Abstract:Introduction: Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation is the result of exposure at work sites for diagnostic and therapeutic practices. Ionizing radiation is an energy type in the form of electromagnetic waves or particles. Radiographic imaging is extremely valuable as a diagnostic tool in medical fields leading to different health hazards to health care workers (HCWs) and to the surrounding environment if safety measures are not observed. Aim of work: To assess awareness and practice of ionizing radiation protection procedures among (HCWs) occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation at Zagazig University Hospitals. Materials and methods: All HCWs (technicians, nurses, physicians, and physicists) occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation in diagnostic radiology (DR) department, Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine (CO&NM) department, and Nuclear Medicine (NM) unit who accepted to share in the study were included as study population (No=195). A cross-sectional study was carried out at the previous departments in Zagazig University Hospitals. A self-administered, structured questionnaire composed of three sections, A, B and C was the study tool. Section A comprised questions regarding demographic data, section B included questions about awareness of radiation protection procedures, and section C was composed of questions about safe practices of HCWs regarding ionizing radiation exposures. Results: The study revealed that satisfactory awareness of radiation protection procedures among HCWs in the three departments was (51.3 %) with no statistically significant difference between different radiation units. But HCWs had inadequate practice score (18%) regarding the use of safety measures of radiation exposure. Satisfactory awareness of radiation protection procedures of exposed workers was highly significantly associated with higher educational level (44.2%), years of experience ≥ 10 years (36.8 %), being a physician (73.7%) and getting training courses (61.1%). Also, adequate practice of radiation protection procedures among exposed workers was found to be highly significantly associated with higher educational level (74.3%), years of experience ≥ 10 years (68.6%), being a physician (80.0%) and getting training courses (71.4%). Conclusion: satisfactory awareness about radiation protection procedures among exposed HCWs was noted while inadequate practices of radiation protection procedures in the workplace were found.

Abstract:Background: The use of medical radiation in diagnosis and procedural and surgical treatment is increasing. Therefore, healthcare personnel should be adequately aware and knowledgeable about radiation hazards to protect themselves and their patients from its adverse effects. The objective of this study was to examine awareness about radiation hazards and knowledge about protection methods among the anesthesia personnel and surgical subspecialists of a quaternary care academic center. Methods: A validated questionnaire was completed by anesthetic personnel and surgical subspecialists. It consisted of questions that required demographic information and assessed awareness about radiation hazards. In addition, 15 multiple-choice questions assessed knowledge about radiation across the following domains: the main principle of radiation protection, personal annual radiation dose, personal protection equipment, safe distance from an X-ray machine, and susceptible organs. Results: A total of 270 potential participants were emailed and invited to respond to an online questionnaire, and the response rate was 79.3%. Of the 214 participants, 69.2% were women; the mean age of the sample was 34.8 years. Most of the participants (63.1%) considered radiation exposure that occurs as a part of daily work to be very harmful; 86.4% and 78.5% reported that they always wore a lead apron and a thyroid shield when working in an environment that entails radiation exposure, respectively. The mean score for knowledge about radiation hazards and protection was 6.4 ± 2.0 (maximum possible score = 15) Therefore, there is a need to improve anesthetic personnel and surgical subspecialists’ knowledge about radiation protection, especially with regard to the use of lead goggles and harmful doses of radiation. Conclusion: The present findings suggest that there is a reasonable level of awareness but a relative lack of knowledge about radiation hazards and protection among anesthesia personnel and surgical subspecialists. Therefore, continuing medical education on radiation hazards and protection must be mandated.

Abstract:Objective : The aim of this study was to evaluate the radiation knowledge and awareness levels of healthcare workers working in a single center in Mogadishu, Somalia, in terms of age, gender and education levels of the participants. Materials and methods : The research involved 274 healthcare professionals, comprising volunteer physician and other healthcare personnel working at the Somali-Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Training and Research Hospital in Mogadishu. The face-to-face questionnaire consists of 13 questions covering radiation-sensitive or resistant tissues, radiation status of medical imaging devices, biological effects of radiation, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation symbols and radiation protection principles. The study was limited to the health personnel in the hospital. The survey had 274 participants, comprising 126 (46%) women and 148 (54%) men. Of these, 82 (29.9%) were physicians and 192 (70.1%) were other healthcare professionals. Results : It was found that health workers under the age of thirty demonstrated a significantly higher level of knowledge about radiation protection principles than their counterparts over the age of thirty ( p = 0.003). Similarly, it was observed that the level of awareness regarding the extent of knowledge about radiation protection was higher in health workers under thirty years of age than in those over thirty years of age (p: 0.001). It was found to be statistically significant that males were more aware of the potential harms of radiation than females (p: 0.004). It was found to be statistically significant that men were more aware of the radiation content of mammography and X-ray imaging methods than women (p: 0.002 and p: 0.029, respectively). Conclusions : To enhance the number of healthcare professionals in Mogadishu, Somalia, who are aware of the risks associated with radiation and the methods for its mitigation, it was postulated that a comprehensive radiation information and awareness training program could be beneficial.

Abstract:Purpose: Awareness of personnel who are professionally involved with ionizing radiation on the principles of radiation protection is very important; especially for operation room personnel, because they do not receive radiation protection training during their university education in Iran. The aim of this study was to evaluate knowledge and practice of radiographers and operating room personnel about the principles of radiation protection. Materials and Methods: A validated researcher-made questionnaire was used and the study was conducted on 328 medical staff in 2021. Factors such as age, gender, university degree, working years, occupation, and knowledge and practice about radiation protection were recorded. The collected data were analyzed by independent t-test and Pearson correlation analysis using SPSS software. Results: The results of the study showed that age, gender and university degree have no significant effect on the knowledge and practice of radiographers and operating room personnel (p > 0.05). The knowledge and practice of radiographers were significantly higher than operating room personnel (p < 0.05). With regard to working years, there were significant relationships with the knowledge of personnel (p= 0.034), and with practice (p= 0.038). There was a significant correlation between passed training courses of radiation protection and knowledge (p=0.012), and practice (p=0.033). There was a significant correlation between knowledge about radiation protection and practice (p=0.002). Conclusion: It is necessary to encourage staff with lower working years and operating room personnel to participate in radiation protection courses and workshops. It can be suggested to add training programs about radiation protection in university education or in-service education for operating room personnel.

Abstract:Introduction In operating rooms, the routine use of radiological procedures is commonplace. However, this essential tool brings about significant concerns for healthcare workers due to the associated radiological risks. Understanding healthcare workers' attitudes and perceptions about ionizing radiation is crucial for addressing these concerns. Objectives This study aims to assess the perceptions and concerns of healthcare workers regarding radiation risks and their practices in the operating room. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in February and March 2023 among the operating room staff of Habib Bourguiba University Hospital in Sfax, Tunisia. We used a self-administered questionnaire that included socio-professional data. Self-assessment of exposure risk and protection level against ionizing radiation was evaluated on a scale from 0 to 10, and attitudes were assessed using a 5-item Likert scale. Results Our study population consisted of 92 healthcare workers, with 54.3% being male. When asking operating room workers about the availability, accessibility, and quality of lead aprons, the median scores were 3 (IQR [0;6.5]), 2 (IQR [0;5]), and 2 (IQR [0;5]), respectively. The median self-assessment score for exposure risk was 8 (IQR [5.5; 10]), while the median self-assessment score for protection against ionizing radiation was 1 (IQR [0;3]). Sixty percent of the population had limited knowledge of the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, with a median self-assessment knowledge score of 1.5 (IQR [0;3]). Sixty-two percent reported concerns regarding radiological risks. In terms of practices, 44.5% of the staff maintained a distance from the radiation source during intraoperative radiography, and 21.7% used the apron for protection. Dosimeters were not used by any of the participants. Concerns level was associated with self-assessment of exposure risk (p = 0.027). Conclusions In conclusion, awareness of the risks generates anxiety and concern among staff; however, it alone is insufficient to alter our practices. This underscores the imperative for a proactive approach in implementing robust safety measures and comprehensive training programs. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Abstract:Background and Objectives: In recent years, significant developments have occurred in occupational health and safety programs designed to prevent and control work-related illness and injury. The aims of the study were to assess knowledge of nurses on occupational health and safety measures in hospital and their experienced type of occupational hazards’.Methods: A quantitative descriptive study of non-probability sample was conducted on 50 nurses in Rania general hospital. Data was collected from 10th August 2017 to 25th December 2017. A questionnaire was developed for the purpose of data collection which included socio-demographic attributes of the study sample and questions on occupational hazards and occupational health and safety measures. Frequency, percentage and chi-square tests were used for data analysis.Results: Proper disposal of waste (90%), Acquainting rights and obligations / career and your job Descriptions (88%), Using protective clothing (86%), Having vaccination against infectious diseases within the health facility (76%), Providing a clinic for employees at work place (74%), Prompt reporting of accidents/injuries (72%) were the most items which nurses implied to them according their knowledge. Nurses mentioned that they experienced following occupational hazards in the hospital: physical 48%, psychological 28%, mechanical/electrical 12%, chemical 22% and biological 10%. There was a significant and highly significant association between years of experience and level of education of nurses with their overall knowledge on occupational health and safety measures, respectively but not with their age.Conclusions: Nurses did not have complete knowledge regarding occupational health and safety measures and they experienced different types of hazards during their working years.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Radiation exposure poses hazards for health-care providers as well as patients in health-care facilities (HCFs). Radiographic imaging is extremely valuable as a diagnostic tool in medicine, but ionizing radiation and computed tomography (CT) scan carry well-known potential risks. Personnel and radiation safety monitoring is an important safety precaution in the practice of radiography.AIM: The study aimed to assess the occupational radiation exposure and safety protection among medical staff in HCFs in the Eastern Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).MATERIALS AND METHODS: Total of 4 HCFs with radiological services were randomly selected for the study in the period from January to April 2013. The radiation survey has been carried out by the measurement of radiation in the x-ray and CT-scan room at different points of the diagnostic, imaging, and waiting rooms of different hospitals. The radiation safety was assessed by using a questionnaire.RESULTS: The results of our study are surprising and alarming. Data revealed that there are a significant association between the levels of radiation exposure in all selected hospitals concerning imaging and waiting X-ray and CT-scan operating room (P < 0.01). For radiation safety, most hospitals have lead aprons and thyroid shields in place, but only about 50% have lead glasses and lead shields, showing that many hospitals still lack essential equipment. Moreover, actual utilization rate of radiation dosimeters are 57.7% and 68.9%, respectively.CONCLUSION: All medical staff as well as patients are at risk of exposure to x-ray and CT-scan radiation exposure, and the levels are exceeding the standard guidelines. Many hospitals still lack safety protection tools and there is a complete absence of radiation protection equipment. Further studies should be conducted to highlight different aspects of radiation exposure dose and safety protection tools.

Abstract:Introduction: The ever-evolving applications of radiology-radiotherapy, apart from the solutions offered in daily diagnostic and therapeutic problems, expose healthcare workers to the risk of irradiation and its consequences.Aim: The aim of the present study was to evaluate nurses’ knowledge on the risk of radiation during the daily work and radiation protection instructions to be followed during their participation in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving radiation use.Method and Material: The studied sample consisted of 110 nurses working in Public General Hospital of Athens in clinical departments and units so as in laboratories using mainly radiation such as the CT scanner and the catheterization laboratory. For data collection, a special designed questionnaire with questions that reach key areas of the applied radiation protection policy of this hospital was used. Data analysis was performed with the statistical package Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).Results: The majority (87.3%) of the participants were women, with an average age of 39.66 years (± 7.33 years). The best part of the nurses who participated in the study (82.7%) has not attended any training program concerning radiation protection. Forty percent (40%) of the participants say they do not know the policy of their hospital on issues of radiation protection, while 45.5% did not know whether their working section met the prescribed radiation safety criteria. Participants working in radiology sector had significantly higher degree of agreement with the proposals concerning the applied radiation protection policy compared with participants who worked either in pathological and surgical field or in the operating room and the ICU (p = 0.002).Conclusion: All health professionals (doctors, nurses, technicians), should be constantly informed of all the rules related to both personal protective equipment and protective measures of the patient and the environment against radiation, and the rules applied for the proper use of the appropriate equipment.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to assess the level of knowledge, protection and awareness of radiation among healthcare professionals. A total of 413 healthcare professionals from two major training and research hospitals in Istanbul took part in the study. The sample consisted of 26.6% physicians and 73.4% other healthcare professionals. There was considerable variation in the knowledge of radiation content in imaging techniques, with correct response rates of 89.3% for CT, 80.1% for digital X-ray, and 52.8% for MRI. While 69.5% of respondents provided correct answers to questions regarding radiation protection principles, 64.4% demonstrated a lack of sufficient knowledge in this area. It is noteworthy that 48.4% of respondents incorrectly identified the medical imaging technique to which the public is most exposed. It was concluded that further training on radiation-related issues should be provided at the university level and through in-service training for healthcare professionals.

Abstract:Objective: Radiological emergency preparedness and response are increasingly acknowledged as vital components of both emergency readiness and public health. Previous studies have shown that medical providers feel unprepared to respond to radiation incidents. The existing level of knowledge, attitudes, and awareness held by emergency medicine residents and physicians in Oman, remain unexplored. This study aims to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and awareness level of emergency residents and physicians in Oman regarding the management of radiation emergencies. Methods: An electronic survey was distributed to 44 emergency residents and 57 emergency physicians. Results: The response rate was 62.7% (N = 69/110). Notably, 62% reported no prior engagement in radiation emergency training. The majority of participants had neither employed nor received training in operating radiation detection devices. A significant gap in knowledge emerged, with the median self-reported knowledge score of 50/100. The majority of participants (59%) expressed a need for educational programs and materials. Conclusion: Our findings underscore the imperative for enhanced training in radiological incident preparedness for emergency medicine residents and physicians in Oman. The study reveals a clear necessity to bridge the existing gaps in knowledge and attitudes to bolster the readiness of health-care professionals to respond effectively to radiation emergencies.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of radiation dose and associated risks in common diagnostic radiological examinations among radiology staff in comprehensive tertiary hospitals in Wuxi, China. An online questionnaire survey was conducted among radiology staff from seven general tertiary hospitals. The results were compared among different groups, including radiologists, technicians, and nurses. A total of 216 completed questionnaires were collected, with an average accuracy rate of 28.6%. Only 6% of the participants answered more than 50% of the questions correctly. Knowledge regarding the radiation dose for a single-view chest X-ray was known by only 26% of the respondents. Only 8% of the radiology staff demonstrated correct knowledge of managing cases of accidental radiation exposure during unknown pregnancy. The knowledge of radiation dose and its associated carcinogenic risk among radiology staff is inadequate. Underestimation of radiation dose and cancer risk in diagnostic procedures is prevalent, which may lead to suboptimal scanning parameters and potential overuse of radiation in daily practice.

Abstract:Background: This study was conducted to assess the levels of knowledge about MRI scans and safety measures among patients in Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at nine Saudi Arabian hospitals and utilized a questionnaire comprising 22 items that evaluated patients' knowledge regarding MRI scans and safety measures, divided into four sections. The questions encompassed patients' sociodemographic data (A), knowledge about MRI (B), safety measures (C), and communication (D). Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the participant demographics and responses. Results: Out of 446 MRI patients, 60.5% correctly identified that MRI does not involve ionizing radiation, and 78% recognized MRI as a diagnostic tool. Further, 94.2% knew that metal objects are not allowed in MRI rooms. However, 80.3% incorrectly believed that pregnant patients cannot undergo MRI at any time, 57% thought the MRI scanner is turned off when not in use, and 72.6% did not recognize any MRI-compatible devices. About 62% were unaware of the need for kidney function tests with contrast agents, and 43% reported anxiety during MRI scans. Overall, 57% of the patients had limited knowledge of MRI safety, with 39.5% considering their understanding adequate. Educational attainment and employment status were significantly associated with improved MRI knowledge. Most participants sought information from healthcare professionals. Conclusion: This study highlights the need to educate patients about MRI procedures and safety protocols. Significant gaps remain in patients' knowledge, especially regarding safety measures. Higher levels of educational attainment and employment status were linked to greater levels of MRI knowledge, suggesting the importance of targeted educational interventions. Healthcare professionals were the patients' main information sources; nevertheless, comprehensive and accessible information is necessary. Improved communication and training for healthcare providers can enhance patient understanding and experiences during MRI scans.

Abstract:Background: Maintaining patients’ safety is a basic professional role of radiographers. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the technical, protective, and technological operation of interventional radiologists. Objectives: The current study aimed to determine the protective and technical performance of radiographers and their knowledge and expertise. Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, 60 radiographers working in radiology wards of hospitals affiliated to the Zahedan University are included. A checklist whose reliability and validity were previously established was used to collect data. For the radiography staff, 17 technical and 12 protective items were checked and recorded during three work shifts. Data were analyzed by SPSS. Results: The performance score of 27 males (45%) and 33 females (65%) was assessed. Seven factors of radiology staff, including gender, employment status, age, work experience, number of shifts, Work Shift, and Education, were evaluated, and that number of shifts was statistically significant. Conclusions: The radiographers’ awareness of technical and protective principles was at a medium level. Increasing attention to the quality of academic training and continuous education is necessary.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a structured online questionnaire was distributed from March to May 2021. Of the 350 eligible students, 219 students answered the questionnaire (Response rate=62.6). Data were analyzed using the statistical software IBM-SPSS version 22. Descriptive statistic, Independent- samples T-Test, and ANOVA tests were used. Results: The majority of participants were female (81.7%) and studying in a diploma program. 21% of nursing students have experienced a needle stick injury. The mean scores for knowledge, attitudes, and practice were (M±SD:78.2% ±12.9, M±SD:80.6% ±7.1, and M±SD:81.2% ±7.6) respectively. In terms of knowledge, attitudes, and practice the mean scores were statistically significant between nursing students who attended a safety precautions course and those who didn not (P-value <.05). In terms of attitudes, the mean scores were statistically significant between diploma and bachelor students (P-value =.026).In terms of practice, the means scores were statistically significant between males and females (P-value =.017), nursing students who had experience with needle sticks and those who didn’t (P-value =.015). Conclusion: The authors recommend that clinical training departments and universities continue to offer occupational health and safety courses and training for health science students. Since the training had a positive impact on the students' practices.
Monitoring Occupational Radiation Dose in Radiography Students: Implications for Safety and Training

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to investigate the occupational exposure of undergraduate radiography students to ionising radiation and evaluate the effectiveness of safety protocols and training in reducing radiation exposure. Methods: This study tracked undergraduate radiography students from the University of Sharjah, UAE, using thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) from 2015 to 2023. TLD readings were conducted every 15 weeks during 384 h of clinical placement. This study encompassed various radiographic procedures, and the TLDs were used to measure shallow (HP (0.07)) and deep doses (HP (10)). Results: A data analysis from 599 dosimeters revealed an average of 74 students annually. The average effective doses for HP (10) and HP (0.07) were 0.227 mSv and 0.222 mSv, respectively. These doses were well-below the recommended annual limits. Conclusion: This study's results indicated that radiography students' occupational radiation exposure during clinical training was within the safe limits, demonstrating the effectiveness of training and safety protocols. A comparison with international data corroborated the low exposure levels. Clinical training is essential for radiography students, and this study highlights the success of safety protocols in minimising occupational radiation exposure. Continuous monitoring and education are crucial to sustaining these positive outcomes.
Assessing the Adherence to Safety Protocol Among Personnel Working in the Dental Radiology Department: A Qualitative Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: Implementing recommended radiation safety protocols in the radiology departments is crucial for the safety of the working personnel, patients, and environment. Similarly, adherence and continuous monitoring are essential, and few studies have been conducted in dental radiology settings regarding the occupational safety of employees. Hence, the present study was carried out to assess the knowledge and adherence of personnel to safety protocol in the dental radiology department. Materials and methods: The questionnaire-based study was conducted in a dental institute involving the relevant staff and students, consisting of 25 participants including radiographers (a technician, faculty, and postgraduates) and auxiliary staff. The 14-element questionnaire with questions on radiation exposure, hazards, safety protocols, protective devices, and infrastructure was given to study participants, and data was obtained. Results: Overall, the responses to the questionnaire were favorable in terms of awareness or knowledge of participants about radiation protection and protection devices. Notably, 71.4 % (15) of the participants agreed that they consistently wear PPDs, and 86.5% (18) agreed that the radiology operatory is well-equipped concerning radiation safety measures. On the whole, the responses to the questionnaire were encouraging from the auxiliary staff in terms of radiation protection awareness. Conclusion: The perception of study participants provides valuable insight to enhance the adherence to radiation safety protocol in the institutes. The study demonstrated that most participants revealed adequate knowledge of radiation exposure hazards, the need for personnel protection, and adherence to radiation safety protocol. This study would serve as the pilot project and may provide a platform for further multicenter studies to be carried out.
Investigation of the Radiographer's adherence and compliance with radiation protection and infection control practices during COVID-19 mobile radiography

Abstract:Radiological staff, especially radiographers, work as front liners against the COVID-19 outbreak. This study aims to assess compliance with radiation protection and infection control practices during COVID-19 mobile radiography procedures. This cross-sectional study included 234 radiographers (females, 56%, n = 131; males, 44%, n = 103) who were asked to complete an online questionnaire consisting of demographic data, radiation protection and infection control practices during COVID-19 portable cases, and knowledge and awareness. After informed consent was completed, SPSS statistical software was used for the data analysis. The most common age group of participants ranged from 18 to 25 years old (30.3%, n = 71). Bachelor's degree holders were 74.4% (n = 174). Most radiographers (39.7%, n = 93) had a working experience of 1-5 years, followed by 27.8% (n = 65) with more than 16 years of experience. Most respondents (62.4%, n = 146) handled approximately 1-5 cases daily, the majority of them (56%, n = 131) stated affirmatively they had obtained special training to handle COVID-19, and when inquired if they had received any special allowances for handling COVID-19 suspected/confirmed cases most of them stated negative (73.9%, n = 173). Most participants stated that they always wear a TLD during portable cases (67.1%, n = 157) and a lead apron (51.7%, n = 121). Around 73% (n = 171) knew the latest information on COVID-19 and attended the COVID-19 awareness course. A significant association was found between the work experience of the radiographers and their responses to following the best practices (p = 0.018, α = 0.05). Radiographers who had COVID-19 training (μ = 48.78) tend to adhere more to best practices than those who have not (p = 0.04, α = 0.05). Further, respondents who handled more than 16/more COVID-19 suspected/confirmed cases followed the best practices more (μ = 50.38) than those who handled less (p = 0.04, α = 0.05). This study revealed detailed information on radiation protection and infection control practices during COVID-19 mobile radiography. It has been observed that the participants/radiographers have good knowledge and awareness of radiation protection and infection-control practices. The present results may be used to plan future requirements regarding resources and training to ensure patient safety.
