Abstract:In the past 2 decades, an innovative and active field of surgical collaboration has been evolved and established combining the expertise of Neurosurgery and Rhinosurgery in treatment of different lesions affecting the anterior skull base together with the adjacent intranasal and intradural areas. Important prerequesites for this development were improvements of technical devices, definitions of transnasal surgical corridors and approvements in endonasal reconstruction e. g. by use of pedicled nasal mucosal flaps. Interdisciplinary surgical teams have been established constituting specialized centers of "rhino-neurosurgery". With growing experience of these groups, it could be shown that oncological results and perioperative complications were comparable to traditional surgery while at the same time, patient's morbidity could be reduced.The present review encompasses the recent literature focussing on the development, technical details, results and complications of "rhino-neurosurgery".

Abstract:Amphibolurus barbatus which occupies arid and mesic habitats elevates its panting threshold with increasing loss of body water, thereby minimizing water loss at the expense of thermoregulatory effectiveness. Change in panting threshold is greatest up to losses of body water of 6-8% of hydrated weight, after which adjustment of the threshold is of lesser magnitude. Amphibolurus muricatus, a species restricted to the more mesic regions of Australia, does not show any change of panting threshold with progressive dehydration.

Abstract:The Martian surface and shallow subsurface lacks stable liquid water, yet hygroscopic salts in the regolith may enable the transient formation of liquid brines. This study investigated the combined impact of water scarcity, UV exposure, and regolith depth on microbial survival under Mars-like environmental conditions. Both vegetative cells of Debaryomyces hansenii and Planococcus halocryophilus , alongside with spores of Aspergillus niger , were exposed to an experimental chamber simulating Martian environmental conditions (constant temperatures of about − 11 °C, low pressure of approximately 6 mbar, a CO 2 atmosphere, and 2 h of daily UV irradiation). We evaluated colony-forming units (CFU) and water content at three different regolith depths before and after exposure periods of 3 and 7 days, respectively. Each organism was tested under three conditions: one without the addition of salts to the regolith, one containing sodium chlorate, and one with sodium perchlorate. Our results reveal that the residual water content after the exposure experiments increased with regolith depth, along with the organism survival rates in chlorate-containing and salt-free samples. The survival rates of the three organisms in perchlorate-containing regolith were consistently lower for all organisms and depths compared to chlorate, with the most significant difference being observed at a depth of 10–12 cm, which corresponds to the depth with the highest residual water content. The postulated reason for this is an increase in the salt concentration at this depth due to the freezing of water, showing that for these organisms, perchlorate brines are more toxic than chlorate brines under the experimental conditions. This underscores the significance of chlorate salts when considering the habitability of Martian environments.

Abstract:There may be a chance of small-scale ephemeral liquid water formation on present day Mars, even though the current climate does not support the existence of larger bodies of water. Through a process called deliquescence, hygroscopic salts can enter solution by absorbing water vapor directly from the atmosphere. Due to the absence of in-situ deliquescence experiments so far, the most reliable way to forecast deliquescence is through atmospherical modeling, however, the locations and times when salty liquid water could emerge are not yet well known. In this paper we present our results of likely brine formation on Mars, their proposed locations and seasons, as well as the possible limiting factors. For our calculations we used the data of Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique Mars General Circulation Model version 5. The results show that from L$_s$ 35$^\circ$ - L$_s$ 160$^\circ$, between 9 PM and 11 PM there is a good chance for calcium perchlorate deliquescence above 30$^\circ$ N, while in this zone the ideal regions are concentrated mostly to Acidalia Planitia and Utopia Planitia between 1 AM and 3 AM. We found that in the Southern Hemisphere, between L$_s$ 195$^\circ$ and L$_s$ 320$^\circ$, there is a noticeable, but weaker band in the vicinity of 60$^\circ$ S, and both Argyre Planitia and Hellas Planitia show some chance for brine formation. According to our statistics the key limiting factor of deliquescence could be relative humidity in most cases. Our results suggest that during summer -- early fall seasons, there could be deliquescence in both hemispheres in specific areas from the late evening until the early morning hours. There are only few studies detailing the geological and temporal distribution of brine formation through deliquescence, thus this work could be used as a good guide for future landing site analysis or in choosing a specific location for further research.

Experimental Investigation of the Atmosphere-Regolith Water Cycle on Present-Day Mars

Abstract:The water content of the upper layers of the surface of Mars is not yet quantified. Laboratory simulations are the only feasible way to investigate this in a controlled way on Earth, and then compare it with remote and in situ observations of spacecrafts on Mars. Describing the processes that may induce changes in the water content of the surface is critical to determine the present-day habitability of the Martian surface, to understand the atmospheric water cycle, and to estimate the efficiency of future water extraction procedures from the regolith for In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU). This paper illustrates the application of the SpaceQ facility to simulate the near-surface water cycle under Martian conditions. Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) observations at Gale crater show a non-equilibrium situation in the atmospheric H2O volume mixing ratio (VMR) at night-time, and there is a decrease in the atmospheric water content by up to 15 g/m2 within a few hours. This reduction suggests that the ground may act at night as a cold sink scavenging atmospheric water. Here, we use an experimental approach to investigate the thermodynamic and kinetics of water exchange between the atmosphere, a non-porous surface (LN2-chilled metal), various salts, Martian regolith simulant, and mixtures of salts and simulant within an environment which is close to saturation. We have conducted three experiments: the stability of pure liquid water around the vicinity of the triple point is studied in experiment 1, as well as observing the interchange of water between the atmosphere and the salts when the surface is saturated; in experiment 2, the salts were mixed with Mojave Martian Simulant (MMS) to observe changes in the texture of the regolith caused by the interaction with hydrates and liquid brines, and to quantify the potential of the Martian regolith to absorb and retain water; and experiment 3 investigates the evaporation of pure liquid water away from the triple point temperature when both the air and ground are at the same temperature and the relative humidity is near saturation. We show experimentally that frost can form spontaneously on a surface when saturation is reached and that, when the temperature is above 273.15 K (0 °C), this frost can transform into liquid water, which can persist for up to 3.5 to 4.5 h at Martian surface conditions. For comparison, we study the behavior of certain deliquescent salts that exist on the Martian surface, which can increase their mass between 32% and 85% by absorption of atmospheric water within a few hours. A mixture of these salts in a 10% concentration with simulant produces an aggregated granular structure with a water gain of approximately 18- to 50-wt%. Up to 53% of the atmospheric water was captured by the simulated ground, as pure liquid water, hydrate, or brine.

Abstract:Life in hyperarid regions has adapted to extreme water scarcity through mechanisms like salt deliquescence. While halite (NaCl) crusts have been intensively studied and identified as one of the last habitats under hyperarid conditions, other less common hygroscopic salt crusts remain unexplored. Here, we investigated newly discovered deliquescent soil surfaces in the Atacama Desert, containing substantial amounts of nitrates, to evaluate their habitability for microorganisms. We characterized the environment with respect to water availability and biogeochemistry. Microbial abundances and composition were determined by cell cultivation experiments, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and membrane phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis, while microbial activity was assessed by analyzing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the molecular composition of organic matter. Our findings reveal that, while the studied hygroscopic salts provide temporary water, microbial abundances and activity are lower in the studied soil surfaces than in non-deliquescent soil surfaces. Intriguingly, the deliquescent crusts are enriched in geochemically degraded organic matter, indicated by the molecular composition. We conclude that high nitrate concentrations in the hyperarid soils suppress microbial activity but preserve eolian-derived biomolecules. These insights are important for assessing the habitability and searching for life in hyperarid environments on Earth and beyond.

Abstract:An electrically gated Na+ channel can be made to appear in the membrane of the Xenopus laevis oocyte by simple depolarization. This membrane normally responds passively to imposed transmembrane currents with resting potentials around -60 mV, but when it is held depolarized to more than about +30 mV it becomes possible to obtain long-lasting regenerative depolarizations up to +80 mV; these depolarizations can last as long as 20 min. This potential is due to an "induction" of a Na+-dependent channel that is electrically gated open and closed. Its threshold for opening is about -20 mV and it is selective for Na+ over Cs+ and choline+ but is blocked by relatively small quantities of Li+. When a long voltage clamp step to a positive potential under ENa (+70 to +90 mV) is applied, an inward current is observed for many minutes, implying that this channel does not have an inactivation mechanism. The inward Na+ current is blocked by 0.50 mM tetrodotoxin. When the membrane is held at or near resting potential, the excitability will disappear with time, but it can be made to reappear by again depolarizing the membrane.
Constraining the potential liquid water environment at Gale crater, Mars

Abstract:The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) has now made continuous in-situ meteorological measurements for several martian years at Gale crater, Mars. Of importance in the search for liquid formation are REMS' measurements of ground temperature and in-air measurements of temperature and relative humidity, which is with respect to ice. Such data can constrain the surface and subsurface stability of brines. Here we use updated calibrations to REMS data and consistent relative humidity comparisons (i.e., w.r.t. liquid vs w.r.t. ice) to investigate the potential formation of surface and subsurface liquids throughout MSL's traverse. We specifically study the potential for the deliquescence of calcium perchlorate. Our data analysis suggests that surface brine formation is not favored within the first 1648 sols as there are only two times (sols 1232 and 1311) when humidity-temperature conditions were within error consistent with a liquid phase. On the other hand, modeling of the subsurface environment would support brine production in the shallow subsurface. Indeed, we find that the shallow subsurface for terrains with low thermal inertia ($\Gamma\lesssim 300$ J m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ s$^{-1/2}$) may be occasionally favorable to brine formation through deliquescence. Terrains with $\Gamma\lesssim175$ J m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ s$^{-1/2}$ and albedos of $\gtrsim0.25$ are the most apt to subsurface brine formation. Should brines form, they would occur around Ls 100$^{\circ}$. Their predicted properties would not meet the Special nor Uncertain Region requirements, as such they would not be potential habitable environments to life as we know it.

Abstract:Eurotium halophilicum is psychrotolerant, halophilic, and one of the most-extreme xerophiles in Earth's biosphere. We already know that this ascomycete grows close to 0 °C, at high NaCl, and-under some conditions-down to 0.651 water-activity. However, there is a paucity of information about how it achieves this extreme stress tolerance given the dynamic water regimes of the surface habitats on which it commonly occurs. Here, against the backdrop of global climate change, we investigated the biophysical interactions of E. halophilicum with its extracellular environment using samples taken from the surfaces of library books. The specific aims were to examine its morphology and extracellular environment (using scanning electron microscopy for visualisation and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry to identify chemical elements) and investigate interactions with water, ions, and minerals (including analyses of temperature and relative humidity conditions and determinations of salt deliquescence and water activity of extracellular brine). We observed crystals identified as eugsterite (Na4Ca(SO4)3·2H2O) and mirabilite (Na2SO4·10H2O) embedded within extracellular polymeric substances and provide evidence that E. halophilicum uses salt deliquescence to maintain conditions consistent with its water-activity window for growth. In addition, it utilizes a covering of hair-like microfilaments that likely absorb water and maintain a layer of humid air adjacent to the hyphae. We believe that, along with compatible solutes used for osmotic adjustment, these adaptations allow the fungus to maintain hydration in both space and time. We discuss these findings in relation to the conservation of books and other artifacts within the built environment, spoilage of foods and feeds, the ecology of E. halophilicum in natural habitats, and the current episode of climate change.
Distribution and habitability of (meta)stable brines on present-day Mars

Abstract:Special Regions on Mars are defined as environments able to host liquid water that meets certain temperature and water activity requirements that allow known terrestrial organisms to replicate, and therefore could be habitable. Such regions would be a concern for planetary protection policies owing to the potential for forward contamination (biological contamination from Earth). Pure liquid water is unstable on the Martian surface, but brines may be present. Experimental work has shown that brines persist beyond their predicted stability region, leading to metastable liquids. Here we show that (meta)stable brines can form and persist from the equator to high latitudes on the surface of Mars for a few percent of the year for up to six consecutive hours, a broader range than previously thought. However, only the lowest eutectic solutions can form, leading to brines with temperatures of less than 225 K. Our results indicate that (meta)stable brines on the Martian surface and shallow subsurface (a few centimeters deep) are not habitable because their water activities and temperatures fall outside the known tolerances for terrestrial life. Furthermore, (meta)stable brines do not meet the Special Regions requirements, reducing the risk for forward contamination and easing threats related to the exploration of the Martian surface.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out for glycerol–water–sodium chloride ternary solution due to its important role in cryopreservation engineering. The radial distribution functions for atom pairs potentially related to C–H ··· O and O–H ··· O hydrogen bonds were calculated. The radial distribution functions for the H (connected to C)–O atom pair do not exhibit peaks between 2 and 3 Å, whereas the radial distribution functions for the C–O atom pair exhibit distinct peaks between 3 and 4 Å. The reason for this is because most C–H ··· O geometries are bent and deviate from linearity. The ratios of acceptor to donor numbers for water and glycerol molecules decrease as the solute concentration increases. A characteristic concentration has been found that divides solutions with different mechanisms. Below the characteristic concentration, the melting temperature is linearly related to the ratio of acceptor to donor number for water molecules, whereas above the characteristic concentration, the melting temperature is linearly related to the ratio of acceptor to donor number for glycerol molecules. Further studies indicate that the relations are independent of hydrogen bonding criteria and temperature.
Microbial Activity and Habitability of an Antarctic Dry Valley Water Track

Abstract:Water tracks in the Antarctic Dry Valleys are dark linear features of increased soil moisture that flow downslope over the spring and summer, providing a source of moisture in a cold-arid desert. They are typically sourced from melting snow, ground ice, and deliquescence (Levy et al., 2011 ). This research presents the first in-depth study of the activity potential and diversity of microbial communities of Antarctic water tracks. We investigated whether these water track soils are more habitable to microbial communities by ascertaining the differences in diversity, total and culturable cell counts, and microbial respiratory activity in water track soils compared with the adjacent dry soils in Pearse Valley. Total cell counts ranged from 1.47 × 103 to 4.17 × 105 cells/g dry weight soil. Water track soils had higher total and culturable biomass, in addition to higher microbial activity at 5° and -5°C, compared with adjacent dry soils. Microbial respiration was positively correlated with soil moisture content, but total cell counts and plate counts were not. Surprisingly, microbial community composition did not differ between wet and dry soil communities, and was not related to soil moisture content. The microbial community composition instead appeared to differ spatially based on location and depth. Overall, the data suggest that cold water tracks are more habitable than the surrounding cold-arid soils. Our results suggest that recurring slope lineae, which are dark linear features that grow downslope on Mars over the spring and summer, where liquid water might be a recurring phenomenon, could be sites of astrobiological potential.
Preservation of Bacillus subtilis ' cellular liquid state at deep sub-zero temperatures in perchlorate brines

Abstract:Although a low temperature limit for life has not been established, it is thought that there exists a physical limit imposed by the onset of intracellular vitrification, typically occurring at ~−20 °C for unicellular organisms. Here, we show, through differential scanning calorimetry, that molar concentrations of magnesium perchlorate can depress the intracellular vitrification point of Bacillus subtilis cells to temperatures much lower than those previously reported. At 2.5 M Mg(ClO 4 ) 2 , the peak vitrification temperature was lowered to −83 °C. Our results show that inorganic eutectic salts can in principle maintain liquid water in cells at much lower temperatures than those previously claimed as a lower limit to life, raising the prospects of active biochemical processes in low temperature natural settings. Our results may have implications for the habitability of Mars, where perchlorate salts are pervasive and potentially other terrestrial and extraterrestrial, cryosphere environments.

Abstract:The intense debate about the presence of methane in the Martian atmosphere has stimulated the study of methanogens adapted to terrestrial habitats that mimic Martian environments. We examinate the environmental conditions, energy sources and ecology of terrestrial methanogens thriving in deep crystalline fractures, sub-sea hypersaline lakes and subglacial water bodies considered as analogs of a hypothetical habitable Martian subsurface. We combine this information with recent data on the distribution of buried water or ice and radiogenic elements on Mars and with models of the subsurface thermal regime of this planet to identify a 4.3-8.8 km-deep regolith habitat at the mid-latitude location of Acidalia Planitia, that might fit the requirements for hosting putative Martian methanogens analogous to the methanogenic families Methanosarcinaceae and Methanomicrobiaceae.

Abstract:The effects of KCl, NaCl, and LiCl on the growth of Debaryomyces hansenii, usually considered a halotolerant yeast, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae were compared. KCl and NaCl had similar effects on D. hansenii, indicating that NaCl created only osmotic stress, while LiCl had a specific inhibitory effect, although relatively weaker than in S. cerevisiae. In media with low K+, Na+ was able to substitute for K+, restoring the specific growth rate and the final biomass of the culture. The intracellular concentration of Na+ reached values up to 800 mM, suggesting that metabolism is not affected by rather high concentrations of salt. The ability of D. hansenii to extrude Na+ and Li+ was similar to that described for S. cerevisiae, suggesting that this mechanism is not responsible for the increased halotolerance. Also, the kinetic parameters of Rb+ uptake in D. hansenii (Vmax, 4.2 nmol mg [dry weight]-1 min-1; K(m), 7.4 mM) indicate that the transport system was not more efficient than in S. cerevisiae. Sodium (50 mM) activated the transport of Rb+ by increasing the affinity for the substrate in D. hansenii, while the effect was opposite in S. cerevisiae. Lithium inhibited Rb+ uptake in D. hansenii. We propose that the metabolism of D. hansenii is less sensitive to intracellular Na+ than is that of S. cerevisiae, that Na+ substitutes for K+ when K+ is scarce, and that the transport of K+ is favored by the presence of Na+. In low K+ environments, D. hansenii behaved as a halophilic yeast.

Ammonia or methanol would enable subsurface liquid water in the Martian South Pole

Abstract:The notion of liquid water beneath the ice layer at the south polar layered deposits of Mars is an interesting possibility given the implications for astrobiology, and possible human habitation. A body of liquid water located at a depth of 1.5 km has been inferred from radar data in the South Polar Cap. However, the high temperatures that would facilitate the existence of liquid water or brine at that depth are not consistent with estimations of heat flow that are based on the lithosphere's flexure. Attempts to reconcile both issues have been inconclusive or otherwise unsuccessful. Here, we analyse the possible role of subsurface ammonia and methanol in maintaining water in a liquid state at subsurface temperatures that are compatible with the lithosphere strength. Our results indicate that the presence of these compounds at the base of the south polar layered deposits can reconcile the existence of liquid water with previous estimations of surface heat flow.

Abstract:During the Noachian, Mars' crust may have provided a favorable environment for microbial life. The porous brine-saturated regolith would have created a physical space sheltered from UV and cosmic radiations and provided a solvent, while the below-ground temperature and diffusion of a dense reduced atmosphere may have supported simple microbial organisms that consume H2 and CO2 as energy and carbon sources and produce methane as a waste. On Earth, hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis was among the earliest metabolisms but its viability on early Mars has never been quantitatively evaluated. Here we present a probabilistic assessment of Mars' Noachian habitability to H2-based methanogens, and quantify their biological feedback on Mars' atmosphere and climate. We find that subsurface habitability was very likely, and limited mainly by the extent of surface ice coverage. Biomass productivity could have been as high as in early Earth's ocean. However, the predicted atmospheric composition shift caused by methanogenesis would have triggered a global cooling event, ending potential early warm conditions, compromising surface habitability and forcing the biosphere deep into the Martian crust. Spatial projections of our predictions point to lowland sites at low-to-medium latitudes as good candidates to uncover traces of this early life at or near the surface.

Abstract:Microscopic liquid brines, especially calcium-perchlorate could emerge by deliquescence on Mars during night time hours. Using climate model computations and orbital humidity observations, the ideal periods and their annual plus daily characteristics at various past, current and future landing sites were compared. Such results provide context for future analysis and targeting the related observations by the next missions for Mars. Based on the analysis, at most (but not all) past missions' landing sites, microscopic brine could emerge during night time for different durations. Analysing the conditions at ExoMars rover's primary landing site at Oxia Planum, the best annual period was found to be between $L_s$ 115 - 225, and in $Local\hspace{0.1cm} Time$ 2 - 5, after midnight. In an ideal case, 4 hours of continuous liquid phase can emerge there. Local conditions might cause values to differ from those estimated by the model. Thermal inertia could especially make such differences (low TI values favour fast cooling and $\textrm{H}_2\textrm{O}$ cold trapping at loose surfaces) and the concentration of calcium-perchlorate salt in the regolith also influences the process (it might occur preferentially at long-term exposed surfaces without recent loose dust coverage). These factors should be taken into account while targeting future liquid water observations on Mars.

Abstract:We demonstrate two types of all-optical wavelength conversion devices using nonlinear optical effects in silicon photonic wire waveguides. One is based on cross-absorption modulation using two-photon absorption (TPA). The other is based on four-wave mixing and gives an internal conversion efficiency of about -11 dB.
