Abstract:The use of fungicides in the postharvest treatment of mangoes has been widespread due to the incidence of pathogens, but awareness of the health risks arising from their use has increased, driving the search for more sustainable treatments. This study aimed to evaluate the activity of antifungal treatment of seven essential oils (EO) against four fungi that cause postharvest diseases in mangoes and define the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and chemical composition, analyzed by gas chromatography (GC-MS). The results showed that the EOs of oregano, rosemary pepper, cinnamon bark, and clove inhibited 100% of the mycelial growth of the studied pathogens, with MIC ranging from 250 to 2000 μL.L −1 . The main compound found in oregano was carvacrol (69.1%); in rosemary and pepper oil, it was thymol (77.2%); cinnamaldehyde (85.1%) was the main constituent of cinnamon bark, and the eugenol (84.84%) in cloves. When evaluating the antifungal activity of these compounds, thymol and carvacrol showed greater inhibitory activity against fungi. Therefore, this study showed the great potential of oregano, clove, rosemary pepper, and cinnamon bark essential oil as alternative treatments to synthetic fungicides in controlling postharvest diseases in mangoes.

Abstract:Anthracnose disease caused by Colletotrichum spp. makes heavy losses for post-harvest mangoes of Cat Hoa Loc variety during storage, packaging, and transportation. The synthetic fungicides are commonly used to control the disease, but they are not safe for consumers’ health and environment. This study was aimed to investigate the use of essential oils (EOs) as the safe alternative control. Pathogen was isolated from the infected Cat Hoa Loc mangoes and identified by morphology and DNA sequencing of the ITS region. Six EOs (cinnamon, basil, lemongrass, peppermint, coriander, and orange) were chemically analyzed by GC–MS. The antifungal activity of EOs was studied in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that the isolated pathogen was Colletotrichum acutatum. Cinnamon, basil, and lemongrass EOs effectively inhibited the growth of C. acutatum in descending order of cinnamon, basil, and lemongrass. However, they (except basil oil) severely damaged fruit peels. The antifungal activity was closely related to the main compounds of EOs. Basil EOs effectively controlled anthracnose development on Cat Hoa Loc mangoes artificially infected with C. acutatum, and its effectiveness was comparable to that of fungicide treatment. Consequently, basil EOs can be used as a biocide to control anthracnose on post-harvest Cat Hoa Loc mangoes.

Abstract:Essential oil-based products with broad plant disease control claims are commercially available and may be a practical alternative to copper fungicides for crop protection in organic mango orchards. We evaluated the disease control efficacy and crop safety of thyme oil, savory oil, and tree tea oil through replicated in vitro, in vivo (detached leaf and potted trees), and field assays. Three Colletotrichum species associated with mango anthracnose were tested in vitro, whereas only C. siamense was used for in vivo assays. Within the range of concentrations tested in vitro (62.5 to 2,000 µl a.i./liter), thyme and savory oil displayed fungicidal activity, whereas no fungistatic or fungicidal activity was observed with tea tree oil. In the in vivo assays, none of the treatments based on a preventive application rate of thyme (1,150 µl a.i./liter), savory (2,000 µl a.i./liter), or tea tree oil (342 µl a.i./liter) were effective in preventing the development of anthracnose on wounded and artificially inoculated leaves. Although field applications of thyme or tea tree oil did not result in phytotoxicity or negative impacts on fruit yield, they were ineffective in reducing the incidence and severity of naturally occurring anthracnose. Applications of copper hydroxide approved for organic agriculture were effective in controlling anthracnose in the field, and no added benefits were found by premixing this compound with thyme oil. Results indicate that essential oil products based on thyme or tea tree oil are inefficient at controlling anthracnose in mangoes.

Abstract:Mango anthracnose is one of the most important mango diseases in Côte d'Ivoire. The chemical approach to control this disease is today decried by consumers, because of the pesticide residues left in the fruit. The search for alternative control solutions, that respect the environment and are less polluting is becoming a necessity. Thus, the use of essential oils in the protection of mangoes against fruit pests before and especially after harvest is a promising solution. The present study aimed to reveal the inhibitory efficacy of essential oil of Melaleuca quinquenervia L. and Cymbopogon citratus (D.C) Stapf against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz & Sacc causal agent of mango anthracnose, stored at room temperature. Five doses (100; 200; 500; 1,000 and 2,000 ppm) of each product were tested in vitro on mycelial growth and spore germination of C. gloeosporioides. In vivo, 700 and 1,400 ppm of C. citratus L. and 1,200 and 12,000 ppm of M. quinquenervia L. were tested against anthracnose in artificially inoculated mangoes. The impact of the different doses of these species on the physico-chemical parameters of the treated fruits was evaluated on day 11. Results showed that mycelial growth and spore germination were totally inhibited by C. citratus essential oil at 1,000 and 2,000 ppm throughout the experiment. In Vivo, the 1,200 ppm dose of M. quinquenervia strongly reduced the occurrence and progression of anthracnose in treated fruits compared to the control with an efficiency rate of 77.76 ± 8.73 and 86.63 ± 5.21%, respectivement. The essences did not significantly influence the physico-chemical parameters of the fruits. The doses 1,200 ppm of M. quinquenervia and 1,400 ppm of C. citratus can be recommended in a post-harvest biological control strategy against mangoes anthracnose.
Postharvest treatment of mango: Potential use of essential oil with thymol to control anthracnose development

Abstract:Introduction – Anthracnose, a fungal disease caused by the Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species is the main postharvest problem concerning mango (Mangifera indica) production on La Reunion Island. Traditional postharvest treatments involve chemical compounds that do not comply with the expectations of consumers or importing countries. Chemical treatments are generally used against C. gloeosporioides. Our goal was to develop alternative postharvest treatments using the fungitoxic properties of two essential oils (EO). Materials and methods – Two commercial essential oils, X2 and X5, were used at various concentrations and compared to a no-oil control. A first batch of treatments were tested in vitro for studying mycelial growth and the inhibition of conidial germination. The second experiment measured the effects of the treatments on the fruit quality of inoculated mangoes var. Tommy Atkins with a solution of C. gloeosporioides spores. Results and discussion – In vitro, X5 mainly composed of thymol was very fungitoxic against C. gloeosporioides. The concentrations of phenolic compounds and resorcinol in the fruits were increased after the X5 treatments, expressing some positive effects of essential oil treatments on fruit resistance mechanisms. The quality of treated fruits verified the requirements to meet consumers' expectations. Conclusion – Thymol-based EO exhibited a strong fungitoxic in vitro activity but it had no detectable effect when applied by volatilization on mango necrosis. Alternatives ways of treatments should be tested.

Effect of Essential Oils Treatment on Anthracnose ( Colletotrichum gloeosporioides ) Disease Development , Quality and Shelf Life of Mango Fruits ( Mangifera indica L )

Abstract:Anthracnose (Colletotrichum gloeosporioides) is one of the major constraints to production and productivity of worldwide including Ethiopia. Toxicity to non-target organisms, pathogens resistance development, environmental contamination, are among the limitations for using the synthetic chemicals as control options. Although essential oils treatments are reported to be safe and effective in controlling of fungal development this was not yet evaluated. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of ginger and cinnamon essential oils treatments on mango anthracnose disease management, the quality and shelf life extension of mango fruit. Completely randomised design (CRD) with three replications was laid in this experiment. The study revealed that the tested essential oils concentrations did not affect some quality parameters of mango fruits on the 5 day but showed significant influence after further days of storage. Disease th incidence and severity were effectively controlled with 0.45% ginger essential oils and cinnamon essential oil at 0.075%. The maximum disease incidence (100%) and severity (65.56%) were recorded in the control treatment on the 25 days of storage. While the minimum incidence (38.1%) and severity (26.67%) were recorded in ginger th (0.45%) and cinnamon (0.075%) treated fruit 25 days after treatment respectively. Disease incidence and severity directly affected some quality parameters like weight loss, Total Soluble solids, Titratable Acidity, pH, Firmness, Total soluble solids to Titratable Acidity ratio during studies. Hence the study clearly depicted that essential oils treatment has very important perspective for mango anthracnose disease management and quality and shelf life extension of mango fruit in real practices.

Abstract:A huge amount of orange peel waste is annually discharged into the environment. Processing of this waste for the control of post-harvest fruit diseases can reduce environmental pollution. Essential oils (EOs) from fruit peels of Citrus reticulata × sinensis (Sanh cultivar) and Citrus sinensis (Xoan, Mat and Navel cultivar) were investigated for their ability to control anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Colletotrichum scovillei on mangoes. EOs were extracted by hydro-distillation and analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID. The antifungal activity of the EOs was determined by in vitro and in vivo assays. The Mat cultivar had the highest extraction yield of 3% FW, followed by Xoan (2.9%), Sanh (2.2%), and Navel (1%). The chemical composition of the EOs was similar, with limonene as the main compound (around 96%). The antifungal activity of EOs was not different, with a minimum fungicidal concentration of 16% for both fungi. The disease inhibition of EOs increased with their concentration. The highest inhibition of anthracnose caused by both fungi on mangoes was achieved at 16% EO. EOs had no adverse effect on mango quality (pH, total soluble solids, total acidity, color and brightness of mangoes), except firmness and weight loss at high concentrations (16%). Orange EOs can be used as bio-fungicides to control mango anthracnose at high concentrations.

Abstract:Abstract Anthracnose is a very restrictive disease disturbing production, as well as postharvest property of mango fruit in Egypt. Fifteen isolates of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were recovered from mango fruits displayed anthracnose symptoms. PCR assay was achieved in addition to morphological study confirmed that the causative agent of anthracnose in mango fruits is C. gloeosporioides. Anthracnose control of mango fruits by plant extracts was verified. Both ethanol and aqueous extracts prevented the growth of the pathogen in some degrees in vitro. Aqueous and ethanol extracts of Plantago sinaica were the strongest on fungal growth than other plants. A qualitative phytochemical investigation of plant extracts from testing plants designated saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and phenols. Plantago sinaica extract exhibited a higher amount of phenolic compounds than other plants. Analysis of phenolic compounds of Plantago sinaica extract using HPLC showed that ellagic acid represented the highest quantity than other compounds. Electron microscopy showed changes in the ultrastructure of the pathogen hyphae after treatment by Plantago sinaica extract.

Abstract:Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is one of the most important post-harvest diseases affecting mangoes’ post-harvest management, resulting in huge post-harvest losses. However, the present research aims to study the antifungal activity of chitosan and aqueous extracts of Tectona grandis L. and Artemisia annua L. leaves on the development of C. gloeosporioides. In the “in vitro” evaluation, chitosan at the concentration of 2.5% (v/v) and the two extracts evaluated at 10% (w/v) showed a fungicidal effect on C. gloeosporioides. While for the evaluation of mango fruit (“in situ”), the anthracnose disease was controlled with 2.5% (v/v) chitosan and 10% (w/v) aqueous extracts applied after inoculation of C. gloeosporioides. The chitosan and aqueous extract treatments did not affect the acidity and pH of the mango. However, all products used on mango fruit reduced mass loss and delayed the decline in firmness, skin greenness and ascorbic acid content after ripening. They also showed a beneficial effect on total soluble solids content. A concentration of 2.5% chitosan and 10% aqueous extracts effectively inhibited anthracnose disease and improved some ripening parameters of mangoes. Therefore, Chitosan and aqueous extracts of A. annua and Teak (Tectona grandis L.) leaves can be used as an alternative to synthetic chemicals to substantially reduce postharvest mango anthracnose.

Abstract:Essential oils (EOs) have been investigated for their effectiveness against fungal fruit pathogens. The present review article summarises the EOs that inhibit Alternaria alternata and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in the pre- and post-harvest stages of fruits. Thirty-nine scientific papers focusing on the extraction conditions and the antifungal activity of EOs were selected. The retrieved studies came mainly from China and Brazil. Hydrodistillation has been identified as the most used extractive method. The yields and chemical profiles were variable among the species. The in vitro studies were larger than the in vivo studies. The application of EOs reduced the incidence of fungal diseases in tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum), papaya (Carica papaya) and mango (Mangifera indica). EOs resulted as a potential ecological alternative for treating fungal diseases in fruits requiring further investigation.

Abstract:The development of natural essential oil as an alternative to synthetic chemicals in the control of postharvest decay is currently in the spotlight. In the present study, the efficacy of seven essential oils in suppressing Collelotrichum gloeosporioides identified from sweet cherry was evaluated in vitro and clove oil was proved to be the most promising inhibitor. Thus, the antifungal properties and potential mechanisms of clove oil in vitro and in vivo by fumigation and contact treatments were intensively investigated. For C. gloeosporioides, the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of clove oil in air and contact phase were 80 and 300 μL/L in vitro testing, respectively. Based on the radial growth of C. gloeosporioides mycelium in medium, the fumgitoxic ability of essential oil was observed in a dose-dependent manner, which was not as dramatic as that under in vivo conditions. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy of C. gloeosporioides exposed to clove oil exhibited obviously deleterious morphological and ultrastructural alterations confirming the disruption of fungal cell wall and endomembrane system, which resulted in increasing in permeability and causing the loss of intracellular constituents. In future, essential oils, combined with nano-emulsification approaches, could be good candidates as safe and effective antifungal agents for fungal spoilage of fresh commodities.
Inhibitory Efficacy Of Different Essential Oils Against Storage Carrot Rot With Antifungal And Resistance-Inducing Potential

Abstract:The inhibitory effects of essential oils (EOs) derived from coriander, lavender, geranium, thyme, savoury and eucalyptus were assessed against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, the causal agent of carrot white mould. All EOs showed antifungal activity against the pathogen in vitro and in vivo. In addition, all EOs markedly increased 6-methoxymellein in the treated carrots. The EOs of thyme and savoury were found to be more effective than other tested EOs. The enzymatic tests showed that thyme and savoury EOs were more able than lavender EO to significantly increase the level of chitinases, peroxidases, beta-1,3-glucanases, polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase in the treated carrots, indicating that the EOs of thyme and savoury have potential to be considered as effective inducers of resistance against carrot white mould. In this study, all EOs inhibited myceliogenic and carpogenic germination of sclerotia at concentrations 1 and 10 mu l/ml sterile distilled water, respectively. After gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, major component in the thyme EO was found to be thymol (39.15%) followed by p-cymene (13.85%) and carvacrol (10.36%), while in savoury EO were carvacrol (41.9%), gamma-terpinene (17.38) and p-cymene (11.25%).

Abstract:This study aimed to determine the effects of Metschnikowia pulcherrima yeast on storage quality of ‘Tainong’ mango, and elucidate it’s possible anti–disease mechanism. The results showed that M. pulcherrima could inhibit the changes in peel colour, fruit firmness, the contents of total soluble solids, total acid and vitamin C, and maintain the storage quality of mango fruits. An investigation of the mechanism showed that M. pulcherrima competed not only for the primary carbon source, but also for living space with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. In addition, M. pulcherrima promoted the activities of defence-related enzymes, including ß-1,3-glucanase(GLU) and chitinase (CHT), and secreted a small amount of antimicrobial substances composed of volatile and nonvolatile anti-fungal compounds. The results strongly demonstrated that antagonistic yeast M. pulcherrima could be applied as a biocontrol agent for deducing the spoilage and decay of mango fruit.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to determine the composition and evaluate in vitro and in vivo effects of essential oils (Lippia sidoides Cham., Ocimum gratissimum L., Cymbopogon citratus Stapf., Ocimum selloi Benth., Citrus sinensis L., Ocimum micranthum Willd., Ocimum sp., and Piper aduncum L.) on the control of Fusarium rot in melon fruits, caused by the fungus Fusarium pallidoroseum. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and their chemical composition was determined by GCMS and GC-FID. The effect of each essential oil (concentrations of 0, 500, 1500, and 3000μL L-1) on the fungal mycelial growth was evaluated in in vitro experiment. The effective concentration that inhibited 50% of mycelial growth (EC50) was determined through the probit method; mycelial growth index (MGI) was also calculated. The essential oils with higher potential for inhibiting mycelial growth of F. pallidoroseum were evaluated for their inhibitory effect on the fungus spore germination in in vitro and in vivo experiments using melon fruits (variety Galia). Chemical composition analysis of essential oils enabled the identification of varying amounts of chemical compounds, with predominance of monoterpenes. The essential oils of L. sidoides, O. gratissimum, C. citratus, and O. micranthum presented higher inhibiting effects on F. pallidoroseum mycelial growth and spore germination, therefore, they are promising raw materials for the development of commercial fungicides, mainly for controlling postharvest rot caused by F. pallidoroseum.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the effects of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GSBa-1 treatment on anthracnose disease resistance and the metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phenylpropanoids in mangoes during storage. Mangoes were soaked in a solution containing 1 × 108 CFU/mL of B. amyloliquefaciens GSBa-1. The anthracnose disease incidence, disease index, respiration intensity, ethylene release, reactive oxygen species content, and the activities of related metabolic enzymes, phenylpropanoid-related metabolic enzymes, and phenolic acids in the skin and pulp of mangoes were investigated under normal temperature storage conditions. The results showed that the antagonistic bacterial treatment (ABT) did not significantly inhibit the growth of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in vitro. However, it significantly reduced the incidence of mango anthracnose disease when applied to the mango peel. ABT enhanced the latent resistance of mango to anthracnose disease by activating its reactive oxygen and phenylpropanoid metabolism. It maintained higher levels of ROS production and elimination in the peel. Moreover, it rapidly activated manganese superoxide dismutase, induced the accumulation of H2O2, and enhanced the activity of manganese superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and peroxidase in the mango peel. Furthermore, ABT activated phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, cinnamic acid-4-hydroxylase, 4-coumaroyl-CoA ligase, and cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase in the mango peel and pulp, promoting the accumulation of antifungal phenolic acids such as gallic acid, catechins, and ellagic acid. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GSBa-1 may be a potent inhibitor of mango anthracnose, primarily enhancing the resistance of mangoes to anthracnose by synergistically activating ROS in the peel and phenylpropanoid metabolism in the pulp, thereby reducing the incidence of anthracnose effectively.
Impact of Storage Condition on Chemical Composition and Antifungal Activity of Pomelo Extract against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Anthracnose in Post-harvest Mango

Abstract:Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum leads to a tremendous post-harvest mango loss. While chemical fungicides are applied to control anthracnose, natural alternatives are preferred due to food safety and environmental concerns. Pomelo extract (PE) exhibits a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities; however, its effect against anthracnose is unknown. Here we investigated the chemical profile of PE using GC-MS and the anti-anthracnose activity of PE using in vitro and in vivo assays. We also evaluated the impact of storage temperature (0°, 5°, 10°, 20°, −20°, and −80 °C) and light conditions on the composition and antifungal activity of PE. We found that PE inhibited C. gloeosporioides in vitro with an IC50 of 3.2 mL L−1. Applying chitosan-based coating incorporated with 20 mL L−1 PE significantly suppressed anthracnose in post-harvest 'Keitt' mango. A storage temperature below 5 °C substantially preserved major compounds and the antifungal activity of PE after 6 m of storage. Finally, we showed that applying d-limonene, the key constituent of PE, inhibited C. gloeosporioides in vitro (IC50: 10.9 mM) and suppressed anthracnose in vivo. In conclusion, we demonstrated that the application of PE and d-limonene are sustainable methods for anthracnose control in post-harvest crops and established the preservation protocol for PE.

Abstract:In the biorefinery approach, Kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix) peel wastes can be used to produce a varied range of biomaterials, biochemicals, and bioenergy. Kaffir lime fruit peels are a rich source of phenolic, flavonoid, and volatile compounds. Peel essential oil contains volatile compounds including monoterpenes. This covers antifungal activities. Essential oils and their components commonly inhibit fungal growth in citrus fruit. Therefore, the potential of kaffir lime essential oils against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, the causative agent of anthracnose disease in mango fruit, was investigated. The major compounds of essential oil were beta-pinene, limonene, and beta-citronellol. In vitro antifungal activities of unripe kaffir essential oil (UKLO) at a 1500 to 50,000 ppm concentration showed the highest inhibition activities against C. gloeosporioides mycelial growth. The in vivo efficacy showed that UKLO and ripe kaffir essential oil (RKLO) at a concentration of 1500 ppm significantly suppressed the disease development of C. gloeosporioides compared to the control group. The mango coating with UKLO at 1500 ppm had significantly reduced disease severity index has scored 1.00 compared to scored 3.13 of the control group. This study suggested that kaffir lime peel waste essential oil could be applied to protect against mango fungal contamination.

Abstract:During the storage and transportation of the mango fruit, the major source of disease is anthracnose, caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. The objective of this study is to find an appropriate method that not only reduces mango decay but also maintains its postharvest quality. The effects of chemicals, the use of the yeast species Metschnikowia pulcherrima and their combination on storage quality, focusing on the enzyme activity related to disease of Tainong mangos was studied. By immersing the mangoes in M. pulcherrima suspension (1.0×108 cfu mL−1), salicylic acid (SA) solution (50 mg L−1) or calcium chloride (CaCl2) solution (1.0 g L−1), the lesion expansion and decay of the mango fruit caused by C. gloeosporioides could be significantly delayed. These treatments also delayed the changes in quality traits (a* value, firmness, contents of total soluble solids (TSS) and vitamin C (Vc), while the activities of anti-disease enzymes such as polyphenol oxidase (PPO), phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL), chitinase (CHT) and β-1,3-glucanase (GUN) were enhanced as compared to the control treatment. Furthermore, the combination of SA solution, CaCl2 solution and M. pulcherrima suspension presented an additive effect, increasing the efficacy in controlling the disease and maintaining the storage quality of mango fruits. Taken together, our data suggest that the integration of chemical treatments combined with M. pulcherrima could be an alternative to the use of fungicides in postharvest treatment of the mango fruit, specifically for improving storage quality as well as the control of the anthracnose.

Abstract:Pestalotiopsis mangiferae the causal organism of Mango fruits black spot, was highly isolated from three governorates in Egypt. Plant extracts of Clove, Camphor, Oleander, Gall, and Garlic, also some essential oils such as clove, mint, garlic, and camphor were tested on the inhibition, growth, and sporulation of Pestalotiopsis mangifera both under laboratory and field conditions. Under laboratory condition, clove plant extracts suppressed the growth of Pestalotiopsis mangiferae at all tested concentration (10, 15 and 20%). The extracts of garlic and galls had the second and third ranks, in this respect. All tested plant oils reduced the growth of Pestalotiopsis mangiferae significantly in comparison with control. Mint oil followed by camphor on had the best efficiency in reducing the fungal growth. Under field condition application of either galls and/or clove oil and clove extracts (5%) gave the best result. Moreover, the average number of healthy fruits per tree recorded 35 and 34, respectively, in response to the application of galls and clove plant extracts.
