Abstract:To compare the performance of generalized additive model (GAM) and long short-term memory recurrent neural network (LSTM-RNN) on the prediction of daily admissions of respiratory diseases with comorbid diabetes. Daily data on air pollutants, meteorological factors and hospital admissions for respiratory diseases from Jan 1st, 2014 to Dec 31st, 2019 in Beijing were collected. LSTM-RNN was used to predict the daily admissions of respiratory diseases with comorbid diabetes, and the results were compared with those of GAM. The evaluation indexes were calculated by five-fold cross validation. Compared with the GAM, the prediction errors of LSTM-RNN were significantly lower [root mean squared error (RMSE): 21.21±3.30 vs. 46.13±7.60, <0.01; mean absolute error (MAE): 14.64±1.99 vs. 36.08±6.20, <0.01], and the value was significantly higher (0.79±0.06 vs. 0.57±0.12, <0.01). In gender stratification, RMSE, MAE and values of LSTM-RNN were better than those of GAM in predicting female admission (all <0.05), but there were no significant difference in predicting male admission between two models (all >0.05). In seasonal stratification, RMSE and MAE of LSTM-RNN were lower than those of GAM in predicting warm season admission (all <0.05), but there was no significant difference in value (>0.05). There were no significant difference in RMSE, MAE and between the two models in predicting cold season admission (all >0.05). In the stratification of functional areas, the RMSE, MAE and values of LSTM-RNN were better than those of GAM in predicting core area admission (all <0.05). has lower prediction errors and better fitting than the GAM, which can provide scientific basis for precise allocation of medical resources in polluted weather in advance.

Abstract:Background Asthma exacerbation is an acute or subacute episode of progressive worsening of asthma symptoms and can have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. However, efficient methods that can help identify personalized risk factors and make early predictions are lacking. Objective This study aims to use advanced deep learning models to better predict the risk of asthma exacerbations and to explore potential risk factors involved in progressive asthma. Methods We proposed a novel time-sensitive, attentive neural network to predict asthma exacerbation using clinical variables from large electronic health records. The clinical variables were collected from the Cerner Health Facts database between 1992 and 2015, including 31,433 adult patients with asthma. Interpretations on both patient and cohort levels were investigated based on the model parameters. Results The proposed model obtained an area under the curve value of 0.7003 through a five-fold cross-validation, which outperformed the baseline methods. The results also demonstrated that the addition of elapsed time embeddings considerably improved the prediction performance. Further analysis observed diverse distributions of contributing factors across patients as well as some possible cohort-level risk factors, which could be found supporting evidence from peer-reviewed literature such as respiratory diseases and esophageal reflux. Conclusions The proposed neural network model performed better than previous methods for the prediction of asthma exacerbation. We believe that personalized risk scores and analyses of contributing factors can help clinicians better assess the individual’s level of disease progression and afford the opportunity to adjust treatment, prevent exacerbation, and improve outcomes.

Enhancing Asthma Self-Management with Environmental Passive-Monitoring Data and Machine Learning-Based Predictions

Abstract:Monitoring enables timely action which is critical in avoiding asthma attacks. With the abundance of local weather and pollution data, when augmented with machine learning, it is becoming possible to replace traditional tedious active monitoring in certain instances for some groups of patients. This analysis on the AAMOS-00 dataset, with 22 severe asthma patients, compared the performance of XGBoost to predict worsening asthma conditions using either passive or active monitoring on two groups of patients: individuals who were and were not triggered by outdoor environmental factors. On patients triggered by environmental factors, the performances of the passive- and the active-monitoring models were close to matching (passive: AUC = 0.83, 2.9-fold increase in precision; active: AUC = 0.89, 3.1-fold increase in precision). On the other hand, the active-monitoring model was significantly superior for patients not triggered by environmental factors (passive: AUC = 0.52, 1.2-fold increase in precision; active: AUC = 0.83, 3.7-fold increase in precision). Robustness evaluation showed it was possible to have good predictions of asthma attacks in the coming 5 to 7 days using 5 to 28 days of data.
Predicting Asthma Exacerbation Risk in the Adult South Korean Population Using Integrated Health Data and Machine Learning Models

Abstract:Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease with significant burden; exacerbations can severely affect quality of life and healthcare costs. Advances in big data analysis and artificial intelligence have made it easier to predict future exacerbations more accurately. This study used an integrated dataset of Korean National Health Insurance, meteorological, air pollution, and viral data from national public databases to develop a model to predict asthma exacerbations on a daily basis in South Korea. We merged these sources and applied random forest, AdaBoost, XGBoost, and LightGBM machine learning models to compare their performances at predicting future exacerbations. Of the models, XGBoost (AUROC of 0.68 and accuracy of 0.96) and LightGBM (AUROC of 0.67 and accuracy of 0.96) were the most promising. Common important variables were the number of visits and exacerbations per year, and medical resource utilization, including the prescription of asthma medications. Comorbid diabetes, hypertension, gastroesophageal reflux, arthritis, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, and ischemic heart disease were also associated with elevated exacerbation risk. The models examined in this study highlight the importance of previous exacerbations, use of medical resources, and comorbidities in the prediction of future exacerbations in patients with asthma.

Abstract:Asthma is a disease which attacks the lungs and that affects people of all ages. Asthma prediction is crucial since many individuals already have asthma and increasing asthma patients is continuous. Machine learning (ML) has been demonstrated to help individuals make judgments and predictions based on vast amounts of data. Because Android applications are widely available, it will be highly beneficial to individuals if they can receive therapy through a simple app. In this study, the machine learning approach is utilized to determine whether or not a person is affected by asthma. Besides, an android application is being created to give therapy based on machine learning predictions. To collect data, we enlisted the help of 4,500 people. We collect information on 23 asthma-related characteristics. We utilized eight robust machine learning algorithms to analyze this dataset. We found that the Decision tree classifier had the best performance, out of the eight algorithms, with an accuracy of 87%. TensorFlow is utilized to integrate machine learning with an Android application. We accomplished asthma therapy using an Android application developed in Java and running on the Android Studio platform.

Abstract:Background: Asthma exacerbations negatively impact disease progression and can lead to hospitalizations and death. Ability to predict exacerbations may allow intervention for prevention and improve outcomes. We aimed to develop models using machine learning to predict risk of exacerbations, using Swedish patient level data.Methods: Data for 33,538 asthma patients were collected from electronic medical records and national registries covering healthcare contacts, diagnoses, prescriptions, lab tests, hospitalizations and socioeconomic factors, between 2000 and 2013. Machine-learning classifiers and logistic regression were used to create models to predict exacerbations within the next 15 days for two groups of adult asthma patients, either including or excluding Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Model performance was assessed by mean cross validation score of area under precision-recall curve (AUPRC) and Area under receiver operating curve (AUROC) was used to compare performance with previous studies.Results: The predictors of exacerbation were comorbidity burden, time since first exacerbation, number of previous exacerbations and number of healthcare contacts due to asthma within the last year. Model validation on test data yielded an AUROC of 0.9 and AUPRC of 0.010, when COPD was included and AUROC=0.90 and AUPRC=0.007 when COPD was excluded.Conclusion: Our work suggests that clinically available information on patient history collected via EMRs and national registries might not suffice to form the basis for tools to predict future risk of asthma exacerbation. Supplementation with other kinds of data might be necessary to improve performance of the predictive model to develop a more clinically useful tool.

Abstract:Chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, are a serious health crisis, affecting a large number of people globally and inflicting major costs on the economy. Current methods for assessing the progression of respiratory symptoms are either subjective and inaccurate, or complex and cumbersome, and do not incorporate environmental factors. Lacking predictive assessments and early intervention, unexpected exacerbations can lead to hospitalizations and high medical costs. This work presents a multi-modal solution for predicting the exacerbation risks of respiratory diseases, such as COPD, based on a novel spatio-temporal machine learning architecture for real-time and accurate respiratory events detection, and tracking of local environmental and meteorological data and trends. The proposed new machine learning architecture blends key attributes of both convolutional and recurrent neural networks, allowing extraction of both spatial and temporal features encoded in respiratory sounds, thereby leading to accurate classification and tracking of symptoms. Combined with the data from environmental and meteorological sensors, and a predictive model based on retrospective medical studies, this solution can assess and provide early warnings of respiratory disease exacerbations. This research will improve the quality of patients' lives through early medical intervention, thereby reducing hospitalization rates and medical costs.
Exacerbation predictive modelling using real-world data from the myCOPD app

Abstract:Background: Acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) are episodes of breathlessness, cough and sputum which are associated with the risk of hospitalisation, progressive lung function decline and death. They are often missed or diagnosed late. Accurate timely intervention can improve these poor outcomes. Digital tools can be used to capture symptoms and other clinical data in COPD. This study aims to apply machine learning to the largest available real-world digital dataset to develop AECOPD Prediction tools which could be used to support early intervention and improve clinical outcomes. Objective: To create and validate a machine learning predictive model that forecasts exacerbations of COPD 1-8 days in advance. The model is based on routine patient-entered data from myCOPD self-management app. Method: Adaptations of the AdaBoost algorithm were employed as machine learning approaches. The dataset included 506 patients users between 2017 and 2021. 55,066 app records were available for stable COPD event labels and 1263 records of AECOPD event labels. The data used for training the model included COPD assessment test (CAT) scores, symptom scores, smoking history, and previous exacerbation frequency. All exacerbation records used in the model were confined to the 1-8 days preceding a self-reported exacerbation event. Results: TheEasyEnsemble Classifier resulted in a Sensitivity of 67.0 % and a Specificity of 65 % with a positive predictive value (PPV) of 5.0 % and a negative predictive value (NPV) of 98.9 %. An AdaBoost model with a cost-sensitive decision tree resulted in a a Sensitivity of 35.0 % and a Specificity of 89.0 % with a PPV of 7.08 % and NPV of 98.3 %. Conclusion: This preliminary analysis demonstrates that machine learning approaches to real-world data from a widely deployed digital therapeutic has the potential to predict AECOPD and can be used to confidently exclude the risk of exacerbations of COPD within the next 8 days.

Abstract:Health Informatics Journal, Volume 30, Issue 3, July-September 2024. Objectives: Addressing the challenge of cost-effective asthma diagnosis amidst diverse symptom patterns among patients, this study aims to develop a machine learning-based asthma prediction tool for self-detection of asthma. Methods: Data from 6,665 participants in the Sri Lanka Health and Ageing Study (2018-2019) are used for this research. Thirteen machine learning algorithms, including Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Naïve Bayes, K-Nearest Neighbors, Gradient Boost, XGBoost, AdaBoost, CatBoost, LightGBM, Multi-Layer Perceptron, and Probabilistic Neural Network, are employed. Results: A hybrid version of Logistic Regression and LightGBM outperformed other models, achieving an AUC of 0.9062 and 79.85% sensitivity. Key predictive features for asthma include wheezing, breathlessness with wheezing, shortness of breath attacks, coughing attacks, chest tightness, nasal allergies, physical activity, passive smoking, ethnicity, and residential sector. Conclusion: Combining Logistic Regression and LightGBM models can effectively predict adult asthma based on self-reported symptoms and demographic and behavioural characteristics. The proposed expert system assists clinicians and patients in diagnosing potential asthma cases.

A Comprehensive Study on the Applications of Machine Learning for the Medical Diagnosis and Prognosis of Asthma

Abstract:An estimated 300 million people worldwide suffer from asthma, and this number is expected to increase to 400 million by 2025. Approximately 250,000 people die prematurely each year from asthma out of which, almost all deaths are avoidable. Most of these deaths occur because the patients are unaware of their asthmatic morbidity. If detected early, asthmatic mortality rate can be reduced by 78%, provided that the patients carry appropriate medication for the same and/or are in lose vicinity to medical equipment like nebulizers. This study focuses on the development and valuation of algorithms to diagnose asthma through symptom intensive questionary, clinical data and medical reports. Machine Learning Algorithms like Back-propagation model, Context Sensitive Auto-Associative Memory Neural Network Model, C4.5 Algorithm, Bayesian Network and Particle Swarm Optimization have been employed for the diagnosis of asthma and later a comparison is made between their respective prospects. All algorithms received an accuracy of over 80%. However, the use of Auto Associative Memory Model (on a layered Artificial Neural Network) displayed much better results. It reached to an accuracy of over 90% and an inconclusive diagnosis rate of less than 1% when trained with adequate data. In the end, na\"ive mobile based applications were developed on Android and iOS that made use of the self-training auto associative memory model to achieve an accuracy of nearly 94.2%.

Abstract:Background Self-reporting digital apps provide a way of remotely monitoring and managing patients with chronic conditions in the community. Leveraging the data collected by these apps in prognostic models could provide increased personalization of care and reduce the burden of care for people who live with chronic conditions. This study evaluated the predictive ability of prognostic models for the prediction of acute exacerbation events in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by using data self-reported to a digital health app. Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate if data self-reported to a digital health app can be used to predict acute exacerbation events in the near future. Methods This is a retrospective study evaluating the use of symptom and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease assessment test data self-reported to a digital health app (myCOPD) in predicting acute exacerbation events. We include data from 2374 patients who made 68,139 self-reports. We evaluated the degree to which the different variables self-reported to the app are predictive of exacerbation events and developed both heuristic and machine learning models to predict whether the patient will report an exacerbation event within 3 days of self-reporting to the app. The model’s predictive ability was evaluated based on self-reports from an independent set of patients. Results Users self-reported symptoms, and standard chronic obstructive pulmonary disease assessment tests displayed correlation with future exacerbation events. Both a baseline model (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUROC] 0.655, 95% CI 0.689-0.676) and a machine learning model (AUROC 0.727, 95% CI 0.720-0.735) showed moderate ability in predicting exacerbation events, occurring within 3 days of a given self-report. Although the baseline model obtained a fixed sensitivity and specificity of 0.551 (95% CI 0.508-0.596) and 0.759 (95% CI 0.752-0.767) respectively, the sensitivity and specificity of the machine learning model can be tuned by dichotomizing the continuous predictions it provides with different thresholds. Conclusions Data self-reported to health care apps designed to remotely monitor patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can be used to predict acute exacerbation events with moderate performance. This could increase personalization of care by allowing preemptive action to be taken to mitigate the risk of future exacerbation events.

Predicting asthma control deterioration in children

Abstract:Background: Pediatric asthma affects 7.1 million American children incurring an annual total direct healthcare cost around 9.3 billion dollars. Asthma control in children is suboptimal, leading to frequent asthma exacerbations, excess costs, and decreased quality of life. Successful prediction of risk for asthma control deterioration at the individual patient level would enhance self-management and enable early interventions to reduce asthma exacerbations. We developed and tested the first set of models for predicting a child's asthma control deterioration one week prior to occurrence. Methods: We previously reported validation of the Asthma Symptom Tracker, a weekly asthma self-monitoring tool. Over a period of two years, we used this tool to collect a total of 2912 weekly assessments of asthma control on 210 children. We combined the asthma control data set with patient attributes and environmental variables to develop machine learning models to predict a child's asthma control deterioration one week ahead. Results: Our best model achieved an accuracy of 71.8 %, a sensitivity of 73.8 %, a specificity of 71.4 %, and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.757. We also identified potential improvements to our models to stimulate future research on this topic. Conclusions: Our best model successfully predicted a child's asthma control level one week ahead. With adequate accuracy, the model could be integrated into electronic asthma self-monitoring systems to provide real-time decision support and personalized early warnings of potential asthma control deteriorations.
Predicting Asthma Outcome Using Partial Least Square Regression and Artificial Neural Networks

Abstract:The long-term solution to the asthma epidemic is believed to be prevention and not treatment of the established disease. Most cases of asthma begin during the first years of life; thus the early determination of which young children will have asthma later in their life counts as an important priority. Artificial neural networks (ANN) have been already utilized in medicine in order to improve the performance of the clinical decision-making tools. In this study, a new computational intelligence technique for the prediction of persistent asthma in children is presented. By employing partial least square regression, 9 out of 48 prognostic factors correlated to the persistent asthma have been chosen. Multilayer perceptron and probabilistic neural networks topologies have been investigated in order to obtain the best prediction accuracy. Based on the results, it is shown that the proposed system is able to predict the asthma outcome with a success of 96.77%. The ANN, with which these high rates of reliability were obtained, will help the doctors to identify which of the young patients are at a high risk of asthma disease progression. Moreover, this may lead to better treatment opportunities and hopefully better disease outcomes in adulthood.

Abstract:Background Asthma is a major chronic disease that poses a heavy burden on health care. To facilitate the allocation of care management resources aimed at improving outcomes for high-risk patients with asthma, we recently built a machine learning model to predict asthma hospital visits in the subsequent year in patients with asthma. Our model is more accurate than previous models. However, like most machine learning models, it offers no explanation of its prediction results. This creates a barrier for use in care management, where interpretability is desired. Objective This study aims to develop a method to automatically explain the prediction results of the model and recommend tailored interventions without lowering the performance measures of the model. Methods Our data were imbalanced, with only a small portion of data instances linking to future asthma hospital visits. To handle imbalanced data, we extended our previous method of automatically offering rule-formed explanations for the prediction results of any machine learning model on tabular data without lowering the model’s performance measures. In a secondary analysis of the 334,564 data instances from Intermountain Healthcare between 2005 and 2018 used to form our model, we employed the extended method to automatically explain the prediction results of our model and recommend tailored interventions. The patient cohort consisted of all patients with asthma who received care at Intermountain Healthcare between 2005 and 2018, and resided in Utah or Idaho as recorded at the visit. Results Our method explained the prediction results for 89.7% (391/436) of the patients with asthma who, per our model’s correct prediction, were likely to incur asthma hospital visits in the subsequent year. Conclusions This study is the first to demonstrate the feasibility of automatically offering rule-formed explanations for the prediction results of any machine learning model on imbalanced tabular data without lowering the performance measures of the model. After further improvement, our asthma outcome prediction model coupled with the automatic explanation function could be used by clinicians to guide the allocation of limited asthma care management resources and the identification of appropriate interventions.

Abstract:Air quality measurements contribute to diverse socio-economic sectors, including the environment and healthcare. Many methods are commonly applied to present air-quality levels, reflecting differing national standards. This study presents an air quality index prediction model, to measure air pollution levels for healthcare applications in congested areas. DNN-Markov modeling techniques are used to predict air quality, based on environmental conditions at peak hours. The developed model presents different approaches for highly accurate prediction of the air quality index for the next hour at a given location, under specific environmental conditions. This system could be used to support planning decisions related to the consequences of air quality. The study was conducted in selected locations in Jordan and England as a comparative model prediction accuracy study using different big-data sets of multivariate time series in traffic-heavy locations. The air quality index was represented using Neuro Fuzzy Logic as a method to contribute in air quality index predictions within blurry (boundary) values. The selected DNN-Markov hybrid model could predict air quality with accuracy of around (RMSE 7.86) for the location in England, and around (RMSE 15.27) for the one in Jordan.

Abstract:Asthma, a common chronic respiratory disease among children and adults, affects more than 200 million people worldwide and causes about 450,000 deaths each year. Machine learning is increasingly applied in healthcare to assist health practitioners in decision-making. In asthma management, machine learning excels in performing well-defined tasks, such as diagnosis, prediction, medication, and management. However, there remain uncertainties about how machine learning can be applied to predict asthma exacerbation. This study aimed to systematically review recent applications of machine learning techniques in predicting the risk of asthma attacks to assist asthma control and management. A total of 860 studies were initially identified from five databases. After the screening and full-text review, 20 studies were selected for inclusion in this review. The review considered recent studies published from January 2010 to February 2023. The 20 studies used machine learning techniques to support future asthma risk prediction by using various data sources such as clinical, medical, biological, and socio-demographic data sources, as well as environmental and meteorological data. While some studies considered prediction as a category, other studies predicted the probability of exacerbation. Only a group of studies applied prediction windows. The paper proposes a conceptual model to summarise how machine learning and available data sources can be leveraged to produce effective models for the early detection of asthma attacks. The review also generated a list of data sources that other researchers may use in similar work. Furthermore, we present opportunities for further research and the limitations of the preceding studies.

Predicting the Risk of Asthma Development in Youth Using Machine Learning Models

Abstract:Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease characterized by wheezing and difficulty breathing, which disproportionally affects 4.7 million children in the U.S. Currently, there is a lack of asthma predictive models for youth with good performance. This study aims to build machine learning models to better predict asthma development in youth using easily accessible national survey data. We analyzed cross-sectional combined 2021 and 2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data from 9,716 youth subjects with their corresponding parent information. We built several machine learning models with various sampling techniques (under- or over-sampling) for asthma prediction in youth, including XGBoost, Neural Networks, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Logistic Regression. We examined the associations of potential risk factors identified from both Random Forest and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) with asthma in youth. Between the different sampling techniques, undersampling the major class (subjects without asthma) yielded the best results in terms of the area under the curve (AUC) and F1 scores for the different predictive models. The Logistic Regression performed the best with the under-sampled data, yielding an AUC score of 0.7654 and an F1 score of 0.3452. In addition, we have identified additional important factors associated with asthma development in youth, such as low family poverty ratio and parents ever had asthma. This study successfully built machine learning models to predict asthma development in youth with good model performance. This will be important for early screening and detection of asthma in youth.

Abstract:Introduction: Asthma attacks are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality but are preventable in most if detected and treated promptly. However, the changes that occur physiologically and behaviourally in the days and weeks preceding an attack are not always recognised, highlighting a potential role for technology. The aim of this study 'DIGIPREDICT' is to identify early digital markers of asthma attacks using sensors embedded in smart devices including watches and inhalers, and leverage health and environmental datasets and artificial intelligence, to develop a risk prediction model to provide an early, personalised warning of asthma attacks. Methods and analysis: A prospective sample of 300 people, 12 years or older, with a history of a moderate or severe asthma attack in the last 12 months will be recruited in New Zealand. Each participant will be given a smart watch (to assess physiological measures such as heart and respiratory rate), peak flow meter, smart inhaler (to assess adherence and inhalation) and a cough monitoring application to use regularly over 6 months with fortnightly questionnaires on asthma control and well-being. Data on sociodemographics, asthma control, lung function, dietary intake, medical history and technology acceptance will be collected at baseline and at 6 months. Asthma attacks will be measured by self-report and confirmed with clinical records. The collected data, along with environmental data on weather and air quality, will be analysed using machine learning to develop a risk prediction model for asthma attacks. Ethics and dissemination: Ethical approval has been obtained from the New Zealand Health and Disability Ethics Committee (2023 FULL 13541). Enrolment began in August 2023. Results will be presented at local, national and international meetings, including dissemination via community groups, and submission for publication to peer-reviewed journals. Abstract:Background and aims: Asthma is a chronic lung disease and has a raising worldwide prevalence. Lack of timely and appropriate control for this condition leads to financial and physical injuries. The aim of this study is to prediction of asthma control levels by applying data mining algorithms. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study carried out in the city of Sanandaj in Iran. Samples consist of 600 referred patient patients who live with asthma to Tohid pulmonary clinic in Sanandaj In a period of two months in 2015. Data were collected based on the study's inclusion criteria. Preprocessing was performed and various algorithms include Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and Naïve Bayesian was assessed. Finally results were evaluated by confusion matrix. Results: Features ranked by applying feature selection methods; after in next step, 19 Features of 24 was chosen as the most effective asthma control features. Cough has the highest InfoGain, Relief-F and GainRatio comparing with other features. Results shows KNN and NaiveBayes have the highest accuracy near to 98%. Discussion: Experts can analysis and design accurate decision support systems by using data mining methods in healthcare. These methods aims to reduction and optimal usage of data. Important factors in determination of asthma control level were identified by considering of accurate mining algorithms. Therefore, identification of high risk patients were performed and proper services were provided to them to prevent major complications.

Abstract:Asthma is a diverse disease that affects over 300 million individuals globally. The prevalence of asthma has increased by 50% every decade since the 1960s, making it a serious global health issue. In addition to its associated high mortality, asthma generates large economic losses due to the degradation of patients' quality of life and the impairment of their physical fitness. Asthma research has evolved in recent years to fully analyze why certain diseases develop based on a variety of data and observations of patients' performance. The advent of new techniques offers good opportunities and application prospects for the development of asthma diagnosis methods. Over the last few decades, techniques like data mining and machine learning have been utilized to diagnose asthma. Nevertheless, these traditional methods are unable to address all of the difficulties associated with improving a small dataset to increase its quantity, quality, and feature space complexity at the same time. In this study, we propose a sustainable approach to asthma diagnosis using advanced machine learning techniques. To be more specific, we use feature selection to find the most important features, data augmentation to improve the dataset's resilience, and the extreme gradient boosting algorithm for classification. Data augmentation in the proposed method involves generating synthetic samples to increase the size of the training dataset, which is then utilized to enhance the training data initially. This could lessen the phenomenon of imbalanced data related to asthma. Then, to improve diagnosis accuracy and prioritize significant features, the extreme gradient boosting technique is used. The outcomes indicate that the proposed approach performs better in terms of diagnostic accuracy than current techniques. Furthermore, five essential features are extracted to help physicians diagnose asthma.
