Abstract:Ozone at ground level (O3) is an air pollutant that is formed from primary precursor gases like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It plays a significant role as a precursor to highly reactive hydroxyl (OH) radicals, which ultimately influence the lifespan of various gases in the atmosphere. The elevated surface O3 levels resulting from anthropogenic activities have detrimental effects on both human health and agricultural productivity. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the variations in surface O3 levels across various regions in the Indian subcontinent, focusing on both spatial and temporal changes. The study is based on an in-depth review of literature spanning the last thirty years in India. Based on the findings of the latest study, the spatial distribution of surface O3 indicates a rise of approximately 50–70 ppbv during the summer and pre-monsoon periods in the northern region and Indo-Gangetic Plain. Moreover, elevated levels of surface O3 (40–70 ppbv) are observed during the pre-monsoon/summer season in the western, southern, and peninsular Indian regions. The investigation also underscores the ground-based observations of diurnal and seasonal alterations in surface O3 levels at two separate sites (rural and urban) in Kannur district, located in southern India, over a duration of nine years starting from January 2016. The O3 concentration exhibits an increasing trend of 7.91% (rural site) and 5.41% (urban site), ascribed to the rise in vehicular and industrial operations. This review also presents a succinct summary of O3 fluctuations during solar eclipses and nocturnal firework displays in the subcontinent.

Abstract:Urban air pollution is a complex problem, which requires a multi-pronged approach to understand its dynamics. In the current study, various aspects of air pollution over Bengaluru city were studied utilizing simultaneous reference-grade measurements (during the period July 2019 to June 2020) of fine particulate matter mass concentration (PM2.5), aerosol black carbon mass concentrations (BC), and surface ozone (O3) concentrations. The study period mean PM2.5, BC, and O3 were observed to be 26.8 ± 11.5 µg m−3, 5.6 ± 2.8 µg m−3, and 25.5 ± 12.4 ppb, respectively. Statistical methods such as principal component analysis, moving average subtraction method, conditional bivariate probability function, and concentration weighted trajectory analysis were performed to understand the dynamics of air pollution over Bengaluru and its long-range transportation pathways. Some of the major findings from the statistical analyses include (i) contrasting association in BC versus O3 and PM2.5 versus O3; (ii) around one-fourth of the observed receptor site BC was contributed by local sources/emissions; and (iii) the source locations potentially contributing to BC and PM2.5 were spatially different. In Bengaluru, long-term exposure to PM2.5 resulted in around 3413, 3393, 1016, and 147 attributable deaths for the health endpoints chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer, respectively. Long-term exposure to O3 resulted in around 155 attributable deaths for respiratory diseases, as estimated by the AirQ + model. Finally, the limitations of the study in terms of data availability and analysis have been detailed.

Abstract:This study investigates the hourly concentrations of Ground-level Ozone (O3), Nitric Oxide (NO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) in ambient air, along with the various meteorological parameters viz., ambient temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation over one year, from August 2020 to July 2021 for an industrial and commercial site in Madhya Pradesh, a central state in India. We also analyze the chemical coupling between the O3 and ambient NO, NO2, and NOx at both sites during the daytime. We focus on understanding how the concentration of the oxidant OX (a combination of ozone and nitrogen dioxide) changes in relation to levels of NOx (a combination of nitrogen oxides) to determine whether the atmospheric sources of OX are dependent on the NOx-independent or regional contributions and NOx-dependent or local contributions. We also observe a significant positive correlation of O3 with ambient temperature and solar radiation but a strong negative correlation with relative humidity for the considered period. We found the monthly variations of the pollutants' concentrations show a strong seasonality dependence. O3 concentration becomes highest/lowest during summer/monsoon for both sites. In contrast, NOx exhibits the maximum and minimum concentration during monsoon and summer for both sites. The daily variation shows the opposite trend for O3 and NOx. O3 reaches a peak at mid-day around 14: 00 Hrs when ambient temperature also goes to maximum and has the minimum value at night time due to lack of sunlight.

Abstract:Atmospheric ozone (O3) concentration is impacted by a number of factors, such as the amount of solar radiation, the composition of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and hydrocarbons, the transport of pollutants and the amount of particulate matter in the atmosphere. The oxidative potential of the atmosphere and the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) as a result of atmospheric oxidation are influenced by the prevalent O3 concentration. The formation of secondary aerosols from O3 depends on several meteorological, environmental and chemical factors. The relationship between PM2.5 and O3 in different urban environmental regimes of India is investigated in this study during the summer and winter seasons. A relationship between PM2.5 and O3 has been established for many meteorological and chemical variables, such as RH, WS, T and NOx, for the selected study locations. During the winter season, the correlation between PM2.5 and O3 was found to be negative for Delhi and Bengaluru, whereas it was positive in Ahmedabad. The city of Bengaluru was seen to have a positive correlation between PM2.5 and O3 during summer, coinciding with the transport of marine air masses with high RH and low wind speed (as evident from FLEXPART simulations), leading to the formation of SOAs. Further, O3 concentrations are predicted using a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) model based on the relation obtained between PM2.5 and O3 for the summer season using NOx, T, RH, WS and PM2.5 as inputs.

Abstract:Increasing anthropogenic activities and biomass burning events over the Northern Indian region severely affect the pristine environment of North-Western Himalayas. To investigate their influence in this data sparse region, continuous monitoring of O 3 , CO and NO x are made during January 2018 to December 2019 over Dehradun, an urban location in the foothills of North-western Himalayas. Ozone shows daytime broad peak and CO and NO x show two peaks during morning and evening hours. The maximum daytime ozone is observed during spring with 58.2 ± 2.0 ppbv (56.2 ± 2.7 ppbv) during 2018 (2019). CO and NO x show maximum value during winter and minimum during summer-monsoon. Their concentrations are found to be influenced from stubble burning and forest fire emissions during late spring. WRF-Chem simulations are made with and without biomass burning emissions to quantify the contribution of these emissions on the variability of these gases over Dehradun. Sensitivity simulations reveal that biomass burning over northern Indian region contributed 43 ppbv, 79 ppbv and 1.2 ppbv increase in O 3 , CO and NO x mixing ratios over Dehradun. In addition, dust storm event in June 2018 contributed for lower ozone levels in 2018 (16.1 ± 9.3 ppbv) and stratosphere troposphere exchange process enhanced surface ozone in June 2019 (53.6 ± 22.3 ppbv).

Abstract:This research study investigates hourly data on concentrations of five major air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM 10 , PM 2.5 ) and gaseous pollutants (SO 2 , NO 2 , CO) measured during 2022 at four hotspot sites (industrial site, traffic site, commercial site, harbour, and one residential site) in Chennai, India. The analysis encompasses temporal variations spanning annual, seasonal, and diurnal variations in the pollutants. Notably, PM 10 and CO emerge as the predominant pollutants, with the highest concentrations at industrial and traffic sites (PM 10 : 67.64 ± 40.77 μg/m 3 , CO: 1.41 ± 0.84 mg/m 3 ; traffic site: PM 10 : 58.67 ± 20.05 μg/m 3 , CO: 0.99 ± 0.57 mg/m 3 ). Seasonal dynamics reveal prominent winter spikes in particulate matter (PM 10 , PM 2.5 ) and carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations, while nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ) levels peak during the summer season, particularly in the harbour area. The proximity to roadways exerts a discernible influence on diurnal patterns, with traffic sites showcasing broader rush hour peaks compared to sharper spikes observed at other sites. Furthermore, distinct bimodal patterns are evident for PM 10 and PM 2.5 concentrations in residential and harbour areas. A common lognormal distribution pattern is identified across the studied sites, suggesting consistent air quality trends despite contrasting locations. The conditional probability function (CPF) is used in conjunction with local meteorological conditions for identifying key pollution sources in each location. The implementation of polar plots emphasizes industries as principal local sources of pollution, at industrial sites significantly contributing to PM 10 , SO 2 , and NO 2 concentrations under specific wind conditions. The main objective of the present study is to facilitate a good understanding of pollutant dynamics, pollution sources, and their intricate interplay with meteorological factors, thereby contributing to the formulation and implementation of effective air pollution control and mitigation strategies.

Abstract:This paper reports the first study which comprises the seasonal, diurnal variability, source characterization, ozone forming potential and risk assessment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at three sites (two urban and one rural) in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India. The study was performed during three seasons of the year 2013-14 and two different categories of VOCs (aromatics and halogenated) have been selected. The study used the sampling and analytical procedures of NIOSH methods. Results showed that the mean concentration of sum of VOCs (∑VOC) is significantly higher at urban sites (110.0 and 137.4μg/m3 for JN and CP, respectively) as compared to the rural site, DP (56.5μg/m3). The contribution of individual to total VOC concentrations is noticed to be very similar at all the three sites. Most of the VOCs are observed to be significantly higher in winter followed by summer and autumn. Diurnal cycles of aromatic VOCs are highly influenced by the vehicular traffic and photochemical oxidations which showed higher and lower levels during morning/evening and daytime, respectively. Diagnostic ratios of the toluene/benzene (ranged from 0.65 to 13.9) infers the vehicular traffic might be the main contributing source in the urban sites while xylene/benzene ratio (ranged from 0.7 to 2.8) confirms the VOCs are transported to rural site from the nearby urban areas. Correlation and factor analysis suggested the sources are group of different species (traffic emissions, solvent usage and industrial) rather than single gas. The analysis of reactivity in terms of Prop-Equiv concentrations and ozone forming potential indicated that m/p-xylene and toluene are the main VOC contributing to the total ozone formation in urban and rural sites, respectively. Hazard ratios and lifetime cancer risk values exceeded the permissible standards established by USEPA and WHO suggests that the people are at significant risk.

Abstract:AlphaKAP is a protein produced from a gene within the gene of the a isoform of calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaM-kinase IIa). It consists of the association domain of CaM-kinase IIa and a highly hydrophobic amino-terminal stretch consisting of 25 amino acids which is absent from CaM-kinase IIalpha. We previously demonstrated that alphaKAP is an integral membrane protein by subcellular fractionation analysis [Sugai, R., Takeuchi, M., Okuno, S., and Fujisawa, H. (1996) J. Biochem. 120, 773-779], but the exact subcellular localization of alphaKAP was not well understood. Here we demonstrate that alphaKAP is localized on the nuclear membrane of COS-7 cells transiently expressing alphaKAP. The nuclear membrane and perinuclear small vesicles were immunostained with an antibody against a synthetic peptide corresponding to the carboxyl-terminal 15 amino acids of alphaKAP. In contrast to the intact alphaKAP, the mutant alphaKAP, from which the hydrophobic amino-terminal segment had been deleted, accumulated within nuclei. Thus, alphaKAP may function as an anchoring protein for CaM-kinase II and/or other proteins in the perinuclear membrane.

Abstract:The unique geographical diversity and rapid urbanization across the Indian subcontinent give rise to large-scale spatiotemporal variations in urban heating and air emissions. The complex relationship between geophysical parameters and anthropogenic activity is vital in understanding the urban environment. This study analyses the characteristics of heating events using aerosol optical depth (AOD) level variability, across 43 urban agglomerations (UAs) with populations of a million or more, along with 13 industrial districts (IDs), and 14 biosphere reserves (BRs) in the Indian sub-continent. Pre-monsoon average surface heating was highest in the urban areas of the western (42 °C), central (41.9 °C), and southern parts (40 °C) of the Indian subcontinent. High concentration of AOD in the eastern part of the Indo-Gangetic Plain including the megacity: Kolkata (decadal average 0.708) was noted relative to other UAs over time. The statistically significant negative correlation (−0.51) between land surface temperature (LST) and AOD in urban areas during pre-monsoon time illustrates how aerosol loading impacts the surface radiation and has a net effect of reducing surface temperatures. Notable interannual variability was noted with, the pre-monsoon LST dropping in 2020 across most of the selected urban regions (approx. 89% urban clusters) while it was high in 2019 (for approx. 92% urban clusters) in the pre-monsoon season. The results indicate complex variability and correlations between LST and urban aerosol at large scales across the Indian subcontinent. These large-scale observations suggest a need for more in-depth analysis at city scales to understand the interplay and combined variability between physical and anthropogenic atmospheric parameters in mesoscale and microscale climates.

Abstract:Delhi, India, suffers from periods of very poor air quality, but little is known about the chemical production of secondary pollutants in this highly polluted environment. During the postmonsoon period in 2018, extremely high nighttime concentrations of NOx (NO and NO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were observed, with median NOx mixing ratios of ∼200 ppbV (maximum of ∼700 ppbV). A detailed chemical box model constrained to a comprehensive suite of speciated VOC and NOx measurements revealed very low nighttime concentrations of oxidants, NO3, O3, and OH, driven by high nighttime NO concentrations. This results in an atypical NO3 diel profile, not previously reported in other highly polluted urban environments, significantly perturbing nighttime radical oxidation chemistry. Low concentrations of oxidants and high nocturnal primary emissions coupled with a shallow boundary layer led to enhanced early morning photo-oxidation chemistry. This results in a temporal shift in peak O3 concentrations when compared to the premonsoon period (12:00 and 15:00 local time, respectively). This shift will likely have important implications on local air quality, and effective urban air quality management should consider the impacts of nighttime emission sources during the postmonsoon period.

Long-term Trend of O-3 in a Mega City (shanghai), China: Characteristics, Causes, and Interactions with Precursors

Abstract:In recent years, ozone (O3) is often the major pollutant during summertime in China. In order to better understand this problem, a long-term measurement of ozone (from 2006 to 2015) and its precursors (NOx and VOCs) as well as the photochemical parameter (UV radiation) in a mega city of China (Shanghai) is analyzed. The focus of this study is to investigate the trend of O3 and the causes of the O3 trend in large cities in China. In order to understand the relationship between the O3 precursors and O3 formation, two distinguished different sites of measurements are selected in the study, including an urbanization site (XJH-Xujiahui) and a remote site (DT-Dongtan). At the XJH site, there are high local emissions of ozone precursors (such as VOCs and NOx), which is suitable to study the effect of O3 precursors on O3 formation. In contrast, at the DT site, where there are low local emissions, the measured result can be used to analyze the background conditions nearby the city of Shanghai. The analysis shows that there were long-term trends of O3 and NOx concentrations at the urban site (XJH) from 2006 to 2015 (O3 increasing 67% and NOx decreasing 38%), while there were very small trends of O3 and NOx concentrations at the background site (DT). The analysis for causing the O3 trend suggests that (1) the large O3 increase at the urban area (XJH) was not due to the regional transport of O3; (2) the measurement of solar radiation had not significant trend during the period, and was not the major cause for the long-term O3 trend; (3) the measurement of VOCs had small change during the same period, suggesting that the trend in NOx concentrations at the urban site (XJH) was a major factor for causing the long-term change of O3 at the urban area of Shanghai. As a result, the O3 and NOx concentrations from 2006 to 2015 at the urban area of Shanghai were strongly anti-correlated, suggesting that the extremely high NOx concentration in the urban area depressed the O3 concentrations. It is interesting to note that the anti-correlation between O3 and NOx was in an un-linearly relationship. Under high O3 concentration condition, the ratio of Δ[O3]/Δ[NOx] was as large as −1.5. In contrast, under low O3 concentrations, the ratio of Δ[O3]/Δ[NOx] was only −0.2. This result suggested that when O3 concentration was high, it was more sensitive to NOx concentration, while when O3 concentration was low, it was less sensitive to NOx concentration. This study provides useful insights for better understanding the causes of the long-term-trend of regional O3 pollution nearby Shanghai, and has important implication for air pollution control in large cities in China. Due to the fact that NOx and VOCs are not only precursors for O3, but also are important precursors for particular matter (PM). If reduction of NOx leads to decrease in PM, but increase in O3, the NOx emission control become a very complicated issue and need to carefully design a comprehensive control method.
Simultaneous measurements of ozone and its precursors on a diurnal scale at a semi urban site in India

Abstract:Simultaneous observations of surface ozone (O3) with its precursors namely, carbon monoxide (CO) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) have been taken on diurnal scale from a tropical semi-urban site, Pune (18.54°N, 73.81°E) in India. We present the data for one year (2003–2004) period to study the salient features of these trace gases. The peak in amplitude of ozone is found during the noontime whereas in CO and NOX it is observed in the morning hours between 0800 and 0900 H. The concentration of these pollutants drop down considerably during southwest monsoon months and the diurnal pattern also become very weak. The diurnal trends of these gases are found to be different for different seasons, which are specific to the receptor site. Model simulations using 3-D chemical-transport model with regional emission inventories and observed winds have also been carried out. The comparison of model results with observations, on seasonal basis yielded a reasonable qualitative agreement. The relative role of local emissions and long range transport in the diurnal pattern for different seasons has been outlined, which reveals that the ozone is highly influenced by regional/long range transport in this region. The effect of precursor amounts in the morning on afternoon ozone peak levels has been investigated using the lag correlation study, which reveals that a time lag of 5–7 h is required for most of these precursor gases to photo-chemically produce ozone to its maximum potential. Results are discussed in the light of available topographic and meteorological conditions.

Abstract:In this study, particulate matter (PM) variation has been analyzed to address the dearth of scientific research on air pollution in a coastal city from south India. Mean PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentrations were 61.6 ± 26.4 and 87.3 ± 35.4 μg/m 3 . The highest (lowest) seasonal concentration was observed during winter (monsoon). Increase in PM from September to February is attributed to low relative humidity, biomass burning in nearby paddy fields, and continental air mass from the east and north-easterly direction. The mean PM2.5/PM10 ratio was 0.71, with the seasonal ratio ranging between 0.64 (summer) and 0.76 (monsoon), indicating the dominance of anthropogenic PM fraction. PM exhibited typical characteristic of the urban region, i.e., a two-peak diurnal trend during all seasons except monsoon. PM 10 (PM 2.5 ) concentrations decreased by ∼7–24.2% (∼11–21%) on the weekends, with the highest reduction in winter seasons. Regarding correlation analysis among PM, CO, and ozone; a negative correlation between PM 10 and O 3 and a positive correlation between PM and CO was observed. Wind speed and PM 10 showed a positive quadratic linear, whereas wind speed and PM 2.5 showed a negative linear relationship. The primary sources of particulate matter in Kannur town are motor vehicle emissions, dust from construction work in surrounding zones, and nearby industrial units.

Abstract:Lucknow is the capital of India's largest state, Uttar Pradesh, one of South Asia's most polluted urban cities. Tropospheric photochemistry relies on non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), which are ozone and secondary organic aerosol precursors. Using the proton-transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) at an urban background site in Lucknow, the chemical characterisation of NMVOCs was performed in real time from December 2020 to May 2021. About ∼ 173 NMVOCs from m/z 31.018 to 197.216 were measured during the study period, including aromatics, non-aromatics, oxygenates, and nitrogen-containing compounds. The campaign daily mean concentrations of the NMVOCs were 125.5 ± 37.5 ppbv. The NMVOC daily average concentrations were about ∼ 30 % higher during the winter months (December–February) than in summer (March–May). The oxygenated volatile organic compounds and aromatics were the dominant VOC families, accounting for ∼ 57 %–80 % of the total NMVOC concentrations. Acetaldehyde, acetone, and acetic acid were the major NMVOC species, 5–15 times higher than the other species. An advanced multi-linear engine (ME-2) model was used to perform the NMVOC source apportionment using positive matrix factorisation (PMF). It resolves the five main sources contributing to these organic compounds in the atmosphere. They include traffic (23.5 %), two solid fuel combustion factors, SFC 1 (28.1 %) and SFC 2 (13.2 %), secondary volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) (18.6 %), and volatile chemical products (VCPs) (16.6 %). Aged and fresh emissions from solid fuel combustion (SFCs 1 and 2) were the dominant contributors to the total NMVOCs, and compounds related to these factors had a high secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential. Interestingly, the traffic factor was the second-highest contributor to the total NMVOCs, and compounds related to this factor had a high ozone formation potential. Significant differences in the composition of the two solid fuel combustions indicate the influence of local emissions and transport of regional pollution to the city. The high temperature during summer leads to more volatilisation of oxygenated VOCs, related to the VCP factor. The study is the first attempt to highlight the sources of NMVOCs and their contribution to secondary pollutant (SOA and O 3 ) formation in the city of Lucknow during winter and summer. The insights from the study would help various stakeholders to manage primary and secondary pollutants within the city.

Abstract:Five atmospheric trace gases were measured in Dhaka, Bangladesh, using an automated direct sensing gas monitoring system. The average concentrations of CO, NO, NO 2 , TVOC, and O 3 were 2603.6 ± 1216.4, 281.5 ± 158.0, 182.7 ± 69.4, 10,068.2 ± 5296.1 and 36.6 ± 23.6 μg/m 3 . The measured trace gas concentrations demonstrated significant seasonal and monthly fluctuations, with NO and CO concentrations being the highest in winter, O 3 and TVOC concentrations being the highest during the monsoon season, and NO 2 concentrations being the highest during the pre-monsoon season. Air mass trajectories and wind rose plots during the monsoon were compared to the winter. It showed that air masses from the southeast and south had an impact on the quantity of most of the trace gases whilst they traveled over the Bay of Bengal throughout the monsoon period. In contrast, air masses from the northwestern region, north, and the west had a bigger effect on the rising amount of trace gases across the Indo Gangetic Plain (IGP) during the winter season. NO 2 (182.7 μg/m 3 ) had the maximum concentration of the gases measured and crossed the World Health Organization's (WHO) annual recommended value. The source characteristics of NOx, TVCO, and O 3 gases were determined using the positive matrix factorization (PMF 5.0) model. The combustion of fossil fuels and aerosols were found to be the major sources of NOx and O 3 , with aerosol formation being the primary source of TVOC concentration.

Abstract:The level of air pollution increased in urban areas due to local atmospheric conditions and dispersion of various air pollutants. In this study, the air quality index was carried out in four places in the urban zone and investigated the seasonal variation of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and O3 over one year (2021) by considering the meteorological parameters in Coimbatore. Furthermore, fluidyn-PANACHE, a CFD tool, has been used to simulate the dispersion pattern of gaseous pollutants in the selected locations. To track the model, the concentration details of gaseous pollutants were collected and pollutant dispersion under numerous atmospheric conditions (Humidity, Temperature, Pressure) was identified using fluidyn-PANACHE software. From the collected air samples and dispersion pattern, SO2 and O3 show higher concentrations in summer. Particulate matter and NO2 show higher concentrations in winter due to seasonal variations in energy use and atmospheric constancy. Pearson correlation coefficients indicate most pollutants are correlated in Coimbatore except Ozone. Compared to the AQI category given by CPCB, the selected four locations are in the moderate category. However, increased PM10 levels were observed at all the selected zones in winter due to the process of inversion and environmental conditions.
Deciphering multi-temporal scale dynamics in the concentration, sources and processes of near surface ozone over different climatic regions of India

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the factors influencing seasonal and long-term (2003–2021) changes in the near surface ozone (850 hpa) concentrations over different climatic sub-regions of India. Detailed comparison of daily (2019–2021) near surface ozone values of ERA-5 and CAAQMS (Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations) ground-based measurements revealed that ERA-5 is temporally in phase with CAAQMS measurements falling indifferent climatic sub-regions of India. ERA-5 near surface ozone shows statistically significant long-term (2003–2021) positive trends [2–4 percent per decade (ppd)] over most of the climatic sub-regions, over Indo-Gangetic Planes (IGPs), Southern and Central India trends are particularly strong. Trends were also estimated for each season separately, which were largely positive (2–6 ppd) over Central and Southern India in the Autumn and Winter seasons. Extensive climatological analysis reveals that the reversal of winds in the Indian monsoonal system plays a vital role in such trend patterns across the Indian subcontinent. South-westerly winds from June through September presumably bring ozone deficit air of marine origin, thus causing a dilution effect while the North-easterly winds during late Autumn and early Winters plausibly bring ozone-rich air from the stratospheric-tropospheric efflux dominated Himalayan region. It allows near surface ozone enhancement over Central and Southern India. Seasonal Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that precursor gases (CH 4 and NO 2 ) and climatic variables especially specific humidity (SH) are the primary drivers of near surface ozone variability in the Winter season, while in Spring, climatic variables like boundary layer height (BLH), temperature (T) and SH have a significant role. Principal component regression (PCR) reveals a long-term increase in near surface ozone levels mostly dominated by precursor concentration over IGPs and Southern sub-regions. Whereas, BLH, T and SH significantly explain near surface ozone trends over North-eastern and Coastal India.

Abstract:Measurements of the aerosol number concentration and the PM10 mass concentrations of urban background aerosols in different seasons were performed in New Delhi 2002, including the simultaneous measurements of NO2, SO2 and CO concentrations. The results indicate an interesting relationship between the aerosol number and the PM10 mass concentrations. The number concentration increases with the mass concentration up to 300μgm−3. However, after this point, the number concentration decreases even if the mass concentration increases. An explanation for this nonlinear behavior is proposed through a dynamic model involving the coagulation sink concept. The linear relationship between the mass and the number concentration in ambient air is valid if the mass concentration is relatively low. A high sink, however, means that the number concentration cannot be high—resulting in a decline in the number vs. mass plot. Clear diurnal, weekly and seasonal variations in concentrations were observed. High number concentrations of aerosols were observed in the mornings (7–8 a.m.) and in the evenings (7–10 p.m.). The number concentration was highest in March and lowest in June and the mass concentration was highest in November and lowest in June. The number concentration was higher during weekdays, but the mass concentration was higher during weekends. The number concentration correlates with the NO2 concentration, which indicates that one major source of aerosol particles for the monitored site in New Delhi may be vehicular emission, but also domestic use of fossil fuels and biofuels cannot be neglected.

Abstract:Background: Literature has shown a significant association between asthma exacerbations and pollutant levels during that time. There is very limited evidence in India, especially Bangalore, for impacts of meteorological changes and pollution on asthma hospital admissions in adults. The objective was to study the impact of air pollution and meteorological parameters on asthma exacerbation in Bangalore. Methods: This study quantitatively analyzed the relation between acute exacerbations of asthma and related admissions to the hospital with the air pollution and the meteorological conditions during that time. Data regarding the daily hospital admissions in about 13 tertiary care centers in Bangalore, Karnataka and air pollutant levels and the meteorological conditions prevailing during each day over a year were collected from the Karnataka State pollution control board and meteorology departments, respectively. Results: An average daily asthma admission of 4.84±2.91, with clear seasonal variation and autocorrelations between meteorological parameters and pollutants was observed. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that average temperature (p=0.005) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) (p=0.034) were the two factors that were affecting the number of admissions. Quasi-poisson regression analysis using multi-pollutants and meteorological variables showed that particulate matter and NO2 had significant lag effect for up to 5 days (p<0.05) and rainfall for 1 day (p<0.001). Conclusions: In Bangalore city, levels of NO2 and particulate matter, temperature, rainfall, and season increase asthma exacerbations.
