Abstract:International Journal of Computational Methods, Ahead of Print. The flow and heat transfer characteristics in a three-dimensional cavity filled with a conducting fluid are investigated in this study in the presence of a constant magnetic field. The three-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations and energy equation are solved directly using a self-developed method, SCM–ACM, which combines the spectral collocation method (SCM) with high-precision and exponential convergence, and the artificial compressibility method (ACM) with easy implementation and good numerical stability. In this paper, we examine the effects of Hartmann numbers (Ha) ranging from 0 to 100, magnetic field directions, and Grashof numbers (Gr) ranging from [math] to [math] on the structure of the flow and temperature fields, with a Prandtl number (Pr) of 0.71. The results show the Grashof and Hartmann numbers have a significant impact on the flow and temperature distribution in the middle of the cavity, but little effect on that near the walls. As the Grashof number increases, a stable thermal stratification is formed at the center of the cube, and thermal boundary layers are formed near the horizontal walls. The increase in Grashof number enhances the heat transfer rate and increases the temperature difference between the upper hot fluid and the lower cold fluid in the cube. Furthermore, the increase in Grashof number enhances the convective intensity between the isothermal walls, leading to the formation of more vortices, which move toward the corners due to the combined action of centrifugal force and inertia. The Hartmann number has stabilizing effects on the flow and weakens the heat transfer. With a higher Grashof number the magnetic effects become more notable. When [math], the magnetic effects are no longer significant. The magnetic field [math] perpendicular to the main circulation plane exhibits the strongest stability for the flow.

Abstract:Liquid-metals as coolant material in a fusion reactor have a significant role in the design of advanced reactors. To understand it better, investigation of thermal behavior under a magnetic field is needed, such as in the case of low Prandtl (Pr) number fluid flow with buoyancy effect. In the present study, direct numerical simulations (DNS) for low Pr number fluid flow of turbulent heat transfer with buoyancy effect has been carried out under a magnetic field. In this simulation the values of Hartmann number Ha were kept as 0 and 6, and Prandtl number was 0.06. Grashof numbers were 1.3 x 10(6) and 4.8 x 10(6). Using DNS the parameters such as mean temperature, turbulent heat flux, and temperature variant were quantified. The Reynolds number for channel flow based on friction velocity, viscosity, and channel half-width was set to be constant as Re(tau) = 150. A uniform magnetic field was applied in a direction perpendicular to the wall of the channel. Using the simulation we could see that with an increase in heat transfer, thermal plume by the effect of buoyancy filled the entire region of the channel. In case of an applied magnetic field, it was seen that the turbulence became weak with the magnetic field, although the thermal transport was also increased by the buoyancy effect of the thermal plume. Abstract:Zero-equation heat transfer models based on the constant turbulent Prandtl number are evaluated using direct numerical simulation (DNS) data for fully developed channel flows imposed on a uniform wall normal magnetic field. Quasi-theoretical turbulent Prandtl numbers are estimated by DNS data of various molecular Prandtl number fluids. From the viewpoint of highly-accurate magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) heat transfer prediction, the parameters of the turbulent eddy viscosity of the k-epsilon model are optimized under the magnetic fields. Consequently, we use the zero-equation model based on a constant turbulent Prandtl number to demonstrate MHD heat transfer, and show the applicability of using this model to predict the heat transfer. Abstract:Direct numerical simulation (DNS) for the low Pr number fluid flow of turbulent heat transfer with a buoyancy effect has been carried out under a magnetic field in a spanwsie direction. The result is compared with the wall-normal one. The buoyancy effect and the magnetic direction are considered for some statistic data: mean temperature, turbulent heat flux and temperature variant. The Prandtl number was 0.06. The magnetic field at Ha = 12.0 in a wall-normal direction and at Ha = 12.0 in a spanwise direction taken from the electric potential equation was applied to a constant magnetic field. Grashof numbers were 4.8 x 10(6). The Reynolds number for the channel flow based on friction velocity, viscosity and channel half-width was set to be constant as Re-tau = 150. Consequently, the thermal efficiency is reduced in the magnetic direction. That is, the thermal reduction by the magnetic field in the spanwise direction is less than that in the wall-normal direction.

Abstract:To investigate Magneto-Hydro-Dynamics (MHD) effects on structures of turbulence near a free surface, Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of free surface turbulent flows imposed on a wall-normal magnetic field were conducted under the friction Reynolds number 400 with the Hartmann number 0, 10, 14, and 16. As the results, we can succeed to obtain the all information to develop and validate the RANS model such as a k-epsilon model. Near free surface, the MHD dissipation term of the turbulent kinetic energy shows the dominant contribution, but one of the turbulent dissipation rate gives little influence for the transport process. Furthermore, the validity of the modeling of MHD effects on the free-surface proposed by Smolentsev et al., Int. J. Eng. Sci. (2002) was shown by means of the present DNS database.

Abstract:The lower solar atmosphere is a layer with a thickness of about 2 000 km, however, it is full of dynamics with different scales and various features with different characteristics. More importantly, it is the only path through which the energy inside the convection zone is transferred into the corona so as to heat the latter to 1 MK. In addition, the lower solar atmosphere is the only layer in the solar atmosphere where the magnetic field can be ac-curately measured so far. All these turn this thin layer into the spotlight of the radiative magnetohydrodynamic research. In this paper, we review all the progress both in numerical research and numerical methods, with the purpose to shed light on future development in this research area.

Abstract:We develop an unconditionally stable numerical method for solving the coupling between two fluids (frictional forces/heatings, ionization, and recombination), and investigate the dynamical condensation process of thermally unstable gas that is provided by the shock waves in a weakly ionized and magnetized interstellar medium by using two-dimensional two-fluid magnetohydrodynamical simulations. If we neglect the effect of magnetic field, it is known that condensation driven by thermal instability can generate high density clouds whose physical condition corresponds to molecular clouds (precursor of molecular clouds). In this paper, we study the effect of magnetic field on the evolution of supersonic converging HI flows and focus on the case in which the orientation of magnetic field to converging flows is orthogonal. We show that the magnetic pressure gradient parallel to the flows prevents the formation of high density and high column density clouds, but instead generates fragmented, filamentary HI clouds. With this restricted geometry, magnetic field drastically diminishes the opportunity of fast molecular cloud formation directly from the warm neutral medium, in contrast to the case without magnetic field.
High-order finite-volume integration schemes for subsonic magnetohydrodynamics

Abstract:We present an efficient dimension-by-dimension finite-volume method which solves the adiabatic magnetohydrodynamics equations at high discretization order, using the constrained-transport approach on Cartesian grids. Results are presented up to tenth order of accuracy. This method requires only one reconstructed value per face for each computational cell. A passage through high-order point values leads to a modest growth of computational cost with increasing discretization order. At a given resolution, these high-order schemes present significantly less numerical dissipation than commonly employed lower-order approaches. Thus, results of comparable accuracy are achievable at a substantially coarser resolution, yielding overall performance gains. We also present a way to include physical dissipative terms: viscosity, magnetic diffusivity and cooling functions, respecting the finite-volume and constrained-transport frameworks.

Abstract:Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) caused by the interaction of a shock wave and a density interface in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is investigated numerically using the ideal compressible magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) equations. The MHD equations are solved with the corner transport upwind + constrained transport algorithm that guarantees the divergence-free constraint on the magnetic field. The numerical results clearly capture the evolution of the density interface induced by the RMI for both HD and MHD situations, which are in good agreement with the previous experimental and numerical results. Moreover, current numerical results reveal a potential stabilizing mechanism of the flow instability by the transverse magnetic field: it is found that the magnetic tension produces a torque on the interface fluid, which is opposite to the torque driven by the velocity shear; therefore, the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability on the density interface caused by the velocity shear is effectively suppressed. In addition, detailed information about the magnetic strength, magnetic energy, magnetic tension, and vorticity on the density interface is also quantitatively analyzed, and the results suggest that the RMI is quite an efficient mechanism for the amplification of the magnetic field, which, in turn, enhances the suppression of the flow instability.

Abstract:The study of viscoelastic fluids is of great significance and has received considerable attention in recent decades. In this work, the numerical analysis for the two-dimensional MHD flow and heat transfer of generalized Maxwell fluid through the rectangular pipe is implemented and the nonlinear behaviors of the fluid are characterized. Temporal and spatial fractional derivatives are introduced to depict the transport mechanism of the fluid. And the coupled nonlinear fractional governing equations are proposed to character the flow and heat transfer processes of the fluid under the action of magnetic fields and pressure gradients. Then, finite difference algorithm is developed and the coupled alternating direction implicit algorithms are presented for the coupled fractional systems. The validity and accuracy of the numerical algorithm is tested by comparing numerical solutions with exact solutions of a numerical example. Moreover, the consistency between our numerical solutions and the results of previous work also indicates the feasibility of the numerical method. The influences of pressure gradient, fractional parameters and other related parameters on fluid flow velocity and temperature are displayed, graphically. The results indicate that compared to temperature, pressure gradient has a greater impact on fluid velocity and promotes fluid flow. The changes in other model parameters result in different trends in fluid velocity and temperature distribution, reflecting the significant role of each parameter in fluid flow and heat transfer behavior.

Abstract:Axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) can be invoked for describing astrophysical magnetized flows and formulated to model stellar magnetospheres including main-sequence stars (e.g. the Sun), compact stellar objects [e.g. magnetic white dwarfs (MWDs), radio pulsars, anomalous X-ray pulsars, magnetars, isolated neutron stars, etc.] and planets as a major step forward towards a full three-dimensional model construction. Using powerful and reliable numerical solvers based on two distinct finite-difference method and finite-element method schemes of algorithm, we examine axisymmetric steady-state or stationary MHD models in Throumoulopoulos & Tasso, finding that their separable semi-analytic non-linear solutions are actually not unique given their specific selection of several free functionals and chosen boundary conditions. Similar situations of multiple non-linear solutions with the same boundary conditions actually also happen to force-free magnetic field models of Low & Lou. The multiplicity of non-linear steady MHD solutions gives rise to differences in the total energies contained in the magnetic fields and flow velocity fields as well as in the asymptotic behaviours approaching infinity, which may in turn explain why numerical solvers tend to converge to a non-linear solution with a lower energy than the corresponding separable semi-analytic one. By properly adjusting model parameters, we invoke semi-analytic and numerical solutions to describe different kinds of scenarios, including nearly parallel case and the situation in which the misalignment between the plasma flow and magnetic field is considerable. We propose that these MHD models are capable of describing the magnetospheres of MWDs as examples of applications with moderate conditions (including magnetic field) where the typical values of several important parameters are consistent with observations. Physical parameters can also be estimated based on such MHD models directly. We discuss the challenges of developing numerical extrapolation MHD codes in view of the non-linear degeneracy.
Reynolds number dependence of Lagrangian dispersion in direct numerical simulations of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic turbulence

Abstract:Large-scale magnetic fields thread through the electrically conducting matter of the interplanetary and interstellar medium, stellar interiors, and other astrophysical plasmas, producing anisotropic flows with regions of high-Reynolds-number turbulence. It is common to encounter turbulent flows structured by a magnetic field with a strength approximately equal to the root-mean-square magnetic fluctuations. In this work, direct numerical simulations of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence influenced by such a magnetic field are conducted for a series of cases that have identical resolution, and increasing grid sizes up to $2048^3$. The result is a series of closely comparable simulations at Reynolds numbers ranging from 1,400 up to 21,000. We investigate the influence of the Reynolds number from the Lagrangian viewpoint by tracking fluid particles and calculating single-particle and two-particle statistics. The influence of Alfvénic fluctuations and the fundamental anisotropy on the MHD turbulence in these statistics is discussed. Single-particle diffusion curves exhibit mildly superdiffusive behaviors that differ in the direction aligned with the magnetic field and the direction perpendicular to it. Competing alignment processes affect the dispersion of particle pairs, in particular at the beginning of the inertial subrange of time scales. Scalings for relative dispersion, which become clearer in the inertial subrange for larger Reynolds number, can be observed that are steeper than indicated by the Richardson prediction.

Abstract:In this article, natural convection of a magnetic fluid in a cubic cavity with a heat generating object inside and under a uniform magnetic field is simulated by the lattice Boltzmann method. Results obtained from the present simulations are shown to be agreed well with our experimental measurements, and reveal more of effects of the magnetic field on the flow and heat transfer of the magnetic fluids.

Abstract:General three-dimensional toroidal ideal magnetohydrodynamic equilibria with a continuum of nested flux surfaces are susceptible to forming singular current sheets when resonant perturbations are applied. The presence of singular current sheets indicates that, in the presence of non-zero resistivity, magnetic reconnection will ensue, leading to the formation of magnetic islands and potentially regions of stochastic field lines when islands overlap. Numerically resolving singular current sheets in the ideal MHD limit has been a significant challenge. This work presents numerical solutions of the Hahm-Kulsrud-Taylor (HKT) problem, which is a prototype for resonant singular current sheet formation. The HKT problem is solved by two codes: a Grad-Shafranov (GS) solver and the SPEC code. The GS solver has built-in nested flux surfaces with prescribed magnetic fluxes. The SPEC code implements multi-region relaxed magnetohydrodynamics (MRxMHD), where the solution relaxes to a Taylor state in each region while maintaining force balance across the interfaces between regions. As the number of regions increases, the MRxMHD solution approaches the ideal MHD solution assuming a continuum of nested flux surfaces. We demonstrate excellent agreement between the numerical solutions obtained from the two codes through a thorough convergence study.

Abstract:The full MHD equations, governing the flow due to the axisymmetric stretching of a sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field, can be cast in a self similar form. This allows evaluation of the induced magnetic field and its effect on the flow and heat transfer. The problem involves three parameters- the magnetic Prandtl number, the magnetic interaction number, and the Prandtl number. Numerical solutions are obtained for the velocity field, the magnetic field, and the temperature, at different values of the magnetic Prandtl number and the magnetic interaction number. The contributions of the viscous dissipation, Joule heating, and streamwise diffusion to the heat flux toward the sheet are assessed.

Chaotic advection in a steady three-dimensional MHD flow

Abstract:We investigate a real 3D stationary flow characterized by chaotic advection generated by a magnetic field created by permanent magnets acting on a weakly conductive fluid subjected to a weak constant current. The model under consideration involves the Stokes equations for viscous incompressible fluid at low Reynolds number in which the density forces correspond to the Lorentz force generated by the magnetic field of the magnets and the electric current through the fluid. An innovative numerical approach based on a mixed finite element method has been developed and implemented for computing the flow velocity fields with the electromagnetic force. This ensures highly accurate numerical results, allowing a detailed analysis of the chaotic behavior of fluid trajectories through the computations of associated Poincaré sections and Lyapunov exponents. Subsequently, an examination of mixing efficiency is conducted, employing computations of contamination and homogeneity rates, as well as mixing time. The obtained results underscore the relevance of the modeling and computational tools employed, as well as the design of the magnetohydrodynamic device used.

Numerical Simulations of Magnetic Effects on Zonal Flows in Giant Planets

Abstract:Jupiter and Saturn exhibit alternating east-west jet streams as seen from surface. The origin of these zonal flows has been debated for decades. The high-precision gravity measurements by Juno mission and the grand finale of Cassini mission have revealed that the zonal flows observed at the surface may extend several thousand kilometres deep and stop around the transition region from molecular to metallic hydrogen, suggesting the magnetic braking effect on zonal flows. In this study, we perform a set of magnetohydrodynamic simulations in a spherical shell with radially variable electrical conductivity to investigate the interaction between magnetic fields and zonal flows. A key feature of our numerical models is that we impose a background dipole magnetic field on the anelastic rotating convection. By varying the strength of the imposed magnetic field and the vigor of convection, we investigate how the magnetic field interacts with the convective motions and the convection-driven zonal flows. Our simulations reveal that the magnetic field tends to destroy zonal flows in the metallic hydrogen and suppress zonal flows in the molecular envelope, while the magnetic field may enhance the radial convective motions. We extract a quantitative relation between the magnetic field strength and the amplitude of zonal flows at the surface through our simulations, which roughly matches the observed magnetic field and zonal wind speed of Jupiter and Saturn. This discovery provides support from a new perspective for the scenario of deep convection-driven zonal winds which are confined to the molecular hydrogen layers in giant planets.
