Abstract:Despite a number of studies about how natural environments can affect human health and well-being, few have examined the potentially different effects of different types of vegetation. We therefore designed and conducted a randomised controlled experiment to identify the restorative potential of different types of trees and grass in an urban virtual reality (VR) environment. We initially induced stress in participants (n = 89) by asking them to complete a 5-minute math test while listening to noise, after which they were randomly assigned each to one of three VR environments: a courtyard with grass, a courtyard with trees, or a courtyard devoid of any vegetation. Participants were immersed in the VR experience for 10 min, during which we measured skin conductance levels (SCLs). We also assessed participants' positive and negative affect scores at baseline, before VR immersion, and after VR immersion. Repeated-measures analysis of variance with a general linear model indicated that the grassy environment had the greatest effect on positive affect. SCLs during the second half of VR immersion were significantly lower in both the grass and tree environments than in the concrete-only environment. Our results are consistent with Ulrich's theory that unlearned factors of evolutionary origin influence affective responses to environments. Our findings provide preliminary practical evidence for landscape planning that can maximise the restorative effects of urban environments.
Horticultural Activities Can Achieve the Same Affect Improvement Effect of Green Exercise: A Randomized Field Controlled Trial

Abstract:ObjectivesWith the deepening of non-drug intervention research on human mental health, more and more attention has been paid to the benefits of horticultural activities and green exercise on physical and psychological health. This study compared the affect improvement between horticultural activities with the same intensity and green exercise and that with or without green plants to verify the value of horticultural activities and green exercise in improving human affect and the importance of green plants.MethodsA total of 160 subjects aged 18–26 years (average age 22.5 years) were recruited and randomly divided into a control group, a horticultural activity group with green plants, a horticultural activity group without green plants, and a green exercise group. Demographics, sociological variables, and daily physical activity levels were investigated. Green space at Zhejiang Normal University was selected as the test site. After finishing the preparation work, the subjects sat quietly for 8 min before the pre-test. The horticultural group completed 20 min of horticultural activities {8 min of digging [40%*HRR(heart rate reserve) + RHR(resting heart rate)] + 8 min of transplantation [(50%*HRR + RHR) + 4 min of watering (30%*HRR + RHR)]}. The group returned to a calm state (no less than 20 min) for the post-test. The green exercise group completed a 20-min power bike ride. The activity intensity and activity time of the green exercise group were determined according to the activity intensity and time of the horticultural group. Dependent variables were collected, including blood pressure, positive/negative affects, heart rate variability (RMSSD, SDNN, and LF/HF), and controlled covariate environmental parameters (field temperature, humidity, and noise).Results(1) A significant difference was observed in the improvement effect except for negative affect between the green horticultural activity group and the green exercise group (F = 3.310; ɳp2 = 0.046; p = 0.037). No significant difference was observed in other affect indicators. (2) In the same pattern of with and without green plant horticultural activity group, the green plant horticultural activity group had a better effect on the improvement of affect, and the two groups had a better negative affect (F = 3.310; ɳp2 = 0.046; p = 0.037), SDNN index of heart rate variability(F = 1.035; ɳp2 = 0.015; p = 0.039), and RMSSD index (F = 2.225; ɳp2 = 0.032; p = 0.014), and no significant difference was observed in the improvement effect of other affect indicators between the two groups.ConclusionsHaving green horticulture can give the same intensity as green exercise and affect improvement. Findings suggest that people can choose green exercise or horticultural activities according to their preferences and physical characteristics in the two physical activities. Under the same pattern of horticultural activities, green plants are the key factor in improving the affect of horticultural activities. Choosing suitable plant types in horticultural activities is positively significant in enhancing affect.

Abstract:During the past 20 years, findings have indicated that nature plays an active role in helping people recover from stress and fatigue. Two of the most cited theories in this field are Rachel and Stephen Kaplan's theory of recovery from Directed Attention Fatigue in nature and Roger Ulrich's theory of aesthetic and affective responses to natural environments and stress recovery. One aim of the present study is to test whether being outdoors in a green recreational environment causes people to be more focused, compared to being in a room indoors (in line with hypotheses suggested by the Kaplans). Another aim is to test whether people experience stress reduction, i.e. as evidenced by changes in blood pressure and heart rate, if they are placed in an environment with many green elements (in line with hypotheses suggested by Ulrich). The overall study design is that of an intervention study. Fifteen elderly persons living at a home for very elderly people participated. Their powers of concentration, blood pressure and heart rate were measured before and after an hour of rest in a garden or in an indoor setting. Seven elderly people were randomly chosen to have their first series of tests in a garden, while eight elderly people had their first series of tests indoors. The results indicate that powers of concentration increase for very elderly people after a visit to a garden outside the geriatric home in which they live, compared to that after resting indoors in their favourite room. The results did not show any effects on blood pressure or heart rate. It is suggested that having a one-hour rest outdoors in a garden setting plays a role in elderly people's powers of concentration, and could thereby affect their performance of activities of daily living. One important factor in this study was that both the outdoor environment and the indoor environment at the home were highly valued by participants.

Abstract:Finding effective ways to mitigate the effects of cognitive fatigue is important especially for high risk occupations. Previous work may have been affected by ceiling effects as it did not attempt to induce stress and fatigue prior to treatment. Therefore, establishing a method to induce stress and cognitive fatigue quickly and effectively in laboratory settings would be useful. Vigilance tasks are a validated method to induce perceived stress and task performance errors, but can be lengthy. We compared an abbreviated vigilance task at two vigil lengths (15-minute & 30-minute) against a 15-minute quiet break as a control, while measuring per-ceived stress, mood, anxiety, and objective performance on a cognitive task before and after each condition. Our results showed the vigilance tasks can induce stress and cognitive fatigue and show promise as a pre-study measure to reduce ceiling effects in stress and fatigue restoration studies.

Abstract:physiological and psychological effects of working environments containing indoor plants on stress. Methods – In total, 50 participants (age 20 years) were recruited. Experiments were performed to evaluate the physiological and psychological responses during a 5-min computer task in the presence or absence of indoor plants. Psychophysiological evaluations were based on blood pressure, electroencephalography (EEG) results, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scores. Results – EEG analysis revealed that the presence of plants induced a significant change in brain activity, relative to that observed in the absence of plants. The participants exhibited lower STAI scores for tasks performed in the presence of plants than that performed in their absence. Conclusions – Thus, performing tasks in the presence of indoor plants for 5 minutes may lower mental stress.

Abstract:Abstract This study documents some of the benefits of adding plants to a windowless work place—a college computer lab. Participants' blood pressure and emotions were monitored while completing a simple, timed computer task in the presence or absence of plants. When plants were added to this interior space, the participants were more productive (12% quicker reaction time on the computer task) and less stressed (systolic blood pressure readings lowered by one to four units). Immediately after completing the task, participants in the room with plants present reported feeling more attentive (an increase of 0.5 on a self-reported scale from one to five) than people in the room with no plants.
Healing effects of foliage plants using physiological and psychological characteristics

Abstract:Foliage plants serve as interior accessories and are placed in indoor spaces, such as offices, hotels, restaurants, and homes. Recently, their healing effects have attracted much attention. In this investigation, the healing effects of foliage plants on human subjects performing a computer task were examined by measuring salivary amylase activity, blood pressure, and pulse as physiological indices, and by using the profile of mood states (POMS, the Japanese edition) as a psychological index. The salivary amylase activities of the subjects working in a room with foliage plants were significantly decreased compared with those of the subjects working in a room without plants. When comparing average increase/decrease rate between cases immediately after and 30 min after task-loading, the rates of the salivary amylase activity, anger-hostility, vigor of the subjects in the cases with and without plants, are −11.1 and 3.5%, −3.4 and 0.3%, and 3.2 and −0.6%, respectively. It is evident that foliage plants have healing effects in workers.

Abstract:Short-term exposure to nature has excellent potential to be used as a public health intervention measure. Nevertheless, the physiological and psychological mechanisms of this health benefit are still unclear. In this study, we intend to verify the effects of short-term exposure to nature on psychological functioning and to explore the underlying mechanism through experiments conducted in immersive virtual environments (IVEs). Participants were randomly exposed to videos of an urban forest and an indoor environment in IVEs. Before and after the exposure, a participant's self-perceived stress and cognitive performance were measured using the PSS14 form and the Stroop task, respectively. Their brain activities during the exposure were measured using the electroencephalogram (EEG). The PSS-14 and the Stroop task results confirmed the benefits of stress reduction and cognitive performance improvements from short-term nature exposure. At the same time, rhythmic brain activities during nature exposure indicated better attentional states. The electrodes around the parietal region detected significantly stronger power spectral density of the theta band than other bands. Also, participants showed high functional connectivity among different brain parts during nature exposure, which revealed better cognitive flexibility. The topographic pattern of the differences in functional connectivity overlapped well with the default mode network (DMN)-a "task-negative" network active during the resting state. The overlap indicated a lower cognitive processing load when exposing to nature. Our results support the hypothesis that nature's restorative effects mainly come from effortless processing in natural environments.
Effects of nature on restorative and cognitive benefits in indoor environment

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of natural exposure in an indoor environment on restorative quality and cognitive ability. Thirty participants were shown nature at three different indoor sites: baseline, indoor (some vegetation), and semi-indoor (a large amount of vegetation and view to sky) for five minutes. After viewing, they completed an assessment of restoration and a cognitive task, and their electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. Compared to the baseline, the sites with nature resulted in restorative (higher perceived restoration scores) and cognitive (higher working memory performance and lower delta-to-theta ratio (DTR), delta-to-alpha ratio (DAR), theta-to-beta ratio (TBR), and alpha-to-beta ratio (ABR) responses) benefits. These findings further our understanding of the effects of exposure to nature on restorative and cognitive benefits in an indoor environment, and help to build guidance for future research on the effects of nature indoors and designing restorative- and cognitive-enhancing indoor spaces.

Indoor nature integration for stress recovery and healthy eating: A picture experiment with plants versus green color

Abstract:Aim: Urbanized environments may stimulate unhealthy food choices and stress. Several theories explain that exposure to green nature can counter these stress effects. Since we spend most time indoors, integrating nature in the interior could be a promising health promotion tool. Hence, we tested whether the beneficial effect of nature for stress recovery is also present in indoor settings via the use of plants or green colors, and whether it is applicable on eating behavior as a new outcome. Methods: The 92 participants (18-30y, 16% men) were divided into four groups. Each viewed a 6-min slideshow with room pictures containing either green plants, green objects, greyscale plants or greyscale objects to allow distinction between color- and plant-effects. Group differences were tested for the perceived restorativeness scale, psychological recovery and eating behavior. To allow psychological recovery testing, participants were exposed to a stressor before the picture slideshow via the Trier Social Stress Test. The change of self-reports (stress, positive and negative affect) and psychophysiology (heart rate and vagal-induced heart rate variability RMSSD) post-slideshow versus pre-slideshow was checked. Eating behavior outcomes included change in hunger, craving, and food choice (for fruits, vegetables and snacks). Results: From the four picture sets, the green plants pictures were reported as most mentally restorative and appeared most beneficial for post-stressor recovery of positive affect, but not for negative affect or stress recovery. The green plants group also had higher preference for vegetables and lower preference or craving for (unhealthy) snacks. Those significant group differences were mainly due to the presence of plants and only occasionally due to the green color. Conclusion: Indoor green plant pictures were associated with higher mental restorativeness and healthier food choices. Integrating plants in the interior seems to be a relevant health promotion approach, while applying green colors seems less relevant.
Effect of a Virtual Reality-Based Restorative Environment on the Emotional and Cognitive Recovery of Individuals with Mild-to-Moderate Anxiety and Depression

Abstract:In this study, restorative environment theory and virtual reality (VR) technology were combined to build different 3D dynamic VR interactive scenes. We discuss the effects of a VR restorative environment on the emotional and cognitive recovery of individuals with mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression. First, we built a VR restorative garden scene, divided into four areas: forest, lawn, horticultural planting, and water features. The scene was verified to have a good recovery effect in 26 participants. Then, 195 participants with mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression were selected as experimental subjects. Through psychological testing and EMG (Electromyography) and EEG (Electroencephalography) data feedback, we further explored the differences in the sense of presence in VR restorative scenes and their effect on individual emotional and cognitive recovery. The results showed that (1) both the restorative environment images and the VR scenes had a healing effect (the reduction in negative emotions and the recovery of positive emotions and cognition), with no difference in the subjective feeling of recovery among the different scenes, but the recovery score of the VR urban environment was higher than that of the natural environment (differing from the results in real environments); (2) a high sense of presence can be experienced in different VR scenes, and interactive activities in VR scenes can provide a great presence experience; (3) the recovery effects of VR restorative environment on emotion and self-efficacy are realized through the presence of VR scenes; (4) a VR restorative environment is helpful for the emotional improvement and cognitive recovery of individuals with mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression. VR urban scenes also have good recovery effects. In terms of cognitive recovery, self-efficacy improved significantly. In addition, from the perspective of EEG indicators, the VR restorative scene experience activated the prefrontal lobe, which is conducive to cognitive recovery in individuals with mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression. In terms of emotional improvement, negative emotions were significantly reduced in the different VR scene groups. In conclusion, we further explored ways to help individuals with mild-to-moderate anxiety and depression, in order to promote the development and application of mental health.

Effects of biophilic indoor environment on stress and anxiety recovery: A between-subjects experiment in virtual reality

Abstract:Previous research has demonstrated the positive associations between outdoor nature contact and stress reduction. However, similar effects of incorporating natural elements into indoor environment (i.e. biophilic design) have been less well studied. We hypothesize that exposure to biophilic indoor environments help people recover from stress and anxiety and those effects differ among different types of biophilic elements. To test these hypotheses, we conducted a between-subjects experiment with 100 participants using virtual reality (VR). Participants were randomly assigned to experience one of four virtual offices (i.e. one non-biophilic base office and three similar offices enhanced with different biophilic design elements) after stressor tasks. Their physiological indicators of stress reaction, including heart rate variability, heart rate, skin conductance level and blood pressure, were measured by bio-monitoring sensors. Their anxiety level was measured by using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory test (short version). We found that participants in biophilic indoor environments had consistently better recovery responses after stressor compare to those in the non-biophilic environment, in terms of reduction on stress and anxiety. Effects on physiological responses are immediate after exposure to biophilic environments with the larger impacts in the first four minutes of the 6-minute recovery process. Additionally, these restorative effects differ among three different types of indoor biophilic environments. This research provides evidence that biophilic design elements that impact stress recovery and anxiety. It also demonstrated the potential that virtual reality may be a way to bring nature and its therapeutic benefits to patients in hospitals.
Stress recovery at home: Effects of the indoor visual and auditory stimuli in buildings

Abstract:In order to explore the potential contribution of the visual and auditory environment on the mental stress recovery of people in indoor environment, the visual, auditory, and visual-auditory stimuli were selected to design 3 kinds of restorative environments, under which the subjects experienced the baseline stage, the stress-induction stage, and the recovery stage, in sequence. The stress was induced with the continuous high frequency noise at 70–80 dB. The Electrocardiogram (ECG) data of the subjects were recorded during the whole experiment, and the heart rate variability (HRV) analysis was conducted, producing the mean heart rate (HR), the root mean square successive difference (RMSSD), as well as the ratio of low to high frequency power (LF/HF). The stress level was evaluated with these indexes during the whole experiment. Results showed that mean HR and LF/HF were higher than that of the baseline after the stress-induction, while the mean RMSSD was significantly lower than the baseline level, which implied the stress rise was resulted from the stress-induction stage. In addition, it was found that the mean HR and LF/HF reduced after the participants experienced the visual, the auditory and the visual-auditory restorative environments, but the mean RMSSD increased, which suggested the attenuated stress level. Furthermore, it was observed that the RMSSD was the most sensitive to the stress. Based on that, the time for the stress-recovery was estimated with the mean RMSSD. Results showed that the visual and visual-auditory stimuli produced better acute recovery effect than that of the auditory, but in the long run the auditory stimulus could bring the most stress reduction, followed by the visual stimulus. This study produced a potential solution for the stress recovery at home, which could be important for the improvement of the mental health, cognitive performance and the productivity of the occupants.

Promoting stress and anxiety recovery in older adults: assessing the therapeutic influence of biophilic green walls and outdoor view

Abstract:Previous research has already provided evidence regarding the favorable impact of green walls and outdoor views on stress reduction and anxiety alleviation. However, there has been limited exploration into the combined effects of green walls and outdoor views on older adults. In this study, a between-subjects experiment was conducted using virtual reality (VR) technology with 23 participants. Following exposure to stressors, each participant underwent four randomized sessions, each lasting 5 min, in various virtual reality (VR) environments, encompassing non-biophilic and biophilic environments (including green walls, outdoor views, and their combination). Throughout the process, we measured physiological indicators of stress responses, including heart rate, heart rate variability, skin conductance levels, and blood pressure, using biometric sensors. Psychological changes in participants, including anxiety levels, were evaluated through the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory, recovery scales, and self-reported emotional assessments. In conclusion, in comparison to non-biophilic environments, older adults consistently exhibited lower stress levels, experienced superior anxiety relief, and demonstrated improved recovery in nature connectedness environments, with a notably faster recovery rate. These findings suggest that the incorporation of nature connectedness principles into the indoor environments of public activity spaces within older adults care facilities can significantly contribute to stress reduction and anxiety alleviation among older adults. Furthermore, these effects appear to be contingent on the specific types of nature connectedness environments. These results can provide substantial evidence to support the design of indoor common activity spaces within older adults care facilities.

Abstract:Biodiversity is the essential foundation of ecosystem stability and significantly influences human health. However, the specific impacts of broadly varied biodiversity levels across diverse greenspaces on mental well-being remain unclear. In this randomized controlled trial, immersive virtual reality (VR) auditory-visual simulations, emulating real biodiversity scenarios, were employed to investigate the effect of diverse biodiversity levels on stress and affect. After an induced stress phase, participants (N = 90) were randomly assigned to a ten-minute immersion in one of three settings: urban park, peri -urban park, or nature conservation area. Physiological responses were measured via skin conductance level (SCL) and significant skin conductance responses (nSCR), while psychological responses were evaluated using Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS). Additionally, the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS) was employed to evaluate restoration potential. Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed that immersion in the peri -urban park and nature conservation area was associated with a significantly faster and more substantial decrease in SCL compared to the urban park. nSCR in the nature conservation area remained significantly lower than in the urban park. While immersion in all three natural environments significantly diminished negative affect, the nature conservation scenario was associated with a substantial decline in positive affect and received the lowest rating on the subjective restorativeness. A psychological benefit threshold related to biodiversity was observed, in contrast to the absence of a corresponding physiological threshold. This disparity suggests that an innate genetic affinity for high biodiversity may persists, unaffected by acquired experiences. Our study underscores the stress recovery benefits of high-value ecological environments, thereby fostering an avenue for further investigations into human-ecological health interconnections.

Abstract:The increasing prevalence of indoor isolation in modern society has resulted in a rise in mental health issues among urban residents. To address this, biophilic design has emerged as a potential solution to reconnect occupants with nature. It has been confirmed that indoor plants effectively improve human well-being by stimulating sensory experiences such as vision and olfaction. However, there is limited systematic study on the impact of single-sensory and multisensory stimuli from indoor plants on occupant health, and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this research, the impact of visual, olfactory, and combined stimuli from coriander plants on psychophysiological restoration and cognitive performance were analyzed utilizing a method that combined subjective evaluation, electrophysiology, salivary biochemical analysis, and cognitive task. Additionally, the potential intervention mechanisms of different types of sensory stimuli were explored from neurological, endocrine and immunological perspectives. The results indicated that the various types of sensory stimuli associated with coriander plants exhibited different intervention effects on mood and cognition, with the combined stimulus demonstrating better effects compared to single-sensory stimulus. All three stimuli—visual, olfactory and combined —induced spontaneous neural oscillations associated with relaxation or cognitive function, and significant changes occurred in metabolic pathways related to antidepressant, anti-inflammatory or neuroprotective effects. It appeared that visual stimulus elicited a greater response from the nervous system, while olfactory stimulus elicited a greater response from the endocrine and immune systems. This research provides an important reference for psychological interventions that utilize visual-olfactory stimuli from indoor plants.

Abstract:There is growing evidence to support the notion that plants can play an important role in providing a higher quality living environment. This study conducted a series of experiments to investigate the effects of characteristics, such as colour, odour and size of plants on human comfort, which was evaluated by a satisfaction survey and physiological measurements. Different kinds of plants with different levels of colour (green, tint and multicolour), odour (no odour, slight scent and strong scent) and size (small, medium and large) were chosen for the experiment design. A survey of participants’ satisfaction degree as well as measurements from electroencephalogram (EEG), electrocardiogram (ECG), oxyhaemoglobin saturation, fingertip blood flow, skin resistance and respiration rate were utilized to illustrate the response of participants to the environments either with different plants or without plants. The results demonstrated that an interior office with plants was preferred over an office without plants. The environments with green, slightly scented and small plants were reported as the most favourite conditions. The EEG and oxyhaemoglobin saturation showed significant changes when plant conditions varied. These outcomes provided design strategies for incorporating the plants into the interior office spaces and also provided the physiological variables to evaluate human comfort in the outside environment.

Abstract:Abstract Previous research has shown the positive effects of exposure to real and virtual nature. To investigate how such benefits might generalize to ever-more-prevalent virtual workplaces, we examined the effects of the absence or presence of virtual plants in an office environment in Virtual Reality (VR) on users’ cognitive performance and psychological well-being. The results of our user study with 39 participants show that in the presence of virtual plants, participants performed significantly better in both short-term memory and creativity tasks. Furthermore, they reported higher psychological well-being scores, including positive affect and attentive coping, whilst reporting lower feelings of anger and aggression after exposure to virtual plants in VR. The virtual office with plants was also perceived as more restorative and induced a higher sense of presence. Overall, these results highlight how the presence of virtual plants in VR can have positive influences on users, and therefore, constitute important design considerations when developing future working and learning spaces.

Abstract:Introduction Therapeutic horticulture (TH) is increasingly being applied for sub-health or patient mental health care. Whether plant and activity type will affect TH's effectiveness is unclear. Aim To evaluate the feasibility of an indoor TH for alleviating the anxiety symptoms and sleeping problems of people with poor sleep quality, and explore the potential affection of plant and activity type on health benefits. Method Thirty subjects (all with sleep problems and half with anxiety problems) were randomly assigned to three groups to do horticultural activities with ornamental plants, general aromatic plants, or aromatic plants with reported mental health functions, respectively. Six indoor TH activities were then held sequentially within two weeks. Psychological scales, subjective feedback questionnaires, and physiological indicators were used as evaluation indexes before and after horticulture activities. Results The TH relieved subjects' sleep and anxiety problems and was particularly effective in alleviating anxiety among people with high anxiety levels. Using ornamental plants was more effective in relieving stress while functional aromatic plants performed better in sleep improvement and satisfaction to TH. Each horticultural activity could improve mood state but showed different effects on the vitality of the participants. Conclusion The above findings provided some basis for the potential benefits of selecting plants and activities based on psychological care needs in the development of TH plans. Future research that expands upon the current project is warranted. A larger sample size is beneficial for obtaining more powerful statistical results.
