Abstract:Microplastic pollution is recognized as a ubiquitous global issue. However, limited information is available concerning microplastics in the marine air. Here we present the occurrence and distribution of atmospheric microplastics in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean, with abundance ranging from 0.0046 to 0.064 items/m3. The microplastics were in various shapes and polymer types, of which fibrous rayon (67%) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 23%) accounted for the majority. The atmospheric microplastics in the pelagic area showed higher abundance and smaller size compared to those in the nearshore area, indicating smaller-sized microplastics in the atmosphere might travel long distances over the ocean. The atmospheric microplastic distribution was not only affected by weather conditions but might also be related to the microplastic sources. The microplastic polymer types combined with the backward trajectory model analysis showed that atmospheric microplastics in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean mainly originated from the land and the adjacent oceanic atmosphere. Spearman's correlation coefficient of the relationship between the features of microplastics in the atmosphere and surface seawater tended to increase with increasing offshore distances. Our field-based research revealed that atmospheric microplastics were a non-negligible source of marine microplastic pollution.

Abstract:Abstract Plastic pollution is globally recognised as a threat to marine ecosystems, habitats, and wildlife, and it has now reached remote locations such as the Arctic Ocean. Nevertheless, the distribution of microplastics in the Eurasian Arctic is particularly underreported. Here we present analyses of 60 subsurface pump water samples and 48 surface neuston net samples from the Eurasian Arctic with the goal to quantify and classify microplastics in relation to oceanographic conditions. In our study area, we found on average 0.004 items of microplastics per m 3 in the surface samples, and 0.8 items per m 3 in the subsurface samples. Microplastic characteristics differ significantly between Atlantic surface water, Polar surface water and discharge plumes of the Great Siberian Rivers, allowing identification of two sources of microplastic pollution (p < 0.05 for surface area, morphology, and polymer types). The highest weight concentration of microplastics was observed within surface waters of Atlantic origin. Siberian river discharge was identified as the second largest source. We conclude that these water masses govern the distribution of microplastics in the Eurasian Arctic. The microplastics properties (i.e. abundance, polymer type, size, weight concentrations) can be used for identification of the water masses.

Abstract:As a new type of pollutant, microplastics widely exist in the marine environment and have attracted a lot of attention from the international community. In order to study the distribution of microplastics and the influence of ocean current, microplastic samples in seawater of the southern Indian Ocean were collected using a peristaltic pump equipped on-board and concentrated on site. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of microplastics were performed using a stereo-microscope and a micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscope attenuated total reflection. The results showed that the average abundance of microplastics in seawater of the southern Indian Ocean was 2.3 ± 2.1 items/m3, which was consistent with that in other oceans. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyethylene (PE), Rayon, polyamide (PA), and polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) were the main polymers of microplastics in the southern Indian Ocean. The size range of all detected microplastics was 108.2–4703.0 μm. All microplastics had different colors, such as black, red, yellow, gray, blue, green, purple, and transparent. Fiber was the dominant shape of microplastics. The abundance distribution of microplastics fluctuated in the latitudinal direction. The abundance of microplastics from the present study area was higher in the coastal region of the South Africa continent and the Indian Ocean garbage patch, with an average abundance of 4.0 items/m3. The average abundance of microplastics was relatively high in the convergence area of the circulation, which revealed that the ocean current facilitated the agglomeration and transportation of microplastics.

Abstract:Atmospheric microplastics have been widely reported and detected in remote mountain areas and oceans, indicating that they can be transported over long distances through the atmosphere. Regional transport and deposition processes of atmospheric microplastics have a significant impact on the source and sink patterns, as well as the flux mechanisms of microplastics in terrestrial and marine environments. However, few studies have been conducted on the deposition of atmospheric microplastics. Thus, in this study, we collected atmospheric microplastic samples from the northwestern South China Sea and estimated that in the fall the dry deposition of atmospheric microplastics into the ocean was 1.4 ? 103 t, which had a greater contribution than riverine inputs of microplastics in this region, suggesting that atmospheric microplastics are non-negligible sources of marine plastic litter with high environmental risk. Additionally, we reported on the abundance (0.035 ? 0.015 n/m3), morphological characteristics, composition, and sources of atmospheric microplastics in the northwestern South China Sea. Smaller-sized microplastics had a high abundance that decreased with increased proximity from the coast. Most of the detected microplastics were fibers, which accounted for approximately two-thirds of the total quantity. The spectral analysis detected seven polymer types, and polyester was predominant (29%). Combined with the cluster analysis of the backward trajectories of airflow, we demonstrated that the airflow affecting the northwestern South China Sea originated mainly from the northeast, potentially carrying microplastics from cities located in southeastern Chinese provinces to the South China Sea.

Abstract:Microplastic particles are a global concern due to their widespread and growing threat to marine and coastal environments. To improve knowledge of microplastic pollution in China, we investigated 25 sediment samples collected with a box corer in the Southern Yellow Sea and East China Sea off the coast of China. The microplastics were extracted from sediments via density separation, after which they were observed under a microscope and characterized according to shape, color, and size, while polymer type identification was performed using micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The abundance of microplastics in the offshore region of the Southern Yellow Sea and East China Sea was mapped. The mean concentration of microplastics at the 25 sites was 13.4 +/- 0.6 particles 100 g(-1) dry weight (range: 6.0-24.0 particles 100 g(-1) dry weight). Based on the categorization according to shape, color, and size, fiber (77%) was the most abundant shape, while blue (35%) and transparent (29%) were the most prevalent colors. In addition, the dominant size of microplastics was smaller than 1000 ism which accounted for 89%. Finally, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, acrylic, polyester, cellulose, and cellophane were the most abundant types of microplastics identified. Our result highlighted the presence of microplastics in offshore sediments from the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, and provided useful information for evaluating the environmental risks posed by microplastics in China. Microplastic contamination in benthic organisms from the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions

Abstract:The seafloor is recognized as one of the major sinks for microplastics (MPs). However, to date there have been no studies reported the MP contamination in benthic organisms from the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. Therefore, this study provided the first data on the abundances and characteristics of MPs in a total of 413 dominant benthic organisms representing 11 different species inhabiting in the shelf of Bering and Chukchi Seas. The mean abundances of MP uptake by the benthos from all sites ranged from 0.02 to 0.46 items g-1 wet weight (ww) or 0.04-1.67 items individual-1, which were lower values than those found in other regions worldwide. The highest value appeared at the northernmost site, implying that the sea ice and the cold current represent possible transport mediums. Interestingly, the predator A. rubens ingested the maximum quantities of MPs, suggesting that the trophic transfer of MPs through benthic food webs may play a critical role. Fibers constituted the major type (87%) in each species, followed by film (13%). The colors of fibers were classified as red (46%) and transparent (41%), and the film was all gray. The predominant composition was polyamide (PA) (46%), followed by polyethylene (PE) (23%), polyester (PET) (18%) and cellophane (CP) (13%). The most common sizes of MPs concentrated in the interval from 0.10 to 1.50 mm, and the mean size was 1.45 ± 0.13 mm. Further studies about the temporal trends and detrimental effects of MPs remain to be carried out in benthic organisms from the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions.

A systems analysis of microplastic pollution in Laizhou Bay, China

Abstract:Microplastic contamination is attracting increasing attention worldwide. In this study, the patterns of microplastic contamination in surface water and sediment from 58 sites, and living fish from 31 sites were investigated in a semi-closed bay (Laizhou Bay, China). Microplastics in Laizhou Bay were pervasively distributed, particularly in the form of fibers. Microplastic abundance exhibited no significant differences among regions in either surface waters or sediments, indicating multiple sources of microplastics pollution in the bay. Spatial hotspot (Getis-Ord Gi*) analysis demonstrated that microplastic pollution was mainly concentrated in the Laizhou-Weifang area, which in turn was mainly affected by ocean current dynamics. Although the spatial distribution of microplastics in sediments was different from surface water, it was also affected by geology, hydrogeology, and anthropogenic activities. The most common polymer in the surface waters was polyethylene terephthalate (PET), while cellophane (CP) was the most frequently observed polymer in sediment, suggesting different sinking behaviors of these microplastics. The proportion of low-density microplastics (PE and PP) in surface water was approximately 19.9%, but these microplastics accounted for only approximately 1.7% in the sediment, suggesting that low-density microplastic particles preferentially migrate to open sea. There were significant differences in shape, size and polymer type of the microplastics among surface water, sediment and biota (p < 0.05). Cluster analysis suggested that the Gudong, Yellow River Estuary and Laizhou-Weifang regions are three sources of microplastics, which might originate from river input, plastic recycling and marine raft aquaculture. Furthermore, microplastic particle diversity was greater in sediment at offshore sites, suggesting that these sites receive microplastics from multiple sources. Our results characterize the microplastic pollution pattern, clarify the possible transfer mechanisms between different environmental media, and will provide important information for risk evaluation and pollution control in this area.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution has become a pressing worldwide environmental crisis due to its ubiquitous occurrence and distribution across the globe and potential impacts on ecosystems and human health. An increasing amount of studies on microplastic pollution worldwide have been reported. Nonetheless, knowledge of microplastic abundance, distribution, and characterization in the mid-North Pacific Ocean remained underexplored. Here, we collected microplastic samples from surface waters at 15 field stations in the mid-North Pacific Ocean using a Manta trawl from September 19, 2019, to October 30, 2019 and from a ∼1500 km latitudinal transect (15–25°N) and a ∼4300 km longitudinal transect (150°E-168°W). The abundance, distribution, and characterization of microplastics were investigated. Our results showed that microplastic abundance ranged from 0.06 to 1.23 items m−3, with a mean of 0.51 ± 0.36 items m−3. The most dominant polymer composition, color, and shape of microplastics were polypropylene (PP, 53%), light colors (white and clear, ∼60%), and irregular fragments (∼31%), respectively. A novel diversity index analysis of microplastic characteristics was carried out to identify multiple sources of microplastic pollution, providing a robust tool for inferring sources of microplastic pollution in the open sea. The K-mean cluster analysis suggested that the 15 sampling sites may be divided into a total of 6 clusters with similar polymer composition. The quantitative results from the field survey indicated the widespread occurrence of microplastic pollution in the open sea, which will allow us to better grasp the rate and extent at which the mid-North Pacific Ocean is increasingly polluted with microplastics.

Microplastic Pollution in Water, Sediment, and Fish from Artificial Reefs Around the Ma'an Archipelago, Shengsi, China.

Abstract:In this study, the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in artificial reefs around the Ma'an Archipelago, a national marine ranching area in China, were investigated. The abundance of microplastics ranged from 0.2 +/- 0.1 to 0.6 +/- 0.2 items L-1 in surface water, 30.0 +/- 0.0 to 80.0 +/- 14.1 items kg(-1) dry weight in the sediment, and 2.3 +/- 1.5 to 7.3 +/- 3.5 items individual(-1) in fish. Most of the detected microplastics were fiber-shaped, blue or transparent, and smaller than 1 mm. Polyethylene, polypropylene, and poly(ethylene:propylene:diene) copolymer were the most abundant polymer types in the surface water samples, whereas cellophane was dominant in the sediment and fish. The appearance of microplastic pollution around the artificial reefs could be attributed mainly to the activities of the fisheries in the area, whereas the microplastic ingestion by fish was affected by the extent of microplastic contamination of the sediment. The results highlight the widespread presence of microplastics in the water, sediment, and biota of the artificial reefs around the Ma'an Archipelago, thereby improving understanding of the environmental risks posed by microplastics to marine artificial reef ecosystems and fisheries in general. A Review of Microplastics in China Marine Waters

Abstract:Microplastics (<5 mm) are ubiquitous in the environment and can pose potential danger to the ecosystem and even human health. As the sink of microplastics, the ocean, especially the densely populated coastal area, has become a hotspot for research on microplastic pollution. In the last decade, the research of marine microplastics has been rapidly increasing in China. This review summarized the microplastic research conducted in China marine waters so far, and introduced the trends and progress of microplastic research in the four seas along the coast of China. We reviewed and compared the current sampling, extraction, and identification methodologies of China's microplastic research. According to the sampling method, the 30 reviewed studies were separated into two categories, trawl sampling and bulk sampling, to summarize relevant data, including abundance, sizes, shapes, colors and polymer types of microplastics. The main results showed that the distribution of microplastics in China's marine environment varied significantly, with offshore mariculture zones and the South China Sea being the most contaminated areas. Transparent, granules (or pellets) and fibers were the most dominant microplastic colors and shapes, and the size of microplastics was influenced significantly by the sampling method. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) were the most common polymer types found in the China Sea, accounting for 49.96%, 29.97%, and 12.38% of the total studies, respectively. Compared with other global data, China's coastal microplastic pollution is at an intermediate level and does not seem to be a major microplastic pollution source.

Prevalence of microplastic fibers in the marginal sea water column off southeast China

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) fibers are present in all environmental media, yet little is known about their distribution, sources, and transport in the water column of marginal seas. In this study, we conducted an intensive sampling campaign in the marginal sea water column off southeast China, which is an area that is greatly influenced by high MP emissions. We found that hydrological effects largely regulated the spatial variations of MP fiber distribution and that MP fibers likely were not entering the South China Sea through terrestrial input from southeast China during the summer monsoon. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers were pervasive in the surface water (SW) (89.47%), subsurface chlorophyll maximum layer (SCML) (92.65%), and bottom water (BW) (94.29%) of the water column during the sampling period. Approximately 32% of MP fibers in the samples were smaller than 330 μm. The abundance of MP fibers in SW was significantly lower than that in the SCML and BW. Based on this observation, we estimated the inventory of MP fibers in the SW, SCML, and BW of the sampling area to be 1.377–1.378, 2.820–2.825, and 2.627–2.629 metric tons, respectively. These results improved our understanding of the source-to-sink process of MP fiber contamination in the water column of marginal seas.

Abstract:Microplastics are new pollutants found in various environments; moreover, high concentrations of microplastics have been proved to harm aquatic organisms. To understand the high abundance of microplastics in the East China Sea (ECS), where the Zhoushan fishing ground is located, this study investigated the transportation and spatial distribution of microplastics from the Changjiang River Estuary (CE) to the ECS via three-dimensional numerical modelling. Utilising observations of microplastics at the surface of the ECS and backward particle tracking, three sources of microplastics were identified: the Changjiang River, Hangzhou Bay, and coastal area of Nantong city. Moreover, Southern Korea contributed to the microplastics in ECS. After microplastics are released from these sources, monsoons, currents, the Changjiang plume, and tides cause significant seasonal differences in the hot spots for microplastics in the ECS; moreover, the generation of ocean fronts may promote microplastic accumulation. In addition, the settling characteristics of microplastics were shown to influence their distributions; for example, large amounts of microplastics accumulated at the bottom of the riverbeds. This study enables a more complete assessment of microplastic transport from estuaries to the open sea and provides a spatial and temporal distribution of microplastics at the surface of the ECS.

Abstract:The prevalence of microplastics in the marine environment has attracted extensive attention. So far, no information is known regarding the temporal and spatial variations of microplastics in Zhongsha Atoll. This study, for the first time, comprehensively investigated the occurrence and distribution of microplastics in the surface seawater in Zhongsha Atoll based on two ocean cruises. The abundances of microplastics measured in the surface seawater of Zhongsha Atoll were in the ranges of not detected (ND) to 67 items/m3, and ND to 160 items/m3 in 2019 and 2020, respectively. All microplastics detected in Zhongsha Atoll were fibers, most of which were transparent and less than 2 mm. Polyethylene terephthalate was the dominating composition of microplastics. These results suggested that sewage, surface runoff, atmospheric deposition by neighboring land, and fishing activities may be the primary pollution sources. This study provides critical information on microplastic pollution in Zhongsha Atoll for the first time, calling for more research in the management of marine plastic debris in the future.

Abstract:Offshore areas are particularly important in recognizing microplastics pollution because they are sinks of land imports and sources of ocean microplastics. This study investigated the pollution and distribution of microplastics in the offshore Sea, rivers and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Jiangsu coastal area in China. Results showed that microplastics were widely present in the offshore area, with an average abundance of 3.1–3.5 items/m 3 . Significantly higher abundance was present in rivers (3.7–5.9 item/m 3 ), municipal WWTPs (13.7 ± 0.5 item/m 3 ), and industrial WWTPs (19.7 ± 1.2item/m 3 ). The proportion of small-sized microplastics (1–3 mm) increased from WWTPs (53%) to rivers (64%) and the offshore area (53%). Polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), and rayon (RA) were dominant types of microplastics. Both living and industrial sources contributed to the prevalent microplastics in the offshore Sea. Redundancy analysis showed that small-sized microplastics (1–3 mm) were positively correlated to total phosphorus (TP), while large-sized microplastics (3–5 mm) were positively correlated to TP and NH 3 –N. The abundance of PE, PP and PVC microplastics were positively correlated to TP and total nitrogen (TN), thus nutrients could be indicators of microplastics pollution in the offshore area.

Abstract:Microplastics pollution has received growing attention worldwide in recent years. However, data on microplastics in the freshwater environment are still limited, especially in high-latitude nature reserves in Northern China. The first study on microplastic pollution in the Liaohe River Reserve in Northern China is reported here, and mesoplastics were also incorporated. Surface water and sediment samples were collected from 32 sites along the nature reserve. The abundance, type, shape, color, and size of micro- and mesoplastics were measured using density extraction, optical microscopy, and FTIR spectroscopy. The data showed that diverse micro- and mesoplastics were found widespread in the 32 sites, and the average abundance of these plastics was 0.11±0.04 10−2 items/L in surface water and 62.29±54.30 items/kg in sediment. Moreover, 70% and 66% were smaller than 2000 µm in surface water and sediment, respectively. Fiber accounted for 91.86% in surface water and 43.48% in sediment, indicating that the major source of micro- and mesoplastics in the Liaohe River Reserve may be domestic sewage and aquaculture. A total of 16 and 27 polymers were identified in surface water and sediment, respectively, and mostly consisted of rayon, polyester, polystyrene, and poly(ethylene terephthalate). Moreover, both the risk index and the pollution load index demonstrated a low risk of micro- and mesoplastics in surface water and sediment in the Liaohe River Reserve.

Abstract:Microplastic contamination in the sediment of marine bays has attracted widespread attention, whereas the distribution, sedimentation, morphology and risk of microplastics at regional scale remain poorly understood. By introducing a data mining framework into microplastic research, we compiled a microplastic dataset of 649 samples from 24 bays to enhance the understanding of geographical difference and drivers, transfer, composition profile and environmental risk of sedimental microplastics. Microplastic abundance varied from 0.72 to 1963.96 items/kg dry weight, with higher concentrations mainly occurring in East Asian bays. The spatial pattern in abundance was driven by the river plastic emissions, aquaculture production and hydrodynamic condition. A significantly positive correlation between microplastic abundance in water and sediment was found, and microplastic sedimentation was related to polymer density, hydrodynamic conditions and sediment properties. The dominant shape and polymer of sedimental microplastics were fiber and polypropylene, respectively, and the similarity of microplastic composition decreased with increasing geographical distance. The environmental risks of microplastics were partitioned into three classes (Rank II-Rank IV) with a two-dimensional assessment system considering the bioavailability and toxicity of microplastics, and Asian bays were identified as potential high-risk areas. To reduce the environmental risk of sedimental microplastics in bays, priority should be given to the removal of microfibers, and control measures depend on the risk classes and dominant polymers. Microplastic abundance and composition were significantly affected by methodological choices regarding sampling, pretreatment and identification, suggesting a unified methodology is essential to further enhance our knowledge on the distribution and risk of microplastics in marine bays.

Abstract:Plastic pollution is one of the growing environmental problems in the world currently. The situation of microplastics (MPs) in the South China Sea (SCS) is not yet fully understood. This study investigated the spatial distribution, morphological characterization, and chemical composition of MPs in surface seawater in the southwestern SCS, based on cruise data in 2018. Our analysis shows that the average abundance of surface MPs in seawater was 0.072 ± 0.053 particles/m 3 and 88.4% of MPs were <2 mm. 97.3% of MPs were fibers and fragments. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and cellophane were predominant polymer components of surface MPs. Higher MPs abundance (0.083 ± 0.063 particles/m 3 ) and bigger MPs sizes were found at surface water in Nansha Islands than in Xisha Islands (0.032 ± 0.01 particles/m 3 ). In addition, more polymer types of MPs were found in Nansha Islands, while more MPs films were found in Xisha Islands. PET and cellophane dominated in Nansha Islands, while PVC dominated in Xisha Islands with no cellophane detected. The surface MPs were low in abundance and diverse in polymers in the southwestern SCS with apparent differences between islands and between onshore and offshore, owing to plastics wastes from vessel traffics and some inhabited islands.

Abstract:We investigated the pollution characteristics, the spatial distributions of microplastics, and the source compositions in the Jiangsu Coastal Area, China. The average abundance of microplastics in the surface water and sediment were 0.0998 ? 0.0720 items/m3 (using a trawl with 333-?m mesh)and 0.1858 ? 0.0927items/g, respectively. The concentration of microplastics showed a distribution trend of high near shore and low far shore in the east-west direction, and were the highest in the southernmost part. According to microplastics found in the surface water, the results of a quantitative source apportionment indicate that the most common source in the northernmost and southernmost regions were clothing fibers, accounting for 38.40% and 40.44% of the total source, respectively. While the major source type in the middle region was the decomposition of hard, large plastic waste. Finally, we suggested some control measures for the main types of microplastics observed in the different regions.
