Abstract:Water ice is a unique material presenting intriguing physical properties, like negative thermal expansion and anomalous volume isotope effect (VIE). They arise from the interplay between weak hydrogen bonds and nuclear quantum fluctuations, making theoretical calculations challenging. Here, we employ the stochastic self-consistent harmonic approximation (SSCHA) to investigate how thermal and quantum fluctuations affect the physical properties of ice XI ab initio. Regarding the anomalous VIE, our work reveals that quantum effects on hydrogen are so strong to be in a nonlinear regime: when progressively increasing the mass of hydrogen from protium to infinity (classical limit), the volume firstly expands and then contracts, with a maximum slightly above the mass of tritium. We observe an anharmonic renormalization of about 10% in the bending and stretching phonon frequencies probed in IR and Raman experiments. For the first time, we report an accurate comparison of the low energy phonon dispersion with the experimental data, possible only thanks to high-level accuracy in the electronic correlation and nuclear quantum and thermal fluctuations, paving the way for the study of thermal transport in ice from first principles and the simulation of ice under pressure.

Insights into the structure of liquid water from nuclear quantum effects on density and compressibility of ice polymorphs

Abstract:Nuclear quantum effects lead to an anomalous shift of the volume of hexagonal ice; heavy ice has a larger volume than light ice. This anomaly in ice increases with temperature and persists in liquid water up to the boiling point. We study nuclear quantum effects on the density and compressibility of several ice-like structures and crystalline ice phases. By calculating the anisotropic contributions to the stain tensor, we analyze how the compressibility changes along different directions in hexagonal ice, and find that hexagonal ice is softer along the x-y plane than the z-direction. Furthermore, by performing ab initio density functional theory calculations with a van der Waals functional and with the quasiharmonic approximation, we find an anomalous isotope effect in the bulk modulus of hexagonal ice: heavy ice has a smaller bulk modulus than light ice. In agreement with the experiments, we also obtain an anomalous isotope effect for clathrate hydrate structure I. For the rest of the ice polymorphs, the isotope effect is: i) anomalous for ice IX, Ih, Ic, clathrate, and low density liquid-like amorphous ice; ii) normal at T=0 K and becomes anomalous with increasing temperature for ice IX, II, high density liquid-like amorphous ices, and ice XV; iii) normal for ice VIII up to the melting point. There is a transition from an anomalous isotope effect to a normal isotope effect for both the volume and bulk modulus, as the density (compressibility) of the structures increases (decreases). This result can explain the anomalous isotope effect in liquid water: as the compressibility decreases from melting point to the compressibility minimum temperature, the difference between the volumes of the heavy and light water rapidly decreases, but the effect stays anomalous up to the boiling temperature as the hydrogen bond network is never completely broken by fully filling all the interstitial sites.
Quantum effects in the H-bond symmetrization and in the thermodynamic properties of high pressure ice

Abstract:We investigate the structural and thermodynamic properties of high-pressure ice by incorporating quantum anharmonicity at a non-perturbative level. Quantum fluctuations reduce the critical pressure of the phase transition between phase VIII (with asymmetric H-bonds) and phase X (with symmetric H-bonds) by 65 GPa from its classical value of 116 GPa at 0K. Moreover, quantum effects make it temperature-independent over a wide temperature range (0K-300K), in agreement with experimental estimates obtained through vibrational spectroscopy and in striking contrast to the strong temperature dependence found in the classical approximation. The equation of state shows fingerprints of the transition in accordance with experimental evidence. Additionally, we demonstrate that, within our approach, proton disorder in phase VII has a negligible impact on the occurrence of phase X. Finally, we reproduce with high accuracy the 10 GPa isotope shift due to the hydrogen-to-deuterium substitution.

Dielectric Anomaly in Ice near 20 K; Evidence of Macroscopic Quantum Phenomena

Abstract:H2O is one of the most important substances needed in sustaining life; but yet not much is known about its ground state. Here, a previously unidentified anomaly is identified in the form of a minimum in the imaginary part of the dielectric constant with respect to temperature near 20 K while the real part remains monotonic. Isothermal dispersion and absorption measurements show coinciding results. For the case of heavy ice (D2O), no anomaly was identified confirming an apparent isotope effect. Concerted quantum tunneling of protons is believed to be the main cause behind the reported anomaly. Our findings identify another system that exhibits macroscopic quantum phenomena of which rarely occur in nature.

Isotope effects in ice Ih: A path-integral simulation

Abstract:Ice Ih has been studied by path-integral molecular dynamics simulations, using the effective q-TIP4P/F potential model for flexible water. This has allowed us to analyze finite-temperature quantum effects in this solid phase from 25 to 300 K at ambient pressure. Among these effects we find a negative thermal expansion of ice at low temperatures, which does not appear in classical molecular dynamics simulations. The compressibility derived from volume fluctuations gives results in line with experimental data. We have analyzed isotope effects in ice Ih by considering normal, heavy, and tritiated water. In particular, we studied the effect of changing the isotopic mass of hydrogen on the kinetic energy and atomic delocalization in the crystal, as well as on structural properties such as interatomic distances and molar volume. For D$_2$O ice Ih at 100 K we obtained a decrease in molar volume and intramolecular O--H distance of 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively, as compared to H$_2$O ice.

Quantum path integral simulation of isotope effects in the melting temperature of ice Ih

Abstract:The isotope effect in the melting temperature of ice Ih has been studied by free energy calculations within the path integral formulation of statistical mechanics. Free energy differences between isotopes are related to the dependence of their kinetic energy on the isotope mass. The water simulations were performed by using the q-TIP4P/F model, a point charge empirical potential that includes molecular flexibility and anharmonicity in the OH stretch of the water molecule. The reported melting temperature at ambient pressure of this model (T = 251 K) increases by 6.5+-0.5 K and 8.2+-0.5 K upon isotopic substitution of hydrogen by deuterium and tritium, respectively. These temperature shifts are larger than the experimental ones (3.8 K and 4.5 K, respectively). In the classical limit, the melting temperature is nearly the same as that for tritiated ice. This unexpected behavior is rationalized by the coupling between intermolecular interactions and molecular flexibility. This coupling makes the kinetic energy of the OH stretching modes larger in the liquid than in the solid phase. However the opposite behavior is found for intramolecular modes, which display larger kinetic energy in ice than in liquid water.

Abstract:It has been known since the pioneering work of Bernal, Fowler, and Pauling that common, hexagonal (Ih) water ice is the archetype of a frustrated material: a proton-bonded network in which protons satisfy strong local constraints (the ``ice rules'') but do not order. While this proton disorder is well established, there is now a growing body of evidence that quantum effects may also have a role to play in the physics of ice at low temperatures. In this paper, we use a combination of numerical and analytic techniques to explore the nature of proton correlations in both classical and quantum models of ice Ih. In the case of classical ice Ih, we find that the ice rules have two, distinct, consequences for scattering experiments: singular ``pinch points,'' reflecting a zero-divergence condition on the uniform polarization of the crystal, and broad, asymmetric features, coming from its staggered polarization. In the case of the quantum model, we find that the collective quantum tunneling of groups of protons can convert states obeying the ice rules into a quantum liquid, whose excitations are birefringent, emergent photons. We make explicit predictions for scattering experiments on both classical and quantum ice Ih, and show how the quantum theory can explain the ``wings'' of incoherent inelastic scattering observed in recent neutron scattering experiments [Bove et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 165901 (2009)]. These results raise the intriguing possibility that the protons in ice Ih could form a quantum liquid at low temperatures, in which protons are not merely disordered, but continually fluctuate between different configurations obeying the ice rules.

Nuclear Quantum Effects on the Electronic Structure of Water and Ice

Abstract:The electronic properties and optical response of ice and water are intricately shaped by their molecular structure, including the quantum mechanical nature of hydrogen atoms. In spite of numerous studies appeared over decades, a comprehensive understanding of the effect of the nuclear quantum motion on the electronic structure of water and ice at finite temperatures remains elusive. Here, we utilize molecular simulations that harness the efficiency of machine-learning potentials and many-body perturbation theory to assess the impact of nuclear quantum effects on the electronic structure of water and hexagonal ice. By comparing the results of path-integral and classical simulations, we find that including nuclear quantum effects leads to a larger renormalization of the fundamental gap of ice, compared to that of water, eventually leading to a comparable gap in the two systems, consistent with experimental estimates. Our calculations suggest that the quantum fluctuations responsible for an increased delocalization of protons in ice, relative to water, are a key factor leading to the enhancement of nuclear quantum effects on the electronic structure of ice.

Anomalous thermal transport across the superionic transition in ice

Abstract:Superionic ices with highly mobile protons within the stable oxygen sub-lattice occupy an important proportion of the phase diagram of ice and widely exist in the interior of icy giants and throughout the universe. Understanding the thermal transport in superionic ice is vital for the thermal evolution of icy planets. However, it is highly challenging due to the extreme thermodynamic conditions and dynamical nature of protons, beyond the capability of the traditional lattice dynamics and empirical potential molecular dynamics approaches. In this work, by utilizing the deep potential molecular dynamics approach, we investigate the thermal conductivity of ice-VII and superionic ice-VII" along the isobar of $p = 30\ \rm{GPa}$. A non-monotonic trend of thermal conductivity with elevated temperature is observed. Through heat flux decomposition and trajectory-based spectra analysis, we show that the thermally-activated proton diffusion in ice-VII and superionic ice-VII" contribute significantly to heat convection, while the broadening in vibrational energy peaks and significant softening of transverse acoustic branches lead to a reduction in heat conduction. The competition between proton diffusion and phonon scattering results in anomalous thermal transport across the superionic transition in ice. This work unravels the important role of proton diffusion in the thermal transport of high-pressure ice. Our approach provides new insights into modeling the thermal transport and atomistic dynamics in superionic materials.

Ab-initio study of structure and dynamics properties of crystalline ice

Abstract:We investigated the structural and dynamical properties of a tetrahedrally coordinated crystalline ice from first principles based on density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation with the projected augmented wave method. First, we report the structural behaviour of ice at finite temperatures based on the analysis of radial distribution functions obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. The results show how the ordering of the hydrogen bonding breaks down in the tetrahedral network of ice with entropy increase in agreement with the neutron diffraction data. We also calculated the phonon spectra of ice in a 3x1x1 supercell by using the direct method. So far, due to the direct method used in this calculation, the phonon spectra is obtained without taking into account the effect of polarization arising from dipole-dipole interactions of water molecules which is expected to yield the splitting of longitudinal and transverse optic modes at the Gamma-point. The calculated longitudinal acoustic velocities from the initial slopes of the acoustic mode is in a reasonable agreement with the neutron scatering data. The analysis of the vibrational density of states shows the existence of a boson peak at low energy of translational region a characteristic common to amorphous systems.

Abstract:Despite its simple molecular structure, water is still a mystery to scientists. For the atomic and molecular vibrational modes of ice, as is well known, there are two kinds of vibrations: intra-molecular O—H stretching vibration and H—O—H bending vibration within the molecules and three kinds of molecular spatial rotations. However, thirty years ago, a high flux inelastic neutron scattering experiment showed that there are two distinct characteristic peaks in the far-infrared molecular translational vibration region of many ice phases. The origins of these peaks have not been determined till now. In this work, based on the CASTEP code, a first-principles density functional theory plane wave programme, the vibrational spectra as well as the vibrational normal modes of a series of ice phases are investigated. Two kinds of intrinsic hydrogen bond vibrational modes are first found in hydrogen-ordered ice Ic. Then it is found to be a general rule among ice family. Based on the ideal model, we prove that the two vibrational modes can be classified as four-bond vibration and two-bond vibration. There are many coupling modes in-between due to tetrahedral structure deformation under high pressure. Besides, there are also some optical vibrational modes with lower energy in the translational region, such as cluster vibrations and inter-plane vibrations. In Ice VII/VIII and XV/VI, each of which consists of two sublattices, there exist non-hydrogen bond vibrations. These molecular translational vibrations can explain all the far-infrared vibrational spectrum of ice phase, which makes up the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle for the molecular vibration theory of ice. The two vibrational modes do not exist in liquid water due to the collapse of the rigid tetrahedral structure. Thus, a window remains for ice resonance absorption with minimum energy loss in water. This theory is expected to be applicable to industrial deicing, food thawing, gas hydrate mining, and biomolecule frozen molding, etc.

Abstract:The Bernal-Fowler ice rules stipulate that each water molecule in an ice crystal should form four hydrogen bonds. However, in extreme or constrained conditions, the arrangement of water molecules deviates from conventional ice rules, resulting in properties significantly different from bulk water. In this study, we employ machine learning-driven first-principles simulations to identify a new stabilization mechanism in nanoconfined ice phases. Instead of forming four hydrogen bonds, nanoconfined crystalline ice can form a quasi-one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded structure that exhibits only two hydrogen bonds per water molecule. These structures consist of strongly hydrogen-bonded linear chains of water molecules that zig-zag along one dimension, stabilized by van der Waals interactions that stack these chains along the other dimension. The unusual interplay of hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions in nanoconfined ice results in atypical proton behavior such as potential ferroelectric behavior, low dielectric response, and long-range proton dynamics.

Abstract:In 2020, experimental observations of a stable two-dimensional (2D) ice I structure on a gold substrate were reported. As an atomic-level material, 2D ice has potential applications in many fields. However, the vibrational spectra of 2D ice I, including its infrared (IR) absorption, Raman scattering, and inelastic neutron-scattering spectra, have not been collected, owing to the complexity of the experimental conditions required to do so. We used first-principle density functional theory calculations to model 2D ice I and proved that it can stably exist without a gold substrate. We also simulated the vibrational phonon density of states and the IR and Raman spectra of 2D ice I. The vibrational frequencies in the translational band of 2D ice I were lower than those of 3D ice, owing to the hydrogen bonds of the former being weaker than those of the latter. The dynamic process analysis of hydrogen bonds showed that the vibrational modes of 2D ice I are quite different with that of 3D ice showing a different vibrational spectrum.

Capturing the Nuclear Quantum Effects in Molecular Dynamics for Lattice Thermal Conductivity Calculations: Using Ice As Example

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) is a powerful (and the most viable) tool to compute the thermal conductivities of solid disordered materials. However, conventional classical MD fails to describe the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs), so it may give inaccurate results for light materials at low temperatures. While the importance of NQE has been widely acknowledged, yet we do not have a fully reliable method to account for NQE in the MD thermal conductivity calculations. In this work, we will investigate and analyze the performances of a number of path-integral-based quantum MD methods, using ordered ice as a test case. To establish the validity of these methods, we will compare the MD results with the lattice dynamics results, in both classical and quantum limits. Through such a comparison, we will show that methods such as ring polymer MD stand as a good approach for a complex solid with short phonon lifetimes but could be problematic when describing long-living acoustic phonons. In addition, we will show that the rigid water model, which is the state-of-the-art model in the studies of ice/water systems, fails to capture most of the NQEs in ice thermal conductivity. Neglecting librational and translational NQEs leads to essential errors, which clearly demonstrates the importance of a true quantum simulation method that treats all modes at a consistent quantum level.
Ice-Water Equilibrium in Nanoscale Confinement

Abstract:We show that 2D H2 NMR spectra enable valuable insights into the nature of an ice-water equilibrium in nanoscale confinement, which extends over a broad temperature range. In particular, 2D H2 NMR line-shape analysis allows us to determine the timescale on which the coexisting ice and water phases exchange molecules. For D2O in a silica nanopore with a diameter of 5.4 nm, we find that the residence time of a water molecule in either phase is characterized by an NMR exchange time of τX=5.7 ms at 220 K. Thus, the ice-water equilibrium is highly dynamic, which is an important aspect for an understanding of deeply cooled confined and, possibly, bulk waters. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.016201 © 2024 American Physical Society

High-density amorphous ice: A path-integral simulation

Abstract:Structural and thermodynamic properties of high-density amorphous (HDA) ice have been studied by path-integral molecular dynamics simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. Interatomic interactions were modeled by using the effective q-TIP4P/F potential for flexible water. Quantum nuclear motion is found to affect several observable properties of the amorphous solid. At low temperature (T = 50 K) the molar volume of HDA ice is found to increase by 6%, and the intramolecular O--H distance rises by 1.4% due to quantum motion. Peaks in the radial distribution function of HDA ice are broadened respect to their classical expectancy. The bulk modulus, B, is found to rise linearly with the pressure, with a slope dB/dP = 7.1. Our results are compared with those derived earlier from classical and path-integral simulations of HDA ice. We discuss similarities and discrepancies with those earlier simulations.

Abstract:Proton tunneling is believed to be nonlocal in ice, but its range has been shown to be limited to only a few molecules. Here, we measured the thermal conductivity of ice under pressure up to 50 GPa and found it increases with pressure until 20 GPa but decreases at higher pressures. We attribute this nonmonotonic thermal conductivity to the collective tunneling of protons at high pressures, supported by large-scale quantum molecular dynamics simulations. The collective tunneling loops span several picoseconds in time and are as large as nanometers in space, which match the phonon periods and wavelengths, leading to strong phonon scattering at high pressures. Our results show direct evidence of global quantum motion existing in high-pressure ice and provide a new perspective to understanding the coupling between phonon propagation and atomic tunneling. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.264101 © 2024 American Physical Society

Hidden force opposing ice compression

Abstract:Coulomb repulsion between the unevenly-bound bonding and nonbonding electron pairs in the O:H-O hydrogen-bond is shown to originate the anomalies of ice under compression. Consistency between experimental observations, density functional theory and molecular dynamics calculations confirmed that the resultant force of the compression, the repulsion, and the recovery of electron-pair dislocations differentiates ice from other materials in response to pressure. The compression shortens and strengthens the longer-and-softer intermolecular O:H lone-pair virtual-bond; the repulsion pushes the bonding electron pair away from the H+/p and hence lengthens and weakens the intramolecular H-O real-bond. The virtual-bond compression and the real-bond elongation symmetrize the O:H-O as observed at ~60 GPa and result in the abnormally low compressibility of ice. The virtual-bond stretching phonons (< 400 cm-1) are thus stiffened and the real-bond stretching phonons (> 3000 cm-1) softened upon compression. The cohesive energy of the real-bond dominates and its loss lowers the critical temperature for the VIII-VII phase transition. The polarization of the lone electron pairs and the entrapment of the bonding electron pairs by compression expand the band gap consequently. Findings should form striking impact to understanding the physical anomalies of H2O.
