Abstract:In functional magnetic resonance imaging studies, object selectivity is defined as a higher neural response to an object category than other object categories. Importantly, object selectivity is widely considered as a neural signature of a functionally-specialized area in processing its preferred object category in the human brain. However, the behavioral significance of the object selectivity remains unclear. In the present study, we used the individual differences approach to correlate participants' face selectivity in the face-selective regions with their behavioral performance in face recognition measured outside the scanner in a large sample of healthy adults. Face selectivity was defined as the z score of activation with the contrast of faces vs. non-face objects, and the face recognition ability was indexed as the normalized residual of the accuracy in recognizing previously-learned faces after regressing out that for non-face objects in an old/new memory task. We found that the participants with higher face selectivity in the fusiform face area (FFA) and the occipital face area (OFA), but not in the posterior part of the superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), possessed higher face recognition ability. Importantly, the association of face selectivity in the FFA and face recognition ability cannot be accounted for by FFA response to objects or behavioral performance in object recognition, suggesting that the association is domain-specific. Finally, the association is reliable, confirmed by the replication from another independent participant group. In sum, our finding provides empirical evidence on the validity of using object selectivity as a neural signature in defining object-selective regions in the human brain.

Linking CDOM patterns in Cayuga Lake, New York, USA, to terrigenous inputs

Abstract:Abstract Lacustrine patterns of the light absorption of colored dissolved organic matter (aCDOM) and its composition proxies were resolved and linked to concurrent conditions of tributary inputs for Cayuga Lake, New York. We analyzed fixed-frequency samples of the lake at 3 sites and runoff event-based samples at the mouths of 3 gauged tributaries over a 7 month interval and measured dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and aCDOM over the visible wavelengths (400–700 nm) and at 254 nm. The tributaries are demonstrated to be enriched in aCDOM and DOC, with widely different proxy conditions compared to the lake, which further diverge during runoff events. DOC, aCDOM, and the composition proxies for the tributaries had significant, and mostly strong, dependencies on flow rate, described by power-law relationships. The differences in the composition proxies indicated lower contributions of CDOM to the DOC pool, reduced aromaticity, decreased molecular size of CDOM, and decreased amounts of humic versus fulvic acids in the lake compared to the tributaries, all accepted signatures of photobleaching. Dynamics of aCDOM in the upper waters of the lake depended primarily on composition (e.g., color quality) and secondarily on a quantity metric (DOC), as demonstrated in a 2-component linear least-squares regression format. Signatures of linkages between the terrestrial inputs and in-lake aCDOM patterns and the effects of photobleaching include (1) the preferential in-lake loss of aCDOM relative to DOC, estimated from budget calculations; (2) the intermediate characteristics resolved at a near-shore site adjoining multiple tributary inflows; and (3) the magnitude and charactero f the dynamics observed at the pelagic sites.
The Selectivity of the Occipitotemporal M170 for Faces

Abstract:Evidence from fMRI, ERPs and intracranial recordings suggests the existence of face-specific mechanisms in the primate occipitotemporal cortex. The present study used a 64-channel MEG system to monitor neural activity while normal subjects viewed a sequence of grayscale photographs of a variety of unfamiliar faces and non-face stimuli. In 14 of 15 subjects, face stimuli evoked a larger response than non-face stimuli at a latency of 160 ms after stimulus onset at bilateral occipitotemporal sensors. Inverted face stimuli elicited responses that were no different in amplitude but 13 ms later in latency than upright faces. The profile of this M170 response across stimulus conditions is largely consistent with prior results using scalp and subdural ERPs.
Selectivity between faces in the responses of a population of neurons in the cortex in the superior temporal sulcus of the monkey

Abstract:There is a population of neurons in the cortex in the middle and anterior part of the superior temporal sulcus (STS) of the monkey with responses which are selective for faces. If, consistent with the effects of damage to the temporal lobe, these neurons are involved in face recognition or in making appropriate social responses to different individuals, then it might be expected that at least some of these neurons might respond differently to different faces. To investigate whether at least some of these neurons do respond differently to different faces, their responses were measured to a standard set of faces, presented in random sequence using a video framestore. It was found that a considerable proportion of the neurons with face selective responses tested (34/44 or 77%) responded differently to different faces, as shown by analyses of variance. An index of the discriminability of the most and least effective face stimulus (d') ranged between 0.2 and 5.0 for the different neurons. Although these neurons often responded differently to different faces, they did not usually respond to only one of the faces in the set, so that information that a particular face had been shown was present across an ensemble of neurons, rather than in the responses of an individual neuron. These findings indicate that the responses of these neurons would be useful in providing information on which different behavioral responses made to different faces could be based. These neurons could thus be filters, the output of which could be used for recognition of different individuals and in emotional responses made to different individuals.

Abstract:Face-selective regions in the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) have been defined for decades mainly with functional magnetic resonance imaging. This face-selective VOTC network is traditionally divided in a posterior 'core' system thought to subtend face perception, and regions of the anterior temporal lobe as a semantic memory component of an extended general system. In between these two putative systems lies the anterior fusiform gyrus and surrounding sulci, affected by magnetic susceptibility artifacts. Here we suggest that this methodological gap overlaps with and contributes to a conceptual gap between (visual) perception and semantic memory for faces. Filling this gap with intracerebral recordings and direct electrical stimulation reveals robust face-selectivity in the anterior fusiform gyrus and a crucial role of this region, especially in the right hemisphere, in identity recognition for both familiar and unfamiliar faces. Based on these observations, we propose an integrated theoretical framework for human face (identity) recognition according to which face-selective regions in the anterior fusiform gyrus join the dots between posterior and anterior cortical face memories.

Abstract:Continuous rate infusion (CRI) of furosemide in humans is considered superior to intermittent administration (IA). This study examined whether furosemide CRI, compared with IA, would increase diuretic efficacy with decreased fluid and electrolyte fluctuations and activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in the horse. Five mares were used in a crossover-design study. During a 24-hour period, each horse received a total of 3 mg/kg furosemide by either CRI (0.12 mg/kg/h preceded by a loading dose of 0.12 mg/kg IV) or IA (1 mg/kg IV q8h). There was not a statistically significant difference in urine volume over 24 hours between methods; however, urine volume was significantly greater after CRI compared with IA during the first 8 hours ([median 25th percentile, 75th percentile]: 9.6 L [8.9, 14.4] for CRI versus 5.9 L [5.3, 6.0] for IA). CRI produced a more uniform urine flow, decreased fluctuations in plasma volume, and suppressed renal concentrating ability throughout the infusion period. Potassium, Ca, and Cl excretion was greater during CRI than IA (1,133 mmol [1.110, 1,229] versus 764 mmol [709, 904], 102.7 mmol [96.0, 117.2] versus 73.3 mmol [65.0, 73.5], and 1,776 mmol [1,657, 2.378] versus 1,596 mmol [1,457, 1,767], respectively). Elimination half-lives of furosemide were 1.35 and 0.47 hours for CRI and IA, respectively. The area under the excretion rate curve was 1,285.7 and 184.2 mL x mg/mL for CRI and IA, respectively. Furosemide CRI (0.12 mg/kg/h) for 8 hours, preceded by a loading dose (0.12 mg/kg), is recommended when profound diuresis is needed acutely in horses.

Abstract:The ability of a human observer to detect the presence of a briefly flashed picture of a face can depend on the picture's spatial configuration, that is on whether its features are rearranged (jumbled) or are in their normal configuration. The face-detection effect (FDE) is found under conditions of backward masking, when the presence of a face can be detected with shorter masking intervals when it is in the normal than when in the rearranged configuration. A similar effect is found when the subject is asked to classify the face as rearranged or not — the face-classification effect (FCE). Part of the interest of the FDE and the FCE is that they show how the configuration of a stimulus can be an important factor in the perceptual processing which leads to detection and classification of the stimulus. To analyse these effects we recorded from single neurons in the cortex in the superior temporal sulcus of macaques when they were shown (in a visual fixation task) normal and rearranged faces under backward masking conditions shown in experiments 2 and 3 to produce, with the same apparatus, the FCE, and also to produce comparable effects on the identification of which face was present (called hereafter the face-identification effect), and also of the clarity of the face. We found in experiment 1 that there are some face-selective neurons which respond to faces only, or better, when the features in the faces are in their normal configuration rather than rearranged. We also showed in this experiment that the difference in the response to the normal as compared to the rearranged faces became greater when the masking stimulus was delayed more. Thus, at intermediate delays, there are more neurons active for the normal than for the rearranged face. We therefore propose that the FDE, the FCE, and the face-identification effect arise because the total number of neurons activated by faces in their normal configuration is greater than that activated by rearranged faces, because of the sensitivity of some face-selective neurons to the spatial arrangement of the features. The experiments also show that backward visual masking does produce abrupt termination of the firing of neurons in the temporal cortical visual system, so that the duration of a neuronal response is very short when visual stimuli can just be perceived.
Cortical Face-Selective Responses Emerge Early in Human Infancy

Abstract:In human adults, multiple cortical regions respond robustly to faces, including the occipital face area (OFA) and fusiform face area (FFA), implicated in face perception, and the superior temporal sulcus (STS) and medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), implicated in higher level social functions. When in development does face selectivity arise in each of these regions? Here, we combined two awake infant functional magnetic resonance neuroimaging (fMRI) datasets to create a sample size twice the size of previous reports (n=65 infants, 2.6-9.6 months). Infants watched movies of faces, bodies, objects, and scenes while fMRI data were collected. Despite variable amounts of data from each infant, individual subject whole-brain activations maps revealed a significant response to faces compared to non-face visual categories in the approximate location of OFA, FFA, STS, and MPFC. To determine the strength and nature of face selectivity in these regions, we used cross-validated functional region of interest (fROI) analyses. Across this larger sample size, face responses in OFA, FFA, STS, and MPFC were significantly greater than responses to bodies, objects, and scenes. Even the youngest infants (2-5 months) showed significantly face-selective responses in FFA, STS, and MPFC, but not OFA. These results demonstrate that face selectivity is present in multiple cortical regions within months of birth, providing powerful constraints on theories of cortical development.

Abstract:Abstract Faces are salient social stimuli that attract a stereotypical pattern of eye movement. The human amygdala and hippocampus are involved in various aspects of face processing; however, it remains unclear how they encode the content of fixations when viewing faces. To answer this question, we employed single-neuron recordings with simultaneous eye tracking when participants viewed natural face stimuli. We found a class of neurons in the human amygdala and hippocampus that encoded salient facial features such as the eyes and mouth. With a control experiment using non-face stimuli, we further showed that feature selectivity was specific to faces. We also found another population of neurons that differentiated saccades to the eyes vs. the mouth. Population decoding confirmed our results and further revealed the temporal dynamics of face feature coding. Interestingly, we found that the amygdala and hippocampus played different roles in encoding facial features. Lastly, we revealed two functional roles of feature-selective neurons: 1) they encoded the salient region for face recognition, and 2) they were related to perceived social trait judgments. Together, our results link eye movement with neural face processing and provide important mechanistic insights for human face perception.

Abstract:Of 497 single neurones recorded in the cortex in the fundus of the superior temporal sulcus (STS) of three alert rhesus monkeys, a population of at least 48 cells which were selectively responsive to faces had the following response properties: (1) The cells' responses to faces (real or projected, human or rhesus monkey) were two to ten times as large as those to gratings, simple geometrical stimuli or complex 3-D objects. (2) Neuronal responses to faces were excitatory, sustained and were time-locked to the stimulus presentation with a latency of between 80 and 160 ms. (3) The cells were unresponsive to auditory or tactile stimuli and to the sight of arousing or aversive stimuli. (4) The magnitude of the responses of 28 cells tested was relatively constant despite transformations, such as rotation, so that the face was inverted or horizontal, and alterations of colour, size or distance. (5) Rotation to profile substantially reduced the responses of 21 cells (31 tested). (6) Masking out or presenting parts of the face (i.e. eyes, mouth or hair) in isolation revealed that different cells responded to different features or subsets of features. (7) For several cells, responses to the normal organisation of cut-out or line-drawn facial features were significantly larger than to jumbled controls. These findings indicate that explanations in terms of arousal, emotional or motor reactions, simple visual feature sensitivity or receptive fields are insufficient to account for the selective responses to faces and face features observed in this population of STS neurones. It appears that these neurones are part of a system specialised to code for faces or features present in faces, and it is suggested that damage to this system is related to prosopagnosia, or difficulty in face recognition, in man and to the tameness and social disturbances which follow temporal lobe damage and are part of the Klüver-Bucy syndrome in the monkey.
Sparseness of the Neuronal Representation of Stimuli in the Primate Temporal Visual-Cortex

Abstract:1. To analyze the selectivity and the sparseness of firing to visual stimuli of single neurons in the primate temporal cortical visual area, neuronal responses were measured to a set of 68 visual stimuli in macaques performing a visual fixation task. The population of neurons analyzed had responses that occurred primarily to faces. The stimuli included 23 faces, and 45 nonface images of real-world scenes, so that the function of this brain region could be analyzed when it was processing natural scenes. 2. The neurons were selected to meet the previously used criteria of face selectivity by responding more than twice as much to the optimal face as to the optimal nonface stimulus in the set. Application of information theoretic analyses to the responses of these neurons confirmed that their responses contained much more information about which of 20 face stimuli had been seen (on average 0.4 bits) than about which (of 20) nonface stimuli had been seen (on average 0.07 bits). 3. The sparseness of the representation of a scene or object provided by each of these neurons (which can be thought of as the proportion of stimuli to which the neuron responds, and which is fundamental to understanding the network operation of the system) can be defined as [formula: see text] where ri is the firing rate to the ith stimulus in the set of n stimuli. The sparseness has a maximal value of 1.0. It was found that the sparseness of the representation of the 68 stimuli by each neuron had an average across all neurons of 0.65. This indicates a rather distributed representation. 4. If the spontaneous firing rate was subtracted from the firing rate of the neuron to each stimulus, so that the changes of firing rate, i.e., the responses of the neurons, were used in the sparseness calculation, then the "response sparseness" had a lower value, with a mean of 0.33 for the population of neurons, or 0.60 if calculated over the set of faces. 5. Multidimensional scaling to produce a stimulus space represented by this population of neurons showed that the different faces were well separated in the space created, whereas the different nonface stimuli were grouped together in the space. 6. The information analyses and multidimensional scaling provided evidence that what was made explicit in the responses of these neurons was information about which face had been seen.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:Neurons with responses selective for faces are described in the macaque orbitofrontal cortex. The neurons typically respond 2–13 times more to the best face than to the best non-face stimulus, and have response latencies which are typically in the range of 130–220 ms. Some of these face-selective neurons respond to identity, and others to facial expression. Some of the neurons do not have different responses to different views of a face, which is a useful property of neurons responding to face identity. Other neurons have view-dependent responses, and some respond to moving but not still heads. The neurons with face expression, face movement, or face view-dependent responses would all be useful as part of a system decoding and representing signals important in social interactions. The representation of face identity is also important in social interactions, for it provides some of the information needed in order to make different responses to different individuals. In addition, some orbitofrontal cortex neurons were shown to be tuned to auditory stimuli, including for some neurons, the sound of vocalizations. The findings are relevant to understanding the functions of the primate including human orbitofrontal cortex in normal behaviour, and to understanding the effects of damage to this region in humans.

Abstract:Humans exhibit a marked specialization to process the most experienced facial morphologies. In particular, nonhuman primate faces are poorly discriminated compared to human faces in behavioral tasks. So far however, a clear and consistent marker that quantifies our expertise in human over monkey face discrimination directly from brain activity is lacking. Here, using scalp electroencephalography (EEG), we isolate a direct signature of individuation abilities for human and nonhuman (i.e., macaque faces) primate faces. Human or monkey faces were rapidly presented at a base rate of 12 Hz in upright or inverted orientations while participants performed an orthogonal behavioral task. In each stimulation sequence, eight face images of one individual were used as base stimuli, while images of other individuals were briefly introduced every 9th stimulus to quantify an identity-change response at 1.33 Hz and harmonics (i.e., integer multiples) in the EEG frequency spectrum. The brain response to upright human faces was twice as large as to monkey faces, and reduced following picture-plane inversion for human faces only. This reflects the disruption of high-level face identity discrimination developed for the canonical upright human face. No difference was observed between upright monkey faces and inverted human faces, suggesting non-expert visual processes for those two face formats associated with little experience. In addition, the size of the inversion effect for human, but not monkey faces, was predictive of the expertise effect (i.e., difference between upright human and monkey faces) at the individual level. This result suggests a selective ability to discriminate human faces that does not contribute to the individuation of other unexperienced face morphologies such as monkey faces. Overall, these findings indicate that human expertise for conspecific face discrimination can be isolated and quantified in individual human brains.
Neurophysiological Mechanisms Underlying Face Processing Within and Beyond the Temporal Cortical Visual Areas.

Abstract:The ways in which information about faces is represented and stored in the temporal lobe visual areas of primates, as shown by recordings from single neurons in macaques, are considered. Some neurons that respond primarily to faces are found in the cortex in the anterior part of the superior temporal sulcus (in which neurons are especially likely to be tuned to facial expression and to face movement involved in gesture), and in the TE areas more ventrally forming the inferior temporal gyrus (in which neurons are more likely to have responses related to the identity of faces). Quantitative studies of the responses of the neurons that respond differently to the faces of different individuals show that information about the identity of the individual is represented by the responses of a population of neurons, that is, ensemble encoding rather than 'grandmother cell' encoding is used. It is argued that this type of tuning is a delicate compromise between very fine tuning, which has the advantage of low interference in neuronal network operations but the disadvantage of losing the useful properties (such as generalization, completion and graceful degradation) of storage in neuronal networks, and broad tuning, which has the advantage of allowing these properties of neuronal networks to be realized but the disadvantage of leading to interference between the different memories stored in an associative network. There is evidence that the responses of some of these neurons are altered by experience so that new stimuli become incorporated in the network. It is shown that the representation that is built in temporal cortical areas shows considerable invariance for size, contrast, spatial frequency and translation. Thus the representation is in a form which is particularly useful for storage and as an output from the visual system. It is also shown that one of the representations that is built is object based, which is suitable for recognition and as an input to associative memory, and that another is viewer centred, which is appropriate for conveying information about gesture. Ways are considered in which such cortical representations might be built by competitive self-organization aided by back projections in the multi-stage cortical processing hierarchy which has convergence from stage to stage.

Abstract:Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has been used extensively to identify regions in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex that are selective for categories of visual stimuli. However, comparatively little is known about the neuronal responses relative to these fMRI-defined regions. Here, we compared in nonhuman primates the distribution and response properties of IT neurons recorded within versus outside fMRI regions selective for four different visual categories: faces, body parts, objects, and places. Although individual neurons that preferred each of the four categories were found throughout the sampled regions, they were most concentrated within the corresponding fMRI region, decreasing significantly within 1-4 mm from the edge of these regions. Furthermore, the correspondence between fMRI and neuronal distributions was specific to neurons that increased their firing rates in response to the visual stimuli but not to neurons suppressed by visual stimuli, suggesting that the processes associated with inhibiting neuronal activity did not contribute strongly to the fMRI signal in this experiment.

Awake fMRI reveals a specialized region in dog temporal cortex for face processing

Abstract:Recent behavioral evidence suggests that dogs, like humans and monkeys, are capable of visual face recognition. But do dogs also exhibit specialized cortical face regions similar to humans and monkeys? Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in six dogs trained to remain motionless during scanning without restraint or sedation, we found a region in the canine temporal lobe that responded significantly more to movies of human faces than to movies of everyday objects. Next, using a new stimulus set to investigate face selectivity in this predefined candidate dog face area, we found that this region responded similarly to images of human faces and dog faces, yet significantly more to both human and dog faces than to images of objects. Such face selectivity was not found in dog primary visual cortex. Taken together, these findings: (1) provide the first evidence for a face-selective region in the temporal cortex of dogs, which cannot be explained by simple low-level visual feature extraction; (2) reveal that neural machinery dedicated to face processing is not unique to primates; and (3) may help explain dogs' exquisite sensitivity to human social cues.

Abstract:Face-selective neurons were discovered in the inferior temporal visual cortex by Perrett et al. (1982), in the amygdala by Sanghera, Rolls, and Roper-Hall (Sanghera et al. 1979; Rolls 2011) and Leonard et al. (1985), and in the orbitofrontal cortex by Rolls et al. (2006). These neurons respond 2–20 times more to the best face compared to the best nonface, and different brain regions provide the basis for face recognition and for emotional responses to faces. These neurons are described here.

Abstract:Abstract Recent neuroimaging studies have described a differential activation pattern associated with specific object images (e.g., face-related and building-related activation) in human occipito-temporal cortex. However, it is as yet unclear to what extent this selectivity is due to differences in the statistics of local object features present in the different object categories, and to what extent it reflects holistic grouping processes operating across the entire object image. To resolve this question it is essential to use images in which identical sets of local features elicit the perception of different object categories. The classic Rubin vase-face illusion provides an excellent experimental set to test this question. In the illusion, the same local contours lead to the perception of different objects (vase or face). Here we employed a modified Rubin vase-face illusion to explore to what extent the activation in face-related regions is attributable to the presence of local face features, or is due to a more holistic grouping process that involves the entire face figure. Biasing cues (gratings and color) were used to control the perceptual state of the observer. We found enhanced activation in face-related regions during the “face profile” perceptual state compared to the “vase” perceptual state. Control images ruled out the involvement of the biasing cues in the effect. Thus, object-selective activation in human face-related regions entails global grouping processes that go beyond the local processing of stimulus features.
