Abstract:Introduction: Social workers, the largest group of mental health clinicians in the United States, play a pivotal role in mental health promotion. Despite the importance of sleep for mental health, there is no empirical research on sleep education interventions for social workers. Method: We designed an online sleep health education intervention to equip social work students to promote healthy sleep practices among their clients. An interdisciplinary team of experts devised the 90 min intervention using an empirically supported behavioral change theoretical model (COM-B). The intervention discusses multi-level factors that impact sleep and emphasizes considerations for health disparities in populations commonly served by social workers (e.g., unhoused populations, clients with substance use disorders, etc.). We assessed sleep knowledge, sleep quality, and acceptability using survey and focus group data. Results: Ninety social work students (92.2% female, 38.8% non-Hispanic white) completed pre- and post-intervention assessments. Participants demonstrated significant improvements in sleep health knowledge and their personal sleep quality. Quantitative and qualitative data revealed perceived usefulness for social work practice. Conclusions: A short online sleep education intervention can improve sleep health knowledge, offering a practical method to expand social workers' understanding of healthy sleep promotion that can be readily implemented in clinical training and practice.

Abstract:IntroductionCollege students tend to struggle with managing healthy sleep habits; these unhealthy behaviors can lead to poor sleep and impact their overall mental and physical health. More specifically, sleep is intimately connected to psychological and physiological factors such as anxiety, depression, and blood pressure. The focus of the current study was to examine habitual sleep habits in college students, provide a brief educational intervention, and investigate potential changes in psychological and physiological health.MethodsParticipants included 14 undergraduate students (6 men, average age M=20.64 years, SD=2.13) who wore wrist actigraphs to measure their typical sleep habits. After one week, participants completed questionnaires about sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale, ESS), fatigue (Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue Scale, MAF), and psychological symptoms (i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress; Depression Anxiety Stress Scales, DASS-21). Blood pressure and heart rate were measured using a wrist device. Subjects participated in a short lecture about healthy sleep hygiene habits and the importance of sleep and then repeated the one-week observational study.ResultsPaired sample t-tests revealed a significant increase from baseline average sleep duration (M=5.83 hours) to post-intervention sleep duration (6.64 hours; t(13)=-2.532, p=.013). Sleep efficiency (actigraphy) and quality (PSQI) did not improve significantly. ESS scores decreased significantly (t(13)=3.76, p=.002 (pre M=9.29; post M=5.43) and MAF scores decreased significantly (t(13)=2.19, p=.047 (pre M=20.48; post M=15.60). No significant differences were found in depressive, anxiety, or stress symptoms when comparing DASS-21 scores pre- vs post-intervention. Baseline systolic blood pressure (M=114.88) significantly decreased compared to post-intervention recordings (M=108.21). Diastolic blood pressure and heart rate did not differ significantly.ConclusionThe results of this study suggest that one educational lecture about sleep hygiene may be a start to improving sleep in college students. Even a 48-minute increase resulted in decreased sleepiness and fatigue. However, no improvements were found in sleep quality or efficiency. Although a slight improvement was found in systolic blood pressure, no other physiological or psychological benefits were noted. Abstract:This article provides a preliminary evaluation of a campus sleep health program for undergraduate university students. In this study, 5 focus groups with 38 undergraduates assessed perceptions about sleep in relationship to college experiences. Additionally, 35 undergraduate students participated in campus sleep improvement workshops, and completed a brief self-report survey before and after the workshop. Results showed five themes emerged from focus groups: (a) Sleep and its impact on academics, (b) Understanding of the importance of sleep, (c) Procrastination and its impact on sleep, (d) Stress, and (e) Sleep and extracurricular/social activities. Based on self-report surveys, there was no improvement in perceived sleep importance, but perceived sleep confidence of undergraduate student-participants increased significantly after the workshop. The sleep health program for undergraduates showed promising results, and should be evaluated using a larger, more rigorous design in future studies.

Abstract:Objective: This study investigates the effects of a sleep education program, "Sleep 101", on sleep hygiene practices, sleep quality, and weekday and weekend sleep behaviors among college students. Participants: A total of 338 college students from a midsized public university in the US participated, with 25 completing both the baseline and post-intervention questionnaire. Methods: The Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI) and self-reported questions were used to assess sleep behaviors and subjective sleep quality. Results: Participants who completed the study experienced a significant increase in weekday sleep duration and were less likely to engage in activities unbeneficial for sleep before bedtime. Additionally, 40% of the completers reported improvements in their sleep quality. Conclusions: These findings suggest that a brief online program like "Sleep 101" can effectively improve sleep behaviors among college students and might be a scalable approach to addressing current sleep issues and preventing future sleep problems in this population.

A Critical Review of Education-Based Sleep Interventions for Undergraduate Students: Informing Future Directions in Intervention Development

Abstract:Young adult undergraduate students are known to be a sleep-deprived population. Sleep disturbances among college students pose many potential risks to health, safety, and learning, and several education-based sleep interventions have been developed to improve sleep among college students. While many interventions have been found to improve sleep hygiene behaviors and sleep outcomes, few studies have identified and examined intervention components that are associated with these improvements. A review was warranted to synthesize current research on education-based sleep interventions and to propose recommendations to inform intervention development. The current review aimed to compare and analyze existing sleep education interventions with regard to specific intervention components and study designs. Through this review and critical appraisal of 12 intervention studies, we found that both brief sleep education interventions and semester-long sleep education courses statistically significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved sleep knowledge, sleep behaviors, and sleep health among undergraduate students. Cognitive behavioral strategies, specifically self-monitoring, were associated with significant improvements in sleep outcomes, and, thus, may be relevant additions to sleep education-based interventions for college students. Future intervention research is needed to increase our understanding of healthy sleep behavior change among sleep-deprived college students, and to improve interventions to address the adoption and maintenance of healthy sleep behavior. Recommendations are intended to help inform future directions in sleep intervention development for young adult undergraduate students, who are at increased risk for sleep disruption and disturbance and their attendant effects on well-being, performance, safety, and overall health.

PurposeTo pilot a novel approach investigating the interplay of social and institutional determinants influencing university undergraduate student sleep patterns.DesignA two-part, three-phase mixed-methods approach.SettingA mid-size US university conducted in spring and fall 2020.Participants191 undergraduate students (69 first-years, 43 second-years, 48 third-years, 31 fourth-years).MethodFor Part A, participants texted their activities and emotions in real time, producing a data-rich, weeklong diary of comprehensive activity logs, emoticons, multimedia submissions, and juxtapositions of ideal vs real schedules. Semi-structured contextual interviews were also conducted. For Part B, a one-time survey examined Part A insights across all class years. These diverse datasets were triangulated using thematic, comparative, and content analyses through MAXQDA software and visual mapping methods.ResultsThree preliminary themes were identified as encouraging an irregular sleep schedule: a prevailing academic ethos emphasizing busyness, time management challenges, and the rhythm of institutional schedules and deadlines. An overarching theme suggests that perceptions of peer sleep habits and academic prioritization above all else could be influential across factors.ConclusionThis pilot study indicates that sleep regularity among undergraduates is potentially shaped by individual choices combined with broader institutional paradigms. While it is limited by its exploratory nature, timing, and small sample size, the results highlight the promise of this methodology for more extensive studies and suggest that future interventions should emphasize systemic changes that prioritize sleep.

Abstract:Sensitizing young adults about sleep hygiene knowledge and helpful sleep attitudes may have the potential to instill long-lasting healthy sleep practices. Towards these ends, evaluation of psychoeducational program "Sleep 101" tailored to college students was undertaken. Following two weeks of sleep-log recordings, participants were randomly assigned to a Sleep 101 (experimental) condition or a sleep monitoring (control) condition. The Sleep 101 condition was comprised of two 90-minute workshops aimed to educate students about healthy sleep practices, helpful thoughts about sleep, and ways to improve sleep. The sleep monitoring group received a sleep hygiene handout and completed sleep logs for the study duration. Sleep 101 participants endorsed fewer maladaptive beliefs and attitudes about sleep, increased sleep hygiene knowledge, and reduced sleep onset latency compared to the sleep monitoring participants. Brief psychoeducational courses may be a cost-effective way to alleviate current, and/or prevent future, sleep problems in young adults.

Abstract:Background Sleep health is essential for overall health, quality of life and safety. Researchers have found a reduction in the average hours of sleep among college students. Poor sleep has been associated with deficits in attention, reduction in academic performance, impaired driving, risk-taking behaviors, depression, impaired social relationships and poorer health. College students may have limited knowledge about sleep hygiene and the behaviors that supports sleep health, which may lead to poor sleep hygiene behavior. Objectives To identify, appraise and synthesize the best available evidence on the effectiveness of sleep education programs in improving sleep hygiene knowledge, sleep hygiene behavior and/or sleep quality versus traditional strategies. Inclusion criteria Types of participants All undergraduate or graduate college students, male or female, 18 years and older and of any culture or ethnicity. Types of interventions Formal sleep education programs that included a curriculum on sleep hygiene behavior. Educational delivery methods that took place throughout the participants’ college experience and included a variety of delivery methods. Types of studies Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental studies. Outcomes Sleep hygiene knowledge, sleep hygiene behavior and/or sleep quality. Search strategy Literature including published and unpublished studies in the English language from January 1, 1980 through August 17, 2015. A search of CINAHL, CENTRAL, EMBASE, Academic Search Complete, PsychINFO, Healthsource: Nursing/Academic edition, ProQuest Central, PubMed and ERIC were conducted using identified keywords and indexed terms. A gray literature search was also performed. Methodological quality Quantitative papers were assessed by two reviewers using critical appraisal instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-MAStARI). Data extraction Data were extracted using the JBI-MAStARI data extraction tool. Data extracted included interventions, populations, study methods and outcomes of significance to the review question and objectives. Data synthesis Meta-analysis was not possible due to limited studies and variability of design and interventions; therefore, results are presented in narrative form. Results This systematic review yielded three RCTs and one quasi-experimental study for inclusion. Two studies reported outcomes on sleep hygiene knowledge; one showing a statistically significant improvement (P = 0.025) and the other reported no difference (test of significance not provided). Two studies reported on sleep hygiene behavior; one showing no difference (P > 0.05) and the other reporting a statistically significant improvement (P = 0.0001). Four studies reported on sleep quality; three reporting no difference (P > 0.05) and the other reporting a statistically significant improvement (P = 0.017). Conclusion This reviewed article identified insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of sleep education on sleep hygiene knowledge, sleep hygiene behavior or sleep quality in this population.

Abstract:In this study we evaluated the effect of a two-credit (100 min./week) “Sleep Management” course on the sleep patterns of college students as the course progressed over an 18-wk. semester. Curricular activity included lectures, group discussions, and practice of self-evaluation of sleep. Instead of giving the students the whole list of sleep hygiene at the outset of the course, each concept of sleep hygiene was introduced and discussed under related lecture topics. A total of 241 students (131 men and 110 women) took the course and kept 7-day sleep logs three times. Concurrently, sleep-log data were collected from 65 students (32 men and 33 women) who were not taking the course. Both groups showed similar varieties of academic backgrounds and characteristics of sleep patterns at the beginning. Similarly, their sleep patterns, namely, rise time, nighttime awakenings, time asleep, time in bed, sleep efficiency, and rise time regularity, changed over the semester. Women in both groups had more nighttime awakenings. In contrast, sleep quality was progressively better for the group in the course but not for the control group. Only women in the course decreased their nap time in the second and third months. Thus, the course of “Sleep Management” only had a mild and limited effect on sleep patterns. The course content needs refinement to maximize influence on students' sleep patterns and habits, particularly, on reduction of insufficient sleep and daytime sleepiness which are the highest ranking sleep problems among college students.

Abstract:Background: Medical students carry a huge academic load which can be a contributing factor in sleep disturbances. Studies have shown that the prevalence of sleep disturbance is comparatively higher in medical students than in non-medical students or the general population. Despite various psychological and behavioral interventions for sleep improvement, not much is known about their effectiveness in real-world scenarios. Our study aims to compare the effectiveness of psychobehavioural interventions on sleep disturbances compared to sleep hygiene for undergraduate medical students. Methods: A randomized trial will be used to assess the effectiveness of psychobehavioural interventions in improving sleep quality using the following tools: Semi-structured sociodemographic proforma, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Glasgow Sleep Effort (GSE) scale, Pre-sleep Arousal Scale (PAAS), and Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (KIMS). Inclusion criteria: participants scoring 5 or higher on the PSQI will be recruited for psychobehavioural interventions after obtaining informed consent. The participants will be randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. Discussion: SPSS will be used to analyse the data. Descriptive statistics will be used to describe the sample. An intention-to-treat analysis will be performed to assess the effectiveness of the interventions. This study will provide valuable insights into the feasibility and effectiveness of non-pharmacological sleep interventions to address sleep difficulties among undergraduate medical students.

Abstract:Important pitfalls in dermatology are few. The resultant errors may be important because they are common or because they may have serious effects. Sometimes both reasons obtain. The most common errors are in the diagnosis and treatment of dermatitis (eczema). Serious consequences may ensue if syphilis, parasites or new growths are overlooked. In dermatitis the endogenous causes most frequently disregarded are systemic drugs and an area of primary dermatitis elsewhere. For potential exogenous irritants the order of investigation should be: parasites, hobbies, work and previous treatment. The most common causes of failure in treatment of dermatitis are: (1) Continued exposure to the cause or to secondary irritants including treatment, soap and water. (2) Insufficient rest. (3) Perhaps the most important inadequate reassurance and explanation of the details of treatment. Syphilis and parasites are no respecters of social or biological status and are most commonly overlooked through lack of awareness.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To evaluate the effects of a sleep hygiene education program for adolescents to address excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, and sleep-related behaviors. Materials and Methods The participants were 98 high school students from the 11th and 12th grades. A day-long health promotion action was conducted at their school science fair to disseminate relevant information about sleep disorders. Social status and sleep perception and habits were evaluated through the following validated questionnaires: the Brazilian Economic Classification Criteria, a questionnaire on sleep habits for adolescents, the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale, the Insomnia Severity Index, and the Sleep Time-Related Information and Communication Technology questionnaire. The questionnaires were administered before the fair and 12 months after participation, and the results before and after the intervention were compared by means of the Student t-test and the Fisher exact test. For the correlations involving the results, the Pearson correlation was used with the level of significance of p < 0.05. Results A qualitative reduction in poor bedtime habits was observed after the intervention, such as watching television and leaving a cell phone on with sound. A higher frequency of use of electronic devices can affect school performance and contribute to later bedtime on weekends (p < 0.001). Excessive daytime sleepiness was correlated with the excessive use of electronic devices (p = 0.017). Conclusion Some habits changed after the awareness intervention. There was an impact of the use of electronic devices on academic performance, on the regularity of bedtimes, and on excessive daytime sleepiness. We emphasize the importance of health education programs with sustainable actions following actual changes in behavior.
Healthy sleep for healthy schools: A pilot study of a sleep education resource to improve adolescent sleep

Abstract:Issue addressed: Insufficient sleep and unhealthy sleep practices in adolescents are associated with significant health risks. Sleep education programs in schools aim to improve sleep behaviour. A new eLearning sleep education program, Healthy Sleep for Healthy Schools (HS4HS), was developed focused on these goals and is distinguishable from other sleep education programs because it is delivered by teachers, making it more sustainable and adaptable for schools. We aimed to evaluate if HS4HS would improve student sleep knowledge, healthy sleep practices, sleep duration and reduce sleepiness. We also aimed to understand if this intervention could be successfully implemented by trained teachers. Methods: Teachers trained in sleep delivered HS4HS to 64 South Australian students in year 9 (aged 13-14 years) over 6 weeks during regular school curriculum. A sleep education survey assessing sleep patterns (such as healthy sleep practices, time in bed and sleepiness), and a sleep knowledge questionnaire was completed pre- and post-HS4HS delivery. Evaluations were also completed by teachers. Results: Sleep knowledge and healthy sleep practices significantly improved post intervention. Time in bed on both school days and weekends increased slightly and sleepiness decreased slightly, but these changes were not statistically significant. Teachers found the program useful, comprehensive and easy to incorporate into their curricula. Conclusions: After short training, teachers can deliver sleep education during class and improve sleep practices in their students. This suggests that this program may offer potential as an effective and useful resource for teachers wanting to include sleep health in their curriculum. SO WHAT?: Sleep is the foundation of good health and teachers can promote and integrate sleep education into their curricula for the first time with this online teacher focussed program, which has the potential to be a sustainable sleep health promotion resource.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction College students are notorious for inconsistent sleep schedules and poor sleep hygiene, which can influence mental health and academic success. Many intervention programs seek to improve college student sleep quality by educating them on the importance of sleep and healthy sleep behaviors; however, it remains an open question whether poor sleep behaviors are due to a lack of knowledge about sleep. To inform this issue, we developed a test of sleep knowledge and compared outcomes to standard scales of sleep duration and quality. Methods Participants (N=130, 21 male) included full-time undergraduate students (mean age=19.65, SD=1.54 years) who completed a series of online questionnaires examining sleep quality and duration (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI), sleep hygiene (Sleep Hygiene Index, SHI), and a new measure of sleep knowledge (Sleep Knowledge, Information, and Values Test, SKIV). The SKIV is a self-reported questionnaire that includes questions about weekday and weekend sleep duration, sleep quality, confidence and source of sleep health knowledge, perceived importance of sleep education in different populations, and basic sleep hygiene and sleep health questions. Results Average sleep duration (PSQI) was 7.00 hours per night (SD=1.36) and sleep quality was poor (PSQI M=6.86, SD=3.33). Participants scored an average 13.47 out of 20 points (SD=3.59) on multiple choice and multi-answer questions about general sleep knowledge (SKIV). SKIV sleep knowledge test scores and SKIV ratings of importance of sleep education were positively correlated with SHI scores (M=21.53, SD=7.56; r=.309, p<.001 and r=.267, p=.002), but not PSQI global sleep quality (r=-.025, p=.783; r=.005, p=.954) or PSQI sleep duration (r=.065, p=.463; r=.071, p=.423). SHI scores were significantly correlated with PSQI sleep quality (r=.467, p<.001). Conclusion College students with greater sleep knowledge reported engaging in better sleep hygiene practices, but still showed short duration or poor quality sleep. Therefore, future interventions should go beyond sleep education to changing environmental features (e.g., noise and light in dormitories) and institutional practices (early class start times, midnight homework deadlines) that hinder sleep health in students. Abstract:Nursing students experience inadequate sleep because of academic demands, with detrimental effects on academic performance. Objective and subjective data informed students' sleep patterns. Actigraphy data revealed that students (n = 46) slept for 392 minutes per night. Among the 38 participants who completed actigraphy and demographic and survey data, Pearson correlation testing revealed significant relationships between self-efficacy and perceived stress (r = -.604, p = .001), as well as average sleep time (r = -.371, p = .022). Qualitative data revealed the impact sleep has on physical and mental well-being. Individual and environmental influences resulted in students achieving insufficient sleep.
Feasibility of a Self-Administered Hypnosis Intervention for Improving Sleep in College Students

Abstract:Approximately two out of three college students report experiencing suboptimal sleep quality. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of a self-administered hypnosis intervention to improve sleep in college students. Twenty-two college students who self-reported poor sleep quality were enrolled in a 4-week study comprising 1 baseline week and a 3-week self-administered hypnosis intervention. Sleep onset latency and sleep efficiency as measured by wrist actigraphy were significantly improved. The mean average nightly sleep duration during the baseline week was 398.88 minutes (SD = 56.44), which increased to a mean of 413.88 minutes (SD = 57.80) during the 3rd week of intervention. However, the results show that there was no statistically significant difference between weeks on objective nightly sleep duration, 95% CI [-11.13, 41.13], t(15) = 1.224, p = .240. Also, results showed that there was no significant difference between weeks on self-reported nightly sleep duration, F(3, 57) = 2.155, p = .103. Twenty participants (91%) completed the study intervention and adherence to daily self-hypnosis practice with an audio recording was high. Zero study-related adverse events were reported, and participants perceived the intervention as easy to use and helpful for improving sleep. These results provide evidence for the feasibility and safety of a self-administered hypnosis intervention to improve sleep in college students. A larger randomized clinical trial is warranted to determine efficacy.

Abstract:Sleep problems are a common occurrence in college students. Insomnia, nightmares and impaired sleep quality lead to several mental health issues, as well as impaired academic performance. Although different sleep programmes exist, a systematic overview comparing their effectiveness is still missing. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of psychological interventions to improve sleep in college students. Seven databases were searched from November to December 2016 (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cinahl, Cochrane Library, PubMed, OpenSigle). The search string included search terms from three different topics: sleep, intervention and college students. Outcome measures included subjective as well as objective measures and focused on sleep, sleep-related and mental health variables. Twenty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. They were assigned to four intervention categories: (1) sleep hygiene, (2) cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), (3) relaxation, mindfulness and hypnotherapy and (4) other psychotherapeutic interventions. Fifteen studies were randomized controlled trials. While sleep hygiene interventions provided small to medium effects, the CBTs showed large effects. The variability of the effect sizes was especially large in the relaxation category, ranging from very small to very large effect sizes. Other psychotherapeutic interventions showed medium effects. CBT approaches provided the best effects for the improvement of different sleep variables in college students. Five studies included insomnia patients. The other three intervention categories also showed promising results with overall medium effects. In the future, CBT should be combined with relaxation techniques, mindfulness and hypnotherapy. Furthermore, the interventions should broaden their target group and include more sleep disorders.

Abstract:College students are known for their variable sleep schedules. Such schedules, along with other common student practices (e.g., alcohol and caffeine consumption), are associated with poor sleep hygiene. Researchers have demonstrated in clinical populations that improving sleep hygiene knowledge and practices is an effective treatment for insomnia. However, researchers who have examined relationships between sleep hygiene and practices in nonclinical samples and overall sleep quality have produced inconsistent findings, perhaps because of questionable measures. In this study, the authors used psychometrically sound instruments to examine these variables and to counter the shortcomings in previous investigations. Their findings suggest that knowledge of sleep hygiene is related to sleep practices, which, in turn, is related to overall sleep quality. The data from their regression modeling indicated that variable sleep schedules, going to bed thirsty, environmental noise, and worrying while falling asleep contribute to poor sleep quality.
