Abstract:Biological diversity is a concept that contains multiple facets, of which functional diversity is considered to be more integrative to describe the relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In recent decades, functional diversity patterns have been assessed along elevational gradients in plants and birds. However, few empirical studies have been conducted to reveal amphibian functional diversity patterns between elevational zonations on mountains. In the present study, we investigated amphibian ecomorphologically functional diversity patterns in different elevational zonations of Nepal Himalaya. Our results indicated that functional space occupied by amphibian assemblages differed in size between elevational zonations, with assemblages in zonation-2 (500–1300 m) occupying the highest proportion. In terms of the position in functional space, assemblages in low elevational zonations (zonation 1 & 2) differed significantly from those in high elevational zonations (zonation 3–5). Distribution of individuals in the five assemblages along the six axes of the functional space was significantly different between most pairs of comparisons, while the difference varied between assemblages along axes. Interestingly, despite morphologically extreme amphibians accounted for small proportions of the total number of amphibians, they filled a large proportion of the six dimensional functional space. More importantly, most of the extreme amphibians were also the most functional uniqueness individuals, and they were widely distributed in all the zonations. Therefore, functional vulnerability of amphibian assemblages exists throughout all the elevational zonations. Accordingly, extreme amphibians with most functional uniqueness should be in particular well protected to maintain amphibian functional diversity. Further research can explore the mechanism underlying the unique amphibian functional diversity patterns in Nepal Himalaya.

Abstract:Aim Mountain systems harbour disproportionate biodiversity on Earth. However, the mechanism underlying community assembly along elevational gradients remains unclear due to the complexity of environmental constraints and biotic interactions. Birds play a crucial role in mountain system and are sensitive to environmental changes, making them an ideal taxon for exploring diversity patterns and the underlying assembly processes. We aimed to identify the elevational patterns of multifaceted bird diversity and explore how different ecological processes drive community assembly. Location A 2600 m elevational gradient on the eastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. Methods We identified the elevational patterns and assembly processes of alpha‐ and beta‐diversity in the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional dimensions. We compared the multidimensional beta‐diversity components and assessed the response of beta‐diversity to variations in elevational and environmental distances. Finally, we examined the roles of spatial and environmental factors in structuring the diversity patterns. Results We observed bimodal elevational patterns across species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and functional diversity but distinct community structures in terms of mean pairwise phylogenetic, and functional diversity. We detected a linear decline in phylogenetic and functional diversity with increasing elevation after controlling for the confounding effect of species richness. We documented relatively high taxonomic and phylogenetic total beta‐diversity, but low functional total beta‐diversity. Turnover dissimilarity contributed much more to total beta‐diversity than nestedness‐resultant dissimilarity. The elevational patterns of standardised measures indicated that competition exclusion and environmental filtering jointly shaped the community assembly process. In general, mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, and area significantly influenced the majority of diversity measures. Conclusions Our results revealed incongruent community structures across phylogenetic and functional diversity. Additionally, our results indicated that species with similar ecological performances or distinct lineages may exhibit convergent adaptations to cold and dry environments. These findings provide insights into the mechanistic understanding of the community assembly process and assist in conservation planning in mountain systems by integrating multifaceted diversity across different dimensions.

Abstract:Elevational gradients provide an excellent opportunity to assess biodiversity patterns and community structure. Previous studies mainly focus on higher elevations or are limited to small areas in mountainous regions. Little information can be found on amphibian biodiversity in middle- and low-elevational areas, hence our study was devoted to filling up the current gaps in these research areas. To understand the variability of biodiversity of amphibian species in the Fujian Junzifeng National Nature Reserve in eastern China, our study included taxonomic and phylogenetic components to describe the various patterns of regional and elevational distribution. The results showed that (1) most of the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity metrics were correlated; with regard to the surveyed area, Faith's phylogenetic diversity index (PD) and net relatedness index (NRI) were positively correlated with the Shannon-Wiener index (H'), Margalef index (DMG), and species richness (S), while negatively with the Pielou index; whereas for elevation, only the Pielou index was positively correlated with the nearest taxon index (NTI), but negatively with other indices; (2) taxonomic and phylogenetic diversities did not differ among the three survey locations but differed significantly along the elevational gradient; Simpson index, H', S, and DMG had a hump-shaped relationship with elevations, and PD decreased gradually with the increase in elevation, whereas NRI and NTI sharply increased at the elevation above 900 m; (3) the species range size and the corresponding midpoint of amphibians were affected by a strong phylogenetic signal, which supports the elevational Rapoport's rule upon removal of Pachytriton brevipes and Boulenophrys sanmingensis from the study.

Abstract:We studied frog biodiversity along an elevational gradient in the Hengduan Mountains, China. Endemic and non‐endemic elevational diversity patterns were examined individually. Competing hypotheses were also tested for these patterns. Species richness of total frogs, endemics and non‐endemics peaked at mid‐elevations. The peak in endemic species richness was at higher elevations than the maxima of total species richness. Endemic species richness followed the mid‐domain model predictions, and showed a nonlinear relationship with temperature. Water and energy were the most important variables in explaining elevational patterns of non‐endemic species richness. A suite of interacting climatic and geometric factors best explained total species richness patterns along the elevational gradient. We suggest that the mid‐domain effect was an important factor to explain elevational richness patterns, especially in regions with high endemism.

Abstract:Null model analyses suggested that the community structure of aquatic arthropods across the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau was often the result of stochastic processes, likely driven by the harsh environmental conditions and historical biogeographical factors in this high‐elevation treasure. While stochastic processes were prevalent, some streams and wetlands exhibited overdispersion and clustering, indicating the potential importance of competitive exclusion and habitat filtering, respectively. Environmental filtering and dispersal limitation were important drivers of diversity patterns, with local environment having a more significant impact than spatial and land use factors. Revealing the mechanisms underlying community organization has long been a central interest for ecologists and biogeographers. Recent findings have suggested that different dimensions of biodiversity may be shaped by contrasting ecological processes, offering complementary insights about community assembly. However, studies integrating multiple diversity facets across the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau (QTP) remain insufficient. We combined multiple analytical frameworks to unravel the patterns (taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic) and correlates (local environment, land use and dispersal pathways) of aquatic arthropod diversity in lotic (stream) and lentic (wetland) ecosystems of the QTP. We observed strong phylogenetic signals in most functional traits, pointing to the influence of evolutionary processes on these faunas. Null models indicated that community structure in most streams and wetlands was mostly the result of random draws from the regional functional and phylogenetic species pool. The prevalence of stochasticity was most likely associated with the interplay of the paleogeographical history, the extremely harsh environmental conditions at high elevations and the subsequent impoverishment of the regional species pool. However, some streams and wetlands also exhibited phylogenetic overdispersion and functional clustering, emphasizing the potential importance of competitive exclusion and habitat filtering, respectively. Variation partitioning further revealed that both environmental filtering and dispersal limitation accounted for the spatial variation of diversity measures, with local environment overriding the effects of space and catchment land use. Overall, this study improves our understanding of community organization and diversity patterns in environmentally extreme alpine catchments, with broad implications for the conservation and management of one of the world's most important high‐altitude treasures.

Abstract:Elevational gradients are the focus of development and evaluation of general theories on biodiversity. However, elevational studies of microorganisms and the underlying mechanisms remain understudied, especially at regional scales. Here, we examined stream bacterial and fungal communities along an elevational gradient of 990-4600 m with a geographic distance up to 500 km in the southeastern Tibetan Plateau and further analyzed their elevational patterns and drivers of three biodiversity indicators, including species richness, ecological uniqueness, and community composition. Bacteria and fungi showed distinct elevational trends in species richness and consistently decreasing patterns in their ecological uniqueness. The distance-decay relationships were concordant for the two microbial groups, while fungi showed higher dissimilarity and a lower turnover rate. Interestingly, bacterial and fungal compositions substantially differed between the elevations below and above 3000 m. Climate predictors, such as the mean annual temperature and precipitation seasonality, had greater effects than local environment drivers. Notably, fungal diversity was mainly influenced by climate, while bacterial diversity was explained by the shared contributions of climate and local factors. Collectively, these findings revealed the elevational patterns of stream microbial biodiversity across mountains on a large spatial scale and highlight their underlying response mechanisms to environmental predictors.

Abstract:The contributions and interaction of biotic and abiotic processes in community assembly are crucial for understanding the elevational patterns of biodiversity. The combined analyses of taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity are necessary to resolve this issue. By investigating vegetation in 24 transects sampled on Hongla Snow Mountain, in the central Hengduan Mountain Ranges in Southwest China, we delineated the elevational vegetation spectrum on the eastern and western slopes, analyzed the elevational variation in taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity of woody plant species, and compared the community structure of phylogeny and function in the low-elevational shrublands, mid-elevational forests, and alpine shrubs and meadows. The species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and functional diversity of woody plants showed nonstandard hump-shaped patterns with two peaks along the elevational gradient. The community structure of phylogeny and function (including tree height, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf thickness, bark thickness, and wood density) clustered in the low-elevation shrub communities, being random and over-dispersed in mid-elevational forests. The phylogenic structure was over-dispersed in alpine communities, whereas the functional structure was clustered. Elevational patterns in taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity, together with the mean and variation in woody plant functional traits, suggested drought stress and freeze stress as environmental filters dominating the assembly of low and high elevation non-forest communities, and a conspicuous effect of biotic facilitation was also suggested for alpine habitats. By contrast, interspecific competition dominated the community assembly of forests at mid-elevations. The difference in biodiversity indices between the west and east slopes reflected the effects of the Indian Monsoon on the geomorphic patterns of ecosystem structure. These results increased our understanding of biodiversity patterns and underlying mechanisms in the Hengduan Mountains of Southwest China and highlighted the priorities for biodiversity conservation in this region.

Abstract:Comparing elevational gradients across a wide spectrum of climatic zones offers an ideal system for testing hypotheses explaining the altitudinal gradients of biodiversity. We document elevational patterns of lizard and snake species richness, and explore how land area and climatic factors may affect species distributions of lizards and snakes. Our synthesis found 42 lizard species and 94 snake species known from the Hengduan Mountains. The lizards are distributed between 500 and 3500 m, and the snakes are distributed between 500 and 4320 m. The relationship between species richness and elevation for lizards and snakes is unimodal. Land area explains a significant amount of the variation in lizard and snake species richness. The cluster analysis reveals pronounced distinct assemblages for lizards and snakes to better reflect the vertical profiles of climate in the mountains. Climatic variables are strongly associated with lizard and snake richness along the elevational gradient. The data strongly implicate water availability as a key constraint on lizard species richness, and annual potential evapotranspiration is the best predictor of snake species richness along the elevational gradient in the Hengduan Mountains.

Abstract:Aim Data and analyses of elevational gradients in diversity have been central to the development and evaluation of a range of general theories of biodiversity. Elevational diversity patterns have, however, been severely understudied for microbes, which often represent decomposer subsystems. Consequently, generalities in the patterns of elevational diversity across different trophic levels remain poorly understood. Our aim was to examine elevational gradients in the diversity of macroinvertebrates, diatoms and bacteria along a stony stream that covered a large elevational gradient.Location Laojun Mountain, Yunnan province, China.Methods The sampling scheme included 26 sites spaced at elevational intervals of 89 m from 1820 to 4050 m elevation along a stony stream. Macroinvertebrate and diatom richness were determined based on the morphology of the specimens. Taxonomic richness for bacteria was quantified using a molecular fingerprinting method. Over 50 environmental variables were measured at each site to quantify environmental variables that could correlate with the patterns of diversity. We used eigenvector-based spatial filters with multiple regressions to account for spatial autocorrelation.Results The bacterial richness followed an unexpected monotonic increase with elevation. Diatoms decreased monotonically, and macroinvertebrate richness showed a clear unimodal pattern with elevation. The unimodal richness pattern for macroinvertebrates was best explained by the mid-domain effect (r(2) = 0.72). The diatom richness was best explained by the variation in nutrient supply, and the increase in bacterial richness with elevation may be related to an increased carbon supply.Main conclusions We found contrasting patterns in elevational diversity among the three studied multi-trophic groups comprising unicellular and multicellular aquatic taxa. We also found that there may be fundamental differences in the mechanisms underlying these species diversity patterns.
Patterns of Tadpole β Diversity in Temperate Montane Streams

Abstract:Understanding the spatial variation and formation mechanism of biological diversity is a hot topic in ecological studies. Comparing with α diversity, β diversity is more accurate in reflecting community dynamics. During the past decades, β diversity studies usually focused on plants, mammals, and birds. Studies of amphibian β diversity in montane ecosystems, in particular, tadpoles, are still rare. In this study, Mount Emei, located in southwestern China, was selected as the study area. We explored the tadpole β diversity in 18 streams, based on a two-year survey (2018-2019). Our results indicated a high total β diversity in tadpole assemblages, which was determined by both turnover and nestedness processes, and the dominant component was turnover. Both the total β diversity and turnover component were significantly and positively correlated with geographical, elevational, and environmental distances, but no significant relationship was detected between these and the nestedness component. Moreover, the independent contributions of river width, current velocity, and chlorophyll α were larger than that of geographical and elevational distance. Overall, tadpole β diversity was determined by both spatial and environmental factors, while the contribution of environmental factors was larger. Future studies can focus on functional and phylogenetic structures, to better understand the tadpole assembly process.
Trait‐mediated Filtering Drives Contrasting Patterns of Species Richness and Functional Diversity Across Montane Bird Assemblages

Abstract:Aim Most studies of diversity changes along elevational gradients show a synchronous change in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity, such that all decline with elevation or show a mid-elevation peak. However, some studies show asynchronous changes, which challenge us to explain their assembly. Here we used functional trait variation and niche spacing to test the roles of environmental filtering and competition-driven niche separation in assembly and biodiversity patterns across an elevational gradient. Location Nanling Mountains, southern China. Taxon Birds (Timaliidae, Pycnonotidae and Sylviidae) Methods Breeding birds were surveyed in 2012-2017 from 300 to 1900 m ASL. We tested bird diversity pattern and community structure relevant to environmental filtering and limiting similarity by integrating functional traits and evolutionary distances, as well as vegetation heterogeneity. A null modelling approach tested specific trait variation and niche spacing in relation to habitat associations and niche segregation. Results Contrary to expectation, bird richness peaked at just below the highest site, and functional diversity declined significantly with elevation. Functional-phylogenetic distance metrics converged with increasing elevation, corresponding to strong environmental filtering and habitat change. For the spatial arrangement of specific traits, restricted dispersal ability, elevational range and clutch sizes were related to filtering effects, as indicated by trait convergence in clustered highland bird assemblages. Conversely, overdispersed lowland assemblages have evenly spaced trait values predicted by limiting similarity, including bill length, vertical stratum-use and flocking propensity. In addition, bird functional diversity was highly correlated with both vegetation productivity and tree height, which reinforces the role of filtering in structuring local bird assemblages. Main conclusions This study highlights how strong filtering can produce a counter-intuitive, contrasting pattern of changes between species richness and functional diversity. Fundamental assembly processes and species roles in ecosystems are predictable through examining key traits of life-history and foraging characteristics, and their associations with environmental variables.

Abstract:In the context of global warming, studying insect diversity in mountainous regions is crucial for predicting species distribution and guiding biodiversity conservation. To examine the patterns of ant diversity along elevational gradients, we conducted field surveys in the Qinling Mountains, a natural boundary between the warm temperate and subtropical zones in China. Ants were sampled from elevations ranging from 967 to 2029 m above sea level. We measured six functional traits related to diet, habitat preference, and foraging strategy of ants. Our study evaluated the influence of elevation on taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic diversity, as well as ant community assembly. Our findings revealed differences in species composition of ant communities along elevations, and ant diversity tended to decrease with increasing elevation. The functional traits of ant communities at low and high elevation were similar (larger body sizes, wider heads, longer scapes, bigger eyes, longer mandibles and longer hind legs), while ants at the middle elevation showed opposite traits. Stochastic processes influenced ant communities at low elevation, and environmental filters played a primary role in shaping communities at middle and high elevation. The results suggest challenges for specialist ant species in dispersing across elevations, and provide valuable insights into ant ecological adaptation and diversity conservation in the Qinling Mountains.

Abstract:The how and why of the spatial variation in biodiversity is one of the fundamental topics in biogeography research, but accurate insights require the incorporation of phylogenetic information. Here, to provide a better understanding of the origin and mechanism of biodiversity in montane ecosystems and thus support conservation planning, we explored the elevational patterns of phylogenetic diversity and structure of seed plants in the Gyirong Valley, the longest valley in China's central Himalayas. The observed patterns were related to climatic, historical, geographical, and disturbance-related factors, and the relative contributions of these factors in explaining them were assessed. Our results showed that phylogenetic diversity of seed plants in the central Himalayas were described by a strongly hump-shaped pattern, peaking at 2700 m around. The phylogenetic structure of the plants was characterized by overdispersion at lower elevations and clustering at higher elevations, reflecting the cooperation between interspecies competition and environmental filtering in community assembly. Among the examined environmental factors, climatic factors showed the highest explanatory power, suggesting environmental filtering was largely driven by climatic rather than other factors. In summary, our finding indicating that mild climate at lower elevations presumably encourage phylogenetic differentiation by promoting interspecies competition, whereas increasingly harsh climatic condition with elevation may lead to closer phylogenetic relatedness through environmental filtering. Overall, our findings improve our knowledge about the elevational gradient of biodiversity in the Himalayas, and highlight the need for intensified conservation efforts at middle elevations as well as greater scientific concern regarding the impact of climate change on the biodiversity.

Abstract:Abstract Altitudinal diversity of terrestrial plants has been widely studied, whereas little is known for the patterns of aquatic plants. Here, we used a standardised field dataset to quantify the altitudinal patterns in the diversity and structure of aquatic plant assemblages, as well as the relationships between diversity indices and environmental variables. Large‐scale field investigations were carried out in 128 sites ranging from 2,280 to 5,020 m above sea level across the southern part of Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau, China. In total, 102 species of aquatic plants were recorded, belonging to 67 genera, 31 families. Five taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional indices were calculated for each collection site. We firstly examined altitudinal patterns of these diversity indices, then quantified the variations of indices across water areas, water flow, and soil matrix, respectively. We also explored the relationships between diversity indices and environmental variables using redundancy and variance partitioning analysis, to detect the ecological variables that drove the diversity. The results showed that taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity of aquatic plants decreased with increasing altitude. Net relatedness index of aquatic plants showed a hump pattern along the altitude gradient, with a peak around 3,800 m above sea level. There was no obvious trend in the net functional relatedness index of aquatic plants with altitude. Annual mean temperature was the most important variable associated with the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional diversity. Water area and water flow were significantly associated with functional structure, but not phylogenetic structure. Soil matrix also correlated with aquatic plant diversity. A large‐scale altitudinal gradient can influence aquatic plant diversity. Environmental filtering and niche convergence might have played dominant roles in the increasing and decreasing stages of phylogenetic structure of aquatic plant assemblages, respectively, along the altitudinal gradient. Phylogenetic and functional structure of aquatic plant assemblages showed different patterns along the altitudinal gradient, and the environmental variables better explained the change of functional structure than did the phylogenetic variables. This is the first comprehensive study on the species, phylogeny, and function of aquatic plant assemblages along a large‐scale altitudinal gradient. We found an altitudinal decline in the diversity of aquatic plants and different patterns in the phylogenetic and functional structures of aquatic plant assemblages. These findings indicate that functional traits have high phenotypic plasticity and are more affected by environments than phylogenetic relationships which are mainly shaped by evolutionary processes.

Abstract:Aim Understanding the patterns and drivers of biodiversity across space and time is commonly based on species diversity, which may ignore species' functional role and evolutionary history and result in an incomplete understanding of community assembly. It is suggested that integrating species, functional, and phylogenetic diversity could provide a more holistic assessment of community assembly in natural ecosystems. This study aimed to explore the elevational patterns and environmental drivers of multiple facets of fish diversity and community structure in a subtropical river during the wet and dry seasons. Location The Chishui River basin, China. Methods We investigated the responses of fish species richness, functional richness, and phylogenetic diversity to elevation in different seasons. Moreover, we compared functional dispersion and mean pairwise distance with those obtained from null models to infer assembly mechanisms shaping community structure. Additionally, we examined the environmental drivers (e.g. water chemistry, temperature, and river size) of fish diversity and community structure. Results Fish species richness, functional richness, and phylogenetic diversity showed a negative relationship with elevation in the Chishui River basin. Fish communities tended to be on average functionally random but phylogenetically clustered. Furthermore, phylogenetic structure exhibited a decreasing pattern along the elevational gradient. Despite no significant seasonal changes for fish diversity (except for phylogenetic diversity), fish communities became more phylogenetically overdispersed and clustered at low and high elevations in the dry season. Additionally, the responses of fish diversity and community structure to environmental variables were not synchronous. Conclusions At the basin scale, environmental filtering was prevalent in shaping fish phylogenetic structure, whereas stochasticity was likely more important for functional structure. Moreover, the ecological mechanisms shaping individual fish communities switched from limiting similarity to environmental filtering as elevation increased, and the underlying forces at two ends of the elevational gradient became more prominent in the dry season.

Abstract:Mountainous regions are some of the most biologically diverse places on Earth and have exceptionally high rates of endemism. Global biodiversity studies indicate that mountain biodiversity is only partially controlled by global climate drivers and is primarily the result of topographic relief, which amplifies habitat complexity by generating temperature and precipitation gradients. However, climate and relief alone do not fully explain observed patterns of species richness in mountainous regions.Here, we investigate the plant diversity of the Hengduan Mountains of southwest China, the main biodiversity hotspot outside the tropics, to demonstrate that the generation of this hotspot goes beyond habitat complexity. We mapped species richness patterns for seed plants across the entire Hengduan region and compared them to geomorphic characteristics of the landscape calculated using standard methods of digital topographic (DEM) analysis, including elevation and local relief (5 km radius). As we hypothesized, there is a strong, positive correlation between local relief and species richness generally. We also find large spatial anomalies among different families that may be fingerprints of older geologic processes. We hypothesize that other drivers, such as glacier extent, tectonic faults, and river capture, may explain regions of exceptionally high (resp. low) species richness.To understand which geological events drove seed plant diversification in the Hengduan Mountains, we developed a generalized linear correlation model to determine the component of species richness explained by climate variables. We removed the component of species richness corresponding to contemporary climate and mapped the residuals to determine where climate underpredicts species richness. We correlated this spatial relationship to known geologic events, based on published thermochronological studies, fault displacement history, and glaciations. In particular, this allows the differentiation between diversification in response to late Quaternary climate change and older, tectono-geomorphic events. We examine patterns across different plant families (from lowland to alpine species) and observe similar adaptive patterns in response to landscape transience.

Abstract:The mechanisms underlying elevation patterns in species and phylogenetic diversity remain a central issue in ecology and are vital for effective biodiversity conservation in the mountains. Gongga Mountain, located in the southeastern Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, represents one of the longest elevational gradients (ca. 6,500 m, from ca. 1,000 to 7,556 m) in the world for studying species diversity patterns. However, the elevational gradient and conservation of plant species diversity and phylogenetic diversity in this mountain remain poorly studied. Here, we compiled the elevational distributions of 2,667 native seed plant species occurring in Gongga Mountain, and estimated the species diversity, phylogenetic diversity, species density, and phylogenetic relatedness across ten elevation belts and five vegetation zones. The results indicated that species diversity and phylogenetic diversity of all seed plants showed a hump‐shaped pattern, peaking at 1,800–2,200 m. Species diversity was significantly correlated with phylogenetic diversity and species density. The floras in temperate coniferous broad‐leaved mixed forests, subalpine coniferous forests, and alpine shrublands and meadows were significantly phylogenetically clustered, whereas the floras in evergreen broad‐leaved forests had phylogenetically random structure. Both climate and human pressure had strong correlation with species diversity, phylogenetic diversity, and phylogenetic structure of seed plants. Our results suggest that the evergreen broad‐leaved forests and coniferous broad‐leaved mixed forests at low to mid elevations deserve more conservation efforts. This study improves our understanding on the elevational gradients of species and phylogenetic diversity and their determinants and provides support for improvement of seed plant conservation in Gongga Mountain.

Abstract:Understanding how species richness changes along altitudinal gradients and what mechanisms answer for those patterns has intrigued increasing attention from numerous researchers, however, there is still no consistent agreement on these questions. Here, based on available distribution records, we explored the elevational pattern of species richness for seed plants in the Mt. Namjagbarwa region (Eastern Himalayas, China), a previously unexplored region. Species richness in each 100 m elevation band was estimated by spatial interpolation method according to their recorded elevation range over a large altitudinal gradient from 700 to 5000 m. In each elevation band, species richness was related to several explanatory factors, including temperature, humidity, spatially related variables and biogeographical distributions. Regression analyses were performed to obtain a quantitative assessment of the relative contribution of each predictor to the empirical richness pattern. Overall, species richness along elevation showed a hump-shaped pattern, with a peak at 1600–2000 m. In all sub-groups (life form, biogeographical affinity, and range-size category), species richness showed unimodal patterns with increasing elevation generally, but with different peak positions. Regression models indicated species richness patterns are highly correlated with energy-related factor in most data sets, explaining the observed richness patterns, but also more or less associated with other variables (climatic variation, area, precipitation, and mid-domain effect). The water-energy dynamics model was found to explain the elevational species richness patterns. Meantime, there was an elevational coincidence between maximum species richness and floristic overlap index, which proving the role of the biotic process in shaping the species richness gradient. Our findings reconfirmed that the elevational richness gradient is influenced by many processes, including ecological factors and evolutionary history, and suggested the need to consider more factors in order to determine key mechanisms in future studies.

Abstract:How and why biodiversity varies along the elevational gradients is fundamental yet controversial topics in ecology. To advance our understanding on these questions and provide insight into biological conservation, we explore the elevational patterns of vascular plant richness and their drivers in the Gyirong Valley, the longest valley in China's Himalayas. Elevational richness patterns of vascular plant were documented by 96 sampling plots along 12 elevational bands of 300-m ranging from 1800 to 5400 m above sea level. We related the elevational patterns of vascular plant richness to the climate, spatial, historical, and disturbance factors, and assessed the relative importance of these factors in explaining above patterns using the Random Forest model. Overall, the species richness of vascular plant showed a hump-shaped pattern along the elevational gradient in the Gyirong Valley, although the life form and endemism of species in combination with the scale effect modified the patterns observed. Climate factors played a greater role than other environmental factors in explaining the elevational pattern of vascular plant richness. Such strong climate-species relationship was nicely interpreted by the water-energy dynamic hypothesis, indicating the combined effect of energy and water is the major driver that shaped vascular plant richness along elevational gradient. The climate-driven hump-shaped pattern of vascular plants in the Gyirong Valley is aligned with most of previous report from different part of the Himalayas, highlighting the need for more conservation effort at the intermediate elevations of this region, and calling for more scientific concern on the impact of climate change on elevational pattern of biodiversity.

Abstract:Biodiversity patterns and their underlying mechanisms have long been focal topics of study for ecologists and biogeographers. However, compared with spatial variation in species richness (α‐ and γ‐diversity), β‐diversity, or the dissimilarity of species composition between two or more sites has until recently received limited attention. In this study, we explored the large‐scale patterns of altitudinal turnover (β‐diversity) of plants in montane forests of China, based on systematic inventories of 1153 plots from 46 mountains distributed over ˜30 degrees of latitude (21.9–51.7°N) and ˜4100 m of altitude (160–4250 m). The β‐diversity of trees and shrubs declined significantly with increasing latitude. Along the altitudinal gradient, β‐diversity of both trees and shrubs showed non‐significant trends in most mountains. Differences in climate explained ˜30.0% of the variation in tree β‐diversity (27.7, 36.5, and 26.2% for the Jaccard's, βj, Sorenson's, βs, and Simpson's dissimilarity, βsim, respectively), with mean annual temperature being most important, and ≤ 10.0% of that in shrub β‐diversity (10.0, 8.2, and 7.0% for βj, βs, and βsim, respectively), with annual actual evapotranspiration and annual precipitation as the main predictors. However, climatic controls of β‐diversity varied dramatically in different biogeograpical regions. The β‐diversity of trees exhibited stronger, whereas that of shrubs showed weaker, climatic patterns in temperate and arid than subtropical regions. These results suggest that mechanisms causing patterns of β‐diversity may differ between latitudinal and altitudinal gradients, and among biogeographical regions; as a result, caution should be exercised in drawing close parallels between patterns and causes of β‐diversity along latitudinal and altitudinal gradients and among regions.
