Abstract:The 25–27 August 2018 geomagnetic storm was the third largest storm in the 24th solar cycle. It was a surprising space event that originated from low-level solar activity. This study provides an overview of the temporal–spatial behaviors of plasma irregularities as functions of geographic longitude, latitude, and altitude using ground-based (GNSS receivers and ionosonde) instruments and space-borne Swarm satellites. The results not only reveal enhanced equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) and hemispheric asymmetry over the Asian–Australian and American sectors at a particular time but also hemispheric asymmetric features of global ROT in the main and recovery phases. Additionally, this storm triggered positive plasma irregularities in altitudes of 100 to 150 km near the Auroral zone, and the changed ratio of bottom-side plasma irregularities exceeded 250%. This finding has been cross-validated by other instruments and models. Furthermore, the storm significantly affected the thermospheric O/N2 density ratio, equatorial electrojet, and vertical E×B drifts. The equatorial and mid-latitude plasma irregularities may be a combined action of thermospheric composition change, equatorial electrojet, and vertical E×B drifts. Finally, the storm induced positive Joule heating irregularities in the Auroral ionosphere in altitudes of 100 to 400 km with a maximum changed ratio of over 200%, as well as enhanced cross-Polar voltage to ~90 kv. The Polar ionospheric irregularities may be associated with additional energy input through particle precipitation, Joule heating, and ionospheric current intensification.

Abstract:On the approach to minimum of Solar Cycle 24, on 26 August 2018, an unexpectedly strong geomagnetic storm (GMS) suddenly occurred. Its \(D _{\mathit{st}}\) index reached \(-174~\mbox{nT}\), that is, the third most intense storm of the cycle. The analysis showed that it was initiated by a two-step long filament eruption, which occurred on 20 August in the central sector of the solar disk. The eruptions were accompanied by two large-scale divergent flare-like ribbons and dimmings of a considerable size and were followed by relatively weak but evident Earth-directed coronal mass ejections. In the inner corona, their estimated speed was very low, about \(200\mbox{--}360~\mbox{km}\,\mbox{s}^{-1}\). The respective interplanetary transients apparently propagated between two high-speed solar wind streams originated from a two-component coronal hole and therefore their expansion was limited. The resulting ejecta arrived at Earth only on 25 August and brought an unexpectedly strong field of \(B _{\mathit{t}} \approx 18.2~\mbox{nT}\) with a predominantly negative \(B _{\mathit{z}}\) component of almost the same strength. The geospace storm also manifested itself in the form of a peculiar Forbush decrease (FD). Its magnitude was about 1.5%, which is rather small for the observed G3-class GMS. The main unusual feature of the event is that large positive bursts with an enhancement up to 3% above the pre-event level were recorded on the FD background. We argue that these bursts were mainly caused by an unusually large and changeable cosmic ray anisotropy combined with lowering of the geomagnetic cutoff rigidity in the perturbed Earth's magnetosphere under cycle minimum-like conditions.

Abstract:This study investigates the responses of the equatorial and low-latitude ionosphere in the American–Atlantic longitude sector during the super geomagnetic storm that occurred on 10–11 May 2024. The investigation utilizes multi-instrument datasets, including ground-based observations (GNSS TEC, ionosonde, and Fabry–Perot interferometer) as well as space-borne satellite measurements (GOLD, Swarm, DMSP, and TIMED). Our findings reveal significant day-to-day variations in the storm-time equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), summarized as follows: (1) During the main phase of the storm, the low- and mid-latitude ionosphere experienced a positive storm, with TEC drastically enhanced by 50–100% within a few hours. The EIA crests exhibited a substantial poleward expansion, reaching as high as ±35° MLAT. This expansion was caused by the enhanced fountain effect driven by penetration electric fields, along with increased ambipolar diffusion due to transient meridional wind surges. (2) During the recovery phase of the storm, the global ionosphere was characterized by a substantial negative storm with a 50–80% depletion in TEC. The EIA crests were notably suppressed and merged into a single equatorial band, which can be attributed to the composition change effect and the influence of disturbance dynamo electric fields. These results illustrate the complex processes of magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere coupling during a superstorm, highlighting the significant impacts of space weather on the global ionosphere.

Abstract:The ionospheric storm time responses during August 2018 are investigated over South American region using multiple observables, for example, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) derived vertical total electron content (VTEC) from International GNSS Service, magnetic field data, geomagnetic indices, global ionospheric maps, thermospheric mass density (TMD), and [ON2] ratio measurement. Strong-ionospheric and upper-atmospheric disturbances affected the ionospheric variables with long duration during the storm recovery phase and following after. First, daytime VTEC (9:0020:00 UT) presented variations of >15 TECU during days 25 to 30 of August 2018 in low and middle latitudes of South America, this after sudden storm commencement (SSC). Furthermore, nighttime (21:0024:00 and 00:0005:00 UT) VTEC presented low values (58 TECU) in the recovery phase. Second, the ionospheric values during the storm main phase and following after, at low- and mid-latitudes, caused the equatorial ionization anomaly to expand due to prompt penetration electric field. Furthermore, VTEC enhancements are likely to occur few hours after the SSC of 25 August 2018, while enhancements of TMD and [ON2] ratio started to appear later on 26 and 27 of August 2018.

Abstract:On 25 August 2018, a G3-class geomagnetic storm reached the Earth’s magnetosphere, causing a transient rearrangement of the charged particle environment around the planet, which was detected by the High-Energy Particle Detector (HEPD) on board the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01). We found that the count rates of electrons in the MeV range were characterized by a depletion during the storm’s main phase and a clear enhancement during the recovery caused by large substorm activity, with the key role played by auroral processes mapped into the outer belt. A post-storm rate increase was localized at L-shells immediately above ∼3 and mostly driven by non-adiabatic local acceleration caused by possible resonant interaction with low-frequency magnetospheric waves.

Abstract:The injection of energy into the Earth's magnetosphere during geomagnetic storms and substorms has a direct impact on the ionosphere in the auroral and sub-auroral regions. This influence can be observed through phenomena such as the expansion of the auroral oval, and fluctuations in plasma density and the intensity of the field-aligned current (FAC) system. Changes in the geomagnetic environment significantly affect the main ionospheric trough (MIT) and field-aligned currents (FACs). In this study, we analysed two geomagnetic storms of different origins—October 2015 and September 2017 that occurred during solar cycle 24. Both storms were characterised by two minima of the Dst index and classified as two-step storms. In this work, we investigate the evolution of FACs density, the displacement of MIT and FACs during the development of geomagnetic storms, and we quest for the relationship between field-aligned currents and the main ionospheric trough. We noticed a connection between the positions of the main ionospheric trough minima and the Dst index, found cases especially during the main and recovery phase of the storms when FACs increase after leaving the ionospheric trough, and observed the predominance of downward currents in the area of the MIT which suggest their influence on the formation of this region of depleted plasma density.

Abstract:In May 2024, the scientific community observed intense solar eruptions that resulted in an extreme geomagnetic storm and auroral extension, highlighting the need to document and quantify these events. This study mainly focuses on their quantification. The source active region (AR 13664) evolved from 113 to 2761 millionths of the solar hemisphere between 4 May and 14 May 2024. AR 13664's magnetic free energy surpassed 1033 erg on 7 May 2024, triggering 12 X-class flares. Multiple interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) came out from this AR, accelerating solar energetic particles toward Earth. At least four ICMEs seemingly piled up to disturb the interplanetary space, according to the satellite data and interplanetary scintillation data. The shock arrival at 17:05 UT on 10 May 2024 significantly compressed the magnetosphere down to ~ 5.04 R_E, and triggered a deep Forbush decrease. GOES satellite data and ground-based neutron monitors confirmed a ground-level enhancement from 2 UT to 10 UT on 11 May 2024. The ICMEs induced extreme geomagnetic storms, peaking at a Dst index of -412 nT at 2 UT on 11 May 2024, marking the sixth-largest storm since 1957. The AE and AL indices showed extreme auroral extensions that located the AE/AL stations into the polar cap. We gathered auroral records at that time and reconstructed the equatorward boundary of the visual auroral oval to 29.8° invariant latitude. We compared naked-eye and camera auroral visibility, providing critical caveats on their difference. We also confirmed global enhancements of storm-enhanced density of the ionosphere.

Abstract:We present a multiinstrumented approach for the analysis of the Arctic ionosphere during the 19 February 2014 highly complex, multiphase geomagnetic storm, which had the largest impact on the disturbance storm-time index that year. The geomagnetic storm was the result of two powerful Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs). It produced a strong long lasting negative storm phase over Greenland with a dominant energy input in the polar cap. We employed global navigation satellite system (GNSS) networks, geomagnetic observatories, and a specific ionosonde station in Greenland. We complemented the approach with spaceborne measurements in order to map the state and variability of the Arctic ionosphere. In situ observations from the Canadian CASSIOPE (CAScade, Smallsat and IOnospheric Polar Explorer) satellite's ion mass spectrometer were used to derive ion flow data from the polar cap topside ionosphere during the event. Our research specifically found that (1) thermospheric O/N-2 measurements demonstrated significantly lower values over the Greenland sector than prior to the storm time. (2) An increased ion flow in the topside ionosphere was observed during the negative storm phase. (3) Negative storm phase was a direct consequence of energy input into the polar cap. (4) Polar patch formation was significantly decreased during the negative storm phase. This paper addresses the physical processes that can be responsible for this ionospheric storm development in the northern high latitudes. We conclude that ionospheric heating due to the CME's energy input caused changes in the polar atmosphere resulting in Ne upwelling, which was the major factor in high-latitude ionosphere dynamics for this storm.

Abstract:This work investigates the ionospheric response to the March 2023 geomagnetic storm over American and Asian sectors from total electron content (TEC), rate of TEC index, ionospheric heights, Swarm plasma density, radio occultation profiles of Formosat-7/Cosmic-2 (F7/C2), Fabry-Perot interferometer driven neutral winds, and E region electric field. During the storm's main phase, post-sunset equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) extend to higher latitudes in the western American longitudes, showing significant longitudinal differences in the American sector. Over the Indian longitudes, suppression of post-sunset irregularities is observed, attributed to the westward prompt penetration electric field (PPEF). At the early recovery phase, the presence of post-midnight/near-sunrise EPBs till post-sunrise hours in the American sector is associated with the disturbance of dynamo-electric fields (DDEF). Additionally, a strong consistency between F7/C2 derived amplitude scintillation (S4) ≥ 0.5 and EPB occurrences is observed. Furthermore, a strong eastward electric field induced an increase in daytime TEC beyond the equatorial ionization anomaly crest in the American region, which occurred during the storm's main phase. Both the Asian and American sectors exhibit negative ionospheric storms and inhibition of ionospheric irregularities at the recovery phase, which is dominated by the disturbance dynamo effect due to equatorward neutral winds. A slight increase in TEC in the Asian sector during the recovery phase could be explained by the combined effect of DDEF and thermospheric composition change. Overall, storm-time ionospheric variations are controlled by the combined effects of PPEF and DDEF. This study may further contribute to understanding the ionospheric responses under the influence of storm-phase and LT-dependent electric fields.

Abstract:This paper investigates the midlatitude ionospheric disturbances over the American/Atlantic longitude sector during an intense geomagnetic storm on 23 April 2023. The study utilized a combination of ground‐based observations (Global Navigation Satellite System total electron content and ionosonde) along with measurements from multiple satellite missions (GOLD, Swarm, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program, and TIMED/GUVI) to analyze storm‐time electrodynamics and neutral dynamics. We found that the storm main phase was characterized by distinct midlatitude ionospheric density gradient structures as follows: (a) In the European‐Atlantic longitude sector, a significant midlatitude bubble‐like ionospheric super‐depletion structure (BLISS) was observed after sunset. This BLISS appeared as a low‐density channel extending poleward/westward and reached ∼40° geomagnetic latitude, corresponding to an APEX height of ∼5,000 km. (b) Coincident with the BLISS, a dynamic storm‐enhanced density plume rapidly formed and decayed at local afternoon in the North American sector, with the plume intensity being doubled and halved in just a few hours. (c) The simultaneous occurrence of these strong yet opposite midlatitude gradient structures could be mainly attributed to common key drivers of prompt penetration electric fields and subauroral polarization stream electric fields. This shed light on the important role of storm‐time electrodynamic processes in shaping global ionospheric disturbances.

Ionospheric irregularity behavior during the September 6–10, 2017 magnetic storm over Brazilian equatorial–low latitudes

Abstract:The September 6–10, 2017 two-step magnetic storm was caused by an X9 solar flare followed by a CME. The SSC that occurred at 23:43 UT on day 06 when Sym-H reached about 50 nT, was due to a sudden increase in solar wind. The first step of the storm was caused by a Bz southward incursion on day 07. The magnetic index Kp reached 08, and the Sym-H magnetic index reached a minimum value of − 146 nT on day 08 at 01:08 UT, ending the main phase. On day 07, the solar wind intensified once again and the auroral index AE reached 2500 nT. During the recovery phase of this first storm, there was another Bz southward incursion on day 08 at 13:56 UT when Sym-H reached − 115 nT, and Kp reached a value of 08.33, marking the second step of the storm. In this work, the ionospheric irregularity over São Luís (02.5°S, 44.3°W, dip lat − 04.67°) was studied using data from the VHF, Digisonde and GPS receivers. Electron density data from the satellite SWARM-A were also analyzed for those orbits close to São Luís, and they presented large fluctuations during the storm night of 07/08. To analyze the latitudinal effects of the storm on the plasma irregularities, GPS data from 6 Novatel receivers were used. The vertical plasma drifts during daytime hours were determined using magnetometer data and during the evening using ionogram data. Compared to the ‘quiet’ days of September 2017, the VHF and GPS S4 amplitude scintillation indices increased substantially during the night of 07/08 when there was a strong intensification in the vertical plasma drift due to a prompt penetration under shielding magnetospheric electric field of eastward polarity. On the other hand, on the night of 08/09 the ionospheric scintillation was completely inhibited due to the disturbance dynamo electric field of westward polarity associated with the first and second storms. The irregularity zonal drifts measured by a VHF receiver around 24 UT (21 LT) were eastward on the nights of 05/06 and 06/07; however, during the night of 07/08, it reversed to westward.

The 2022 Starlink Geomagnetic Storms: Global Thermospheric Response to a High‐Latitude Ionospheric Driver

Abstract:In this study, we present ionospheric observations of field‐aligned currents from AMPERE and the ESA Swarm A satellite, in conjunction with high‐resolution thermospheric density measurements from accelerometers on board Swarm C and GRACE‐FO, for the third and 4 February 2022 geomagnetic storms that led to the loss of 38 Starlink internet satellites. We study the global storm time response of the thermospheric density enhancements, including their decay and latitudinal distribution. We find that the thermospheric density enhances globally in response to high‐latitude energy input from the magnetosphere‐solar wind system and takes at least a full day to recover to pre‐storm density levels. We also find that the greatest density perturbations occur at polar latitudes consistent with the magnetosphere‐ionosphere dayside cusp, and that there appeared to be a saturation of the thermospheric density during the geomagnetic storm on the fourth. Our results highlight the critical importance of high‐latitude ionospheric observations when diagnosing potentially hazardous conditions for low‐Earth‐orbit satellites.

Abstract:Magnetic storm, ionospheric storm, atmospheric storm, and electrical storm are the components of a geospace storm resulting from a solar storm. In the literature, the main attention is paid to the analysis of severe and extreme geospace storms. It is these storms that have the greatest impact on the Earth–atmosphere–ionosphere–magnetosphere system. They are most dangerous for space-based and ground-based technological systems. Such storms have a significant impact on human well-being and health. Minor and moderate storms are much less studied than severe and extreme ones. There are good reasons to believe that such storms can have some impact on the systems and people. It is important that the frequency of occurrence of moderate storms is much greater than the frequency of occurrence of severe storms. All this determined the relevance of this work, which consists in the study of magnetic disturbances that arise during moderate geospace storms, which receive undeservedly little attention. The purpose of this paper is to analyze on a global scale the temporal variations of geomagnetic field components during moderate magnetic storms on April 28–29 and May 1–2, 2023. The latitudinal dependence of the geomagnetic field components temporal variations during two moderate magnetic storms in April–May 2023 and on reference days was analyzed on a global scale using the data of the global network of Intermagnet stations. The limits of fluctuations in the level of the geomagnetic field under quiet conditions and during moderate storms were estimated. The range of variations in the geomagnetic field level under quiet conditions decreased from 200–260 to 30–50 nT with decreasing geographic latitude. During the storms, these limits increased 1.3–2.1 times. The variations in the level of components at stations equidistant from the equator were close. This is true for both the Western and Eastern Hemispheres. The fluctuations of the geomagnetic field level at the stations operating approximately at the same latitude but in different hemispheres were also close.

Abstract:The ionospheric equivalent currents in the high latitudes and the auroral electrojet system during the geomagnetic storm on July 15–16, 2000 are analyzed by using geomagnetic data from IMAGE chain. The large-scale vortices of equivalent currents are observed in the storm. The vortices on the dusk side of ionosphere correspond to four-celled pattern of plasma convection associated with NBZ, region I and region II field-aligned currents. Only one vortex can be found on the dawn side of ionosphere after interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns southward. In the initial phase of the storm, the center of eastward electrojets tends to shift equatorward. It arrives at 58.62° latitude of corrected geomagnetic coordinates (CGM). The westward electrojets are strong in the main phase. The center of westward electrojets in this period moves equatorward and may be beyond the southernmost station (56.45°) of the chain.
Case Study of Ionospheric Fluctuation over Mid-Latitude Region During One Large Magnetic Storm

Abstract:From Nov. 6 to 10, 2004, a large number of solar events occurred, which triggered many solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These CMEs caused two large geomagnetic storms and continuous energy proton events. During this period, one large positive ionospheric storm happened over the East-Asian region on Nov. 8, 2004. On Nov. 10, 2004, a strong spread-F was observed by the ionosonde located in the mid-latitude region of East China and Japan, and the ionospheric fluctuation over the ionosonde stations derived from GPS observation was also obvious. In this report, the characteristics of the spatial distribution of the ionosphere fluctuation and its temporal evolution are studied using the parameter of the rate of total electron content (ROT) derived from dual-frequency GPS measurement. Strong fluctuating activity of the ionosphere was found over the mid-latitude region in the southern and northern hemispheres between longitudes of 100°E and 180°E during the magnetic storm period on Nov. 10, 2004, and a regular movement of the disturbing region was observed. In the end, the reason of the ionospheric fluctuation during this magnetic storm is analyzed.

Abstract:Equatorial ionospheric irregularities have the potential to disrupt radio communications and satellite-based navigation. The influence of geomagnetic storms on these disturbances remains not fully understood, particularly in how they may initiate or inhibit the irregularities (also called Equatorial Plasma Bubbles, EPBs). Enhanced predictive capabilities require comprehensive studies of the ionosphere's behavior, especially within the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) zone, where such irregularities are more pronounced. This study examines the effect of the November 3, 2021, geomagnetic storm on equatorial ionospheric irregularities in the F region over South America. We used data from multiple instruments, including GPS, GOLD, ICON, ionosondes, SuperDARN, and AMPERE, to analyze the role of the storm-time electric fields in the day-to-day dynamics of EPBs. We found that irregularities were suppressed during the storm's main and recovery phases. Our results suggest that the inhibition of ionospheric irregularities in the F region may be associated with a combination of westward under-shielding penetration electric field and disturbance dynamo electric fields. The present study may contribute to advancing our understanding of the ionospheric response to geomagnetic storms and to develop better predictive models for space weather impacts.

Abstract:Geomagnetic storms are extreme space weather events, which have considerable impacts on the ionosphere and power transmission systems. In this paper, the ionospheric responses to the geomagnetic storm on 22 June 2015, are analyzed from ground-based and satellite-based Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) observations as well as observational data of digital ionosondes, and the main physical mechanisms of the ionospheric disturbances observed during the geomagnetic storm are discussed. Salient positive and negative storms are observed from vertical total electron content (VTEC) based on ground-based GNSS observations at different stages of the storm. Combining topside observations of Low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) satellites (GRACE and MetOp satellites) with different orbital altitudes and corresponding ground-based observations, the ionospheric responses above and below the orbits are studied during the storm. To obtain VTEC from the slant TEC between Global Positioning System (GPS) and LEO satellites, we employ a multi-layer mapping function, which can effectively reduce the overall error caused by the single-layer geometric assumption where the horizontal gradient of the ionosphere is not considered. The results show that the topside observations of the GRACE satellite with a lower orbit can intuitively detect the impact caused by the fluctuation of the F2 peak height (hmF2). At the same time, the latitude range corresponding to the peak value of the up-looking VTEC on the event day becomes wider, which is the precursor of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA). However, no obvious response is observed in the up-looking VTEC from MetOp satellites with higher orbits, which indicates that the VTEC responses to the geomagnetic storm mainly take place below the orbit of MetOp satellites.

Abstract:The sensitivity of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers to ionospheric disturbances and their constant growth are nowadays resulting in an increased concern of GNSS-users about the impacts of ionospheric disturbances at mid-latitudes. The geomagnetic storm of June 2015 is an example of a rare phenomenon of a spill-over of equatorial plasma bubbles well North from their habitual. We study the occurrence of small- and medium-scale irregularities in the North Atlantic Eastern-Mediterranean mid- and low-latitudinal zone by analysing the behaviour of the amplitude scintillation index S4 and of the rate of total electron content index (ROTI) during such a storm. In addition, large scale perturbations of the ionospheric electron density were studied using ground and space-born instruments, thus characterizing a complex perturbation behaviour over the region mentioned above. The multi-source data allows us to characterize the impact of irregularities of different scales to better understand the ionospheric dynamics and stress the importance of a proper monitoring of the ionosphere in the studied region.

Abstract:To solve the ill-posed and accuracy problems experienced by global navigation satellite system (GNSS) computerized ionosphere tomography (CIT), this study proposes the use of the ionospheric profile data of COSMIC-2 as the initial scale factor to constrain GNSS data. At present, studies are lacking on long-term data volume statistics and accuracy assessment of COSMIC-2 ionospheric profile products. Therefore, we calculated the data volume statistics and assessed the ionospheric quality of the COSMIC-2 data for the whole year of 2020. We used incoherent scattering radar (ISR) and ionosonde data to evaluate the quality of the COSMIC-2 ionospheric profile data. To verify the accuracy and reliability of the CIT algorithm for COSMIC-2 ionosphere profile-constrained GNSS data, the American region was selected. On the plane, the tomographic results were superimposed and compared with the global ionospheric map (GIM). The root mean square (rms) of the vertical total electron content (VTEC) difference in the six periods was 0.68, 0.97, 0.63, 0.86, 0.76, and 0.82 total electron content unit (TECU), respectively. In the vertical direction, the scale factor that was not involved in the CIT was compared with the ratio of total electron contents (TECs) in each layer to the total TEC. The average difference of the ratio factors in the four periods was 3.72%, 2.79%, 1.80%, 3.05%, 1.99%, and 2.37%, respectively. Finally, an intermediate-level geomagnetic storm that occurred on July 25, 2020, was selected for analysis, and the 3-D ionospheric morphological changes and evolution characteristics of the Australian region during this geomagnetic storm were studied.

Abstract:This study presents the observations of midlatitude plasma irregularities over Eastern Asia during a moderate magnetic storm on 16 July 2003. Multi-instrumental observations, including the ground-based ionosondes, the GNSS networks, and the CHAMP and ROCSAT-1 satellites, were utilized to investigate the occurrence and characteristics of midlatitude plasma irregularities. The midlatitude strong spread F (SSF) mainly occurred in the midnight–morning sector as observed by ionosondes over Japan during this storm. SSF was related to plasma depletions, which is also recorded by GNSS network in the form of the enhancement of the rate of total electron content (TEC) change index (ROTI). The possible mechanism for the generation of SSF is that the enhanced eastward electric fields, associated with the prompt penetration electric fields and disturbance dynamo electric fields, cause the uplift and latitudinal extension of equatorial plasma bubbles (EPBs) to generate the observed midlatitude SSF further. Meanwhile, plasma density increased significantly under the influence of this storm. In addition, other common type of spread F, frequency spread F (FSF), was observed over Japan on the non-storm day and/or at high latitude station WK545, which seems to be closely related to the coupling of medium-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances (MSTIDs) and sporadic E (Es) layer. The above results indicate that various types of midlatitude spread F can be produced by different physical mechanisms. It is found that SSF can significantly affect the performance of radio wave propagation compared with FSF. Our results show that space weather events have a significant influence on the day-to-day variability of the occurrence and characteristics of ionospheric F-region irregularities at midlatitudes.
