Abstract:This study investigates the effects of ambient illumination and negatively polarized text color on visual fatigue, exploring the issue of visual fatigue when using visual display terminals in low-illumination environments. The research methodology utilizes an experimental design to collect data on changes in pupil accommodation and blink rate through an eye tracker. Participants completed a reading task while exposed to various text colors and ambient light conditions to evaluate visual fatigue and cognitive performance. The study's findings suggest that text color significantly affects visual fatigue, with red text causing the highest level of visual fatigue and yellow text causing the lowest level of visual fatigue. Improvements in ambient lighting reduce visual fatigue, but the degree of improvement varies depending on the text color. Additionally, cognitive performance is better when using yellow and white text but worse when using red text. Yellow text is the most effective choice for reducing visual fatigue under negative polarity. Increasing ambient lighting can also improve visual fatigue in low-illumination conditions. These findings will offer valuable guidance for designing visual terminal device interfaces, especially for low-illumination or night environments, to minimize visual fatigue and improve user experience.

Abstract:Unlike the other studies on emotional design in multimedia learning, the present study differentiated the two confounding variables of visual interface design and structured content to manipulate the instructional material. Specifically, we investigated how the visual aesthetics of positive emotional interface design influenced learners' cognitive processes, emotional valences, learning outcomes, and subjective experience. Eighty-one college students took part in the experimental study. They were divided into the three experimental groups: a holistic layout of positive emotional design group (HPED), a local layout of positive emotional design group (LPED), and a neutral emotional design group (ND). By using a mixed approach of questionnaires and eye tracking, we further explored the differences among the three groups in cognitive processing, learning outcomes, and subjective experience. Results indicated that the LPED group invested higher cognitive effort, put more attentional focus in the relevant knowledge content module, and achieved better learning performance (i.e., retention and transfer tests) in contrast to the HPED group and the ND group. However, no significant difference in dynamic changes of emotional state among the three groups was detected. The analytical results can provide researchers and practitioners with valuable insights into the positive emotional design of multimedia learning, which allows for the facilitation of mental engagement, learning outcomes and subjective perception.
Effects of limited tryptic proteolysis of bovine neurophysins on molecular properties of hormone binding, self-association, and antigenicity.

Abstract:Limited tryptic fragmentation of disulfide-intact bovine neurophysins I and II (NP-I and -II, respectively) has been found to cause selective disruption of both hormone binding and neurophysin self-association. Loss of binding interactions, measured as a loss of ability to stimulate retardation of 125I-labeled neurophysin on Met-Tyr-Phe-amino-butylaminoagarose, is complete within 3 h at 37 degrees C. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of tryptic digests of neurophysin I allows detection of two major protein products and the peptide fragment 1-8. Release of the latter N-terminal piece occurs at about the same rate as loss of binding interactions. Reverse-phase HPLC elution behavior before and after performic acid oxidation and amino acid composition of the protein products led to their identification as NP-I-(9-93) (the 9-93 sequence) and [des-19,20]NP-I-(9-93) (the 9-93 sequence with the dipeptide 19-20 missing) for the more rapidly and more slowly formed species, respectively. NP-I-(9-93), unlike intact neurophysin I, is not retarded strongly by either Met-Tyr-Phe-amino-butylaminoagarose or neurophysin II-Sepharose. In contrast, both NP-I-(9-93) and [des-19,20]NP-I-(9-93) are equally as effective as intact NP-I in binding neurophysin I antibodies. The role of amino-terminal residues in promoting hormone binding, self-association, and antigenic recognition interactions is considered.
Effect of Coloured Text and Background Combination on Visual Comfort for Reading on Display

Abstract:A psychophysical experiment was conducted to investigate visual comfort on displays. 107 images of coloured text on neutral backgrounds were assessed by 20 observers using a magnitude estimation method. The ambient lighting was set at an illuminance of 500 lx and a CCT of 6500 K. The results indicated that reading coloured text on a black background exhibited higher levels of visual comfort compared to that of a white background. In addition, smaller colour differences between the text and background resulted in reduction of visual comfort, while no significant effect of the hue of text was observed. Overall, the present results of provide valuable information on how to improve visual comfort when reading coloured text on mobile displays.
The Effect of Color Combinations on the Efficiency of Text Recognition in Digital Devices

Abstract:The color combination of the text background in digital reading can significantly impact reading efficiency, and prolonged digital reading can affect the efficiency of text recognition. Text background color combinations designed for the display characteristics of digital devices can make users' reading more efficient. This study investigated the effects of five factors - hue, saturation, brightness, text color and background texture - on text recognition efficiency and text legibility in digital reading, using eye-tracking technology and the E-prime psychology experimental operating platform. Pupil diameter was recorded using eye-tracking technology, and correctness and response time were recorded on the E-prime psychological operating platform, with subjective assessment of text legibility on a Likert scale. The results showed that the green-black combination had better legibility and higher recognition efficiency among light background and dark text combinations. And the peach-light grey combination performed the worst. As for the dark background and light text combinations, the green-white combination showed better legibility and recognition efficiency. Meanwhile, the background texture did not significantly affect reading efficiency in the experiment. This study investigated the factors influencing digital reading interfaces regarding recognition efficiency and legibility, which provided a reference for the design of digital reading interactive interfaces and had practical implications for reducing recognition efficiency decline due to prolonged reading.

Effects on the Ocular Surface from Reading on Different Smartphone Screens: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Study.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of smartphone reading on the ocular surface and to compare the various effects of different screens and light conditions on the ocular surface. One hundred nineteen volunteers were randomly divided into: light + organic light‐emitting diode (OLED), light + electronic ink (eINK), dark + OLED, and dark + eINK. Ocular surface examinations, including noninvasive break‐up time (NIBUT), noninvasive keratograph tear meniscus height (NIKTMH), ocular redness, fluorescein break‐up time (FBUT), corneal fluorescein staining, meibomian gland assessment, Schirmer I Test, and blinking frequency, were performed before and after a reading task. Symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Computer Vision Syndrome Questionnaire (CVS‐Q). NIBUT and FBUT were decreased statistically significantly after participants read on an OLED screen for 2 hours compared with the baseline in light and dark environments, whereas no statistically significant decrease was observed on an eINK screen. NIKTMH was statistically significantly decreased after reading on an OLED screen in light and dark settings, and the eINK screen had a lesser effect on NIKTMH. An obvious increase in the ocular redness, OSDI and CVS‐Q scores was observed after reading on an OLED screen, whereas the eINK screen had a lesser effect on these indicators. Blink rate increased gradually in OLED subgroups during the reading task, whereas no statistically significant difference was observed in the eINK subgroups. Our research suggested that reading on an OLED screen can cause ocular surface disorder and obvious subjective discomfort, whereas reading on an eINK screen can minimize ocular surface disorder in both dark and light environments.

Abstract:In this study,the visual performances of 448 matches of color foreground(letter) and color background were studied with the character-discerning and key-pressing response method.The subjective visual and key-pressing response time was examined as an index.The effects of VDT multicolor contrasts on visual performance were explored.It was concluded that the effect of hue on visual performances was remarkable.The performance of the combination of complementary colors was better than the average,and the performance of the combination of the same hue colors was worse than the average.

Abstract:Using electronic devices at night can easily cause visual fatigue. We investigated the conjoint effects of color mode and luminance contrast on visual fatigue and subjective preference when using electronic devices under low screen luminance and low ambient illumination at night. A multidimensional approach based on eye and subjective measures was used to test 2 color modes (dark mode, light mode) and 6 luminance contrast ratios (0.969, 0.935, 0.868, 0.855, 0.725, 0.469) in a $2 times 6$ experimental design. We used eye movement tracking technology to collect blink rate and pupil diameters, and used the Likert scale to measure subjective visual fatigue scale and preference. Results showed that reading in the dark mode reduced visual fatigue, as reflected by an increase in blink rate and pupil accommodation. Lower subjective visual fatigue scale and higher preference were found in the light mode due to subjects' using habits of dark texts on a light background. There was a significant negative correlation between (text-background) luminance contrast and visual fatigue, and subjects preferred higher luminance contrast. We observed the lowest visual fatigue under the luminance contrast of 0.969 in the dark mode, and the lowest subjective preference when the luminance contrast was lower than 0.725. We suggest the users should choose the dark mode to reduce visual fatigue when using electronic devices at night. These findings also provide a reference for the design of interactive interfaces such as tablets and mobile phones, and have practical implications for reducing visual fatigue.

Abstract:New type desktop head-up display (HUD) can reduce visual fatigue and protect vision through long viewing distance. In this study, participants evaluated visual performance, fatigue, and discomfort of desktop HUD under two contrast polarity (N = 36) and five display luminance levels (N = 21). A positive polarity advantage was found over negative in visual fatigue and discomfort ( p < .05). Statistically significant effect of luminance was found on visual performance, fatigue, and discomfort ( p < .05). The calculated optimum display luminance by the proposed inverted-U fitted model was 153 cd/m 2 under 300 lx, higher than that of traditional desktop displays. It is speculated that higher luminance is required to offset the reduction in contrast sensitivity due to smaller target angular size, which caused by longer viewing distance. These findings suggest that positive polarity and 153 cd/m 2 can be used to improve performance and avoid fatigue and discomfort when utilising desktop HUD under 300 lx. A visual ergonomic study was conducted on new type desktop HUD. With visual performance, fatigue, and discomfort as optimisation goals, positive polarity and 153 cd/m 2 was recommended under 300 lx. Compared with traditional desktop displays, higher luminance was required in desktop HUD under the same illumination.

Abstract:Abstract Proper contrast used for elements within websites or applications is one of the key factors providing their visibility and ability to attract user attention. While usability guidelines and standards such as WCAG 1 assume the existence of minimal contrast for optimum user experience, maximal contrast for positive user experience has not been defined. Recent studies showed that too high a contrast can be harmful for user experience, while visibility is reduced if it is too low. In the present study, experiments were performed to examine the level of user-friendliness and visibility for selected color pairs. We calculated the color contrast according to the WCAG standard. As a result, it was possible to find color combinations not necessarily with a high contrast but delivering visibility and not diminishing user experience. Finally, a ColoUR Picker Tool was developed that supports designers in the design of effective visual communication, which is understood as searching for a balance between user-friendliness, visibility, and color contrast. Research expands current efforts towards effective web design and increased user experience.
Visual Comfort Models Based on Coloured Text and Neutral Background Combinations

Abstract:Reading on mobile phones can cause visual discomfort, negatively affecting visual health. Most studies have focused on neutral text-background combinations, with limited validation for coloured text-background combinations. This study investigates the impact of coloured text on neutral backgrounds and the colour difference between text and background on visual comfort during digital reading. A psychophysical experiment was conducted, where 230 images of coloured text on neutral backgrounds were evaluated by 20 participants using a 6-point scale for visual comfort. Results showed that reading coloured text on a black background generally provided higher comfort compared to a white background. Additionally, visual comfort decreased as the text colour approached that of the background. The effect of text hue on comfort was not significant. Furthermore, several visual comfort models for mobile displays were developed and compared. The VC1-LAB model is based on Bern's attributes, while the VC2-LAB model focuses on the lightness of text and background. The VC3-LAB model includes both lightness and chroma attributes. Comparisons revealed that VC3-LAB outperformed the others in predicting visual comfort, highlighting the importance of lightness and chroma in improving predictive accuracy. Therefore, the VC3-LAB model is useful for evaluating the visual comfort of coloured text on neutral backgrounds.
Effect of display polarity and luminance contrast on visual lobe shape characteristics

Abstract:The effect of display polarity and luminance contrast on visual lobe (effective visual field) shape characteristics was studied using three levels of luminance contrast with combinations of positive and negative polarities. The binocular effective visual field for a detection task, with a peripherally presented target (V) embedded in a homogeneous competing background (Xs), was mapped on 24 imaginary axes passing through the fixation point. The results showed that visual lobes mapped using positive polarity were statistically larger in area, rounder and more regular in shape than those for negative polarity. The medium contrast condition lobes were more symmetric and regular than low contrast condition lobes, and lobe area and perimeter increased with increasing luminance contrast ratio. Under the interaction of positive polarity and high luminance contrast, visual lobes were found to be larger, smoother and rounder. The high level of luminance and contrast however resulted in a higher degree of visual discomfort. The results indicated that positive polarity and contrast of medium (26:1) to high (41:1) levels are possible display settings for better visual lobe characteristics and better anticipated search performance. Practitioner Summary: The effect of display polarity and luminance contrast on visual lobe shape characteristics was examined with uniform stimulus materials in this study. The results help to identify the optimum display settings for luminance contrast and display polarity to enhance lobe shape characteristics and hence search performance in industrial inspection tasks.
Dark Mode or Light Mode? Exploring the Impact of Contrast Polarity on Visualization Performance Between Age Groups

Abstract:This study examines the impact of positive and negative contrast polarities (i.e., light and dark modes) on the performance of younger adults and people in their late adulthood (PLA). In a crowdsourced study with 134 participants (69 below age 60, 66 aged 60 and above), we assessed their accuracy and time performing analysis tasks across three common visualization types (Bar, Line, Scatterplot) and two contrast polarities (positive and negative). We observed that, across both age groups, the polarity that led to better performance and the resulting amount of improvement varied on an individual basis, with each polarity benefiting comparable proportions of participants. However, the contrast polarity that led to better performance did not always match their preferred polarity. Additionally, we observed that the choice of contrast polarity can have an impact on time similar to that of the choice of visualization type, resulting in an average percent difference of around 36%. These findings indicate that, overall, the effects of contrast polarity on visual analysis performance do not noticeably change with age. Furthermore, they underscore the importance of making visualizations available in both contrast polarities to better-support a broad audience with differing needs. Visual comfort as a function of lightness difference between text and background: A cross‐age study using an LCD and a tablet computer

Abstract:Two experiments were performed to investigate the effects of text-background lightness difference on visual comfort. A panel of 21 young and 20 older observers in Taiwan participated in Experiment I, using an LCD TV (with a display luminance of 551.8 cd/m(2)) as the presentation media. The results show that on a light background, visual comfort increases as the lightness difference gets larger and larger. On a dark background, however, the highest visual comfort value can be obtained when there is a moderate lightness difference. There seems to be little effect of age on visual comfort using the LCD TV with regard to the lightness difference. In Experiment II, 20 young and 20 older Taiwanese observers participated, using a tablet computer (with a display luminance of 397.3 cd/m(2)). According to the results, the larger text-background lightness difference, the higher visual comfort value for older observers. For young observers, however, the highest visual comfort value can be obtained when there is a moderate, rather than extremely high, lightness difference. Effects of Display and Ambient Illuminance on Visual Comfort for Reading on a Mobile Device.

Abstract:A psychophysical experiment was carried out to investigate visual comfort when reading on three OPPO Find X3s displays at three luminance levels (100, 250 and 500 cd/m2) at five illuminance levels (0, 10, 100, 500 and 1000 lx). Twenty young observers evaluated visual comfort using a 6-category points method. The results showed that observers felt most comfortable at the illuminance of 500 lx or display luminance of 500 cd/m2. There was an interaction between ambient illuminance and display luminance. High ambient light and display brightness levels provide a more pleasant visual experience. In low ambient light, however, the lower the brightness level, the more comfortable it is to see. Regarding the influence of background colour on visual comfort, the observers felt more comfortable having a grey background than white or black colour. When at dim illuminance, the background colour would have a great influence on visual comfort for negative contrast conditions, but when at higher illuminance, different background lightness levels had a great impact on visual comfort for positive contrast conditions. The above findings are very similar to the display luminance levels of 100 and 250 cd/m2.
A novel approach to study the effect of font and background color combinations on the text recognition efficiency on LCDs

Abstract:With the popularization of cell phones, laptops, and tablets, Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) have become one of the main types of User Interface (UI) in the modern world. While LCDs are widely used for retrieving text information, the impact of text formatting on the legibility is often overlooked. With the goal of improving recognition efficiency (RE) on LCDs, this paper studies the impact of font-background colors on RE of texts being presented on LCD. For this purpose, difference between font/background color combinations, Primary Color Difference (PCD), is introduced that brings efficient RE assessment under wider spectrum. Accordingly, a testing platform is designed in C#. NET that captures participants response time to different font-background color combination stimuli. Based on the results, black background and green font color outperform other tested colors especially when the PCD is maximized. In correspond to results, Implications for using research outcome in prototype LCDs are suggested.

Abstract:Interactive environments create endless possibilities for the design of websites, games, online platforms, and mobile applications. Their visual aspects and functional characteristics influence the user experience. Depending on the project, the purpose of the environment can be oriented toward marketing targets, user experience, or accessibility. Often, these conflicting aspects should be integrated within a single project, and a search for trade-offs is needed. One of these conflicts involves a disparity in user behavior concerning declared preferences and real observed activity in terms of visual attention. Taking into account accessibility guidelines (WCAG) further complicates the problem. In our study, we focused on the analysis of color combinations and their contrast in terms of user-friendliness; visual intensity, which is important for attracting user attention; and recommendations from the Web Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). We took up the challenge to reduce the disparity between user preferences and WCAG contrast, on one hand, and user natural behavior registered with an eye-tracker, on the other. However, we left the choice of what is more important—human conscious reaction or objective user behavior results—to the designer. The former corresponds to user-friendliness, while the latter, visual intensity, is consistent with marketing expectations. The results show that the ranking of visual objects characterized by different levels of contrast differs when considering the perspectives of user experience, commercial goals, and objective recording. We also propose an interactive tool with the possibility of assigning weights to each criterion to generate a ranking of objects.

Abstract:Given the wide application of eye-controlled systems, the target population is not only people with a physical disability. The importance of design is increasing; no matter where the eye-controlled system is to be applied, research on the interface needs to keep up with system development. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of eye movement, and the interaction of eye-controlled systems and visual design principles, the aim of this study was to explore whether a change in the colour of the interactive elements in an eye-controlled system will affect the efficiency of a user's visual search. Based on the actual needs of the eye-movement interaction process in the eye-controlled system, we developed an eye-controlled interaction system using Unity software. Based on this system, we investigated whether a change in the colour of the interactive elements in the eye-controlled system interface was related to search duration. The experimental data verified that changes in colour saturation and brightness affected users’ search efficiency. When the saturation value of the icon colour was in the three ranges of 33% to 44%, 62% to 70, or 85% to 98%, reaction time was longest; the brightness value of the icon colour should be higher than 16%, and it is not recommended to be less than 5% under any circumstances. The experiment was combined with a questionnaire to quantitatively analyse participants' evaluation of the three types of feedback colours: reducing brightness, converting to the contrasting colour and converting to white. It was found that participants generally believed that the feedback form of reducing brightness was very natural, and the feedback form of converting to the contrasting colour was very clear. Moreover, it was found that participants of different ages had significant differences in the evaluation of feedback colour types. This study adds substantial evidence to the field of colour research in the visual representation of eye-controlled system interfaces.

Abstract:The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is essential in emotional and cognitive processes, yet the effects of light and color on brain activity and emotional perception remain underexplored. This study examined the influence of screen brightness and saturation on emotional perception in human-machine interfaces under simulated daytime, cloudy, and nighttime conditions, with 29 volunteers participating. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy assessed PFC hemodynamics. Results indicated higher pleasantness for low versus high saturation under both high and low brightness, while high brightness and saturation were more attractive to participants. High-saturation screens activated the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and left dorsolateral PFC (dIPFC) under high brightness, whereas low saturation increased left dIPFC activation under low brightness. OFC activation positively correlated with pleasantness, while left dIPFC activation negatively correlated with attractiveness. These findings highlight the neurophysiological impact of light and color on emotional perception, providing insights to optimize interface design and user experience in varying lighting conditions.

The impact of using reverse polarity text for children with vision impairment assessed using light-adapted flicker electroretinogram

Abstract:Clinical relevance: Children with vision impairment can have difficulty accessing classroom reading material and knowledge of which students are likely to have improved performance reading performance with reverse polarity would be of value to educators. Background: Printed material is typically presented as black text on a white background; however, reversing the polarity to white text on a black background may improve the reading speed for children with vision impairment. This study sought to identify the visual function or pathological features of children with vision impairment where reversing the polarity of text would improve their reading performance. Methods: Forty-eight vision-impaired participants (27 male), aged 5-18 years with binocular visual acuities between 0.18-1.52 logMAR, were included. Reading performance was assessed by changes in Critical Print Size (ΔCPS), Maximum Reading Speed (ΔMRS) in normal and reverse polarity digital print, and numeric reading speed (ΔNRS) with normal and reverse polarity fonts. Correlations were made with 30 Hz flicker electroretinogram amplitude and high/low contrast acuity. Paired nonparametric tests evaluated significance in pathological condition groups. Results: Significant negative correlations were only found between the 30 Hz flicker amplitude and ΔMRS (r = -.42, p = .028) and ΔNRS (r = -.46, p = .027). Follow-up pairwise comparisons based on pathology group only showed a significant effect of the retinal dystrophy group and CPS (n = 12, z = -2.24, p = .025). All other pairwise comparisons based on group were non-significant (p > .05). Conclusions: This study did not identify a specific pathological group or visual functional measure that could be used as a clinical marker to predict the impact of reversing polarity. However, significant improvements could be made in reading performance for some children and so a reading performance assessment is recommended for all children with vision impairment.
