. In our research, we utilized liquid time-constant spiking neural networks with forward propagation through time to detect seizures in scalp-EEG. We trained and validated our model on the Temple University Hospital dataset and tested its generalization on out-of-sample data from the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) and EPILEPSIAE datasets. Our model achieved high area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) scores of 0.83 in both datasets. We assessed the robustness by decreasing the memory size by 90% and obtained an overall AUROC of 0.82 in the RPAH dataset and 0.83 in the EPILEPSIAE dataset. Our model showed outstanding results of 3.1 μJ power consumption per inference and a 20% firing rate during training. This allows for incorporating bio-inspired efficient algorithms for on-device training, tackling challenges such as memory, power consumption, and efficiency.

Abstract:Neurologists typically identify epileptic seizures from electroencephalograms (EEGs) by visual inspection. This process is often time-consuming, especially for EEG recordings that last hours or days. To expedite the process, a reliable, automated, and patient-independent seizure detector is essential. However, developing a patient-independent seizure detector is challenging as seizures exhibit diverse characteristics across patients and recording devices. In this study, we propose a patient-independent seizure detector to automatically detect seizures in both scalp EEG and intracranial EEG (iEEG). First, we deploy a convolutional neural network with transformers and belief matching loss to detect seizures in single-channel EEG segments. Next, we extract regional features from the channel-level outputs to detect seizures in multi-channel EEG segments. At last, we apply post-processing filters to the segment-level outputs to determine seizures' start and end points in multi-channel EEGs. Finally, we introduce the minimum overlap evaluation scoring as an evaluation metric that accounts for minimum overlap between the detection and seizure, improving upon existing assessment metrics. We trained the seizure detector on the Temple University Hospital Seizure (TUH-SZ) dataset and evaluated it on five independent EEG datasets. We evaluate the systems with the following metrics: sensitivity (SEN), precision (PRE), and average and median false positive rate per hour (aFPR/h and mFPR/h). Across four adult scalp EEG and iEEG datasets, we obtained SEN of 0.617–1.00, PRE of 0.534–1.00, aFPR/h of 0.425–2.002, and mFPR/h of 0–1.003. The proposed seizure detector can detect seizures in adult EEGs and takes less than 15s for a 30min EEG. Hence, this system could aid clinicians in reliably identifying seizures expeditiously, allocating more time for devising proper treatment.

Abstract:A deep learning classifier for detecting seizures in neonates is proposed. This architecture is designed to detect seizure events from raw electroencephalogram (EEG) signals as opposed to the state-of-the-art hand engineered feature-based representation employed in traditional machine learning based solutions. The seizure detection system utilises only convolutional layers in order to process the multichannel time domain signal and is designed to exploit the large amount of weakly labelled data in the training stage. The system performance is assessed on a large database of continuous EEG recordings of 834h in duration; this is further validated on a held-out publicly available dataset and compared with two baseline SVM based systems. The developed system achieves a 56% relative improvement with respect to a feature-based state-of-the art baseline, reaching an AUC of 98.5%; this also compares favourably both in terms of performance and run-time. The effect of varying architectural parameters is thoroughly studied. The performance improvement is achieved through novel architecture design which allows more efficient usage of available training data and end-to-end optimisation from the front-end feature extraction to the back-end classification. The proposed architecture opens new avenues for the application of deep learning to neonatal EEG, where the performance becomes a function of the amount of training data with less dependency on the availability of precise clinical labels.
