Abstract:The increasing demand for food in the world has made sustainable agriculture practices even more important. Nanotechnology applications in many areas have also been used in sustainable agriculture in recent years for the purposes to improve plant yield, pest control, etc. However, ecotoxicology and environmental safety of nanoparticles must be evaluated before large-scale applications. This study comparatively explores the efficacy and fate of different iron oxide NPs (γ-Fe2O3-maghemite and Fe3O4-magnetite) on barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Various NP doses (50, 100, and 200 mg/L) were applied to the seeds in hydroponic medium for 3 weeks. Results revealed that γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 NPs significantly improved the germination rate (~37% for γ-Fe2O3; ~63% for Fe3O4), plant biomass, and pigmentation (P < 0.005). Compared to the control, the iron content of tissues gradually raised by the increasing NPs doses revealing their translocation, which is confirmed by VSM analysis as well. The findings suggest that γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 NPs have great potential to improve barley growth. They can be recommended for breeding programs as nanofertilizers. However, special care should be paid before the application due to their unknown effects on other living beings.

Nonlinear Ultrasounic Resonance Spectroscopy of Intact Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites

Abstract:The present study reports the influence of fiber orientation, laminate sequence and fabric type on the inherent nonlinearity of intact carbon fiber/epoxy composites using nonlinear resonant ultrasonic spectroscopy (NRUS) [1-2]. Fiber orientation of the CFRP samples were changed relative to the length of the sample. Since the fundamental flexural mode is excited, the properties of the composite along the length of the sample would influence the nonlinear response [3]. Two hypothesis were developed using the orientation results and theory of interlaminar stress. Additionally four different laminate sequences were also tested to study the influence of laminate sequence on the inherent nonlinear response. Finally the effect of fabric type was investigated by comparing the nonlinearity of woven fabric and continuous fabric [4]. For each case comparisons were made by capturing the frequency shifts, modal damping ratios, and higher harmonics. The hypotheses were tested using the NRUS results for the laminate sequence and fabric study. Conjunctures for physical interpretation were developed using these results.
Uptake and translocation of magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles and its impact on photosynthetic genes in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)

Abstract:This study investigates the fate and impact of iron oxide or magnetite (Fe3O4, ∼13 nm in size) nanoparticles (NPs) in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), a common crop cultivated around the world. Barley seedlings were grown in hydroponic culture for three weeks to include NPs (125, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/L). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques were used to assess their uptake and translocation. Photosynthesis marker genes were quantified by RT-qPCR. Results revealed that increasing doses of Fe3O4 NPs were gradually enhanced the plant growth up to 500 mg/L, which promoted the fresh weight (FW) respectively ∼19% and ∼88% for leaf and root tissues than the ones for control. No phytotoxic effect was recorded even at high NPs doses. NPs inclusion increased some phenological parameters such as chlorophyll, total soluble protein, number of chloroplasts, and dry weight. High NPs doses dramatically reduced the catalase activity and hydrogen peroxide content, suggesting a possible function of NPs as nanozyme in vivo. TEM observations showed that Fe3O4 NPs penetrated and internalized in the root cells. In leaves, they were mostly existed at the surrounding cell wall, suggesting their translocation from root to shoot without cellular penetration. Further analysis by using VSM confirmed the existence of Fe3O4 NPs in leaves which result in dramatic alterations of the photosystem genes (PetA, psaA, BCA and psbA). In conclusion, barley plants uptake and translocate Fe3O4 NPs, which promoted the plant growth probably due to the promoted gene expression and efficient photosynthetic activity.

Abstract:Nowadays Alternaria is considered one of the main fungi causing damage in cereal crop such barley. This work was designed to assess the potential role of silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) in enhancing barley's tolerance against A. alternata attack. For this purpose, twenty day-olds, seedlings were irrigated either with tap water or with SiO 2 NPs solutions at 20 and 200 ppm for one week. After that, different group of seedlings were exposed to fungus inoculation and the others serve as control. The results showed that the fungi attack reduced seedlings biomass, hydration status, transpiration, stomatal conductance, total antioxidant activity, and DPPH levels compared to non-inoculated seedlings. Meanwhile, there was an increase in total phenolic compounds and flavonoid contents. The application of SiO 2 NPs in absence of inoculation, resulted in an increase in seedling shoot length, shoot and root biomass, and water content at any NPs concentrations. Furthermore, when applied prior to inoculation at both concentrations (20 and 200 ppm), SiO 2 NPs mitigated the effects of pathogen attack by enhancing net CO 2 assimilation rate, internal CO 2 concentration, transpiration, and stomatal conductance and increasing total antioxidant activity and DPPH antioxidant profiles compared to inoculated plants. The shoot exhibited a significant increase in zinc, iron, manganese, and potassium with SiO 2 NPs at 200 ppm, regardless of the presence of fungi. The substrate's pH and conductivity remained unchanged compared to the control. However, there was a notable increase in nitrogen, manganese, potassium, and iron contents. On the other hand, levels of zinc and copper slightly decreased. This exploratory work highlights the protective role of SiO 2 NPs in barley seedlings under pathogen attack conditions possibly due to the Si-mediated protection against oxidative stress and photosynthesis modulation. Using SiO 2 NPs as a supplement offers a cost-effective and an eco-friendly and avenue for sustainable agriculture. They aid in nutrient delivery, help plants combat biotic stress, and enhance plant tolerance.

Abstract:There has been a growing concern with the environmental influences of nanomaterials due to recent developments in nanotechnology. This study investigates the impact and fate of hematite nanoparticles (α-Fe2O3 NPs) (∼14 nm in size) on a crop species, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). For this purpose, hematite NPs (50, 100, 200, and 400 mg/L) were hydroponically applied to barley at germination and seedling stages (three weeks). Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrophotometry (ICP-MS) along with vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques were used to track the NPs in plant tissues. The effects of NPs on the root cells were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal microscopy. Results revealed that α-Fe2O3 NPs significantly reduced the germination rate (from 80% in control to 30% in 400 mg/L), as well as chlorophyll (36-39%) and carotenoid (37%) contents. Moreover, the treatment led to a significant decline in the quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm). Leaf VSM analysis indicated a change in magnetic signal for NPs-treated samples compared with untreated ones, which is mostly attributed to the iron (Fe) ions incorporated within the leaf tissue. Besides, Fe content in the roots and leaf had gradually increased by the increasing doses of NPs, which was confirming NPs' translocation to the aerial parts. Microscopic observations revealed that α-Fe2O3 NPs altered root cell morphology and led to the injury of cell membranes. This study, in the light of our findings, shows that α-Fe2O3 NPs (∼14 nm in size) are taken up by the roots of the barley plants, and migrate to the plant leaves. Besides, NPs are phytotoxic for barley as they inhibit germination and pigment biosynthesis. This inhibition is probably due to the injury of the cell membranes in the roots. Therefore, the use of hematite NPs in agriculture and thereby their environmental diffusion must be addressed carefully.

Abstract:Engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are considered potential agents for agriculture as fertilizers and growth enhancers. However, their action spectrum differs strongly, depending on the type of NP, its concentrations, and plant species per se, ranging from growth stimulation to toxicity. This work aimed to investigate effects of iron oxide (Fe3O4) NPs on growth, photosynthesis, respiration, antioxidant activity, and leaf mineral content of wheat plants. Wheat seeds were treated with NP for 3 h and plants were grown in the soil at two light intensities, 120 and 300 μmol (photons) m-2·s-1, followed by physiological assessment at several time points. High NP treatment (200 and 500 mg·L-1) enhanced plant growth, photosynthesis and respiration, as well as increasing the content of photosynthetic pigments in leaves. This effect depended on both the light intensity during plant growth and the age of the plants. Regardless of concentration and light intensity, an effect of NPs on the primary photochemical processes was not observed. Seed treatment with NP also led to increased activity of ascorbate peroxidase and reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) content in roots and leaves. Treatment with Fe3O4 also led to noticeable increases in the leaf Fe, P, and K content. It is concluded that iron oxide (Fe3O4)-based NP could enhance plant growth by improving photosynthetic performance and the availability of Fe and P.
Individual and combinatorial application of nanosilica and carbon nanoparticles alleviate nickel stress in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.): Impacts on gene expression, AsA - GSH cycle, cellular fractionation, and proline metabolism

Abstract:Nanotechnology is grabbing great attention all over the world because of its stimulating use in numerous fields, and the nanosilica (nSi) and carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) application has been examined in various studies. Conversely, the nSi and CNPs combinatorial use is a new method and researched in limited literature. For this purpose, a pot experiment was conducted to examine various growth and biochemical parameters in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) under the toxic concentration of nickel (Ni) i.e., 200 mg kg-1 which were primed with combined application of two NPs of nSi at 3 mM and CNPs i.e., 200 μM respectively. The results showed that the Ni toxicity in the soil showed a significantly (P < 0.05) declined in the growth, gas exchange attributes, sugars, AsA-GSH cycle, cellular fractionation, proline metabolism in H. vulgare. However, Ni toxicity significantly (P < 0.05) increased oxidative stress biomarkers, enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants including their gene expression in H. vulgare. Although, the application of nSi and CNPs showed a significant (P < 0.05) increase in the plant growth and biomass, gas exchange characteristics, enzymatic and non-enzymatic compounds and their gene expression and also decreased the oxidative stress, and Ni uptake. In addition, individual or combined application of nSi and CNPs enhanced the cellular fractionation and decreases the proline metabolism and AsA-GSH cycle in H. vulgare. These results open new insights for sustainable agriculture practices and hold immense promise in addressing the pressing challenges of heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils.

Abstract:The purpose of this work was to study the effect of selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) on the biological and morphofunctional parameters of barley seeds ( Hordéum vulgáre L.) We used seeds of Hordéum vulgáre L. with reduced morphofunctional characteristics. For the experiment, Se NPs were synthesized and stabilized with didecyldimethylammonium chloride. It was found that Se NPs have a spherical shape and a diameter of about 50 nm. According to dynamic light scattering data, the average hydrodynamic radius of the particles was 28 ± 8 nm. It is observed that the nanoparticles have a positive ζ-potential (+ 27.3 mV). For the experiment, we treated Hordéum vulgáre L. seeds with Se NPs (1, 5, 10 and 20 mg/L). The experiment showed that treatment of Hordéum vulgáre L. seeds with Se NPs has the best effect on the length of roots and sprout at concentration of 5 mg/L and on the number and thickness of roots at 10 mg/L. Germinability and germination energy of Hordéum vulgáre L. seeds were higher in group treated with 5 mg/L Se NPs. Analysis of macrophotographs of samples, histological sections of roots and 3D visualization of seeds by microcomputing tomography confirmed the best effect at 5 mg/L Se NPs. Moreover, no local destructions were detected at concentrations > 5 mg/L, which is most likely due to the inhibition of regulatory and catalytic processes in the germinating seeds. the treatment of Hordéum vulgáre L. seeds with > 5 mg/L Se NPs caused significant stress, coupled with intensive formation of reactive oxygen species, leading to a reorientation of root system growth towards thickening. Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that Se NPs at concentrations > 5 mg/L had a toxic effect. The treatment of barley seeds with 5% Se NPs showed maximum efficiency in the experiment, which allows us to further consider Se NPs as a stimulator for the growth and development of crop seeds under stress and reduced morphofunctional characteristics.

Abstract:There is a growing demand for high quality and sustainable food in the world and this need falls within the context of the European Green Deal’s strategy “From Farm to Fork”. In order to achieve these outcomes, the use of modern and innovative technologies of plant production and protection is required. The use of nanoparticles (NPs) in agriculture and horticulture is an example of such technology. However, research on the effect of length of exposure to metal nanoparticles on seeds germination and seedlings development are limited in the literature. In our study, the effect of silver (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the seedling growth and biochemical response of rapeseed after 7, 14 and 21 days was analyzed. In the experiments, 0, 50 and 100 ppm concentrations of NPs were used in vitro. The level of photosynthetic pigments, anthocyanins as well as other stress parameters, such as free phenolic compounds, free sugars or H2O2, decreased due to the application of both AgNPs and AuNPs at the initial culture period; however, the differences were observed in the successive weeks of exposure. The parameters were increasing, irrespective of the kind of nanoparticles; however, as for the content of free sugars and free radicals, higher values were recorded due to the effect of AuNPs. Our results showed that length of plants exposure to NPs is very important factor modifying growth and final response of seedlings. Better understanding of its influence could speed up use of NPs in agriculture and horticulture for production of high-quality plant material (e.g., to seed priming, stimulation of seedlings’ growth and their protection), not contaminated with pesticides, fertilizers and mycotoxins.

Abstract:The use of nanotechnology to pre-treat crop seeds through seed treatments for enhancing their resistance to abiotic stresses is a promising and sustainable approach. This study demonstrates for the first time the potential of nickel ferrite (NiFe 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles (NPs) in improving the tolerance of maize ( Zea mays L.) exposed to drought and salt stress conditions. This study fills the current gap in understanding whether metal ferrite nanoparticles can mitigate abiotic stresses in crops, especially under hydric and saline stress. In this study, NiFe 2 O 4 NPs were used as seed pretreatments to enhance the resistance of maize ( Zea mays L.) experiencing drought and salt stress. We conducted a 7 day germination experiment and a 3-week seedling growth experiment to assess the impact of NiFe 2 O 4 NPs on key growth parameters such as seed germination, seedling vigor, root and shoot length, and biomass accumulation. The findings indicated that under drought conditions, 40 mg L −1 NiFe 2 O 4 NPs was the most effective concentration, leading to a substantial increase in the germination rate by 90%. Under salt stress, 20 mg L −1 was the optimal concentration, which resulted in a significant increase in seedling vigor by 521%, shoot length by 177%, and so on. In addition, NiFe 2 O 4 NPs exhibited peroxidase (POD)-like activity, which could increase the antioxidant capacity of maize seedlings, thereby enhancing their stress tolerance. These results offer a theoretical foundation for the use of NiFe 2 O 4 NPs in agricultural practices and highlight their unique potential for promoting plant resistance and sustainable agricultural practices. Although these results are promising, extensive research is needed to comprehensively elucidate the mechanisms through which NiFe 2 O 4 NPs enhance stress tolerance. Future research should explore the prolonged effects of NiFe 2 O 4 NPs on the growth of plants and yield, their potential environmental impacts, and their broader applicability. In addition, there is still a need to explore the interplay between NiFe 2 O 4 NPs and other biotic or abiotic factors to optimize their application in agricultural systems.

Abstract:Iron oxide nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3 NPs) have emerged as an innovative and promising method of iron application in agricultural systems. However, the possible toxicity of γ-Fe2O3 NPs and its uptake and translocation require further study prior to large-scale field application. In this study, we investigated uptake and distribution of γ-Fe2O3 NPs in corn (Zea mays L.) and its impacts on seed germination, antioxidant enzyme activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and chlorophyll content were determined. 20 mg/L of γ-Fe2O3 NPs significantly promoted root elongation by 11.5%, and increased germination index and vigor index by 27.2% and 39.6%, respectively. However, 50 and 100 mg/L γ-Fe2O3 NPs remarkably decreased root length by 13.5% and 12.5%, respectively. Additionally, evidence for γ-Fe2O3 NPs induced oxidative stress was exclusively found in the root. Exposures of different concentrations of NPs induced notably high levels of MDA in corn roots, and the MDA levels of corn roots treated by γ-Fe2O3 NPs (20-100 mg/L) were 5-7-fold higher than that observed in the control plants. Meanwhile, the chlorophyll contents were decreased by 11.6%, 39.9% and 19.6%, respectively, upon NPs treatment relative to the control group. Images from fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that γ-Fe2O3 NPs could enter plant roots and migrate apoplastically from the epidermis to the endodermis and accumulate the vacuole. Furthermore, we found that NPs mostly existed around the epidermis of root and no translocation of NPs from roots to shoots was observed. Our results will be highly meaningful on understanding the fate and physiological effects of γ-Fe2O3 NPs in plants.

Abstract:Properly understanding the fundamental interactions between engineered nanoparticles (NPs) and plants is crucial for nano-enabled agriculture. In this study, Fe and Fe3O4 (magnetite), which are naturally occurred nanosized crystals and minerals, were foliar applied to 4-week-old maize plants for 10 days to evaluate their impact on plant photosynthesis and growth. Hill reaction of isolated maize leaf chloroplasts was carried out to determine the performance of two Fe-based NPs on photosynthetic activities at cell level. Meanwhile, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) based metabolomics was used to explore the deep insight into the interaction between Fe-based NPs and maize plants. Results showed that maize leaf net photosynthesis rate and chlorophyll content were significantly increased by Fe NPs for 19.9% and 19.3%; and Fe3O4 NPs for 27.5% and 26.1%, respectively. Accordingly, plant biomass has been significantly increased by Fe and Fe3O4 NPs by 31.8% and 34.6%, respectively. Metabolomics revealed that both Fe-based NPs induced metabolic reprogramming in maize leaves. The biosynthesis of some compatible solutes and antioxidant compounds were inhibited. In addition, exposure to Fe-based NPs tentatively shut down some energy consuming pathways, such as photorespiration, alanine metabolism, branch chainamino acid biosynthesis. The trade-off of energy consuming pathways might be alternative explanation for the enhanced photosynthesis. The results of this study exhibited the promising potential for Fe-based NPs to be used in nano-enabled agriculture to promote plant growth. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), as representative magnetic materials, have been widely used in the industrial and biomedical sectors, and their environmental impacts must be evaluated for their sustainable use. In this study, the interactions between Fe3O4 NPs and maize plants were investigated by a combination of phenotypic and metabolic approaches. Maize plants (Zea mays) were grown in soil treated with Fe3O4 NPs at 0, 50 and 500 mg/kg for 4 weeks. Fe3O4 NPs had no impact on plant biomass or photosynthesis. However, root length of maize plant significantly increased, with decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) level, indicating the positive effects on root development and membrane integrity. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) revealed that Fe3O4 NPs resulted in a significant Fe accumulation in roots, instead of leaves. In addition, 500 mg/kg Fe3O4 NPs significantly promoted dehydrogenase enzyme activity by 84.9%. Metabolomics revealed that maize root metabolomes were re-programmed by Fe3O4 NPs exposure. Metabolic pathways associated with antioxidant and defence were inactivated by Fe3O4 NPs, indicating the protective role of Fe3O4 NPs for microbes and plant roots. Taken together, the results indicate a limited impact of environmental Fe3O4 NPs on plant growth. Taken together, the results of this study offer new insights into the molecular mechanisms by which maize responds to Fe3O4 NP exposure.

Abstract:Nano-enabled agriculture has emerged as an attractive approach for facilitating soil pollution mitigation and enhancing crop production and nutrition. In this study, we conducted a greenhouse experiment to explore the efficacy of silicon oxide nanoparticles (SiONPs) and iron oxide nanoparticles (FeONPs) in alleviating arsenic (As) toxicity in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and elucidated the underlying mechanisms involved. The application of SiONPs and FeONPs at 25, 50, and 100 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> soil concentration significantly reduced As toxicity and concurrently improved plant growth performance, including plant height, dry matter, spike length, and grain yield. The biochemical analysis showed that the enhanced plant growth was mainly due to stimulated antioxidative enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase, peroxidase) and reduced reactive oxygen species (electrolyte leakage, malondialdehyde, and hydrogen peroxide) in wheat seedlings under As stress upon NPs application. The nanoparticles (NPs) exposure also enhanced the photosynthesis efficiency, including the total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents as compared with the control treatment. Importantly, soil amendments with 100 mg kg<sup>-1</sup> FeONPs significantly reduced the acropetal As translocation in the plant root, shoot and grains by 74%, 54% and 78%, respectively, as compared with the control treatment under As stress condition, with relatively lower reduction levels (i.e., 64%, 37% and 58% for the plant root, shoot and grains, respectively) for SiONPs amendment. Overall, the application of NPs especially the FeONPs as nanoferlizers for agricultural crops is a promising approach towards mitigating the negative impact of HMs toxicity, ensuring food safety, and promoting future sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:Root-to-shoot translocation of nanoparticles (NPs) is a matter of interest due to their possible unprecedented effects on biota. Properties of NPs, such as structure, surface charge or coating, and size, determine their uptake by cells. This study investigates the size effect of iron oxide (Fe3O4) NPs on plant uptake, translocation, and physiology. For this purpose, Fe3O4 NPs having about 10 and 100 nm in average sizes (namely NP10 and NP100) were hydroponically subjected to barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in different doses (50, 100, and 200 mg/L) at germination (5 days) and seedling (3 weeks) stages. Results revealed that particle size does not significantly influence the seedlings’ growth but improves germination. The iron content in root and leaf tissues gradually increased with increasing NP10 and NP100 concentrations, revealing their root-to-shoot translocation. This result was confirmed by vibrating sample magnetometry analysis, where the magnetic signals increased with increasing NP doses. The translocation of NPs enhanced chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, suggesting their contribution to plant pigmentation. On the other hand, catalase activity and H2O2 production were higher in NP10-treated roots compared to NP100-treated ones. Besides, confocal microscopy revealed that NP10 leads to cell membrane damages. These findings showed that Fe3O4 NPs were efficiently taken up by the roots and transported to the leaves regardless of the size factor. However, small-sized Fe3O4 NPs may be more reactive due to their size properties and may cause cell stress and membrane damage. This study may help us better understand the size effect of NPs in nanoparticle-plant interaction.

Abstract:In recent years, nanotechnology has shown promising potential to enhance sustainable agriculture. Besides their use as antifungal and antimicrobial agents, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are the most widespread nanomaterials and are found in a capacious range of agrocommercial products. This study was designed to investigate the responses of morphophysiological characteristics in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) to biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles. Spherical shapes with 8–20 nm size AgNPs at different concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mg/L) were applied to barley plants in a hydroponic system. Following 7 days of sowing, the growth performance, chlorophyll contents, oxidative damage, and the activity level of antioxidant enzymes were quantified in different parts of the plant. The results indicated a remarkable boost in the growth performance and chlorophyll contents of barley plants up to a concentration of 150 mg/L. Interestingly, the levels of proline, lipid peroxidation, enzymes; superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), (APX), and (GR) activities were enhanced significantly in response to all AgNPs treatments. In general, the application of AgNPs substantially improved the growth and related morphophysiological attributes in barley. Our results provide new insights with respect to the effects of AgNPs on barley growth and their potential applications in increasing the performance of other crop species.

Response difference of transgenic and conventional rice (Oryza sativa) to nanoparticles (γFe₂O₃)

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) are an increasingly common contaminant in agro-environments, and their potential effect on genetically modified (GM) crops has been largely unexplored. GM crop exposure to NPs is likely to increase as both technologies develop. To better understand the implications of nanoparticles on GM plants in agriculture, we performed a glasshouse study to quantify the uptake of Fe2O3 NPs on transgenic and non-transgenic rice plants. We measured nutrient concentrations, biomass, enzyme activity, and the concentration of two phytohormones, abscisic acid (ABA) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Root phytohormone inhibition was positively correlated with Fe2O3 NP concentrations, indicating that Fe2O3 had a significant influence on the production of these hormones. The activities of antioxidant enzymes were significantly higher as a factor of low Fe2O3 NP treatment concentration and significantly lower at high NP concentrations, but only among transgenic plants. There was also a positive correlation between the treatment concentration of Fe2O3 and iron accumulation, and the magnitude of this effect was greatest among non-transgenic plants. The differences in root phytohormone production and antioxidant enzyme activity between transgenic and non-transgenic rice plants in vivo suggests that GM crops may react to NP exposure differently than conventional crops. It is the first study of NPs that may have an impact on GM crops, and a realistic significance for food security and food safety.
Effect of Biofertilizer and Nano-Fe Oxide Foliar Application on Alleviation of Water Deficit in Yield and Some Physico-Chemical Properties of Barley

Abstract:The use of biological systems and nano-micronutrients are gaining increased attention since they are more ecofriendly on plant growth under water stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the response of yield, physiological, and chemical characteristics of barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) to water deficit, biofertilizers and iron Nano-oxide in the field condition. Treatments were included biofertilizers [application of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi (AMF), PGPR + AM-fungi and not application as control]; nutrition with nano-iron oxide (control, application of 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 g/L) and irrigation levels [normal irrigation, moderate and severe water limitation]. The results showed that water limitation caused a decrease in SPAD (Soil Plant Analysis Development), F v / F m , relative water content, and grain yield of barley, whereas electrical conductivity, proline, soluble sugars, and enzyme activities increased. Combined interactions between 0.9 g/L nano-Fe oxide with AM-fungi + PGPR ameliorated adverse effects by enhancing RWC and proline, which might result from of lower electrical conductivity. The highest proline was detected in plants exposed to the highest nano-Fe oxide and mycorrhiza + Azospirillum application, at all irrigation levels. Catalase, peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase activities increased by 44.7, 105.3, and 107.5% in plants treated with mycorrhiza and PGPR under severe water limitation. Iron deficiency induced several changes in catalase and peroxidase enzymes and reduced their activities under water deficit. In severe water-stressed plants, the application of AM-fungi and PGPR caused an increase in grain yield by 10.35%. Spraying of 0.9 g/L nano-Fe oxide and application of mycorrhiza + Azospirillum could be suitable for barley growth and production in semi-arid areas.

Abstract:In July 2015, Marni Sommer and colleagues published "Comfortably, Safely, and Without Shame: Defining Menstrual Hygiene Management as a Public Health Issue," hereafter "Defining MHM," in American Journal of Public Health . The authors discuss that growing interest in the gender gap in education raised awareness about girls’ obstacles to managing menstruation [5] , especially in low-income countries. Increased focus on MHM pushed menstruation [5] to be redefined as a public issue rather than a private one. That transition made MHM the responsibility of national governments instead of just the responsibility of young girls, because it became more widely recognized that girls could only appropriately manage menstruation [5] if they had access to the necessary resources through public infrastructure. "Defining MHM" outlines how defining MHM as a public health issue brought much-needed attention to the obstacles to MHM young girls face and emphasizes that other underrepresented public health issues could use similar tactics as the MHM movement to gain global attention and funding. Menstruation, also called a period, is a process in which endometrial tissue, or tissue lining the inside of the uterus [6] , and blood are expelled from the uterus [6] through the vagina [7] every twenty-eight days, though every twenty-one to forty days is also normal. Abstract:Fe-based nanoparticles (Fe-based NPs) have great potential as a substitute for traditional Fe-fertilizer; however, their environmental risk and impact on plant growth are not fully understood. In this study, we compared the physiological impacts of three different Fe-based NP formulations: zero-valent iron (ZVI), Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 NPs, on hydroponic rice after root exposure for 2 weeks. Fe-normal (Fe(+)) and Fe-deficiency (Fe(-)) conditions were compared. Results showed that low dose (50 mg L-1) of ZVI and Fe3O4 NPs improved the rice growth under Fe(-) condition, while Fe2O3 NPs did not improve plant growth and caused phytotoxicity at high concentration (500 mg L-1). Under Fe(+) conditions, none of the Fe-based NPs exhibited positive effects on the rice plants with plant growth actually being inhibited at 500 mg L-1 evidenced by reduced root volume and leaf biomass and enhanced oxidative stress in plant. Under Fe(-) condition, low dose (50 mg L-1) of ZVI NPs and Fe3O4 NPs increased the chlorophyll content by 30.7% and 26.9%, respectively. They also alleviated plant stress demonstrated by the reduced oxidative stress and decreased concentrations of stress related phytohormones such as gibberellin and indole-3-acetic acid. Low dose of ZVI and Fe3O4 NPs treatments resulted in higher Fe accumulation in plants compared to Fe2O3 NPs treatment, by down-regulating the expression of IRT1 and YSL15. This study provides significant insights into the physiological impacts of Fe-based NPs in rice plants and their potential application in agriculture. ZVI and Fe3O4 NPs can be used as Fe-fertilizers to improve rice growth under Fe-deficient condition, which exist in many rice-growing regions of the world. However, dose should be carefully chosen as high dose (500 mg L-1 in this study) of the Fe-based NPs can impair rice growth.
