Abstract:Background:The purpose of this study was to determine whether monitoring Bispectral Index (BIS) would affect recovery parameters in patients undergoing inpatient surgery. Methods:Anesthesia providers (n = 69) were randomly assigned to one of two groups, a BIS or non-BIS control group. A randomized crossover design was used, with reassignment at monthly intervals for 7 months. Duration of time in the postanesthesia care unit, time from the end of surgery to leaving the operating room, and incidence of delayed recovery (> 50 min in recovery) were compared in patients treated intraoperatively with or without BIS monitoring. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance, unpaired t test, or chi-square test as appropriate. Results:One thousand five hundred eighty patients in an academic medical center were studied. The mean BIS in the monitored group was 47. No differences were found in recovery parameters between the BIS-monitored group and the control group when comparisons were made using all subjects or when data were analyzed within anesthetic subgroups stratified by anesthetic agent or duration of anesthesia. There were some small reductions in the intraoperative concentration of sevoflurane (but not isoflurane). Conclusions:The use of BIS monitoring for inpatients undergoing a wide variety of surgical procedures in an academic medical center had some minor effects on intraoperative anesthetic use but had no impact on recovery parameters.
Ground Tire Rubber Modified by Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate Copolymer: Processing, Physico-Mechanical Properties, Volatile Organic Compounds Emission and Recycling Possibility

Abstract:Ground tire rubber (GTR) was reclaimed and modified with 10 phr of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer via low-temperature extrusion process. Processing, physico-mechanical properties, volatile organic compounds emission, and recycling possibility were investigated. In order to better understand the impact of used modifiers, their efficiency was compared with trans-polyoctenamer, which is an additive that is commercially dedicated to waste rubber recycling. The results showed that a relatively small amount of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer improves the mechanical properties of modified reclaimed GTR and also allows further recycling by multiple processing without the deterioration of performance after three cycles.

Abstract:Traditional crosslinked diene rubber has excellent thermal-mechanical properties and solvent resistance, yet it is incapable of being recycled via universal molding or injecting. Vitrimers, a new class of covalently crosslinked polymer networks, can be topologically rearranged with the associative exchange mechanism, endowing them with thermoplasticity. Introducing the concept of vitrimers into crosslinked networks for the recycling of rubbers is currently an attractive research topic. However, designing tailored rubber vitrimers still remains a challenge. Herein, polybutadiene (PB) vitrimers with different structures were prepared via partial epoxidation of double bonds and ring-opening esterification reactions. Their mechanical and relaxation properties were investigated. It was found that the increasing crosslinking density can increase tensile strength and activation energy for altering the network topology. The influence of side-group effects on their relaxation properties shows that an increase in the number of epoxy groups on the polybutadiene chain can increase the chance of an effective exchange of disulfide units. This work provides a simple network design which can tune vitrimer properties via altering the crosslinking density and side-group effects.
Reactive Sintering of Ground Tire Rubber (GTR) Modified by a Trans-Polyoctenamer Rubber and Curing Additives

Abstract:The proposed method of ground tire rubber (GTR) utilization involves the application of trans-polyoctenamer rubber (TOR), a commercially available waste rubber modifier. The idea was to investigate the influence of various curing additives (sulfur, N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazole sulfenamide (CBS), dibenzothiazole disulfide (MBTS) and di-(2-ethyl)hexylphosphorylpolysulfide (SDT)) on curing characteristics, physico-mechanical, thermal, acoustic properties as well as the morphology of modified GTR, in order to evaluate the possibility of reclaiming GTR and the co-cross-linking between applied components. The results showed that the presence of the modifier without the addition of curing additives hinders the physico-mechanical properties of revulcanized GTR. The addition of SDT, CBS, MBTS and sulfur change the melting kinetics of TOR, indicating partial degradation and/or co-cross-linking between components. In the studied conditions, the best mechanical properties were obtained by the samples cured with sulfur. The morphology analysis, combined with the physico-mechanical results, indicated that when the surface of the GTR is more developed, obtained by the addition of TOR, the properties of the GTR improve.
Processing and Mechanical Properties of Highly Filled PP/GTR Compounds

Abstract:Ground rubber from automobile tires is very difficult to recycle due to the cross-linking of the macromolecules and thus the lack of thermoplastic properties. The research consisted of assessing the processing possibility via the injection of highly filled PP/GTR compounds modified with 1.5 wt.% 2.5-dimethyl-2.5-di-(tert-butylperoxy)-hexane. GTR dosing ranged from 30 wt.% up to 90 wt.%. The evaluation of the processing properties of the obtained materials was carried out on the basis of the melt flow index test results and the signals recorded during processing by the injection molding by temperature and pressure sensors placed in the mold. The influence of the applied modifier on the changes in the mechanical properties of PP/GTR was determined with hardness, impact and static tensile tests. Moreover, thermal properties were obtained by the differential scanning calorimetry method. It has been found that it is possible to efficiently process compounds with high GTR content using injection molding. The presence of the filler allows to significantly reduce the cooling time in the injection mold and thus the time of the production cycle. It has been confirmed that 2.5-dimethyl-2.5-di-(tert-butylperoxy)-hexane modifies the rheological properties of PP and thus the PP/GTR composition. The lower viscosity of the matrix results in a more accurate bonding with the developed surface of the GTR grains, which results in better mechanical properties of the rubber-filled polypropylene.
Production of Thermoplastic Elastomers Based on Recycled PE and Ground Tire Rubber: Morphology, Mechanical Properties and Effect of Compatibilizer Addition

Abstract:Abstract Constant growth of waste polymers around the world leads to several environmental problems. This is why solutions to reuse these high amounts of materials available must be developed. In this work, highly filled (up to 90 wt.%) recycled polyethylene (R-PE)/ground tire rubber (GTR) thermoplastic elastomers were prepared by extrusion compounding and injection molding. To improve on processability and overall properties, two copolymers (Engage 8180 and Vestenamer 8012) were added as compatibilizers for comparison. SEM results showed that compatibilizer addition changed the blend morphology. In all cases, the mechanical properties in tension and flexion decreased with GTR addition. It was also observed that the addition of a copolymer improved on some properties (such as elongation at break), but Engage 8180 showed better compatibilization effect than Vestenamer 8012 which was confirmed from SEM analysis, while other properties (tensile strength, Young's and flexural modulus) were reduced due to lower GTR and compatibilizer moduli. For impact strength, negligible variation was observed below 40 wt.% GTR. However, the samples did not break for GTR contents above 60 wt.%. Density increased with GTR content, while Shore A and D hardness decreased. Overall, the addition of a compatibilizer mostly enabled to produce compounds at higher GTR contents (above 70 wt.%). From the result obtained, it can be concluded that recycled materials can be used to produce blends with reasonable quality for automotive, packaging and construction applications since the mechanical properties can be optimized via formulation over a very wide range of GTR (0–90 wt.%).

Abstract:Development of sustainable thermoplastic elastomers based on thermoplastic polyurethane and ground tire rubber. In this research, blends are prepared of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), ground tire rubber (GTR) and its devulcanized version (dGTR). The primary objective is to produce thermoplastic elastomers wherein TPU is partially substituted by GTR or dGTR obtained from used tires, thereby forming a blend with a favorable cost/value ratio and a smaller environmental footprint. Throughout the experiment, the rubber content of the blends is varied between 0 and 50 wt% and the effect on mechanical properties is investigated. The blends are compounded with a twin‐screw extruder, after which sheet samples are produced by injection molding. With a view to a possible future industrial application, it is important that both the compounding and the injection molding of the specimens are easy to perform, even with a 50 wt% filler content. Increasing the amount of rubber phase reduce the tensile strength and elongation at break of the blends. Unfortunately, devulcanization did not significantly improve the properties of the blends. Overall, even at a (d)GTR content of 50 wt%, an elongation at break of 300% is achieved, which allows the use of the blends as thermoplastic elastomers. In addition, dynamic tests show that the rubber phase increases the damping capacity of the samples.

Abstract:In this study, our focus was on developing and investigating rubber recipes that are suitable for devulcanized ground tire rubber (dGTR). Devulcanized rubber has a powdery or sticky uncured rubber-like appearance depending on the extent of main-chain degradation that occurs with selective crosslinking scission. Still, it has a significantly shorter scorch time than a new rubber compound. Therefore, our primary goal was to slow down the vulcanization process of dGTR and improve its mechanical properties via recipe development. We formulated several recipes (sulfur-, peroxide-, and phenolic resin-based) and studied the vulcanization process and the main properties of the revulcanized rubber sheets. We observed that the vulcanization process could be altered with different vulcanization methods: using peroxide and vulcanizing resin extended the process significantly. Peroxide vulcanization also provided enhanced elongation compared to sulfuric systems. With a balance of properties in mind, we selected a semi-efficient sulfur-based recipe and studied the characteristics of natural rubber/dGTR mixtures with the help of plasticizer oils. We successfully replaced a notable portion of natural rubber with dGTR, maintaining its properties without much compromise.

Abstract:The application range of flexible polyurethane (PU) foams is comprehensive because of their versatility and flexibility in adjusting structure and performance. In addition to the investigations associated with further broadening of their potential properties, researchers are looking for new raw materials, beneficially originated from renewable resources or recycling. A great example of such a material is ground tire rubber (GTR)—the product of the material recycling of post-consumer car tires. To fully exploit the benefits of this material, it should be modified to enhance the interfacial interactions between PU and GTR. In the presented work, GTR particles were thermo-mechanically modified with the addition of fresh and waste rapeseed oil in the reactive extrusion process. The introduction of modified GTR particles into a flexible PU matrix caused a beneficial 17–28% decrease in average cell diameters. Such an effect caused an even 5% drop in thermal conductivity coefficient values, enhancing thermal insulation performance. The application of waste oil resulted in the superior mechanical performance of composites compared to the fresh one and thermo-mechanical modification without oils. The compressive and tensile performance of composites filled with waste oil-modified GTR was almost the same as for the unfilled foam. Moreover, the introduction of ground tire rubber particles enhanced the thermal stability of neat polyurethane foam.

Effective Thermal-Oxidative Reclamation of Waste Tire Rubbers for Producing High-Performance Rubber Composites

Abstract:The disposal and accumulation of waste tire rubbers has a significant negative impact on the development of a circular economy and sustainable environment. To reuse and recycle ground tire rubber, we developed a thermal-oxidative reclamation process using a newly designed dynamic reclamation reactor. In the absence of any chemical agent, a high scission efficiency was achieved at a sol fraction of 66.53 wt % at 200 °C after 20 min from the thermal oxidation of GTR. The physical and chemical structural evolutions of GTR during the thermo-oxidation process were systemically investigated by monitoring the Mooney viscosity, sol–gel ratio, molecular weight, and chemical structure changes. The reclaimed ground tire rubber containing ultrafine fillers and soluble elastomer can be easily dispersed into a natural rubber matrix. The mechanical properties and aging resistance of the modified natural rubber were enhanced with the addition of up to 40 wt % reclaimed ground tire rubber. Dynamic Damping Properties of Thermoplastic Elastomers Based on EVA and Recycled Ground Tire Rubber

Abstract:Recycling waste tires being important for both economical and environmental reasons, ground tire rubber can be blended with other polymers, modifying their properties. In order to characterize and explain these modifications, an experimental study was carried out concerning the improvement in the dynamic damping properties when adding recycled ground tire rubber (GTR) fillers to an elastomeric matrix (ethylene vinyl acetate, EVA).To evaluate the influence of both the GTR and the porosity in a GTR/ EVA composite, three samples have been elaborated by injection:the EVA matrix alone, a GTR/EVA composite, and a GTR/EVA porous composite. Dynamic measurements of the samples were performed using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The Young’s modulus and loss factor of these materials are estimated using the frequency—temperature equivalence introduced by Williams—Landel—Ferry expanding the measurement of the dynamic properties over a wider range of frequencies. This method showed that in low-frequency bandwidth, the loss factor has been improved by the addition of GTR to the EVA matrix. The α-relaxation study showed lower activation energy for both the GTR-filled composites leading to the conclusion that the mobility of the polymer chains has been improved by addition of GTR. The impact behavior study carried out using a weight drop test experiment also concluded to better impact energy absorption for the GTR-filled composites at the expense of a larger maximum displacement.

Abstract:Nanosized particles have a large surface area to facilitate interfacial contact and thus are promising fillers for polymers. However, poor dispersion of nanoparticles limits the reinforcement effect. Herein, by rationally tailoring the internal porous structures, specific surface area, and surface chemistry, we prepared porous carbon fiber (PCF) filler from poly(acrylonitrile-block-methyl methacrylate) (PAN-b-PMMA) block copolymers. PCF had a three-dimensional porous network and provided improved filler-matrix interactions. Owing to the enhanced filler-matrix interlocking, large interfacial contact area, and strong interfacial affinity induced by nitrogen and oxygen doping, PCF was uniformly dispersed in rubber. Uncured nature rubber composites containing 5 parts of PCF per hundred parts of rubber (phr) showed 4.3 times higher Young's modulus and twice the tensile strength at 300% strain compared to the neat rubber. PCF represents an effective reinforcing filler for polymers.
Novel Design of Eco-Friendly High-Performance Thermoplastic Elastomer Based on Polyurethane and Ground Tire Rubber toward Upcycling of Waste Tires

Abstract:Waste rubber tires are an area of global concern in relation to reducing the consumption of petrochemical products and environmental pollution. Herein, eco-friendly high-performance thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) elastomers were successfully in-situ synthesized through the incorporation of ground tire rubber (GTR). The excellent wet-skid resistance of PU/GTR elastomer was achieved by using mixed polycaprolactone polyols with Mn = 1000 g/mol (PCL-1K) and PCL-2K as soft segments. More importantly, an efficient solution to balance the contradiction between dynamic heat build-up and wet-skid resistance in PU/GTR elastomers was that low heat build-up was realized through the limited friction between PU molecular chains, which was achieved with the help of the network structure formed from GTR particles uniformly distributed in the PU matrix. Impressively, the tanδ at 60 °C and the DIN abrasion volume (Δrel) of the optimal PU/GTR elastomer with 59.5% of PCL-1K and 5.0% of GTR were 0.03 and 38.5 mm3, respectively, which are significantly lower than the 0.12 and 158.32 mm3 for pure PU elastomer, indicating that the PU/GTR elastomer possesses extremely low rolling resistance and excellent wear resistance. Meanwhile, the tanδ at 0 °C of the above-mentioned PU/GTR elastomer was 0.92, which is higher than the 0.80 of pure PU elastomer, evidencing the high wet-skid resistance. To some extent, the as-prepared PU/GTR elastomer has effectively solved the "magic triangle" problem in the tire industry. Moreover, this novel research will be expected to make contributions in the upcycling of waste tires.

Abstract:Recycling and recovery of waste tires is a serious environmental problem since vulcanized rubbers require several years to degrade naturally and remain for long periods of time in the environment. This is associated to a complex three dimensional (3D) crosslinked structure and the presence of a high number of different additives inside a tire formulation. Most end-of-life tires are discarded as waste in landfills taking space or incinerated for energy recovery, especially for highly degraded rubber wastes. All these options are no longer acceptable for the environment and circular economy. However, a great deal of progress has been made on the sustainability of waste tires via recycling as this material has high potential being a source of valuable raw materials. Extensive researches were performed on using these end-of-life tires as fillers in civil engineering applications (concrete and asphalt), as well as blending with polymeric matrices (thermoplastics, thermosets or virgin rubber). Several grinding technologies, such as ambient, wet or cryogenic processes, are widely used for downsizing waste tires and converting them into ground tire rubber (GTR) with a larger specific surface area. Here, a focus is made on the use of GTR as a partial replacement in virgin rubber compounds. The paper also presents a review of the possible physical and chemical surface treatments to improve the GTR adhesion and interaction with different matrices, including rubber regeneration processes such as thermomechanical, microwave, ultrasonic and thermochemical producing regenerated tire rubber (RTR). This review also includes a detailed discussion on the effect of GTR/RTR particle size, concentration and crosslinking level on the curing, rheological, mechanical, aging, thermal, dynamic mechanical and swelling properties of rubber compounds. Finally, a conclusion on the current situation is provided with openings for future works.
Investigating the Impact of Curing System on Structure-Property Relationship of Natural Rubber Modified with Brewery By-Product and Ground Tire Rubber

Abstract:The application of wastes as a filler/reinforcement phase in polymers is a new strategy to modify the performance properties and reduce the price of biocomposites. The use of these fillers, coming from agricultural waste (cellulose/lignocellulose-based fillers) and waste rubbers, constitutes a method for the management of post-consumer waste. In this paper, highly-filled biocomposites based on natural rubber (NR) and ground tire rubber (GTR)/brewers' spent grain (BSG) hybrid reinforcements, were prepared using two different curing systems: (i) sulfur-based and (ii) dicumyl peroxide (DCP). The influence of the amount of fillers (in 100/0, 50/50, and 0/100 ratios in parts per hundred of rubber) and type of curing system on the final properties of biocomposites was evaluated by the oscillating disc rheometer, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, swelling behavior, tensile testing, and impedance tube measurements. The results show, that the scorch time and the optimum curing time values of sulfur cured biocomposites are affected by the change of the hybrid filler ratio while using the DCP curing system, and the obtained values do not show significant variations. The results conclude that the biocomposites cured with sulfur have better physico-mechanical and acoustic absorption, and that the type of curing system does not influence their thermal stability. The overall analysis indicates that the difference in final properties of highly filled biocomposites cured with two different systems is mainly affected by the: (i) cross-linking efficiency, (ii) partial absorption and reactions between fillers and used additives, and (iii) affinity of additives to applied fillers.
Optimization of mechanical and dynamic-mechanical properties of electron beam irradiation of reclaimed tire rubber/poly (ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) nanocomposite by design of experiment

Abstract:Considering the high volume of tire consumption in the world, reuse of tire in the rubber industry is important from an economical and environmental point of view. For this purpose, nanocomposites were prepared successfully through the melt-mixing process based on thermoplastic polyethylene- co -vinyl acetate (EVA) and reclaimed tire rubber (RTR). The samples with different weight ratios of EVA and PTR (30/70, 40/60, and 50/50) and including Cloisite 30B organoclay (2, 4, and 6 phr) were cured through electron beam (EB) irradiation with doses of 100, 150, and 200 kGy. Two types of compatibilizers such as epoxidized natural rubber (ENR 50) and maleic anhydride-grafted ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA- g -MA) were employed to enhance the dispersion of nanoclay and its interaction with the polymer phases. To study the simultaneous effect of all parameters, their interactions and to reduce the number of samples, two-level partial factorial method with central points and ANOVA was used in Minitab software. The extent of nanolayer intercalation was evaluated using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results indicated the formation of intercalation structure of clay nanoplatelets. Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis was studied to analyze the elemental composition of the rubber–clay samples. The EDX maps confirmed the good distribution of nanoclay platelets. Furthermore, tensile test and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) were performed. The results of software-aided optimization showed that the highest mechanical properties and the lowest loss factor (Tanδ) max , at its maximum of two phases of the blends were obtained for a sample compatibilized with EVA- g -MA and including 50/50 EVA/RTR and 6 phr nanoclay cured under 200 kGy irradiation dose. The sample compatibilized with ENR50 under similar conditions was ranked next.
Thermo-oxidative exfoliation of carbon black from ground tire rubber as potential reinforcement in green tires

Abstract:Considering the balance between rapidly growing global tire demand and scarcity of natural resources, recycling and reclaiming techniques of tire rubber have become the state of the art. Herein, we set out to implement a self-designed thermo-oxidative reactor for the exfoliation of carbon black (CB) from ground tire rubber, which is efficiently functioned under a thermo-oxidative reclaiming condition without any additive. The exfoliation of CB from rubber vulcanizate was realized by scission of main chain, and of cross-linked network. The degree of scission was discussed through gel permeation chromatography and using Horikx theory. Sol fraction tremendously increased to 66.0% after thermo-oxidative reclamation at 200 °C for 20 min. Thermo-oxidative scission underwent through the oxidative cleavage of main chain, and of sulfur cross-links, proved by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The ultrafine exfoliation of CB from rubber proved by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The exfoliation was further improved by two roll milling. Exfoliated rubber was incorporated within tire rubber composites as a reinforcing material due to the core-shell structured CB, which was observed with increased effects to the rubber composites. This work presents a potential contribution to the industrial recycling for future applications and to control the pollution of waste tires.

Abstract:The amount of elastomeric waste, especially from tires is constantly increasing on a global scale. The recycling of these residua should be considered a priority. Compounding the waste rubbers with other polymers can be an excellent alternative to reuse waste materials. This procedure requires solving the issue of the lack of compatibility between the waste rubber particles and other polymers. Simultaneously, there is a claim for introducing biodegradable plastics materials to reduce their environmental impact. In this work, reclaimed rubber/poly(ε-caprolactone) (RR/PCL) blends are proposed to enhance the recycling and upcycling possibilities of waste rubbers. The results show that the addition of PCL to the RR allows obtaining blends with improved mechanical properties, good thermal stability, and enhanced interfacial compatibility between the used components. Structure and properties of the proposed RR/PCL have been studied by means of static and dynamic mechanical testing, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)-FTIR analysis.

Abstract:Novel green biodegradable thermoplastic natural rubber (GB-TPNR) based on natural rubber and polyester blends was prepared by dynamic vulcanization. The main objective was to improve mechanical and rheological properties, thermal stability and biodegradability of the natural rubber/polyester thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs). Three types of natural rubber: unmodified NR, and epoxidized natural rubbers with 25 and 50 mol % epoxide (i.e., ENR-25 and ENR-50); and two polyester types: polybutylene succinate (PBS) and poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene adipate) (PBSA) were used as blend components. It was found that the dynamically cured ENR-50/PBS blends exhibited superior mechanical, rheological, thermal and stress relaxation properties relative to ENR-25/PBS and unmodified NR/PBS TPVs. This is attributed to stronger chemical interactions between the polar functional groups of ENR-50 and PBS, which caused strong interfacial adhesion and hence the smallest vulcanized rubber domains dispersed in the PBS matrix. Furthermore, stress relaxation, thermal resistance, mechanical strength and degree of crystallinity of PBS phase increased with epoxide content in the modified rubber. Moreover, the dynamically blended ENR-50/PBSA showed larger vulcanized rubber domains along with poorer mechanical, relaxation and thermal properties but easier biodegradation than the ENR-50/PBS blend.

Abstract:Journal of Elastomers &Plastics, Ahead of Print. This study examines the use of waste and recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) along with micro-sized ground tire rubber (GTR) to produce a polymer matrix composite (PMC) material. The PMC materials are made in a Twin-screw extruder, with different ratios of rPET to GTR ranging from 90:10 to 50:50. In order to assess the performance of the newly created rPET-GTR matrix composite materials, the physical, mechanical properties are empirically observed. The thermal properties and crystallinity (Xc) of PMC materials are analysed using DSC. SEM and microscopic imaging are used to determine the characteristics of rPET-GTR composite materials, including elemental compositions like carbon, oxygen, and silicon. The functional group and chemical structure are confirmed through IR spectra analysis using FTIR techniques. The inclusion of micro-sized GTR has shown a significant effect on the physical (density = 1.306 - 1.208 g/cm3, water absorption = 1.76%–10.74%, and melt flow index = 8.12 - 12.79 gm/10 min), mechanical (tensile strength = 52.78 – 73.58 MPa, impact strength = 110.64 - 138.44 J/m, hardness = 56.14 - 76.37, and flexural modulus = 66.23 - 106.32 MPa), and thermal (melting temperature = 220.25°C–192.57°C, Xc = 20.30 to 30.58%) properties of rPET. These studies all work together to improve the performance of waste rPET and GTR materials by repurposing them. It helps to promote sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and expands the range of applications (automotive parts, building materials, sports equipment, electrical insulation and prosthetics) for rPET-based composites with potential uses in the polymer industries.
