Abstract:The state-owned power Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), a monopoly market in charge of producing, distributing, and wholesaling power, is the focal point of Thailand's electricity market. Although the government has encouraged people to install on-grid solar panels to sell electricity as producers and retail consumers, the price mechanism, i.e., purchasing price and selling prices, is still unilaterally determined by the government. Therefore, we are interested in studying the case where blockchain can be used as a free trading platform. Without involving buying or selling from the government, this research presents a model of fully traded price mechanisms. Based on the study results of the double auction system, data on buying and selling prices of electrical energy in Thailand were used as the initial data for the electricity peer-to-peer free-trading model. Then, information was obtained to analyze the trading price trends by using the law of demand and supply in addition to the principle of the bipartite graph. The price trend results agree well with those of price equilibrium equations. Therefore, we firmly believe that the model we offer can be traded in a closed system of free-trade platforms. In addition, the players in the system can help to determine the price trend that will occur according to various parameters and will cause true fairness in the sustainable electricity supply chain industry in Thailand.

Abstract:Distributed power generation systems based on clean energy experience a large development worldwide. However, existing centralized power trading models cannot support direct transactions between distributed power generation systems and power consumers. Existing centralized power trading models suffer from multi-agent untrustworthiness and risk of data tampering. In addition, the direct transactions involve a large number of producers and consumers, thus requiring high efficiency of transaction processing in power trading models. To tackle with the problems, we propose a weakly centralized power trading model based on consortium blockchains in this paper. The trading model facilitate the power trading process by using smart contracts on consortium blockchains. In addition, we propose an approach based on the Hotelling theory to determine the pricing for transaction in our power trading model. The experimental results show that our power trading model provides a stable throughput as the request rate of transactions increases. The power trading model proposed in this paper is more practical than those based on public blockchains.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading allows direct interactions among participants without centralized resource integration. Therefore, P2P energy trading is suitable for local energy transactions among small scale consumers to promote the consumption of renewable energy localized. Whereas, for electricity commodity, system operation reliable and security is a critical and inevitable problem when designing a P2P energy transaction market. For this consideration, a novel P2P transaction model coordinating consumers' home energy management with system voltage regulation problem is proposed to consist the profits seeking purpose of consumers with the system operation requirements. The proposed P2P transaction model solves consumer-utility maximized energy trading problem with network security operation constraints. An alternating direction method of multiplier (ADMM) based distributed algorithm is proposed to protect the privacy of consumers. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed model is verified through a simulation on a modified 9-bus low voltage network.

Abstract:Thailand’s current energy trading system is an Enhanced Single Buyer (ESB), a market monopoly by a single buyer. It will produce and distribute electricity to service providers in each area, enabling them to distribute services to consumers. In terms of the consumer aspect, it is necessary to purchase electricity from only one seller, and it is not possible to choose the manufacturer independently. Since the price mechanism is not competitive, the market price is mainly determined by a single buyer. Meanwhile, alternative energy power generation technology has progressed. Anyone can become a power producer using wind power or solar energy. People can easily produce electricity to use in their households. Besides, residual energy from use will be sold only to the ESB. However, there is a selling restriction because there is only one buyer. Importantly, Blockchain technology can be applied to enable independent electricity trading. In other words, called peer-to-peer (P2P) trading, the Thai government has policies to promote P2P trading. However, there are not many systems supporting P2P energy trading since P2P trading is still in the beginning stages of the Pilot Project. In this study, the researchers have presented a P2P Power Trading Model using Blockchain technology. This research presents a system with efficiency and simplicity. Also, there are other technology highlights such as IoT, Lora, and Electronic Double Auction. The researcher has designed, implemented, and tested it for actual electrical power trading. It can prove to be traded according to the designed test cases. Importantly, we are truly confident that this research will benefit those interested in developing real-world applications. This research can also be used as an alternative to the traditional power purchase and sale system.

Abstract:Due to the developing of renewable energy and the Internet of things (IoT) technology, these two key drivers will accelerate the developing new system of energy exchanged market. From this chance, refer to the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading concept, both prosumers and consumers will have authorization for exchanging their energy with each other. Prosumers and consumers can buy normal or renewable energy from the grid. The surplus energy of prosumers can be sold to the grid. The expansion of prosumers generates the chances of having more decentralized energy market. This study proposes reviewing the Peer-to-Peer energy trading concept that is essential to illustrate the recent approaches, challenges, and development trends especially for Thailand. Furthermore, this paper also introduces a Peer-to-Peer energy trading model, development trends, challenges and opportunities based on related pilot projects, regulations and policy of each stakeholder such as government, electric utility and private sector.
A Decentralized P2P Electricity Market Model for Microgrids

Abstract:Inspired by the online peer-to-peer (P2P) goods trading that has become increasingly popular in the recent years, in this paper we propose a decentralized P2P electricity marketing mechanism for a microgrid (MG) consisting of networked prosumer (consumers with distributed generation capability) clusters by incorporating Blockchain technology and Smart Contracts (SC). Our proposed electricity marketing mechanism is a two-level hierarchical one: In the upper level, the aggregators (AGGs) cooperate with each other and in the lower level, the local PRs maximize their financial profits via P2P energy trading. This mechanisms potentially results in price of anarchy instances in which the targets of the two level players will be contradictory. To address this issue, we assume that there exists a single universal cost function for both levels of the game. In our simulations, we evaluate the performance of our proposed P2P electricity marketing mechanism in maximizing the self-sufficiency of the microgrid and minimizing the side effects of the discriminatory pricing.
AC Network-Constrained Peer-to-Peer Electricity Market Model in Low-voltage Power Distribution Networks

Abstract:The rapid growth of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and demand response in modern power grids calls for decentralized electricity trading mechanisms to effectively induce and coordinate responses from massive DERs and load entities. This paper proposes a fully decentralized peer-to-peer (P2P) distribution electricity trading mechanism backboned by a modified version of Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). Comparing with the state-of-the-art P2P electricity markets, the proposed electricity trading mechanism comprehensively incorporates power network constraints formulated by an alternating current power flow model. In the proposed method, nodal voltages are designed as the only public variables shared among participants. Privacy of each participant is thus sufficiently preserved without exposing the bid data to the others. Meanwhile, the proposed P2P method can also ensure the global optimality of social welfare in electricity transactions. Comprehensive case studies are carried out using the IEEE 33-node distribution system to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of proposed P2P electricity trading mechanism. The results indicate that the proposed model can efficiently integrates network constraints in the market clearing process while maintaining computational performance, ensuring stable convergence regardless of distribution system congestion. The proposed P2P electricity market can achieve global maximization of social welfare, with a relative difference of no more than 5.0% compared to the conventional centralized market. Even in worst-case scenarios, the relative difference remains within 7.32%. Meanwhile, the method accurately accounts for network losses, guaranteeing the feasibility of trading plans within the physical network. © 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:With the development of smart home energy management technology, prosumers are endowed with increased initiative in peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions, bringing new potential for cost savings. In this study, a novel strategic P2P energy trading framework is proposed considering the impact of network constraints on personal transaction strategies. Prosumers can estimate the allowed power injection before engaging in the P2P energy trading, which is solved in a distributed manner based on the sharing form alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm. To quantify the network usage cost for each prosumer and promote local transactions among prosumers at the same bus, a modified continuous double auction (CDA) matching algorithm is proposed including a transaction fee. An adaptive aggressiveness-based bidding strategy is generated considering the risk of uncertainty in real-time energy delivery amount under the limitations of the distribution network. The proposed strategic P2P energy trading framework is tested with the IEEE 37-bus distribution network and it is effective in creating profits for prosumers and supporting distribution network operations.

Abstract:Single Buyer (SB) model has gained traction in many Southeast Asia, Middle Eastern, and North African countries for its blend of centralisation and controlled competition. The semi-liberalised regulatory environment has hindered the integration of cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP) as a prosumer within the electricity value chain, despite its pivotal role in enhancing energy efficiency. There is a disconnection in the existing literature as electric supply configurations and enablement of peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading are individually studied. There also lacks the studies addressing electricity as a special commodity and its compatibility with the market. This paper bridges the research gaps by proposing a P2P energy trading market framework that integrates decentralised finance (DeFi) instruments and a cooperative game model. Malaysia, which implements the SB model in its electric supply structure, is selected for the case study. The comprehensive framework develops (1) a stableswap hybrid function automated market maker (HFMM) decentralised exchange (DEX) for P2P trading, (2) a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) optimisation model to determine the optimal operational strategy with minimised total annualised cost (TAC) of the system, and (3) an allocation scheme based on a cooperative game model to gauge the individual and coalitional cost savings allocations. Overall, this work presents a novel approach to addressing the challenges with innovating the SB model, while also fostering competitions among prosumers. The SB structure of Malaysia is briefly inspected, and the proposed framework is expected to contribute to the growth of macro-level CHP integration in the nation's energy planning.

Abstract:The multi-microgrid structure is emerging as one of the most promising concept for future distribution systems to provide resilience and independence energy operation with the energy exchange of other entities. In the distribution system, all microgrid owners and other stakeholders are benefited by sharing the locally generated energy with the adjacent microgrid entities with the help of energy trading process. The peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading is one of the best suitable energy-trading method for multi-microgrid systems because of the absence of third-party entity. This paper proposes a hierarchical P2P energy trading model with the incorporation of an energy management scheme for multi-microgrid systems to provide efficient and effective results in the energy trading market. The proposed model is applied to a typical multi-microgrid community system to show the economic benefits of various microgrid stakeholders. The different case studies have been performed in the result analysis to show the impact of energy management scheme on the P2P energy-trading model. From the simulation results, it is evident that the implementation of energy management scheme reduces the operation cost of all microgrids together in the community area by 28.38% in scenario 1, 38.86% in scenario 2, and 39.21% in scenario 3 respectively. The overall result analysis shows that the proposed hierarchical P2P model with the energy management integration can provide the better cost reduction when compared to other scenarios, and also the total load demand is reduced by 29.51%, the renewable energy utilization is improved by 22.39% within the multi-microgrid community system.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading is expected to be emerged as a new energy management paradigm that allows the transaction of energy from one prosumer to another prosumer without any dependency on a central controller. In Malaysia, first pilot test of P2P trading has been conducted recently, which exclusively participated by industrial prosumers and commercial consumers only. In order to investigate the impact of P2P energy trading to Malaysia market, this paper proposes an auction-based two-stage P2P trading market-clearing strategy, for multi-cities and intra-city in Malaysia. A motivational game theory-based price scheme is presented to ensure an unbiased market operation, to maximize the saving and payoff for each prosumer, at the same time benefits the power utility company. The proposed two-stage market clearing model is solved by Linear Programming optimization approach. A realistic representation of P2P trading in Malaysia is constructed and tested out under multi-cities and intra-city energy trading test cases. Comparison between the proposed P2P energy trading with existing solar generation net metering scheme is also presented. The numerical results indicate the viability and potential of motivational game theory based P2P trading in future Malaysia transactive energy market.

An electric power trading framework for smart residential community in smart cities

Abstract:This study proposes a multi‐agent‐based framework for Peer‐to‐Peer (P2P) power trading in a locality electricity market (LEM) for self‐interested smart residential prosumers. In LEM, prosumers may sell (buy) their excess generation (demand) at a profitable market prices compared to utility prices to achieve a win–win outcome. In LEM, three agents namely locality electricity trading system (LETS), utility and prosumer act together to achieve P2P power trading in a day‐ahead market. LETS computes the internal market prices employing any one of the market‐clearing mechanisms and broadcasts it to the prosumers. Prosumers optimise the generation‐demand schedule for the next day using residential energy management and trading system to achieve minimum electricity bill. The performance of the proposed framework is validated through different case studies on a residential locality with ten prosumers. The simulation is carried out using MATLAB parallel computation tool box and the load data is collected from the residential locality of National Institute of Technology Tiruchirappalli, India. It is evident from the simulation results that all the participants are economically benefited by P2P power trading. It is also found that the SDR mechanism in P2P outperforms and reduces the locality electricity bill by 27–68% under different operating conditions.
Decentralized P2P Trading based on Blockchain for Retail Electricity Markets

Abstract:This paper introduces peer to peer (P2P) trading mechanisms based on decentralized Blockchain to facilitate retail electricity market for ever-increasing distributed energy resources (DERs). The Blockchain network supports fast and secure retail trading among DERs and facilitates a sustainable local P2P trading platform. In this decentralized Blockchain architecture no single entity or organization has control over the entire system rather all users collectively maintain control. The effectiveness of the proposed automated market design and optimization is simulated using different use case scenarios in an open source Blockchain Simulator and MATLAB. The results show the efficacy of the trading mechanism in achieving demand response through strategies such as peak load shaving, load shifting, and integration of DERs.

The mechanism classifies peers in all communities on an hourly basis depending on their electricity surplus or deficit, facilitating electricity exchange between sellers and buyers. Moreover, communities engage in energy exchange not only within and between themselves but also with the grid. Electric power systems are currently undergoing a transformation towards a decentralized paradigm by actively involving prosumers, through the utilization of distributed multi‐energy sources. This research introduces a fully decentralized multi‐community peer‐to‐peer electricity trading mechanism, which integrates iterative auction and pricing methods within local electricity markets. The mechanism classifies peers in all communities on an hourly basis depending on their electricity surplus or deficit, facilitating electricity exchange between sellers and buyers. Moreover, communities engage in energy exchange not only within and between themselves but also with the grid. The proposed mechanism adopts a fully decentralized approach known as the alternating direction method of multipliers. The key advantage of this approach is that it eliminates the need for a supervisory node or the disclosure of private information of the involved parties. Furthermore, this study incorporates the flexibility provided by residential heating systems and energy storage systems into the energy scheduling of some prosumers. Case studies illustrate that the proposed multi‐community peer‐to‐peer electricity trading mechanism effectively enhances local energy balance. Specifically, the proposed mechanism reduces average daily electricity costs for individual prosumers by 63% compared to scenarios where peer‐to‐peer electricity trading is not employed.

Abstract:With the increasing deployment of renewable energy sources, peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading has recently garnered considerable attention. Many studies have investigated P2P energy trading between prosumers without considering the existing main grid. However, integrating the P2P energy trading of renewable energy in microgrids into the existing systems is a key measure to meet the requirements of energy policy and complement the existing systems. Thus, we propose a decentralized P2P energy trading model to encourage and manage energy transactions among prosumers in a grid-connected microgrid network with photovoltaic systems. Each peer, as a prosumer in the network, forms relationships in which an agent only needs to communicate and negotiate with its neighbors through communication layer to reach an optimal solution for P2P trading in a decentralized manner without requiring any central authority. In our proposed P2P energy trading model, prosumers with demand response availability optimize their objectives by maximizing social welfare and minimizing costs while considering carbon emissions and transaction costs. The proposed model is completely decentralized, privacy-preserving, and scalable by effectively applying a distributed alternating direction method of multipliers. A detailed case study considering a group of eight prosumers is presented to demonstrate the performance and superiority of the proposed P2P energy-trading system. Considering the global convergence criterion, prosumers achieved a maximum total social welfare while minimizing both the energy cost from the grid and costs related to trading with other prosumers.

Abstract:<p>With the rapid development of distributed electricity generation technologies such as solar photovoltaics, peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading is attracting incremental attention due to the pursuit of decentralized energy autonomy and further economic benefits. The study presented in this paper aims to gain a better understanding of the community P2P electricity trading, including influence of trading strategies, determinants of trading quantity and price, and further factors affecting improvement in community energy welfare. The market mechanism is determined based on the discriminatory continuous double auction, followed by simulations of the trading process in well-designed cases. Results show that P2P trading price and quantity depend on variation of the supply–demand ratio during each trading period, by which in the absence of complex trading strategies and learning abilities, profits are able to be effectively and fairly allocated among participants. For a given community, the total profits that could be obtained from P2P electricity trading are influenced by many factors, and the key is to make those "ineffective supply" available in the P2P market again, through active energy management solutions on all residents rather than focusing only on prosumers' self-consumption in the past. The ensuing results make significant sense as regards better understanding both the benefits and limitations of P2P electricity trading in residential communities or other similar scenes, thus helping for guiding practical implementation.</p>

Abstract:This study explores peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading, emphasizing not just the export and consumption, but also the feasible physical supply of electricity and the use of distribution network assets. Building on a transaction-oriented dynamic power flow tracing model, a novel P2P market architecture is proposed. This architecture integrates the electricity market with the power network, considering technical constraints, network losses, and asset usage. The network is segmented into potential markets using second-order cone programming (SOCP), with an optimization problem introduced for loss-allocation. This problem merges network physical analysis and variable outputs from distributed energy resources (DERs). A graph-based P2P electricity trading model is designed to determine optimal transaction cost allocation and maximize benefits for both DERs and consumers. A case study on a modified IEEE 33-node test feeder substantiates the benefits of this market structure, demonstrating increased revenues for DERs and reduced bills for consumers compared to traditional feed-in-tariffs.

Abstract:The transfer of market power in electric generation from utilities to end-users spurred by the diffusion of distributed energy resources necessitates a new system of settlement in the electricity business that can better manage generation assets at the grid-edge. A new concept in facilitating distributed generation is peer-to-peer energy trading, where households exchange excess power with neighbors at a price they set themselves. However, little is known about the effects of peer-to-peer energy trading on the sociotechnical dynamics of electric power systems. Further, given the novelty of the concept, there are knowledge gaps regarding the impact of alternative electricity market structures and individual decision strategies on neighborhood exchanges and market outcomes. This study develops an empirical agent-based modeling (ABM) framework to simulate peer-to-peer electricity trades in a decentralized residential energy market. The framework is applied for a case study in Perth, Western Australia, where a blockchain-enabled energy trading platform was trialed among 18 households, which acted as prosumers or consumers. The ABM is applied for a set of alternative electricity market structures. Results assess the impact of solar generation forecasting approaches, battery energy storage, and ratio of prosumers to consumers on the dynamics of peer-to-peer energy trading systems. Designing an efficient, equitable, and sustainable future energy system hinges on the recognition of trade-offs on and across, social, technological, economic, and environmental levels. Results demonstrate that the ABM can be applied to manage emerging uncertainties by facilitating the testing and development of management strategies.

Abstract:With the growing penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) in distribution systems, the traditional utility dominated tariff-based business model may no longer meet the need for further development. As a result, the transformation from the traditional tariff-based business model to the emerging peer-to-peer energy trading model has been acknowledged by researchers and policy makers. In this paper, a two-stage peer-to-peer energy trading model is proposed while considering the role of the utility. Specifically, energy transactions between buyers and sellers are optimized in the first stage; the cleared transactions are submitted to the utility for approval in the second stage, which solves a transaction approval model to verify the transactions from the perspective of secure system operations. Indeed, certain transactions may be disapproved to ensure that all network constraints, such as voltage and line flow limitations, are satisfied. In addition, a comprehensive trading tariff is designed to recover the hidden costs of the utility, such as those associated with network usage, system losses, and ancillary service provision. A modified 33-bus distribution system is adopted to verify the proposed model.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive study on the impacts of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy markets on distribution systems, specifically focusing on voltage, power loss, and congestion. While P2P energy markets create opportunities for direct trading between prosumers and consumers, ensuring compliance with distribution system constraints remains a challenge. This paper proposes an iterative method and graphical interpretation in order to assess complex interactions, addressing the persistent issue of network constraints. Additionally, this paper proposes a method to determine distribution locational marginal prices (DLMPs) for real-time traditional energy markets. This ensures effective coordination among sellers, buyers, and the distribution system operator. The proposed method aims to prevent negative impacts on distribution system operation via the determination of the allowable maximum trading power (MTP), ensuring empirical validity and practical implementation via operating conditions and forecast errors, thus distinguishing it from prior studies. This paper also establishes a model for P2P energy market interactions, utilizing linear estimations for efficient DLMP updates. The contributions of this paper enhance the understanding and operation of P2P energy markets, and is supported by simulation results validating the proposed method.
