Abstract:An integrated approach combining water quality indices (WQIs), multivariate data mining, and geographic information system (GIS) was employed to examine the water quality of Bheemasandra Lake, located adjacent to a sewage treatment plant (STP) in Tumakuru city, India. The analysis of 22 lake water samples, examined before and after the monsoons, revealed that the physicochemical parameters namely — electrical conductivity, biochemical oxygen demand, turbidity, total dissolved solids, ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrates, phosphates, magnesium, total hardness, total alkalinity, and calcium — exceeded the acceptable limits stipulated by national and international standards. The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment WQI (pre-monsoon: 25.3; post-monsoon: 33.9) and weighted arithmetic WQI (pre-monsoon: 3398; post-monsoon: 2093) designated the water as unsafe for drinking. Irrigation WQIs (sodium adsorption ratio, sodium percentage, residual sodium carbonate, magnesium hazard, permeability index, and potential salinity) implied water's suitability for irrigation. However, electrical conductivity indicated otherwise. Industrial WQIs (Larson–Skold Index, Langelier Index, Aggressive Index, and Puckorius Scaling Index) illustrated scaling propensity and the chloride sulfate mass ratio alluded galvanic corrosion potential. Hierarchical cluster analysis gathered 22 sampling points into two clusters (cluster 1: relatively lower polluted regions; cluster 2: highly polluted regions) for each season based on similarities in water features. Principal component analysis extracted four (79.07% cumulative variance) and six (87.14% cumulative variance) principal components before and after the monsoons, respectively. These components identified the primary pollution sources as urban sewage and natural lithological processes. WQI maps, created using the inverse distance weighted interpolation technique, enhanced the visualization of spatial–temporal variations. This study highlights the dire consequences of urbanization, STP pollution, and sewage management failures, necessitating that concerned authorities should implement policies and measures to curb the negative impacts on the environment and public health.

Abstract:The design of a water quality monitoring network (WQMN) is a complicated decision-making process because each sampling involves high installation, operational, and maintenance costs. Therefore, data with the highest information content should be collected. The effect of seasonal variation in point and diffuse pollution loadings on river water quality may have a significant impact on the optimal selection of sampling locations, but this possible effect has never been addressed in the evaluation and design of monitoring networks. The present study proposes a systematic approach for siting an optimal number and location of river water quality sampling stations based on seasonal or monsoonal variations in both point and diffuse pollution loadings. The proposed approach conceptualizes water quality monitoring as a two-stage process; the first stage of which is to consider all potential water quality sampling sites, selected based on the existing guidelines or frameworks, and the locations of both point and diffuse pollution sources. The monitoring at all sampling sites thus identified should be continued for an adequate period of time to account for the effect of the monsoon season. In the second stage, the monitoring network is then designed separately for monsoon and non-monsoon periods by optimizing the number and locations of sampling sites, using a modified Sanders approach. The impacts of human interventions on the design of the sampling net are quantified geospatially by estimating diffuse pollution loads and verified with land use map. To demonstrate the proposed methodology, the Kali River basin in the western Uttar Pradesh state of India was selected as a study area. The final design suggests consequential pre- and post-monsoonal changes in the location and priority of water quality monitoring stations based on the seasonal variation of point and diffuse pollution loadings.

Abstract:Rural households of North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal (India), suffer twofold water-related problems, viz. supply of contaminated groundwater and waterlogging due to excessive rainfall for the last four decades. The present study deals with a mixed mode approach encompassing physical, socio-economic, and hydrogeological aspects to assess the water scarcity and feasibility of RWH among four blocks of North 24 Parganas, India. A hydrogeological cross-section (Fench Diagram) was developed to assess the potential of artificial recharge followed by the identification of artificial recharge sites with suitable structures using RS and GIS. Water quality parameters like TDS, ammonia-N, and chloride were found within the respective safe limit prescribed for drinking purposes in the water samples. The extent of water stress was assessed by a socio-economic survey conducted for rural households. Rural households expressed their willingness to adopt RWH subject to certain conditions. The LULC study showed a rapid increase (21.69%) in the built-up area during 2010–2020. The capacity of the storage tank was calculated as 6000 l for individual rural households. Sixty grams of disinfectant was suggested for the treatment of the harvested rainwater. The methods suggested would help local authorities execute successfully the RWH schemes in water-stressed areas.

Abstract:Sir, Not only are isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae showing resistance to -lactams, but strains resistant to macrolides, tetracycline, quinolones and trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole, either alone or in combination, are now being detected. This growing worldwide incidence of multidrugresistant S. pneumoniae has created the need for new, effective oral agents that can be used to treat adult and paediatric pneumococcal infections. Faropenem is a novel penem antimicrobial agent intended for oral administration. Penems share structural similarities with both penicillins and cephalosporins. Preliminary reports indicate that faropenem’s activity is not only broad spectrum (Gram-negative, Gram-positive and some anaerobic bacteria), but also bactericidal. Previous studies have shown that target modifications via altered penicillin-binding proteins cause a significant increase in the MICs of faropenem compared with wild-type strains. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the in vitro activity of faropenem against genetically characterized S. pneumoniae isolates resistant to classes of antibiotics other than -lactams. This in vitro study compared the activities of faropenem and 21 other oral and/or parenteral antimicrobial agents against 385 different recent European clinical isolates, with some of the isolates tested displaying cross-resistance to several of the antibiotics studied, i.e. erythromycin, tetracycline, levofloxacin and trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole. NCCLS broth microdilution methodology was used. The isolates comprised five groups of genetically characterized pneumococci: (i) those resistant to erythromycin and clindamycin [erm(B) genotype]; (ii) those resistant to erythromycin, but susceptible to clindamycin [mef(A) genotype]; (iii) those resistant to tetracycline [tet(M) genotype]; (iv) those with decreased susceptibility to levofloxacin [mutations in gyr(A) and par(C), combined with efflux activity]; and (v) those resistant to trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole [mutations in the dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) gene as well as modifications within sul(A), which encodes dihydropteroate synthase (DHPS)]. They were collected from patients with bacteraemia, communityacquired respiratory tract infections or nosocomial pneumonia during international surveillance studies between 1997 and 1999. Only one isolate, which was considered clinically significant according to local criteria, per patient was studied. A total of 215 S. pneumoniae isolates were selected that were resistant to erythromycin: 157 carried the erm(B) gene and 58 the mef(A) gene. All isolates with erm(B) displayed the MLSB phenotype, while all of those with mef(A) had the M phenotype. All 240 tetracycline-resistant S. pneumoniae isolates studied carried the tet(M) gene and none the tet(O) gene. Twenty-five S. pneumoniae isolates were selected that had a decreased susceptibility to levofloxacin (MIC 2 mg/L). Ten of 16 isolates with a levofloxacin MIC of 4 mg/L demonstrated mutations within par(C) encoding Ser-79 Phe, while six of 16 demonstrated mutations encoding Asp-83 Asn. All 16 isolates demonstrated mutations within gyr(A) encoding either a Ser-81 Phe or a Ser-81 Tyr amino acid change. None of these mutations was found in any of the nine isolates with levofloxacin MICs of 2 mg/L and ciprofloxacin MICs of 4 mg/L. A mutation in par(E) was found to result in the amino acid change Ile-460 Val in 18 of the 25 isolates tested. No alteration was found in GyrB. Reserpine lowered ciprofloxacin MICs by between one and four doubling dilutions in 20 of 25 isolates tested with a ciprofloxacin MIC 4 mg/L. Therefore, an efflux system probably contributed to the decreased ciprofloxacin susceptibility in most of the isolates tested. All 50 S. pneumoniae isolates that were resistant to trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole were also resistant to the two drugs separately. The DHFR genes were sequenced and all isolates displayed the amino acid change Ile-100 Leu, as described previously. With regard to sulphonamide resistance, sequence comparisons of the chromosomal DHPS gene of resistant and susceptible clinical pneumococcal isolates revealed duplications of either three or six bases, resulting in the repetition of one or two amino acids in the region from Arg-58 to Tyr-63 of the DHPS of resistant isolates, as described previously.
Emerging pollutants characterization, mitigation and toxicity assessment of sewage wastewater treatment plant- India: A case study

Abstract:India faces major challenges related to fresh water supply and the reuse of treated wastewater is an important strategy to combat water scarcity. Wastewater in Gorakhpur, India, is treated by a decentralised wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) and the treated wastewater is reused in the rural area. This research provides important scientific data that ascertain the safety of wastewater reuse in this region. The physicochemical characteristics, including pigment, ionic strength, BOD, COD, TDS, TSS, salinity, total N, ammonium N, phenolics, heavy metals, and sulphate, of the inlet and outlet sewage water samples (SWWs) from a wastewater treatment facility was conducted. These parameters were found to be significantly over the national limit. The inlet and outlet samples were further characterised by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). SEM showed microstructure and the presence of various metals, polymers, and other co-pollutants in the samples and FT-IR confirmed the presence of aldehyde, hard liquor, and nitrogen molecules in the SWW's discharge. Many endocrine disruptors and potentially mutagenic chemical substances (e.g., Dodecane, Hexadecane, Octadecane etc.) were identified in the outlet SWW by the GC-MS analysis. Toxicity of the SWW was assessed via phytotoxicity assessment using Phaseolus mungo L. and histological and biochemical analyses of Heteropneustes fossilis in a 24-h exposure study. Results confirmed the wastewater was harmful and inhibited germination of P. mungo L. by >80% compared to the control, destroyed gill laminae and significantly increased oxidative stress (above 5% increase in catalase production) in H. fossilis. This work clearly demonstrated that the quality of the treated wastewater in Gorakhpur was poor and immediate action is needed before it can be discharged or reused.

Abstract:A Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS) provides an economically feasible and efficient wastewater treatment solution especially in developing countries. It has an enormous potential for developing a sustainable environmental sanitation system. In this study, the treatment efficiency of eight DEWATS plants was evaluated in the state of Maharashtra, India, for their performance in terms of selected physico-chemical parameters of the wastewater. Although the efficiency of some of the plants was lower than that reported in literature, the effluent quality of all the plants was within the permissible discharge limits of the Central Pollution Control Board for all the parameters. Comprehensive assessment of Plant I was carried in terms of its technical and socio-economic aspects. Moreover, LCA tool has been utilized to evaluate the environmental impacts of the operation stage of DEWATS. The midpoint, CML 2001 (April 2015) methodology was adopted, in which 11 impact categories were considered. From the life cycle impact assessment and interpretation, the main impacts are identified as releases of COD, P-PO43−, and N-NH4+ to water bodies and disposal of sludge. Due to negligible energy consumption, the operation stage was found to be less damaging to the environment. It was concluded that DEWATS can be a good alternative for treating wastewater with negligible energy and chemical consumption.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Government efforts to address massive shortfalls in rural water and sanitation in India have centred on construction of community water sources and toilets for selected households. However, deficiencies with water quality and quantity at the household level and community coverage and actual use of toilets have led Gram Vikas, a local non-governmental organization in Odisha, India, to develop an approach that provides household-level piped water connections contingent on full community-level toilet coverage.METHODS: This matched cohort study was designed to assess the effectiveness of a combined piped water and sanitation intervention. Households with children <5 years in 45 randomly selected intervention villages and 45 matched control villages will be followed over 17 months. The primary outcome is prevalence of diarrhoeal diseases; secondary health outcomes include soil-transmitted helminth infection, nutritional status, seroconversion to enteric pathogens, urogenital infections and environmental enteric dysfunction. In addition, intervention effects on sanitation and water coverage, access and use, environmental fecal contamination, women's empowerment, as well as collective efficacy, and intervention cost and cost-effectiveness will be assessed.ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study protocol has been reviewed and approved by the ethics boards of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK and KIIT University, Bhubaneswar, India. Findings will be disseminated via peer-reviewed literature and presentation to stakeholders, government officials, implementers and researchers.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT02441699.

Abstract:Kathajodi, the principal southern distributary of the Mahanadi River, is the vital source of irrigation and domestic water use for densely populated Cuttack city which receives anthropogenic wastes abundantly. This study assesses the contamination level and primary health status of urban wastewater, and its receiving river Kathajodi based on the physicochemical quality indices employing inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy and aligning with guidelines from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and WHO. The high WQI, HPI, and HEI in the catchment area (KJ2, KJ3, and KJ4) indicate poor water quality due to the influx of domestic waste through the primary drainage system and effluents of healthcare units. A high BOD (4.33–19.66 mg L −1 ) in the catchment indicates high organic matter, animal waste, bacteriological contamination, and low DO, resulting in deterioration of water quality. CR values beyond limits (1.00E − 06 to 1.00E − 04) in three locations of catchment due to higher Cd, Pb, and As indicate significant carcinogenic risk, while high Mn, Cu, and Al content is responsible for several non-carcinogenic ailments and arsenic-induced physiological disorders. The elevated heavy metals Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn, in Kathajodi, could be due to heavy coal combustion, vehicle exhaust, and industrial waste. On the other hand, Cu, Fe, K, and Al could be from agricultural practices, weathered rocks, and crustal materials. Positive significant ( p ≤ 0.05) Pearson correlations between physicochemical parameters indicate their common anthropogenic origin and similar chemical characteristics. A strong correlation of PCA between elements and physiological parameters indicates their role in water quality deterioration. Assessing the surface water quality and heavy metal contents from this study will offer critical data to policymakers for monitoring and managing public health concerns.

Abstract:India's concern about wastewater generation outpacing the centralised treatment capacity has increased significantly. This study demonstrated an on-beach public toilet equipped with a sustainable decentralised treatment system in Goa, India. The research gap of the number of toilet users, freshwater demand, and wastewater (WW) generated per day in India was documented. The treatment system consisted of a modified French-type vertical flow constructed wetland (MVFCW) and electro-chlorinator. The first and second stage MVFCW were an unsaturated and saturated type, respectively. The onsite beach bore well water with a chloride concentration of 8464 ± 415.18 mg/L was electrolyzed for 1 h at 40.49 Am−2 to perform ex situ electrochlorination disinfection. The MVFCW effluent was disinfected with 2412.50 ± 278.61 mg/L of chlorine (Cl2) generated at a disinfectant dilution ratio of 1:300 (Cl2:WW) to ensure less than 5 mg/L residual Cl2. The average daily toilet users, freshwater usage, and WW generated were 96 ± 17.02, 1381.38 ± 380.35 L, and 1407.98 ± 611.8 L, respectively. The integrated treatment system treated 1,400 L/day. The integrated treatment system achieved an average percentage removal of 93.38 ± 0.38% chemical oxygen demand, 79.18 ± 1.55% NO−3, 98.45 ± 0.22% total ammoniacal nitrogen, 93.13 ± 1.19% PO4−3, 87.28 ± 0.2% total suspended solids, 83.09 ± 1.16% total organic carbon, 80.22 ± 0.87% total carbon, 80.05 ± 0.12% inorganic carbon, and 100% coliform. The cost of power consumption was 0.17 INR m−3.
Progression of atherosclerosis after venous coronary artery bypass graft surgery: a 15-year follow-up study.

Abstract:We investigated the influence of progression of atherosclerosis on clinical outcome in a cohort of 428 consecutive patients with isolated venous coronary artery bypass graft surgery followed prospectively for 15 years. In 189 patients 307 repeat coronary angiograms were performed because of recurrent signs of ischemia. Progression in the native coronary circulation only was found in 38 angiograms (12%), in both the native circulation and in venous grafts in 66 angiograms (21%), in venous grafts only in 135 angiograms (44%), and no progression was found in 68 angiograms (22%). In all the angiographies with a proven progression in the native coronary arteries, 40% was found to be distal to a vein graft insertion. In multivariate analysis the number of distal anastomoses predicts progression in both the native circulation and in venous grafts. Thus, progression is determined by the extensiveness of coronary artery disease at operation. Also, the interval between operation and repeat angiography predicts progression in the native circulation. We conclude that clinical outcome is also determined by progression in the native coronary circulation. Secondary prevention may, therefore, benefit not only the long-term result in patients with venous bypass grafts but probably also in patients with any type of coronary bypass surgery.

Abstract:Water end-use studies disaggregate the quantity and frequency of water uses for various household purposes. Water end-use studies are available but none for India, which is gradually approaching a water-scarce condition from being a water-stressed country at present. This implies a need for incorporating water end-use understanding for augmenting urban recycling plans and strategies. To identify socio-demographic determinants of water end-use consumption for use in targeted urban water management, we focused on the indoor micro-components of bathing, dish-washing, laundering, and cleaning at households across the twin cities of Gujarat, a water-scarce province of India. A mixed-method approach was used for data collection in which questionnaire surveys (estimated or indirect measurements) were coupled with water meters (direct measurements) at households. The twin cities of Gujrat represent a spatial variation in greywater production at homes even at a distance of 30-40 km. Direct measurement showed less total average water consumption in Ahmedabad (83 L/HH/d) than Gandhinagar (105 L/HH/d), while indirect measurement showed indoor average consumption of 427 and 497 L/HH/d in the respective cities. Statistical significance of income, family size, and education was noticed on the water consumption pattern of a household. Besides, the study provides the attitude and practice of users towards water conservation behavior. We present new insights and recommendations for future urban water sustainability that are specific to India and applicable to several south-Asian countries.

Water supply management is a multifaceted approach, and an important affecting factor on this approach is the use of potential resources. Effluent reuse is proposed as an efficient solution to improve the management of water resources, particularly in developing countries such as India, where there is a Problem of water scarcity. Water stress has become a perennial concern in most Indian cities. The main Objective of the present study is to investigate requirements of sustainable development of water resources, especially in the case of wastewater recycling and upgrading of wastewater collection and treatment facilities. However, reuse of wastewater has many advantages that are discussed in the present study. Policies related to wastewater reclamation are more important in the Jammu & Kashmir, due to technologic, fundamental, and cultural limitations. These policies can have a significant impact on wastewater reclamation and water resources management.
Pollution Source Identification and Suitability Assessment of Groundwater Quality for Drinking Purposes in Semi-Arid Regions of the Southern Part of India

Abstract:The quality of groundwater plays an important role in human health, and it majorly influences the agricultural process in the southern part of India. The present study mainly focused on evaluating the quality of groundwater used for domestic purpose in semi-arid regions of the southern part of India. The samples were collected in 36 locations, covering the entire investigation zone. The collected samples were analyzed for various physical and chemical characteristics of groundwater and compared with the world health organization standards. The entropy-weighted water quality index (EWQI) of the groundwater revealed that 16.67% of the samples required primary-level treatment before they could be used for drinking purposes. About 72.23% of the samples were in the good-to-medium category for drinking purposes, as was identified through weighted overlay analysis. The ionic relationship plot was used to identify the source of contamination and it revealed that carbonate weathering and anthropogenic activities are the primary sources of groundwater contamination. The present results show the contaminated zones and offer more helpful solutions to strengthen the water management policy in the study region.

Abstract:Despite growing health concerns and increasing water scarcity, adequate wastewater treatment and reuse remains limited in India. Low-cost, decentralised, and nature-based on-site sanitation systems could play a key role in a circular water approach. This paper evaluates the performance of a Wastewater Fertigated Short Rotation Coppice (wfSRC) system based on willow, poplar, and bamboo species as a potential solution, offering low-cost, efficient water treatment, and high biomass production. Through a full-scale wfSRC pilot plant (250 m 3 ·day −1 municipal wastewater on 6864 m 2 ) established at Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh, India, treatment capacities, biomass production rates, and contamination tolerance of different willow, poplar, and bamboo species were investigated. The chemical compositions of incoming wastewater, percolation water, soil, and biomass were monitored regularly. Despite the high load, all plant sections of the wfSRC system showed efficient removal of wastewater-originated pollutants. BOD5 and COD removal efficiencies were up to 99% and 95% respectively. Removal efficiencies for PO4-P reached 93% and for TN 91%. In general, total nitrogen and phosphate loads appear to be the limiting design parameters under the conditions at Aligarh to meet all discharge limits in India. Biomass production was projected to be >225 tDM·ha −1 ·yr −1 for bamboo, 65 tDM·ha −1 ·yr −1 for willow, and 206 tDM·ha −1 ·yr −1 for poplar. The pilot, conducted from March 2022 to June 2023, showcased how these densely planted agroforestry systems can effectively treat wastewater through natural processes such as oxidation, microbial degradation, and plant uptake. The findings demonstrate wfSRC's potential to serve as a nature-based, sustainable approach to wastewater treatment, particularly beneficial for suburban and rural areas in India and similar regions worldwide. This paper also provides recommendations for future implementation of wfSRC systems, emphasizing the need for careful planning regarding plant selection, system design, and operational strategies to maximize treatment efficiency and biomass production.

Abstract:Groundwater is the basic and prime component to be considered, as it is directly linked with the developmental activities of any area in the whole world. In the current scenario the availability of groundwater for future generation is biggest problematic question to be asked by every nation. In the actual scenario its availability is minimum and the dependency on groundwater is maximum to meet all the requirements of water demand and this situation has been continuing years long due to excessive and abnormal increments in the growth of population [6] and it becomes more worse especially in the developing countries as well as in the urban areas [8], at one side the population is increasing and at the same time the availability of natural resources like soil, clean air and portable water keep on polluting due to the natural activities like floods, droughts etc apart from manmade activities in order to improving living standards. Water in the aquifers of earth crust depends on the soil porosity, pore size and the geological conditions [10] with respect to the holding capacity of water, even though groundwater is the source to consider as one of the rechargeable resource but it is completely depends on the measures to adopt for recharging such as recharging pits and the average rainfall of that particular area. In this study all the parameters of IS drinking water quality standards 10500 – 2012 are examined for the collected groundwater samples of three cycles and the average values of three cycles were considered as final results. The results were compared to find out the existed water quality scenario at the study area.

Abstract:Abstract Urbanization has severely impacted the world water resources especially the shallow groundwater systems. There is a need of a robust method for quantifying the water quality degradation, which is still a challenge for most of the urban centers across the world. In this study, a highly urbanized region of Ganga basin is selected to critically evaluate commonly used WQIs and compare with fuzzy modeling. A total of 28 water samples were collected from diverse sources (surface and groundwaters) in the vicinity of urban region covering an area of 216 km 2 during the premonsoon period. TDS, TH, NO 3 − , and F − values were found to be above the permissible limits in 57%, 89%, 4%, and 7% samples, respectively. The WQIs (entropy and integrated) outputs were found to be similar with 89% of the samples falling under moderate category. Fuzzy modeling was carried out allowing user-defined weighting factors for the most influential ions, and the output suggested 96% of the samples falling under moderate to excellent categories. Based on the chemical results and considering the lithology of the study area, the geochemical reactions controlling the water quality were deduced. This study outlines a systematic approach of evaluating the overall water quality of an urban region highlighting the merits and limitations of WQIs. It also justifies the immediate need to generate more robust data to achieve the sustainable development goals 6 (clean water and sanitation) and 11 (sustainability of cities and human settlement). Abstract:Wastewater reuse, a known alternative, lacks strong policy and institutional framework in India. There are various non-potable uses in urban areas that can be supplemented with treated wastewater for reducing the pressure on freshwater resources. The current policies in India promote use of treated wastewater for agricultural irrigation and industrial use, but they suggest no measures for reuse of the same in urban areas. The research aims to identify whether the water available in an urban area is used sufficiently and fulfils the needs of the city residents in a sustainable manner and advocates wastewater reuse as a possible option for improving its use efficiency. The study reviews the water-use efficiency of Bhopal city using performance indicators. The results suggest that Bhopal city receives enough supply for its needs; however, it is majorly dependent on its external resources. It is thus imperative that the city reuse its water efficiently and look for wastewater as an alternative source. The research suggests a measurability framework for the local administration to set and identify targeted water use and reuse options within its periphery. The study also identifies certain shortcomings in existing policies and suggests measures to promote judicious reuse of wastewater in urban areas.

Abstract:Much of the developing world and areas of the developed world suffer water vulnerability. Engineering solutions enable technically efficient extraction and diversion of water towards areas of demand but, without rebalancing resource regeneration, can generate multiple adverse ecological and human consequences. The Banas River, Rajasthan (India), has been extensively developed for water diversion, particularly from the Bisalpur Dam from which water is appropriated by powerful urban constituencies dispossessing local people. Coincidentally, abandonment of traditional management, including groundwater recharge practices, is leading to increasingly receding and contaminated groundwater. This creates linked vulnerabilities for rural communities, irrigation schemes, urban users, dependent ecosystems and the multiple ecosystem services that they provide, compounded by climate change and population growth. This paper addresses vulnerabilities created by fragmented policy measures between rural development, urban and irrigation water supply and downstream consequences for people and wildlife. Perpetuating narrowly technocentric approaches to resource exploitation is likely only to compound emerging problems. Alternatively, restoration or innovation of groundwater recharge practices, particularly in the upper catchment, can represent a proven, ecosystem-based approach to resource regeneration with linked beneficial socio-ecological benefits. Hybridising an ecosystem-based approach with engineered methods can simultaneously increase the security of rural livelihoods, piped urban and irrigation supplies, and the vitality of river ecosystems and their services to beneficiaries. A renewed policy focus on local-scale water recharge practices balancing water extraction technologies is consistent with emerging Rajasthani policies, particularly Jal Swavlamban Abhiyan ('water self-reliance mission'). Policy reform emphasising recharge can contribute to water security and yield socio-economic outcomes through a systemic understanding of how the water system functions, and by connecting goals and budgets across multiple, currently fragmented policy areas. The underpinning principles of this necessary paradigm shift are proven and have wider geographic relevance, though context-specific research is required to underpin robust policy and practical implementation.
