Abstract:Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common vestibular disorder characterized by episodic vertigo. BPPV primarily affects older adults. Thus, understanding the potential relationship between BPPV and osteoporosis is clinically important. We performed a systematic search of MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, and Cochrane Library databases for studies on the risk of osteoporosis between BPPV (+) and BPPV (−) groups up until 17 April 2023. We compared osteoporosis prevalence between groups and performed subgroup analyses for male, female, and older patients (aged ≥ 55 years). The 12 studies included 32,460 patients with BPPV and 476,304 controls. Pooled analysis showed that the BPPV (+) group had a significantly higher osteoporosis risk than the control group (odds ratio [OR], 1.73; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.45–2.06; p < 0.01). Subgroup analyses also presented similar trends as male (OR, 2.41; 95% CI, 1.18–4.90; p = 0.02), female (OR, 2.14; 95% CI, 1.57–2.92; p < 0.001), and older patient subgroups (OR, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.47–2.49; p < 0.01) showed a higher osteoporosis risk in the BPPV (+) group than in the control group. This meta-analysis supports the hypothesis that patients with BPPV have a higher osteoporosis prevalence than those without.

Abstract:Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder originating in the inner ear and is very uncomfortable for a patient, but it can be managed efficiently and effectively. It may be an uncommon complication after certain jaw bone related surgeries, such as an osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE). OSFE allows ridge augmentation and immediate implant placement to be completed concurrently. The procedure can occasionally cause membrane perforations or postoperative infections, but the rare complication, BPPV, happens if continuous malleting is applied. Immediate identification and proper management can eradicate discomforts resulting from BPPV. Possible preventive strategies, diagnostic examinations, and available treatment modalities for this rare sequela are discussed. Here we present the case of a patient who suffered from BPPV several hours later after OSFE and obtained relief through some medical aids and physiotherapeutic techniques.
[Study on Bone Metabolism in Postmenopausal Women with Idiopathic Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo].

Abstract:Objective: To analyze the bone mineral density and serum osteocalcin levels in postmenopausal women with idiopathic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Methods: A total of 64 postmenopausal women with idiopathic BPPV were selected as the study group, and 98 postmenopausal healthy women were selected as the control group. Bone mineral density and serum osteocalcin levels were analyzed and compared between the groups.χ(2) test was used for numeration data and t test was used for measurement data. Results: The prevalence of osteoporosis or osteopenia in BPPV group 67.2% (43/64) was significantly higher than that in the control group 51.0% (50/98) (χ(2)=4.139, P=0.042). Among BPPV subjects, there was a negative correlation between osteocalcin and bone density T (r=-0.469, P<0.001). Osteocalcin was found in normal bone mass subgroup (13.61±4.32)μg/L, decreased bone mass subgroup (17.49±7.61)μg/L, and osteoporosis subgroup (20.83±6.72)μg/L, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant (F=5.39, P=0.007). Conclusions: Bone mineral density in BPPV group is lower than that in control group. The lower the bone mineral density of the patients, the higher the osteocalcin in BPPV group.

Abstract:Bone metastasis is a serious complication of patients with tumor, and most primary tumors can metastasize to bone. And the main threat and the reason for most cancer deaths are not the primary neoplasias, but secondary tumors, the metastases. To minimize the morbidity and economic expenditure associated with bone metastases, it is important to decrease the etiological factors of bone metastasis. Although current evidence suggested that the therapies to the underlying malignancy bone metastasis might result in bone loss leading to osteoporosis, no studies have shown direct evidence the successful seeding of bone metastases of cancer cells is the part played by osteoporosis. In the state of osteoporosis, for the enhancement of the osteolysis, the increased inflammatory factors could make blood vessels leakier, resulting in the easier hematogenous metastasis to bone and bone marrow. Moreover, leptin, which was positive correlation with osteoporosis, has been showed to exert angiogenic effects and could regulate VEGF expression, promoting the proliferation of the cancer blood vessel. In addition, the increased growth factors in osteoporosis could enrich the local microenvironment, promoting the growth of the metastasis mass. Given the above background, we hypothesize that osteoporosis may be a potential contributor to the bone metastases.

Abstract:Osteoporosis is a common aging-related disease diagnosed primarily using bone mineral density (BMD). Extracellular vesicles (EVs) remain unexplored in the context of osteoporosis. Towards this, EVs were isolated from plasma of a discovery cohort with 8 non-osteoporotic and 8 osteoporotic individuals, and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) revealed a significantly higher EV concentration in osteoporotic individuals (P = 0.003). Moreover, EVs concentration showed a linear correlation with bone mineral density (BMD) values (linear correlation coefficient r = 0.9542, deviation from zero, p < 0.001). Results using a mouse model of osteoporosis confirmed that the number of EVs in mice from hindlimb unloading group was significantly higher than that from the age-matched control group (p = 0.015). TaqMan Real-Time PCR demonstrated that miR-335-5p, -320a, -483-5p, and miR-21-5p, were significantly higher expressed in osteoporotic patients compared with non-osteoporotic individuals. Quantitative real-time PCR shown that Wnt1, Wnt5a, Wnt7a, and Wnt9a mRNAs were lower expressed in osteoporosis derived EVs. In vitro functional assay indicated that osteoporosis derived EVs resulted in reduced mineralization in SaOS-2 cells. In conclusion, these results suggest that osteoporosis increased the secretion of EVs which carry higher expression of miRNAs and decreased expression of Wnt signals, further decreased the mineralization capacity in human osteoblasts.
Correlation of idiopathic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo with cerebral small vessel disease

Abstract:Background Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most prevalent form of peripheral vertigo, with vascular lesions being one of its suspected causes. The older adults are particularly vulnerable to BPPV. Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), on the other hand, is a clinical condition that results from damage of cerebral small vessels. Vascular involvement resulting from age-related risk factors and proinflammatory state may act as the underlying factor linking both BPPV and CSVD. Aim The objective of this study is to explore the potential correlation between BPPV and CSVD by examining whether Individuals aged 50 and older with BPPV exhibit a greater burden of CSVD. Materials and methods This retrospective study included patients aged 50 years and older who had been diagnosed with BPPV. A control group consisting of patients diagnosed with idiopathic facial neuritis (IFN) during the same time period was also included. The burden of cerebral white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) was evaluated using the Fazekas scale. An ordinal regression analysis was conducted to investigate the potential correlation between BPPV and WMHs. Results The study included a total of 101 patients diagnosed with BPPV and 116 patients with IFN. Patients with BPPV were found to be significantly more likely (OR = 2.37, 95% CI 1.40–4.03, p = 0.001) to have a higher Fazekas score compared to the control group. Brain infarctions, hypertension, and age were all identified as significant predictors of white matter hyperplasia on MRI, with OR of 9.9 (95% CI 4.21–24.84, P<0.001), 2.86 (95% CI 1.67–5.0, P<0.001), and 1.18 (95% CI 1.13–1.22, P<0.001) respectively. Conclusion Our findings suggest that vascular impairment caused by age-related risk factors and proinflammatory status may be contributing factors to the development of BPPV in individuals aged 50 and above, as we observed a correlation between the suffering of BPPV and the severity of WMHs.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is associated with an increased risk of fracture: a population-based cohort study

Abstract:Study design: A nationwide, population-based, retrospective cohort study. Objectives: To investigate whether benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is associated with an increased risk of fracture. Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is a brief rotational vertigo induced by head position change that may increase the risk of falls and, therefore, fracture. Methods: Data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database were used for this study. We selected a case cohort comprising 3796 patients aged over 20 years who were newly diagnosed with BPPV between 2000 and 2006. In addition, we randomly selected a control cohort of 15 184 individuals without BPPV. Patients with BPPV were matched to individuals in the control group according to sex, age, and index year. A Cox proportional hazard regression was performed to compute the hazard ratio of fracture, after adjusting for demographic characteristics and comorbidities. Results: The prevalence of comorbidities was higher among patients with BPPV. After adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities, patients with BPPV exhibited a 1.14-fold (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04, 1.25; P<.01) higher risk of fracture than those without BPPV. Trunk fracture (vertebra, rib, and pelvis) was the fracture type with the highest adjusted hazard ratio (1.24; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.45; P<.01) in patients with BPPV relative to those without BPPV. An analysis stratified according to demographic factors revealed that men with BPPV exhibited a 1.43-fold (95% CI: 1.22, 1.66; P<.001) higher risk of fracture. Patients with BPPV aged over 65 years exhibited a significantly higher risk of fracture (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.17; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.33; P<.05) than did those without BPPV. Conclusion: Patients with BPPV exhibited a higher risk of fracture than did those without BPPV. Level of evidence: Prognosis, level 2b.
Downregulation of VDR in benign paroxysmal positional vertigo patients inhibits otolith‐associated protein expression levels

Abstract:Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common peripheral vertigo‑associated disease. Vitamin D (VD) helps maintain normal otolith function and may be associated with BPPV. VD exerts its biological functions primarily via the VD receptor (VDR). The present study demonstrated that serum VD levels were significantly decreased in patients with BPPV compared with in controls. VDR, otolith‑associated protein otoconin‑90 (OC90) and NADPH oxidase 3 (NOX3) expression levels were also significantly decreased in patients with BPPV compared with in controls. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between VD levels and VDR expression. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis identified VDR expression levels as a potential diagnostic marker for BPPV. OC90 and NOX3 expression levels were notably lower in the inner ear tissue of VDR knockout mice compared with in those of wild‑type mice. In mice overexpressing VDR, OC90 and NOX3 were also overexpressed. Following intravenous injection of VD in VDR knockout mice, expression levels of OC90 and NOX3 were not significantly different from those in VDR knockout mice injected with saline. This indicated that VDR may be underexpressed in patients with BPPV and was associated with the expression levels of otolith‑associated proteins. Moreover, VDR mediated VD activation, leading to otolith protein formation. The present study provided a novel theoretical basis for BPPV onset that may facilitate the development of more effective diagnostic and treatment options.

Can Osteopenia Induce Residual Dizziness After Treatment of Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo?

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether there is an association between osteopenia and residual dizziness after successful treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).METHODS: In all, 62 patients with canalolithiasis-type BPPV were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of residual dizziness after resolution of BPPV. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with residual dizziness. Patients were analyzed based on age, sex, affected semicircular canal, affected side, BPPV duration, and presence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and osteopenia.RESULTS: In univariate analysis, BPPV duration and osteopenia showed a relatively significant association (p < 0.20) with the development of residual dizziness. On subsequent multivariate analysis using these factors, osteopenia remained a statistically significant factor in association with residual dizziness (p = 0.012, odds ratio, 9.916).CONCLUSION: Osteopenia is associated with the development of residual dizziness. BPPV patients with osteopenia more frequently suffer from residual dizziness after successful treatment of BPPV than those without osteopenia.

Identification of a genetic variant underlying familial cases of recurrent benign paroxysmal positional vertigo

Abstract:Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo in humans, yet the molecular etiology is currently unknown. Evidence suggests that genetic factors may play an important role in some cases of idiopathic BPPV, particularly in familial cases, but the responsible genetic variants have not been identified. In this study, we performed whole exome sequencing [including untranslated regions (UTRs)] of 12 families and Sanger sequencing of additional 30 families with recurrent BPPV in Caucasians from the United States (US) Midwest region, to identify the genetic variants responsible for heightened susceptibility to BPPV. Fifty non-BPPV families were included as controls. In silico and experimental analyses of candidate variants show that an insertion variant rs113784532 (frameshift causing truncation) in the neural cadherin gene PCDHGA10 (protocadherin-gamma A10) is an exceedingly strong candidate (p = 1.80x10 -4 vs. sample controls; p = 5.85x10 -19 vs. ExAC data; p = 4.9x10 -3 vs. NHLBI exome data). The mutant protein forms large aggregates in BPPV samples even at young ages, and affected subjects carrying this variant have an earlier onset of the condition than those without [average 44.0±14.0 (n = 16) versus 54.4±16.1 (n = 36) years old, p = 0.054]. In both human and mouse inner ear tissues, PCDHGA10 is expressed in ganglia, hair cells and vestibular transitional epithelia. Fluorescent RNA in situ hybridization using mouse inner ear tissues shows that expression increases with age. In summary, our data show that a variant in the PCDHGA10 gene may be involved in causing or aggravating some familial cases of recurrent idiopathic BPPV.

Primary biliary cirrhosis and osteoporosis: a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization study

Abstract:Background: Observational studies have identified a heightened risk of osteoporosis and fractures in patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). However, conclusive evidence establishing a causal relationship between the two, and a clear mechanism explaining this association, remains elusive. Methods: We conducted a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationship between PBC and osteoporosis. This analysis utilized five MR methods: inverse-variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted median, weighted mode, and simple mode. Sensitivity analyses were performed, employing various models and testing methods, to assess the impact of heterogeneity and pleiotropy on the results and to confirm their robustness. Results: A causal relationship between PBC and osteoporosis risk was established through IVW analysis (OR: 1.049, 95%CI: 1.017–1.082, P =0.002). Three other MR analyses corroborated these findings. Conversely, osteoporosis was not found to causally affect PBC risk, as evidenced by IVW analysis (OR: 0.941, 95%CI: 0.783–1.129, P =0.511). Across all MR analyses, no heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy was detected among the instrumental variables (IVs). Furthermore, the leave-one-out analysis indicated that no single SNP disproportionately influenced the results, affirming the reliability of the bidirectional MR findings. Conclusion: This study establishes a positive causal relationship between PBC and the risk of osteoporosis, while no definitive causal link was found from osteoporosis to PBC. These findings offer new insights and guidance for managing bone health in PBC patients.

Abstract:Objective The risk factors for residual dizziness (RD) after successful treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) are poorly characterized. We determined the risk factors for RD in patients with benign unilateral posterior semicircular canal paroxysmal positional vertigo (pc-BPPV) after successful treatment. Methods We conducted a prospective study of patients diagnosed with unilateral pc-BPPV between March 2015 and January 2017. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by dual-energy X-ray bone mineral densitometry. Participants underwent bithermal caloric testing (C-test) using videonystagmography and a canalith repositioning procedure (CRP). The occurrence of RD was the primary outcome. The participants underwent follow-up 1 week, 1 month, and 1 year after successful CRP, consisting of outpatient visits, questionnaires, and telephone interviews. Results We assessed 115 participants with unilateral pc-BPPV (31 men and 84 women) who were 53.2 ± 8.8 years old. RD occurred in 60 (52.2%) participants. The participants who experienced RD were older, had vertigo for longer before treatment, and were more likely to show a positive C-test and significant BMD loss. Conclusions We found that a significant reduction in BMD (T-score < −1 standard deviation), a positive C-test, and older age are independently associated with RD in patients with pc-BPPV after successful CRP.
Circulating levels of micronutrients and the risk of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: A Mendelian randomization study

Abstract:Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a typical vestibular disease characterized by recurrent episodes of vertigo. The role of micronutrients in BPPV pathogenesis has not been extensively studied, prompting this investigation into the relationship between circulating micronutrients and BPPV risk. This research aimed to explore the relationship between blood micronutrient levels and BPPV risk via Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis, a robust method for inferring causality from observational data. Methods: A total of 15 circulating micronutrients were assessed for their association with BPPV risk. MR analysis was conducted via the following methods: MR‒Egger, weighted median, simple model, inverse variance weighting (IVW), and weighted mode. Sensitivity analyses were performed to assess heterogeneity and pleiotropy. A multivariate MR analysis was also conducted, incorporating potential confounders such as trauma, chronic otitis media, hearing loss, peripheral atherosclerosis, ageing, and osteoporosis. Results: MR analysis revealed an obvious association between selenium and BPPV risk (OR 1.074, 95 % CI 1.005 to 1.148; P = 0.035). Folate was negatively related (OR 0.694, 95 % CI 0.501 to 0.962, P = 0.028) but was excluded because of inconsistent OR values across methods. Sensitivity analysis supported the IVW results, and there was no evidence of significant heterogeneity among the selenium-related instrumental variables included in the study, nor was horizontal pleiotropy detected among the instrumental variables. Multivariate MR analysis confirmed that selenium was an independent risk factor for BPPV (OR 1.22, 95 % CI 1.059 to 1.406, P = 0.006), with no significant associations observed for other micronutrients or exposure factors. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that blood selenium levels are positively associated with the risk of BPPV, suggesting a potential role for selenium in the pathogenesis of this disorder. These findings are robust to various sensitivity analyses and support the use of MR analysis to identify novel risk factors for BPPV. The identification of selenium as an independent risk factor for BPPV has implications for the development of preventive strategies and targeted interventions. It is necessary to analyse the biological mechanisms of this association and determine the therapeutic value of limiting selenium intake for BPPV to provide support for the treatment of such patients.

Investigating the role of Sirt1-modulated oxidative stress in relation to benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and Parkinson's disease

Abstract:Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most frequently encountered primary complaints in dizziness clinics. The incidence of BPPV has been proven to increase with age. The relationship between BPPV and another neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson's disease (PD), has not been previously discussed. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of BPPV and PD with oxidative stress. A total of 30,811 subjects participated in our cohort study. The study cohort comprised 5057 BPPV patients and a comparison cohort of 25,754 nonBPPV patients. SIRT1 axis gene expression was investigated in BPPV patient blood samples and a PD cell model of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-treated PC-12 cells to elucidate the potential in vitro and in vivo mechanisms of degeneration in PD and BPPV. Our data suggest that BPPV patients with histories of head injuries show a significantly higher hazard to develop subsequent PD (hazard ratio, 3.942; confidence interval, 1.523-10.205, p = 0.005). We also observed that oxidative status is increased in blood samples from patients with BPPV. Our in vitro study suggests that SIRT1 function is inhibited by oxidative stress, which thereby promotes 6-hydroxydopamine-induced cell death. We conclude that BPPV is independently associated with an increased risk of PD. This finding may be attributed to oxidative stress-mediated inhibition of SIRT1 expression levels.

Abstract:Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) (otolith disease) is the most common neurological and position change related vertigo, accounting for 17-20% of peripheral vertigo. BPPV occur in the elderly. The high incidence age for BPPC was 50 to 70 years and mostly in female. According to the different parts of the lesions, it is divided into anterior canal BPPV (AC-BPPV), posterior canal BPPV (PC-BPPV), horizontal canal BPPV (HC-BPPV). Studies have shown that the incidence of PC-BPPV was 86.36%, the incidence of HC-BPPV was 11.37%, the incidence rate of AC-BPPV was 2.27%. Treatment for PC-BPPV includes manual reduction, drug treatment, psychological treatment, and surgical treatment. Repositioning is the preferred method for the treatment of PC-BPPV with high effective rate and low risk. The mechanism is through the different changes of head position to make the otolith back to utricle. Many manual reduction methods have been reported in clinical treatment of PC-BPPV. With the increasing emphasis on the BPPV, a variety of new methods are being developed and designed.

Abstract:The pathophysiological mechanism underlying benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is related to free-floating debris/otoliths in the semicircular canal (canalolithiasis) or debris/otoliths attached to the cupula (cupulolithiasis). These debris/otoliths are considered to originally accumulate after detachment from the neuroepithelium of the utricular macula secondary to a type of degeneration. An idiopathic form, which is assumed to occur spontaneously, is diagnosed when the causative pathology is obscure. However, an association between various other systemic or inner ear conditions and BPPV has been reported, indicating the existence of secondary BPPV. This study was performed to present the first review of the pathology underlying BPPV following a complete PubMed/Medline search. In total, 1932 articles published from 1975 to 2018 were reviewed. The articles were classified according to 17 potentially causative factors (aging; migraine; Meniere’s disease; infection; trauma; idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss; sleeping habits; osteoporosis and vitamin D insufficiency; hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus; chronic head and neck pain; vestibule or semicircular canal pathology; pigmentation disorders; estrogen deficiency; neurological disorders; autoimmune, inflammatory, or rheumatologic disorders; familial or genetic predisposition; and allergy). A discussion of the underlying cause of BPPV for each factor is presented.

Factors Associated with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo: A Chinese Case-Control Study.

Abstract:Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common and most successfully treated vestibular disorders. However, there is a lack of predictive factors for BPPV in clinical practice. We aimed to explore several possible predictive factors for BPPV in the Chinese population.Material/Methods: We enrolled 240 patients with BPPV from Beijing Chaoyang Hospital between July 2013 and July 2016. Biochemical and hematological markers were obtained along with the history of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.Results: Serum uric acid (SUA) [279.0 +/- 84.7 vs. 331.0 +/- 82.7], hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) [5.75 +/- 1.17 vs. 6.61 +/- 1.00], albumin [38.1 +/- 3.71 vs. 40.9 +/- 4.1], and creatinine [68.4 +/- 19.3 vs. 81.5 +/- 24.1] were significantly lower in patients with BPPV compared with controls (P<0.05). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that lower levels of HbA1c and albumin were independently associated with BPPV (P<0.05), with odds ratio (OR) 0.680 (95% CI 0.551-0.839) and 0.338 (95% CI 0.190-0.603), respectively. However, the level of SUA was not independently related with BPPV [OR=0.999 (95% CI 0.991-1.006), P=0.713]. There were no significant differences between the parameters of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, blood routine examination, lipid profiles, homocysteine, pre-albumin, and blood urea nitrogen in patients with BPPV vs. controls (P>0.05).Conclusions: Lower levels of HbA1c and albumin were independently associated with BPPV. Although the level of SUA was lower in BPPV patients, SUA was not an independent risk factor for BPPV.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To confirm the possible relationships between serum level of uric acid (UA) and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).METHODS:A total of 87 patients with BPPV and 36 age- and gender-matched control subjects were recruited from our hospital between July 1, 2013 and July 1, 2014. All patients underwent a complete audio-vestibular test battery, such as Dix-Hallpike maneuver for posterior semicircular canal and supine roll test for horizontal semicircular canal. All risk factors such as the histories of heart and cerebral vascular diseases, and routine hematological and biochemical analyses were analyzed between two groups.RESULTS:No significant inter-group differences existed in age, gender, histories of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, coronary heart disease, smoking or drinking (P > 0.05). No significant differences existed between systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, ejection fraction, whole blood count, lipid profile, homocysteine, prealbumin and blood urea nitrogen in patients with BPPV compared with controls (P >0. 05). However, the values of UA (267 ± 86 vs 325 ± 75) µmol/L, hemoglobin ale (5.6 ± 1. 4 vs 6.5 ± 1. 0)%, albumin (36 ± 4 vs 40 ± 4) g/L and creatinine (72 ± 20 vs 81 ± 22) µmol/L were much lower in patients with BPPV versus controls (P < 0. 05). According to multiple Logistic regression model, the lower levels of hemoglobin ale and albumin were independently associated with BPPV (P <0. 05) with the odds ratio of 1. 473 (95% CI 1. 066 - 2. 037) and 1. 162 (95% CI 1. 025 - 1. 318), respectively. However, the level of UA was not independently correlated with the occurrence of BPPV [OR = 1. 005 (95% CI 1. 000 - 1. 011), P =0. 063].CONCLUSION:The lower levels of hemoglobin alc and albumin are independently associated with BPPV. Although the value of UA is lower in patients with BPPV versus controls, it is not an independent risk factor for BPPV. Due to limited patient data, further studies are needed to clarify the association in a larger sample size of different ethnic groups or longer follow ups.
