Abstract:Objective: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, especially with high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) genotypes, is closely associated with cervical cancer. This study aimed to observe the epidemiological characteristics of HPV infection among healthy women in Beijing, China. Materials and Methods: Cervical specimens were collected from 29,436 healthy women, who underwent health check-ups in Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 2016 and 2019. A commercial kit was used for the detection of 15 HR-HPV and two low-risk HPV (LR-HPV) genotypes. Results: A total of 3586 (12.18%) participants tested positive for HPV, 3467 of which were infected with HR-HPVs. The most prevalent genotypes were HPV52, 58, 16, 51, and 56. Moreover, while infection with a single genotype (9.84%) was more prevalent, HPV16+52 was the most common combination in those infected with multiple HPVs. Furthermore, the highest infection rate among age groups was in women aged <25 years (20.92%). No significant difference in the prevalence was observed from 2016 to 2019. However, HPV incidence in Beijing was significantly different than that in all other areas in China, except for Zhengzhou (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings could serve as potential reference for better understanding of the epidemiological characteristics of HPV infection in Beijing.

Abstract:Introduction: Cervical cancer is the most common female cancer in large areas of the developing world, and almost half of these cases (54%) arises in Asia, where cervical cancer is still threatening women’s health and survival, which makes it a considerable public problem. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most powerful human carcinogens. Today, it has been proven that all cervical cancers and primary precancerous lesions are caused by carcinogenic types of HPV infections. HPV genotyping can therefore evaluate the screening programs. Methods: Five hundred fifty women referring to the gynecological centers were subjected to Pap smear cell samples. The cytopathological diagnosis of obtained cervical samples was based on the Bethesda system. HPV genotyping was carried out using the INNO-LiPA HPV Genotyping Extra II Amp assay. Results: In a total of 244 HPV positive cases, single‐type HPV infection was observed in 49.6%, while multi‐type HPV infections (including ≥ 2 types) were found in 45.5% of cases. Among the 110 cases with abnormal cytology results, going-over analyses led to the identification of atypical squamous cell of unknown significance (ASCUS) in 73 cases, low‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSIL) in 24 cases, and high‐grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) in 12 cases. In these groups, the infection rate of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) was 89%, 82%, and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: In this study, the total population of women suffering from different cervical lesions and malignancy was found to be infected with various HPV genotypes. High prevalence of HPV- 53 and HPV- 16 detected among participants with normal cytology can be considered as a tip-off development of cervical cancer among Iranian women.

Abstract:Abstract Background Human papilloma virus (HPV) causes the most common sexually-transmitted infection especially among sexually-active individuals. The aim of study was to characterize the molecular characterization of HPV genotypes between 5176 female and male patients. Methods HPV DNA was extracted from genital swabs of the study participants and amplified by Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Genotyping was performed for 2525 cases using REALQUALITY RQ-Multi HPV Detection Kit for the identification of 14 high risk (HR) and 2 low risk (LR) HPV genotypes. Demographic figures were analyzed in correlation with virological data statistically. Results Out of 5176 cases from 7 laboratories, 2727 (53%) were positive for HPV, of which. 2372(87%) women and 355 (13%) men were HPV positive. However, in an intra-gender analysis, positive rate was higher in men (355/637, 55.7%) than in women (2372/4539, 52%; P value 0.007). HPV positive patients were younger than negative individuals. Positive rate was higher among age categories 20–40. Genotyping was performed for 2525 cases. Out of 1219 (48%) patients who contained single genotypes, 566 (22%) and 653 (26%) harboured HR and LR genotypes, respectively. In females and males, 1189 (54%) and 117 (37%) contained multiple genotypes. No substantial associations were found between different age categories and HR/LR and multiple genotypes distribution. Conclusion The prevalence of HPV infection in both genders was high. However, men had a higher rate of infection. These observations highlighted the necessity for a plan for targeted education to younger population in the society as well as application of infection control measures against HPV infection, especially in terms of general population mass HPV vaccination.

Abstract:Background: Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, and human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination are important in the incidence of cervical cancer. Methods: This study was performed on Liquid Base Cytology (LBC) samples of 1214 women in Mashhad who were referred for cervical cancer screening in 2015-2020. Samples were examined by Single-Step PCR and Reverse Line Blot for HPV genotyping. Results: 386 women (31.8%) were HPV PCR positive. HPV genotyping of 277 samples showed that HPV 31 (3%), 16 (2.5%), 51 (2.2%), 18 (2%), and 66 (1.8%) were the most prevalent high-risk HPV (hrHPV) genotypes. Among low-risk HPV (lrHPV) genotypes, HPV 6 (9.2%), 53 (4.7%), and 42 (2.8%) were the most common genotypes. The range of multiple infections varied between two to eight genotypes and the prevalence of multiple HPV infections (12.4%) was higher than single infections (10.4%). For women with single HPV infections, HPV 31 and 66 were equally the most common hrHPV genotypes, followed by HPV 16 and 39. In women with multiple HPV infections, HPV 31 was the most common hrHPV genotype, followed by HPV 51 and 16. For both the single and multiple HPV infections, HPV 6 was the most common lrHPV genotype, followed by HPV 53 and 42. Conclusion: In conclusion, due to the high prevalence of HPV single and multiple infections, the need for governmentally supported HPV vaccination and through cervical cancer screening should be emphasized to prevent cervical cancer.

Abstract:A balanced, series-fed microstrip array antenna having 8 elements is investigated. The transmission line which feeds the elements is located below the elements plane. It is shown that the bandwidth of the antenna is 10% for SWR = 2, and that the average sidelobe level is -19 dB. The gain varies between 6.2 to 11.8 dBi. Very low cross-polarization was achieved.

Abstract:Frequency of cervical cancer related to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has increased remarkably in less-developed countries. Hence, applying capable diagnostic methods is urgently needed, as is having a therapeutic strategy as an effective step for cervical cancer prevention. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of various multi-type HPV infection patterns and their possible rising incidence in women with genital infections. This descriptive study was conducted on women who attended referral clinical laboratories in Tehran for genital infections from January 2012 until December 2013. A total of 1387 archival cervical scraping and lesion specimens were collected from referred women. HPV genotyping was performed using approved HPV commercial diagnostic technologies with either INNO-LiPA HPV or Geno Array Test kits. HPV was positive in 563 cases (40.59%) with mean age of 32.35±9.96. Single, multiple HPV genotypes and untypable cases were detected in 398 (70.69%), 160 (28.42%) and 5 (0.89%) cases, respectively. Multiple HPV infections were detected in 92 (57.5%), 42 (26.2%), 17 (10.6%) and 9 (5.7%) cases as two, three, four and five or more genotypes, respectively. The prevalence of 32 HPV genotypes was determined one by one. Seventeen HPV genotypes were identified in 95.78% of all positive infections. Five dominant genotypes, HPV6, 16, 53, 11 and 31, were identified in a total of 52.35%of the HPV positive cases. In the present study, we were able to evaluate the rate of multiple HPV types in genital infections. Nevertheless, it is necessary to evaluate the role of the dominant HPV low-risk types and the new probably high-risk genotypes, such as HPV53, in the increasing incidences of genital infections.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims Knowing the regional variants of distinct human papillomavirus (HPV) types is valuable as it can be beneficial for studying their epidemiology, pathogenicity, and evolution. For this reason, the sequence variations of the E6 gene of HPV 52 were investigated among women with normal cervical cytology and premalignant/malignant cervical samples. Methods Sixty‐four HPV 52‐positive samples were analyzed using semi‐nested PCR and sequencing. Results Our findings showed that all samples belonged to lineage A (61%) or B (39%). Among samples that were infected with the A lineage, sublineages A1 and A2 were detected and sublineage A1 was dominant. No association was found between lineages and stage of disease ( p > 0.05). Conclusion Our results revealed that the A lineage, sublineage A1, and B lineage were common in Iranian women. Nevertheless, more studies with larger sample sizes are required to estimate the pathogenicity risk of HPV 52 lineages in Iranian women with cervical cancer.
Prevalence of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Infection and its Association With Pap Smear Findings Among Women Attending a Gynecology Clinic in Khorasan Razavi-Iran

Abstract:Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the most common sexual transmitted disease and Pap smears and HPV testing are crucial for early detection. Advancements in HPV testing improve accuracy, but optimal screening strategies are still debated. This cross-sectional study explores HPV genotypes and predictors of infection among Iranian women undergoing gynecological screening. Study Design: A retrospective cross-sectional study. Methods: Women undergoing their initial cervical screening enrolled in this study. Cervical cytology samples for Pap smear analysis were collected from women referred to the genetic laboratory of Academic Center for Education Culture and Research (ACECR), Khorasan Razavi, during gynecological visits, adhering to standardized liquid-based cytology protocols. These samples were obtained over a one-year period since January 2023. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 21.0, with a significance level set at P<0.05. Results: A total of 328 women enrolled in this study. The mean age of participants was 36±11 years and the overall HPV prevalence was 37.5% (n=123). Among HPV-positive women, nearly half (48.7%) had a single HPV genotype. Genotypes 6 (13%), 16 (12.3%), and 53 (6.7%) were the most prevalent types. Notably, high-risk HPV genotypes (16 and 18 among all) were identified in one-fourth of the study population. Women with endocervical/transformation zone cells had 25% higher odds of having HPV infection, and having mild, moderate, and severe inflammation increased the odds of having HPV infection by 14%, 11%, and 20%, respectively. Conclusion: The considerably high prevalence of HPV infection highlights the significance of HPV prevention programs in this population. Neither bacterial vaginosis nor candida infection showed a direct link to HPV positivity.

Abstract:Background and aims: Human papilloma virus (HPV) is the most common sexual transmitted infection worldwide among women and plays a key role in the development of genital cancers. Different studies in Iran, reported various prevalences and combining their results could be important for health policy makers. The aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence of HPV and its high risk genotypes among Iranian healthy women. Methods: Using national and international databases and excluding duplicates and irrelevant evidences followed by applying exclusion criteria and quality assessment, eligible articles were selected. Standard error of the prevalence was calculated based on binomial distribution. Random effects model was used because of the high heterogeneity among the results. Results: Of 14 studies entered into the systematic review, 24 evidences reported the HPV prevalence among 7655 healthy and non-cancerous women in different provinces of Iran. Total prevalence of HPV, 9.4% (95% CI: 6.8–12.02), HPV 16, 2.03% (95% CI: 1.3–2.8), HPV 18, 1.7% (95% CI: 0.9–2.5) and other genotypes of HPV, 5.3% (95% CI: 3.6–6.9) were estimated. Conclusion: Our meta- analysis showed that the total prevalence of HPV and its high- risk genotypes (16 and 18) among healthy non- cancerous Iranian women was very high.

Abstract:Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main etiological factor for cervical cancer and premalignant lesions of the cervix. The purposes of the present study were to determine the prevalence of type-specific HPV infections and the association of different HPV types with cervical dysplasia among women in Zhejiang province, Southeast China. Methods A total of 15,267 women presenting to a gynaecological outpatient clinic were enrolled in this study. Women were screened for HPV in addition to routine cervical cytology testing. Microarray hybridization and liquid-based cytology tests were used to detect HPV genotypes and cervical cytology, respectively. Results Based on the population attending a gynaecological outpatient clinic, overall prevalence of any 23 HPV type was 22.8% and multiple HPV infection was found in 4.0% of all the outpatients. HPV prevalence showed bimodal age distribution, with a peak (55.7%) at the ≤20 age group and a second one (35.5%) at >60 age group. In total samples, the five most frequent types were HPV 16 (4.4%), 58 (2.9%), 52 (2.7%), 33 (2.2%) and 11 (1.9%). Overall HPV prevalence increased with the severity of the cytologic result. Analysis through crude odds ratios (ORs) revealed that the cervical lesion risk of HPV-infected women increased to about 26-fold of uninfected women (OR 26.1, 95% CI 22.4 to 30.3). The five most risky HPV types associated with abnormal cytology were HPV 73, 16, 82, 45 and 51. Conclusions This study provided baseline data on HPV prevalence in women attending a gynecological outpatient clinic in Zhejiang province. Our data will supply guidance for the primary screening and vaccination program for cervical cancer in this area.

Abstract:Two patients with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder with superimposed depression, who had failed to respond to a wide variety of antidepressants, were treated with trazodone hydrochloride. Both seemed to obtain a rapid and impressive improvement in both their depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder while receiving trazodone. One patient subsequently had a monoamine oxidase inhibitor added to his treatment and experienced some additional improvement, but most of his improvement had occurred earlier, while he was receiving trazodone only.
Distribution of the most common types of HPV in Iranian women with and without cervical cancer

Abstract:Cervical cancer is an important cause of death in women worldwide. About 99.7% of all cervical cancers have been related to human papillomavirus, especially types 16 and 18. Types 6 and 11 cause genital warts. We aimed to determine the prevalence of common HPV genotypes among women in the general population and women with cervical cancer. A total of 571 healthy women cytology specimens and 113 tissue samples of cervical cancer were investigated using HPV type-specific primers. HPV DNA was detected in 24% of healthy women: 3.3% were positive for high-risk HPV and 11.6% for low-risk HPV. HPV6 (9.3%) had the highest prevalence followed by HPV11 (2.3%), HPV16 (1.8%), HPV18 (1.2%), and 9.1% of samples were positive for unknown types. Among cervical cancer samples, HPV DNA was found in 78.8% including 43.4% HPV16, 8% HPV18, and 27.4% an unknown HPV type. HPV6 and HPV11 were not detected in any cervical cancer cases and 21.2% were negative for HPV. We found no association between HPV-16/18 and age in cervical cancer. The prevalence of HPV infection is relatively high in Iran without vaccination backgrounds. HPV DNA screening and vaccination programs can prevent cervical cancer and health problems caused by genital warts.

Abstract:Introduction: High-risk human papillomaviruses (HR-HPVs) are known to contribute to cervical cancer (CC), but the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in this process remains unclear, despite EBV's widespread detection in premalignant and malignant cervical tissues. Methods: In this cross-sectional study of 258 cervical samples, including both formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) and fresh cervical tissues, the presence and viral load of HR-HPVs (HPV-16 and HPV-18) and EBV were evaluated in Iranian women with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and a cervicitis control group using real-time PCR. Results: The study revealed a significant correlation between disease severity and both increased HPV-16 positivity and HPV-16 and HPV-18 co-infection (p<0.001). Interestingly, the control group had a higher frequency of EBV-positive cases than SCC/CIN groups (p<0.001). HPV-16 DNA load increased with disease severity (P<0.001), while HPV-18 showed no significant difference (P=0.058). The control group had a higher EBV DNA load compared to SCC/CIN groups (P=0.033). HPV-16 increased the risk of CIN II, CIN III, and SCC, while HPV-18 increased the risk of CIN II and CIN III. Notably, EBV was associated with a lower risk of CIN groups and SCC. Conclusions: No significant difference in EBV co-infection with HPV-16/18 was found, failing to support the hypothesis that EBV is a cofactor in CC. However, high EBV viral load in the control group suggests a potential "hit and run hypothesis" role in CC progression. This hypothesis suggests that EBV may contribute briefly to the initiation of CC with an initial impact but then becomes less actively involved in its ongoing progression.

Abstract:Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection, especially among sexually active individuals. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of HPV infection among males and females in Southern Iran. Although previous studies have explored HPV prevalence in various provinces across Iran, this research is unique as the first to examine a four-type sample within this region. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved a sample of residents from Southern Iran, comprising 82 females (71.9%) and 32 males (28.1%), aged between 13 and 74 years, most of whom were sexually active. The main focus of the research was to investigate HPV infection across various anatomical sites in both healthy women and those with external genital warts (eGW). Results: The anatomical sites assessed included the oral, anal, vaginal, and urinary areas. Out of the total sample, 79 individuals (69.3%) tested positive for HPV. Within this group, 65 individuals (81.3%) were from the eGW group, while 14 individuals (41.2%) belonged to the normal population. A statistically significant difference (P ≤ 0.1) was observed in the prevalence of HPV in oral samples between the two groups. In the eGW group, 61 participants were positive for low-risk HPV (LR-HPV) genotypes, and 4 tested positive for HPV-18. Among the normal population, 14 individuals tested positive for LR-HPV genotypes. Notably, a higher proportion of positive HPV results—approximately 29%—was identified in anal and urinary samples compared to vaginal samples from females in the normal population. Conclusions: Significant differences in HPV prevalence were noted between individuals with eGW and those in the normal population. Overall, the prevalence of HPV among eGW individuals was approximately twice that of the normal population across the four anatomical sites. Further research is warranted to better understand the association between HPV infection, eGW, and various sociodemographic factors.

Abstract:There exists strong evidence that human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with cervical cancer (CC). HPV E6 is a major oncogene whose sequence variations may be associated with the development of CC. There is not sufficient data on the distribution of HPV types in ThinPrep cytology specimens and HPV 16/18 E6 gene variations among CC patients in the southwest of Iran. This study was conducted to contribute to HPV screening and vaccination in Iran.

Abstract:This study investigates the epidemiological characteristics of high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) and analyzes the risk of cervical lesions among women in Zhejiang province, China. HPV data were collected retrospectively from a cohort of 67 742 women who underwent routine cervical cancer screening from 2010 to 2019. Precancerous and cervical cancer cases (n = 980) were histologically diagnosed as a low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL; n = 341) or a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL; n = 499) and invasive cervical cancer (ICC) (n = 140) groups. Disordered logistic regression analysis was used to test the relationship between different degrees of cervical lesions, HPV16/18 infection status, positive rate of p16(INK4a) (p16), Ki-67 expression, and patient's age in SIL and ICC (270/980 cases) patients. HPV52 (4.7%) was the most prevalent HPV type, followed by HPV16 (3.3%) and HPV58 (2.6%). HPV16 was the most common HPV in SIL, peaking at the age of 30-39. The HPV16 infection rate was significantly higher in HSIL than in LSIL patients; moreover, HPV16, HPV18, and HPV51 infection rates were significantly higher in ICC patients than in HSIL (Bonferroni-adjusted p < 0.0167). The presence of HPV16/18 was also associated with a higher risk of developing HSIL from LSIL (odds ratio [OR] = 9.198, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.76-127.49). The increased p16 expression and HPV16/18 were associated with the increased risk of cancer progression (OR = 1.092, 95% CI: 1.03-1.36; OR = 1.495, 95% CI: 1.23-2.19, respectively). The identified hrHPV genotypes in cervical lesions can serve as a baseline indicator for future vaccine assessment in Zhejiang, China.
