Abstract:With the dramatic increase in nanotechnologies, it has become increasingly likely that food crops will be exposed to excess engineered nanoparticles (NPs). In this study, cucumber plants were grown to full maturity in soil amended with either CeO2 or ZnO NPs at concentrations of 0, 400, and 800 mg/kg. Chlorophyll and gas exchange were monitored, and physiological markers were recorded. Results showed that, at the concentrations tested, neither CeO2 nor ZnO NPs impacted cucumber plant growth, gas exchange, and chlorophyll content. However, at 800 mg/kg treatment, CeO2 NPs reduced the yield by 31.6% compared to the control (p ≤ 0.07). ICP-MS results showed that the high concentration treatments resulted in the bioaccumulation of Ce and Zn in the fruit (1.27 mg of Ce and 110 mg Zn per kg dry weight). μ-XRF images exhibited Ce in the leaf vein vasculature, suggesting that Ce moves between tissues with water flow during transpiration. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first holistic study focusing on the impacts of CeO2 and ZnO NPs in the life cycle of cucumber plants.

Abstract:With the widespread applications of manufactured nanoparticles (NPs), there are increasing concerns about their potential adverse effects on the environment and living systems. Many studies demonstrated that NPs could significantly affect the growth and development of crop plants. However, knowledge regarding the impacts of NPs on crop quality is rather limited. In this study, the effects of CeO2 NPs (25, 75, and 225 mg Ce/kg) and CeCl3 (25 mg Ce/kg) on the nutritional components of soil-cultivated corn and soybean plants were evaluated. Both treatments tended to decrease the dry weight of grain per plant, while only 225 mg/kg CeO2 NPs on soybean and CeCl3 on corn showed statistical significance compared with the respective control. CeO2 NPs at 225 mg/kg significantly decreased the content of starch in the corn kernels by 18.2% but increased total phenols in soybean seeds by 18.4%. Neither CeO2 NPs nor CeCl3 significantly affected the contents of minerals in corn kernels except for Zn. However, in the case of soybean, the two treatments tended to decrease the contents of P, Zn, Mn, and Mo but increase the content of S. Overall, the results suggest that CeO2 NPs and Ce3+ ions showed similar but not identical effects on corn and soybean plants. CeO2 NPs affect the nutritional quality of crop plants in a species-dependent manner.

Abstract:Information about changes in physiological and agronomic parameters through the life cycle of plants exposed to engineered nanoparticles (NPs) is scarce. In this study, corn (Zea mays) plants were cultivated to full maturity in soil amended with either nCeO2 or nZnO at 0, 400, and 800 mg/kg. Gas exchange was monitored every 10 days, and at harvest, bioaccumulation of Ce and Zn in tissues was determined by ICP-OES/MS. The effects of NPs exposure on nutrient concentration and distribution in ears were also evaluated by ICP-OES and μ-XRF. Results showed that nCeO2 at both concentrations did not impact gas exchange in leaves at any growth stage, while nZnO at 800 mg/kg reduced net photosynthesis by 12%, stomatal conductance by 15%, and relative chlorophyll content by 10% at day 20. Yield was reduced by 38% with nCeO2 and by 49% with nZnO. Importantly, μ-XRF mapping showed that nCeO2 changed the allocation of calcium in kernels, compared to controls. In nCeO2 treated plants, Cu, K, Mn, and Zn were mainly localized at the insertion of kernels into cobs, but Ca and Fe were distributed in other parts of the kernels. Results showed that nCeO2 and nZnO reduced corn yield and altered quality of corn.

Abstract:The impact of CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on plant physiology and soil microcosm and the underlying mechanism remains unclear to date. This study investigates the effect of CeO2 NPs on plant growth and soil microbial communities in both the rhizosphere of cucumber seedlings and the surrounding bulk soil, with CeCl3 as a comparison to identify the contribution of the particulate and ionic form to the phytotoxicity of CeO2 NPs. The results show that Ce was significantly accumulated in the cucumber tissue after CeO2 NPs exposure. In the roots, 5.3% of the accumulated Ce has transformed to Ce3+. This transformation might take place prior to uptake by the roots since 2.5% of CeO2 NPs was found transformed in the rhizosphere soil. However, the transformation of CeO2 NPs in the bulk soil was negligible, indicating the critical role of rhizosphere chemistry in the transformation. CeO2 NPs treatment induced oxidative stress in the roots, but the biomass of the roots was significantly increased, although the Vitamin C (Vc) content and soluble sugar content were decreased and mineral nutrient contents were altered. The soil enzymatic activity and the microbial community in both rhizosphere and bulk soil samples were altered, with rhizosphere soil showing more prominent changes. CeCl3 treatment induced similar effects although less than CeO2 NPs, suggesting that Ce3+ released from CeO2 NPs contributed to the CeO2 NPs induced impacts on soil health and plant physiology.

Abstract:The toxicological effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in plants are still largely unknown. In the present study, green pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants were treated with 0, 125, 250, and 500 mg kg(-1) of either ZnO NPs or bulk ZnO in organic matter enriched soil. Corresponding toxicological effects were measured on the basis of plant growth, chlorophyll production, Zn bioaccumulation, H2O2 generation, stress enzyme activity, and lipid peroxidation using different cellular, molecular, and biochemical approaches. Compared to control, all ZnO NP concentrations significantly increased (p ≤ 0.05) root elongation but no effects were observed in the stem. Whereas all bulk ZnO treatments significantly increased both root and stem length. After 25 days, chlorophyll in leaves decreased, compared to control, by ~61%, 67%, and 77% in plants treated with 125, 250, and 500 mg kg(-1) ZnO NPs, respectively. Similar results were found in bulk ZnO treated plants. At all ZnO NP concentrations CAT was significantly reduced in leaves (p ≤ 0.05), while APOX was reduced in both roots and leaves. In the case of bulk ZnO, APOX activity was down-regulated in the root and leaf and CAT was unaffected. At 500 mg kg(-1) treatment, the H2O2 in leaves increased by 61% with a twofold lipid peroxidation, which would be a predictive biomarker of nanotoxicity. This study could be pioneering in evaluating the phytotoxicity of ZnO NPs to green peas and can serve as a good indicator for measuring the effects on ZnO NPs in plants grown in organic matter enriched soil.

Abstract:Introduction: The increasing use of cerium nanoparticles (CeO2-NPs) has made their influx in agroecosystems imminent through air and soil deposition or untreated wastewater irrigation. Another major pollutant associated with anthropogenic activities is Cd, which has adverse effects on plants, animals, and humans. The major source of the influx of Cd and Ce metals in the human food chain is contaminated food, making it an alarming issue; thus, there is a need to understand the factors that can reduce the potential damage of these heavy metals. Methods: The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the effect of CeO2-10-nm-NPs and Cd (alone and in combination) on Zea mays growth. A pot experiment (in sand) was conducted to check the effect of 0, 200, 400, 600, 1,000, and 2,000 mg of CeO2-10 nm-NPs/kg-1 dry sand alone and in combination with 0 and 0.5 mg Cd/kg-1 dry sand on maize seedlings grown in a partially controlled greenhouse environment, making a total of 12 treatments applied in four replicates under a factorial design. Maize seedling biomass, shoot and root growth, nutrient content, and root anatomy were measured. Results and discussion: The NPs were toxic to plant biomass (shoot and root dry weight), and growth at 2,000 ppm was the most toxic in Cd-0 sets. For Cd-0.5 sets, NPs applied at 1,000 ppm somewhat reverted Cd toxicity compared with the contaminated control (CC). Additionally, CeO2-NPs affected Cd translocation, and variable Ce uptake was observed in the presence of Cd compared with non-Cd applied sets. Furthermore, CeO2-NPs partially controlled the elemental content of roots and shoots (micronutrients such as B, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mo, and Fe and the elements Co and Si) and affected root anatomy.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The transformation of nanoparticles (NPs) internalized in plant tissues is the human digestive system that can provide a better understanding of the impact of NPs on the human system. The presented methodology was developed to study the bioaccessibility of cerium oxide (CeO2) and copper oxide (CuO) NPs from radish after thein vitrosimulation of gastrointestinal digestion using single-particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS). RESULTS Radish plants were cultivated hydroponically in a growth medium containing: (i) CeO(2)NPs and (ii) CuO NPs. Both cerium (Ce) and copper (Cu) were found in all organs of the radish plants after analysis by standalone ICP-MS. This confirms the bioaccumulation of CeO(2)and CuO NPs and the translocation of their Ce and Cu to the aerial parts of the plant. Less Ce (4.095 mu g g(-1)) has been detected in leaves than in roots (1.156 mg g(-1)) while Cu content in leaves was 5.245 mu g g(-1)and in roots was 10.41 mu g g(-1). Analysis of the digestive extracts obtained after thein vitrosimulation of gastro (pepsin) and gastrointestinal (pancreatin) digestion showed that Ce has easy access to human system at least by 73%. CONCLUSION The size of CeO(2)NPs in digestive extracts showed no significant changes. However, the results obtained for CuO NPs digestion were variable and suggested that CuO NPs dissolved during the digestion process. Explaining Radical Technology-Based Innovations in Organizations

Abstract:We propose a causal model to explain radical IS innovation. Based on the presence of a combination of predictors the model explains three types of radical IS innovation: (1) radical base innovations, i.e. breakthroughs in computing architectures; (2) radical process innovation; and (3) radical service innovation. We conduct a cross-sector field study to validate the model and identify which factors predict each of the three types of innovation. We also examine which factors increase the likelihood of a firm becoming a disruptive innovator, which engages simultaneously in all three types of innovation. Consistent with Swanson (1994) and Grover et al (1997) we confirm that each radical IS innovation type is caused by a different combination of factors. Overall, radical IS innovation is determined primarily by an organization’s knowledge depth, knowledge diversity, and ability to sense technological changes in its environment. Our findings support the claim that IS innovation research needs to differentiate its explanations by IS innovation type.

Abstract:The rapid development of nanotechnology will inevitably release nanoparticles (NPs) into the environment with unidentified consequences. In addition, the potential toxicity of CeO2 NPs to plants and the possible transfer into the food chain are still unknown. Corn plants (Zea mays) were germinated and grown in soil treated with CeO2 NPs at 400 or 800 mg/kg. Stress-related parameters, such as H2O2, catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), lipid peroxidation, cell death, and leaf gas exchange were analyzed at 10, 15, and 20 days post-germination. Confocal laser scanning microscopy was used to image H2O2 distribution in corn leaves. Results showed that the CeO2 NP treatments increased accumulation of H2O2, up to day 15, in phloem, xylem, bundle sheath cells and epidermal cells of shoots. The CAT and APX activities were also increased in the corn shoot, concomitant with the H2O2 levels. Both 400 and 800 mg/kg CeO2 NPs triggered the up-regulation of the HSP70 in roots, Indicating a systemic stress response. None of the CeO2 NPs increased the level of thiobarbituric acid reacting substances, Indicating that no lipid peroxidation occurred. CeO2 NPs, at both concentrations, did not induce Ion leakage in either roots or shoots, suggesting that membrane integrity was not compromised. Leaf net photosynthetic rate, transpiration, and stomatal conductance were not affected by CeO2 NPs. Our results suggest that the CAT, APX, and HSP70 might help the plants defend against CeO2 NP-induced oxidative injury and survive NP exposure.
Bioavailability and Translocation of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in the Soil-Rice Plant System.

Abstract:To determine the bioavailability and translocation of metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) in the soil-rice plant system, we examined the accumulation and micro-distribution of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), CuO NPs and CeO2 NPs (50, 100 and 500 mg/kg) in the paddy soil and rice plants under flooded condition for 30 days using single-step chemical extraction and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique combined with micro Xray fluorescence spectroscopy (mu-XRF). The results show that various MONPs changed the soil properties, especially the redox potential was enhanced to -165.33 to -75.33 mV compared to the control. The extraction efficiency of Zn, Cu and Ce in the paddy soil from high to low was EDTA, DTPA CaCl2 and DGT. Moreover, exposure to 500 mg/kg CuO NPs and CeO2 NPs induced the primary accumulation of Cu and Ce elements in rice roots as high as 235.48 mg Cu/kg and 164.84 mg Ce/kg, respectively, while the Zn concentration in shoots was up to 313.18 mg/kg under highest ZnO NPs with a 1.5 of translocation factor. The effect of MONPs on the plant growth was mainly related to the chemical species and solubility of MONPs. Micro-XRF analysis shows that Zn was mostly located in the root cortex while Cu was primarily accumulated in the root exodermis and few Ce distributed in the root. Pearson correlation coefficients indicate that only DTPA-extracted metals in soil were significantly and well correlated to the Zn, Cu and Ce accumulation in rice seedlings exposed to MONPs. Bioavailability of cerium oxide nanoparticles to Raphanus sativus L. in two soils

Abstract:Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NP) are a common component of many commercial products. Due to the general concerns over the potential toxicity of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), the phytotoxicity and in planta accumulation of CeO2 NPs have been broadly investigated. However, most previous studies were conducted in hydroponic systems and with grain crops. For a few studies performed with soil grown plants, the impact of soil properties on the fate and transport of CeO2 NPs was generally ignored even though numerous previous studies indicate that soil properties play a critical role in the fate and transport of environmental pollutants. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the soil fractionation and bioavailability of CeO2 NPs to Raphanus sativus L (radish) in two soil types. Our results showed that the silty loam contained slightly higher exchangeable fraction (F1) of cerium element than did loamy sand soil, but significantly lower reducible (F2) and oxidizable (F3) fractions as CeO2 NPs concentration increased. CeO2 NPs associated with silicate minerals or the residue fraction (F4) dominated in both soils. The cerium concentration in radish storage root showed linear correlation with the sum of the first three fractions (r2 = 0.98 and 0.78 for loamy sand and silty loam respectively). However, the cerium content in radish shoots only exhibited strong correlations with F1 (r2 = 0.97 and 0.89 for loamy sand and silty loam respectively). Overall, the results demonstrated that soil properties are important factors governing the distribution of CeO2 NPs in soil and subsequent bioavailability to plants.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine nutrient elements in soybean (Glycine max) plants cultivated in farm soil amended with nCeO2 at 0-1000 mg kg(-1) and nZnO at 0-500 mg kg(-1). Digested samples were analyzed by ICP-OES/MS. Compared to control, pods from nCeO2 at 1000 mg kg(-1) had significantly less Ca but more P and Cu, while pods from 100 mg kg(-1)nZnO had more Zn, Mn, and Cu. Plants treated with nZnO showed significant correlations among Zn, P, and S in pods with Zn in roots. Correlations among pod Zn/root Zn was r = 0.808 (p ≤ 0.01) and pod P/root P was r = 0.541 (p ≤ 0.05). The correlation among pod S/root S was r = -0.65 (p ≤ 0.01). While nCeO2 treatments exhibited significant correlations between pod Ca/root Ca (r = 0.645, p ≤ 0.05). The data suggest that nCeO2 and nZnO alter the nutritional value of soybean, which could affect the health of plants, humans, and animals.

Abstract:Previous studies have reported the uptake of cerium oxide nanopartides (nCeO(2)) by plants, but their physiological impacts are not Ye t well understood. This research was aimed to study the impact of nCeO(2) on the oxidative stress and antioxidant defense system in germinating rice seeds. The seeds were germinated for 10 days in nCeO(2) suspension at 62.5 125 250 d 500 mg L-1 concentrations. The Ce uptake, growth performance, stress le anvels, membrane damage, and antioxidant responses in seedlings were analyzed. Ce in tissues increased with increased nCeO(2) concentrations, but the seedlings showed no visible signs of toxicity. Biochemical assays and in vivo imaging of H2O2 revealed that, relative to the control, the 62.5 and 125 mg nCeO(2) L-1 treatments significantly reduced the H2O2 generation in both shoots and roots. Enhanced electrolyte leakage and lipid peroiddation were found in the shoots of seedlings grown at 500 mg nCeO(2) L-1 Altered enzyme activities and levels of ascnrbate and free thiols resulting in enhanced membrane damage and photosynthetic stress in the shoots were observed at 500 mg nCeO(2) L-1. These findings demonstrate a nCeO(2) concentration-dependent modification of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense system in rice seedlings

Abstract:There is lack of information about the effects of nanoparticles (NPs) on cucumber fruit quality. This study aimed to determine possible impacts on carbohydrates, proteins, mineral nutrients, and antioxidants in the fruit of cucumber plants grown in soil treated with CeO2 and ZnO NPs at 400 and 800 mg/kg. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to detect changes in functional groups, while ICP-OES and μ-XRF were used to quantify and map the distribution of nutrient elements, respectively. Results showed that none of the ZnO NP concentrations affected sugars; however at 400 mg/kg, CeO2 and ZnO NPs increased starch content. Conversely, CeO2 NPs did not affect starch content but impacted nonreducing sugar content (sucrose). FTIR data showed changes in the fingerprint regions of 1106, 1083, 1153, and 1181, indicating that both NPs altered the carbohydrate pattern. ZnO NPs did not impact protein fractionation; however, CeO2 NPs at 400 mg/kg increased globulin and decreased glutelin. Both CeO2 and ZnO NPs had no impact on flavonoid content, although CeO2 NPs at 800 mg/kg significantly reduced phenolic content. ICP-OES results showed that none of the treatments reduced macronutrients in fruit. In case of micronutrients, all treatments reduced Mo concentration, and at 400 mg/kg, ZnO NPs reduced Cu accumulation. μ-XRF revealed that Cu, Mn, and Zn were mainly accumulated in cucumber seeds. Effects of cerium oxide nanoparticles and cadmium on corn (Zea mays L.) seedlings physiology and root anatomy

Abstract:Heavy metals and engineering nanoparticles (ENPs) are chemical compounds that, in the recent years, have attracted environmental concerns. Particularly, cadmium (Cd) and cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) have attracted researchers' interest because of their chemical and biophysical properties. Most of the previous studies were conducted on C3 plants, which produce three‑carbon compound via the Calvin cycle. This research observed and measured the effects of CeO2NPs and Cd on a C4 species, where photosynthesis makes an intermediate four‑carbon compound that later splits into a three‑carbon compound for the Calvin cycle. Twenty sweet corn seedlings were grown in plastic pots filled with sand under greenhouse conditions and then assigned to a completely randomized experimental design for one month. Four treatments were established: (a.) 0.5 mg kg−1 Cd2+ dry sand, (b.) 500 mg kg−1 CeO2NPs dry sand, (c.) 0.5 mg kg−1 Cd + 500 mg kg−1 CeO2NPs and (d.) 0 mg kg−1 Cd and CeO2NPs as the control. At termination, plant roots and shoots were separated and the concentrations of Cd and Ce in these tissues were determined. Significant differences were found in corn root and leaf biomass, where CeO2NPs promoted the corn growth and development, while Cd hindered the leaf dry weight. No changes were found in chlorophyll contents, but differences were reported in stomatal conductance with higher values registered when CeO2NPs and Cd were applied. Finally, root anatomical changes were analyzed and a clear set of apoplastic barriers closer to the root tip were detected under the exposure of CeO2NPs and Cd. In conclusion CeO2NPs and Cd, alone or in combination, significantly affected the physiology and the root anatomy of corn plants.

Abstract:Currently, most of the nanotoxicity studies in plants involve exposure to the nanoparticles (NPs) through the roots. However, plants interact with atmospheric NPs through the leaves, and our knowledge on their response to this contact is limited. In this study, hydroponically grown cucumber (Cucumis sativus) plants were aerially treated either with nano ceria powder (nCeO2) at 0.98 and 2.94 g/m(3) or suspensions at 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320 mg/L. Fifteen days after treatment, plants were analyzed for Ce uptake by using ICP-OES and TEM. In addition, the activity of three stress enzymes was measured. The ICP-OES results showed Ce in all tissues of the CeO2 NP treated plants, suggesting uptake through the leaves and translocation to the other plant parts. The TEM results showed the presence of Ce in roots, which corroborates the ICP-OES results. The biochemical assays showed that catalase activity increased in roots and ascorbate peroxidase activity decreased in leaves. Our findings show that atmospheric NPs can be taken up and distributed within plant tissues, which could represent a threat for environmental and human health.
Effect of CeO2, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles on the growth and quality of model medicinal plant Salvia miltiorrhiza by acting on soil microenvironment

Abstract:In this study, a six-month pot experiment was conducted to explore the effects of nanoparticles (NPs), including CeO2, TiO2 and SiO2 NPs at 200 and 800 mg/kg, on the growth and quality of model medicinal plant Salvia miltiorrhiza. A control group was implemented without the application of NPs. Results showed that NPs had no significant effect on root biomass. Treatment with 200 mg/kg of SiO2 NPs significantly increased the total tanshinone content by 44.07 %, while 200 mg/kg of CeO2 NPs were conducive to a 22.34 % increase in salvianolic acid B content. Exposure to CeO2 NPs induced a substantial rise in the MDA content in leaves (176.25 % and 329.15 % under low and high concentration exposure, respectively), resulting in pronounced oxidative stress. However, TiO2 and SiO2 NPs did not evoke a robust response from the antioxidant system. Besides, high doses of CeO2 NP-amended soil led to reduced nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents. Furthermore, the NP amendment disturbed the carbon and nitrogen metabolism in the plant rhizosphere and reshaped the rhizosphere microbial community structure. The application of CeO2 and TiO2 NPs promoted the accumulation of metabolites with antioxidant functions, such as D-altrose, trehalose, arachidonic acid and ergosterol. NPs displayed a notable suppressive effect on pathogenic fungi (Fusarium and Gibberella) in the rhizosphere, while enriching beneficial taxa with disease resistance, heavy metal antagonism and plant growth promotion ability (Lysobacter, Streptomycetaceae, Bacillaceae and Hannaella). Correlation analysis indicated the involvement of rhizosphere microorganisms in plant adaptation to NP amendments. NPs regulate plant growth and quality by altering soil properties, rhizosphere microbial community structure, and influencing plant and rhizosphere microbe metabolism. These findings were beneficial to deepening the understanding of the mechanism by which NPs affect medicinal plants.

Abstract:The ongoing global climate change raises concerns over the decreasing moisture content in agricultural soils. Our research investigated the physiological impact of two types of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2NPs) on soybean at different moisture content levels. One CeO2NP was positively charged on the surface and the other negatively charged due to the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coating. The results suggest that the effect of CeO2NPs on plant photosynthesis and water use efficiency (WUE) was dependent upon the soil moisture content. Both types of CeO2NPs exhibited consistently positive impacts on plant photosynthesis at the moisture content above 70% of field capacity (θfc). Similar positive impact of CeO2NPs was not observed at 55% θfc, suggesting that the physiological impact of CeO2NPs was dependent upon the soil moisture content. The results also revealed that VCmax (maximum carboxylation rate) was affected by CeO2NPs, indicating that CeO2NPs affected the Rubisco activity which governs carbon assimilation in photosynthesis. In conclusion, CeO2NPs demonstrated significant impacts on the photosynthesis and WUE of soybeans and such impacts were affected by the soil moisture content.Graphical abstractSoil moisture content affects plant cerium oxide nanoparticle interactions

Abstract:The release of toxic ions from metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) may play an important role in biological effects of NPs. In this life cycle study, physiological and biochemical responses of soil-grown corn (Zea mays) plants exposed to ceria NPs and its ionic counterparts Ce3+ ions at 0, 25, 75 and 225 mg Ce/kg were investigated. Both treatments tended to reduce the fresh weight and height of the plants at 28 days after sowing (DAS), and delay silk appearance and finally decrease fruit weight at harvest. Uptake and distribution of some miner nutrients, Ca, P, Fe, B, Zn and Mn in the plants were disturbed. None of the treatments significantly affected activities of antioxidant enzymes and MDA contents in the roots and leaves at 28 DAS. At 90 DAS, ceria NPs and Ce3+ ions disturbed the homeostasis of antioxidative systems in the plants, Ce3+ ion at all concentrations provoked significant oxidative damage in the roots and significantly increased MDA levels as compare to the control. The results indicate that the effects of ceria NPs and Ce3+ ions on corn plants varied with different growth stages and ceria NPs had similar but less severe impacts than Ce3+ ions. Speciation analysis revealed there was mutual transformation between CeO2 and Ce3+ in the soil-plant system. It is speculated that Ce3+ ions play a key role in toxicity. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of a life cycle study on comparative toxicity of CeO2 NPs and Ce3+ ions on corn plants.

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) have recently begun to be used extensively in many areas of our lives. It is stated that the resulting NPs pollution will affect even the most remote ecosystems on the Earth. Therefore, determining the effects of NPs on diverse ecosystems is a research topic of interest. From this perspective, current researches on NPs affecting forest ecosystems and forest trees are very scarce. The aim of this investigation was to reveal the inhibitory and toxic properties of CuO and ZnO-NPs on oriental beech seed germination parameters and identify the toxic threshold values of CuO and ZnO-NPs. Therefore, the oriental beech ( Fagus orientalis L.) seeds obtained from ten populations (P1 to P10) were treated with CuO and ZnO-NPs as single compounds at concentrations of 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mg/L and germination rate (GR), germination percentage (GP), root collar diameter (RCD), plumula length (PL), radicle thickness (RT) and radicle diameter (RD) were determined for 35 days. The water containing CuO-ZnO NPs as a single compound at 1000 mg/L negatively affected all growth in general. The significant decrease in our study occurred at P9. The CuO-ZnO NPs were reduced in GP, RCD, PL, RT, and RD as 3.5–4.2%; 11.2–0.1%; 9.1–36.4%; 23.07–38.46%; and 39.29–17.86%, while GR enhanced as 21.46–20.09%. It was found that water with a low concentration of NP (200 mg/L) is suitable for irrigation of seeds grown in soil media and does not have a significant toxic effect on the growth and uptake of metal ions. The findings and limitations of the present research allow us to assess the feasibility of reusing NP-contaminated water in agriculture. Nevertheless, further research is needed to understand the toxic effects of NP mixtures on growth and absorption mechanisms.
