Abstract:Water is the most important limiting factor of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) double cropping systems in the North China Plain (NCP). A two-year experiment with four irrigation levels based on crop growth stages was used to calibrate and validate RZWQM2, a hybrid model that combines the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM) and DSSAT4.0. The calibrated model was then used to investigate various irrigation strategies for high yield and water use efficiency (WUE) using weather data from 1961 to 1999. The model simulated soil moisture, crop yield, above-ground biomass and WUE in responses to irrigation schedules well, with root mean square errors (RMSEs) of 0.029cm3cm−3, 0.59Mgha−1, 2.05Mgha−1, and 0.19kgm−3, respectively, for wheat; and 0.027cm3cm−3, 0.71Mgha−1, 1.51Mgha−1 and 0.35kgm−3, respectively, for maize. WUE increased with the amount of irrigation applied during the dry growing season of 2001–2002, but was less sensitive to irrigation during the wet season of 2002–2003. Long-term simulation using weather data from 1961 to 1999 showed that initial soil water at planting was adequate (at 82% of crop available water) for wheat establishment due to the high rainfall during the previous maize season. Preseason irrigation for wheat commonly practiced by local farmers should be postponed to the most sensitive growth stage (stem extension) for higher yield and WUE in the area. Preseason irrigation for maize is needed in 40% of the years. With limited irrigation available (100, 150, 200, or 250mm per year), 80% of the water allocated to the critical wheat growth stages and 20% applied at maize planting achieved the highest WUE and the least water drainage overall for the two crops.

Quantifying climate and management effects on regional crop yield and nitrogen leaching in the north china plain

Abstract:Better water and nitrogen (N) management requires better understanding of soil water and N balances and their effects on crop yield under various climate and soil conditions. In this study, the calibrated Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM2) was used to assess crop yield and N leaching under current and alternative management practices in a double-cropped wheat ( L.) and maize ( L.) system under long-term weather conditions (1970-2009) for dominant soil types at 15 locations in the North China Plain. The results provided quantitative long-term variation of deep seepage and N leaching at these locations, which strengthened the existing qualitative knowledge for site-specific management of water and N. In general, the current management practices showed high residual soil N and N leaching in the region, with the amounts varying between crops and from location to location and from year to year. Seasonal rainfall explained 39 to 84% of the variability in N leaching (1970-2009) in maize across locations, while for wheat, its relationship with N leaching was significant ( < 0.01) only at five locations. When N and/or irrigation inputs were reduced to 40 to 80% of their current levels, N leaching generally responded more to N rate than to irrigation, while the reverse was true for crop yield at most locations. Matching N input with crop requirements under limited water conditions helped achieve lower N leaching without considerable soil N accumulation. Based on the long-term simulation results and water resources availability in the region, it is recommended to irrigate at 60 to 80% of the current water levels and fertilize only at 40 to 60% of the current N rate to minimizing N leaching without compromising crop yield.
Interactive effects of irrigation system and level on grain yield, crop water use, and greenhouse gas emissions of summer maize in North China Plain

Abstract:Irrigation management is one of most critical factors influencing soil N 2 O and CO 2 emissions in dryland agriculture. To explore the effects of irrigation systems and levels on the mitigation of N 2 O and CO 2 emissions from maize fields and to determine the balance among greenhouse gases (GHG) emission, water-saving and grain yield, a two–year field experiment was conducted in the North China Plain (NCP) during the growing seasons of 2018 and 2019. Two irrigation systems (i.e., flood irrigation, FI, and drip irrigation, DI) were adopted with four irrigation levels in each system, including 65 mm/event (sufficient irrigation, CK), 50 mm/event (decreased by 23 %), 35 mm/event (by 46 %) and 20 mm/event (by 69 %), respectively. The results showed that both irrigation systems and levels had significant effects on soil N 2 O and CO 2 emissions ( P < 0.05). Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and CO 2 emissions peaked following irrigation or irrigation + fertilization events during sowing to early filling stage (R1), with the peak values increasing with irrigation levels. Meanwhile, peak values from FI were higher than those from DI at 50 mm and 65 mm irrigation levels. The average cumulative N 2 O and CO 2 emissions of DI treatments were 14.9 % and 6.23 % lower than those of FI treatments ( P < 0.05), respectively. Soil moisture was identified as one of the most crucial factors influencing N 2 O and CO 2 fluxes. Deficit irrigation efficiently deceased cumulative N 2 O and CO 2 emissions, but moderate to severe deficit irrigation brought significant reduction in grain yield. Drip irrigation with a slight deficit irrigation level (decreased by 23 %) obtained the best economic and environmental benefits, which achieved the dual goal of lower GHG emissions but higher WUE without sacrificing grain yield.

Abstract:Inappropriate water and fertilizer management can lead to unstable crop yield, and excessive irrigation and fertilization can potentially cause soil degradation and groundwater pollution. A two-year field experiment was conducted on drip-fertigated spring maize (Zea mays L.) in Ningxia of northwest China to explore the effects of four irrigation amounts (I75: 0.75ETc, I90: 0.90ETc, I105: 1.05ETc and I120: 1.20ETc, where ETc is the crop evapotranspiration) and four N-P2O5-K2O fertilization rates (F60-30-30, F120-60-60, F180-90-90 and F240-120-120 in 2016; F150-70-70, F225-110-110, F300-150-150 and F375-180-180 in 2017) on maize growth, grain yield, grain nitrogen accumulation, economic benefit and soil nitrate residue (NO3-N). Considering the goal of conserving both water and fertilizer while maintaining relatively high yields and minimizing soil NO3-N, a management strategy to optimize irrigation and fertilization regimes was developed based on the response surface methodology. The results showed that irrigation amount and fertilization rate significantly affected leaf area index, aboveground biomass, grain yield and harvest index. The irrigation-fertilization interaction significantly affected plant and grain nitrogen accumulation. In 2016 with lower fertilization range, grain yield and grain nitrogen accumulation were highest under I120F240-120-120, reaching 14,440 kg ha-1 and 184.50 kg ha-1, respectively. In 2017 with higher fertilization range, both grain yield and grain nitrogen accumulation initially increased and then decreased with increasing irrigation and fertilization regimes. Grain yield and grain nitrogen accumulation were highest under I90F300-150-150, reaching 16,884 kg ha-1 and 195.09 kg ha-1, respectively. Although plant nitrogen uptake was dramatically higher under I90F375-180-180 than those in the other treatments, grain yield was markedly lower under I90F300-150-150 and nitrogen harvest index was also lower. Soil NO3−-N increased with increasing fertilization rate, but it decreased with increasing irrigation amount. When irrigation amount and fertilization rate increased at the same time, the soil NO3−-N accumulation area moved deeper in the soil profile. Soil NO3--N content and distribution in the 60−100 cm soil layer showed an increasing trend, but this trend was less obvious than that in the 0−60 cm soil layer. When the irrigation amount was 447−452 mm and the N-P2O5-K2O fertilization rate ranged from 290−145-145 to-303−152-152 kg ha-1, grain yield, grain nitrogen accumulation and economic benefit (≥13,688 CNY ha-1) can reach 95 % confidence interval of their maximum values simultaneously. This study can provide a theoretical basis for high-efficient water and fertilizer utilization in sustainable spring maize (Zea mays L.) production in northwest China.

Abstract:Human adipose‐derived stem cells (hASCs) are known for their capability to promote bone healing when applied to bone defects. For bone tissue regeneration, both sufficient angiogenesis and osteogenesis is desirable. Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) has the potential to promote differentiation of common progenitor cells to both lineages. To test this hypothesis, the effects of VEGFA on hASCs during osteogenic differentiation were tested in vitro. In addition, hASCs were seeded in murine critical‐sized calvarial defects locally treated with VEGFA. Our results suggest that VEGFA improves osteogenic differentiation in vitro as indicated by alkaline phosphatase activity, alizarin red staining, and quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction analysis. Moreover, local application of VEGFA to hASCs significantly improved healing of critical‐sized calvarial defects in vivo. This repair was accompanied by a striking enhancement of angiogenesis. Both paracrine and, to a lesser degree, cell‐autonomous effects of VEGFA‐treated hASCs were accountable for angiogenesis. These data were confirmed by using CD31−/CD45− mouse ASCsGFP+ cells. In summary, we demonstrated that VEGFA increased osteogenic differentiation of hASCS in vitro and in vivo, which was accompanied by an enhancement of angiogenesis. Additionally, we showed that during bone regeneration, the increase in angiogenesis of hASCs on treatment with VEGFA was attributable to both paracrine and cell‐autonomous effects. Thus, locally applied VEGFA might prove to be a valuable growth factor that can mediate both osteogenesis and angiogenesis of multipotent hASCs in the context of bone regeneration. Evaluating the Impact of Alternative Cropping Systems on Groundwater Consumption and Nitrate Leaching in the Piedmont Area of the North China Plain

Abstract:The overexploitation of groundwater and the excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer under the intensive double cropping system are responsible for the groundwater level decline and potential contamination in the North China Plain (NCP). Alternative cropping systems have the potential to alleviate current groundwater and N problems in the region, while there are limited studies simultaneously focusing on the impact of a change of cropping systems on crop yields, groundwater consumption, and N leaching. In this study, Field observed experiments of double-cropping system (i.e., winter wheat–summer maize) and mono-cropping system (early sowing maize) were used to calibrate and validate the Root Zone Water Quality Model (RZWQM2). Then, the validated RZWQM2 model was used to evaluate the long-term crop growth and environmental impact under the local winter wheat–summer maize rotation system with practical irrigation (WW-SM_pi) and auto-irrigation (WW-SM_ai), and three alternative cropping systems (single early maize, SEM; winter wheat–summer maize and single early maize, WW-SM-SEM; winter wheat-summer maize and double single early maize, WW-SM-2SEM). The net consumption of groundwater and N leaching under WW-SM_pi were 226.9 mm yr−1 and 79.7 kg ha−1 yr−1, respectively. Under the local rotation system, auto-irrigation could increase crop yields and N leaching. Compared with the WW-SM_ai, the alternative cropping systems, WW-SM-SEM, WW-SM-2SEM, and SEM, significantly decreased the net consumption of groundwater by 49.3%, 63.0%, and 97.8%, respectively (147.5–292.9 mm), and N leaching by 53.5%, 67.5%, and 89.6%, respectively (50.0–83.7 kg ha−1). However, the yields of the three alternative cropping systems were reduced by less than 30% (12.2%, 20.1%, and 29.7%, respectively). The simulated results indicated that appropriately decreasing the planting frequency of winter wheat is an effective approach to reduce groundwater overexploitation and N contamination with a relatively limited reduction in grain yields. The results could provide a scientific basis for cropping system adjustment in guaranteeing sustainable regional water and grain policy.
Coupling effects of irrigation and nitrogen on spring maize yield and greenhouse gas emissions in Northwestern China

Abstract:Background: This study explored the mechanism of irrigation and nitrogen (N) coupling on spring maize yield and soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with the objective of achieving water saving, high yield and emission reduction. Field experiments were conducted to analyze the effects of multiple irrigation and N management strategies on GHG emissions and to determine the optimal balance between GHG, water conservation and grain yield. The experiments were conducted on spring maize with three irrigation levels (low, IL; medium, IM; and high, IH) and 4 N application levels (N40, N80, N120 and N160 kg N ha-1). Results: The IL treatment exhibited the lowest N2O and CO2 emission fluxes and the lowest CH4 uptake fluxes. The N40 treatment exhibited the lowest N2O and CO2 emission fluxes and the highest CH4 uptake flux. Significant positive correlations were observed among N2O and CO2 emission fluxes, CH4 uptake fluxes, and soil moisture and inorganic N content. Maize yield initially increased and then decreased with rising levels of irrigation and N management. By employing the TOPSIS method to assess yield and greenhouse effects, we identified the IMN120 treatment as optimal given that this treatment achieved the highest yield (14 686.26 kg ha-1) and water use efficiency (3.51 kg m-3) while maintaining relatively low global warming potential (573.30 kg CO2 eq ∙ ha-1) and GHG intensity (0.0390 kg CO2 eq ∙ kg-1). Conclusion: Irrigation optimization and N management are key to reducing GHG emissions, enhancing yield, and promoting both the sustainable development of agriculture and environmental protection. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
Effects of climate factors on wheat and maize under different crop rotations and irrigation strategies in the North China Plain

Abstract:The North China Plain (NCP) is a crucial agricultural region for grain production in China, primarily focusing on wheat and maize cultivation. However, these crop yields are highly vulnerable to fluctuations in temperature and precipitation, with climate change being a significant factor. This study investigates the impact of climate factors on wheat and maize yields in the NCP under various crop rotations and water supply strategies. Using the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) crop mechanism model, we evaluated the effects of different crop rotations and water supply strategies on wheat and maize yields. A comprehensive analysis of the simulated results determined the yield variation trends and their correlation and sensitivity to different climate factors. The findings revealed that precipitation levels over the past 40 years showed no significant trend, while radiation levels showed a significant decreasing trend, and annual mean maximum and minimum temperatures displayed significant increasing trends. Furthermore, the study found that irrigation practices and crop rotations substantially impact grain yield in the study area, with average yields ranging from 8105.5 kg/ha under rainfed conditions to 13088.8 kg/ha under fully irrigated conditions. There was a statistically significant trend of increasing yields for fully irrigated Monocrop-Wheat and decreasing yields for fully irrigated Monocrop-Maize over the past 40 years. Sensitivity analysis also showed that rational rotation and irrigation can reduce grain yield sensitivity to climate change. In conclusion, the prudent use of rotation and irrigation can enhance food production resilience to climate change. These findings have significant implications for developing strategies to optimize crop yields and adapt to climate change in the NCP while considering trade-offs.

Abstract:Drought, water, and nitrogen (N) losses have always been great challenges for agricultural production in subtropical regions of China. To study appropriate irrigation regimes and reasonable N applications, a field experiment was conducted for summer maize (Zea mays L.) from 2018 to 2019. Two irrigation treatments, namely, rain-fed irrigation and supplementary irrigation, were designed, and five levels of N fertilizer were applied. The differences in the growth periods of biomass, leaf area index, agronomic traits, carbon accumulation, and carbon metabolism enzyme activity were measured. Findings revealed that the interaction of water and N has a significant impact on maize growth. Compared to other N treatments, N250 produced significantly higher biomass, leaf area index, agronomic traits, carbon accumulation, and carbon metabolism enzyme activity. In 2018, the agronomic traits and leaf area index were significantly higher than in 2019. Meanwhile, additional irrigation could help improve agronomic traits and the leaf area index. Further correlation analysis revealed that carbon accumulation was positively correlated with carbon metabolism enzyme activity, although lower at maturity than in the flowering period. Overall, the findings suggest that supplementary irrigation in conjunction with N250 treatment is a worthwhile measure for sustainable maize production in subtropical regions of China.

Abstract:Winter wheat production in the North China Plain (NCP) relies mainly on irrigation. To assess the effect irrigation management practices on crop production, the HYDRUS-1D model was modified by incorporating the crop growth module adopted from the EPIC model. The modified HYDRUS-1D model was calibrated and validated by using data collected from 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 winter wheat growing seasons in Beijing area. The predicted values for soil water content, soil nitrate concentration, crop growth, yield, and evapotranspiration showed good agreements with the measured values. The calibrated model was then used to evaluate the yield and water use efficiency (WUE) under different hydrologic years. The WUE for different irrigation depth was considered as the criterion for investigating the appropriate irrigation management practices. Results showed that the appropriate irrigation depth per application could be determined as 62.5% of the difference between 20 cmpan evaporation and precipitation for hydrologic years with 75%, 50% and 25% probability of rainfall occurrence, respectively, under the recommended nitrogen application rate in Beijing area. And the corresponding total irrigation amount was 244.7, 213.8 and 192.5 mm. The results of this study provide scientific implications for water management of winter wheat under sprinkler irrigation in the NCP and those areas with similar climatic and cropping practice conditions. Effects of supplemental irrigation on grain yield and water and nitrogen efficiencies of winter wheat in the North China Plain

Abstract:Background: Aiming at unbalanced coordination of irrigation and fertilization of winter wheat in the eastern North China Plain, this study investigated the effect of fertigation on wheat grain yield, grain quality, and water use efficiency (WUE) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in seven irrigation and nitrogen (N) fertilization treatments. Under the field conditions, the traditional irrigation and fertilization method (total N amount of 240 kg ha-1 , application of 90 kg ha-1 at sowing irrigation at jointing and anthesis, with topdressing N of 150 kg ha-1 at jointing) was used as the control (CK). There were six fertigation treatments to compare with CK. For the fertigation treatments, the total amount of N application was set to 180 kg ha-1 and 90 kg ha-1 was applied at sowing and the remaining N fertilizer was applied through fertigation. The fertigation treatments included the combination of three fertigation frequencies (S2: at jointing and anthesis; S3: at jointing, anthesis, and filling; S4: at jointing, booting, anthesis, and filling) and two soil water replenishment depths (M1: 0-10 cm; M2: 0-20 cm). The six treatments were S4M2, S4M1, S3M2, S3M1, S2M2, and S2M1. Result: Compared with CK, three and four irrigations (S3 and S4) maintained higher soil and plant analyzer development value and photosynthetic rate after anthesis. These treatments increased soil water extraction while reducing crop water consumption during the whole growing season, promoted the assimilation and translocation of dry matter into the grain after anthesis, and increased the 1000-grain weight. These fertigation treatments also significantly increased WUE and NUE. At the same time, the high grain protein content and grain protein yield were maintained. Compared with the CK, high wheat yield was maintained by S3M1 (drip irrigation fertilizer at the jointing, anthesis, and filling, and the depth of the moisture replenishment is 10 cm). This fertigation treatment significantly increased yield by 7.6%, WUE by 30%, NUE by 41.4%, and partial factor productivity from applied N by 25.8%; grain yield, grain protein content, and grain protein yield also performed well. Conclusion: Consequently, S3M1 treatment was suggested to be a good practice for reducing irrigation water and N input in the eastern North China Plain. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Achieving high crop yield with less irrigation is important to improve water productivity (WP) and irrigation water productivity (IWP) in water-limited regions in the North China Plain (NCP). Coupling the impacts of precipitation and irrigation on the crop yield is, therefore, an essential tool for understanding crop response to different water sources and forecasting irrigation water requirements. In this study, the CERES-Wheat model was used to simulate winter wheat yield, WP, and IWP under different irrigation schedules (no, deficit, full, and automatic irrigation) and three precipitation category years (wet, normal, and dry years). Results showed that the amount of precipitation fluctuated significantly over site-years, leading to considerably varied irrigation water requirements. For the wet year, deficit two irrigations at greening and jointing stages (treatment 11) alleviated water stress during key winter wheat growth periods, contributing to increasing biomass, yield, WP, and IWP. However, when reducing the irrigation amount by 50%, a significant increase in WP and a nonsignificant difference in yield were found at Fengqiu and Shangqiu. Two irrigation applications 11 improved pre-anthesis biomass and wheat yield while achieving high WP and IWP in normal and dry years (except for extreme drought conditions). The finding also indicated that the distribution of growing season precipitation exerted a significant impact on irrigation time. If the early season precipitation was low, shifting the irrigation to an earlier time to ensure pre-anthesis water requirements, which can synchronously achieve the goals of increasing WP and maintaining a higher yield. In conclusion, optimizing irrigation strategies to various precipitation conditions will be a promising and effective practice for wheat production and water conservation.

Based on a 16-year field experiment (2003–2018) using seven irrigation schedules from W0M0 to W4M3 (numbers are irrigation times in wheat (W) and maize (M) season, 75 mm each) in the winter wheat–summer maize double cropping system, we analyzed annual total water consumption (ET a ) and groundwater table change in terms of net groundwater depletion, annual total grain yield, water productivity (WP), irrigation water productivity (IWP) and marginal benefit of the whole wheat–maize system. Relationship between yield or WP and irrigation or ET a were also revealed. Results showed that (1) total ET a increased as irrigation input increased, ranging from 427.3 mm (Rainfed, W0M0) to 891.0 mm (W4M3). Soil water storage contributed nearly 30% to ET a for winter wheat under water deficit conditions. Pre-sowing soil water storage played an important role in improving the annual yield and WP of both wheat and maize by promoting germination, seedling emergence and root growth; (2) the rainfed treatment (W0M0) was best for mitigating the groundwater table decline (0.1 m yr-1), followed by W1M1 (0.5 m yr-1) and W2M1 (0.8 m yr-1). Groundwater table decline in M2W2 almost overlapped the observed data at the station (1.1 m yr-1). In W3M2, the farmers’ traditional practice, the groundwater table declined by 1.4 m yr-1, obviously over exploitation, while W4M2 and W4M3 declined by almost 2.0 m yr-1; (3) the relationship between total annual yield and irrigation (or ET a ) followed a quadratic curve. Total annual yield significantly increased from W0M0 to M1W1 (25%) to M2M1 (5%) and then kept stable. Average annual WP decreased as irrigation increased, from 2.4 kg m-3 (W0M0) to 1.6 kg m-3 (W4M3). Average annual IWP and marginal benefit also declined as irrigation increased. These results over 16 years indicated that the W2M1 is the most balanced irrigation regime for wheat– maize rotation to mitigate groundwater decline, maintain grain production, and improve water use efficiency in the NCP.

Abstract:Although the impacts of climate change on crop yield and production in China have been studied, the potential impacts on nitrate leaching are less well-known. In this study, we considered how climate change and crop genotypes with different N uptake capacities could affect soil water drainage, nitrate leaching, and grain yield under currently optimized irrigation and fertilization practices in the spring maize system of northwest China. After testing the performance of the WHCNS (soil Water Heat Carbon Nitrogen Simulator) model, a total number of 420 simulations spanning representative climate projections (2036-2065), genotypes, and time spans led to three key findings. First, the projected climate changes had no significant effects on soil water drainage and thus no impact on nitrate leaching, because the latter was primarily influenced by drainage. Second, the effects of genotype changes on reducing nitrate leaching via increasing N uptake were marginal over the whole growth period, again because these had no significant effect on soil water drainage. Finally, the projected yield reduction (around 6.5%) occurred only in the hottest climate scenario (RCP8.5), in which transpiration was probably a more significant parameter leading to yield differences between climates. We conclude that, to offset the projected yield reduction due to temperature increases, improved agricultural technologies and practices will be needed to cope with decreased crop transpiration. In addition, reducing nitrate leaching through genetic improvement of N uptake should not be considered a research priority for mitigating the effects of current and projected climate scenarios.
Optimizing Nitrogen Management for Summer Maize in the Yellow River Basin a Water Heat Carbon and N Simulator Model Approach with Entropy-Weighted Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution Analysis

Abstract:Summer maize constitutes a major food crop in the Yellow River Basin. Optimizing nitrogen (N) application management for this crop not only elevates its yield but also reduces N leaching, thereby ensuring food security and lessening agricultural surface pollution. Utilizing two years of summer maize field experiments, the soil water heat carbon and N simulator (WHCNS) was calibrated and validated against empirical measurements. Subsequent analyses employed the calibrated WHCNS to analyze 56 different N management scenarios. These scenarios varied in terms of N application levels, basal N to topdress application ratios, and chase ratios. The entropy-weighted TOPSIS method was utilized for the optimization, considering agronomic, environmental, and economic aspects. The model’s calibration accuracy was validated by root mean square errors, relative root mean square errors, and mean errors for soil volumetric water content and soil nitrate N content. The calibration results demonstrated that the new model was capable of simulating the soil hydraulic characteristics, N cycling, and the growth and development of summer maize during the reproductive phase in the Yellow River Basin. Scenario analyses revealed that increasing the N application initially elevated, then stabilized, summer maize yields, whereas the N agronomic efficiency first increased and then decreased. Moreover, reducing the basal N to topdress application ratios and increasing the chase ratios during the tasseling and flowering stages could minimize the nitrate N leaching and optimize both the yield and N fertilizer agronomic utilization. Specifically, the optimal N management for the current year involved applying 170 kg·ha−1 of N with a basal N to the topdress N application ratio of 1:5 and a chase ratio of 1:1 during the tasseling and flowering stages. This study lays the foundation for developing N fertilizer management strategies for summer maize cultivation in the Yellow River Basin. Furthermore, the methodology established here can be adapted for optimizing the management of diverse crops in different geographical regions.

Abstract:Improving winter wheat water use efficiency in the North China Plain (NCP), China is essential in light of current irrigation water shortages. In this study, the AquaCrop model was used to calibrate, and validate winter wheat crop performance under various planting dates and irrigation application rates. All experiments were conducted at the Xiaotangshan experimental site in Beijing, China, during seasons of 2008/2009, 2009/2010, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. This model was first calibrated using data from 2008/2009 and 2009/2010, and subsequently validated using data from 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. The results showed that the simulated canopy cover (CC), biomass yield (BY) and grain yield (GY) were consistent with the measured CC, BY and GY, with corresponding coefficients of determination (R(2)) of 0.93, 0.91 and 0.93, respectively. In addition, relationships between BY, GY and transpiration (T), (R(2) = 0.57 and 0.71, respectively) was observed. These results suggest that frequent irrigation with a small amount of water significantly improved BY and GY. Collectively, these results indicate that the AquaCrop model can be used in the evaluation of various winter wheat irrigation strategies. The AquaCrop model predicted winter wheat CC, BY and GY with acceptable accuracy. Therefore, we concluded that AquaCrop is a useful decision-making tool for use in efforts to optimize wheat winter planting dates, and irrigation strategies.

Influences of irrigation and fertilization on soil N cycle and losses from wheat-maize cropping system in northern China

Abstract:Excess of water irrigation and fertilizer consumption by crops has resulted in high soil nitrogen (N) losses and underground water contamination not only in China but worldwide. This study explored the effects of soil N input, soil N output, as well as the effect of different irrigation and N- fertilizer managements on residual N. For this, two consecutive years of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) -summer maize (Zea mays L.) rotation was conducted with: N applied at 0 kg N ha-1 yr-1, 420 kg N ha-1 yr-1 and 600 kg N ha-1 yr-1 under fertigation (DN0, DN420, DN600), and N applied at 0 kg N ha-1 yr-1 and 600 kg N ha-1 yr-1 under flood irrigation (FN0, FN600). The results demonstrated that low irrigation water consumption resulted in a 57.2% lower of irrigation-N input (p < 0.05) in DN600 when compared to FN600, especially in a rainy year like 2015-2016. For N output, no significant difference was found with all N treatments. Soil gaseous N losses were highly correlated with fertilization (p < 0.001) and were reduced by 23.6%-41.7% when fertilizer N was decreased by 30%. Soil N leaching was highly affected by irrigation and a higher reduction was observed under saving irrigation (reduced by 33.9%-57.3%) than under optimized fertilization (reduced by 23.6%-50.7%). The net N surplus was significantly increased with N application rate but was not affected by irrigation treatments. Under the same N level (600 kg N ha-1 yr-1), fertigation increased the Total Nitrogen (TN) stock by 17.5% (0-100 cm) as compared to flood irrigation. These results highlighted the importance to further reduction of soil N losses under optimized fertilization and irrigation combined with N stabilizers or balanced- N fertilization for future agriculture development.

Abstract:The arid and semi-arid region of northwest China is an important region for spring maize production in China, but improper water and fertilizer management has caused ecological problems in these regions. A two-year field experiment was conducted in 2015 and 2016 in the Gansu Province of China to investigate the effects of different irrigation amounts and fertilization rates on growth, grain yield, water and fertilizer use efficiency, and soil nutrient residue of drip-fertigated spring maize, and explore the optimal combination of irrigation amount and fertilization rate based on a multi-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (MFCE) model. The irrigation levels included I60 (60% of crop evapotranspiration), I75, I90 and I105 in 2015 and I60, I80, I100 and I120 in 2016. The N-P2O5-K2O fertilization rates (kg ha−1) were F60–30–30, F120–60–60, F180–90–90 and F240–120–120. The results showed that plant height, stem diameter and leaf area index were highest under F240–120–120. Maize yield, dry matter, water use efficiency (WUE) followed a upward opening parabola with irrigation amount and fertilization rate, and reached the maximum under I90F180–90–90 in 2015 and under I100F180–90–90 in 2016. With the simultaneous increase in irrigation amount and fertilization rate, nitrate nitrogen content in the 60–120 cm soil layer showed an increasing trend. Based on the MFCE model, the irrigation amount of 415–450 mm combined with the N-P2O5-K2O rate of 144–77–77 to 180–90–90 kg ha−1 obtained the optimal comprehensive benefit of maize growth, economic return, water and fertilizer utilization and environmental benefit. This work can provide a scientific basis for the optimization and management of spring maize irrigation and fertilization in northwest China.

Abstract:In order to explore the suitable water management patterns for high yield of spring maize under drip irrigation in oasis regions of North Xinjiang, two maize cultivars (Zhengdan 958 and Kenyu 02) were used to study the effect of water-controlled irrigation on the leaf SPAD value at V12-R5 stage, and chlorophyll content, photosyntheticcharacteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters of ear leaf at filling stage in the field. Results showed that the leaf SPAD values peaked under moderate soil moisture treatments during V12-R3 stage. The field capacity of soil moisture above 65% was suitable for the development of corn at R5 stage. The chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophyll contents, carotene, chlorophyll a/b were significantly decreased when soil moisture was less than 75%, however the above parameters had no significant difference when soil moisture was more than 85%. The net photosynthetic rate (Pn), transpiration rate (Tr) and stomata conductance (gs) of ear leaf were significantly decreased in filling stages when soil moisture was less than 75%, but the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) was significantly increased. The reduction of gs was not observed when the soil moisture was more than 85% of field capacities. Meanwhile, the variable fluorescence to maximal fluorescence (Fv/Fm), potential activities of PSII (Fv/Fo), PS2 actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPS2), photochemical quenching (qP) and electron transport rate (rETR) decreased significantly under both higher and lower soil moisture treatments. However, the Fo/Fm and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) significantly increased at the same time. The path analysis showed that the decrease of Pn resulted from the decrease of Fv/Fo and rETR, which finally resulted in decreased production of spring maize. Therefore, the optimal field moistures for these two spring maize cultivars were >60%, >70%, >75%, >80% and >65% for the growing stages V6, V12, R1, R3 and R5, respectively, to obtain a high yield in the oasis region.

Abstract:Quantitatively assessing the impact of irrigation and groundwater management strategies is crucial for improving water productivity and soil salinity control in cold arid areas with shallow groundwater tables (CAASGT). However, existing studies often focus on specific periods, either the crop growth period or the freeze–thaw period, due to the lack of appropriate models that can accurately represent both soil freeze–thaw and crop growth processes. This limited focus results in incomplete year-round insights, given the significant differences and interactions in hydrological processes during these two periods. In this study, we coupled the agro-hydrological model (i.e., the AHC model) and the cold region hydrological model (i.e., the SHAW model) to simulate the year-round agro-hydrological processes and crop growth in CAASGT. The coupled model was rigorously calibrated and validated using two years of field experiment data collected from a maize field in the upper Yellow River basin (YRB). Subsequently, the validated model was employed to analyze the effect of different irrigation and groundwater management scenarios on crop yield, soil salinity, and water productivity in two hydrological years (dry and wet years). Results indicated that increasing groundwater depth was beneficial for soil salinity control in all scenarios but reduced maize yield at low irrigation levels. Autumn irrigation proves essential for soil salinity control, with reducing the irrigation amount in autumn irrigation period having a more significant impact on maize yield than that in growing season. Additionally, soil thawing time significantly affects soil salt accumulation and crop yield, with earlier thawing time leading to more severe salt accumulation at the end of the freeze–thaw period, restraining maize seedling growth and decreasing maize yield. These results are expected to offer year-round insights into improving water productivity and soil salinity control in CAASGT.
