Abstract:Emotions encompass cognitive and behavioural responses to reward and punishment. Using contests as a case-study, we propose that short-term emotions underpin animals' assessments, decision-making and behaviour. Equating contest assessments to emotional ‘appraisals', we describe how contestants appraise more than resource value and outcome probability. These appraisals elicit the cognition, drive and neurophysiology that governs aggressive behaviour. We discuss how recent contest outcomes induce long-term moods, which impact subsequent contest behaviour. Finally, we distinguish between integral (objectively relevant) and incidental (objectively irrelevant) emotions and moods (affective states). Unlike existing ecological models, our approach predicts that incidental events influence contest dynamics, and that contests become incidental influences themselves, potentially causing maladaptive decision-making. As affective states cross contexts, a more holistic ethology (incorporating emotions and moods) would illuminate animal cognition and behaviour.
Emotional Contagion and Social Support in Pigs with the Negative Stimulus

Abstract:This study expects to confirm the existence of emotional transmission in pigs from multiple perspectives and to provide theoretical references for improving animal welfare in livestock farming. A group that could directly observe (DO) and a group that could not directly observe (NO) were created based on whether or not their peers observed the treatment process, as the treated pig (TP) was treated with electrical shock and the companion pig (CP) either witnessed the treatment inflicted upon TP or not, and a third group was a control group, in which neither pig was stimulated. The behavioral responses of both the TPs and CPs were recorded to evaluate the emotional reaction. The results found that in both the DO and NO groups, the frequency of TP freezing was significantly higher than that of CP, and CP was significantly higher than that of the control group. Interestingly, although the social interaction responses of the CPs were not similar in the DO and NO groups, there were no significant differences between the behaviors of TPs in the DO and NO groups, except for nose–nose contact and a single approach to the partition, which allowed us to conclude that, whether or not the pigs directly observed the negative treatment, they were able to respond accordingly to fear and provide similar social support to their companions who were treated negatively.

Abstract:The emotional valence of animals is challenging to assess, despite being a key component of welfare. In this study, we attempted to assess emotional valence through memory in 1- and 3-week-old piglets. It was hypothesized that piglets would spend less time in a pen where they experienced a negative event (castration) and more time in a pen where they experienced a positive event (enrichment). A testing apparatus was designed with three equally sized pens: two outer sections serving as treatment pens containing unique visual and tactile cues and a center section remaining neutral. Piglets received either negative or positive condition in one outer treatment pen and a sham treatment in the opposite. Various methods were tested (age of piglets, number and length of conditioning sessions, passive vs. active conditioning). Contrary to expectations, piglets did not decrease their time in the pen associated with the negative condition or increase their time in the pen associated with the positive condition. However, when exposed to the positive condition, results indicate older piglets developed an aversion towards the sham treatment. This study provides methodological groundwork for the application of place conditioning in piglets and highlights the nuances important for the use of cognitive tests to assess animal welfare.

Abstract:We studied the epidemiology of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in women and neonates in the Jerusalem area. During the 6-month period from January to June 1982, we recorded the presence of antibody to CMV in pregnant and parturient Jewish and Arab women from West and East Jerusalem, respectively, in 18- to 22-year-old female students at a religious college, in female university students, in 18- to 22-year-old student nurses, and in the nursing staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in our hospital. In the 18- to 22-year-old age-group, the religious college students not working in a medical setting had the lowest rate of seropositivity. No difference in the rate of CMV infection was found between Jewish and Arab parturient women. In five cases of congenital CMV infection, representing different clinical aspects of the disease, a comparative study of diagnostic procedures for congenital CMV infection was performed.
Salivary Cortisol, but Not Oxytocin, Varies With Social Challenges in Domestic Pigs: Implications for Measuring Emotions

Abstract:Animals respond to inherently rewarding or punishing stimuli with changes in core affective states, which can be investigated with the aid of appropriate biomarkers. In this study we evaluate salivary cortisol (sCORT) and salivary oxytocin (sOXT) concentrations under baseline conditions and in response to two negatively- and two positively-valenced social challenges in 75 young pigs ( Sus scrofa domesticus ), housed and tested in eight social groups. We predicted that: (1) Relative to baseline, weaning and brief social isolation would be associated with increases in sCORT, due to psychosocial stress, and reductions in sOXT, due to a lack of opportunities for social support; and (2) Opportunities for social play, and reunions with group members after a separation would be associated with weaker sCORT responses, and increases in sOXT concentrations compared to baseline and to negative social challenges. Testing and sample collection occurred between 28 and 65 days of age and involved a within-subject design, in which every subject was sampled multiple times in neutral (baseline), negative and positive social contexts. We also recorded behavioral data and measured rates of agonism, play and affiliative interactions in the different contexts, prior to saliva sampling. As expected, negative social challenges were associated with robust cortisol responses. Relative to baseline, pigs also had higher sCORT responses to positive social challenges, although these differences were only significant during reunions. Salivary oxytocin concentrations did not differ between the different social conditions, although sOXT was lowest during the brief social isolation. Behavioral analyses confirmed predictions about the expected changes in social interactions in different social contexts, with increases in agonism following weaning, increases in coordinated locomotor play in the play context and high rates of affiliative interactions during reunions. Relative sCORT reactivity to different contexts may reflect the intensity of emotional responses, with greater increases occurring in response to challenges that involve more psychosocial stress. Our results suggest that sOXT is not a reliable indicator of emotional valence in pigs, although more research is needed to characterize sOXT responses to various challenges with and without access to social support.

Abstract:Judgement bias testing has emerged as a potential tool for assessing affective states in animals. Researchers infer an animal’s affective state based on an animal’s response to an ambiguous stimulus that is intermediate to both the rewarded and punished conditioned stimuli. Animals can be classified as “optimistic” or having a positive affective state if the animal displays behaviors that suggest an increased expectation of reward in the face of ambiguous stimuli. Alternatively, animals can be classified “pessimistic” or having a negative affective state if the animal displays behaviors that suggest an increased expectation of punishment in the face of ambiguous stimuli. Recent reports in multiple species question what factors influence performance in judgement bias testing, and which may allow for erroneous conclusions regarding individual affective state. In order to better understand this concern, 25 female swine were subjected to behavioral assessments at critical rearing stages to determine response variability. These same individuals were then assessed for physical measures of welfare and judgement bias using the “go/no-go” task as breeding adults. Sows which were more aggressive approached the ambiguous, but not the positive, stimulus significantly faster than others. Both optimistic and pessimistic biases were observed despite all sows living in enriched housing, and, sows with more positive physical welfare measures (fewer skin lesions and healthy body condition) did not exhibit more optimistic judgement biases. Our data demonstrate that behavior traits, such as aggressiveness , can affect a sow’s performance in a judgement bias test, while measures of physical health did not. We suggest that individual differences in behavior (e.g., bold-aggressive behavioral syndrome, or, proactive coping style) generate different emotional responses and can contribute to the animal’s overall affective state more so than physical ailment. Our findings highlight the complexity of how different factors impact an animal’s overall affective state and support the need for complementary measures in future JBT studies, including personality assessment.

Abstract:Third-party interference in agonistic contests entails a deliberate intervention in an ongoing fight by a bystanding individual (third party) and may be followed by post-conflict social behaviour to provide support to a specific individual. The mechanisms behind third-party intervention are, however, still largely understudied. The aim of this study was to investigate third-party interference, with the predictions that (1) the interferer derives benefits from its action by winning a fight, (2) that patterns of intervention depend on familiarity, (3) that dyadic fights last longer than triadic fights, and (4) that interferers engage in non-agonistic social behaviours afterwards. Pre-pubertal pigs ( Sus scrofa ) (n = 384) were grouped with one familiar and four unfamiliar conspecifics (all non-kin) to elicit contests for dominance rank. Third-party interference was analysed for the first 30 min after grouping, along with the behaviour (nosing or aggression), contest duration, contest outcome, and interferer behaviour after the fight (post-conflict social behaviour).

Abstract:1. Chronically implanted microwires were used to record extracellular field potentials generated in the c1 and c3 zones in the cortex of lobules V and VI of the cerebellum by non‐noxious stimuli delivered to the superficial radial nerve in the ipsilateral forelimb. Responses due to input via climbing fibre afferents were studied; their latency and other characteristics identified them as mediated mainly via the dorsal funiculus spino‐olivocerebellar path (DF‐SOCP). 2. Responses at individual sites were studied repeatedly with a range of stimulus intensities and during two different behaviours: quiet rest and steady walking on an exercise belt. For responses during walking, step histograms were constructed showing response mean size during different tenths of the step cycle in the ipsilateral forelimb, both in absolute terms and relative to mean size during rest. 3. Step histograms for the same site on different days or different stimulus intensities varied appreciably in form but in both cases the timing of the largest response was usually the same or shifted by only one step tenth. 4. In both zones the largest responses during walking occurred overwhelmingly during the E1 step phase when the limb is extended forwards and down to establish footfall. Least responses were much less uniform in timing but were mostly during stance, particularly its early (E2) part. 5. In many histograms the smallest responses were smaller in mean size than the responses during rest while the largest were larger. These changes were not paralleled by changes in nerve volley size, so presumably reflect step‐related central changes in pathway excitability. Facilitations and depressions were differently affected by stimulus intensity and sometimes occurred independently, suggesting generation by separate mechanisms. 6. In both zones there were differences between recording sites which suggests that different DF‐SOCP subcomponents innervate different parts of the zones. However, no systematic differences could be firmly established between the medial and lateral subzones of the c1 zone. 7. The results are discussed in relation to the hypothesis that the DF‐SOCP constitutes the afferent limb of a transcerebellar mechanism involved in adapting the evolving step.
The relationship between beliefs, attitudes and observed behaviours of abattoir personnel in the pig industry

Abstract:Previous research has indicated that frequent use of aversive pig handling techniques by stockpeople prior to slaughter, in particular the use of an electric prod, results in poorer welfare and reduced meat quality. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of attitudes in the prediction of behaviour of abattoir stockpeople. Twenty-four male employees at a large commercial piggery, working in the lairage area where pigs are slaughtered, participated in the study. Stockperson attitudes and personality were assessed using self-report questionnaires, and behaviour was assessed directly with the use of trained observers. A key finding of this study was that positive attitudes, both general and behavioural, were associated with use of an electric prod with the power turned off (NPROD) while negative attitudes were associated with use of the prod with the power on (PROD). This suggests that NPROD is actually intended to be a benign interaction by the stockperson when there is a need to move a pig but the stockperson wishes to avoid aversive interactions. On the other hand, PRODs can be interpreted as intended negative interactions. It was concluded that a simplified model based on Ajzen’s theory of planned behaviour applies in this situation because neither perceived control nor normative beliefs moderate the relationship between attitudes and behaviour in this context. The investigation of the role of personality factors in predicting abattoir stockperson behaviour yielded one significant factor: tough-mindedness. If it can be shown that modifying stockperson attitudes and behaviour leads to improved meat quality, then there is an opportunity to develop training programs to improve stockperson attitudes and behaviour in abattoirs, with subsequent improved pig welfare and meat quality.

Abstract:In recent years, an increased number of studies have dealt with the analysis of social dominance related to animal behavior, physiology, and performance. This study aimed to investigate whether hierarchical ranking affects the coping style, non-social behavior during open field and novel object tests, performance, and physiological parameters of pigs. A total of 48 growing pigs (24 barrows and 24 females) were mixed three times during the growing–finishing period. The social and non-social behaviors of pigs were directly noted, and three behavioral tests were performed during the experimental period. Performance and physiological parameters were also recorded. Statistical analysis considered hierarchical classification (dominant vs. intermediary vs. subordinate) and p-values ≤ 0.05 were considered significant. After three regroupings, the pigs in different hierarchical classifications showed no change in hair cortisol values and open-field and novel object tests. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and leukocyte values increased in intermediary pigs, and the lowest counts were found in pigs classified as dominants. Furthermore, dominant pigs visited the feeder more but spent shorter time there compared to subordinate and intermediary pigs. Our results suggest that hierarchical classification influenced feeding behavior and physiological parameters without affecting cortisol values and growth performance, demonstrating a possible compensation skill.

Effects of preferential social associations on pigs' response to weaning

Abstract:Farm animals can form preferential associations within their social group. Research has shown that the presence of familiar conspecifics can help to cope with stressful situations. Nonetheless, whether the strength of the relationship matters is largely unknown. Our aim was to investigate the influence of the strength of the social relationship between familiar partners during a stressful event. Pigs (n = 116) were observed pre-weaning for their social interactions and spatial proximity with littermates. From this, preferential associations were calculated based on sociality indices of non-agonistic social behaviours (SIsoc) and spatial proximity (SIprox). Pigs were weaned into groups of unfamiliar pigs together with one littermate. The partner was selected based on the strength of their relationship pre-weaning, with pairs from across the SIsoc and SIprox distribution. SIprox and non-agonistic social behaviour (SIsoc) were included in the statistical analysis as measures of relationship strength. Focal pigs were observed postweaning for their social behaviour and spatial proximity, skin lesions and growth, and salivary cortisol concentration pre-weaning and at 4 h and 48 h postweaning. The strength of the social relationship pre-weaning did not significantly influence the behaviour or proximity towards the familiar partner postweaning, or the amount of skin lesions or weight gain. Pigs who were weaned with a littermate with whom they were strongly affiliated based on active social behaviour (SIsoc) tended to have a lower proportional increase in their cortisol concentration after weaning (P = 0.07). Pigs differed in their behaviour towards the familiar partner as compared to the unfamiliar pigs, by directing more aggression towards unfamiliar pigs (P < 0.001), and more non-agonistic social behaviours towards the familiar pig (P < 0.001). The familiar partner was on average in 12.2% of the observations the nearest neighbour, which in small groups did not differ from random choice while in large groups, this occurrence was higher than expected by chance. The results show that pigs clearly distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar pigs, but that the strength of the relationship with a familiar partner seems to have limited effects at weaning. Although preferential associations in young pigs seem weak, studies on older pigs are needed to investigate whether this is due to the relatively little time they have to establish social preferences prior to weaning.
Genetic validation of postmixing skin injuries in pigs as an indicator of aggressiveness and the relationship with injuries under more stable social conditions

Abstract:The objective of the study was to estimate genetic correlations between skin lesions and aggressive behavior postmixing and under more stable social conditions as a potential means of selecting against pig aggressiveness. Postmixing aggression in commercial pig production is common, compromises welfare and profitability, and cannot be significantly reduced by low-cost changes to the environment. A genetic component to individual aggressiveness has been described in pigs and other species. Selective breeding against aggressiveness ought to be possible if an easily measured indicator trait can be shown to be genetically associated with aggressive behavior. Aggressive behavior was recorded continuously for 24 h after mixing, and a count of skin lesions (lesion count, LC) was recorded at 24 h and 3 wk postmixing on 1,663 pigs. Two behavioral traits were found to have a moderate to high heritability similar to that of growth traits; duration of involvement in reciprocal fighting (0.43 +/- 0.04) and delivery of nonreciprocal aggression (NRA; 0.31 +/- 0.04), whereas receipt of NRA had a lower heritability (0.08 +/- 0.03). Genetic correlations (r(g)) suggested that lesions to the anterior region of the body 24 h after mixing were associated with reciprocal fighting (r(g) = 0.67 +/- 0.04), receipt of NRA (r(g) = 0.70 +/- 0.11), and to a lesser extent, delivery of NRA (r(g) = 0.31 +/- 0.06). Lesions to the center and rear were primarily genetically associated with receipt of NRA (r(g) = 0.80 +/- 0.05, 0.79 +/- 0.05). Genetic correlations indicated that pigs that engaged in reciprocal fighting delivered NRA to other animals (r(g) = 0.84 +/- 0.04) but were less likely to receive NRA themselves (r(g) = -0.41 +/- 0.14). A genetic merit index using lesions to the anterior region as one trait and those to the center or rear or both as a second trait should allow selection against animals involved in reciprocal fighting and the delivery of NRA. Positive correlations between LC 24 h and 3 wk after mixing were found, especially for lesions to the center and rear of the body, indicating that postmixing lesions are predictive of those received under more stable group conditions. As well as reducing immediate aggression at mixing, selection on postmixing LC is expected to have a long-term impact on injuries from aggression, even after dominance relationships are established.

Abstract:Reducing harmful aggressive behaviour remains a major challenge in pig production. Social network analysis (SNA) showed the potential in providing novel behavioural traits that describe the direct and indirect role of individual pigs in pen-level aggression. Our objectives were to (1) estimate the genetic parameters of these SNA traits, and (2) quantify the genetic associations between the SNA traits and commonly used performance measures: growth, feed intake, feed efficiency, and carcass traits. The animals were video recorded for 24 h post-mixing. The observed fighting behaviour of each animal was used as input for the SNA. A Bayesian approach was performed to estimate the genetic parameters of SNA traits and their association with the performance traits. The heritability estimates for all SNA traits ranged from 0.01 to 0.35. The genetic correlations between SNA and performance traits were non-significant, except for weighted degree with hot carcass weight, and for both betweenness and closeness centrality with test daily gain, final body weight, and hot carcass weight. Our results suggest that SNA traits are amenable for selective breeding. Integrating these traits with other behaviour and performance traits may potentially help in building up future strategies for simultaneously improving welfare and performance in commercial pig farms.

Experience influences aggressive behaviour in the Argentine ant

Abstract:All animals interact with conspecifics during their life, and nearly all also display some form of aggression. An enduring challenge, however, is to understand how the experiences of an individual animal influence its later behaviours. Several studies have shown that prior winning experience increases the probability of initiating fights in later encounters. Using behavioural assays in the laboratory, we provide evidence that, in Argentine ants (Linepithema humile), the mere exposure to an opponent, without the encounter escalating to a fight, also increases the probability that it will display aggression in later encounters. Argentine ant workers differ in their propensity to attack non-colonymates, with some ants repeatedly aggressive and others consistently more docile. Although 78 per cent of the workers were consistent in their behaviour from one encounter to the next, workers that did change their behaviour after an encounter with a non-colonymate more often changed from non-aggressive to aggressive, rather than the reverse. Surprisingly, a single encounter with a non-colonymate increased a worker's propensity to fight in encounters up to a week later. An encounter with a non-colonymate also increased the probability that a worker would attack ants from a colony that it had not previously encountered. Thus, these interactions lowered the overall aggression threshold, rather than stimulating a specific aggressive response to a particular foreign colony. Finally, our data suggest that aggression towards non-colonymates increases with age.

Abstract:Fattening of intact boars is the least invasive alternative to the detrimental welfare effects of surgical castration of piglets. However, beside problems such as boar taint the divergent agonistic and sexual behaviour of boars may impair the pigs’ welfare during fattening. To evaluate the effect of sex on agonistic interactions a total of 108 female, 108 castrated male and 108 entire male German crossbred pigs with an initial average body weight of 25kg were kept in nine pens during three replicates with 12 pigs per pen respectively (1.2 m2 per pig) separated by sex. Pigs were slaughthered at about 115kg body weight. Agonistic behaviour was recorded 24h before and 24h after, and skin lesion scores (from 0 to 3) were recorded four days before and three days after half of the pigs have been removed in each pen for slaugthering. In addition, the daily activity pattern of groups was examined by a motion sensor system during 72h before removing half of the pigs of a group. The frequency of mounting, knocking and fighting was significantly higher in entire males both before and after removing half of the pigs from groups. Disturbance of social structure by removing half of the pigs per group did not affect the total number of agonistic interactions in any sex. Entire males showed a higher incidence of skin lesions at the neck and the ham before, and at the shoulder after half of the pigs were removed for slaughtering. However, the severest lesion score 3 was not found in any group and for score 2 the highest incidence of 3.7% was found at the shoulder of entire males after removing half of the pigs per group. The activity pattern of the pigs was not affected by sex. It was concluded that under housing conditions used in the present study (ad libitum feeding and low stocking density) fattening of entire male pigs can be done without severe detrimental effects on their welfare.

Abstract:Positive human–animal interactions (HAIs) can be intrinsically rewarding and facilitate positive human–animal relationships. However, HAI paradigms vary across studies, and the influence of different interaction paradigms on the animal's response has been overlooked. We compared the behavioural responses of pigs ( n = 28) individually tested with two types of gentle tactile interactions with a familiar human: 'free form (FF)' where the pig could voluntarily approach and interact as they normally would, and 'imposed contact (IC)' where the human imposed tactile contact on the pig according to a standardised protocol. Pigs did not differ in their level of engagement with the human between the two types of interactions. However, they differed in their behaviour as they explored the pen more during the FF test, while they emitted more low-pitched vocalisations (grunts) during the IC test. These differences can likely be imputed to the IC test differing to the pigs' habituation to human contact, which could have evoked greater attention to the human or triggered frustration due to violation of expectation. These findings highlight the influence of the predictability of the interaction or level of agency provided to the animal in HAI tests and relation to their previous experience of interacting.

Abstract:Animal welfare in pig production is frequently a topic of debate and is sensitive in nature. This debate is partly due to differences in values, forms, convictions, interests and knowledge among the stakeholders that constitute differences among their frames of reference with respect to pigs and their welfare. Differences in frames of reference by stakeholder groups are studied widely, but not specifically with respect to animal behaviour or welfare. We explored this phenomenon using a qualitative behaviour assessment (QBA). Participating stakeholders were classified into two expert groups consisting of pig farmers (N = 11) and animal scientists (N = 18) and a lay-group consisting of urban citizens (N = 15). The stakeholders were asked to observe the behaviour of a specific pig in each of the nine videos and to assign a score for each video using 21 predefined terms describing the mood, such as ‘happy’ or ‘irritated’. They were asked to complete two additional questionnaires to obtain information on their frames of reference. Results from the QBA showed that the pig farmers observed the behaviour of pigs more positively than the urban citizens and the animal scientists. This was evident from the consistently higher scores on the positive terms to assess pig behaviour. The questionnaires revealed that the farmers had a different frames of reference regarding pigs and different understanding of welfare, which might explain the differences in assessment. In a follow-up stakeholder workshop, which focussed on differences in observation, QBA showed to be an effective tool to stimulate mutual learning among stakeholders, which is necessary to find shared solutions.

Abstract:Abstract Vocal expression of emotions has been observed across species and could provide a non-invasive and reliable means to assess animal emotions. We investigated if pig vocal indicators of emotions revealed in previous studies are valid across call types and contexts, and could potentially be used to develop an automated emotion monitoring tool. We performed an analysis of an extensive and unique dataset of low (LF) and high frequency (HF) calls emitted by pigs across numerous commercial contexts from birth to slaughter (7414 calls from 411 pigs). Our results revealed that the valence attributed to the contexts of production (positive versus negative) affected all investigated parameters in both LF and HF. Similarly, the context category affected all parameters. We then tested two different automated methods for call classification; a neural network revealed much higher classification accuracy compared to a permuted discriminant function analysis (pDFA), both for the valence (neural network: 91.5%; pDFA analysis weighted average across LF and HF (cross-classified): 61.7% with a chance level at 50.5%) and context (neural network: 81.5%; pDFA analysis weighted average across LF and HF (cross-classified): 19.4% with a chance level at 14.3%). These results suggest that an automated recognition system can be developed to monitor pig welfare on-farm.

Abstract:Mixing, a common management strategy used to regroup pigs, has been reported to impair individual performance and affect pig welfare because of the establishment of a new social hierarchy after regrouping. In this study we aimed to determine whether mixing management (non-mixed vs. mixed) and gender (gilts vs. barrows) affect the social and non-social behavior, performance, and physiological parameters of pigs. A total of 96 growing pigs (48 barrows and 48 females) were separated into two treatments: control (CT)-pigs that were mixed once during the growing-finishing period; and social stress (SS)-pigs that were mixed thrice during the growing-finishing period. We recorded social and non-social behaviors, injury score, performance, and physiological parameters during the experimental period. Data were grouped by the period, based on each mix performed, and overall values. The statistical analysis performed considered gender and treatment. For treatment, during period-II and III, the SS group presented the highest frequency of agonistic interactions (AI), stayed longer lying laterally (LL) and sternly (LS), and explored more enrichment material (ER) than the CT group. Furthermore, SS pigs presented the highest injury score in the ear, head, and middle and posterior regions. Compared to the females, the barrows spent more time at the electronic feed station and initiated most of the agonistic interactions during period-II, and they presented a higher injury score for the ear and head regions during period-III. In conclusion, repeated regrouping significantly affected social and feeding behavior without severely altering performance and physiological parameters. Furthermore, different patterns of social and feeding behavior, agonistic interactions, and injury scores between barrows and females were observed. This study provides an understanding of the impact of mixing management and gender differences on pigs, and this knowledge can be used to improve swine productivity and welfare.
