Abstract:Bismuth oxyhalide, usually employed as a photocatalyst, has not been tested as an activator of peroxide for water purification. This work explores the potential application of bismuth oxyhalide (BiOX, X = Cl, Br, I)-activated peroxide (H2O2; peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate) systems for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in water destined for drinking water. BiOBr showed the highest activity toward the peroxides investigated, especially toward PMS. The most efficient combination, BiOBr/PMS, was selected to further research predominant species responsible for CBZ degradation and toxicity of transformation products. With repeated use of BiOBr, low bismuth-leaching and subtle changes in crystallinity and activity were observed. CBZ degradation was primarily (67.3%) attributable to attack by sulfate radical. Toxicity test and identification of the oxidation products indicated some toxic intermediates may be produced. A possible degradation pathway is proposed. Besides substitution of the hydroxyl groups on the surface of the catalyst particles, PMS's complexation with the lattice Bi(III) through ion exchange with interlayer bromide ion was involved in the decomposition of PMS. The Bi(III)-Bi(V)-Bi(III) redox cycle contributed to the efficient generation of sulfate radicals from the PMS. Our findings provide a simple and efficient process to produce powerful radicals from PMS for refractory pollutant removal.
Degradation of carbamazepine by the UVA-LED365/ClO2/NaClO process: Kinetics, mechanisms and DBPs yield

Abstract:A mixed oxidant of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and NaClO was often used in water treatment. A novel UVA-LED (365 nm)-activated mixed ClO2/NaClO process was proposed for the degradation of micropollutants in this study. Carbamazepine (CBZ) was selected as the target pollutant. Compared with the UVA365/ClO2 process, the UVA365/ClO2/NaClO process can improve the degradation of CBZ, with the rate constant increasing from 2.11×10-4 sec-1 to 2.74×10-4 sec-1. In addition, the consumption of oxidants in the UVA365/ClO2/NaClO process (73.67%) can also be lower than that of UVA365/NaClO (86.42%). When the NaClO ratio increased, both the degradation efficiency of CBZ and the consumption of oxidants can increase in the UVA365/ClO2/NaClO process. The solution pH can affect the contribution of NaClO in the total oxidant ratio. When the pH range of 6.0-8.0, the combination process can generate more active species to promote the degradation of CBZ. The change of active species with oxidant molar ratio was investigated in the UVA365/ClO2/NaClO process. When ClO2 acted as the main oxidant, HO• and Cl• were the main active species, while when NaClO was the main oxidant, ClO• played a role in the system. Both chloride ion (Cl-), bicarbonate ion (HCO3-), and nitrate ion (NO3-) can promote the reaction system. As the concentration of NaClO in the reaction solution increased, the generation of chlorates will decrease. The UVA365/ClO2/NaClO process can effectively control the formation of volatile disinfection by-products (DBPs), and with the increase of ClO2 dosage, the formation of DBPs can also decrease.
Insight into carbamazepine degradation by UV/monochloramine: Reaction mechanism, oxidation products, and DBPs formation

Abstract:UV/monochloramine (NH2Cl) process has attracted some attention for the elimination of contaminants of emerging concern as a novel advanced oxidation process. However, there is still much uncertainty on the performance and mechanisms of UV/NH2Cl process because of its complexity and generation of various species of radicals, including NH2•, HO•, Cl• and other reactive chlorine species (RCS). The mechanism and influence factors of degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the UV/NH2Cl process were investigated, and a synergistic effect was observed. Degradation of CBZ under all investigated conditions followed pseudo-first order kinetics. The corresponding rate constant increased along with the dosage of NH2Cl, and was affected significantly by the presence of bicarbonate and natural organic matter. The process has little pH-dependency, while the specific contribution of RCS and HO• changed with solution pH, and RCS always act as a major contributor to the degradation of CBZ. Eleven byproducts of CBZ were identified and their respective evolution profiles were determined. The participation of UV in chloramination can reduce the formation of nitrogenous DBPs, but promote the formation of carbonaceous DBPs. Furthermore, when influent, sand filtered, and granular activated carbon filtered water was respectively used as background, degradation of CBZ was inhibited to different degree and more disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were generated, compared to deionized water. The electrical energy per order for degradation of CBZ in the UV/NH2Cl process was also calculated to obtain some preliminary cost information.

Abstract:A novel graphene nanoplatelet (GN)-doped PbO2 electrode was fabricated and utilized to pulse electrochemical oxidize carbamazepine (CBZ) in aquesous solution. The GN-PbO2 electrode differed from a pure PbO2 electrode in that it exhibited higher surface roughness, smaller particle size, larger specific surface area, greater oxidation peak current, smaller charge transfer resistance, and higher oxygen evolution potential. After electrolysis for 90 min, 94.74% of CBZ and 45.15% of chemical oxygen demand could be removed at an initial pH of 3, pulsed frequency of 3000 Hz, current density of 20 mA cm(-2), and pulsed duty cycle of 50%. Additionally, the primary electrochemical oxidation mechanism at the GN-PbO2 anode was indirect radical oxidation and the degradation pathway of CBZ in pulsed electrochemical oxidation was investigated and clarified considering the identified intermediate products and theoretical computations. The results demonstrate that pulsed electrochemical oxidation based on GN-PbO2 electrodes is a promising approach to increasing the viability of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment by electrochemical technologies.

Abstract:Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a ubiquitous micropollutant in wastewater and reclaimed water. In this study, we evaluated CBZ degradation by light-emitting diode (LED)-driven UV/chlorine oxidation. Under LED irradiation of 280nm (LED280) and 310nm (LED310), UV/chlorine could efficiently degrade CBZ. Compared with LED UV/H2O2 treatment, LED UV/chlorine oxidation achieved a CBZ degradation rate that was one order of magnitude higher. The CBZ degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the rate constants (kobs,CBZ) for LED280 UV/chlorine and LED310 UV/chlorine increased from 0.072 to 0.91min−1 and 0.044 to 0.65min−1, respectively, when chlorine dosage increased from 0.07 to 0.14mM. Under neutral conditions, the generated OH and Cl accounted for over 80% of the CBZ degraded by LED UV/chlorine. The maximum kobs,CBZ for LED UV/chlorine was observed at pH 8.5; kobs,CBZ decreased when solution pH increased to 9.5 or decreased to 5.5. This is because the main UV-absorbing chlorine species in the LED280 and LED310 systems is OCl−, which is different from those in low-pressure mercury lamp/chlorine systems. The acute toxicity for CBZ solution treated by LED UV/chlorine increased at lower fluence (<752mJ/cm2) and decreased at higher fluence (>1233mJ/cm2). However, the cytotoxicity to Chinese hamster ovary cells and adsorbable organic halide content of CBZ solution both increased after chlorination and LED UV/chlorine. The lowest electrical cost for the degradation of CBZ by LED UV/chlorine occurred under neutral conditions with a chlorine dosage of 0.4–0.7mM (28.4–49.7mg/L).

Abstract:For successful wastewater reclamation, advanced oxidation processes have attracted attention for elimination of emerging contaminants. In this study, the synergistic treatment with UV irradiation and chlorine (UV/chlorine) was used to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ). Neither UV irradiation alone nor chlorination alone could efficiently degraded CBZ. UV/chlorine oxidation showed a significant synergistic effect on CBZ degradation through generation of radical species (OH and Cl), and this process could be well depicted by pseudo first order kinetic. The degradation rate constants (kobs,CBZ) of CBZ increased linearly with increasing UV irradiance and chlorine dosage. The degradation of CBZ by UV/chlorine in acidic solutions was more efficient than that in basic solutions mainly due to the effect of pH on the dissociation of HOCl and OCl(-) and then on the quantum yields and radical species quenching of UV/chlorine. When pH was increased from 5.5 to 9.5, the rate constants of degradation of CBZ by OH decreased from 0.65 to 0.14 min(-1) and that by Cl decreased from 0.40 to 0.11 min(-1). The rate constant for the reaction between Cl and CBZ was 5.6 ± 1.6 × 10(10) M(-1) s(-1). Anions of HCO3(-) (1-50 mM) showed moderate inhibition of CBZ degradation by UV/chlorine, while Cl(-) did not. UV/chlorine could efficiently degrade CBZ in wastewater treatment plant effluent, although the degradation was inhibited by about 30% compared with that in ultrapure water with chlorine dosage of 0.14-0.56 mM. Nine main oxidation products of the CBZ degradation by UV/chlorine were identified using the HPLC-QToF MS/MS. Initial oxidation products arose from hydroxylation, carboxylation and hydrogen atom abstraction of CBZ by OH and Cl, and were then further oxidized to generate acylamino cleavage and decarboxylation products of acridine and acridione.

Abstract:Although the specific functions of sleep are not known, an increasing body of literature has suggested that sleep is important for the proper functioning of host defense systems. Sleep loss is associated with changes in some parameters of host defense, whereas pathogenic challenge leads to alterations in sleep patterns, probably mediated by activation of host defense systems. However, whether sleep-host defense relationships represent physiologically important regulatory interactions vs. nonspecific cross-reactivity between the two systems remains an open question. In either case, it is unlikely that sleep or sleep loss have global effects on host defenses or vice versa. Further work is needed to understand the role of sleep in health and disease.
Enhanced oxidation of carbamazepine by UV-LED/persulfate and UV-LED/H2O2 processes in the presence of trace copper ions

Abstract:In this study, the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) was comparatively investigated by UV-LED/persulfate (PS) and UV-LED/H2O2 processes in the presence of trace Cu2+ at neutral pH. Results showed that the introduction of trace Cu2+ accelerated CBZ degradation and more favorable performance was achieved in UV-LED/PS process. As oxidants dosage raised from 0.2 to 1.0 mM, the pseudo-first-order rate constant (kobs ) value of CBZ both linearly increased in UV-LED/PS/Cu2+ and UV-LED/H2O2/Cu2+ processes. The promotion effect of Cu2+ at low level was more significant than that at high level in both processes at neutral pH. With reducing solution pH from 7.2 to 3.1, the kobs value dramatically increased from 0.136 to 0.399 min−1 in UV-LED/PS/Cu2+ process, while its value exhibited the imperceptible change in UV-LED/H2O2/Cu2+ process. OH functioned as the major contributor to CBZ degradation in two processes in pH range of 3.1–7.2. The addition of humic acid (HA), HCO3 − and Cl− impeded CBZ degradation in UV-LED/H2O2/Cu2+ process. As for UV-LED/PS/Cu2+ process, the kobs value significantly increased in the presence of Cl−, while the introduction of HA and HCO3 − restrained the removal. Total eleven degradation intermediates of CBZ were identified and a reasonable degradation pathway was proposed based on HPLC-MS/MS analysis and the calculation of Gaussian program. The acute toxicities of reacted solution enhanced in both processes within 15 min, especially in UV-LED/PS/Cu2+ process. In terms of electrical energy per order value, UV-LED/PS/Cu2+ process was found to be more cost-effective than UV-LED/H2O2/Cu2+ process. It was also noticed that UV-LED/PS process was more effective for CBZ removal in natural water in the presence of trace Cu2+.

Abstract:Carbamazepine (CBZ) is one of the pharmaceuticals most frequently detected in the aqueous environment. This study investigated the transformation products when CBZ is degraded by chlorine under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation (the UV/chlorine process). Detailed pathways for the degradation of CBZ were elucidated using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC)−quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (QTOF-MS). CBZ is readily degraded by hydroxyl radicals (HO) and chlorine radicals (Cl) in the UV/chlorine process, and 24 transformation products were identified. The products indicate that the 10,11-double bond and aromatic ring in CBZ are the sites most susceptible to attack by HO and Cl. Subsequent reaction produces hydroxylated and chlorinated aromatic ring products. Four specific products were quantified and their evolution was related with the chlorine dose, pH, and natural organic matter concentration. Their yields showed an increase followed by a decreasing trend with prolonged reaction time. CBZ-10,11-epoxide (I), the main quantified transformation product from HO oxidation, was observed with a peak transformation yield of 3–32% depending on the conditions. The more toxic acridine (IV) was formed involving both HO and Cl with peak transformation yields of 0.4–1%. All four quantified products together amounted to a peak transformation yield of 34.5%. The potential toxicity of the transformation products was assayed by evaluating their inhibition of the bioluminescence of the bacterium Vibrio Fischeri. The inhibition increased at first and the decreased at longer reaction times, which was in parallel with the evolution of transformation products.

Abstract:Simultaneous removal of chlorite (ClO2-) and organic micro-pollutants (OMPs) by the irradiation of UV is a novel process. In this study we used UV light emitting diode (UV-LED) as a new UV source to systematically investigate the effect of UV wavelength (255, 285, 365 nm) on the simultaneous removal of carbamazepine (CBZ) and ClO2-. Removal of both CBZ and ClO2- followed the order of 255, 285, and 365 nm. Formation of hydroxyl radical and reactive chlorine species (RCS) were confirmed during the photolysis of ClO2- using probe compounds. RCS were always the predominant contributor to the degradation of CBZ in UV-LED/ClO2- system. The impacts of ClO2- dosage, pH, bicarbonate/carbonate (HCO3-/CO32-), and the effect of natural organic matter (NOM) on CBZ degradation were also evaluated. This study identified the products produced by CBZ through possible degradation pathways during the transformation process. Further, the amount of ClO2- may affect the amount of chlorate produced in UV/ClO2- system. Overall, our research provides an in-depth analysis of the effects of UV wavelength on the simultaneous removal of ClO2- and OMPs in water.
UV254 induced sulfamethazine and carbamazepine elimination in the presence of nitrate: Roles of reactive species and generation risk of highly toxic DBPs

Abstract:This study systematically compared the degradation kinetics, conversion pathways, formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), and changes in toxicity for sulfamethazine and carbamazepine in UV/nitrate system. Additionally, the study simulated the generation of DBPs in the post-chlorination process after the introduction of bromine ions (Br-). The contributions of UV irradiation, hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) to SMT degradation were determined to be 28.70 %, 11.70 %, and 59.60 %, respectively. The contributions of UV irradiation, •OH, and RNS to CBZ degradation were found to be 0.00 %, 96.90 %, and 3.10 %, respectively. A higher dosage of NO3- facilitated the degradation of both SMT and CBZ. Solution pH posed almost no effect on SMT degradation, while acidic conditions favored CBZ removal. The degradation of SMT was found to be slightly promoted at low concentrations of Cl-, while the presence of HCO3- significantly accelerated the degradation. Cl-, as well as HCO3-, retarded the CBZ degradation. Natural organic matter (NOM) as a free radical scavenger and UV irradiation filter posed a substantial inhibitory effect on the degradation of SMT and CBZ. The degradation intermediates and transformation pathways of SMT and CBZ by UV/NO3- system were further elucidated. The results showed that the main reaction pathways were bond-breaking reaction, hydroxylation, and nitration/nitrosation reaction. The acute toxicity of most of the intermediates generated during SMT and CBZ degradation was reduced after UV/NO3- treatment. After treatment of SMT and CBZ in UV/nitrate system, the DBPs generated in subsequent chlorination were mainly trichloromethane and a small amount of nitrogen-containing DBPs. After bromine ions were introduced in UV/NO3- system, a large amount of the originally generated trichloromethane was converted to tribromomethane.
Enhanced degradation of emerging contaminants by Far-UVC photolysis of peracetic acid: Synergistic effect and mechanisms

Abstract:Krypton chloride (KrCl*) excimer lamps (222 nm) are used as a promising irradiation source to drive ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) in water treatment. In this study, the UV 222 /peracetic acid (PAA) process is implemented as a novel UV-AOPs for the degradation of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water. The results demonstrate that UV 222 /PAA process exhibits excellent degradation performance for carbamazepine (CBZ), with a removal rate of 90.8% within 45 min. Notably, the degradation of CBZ in the UV 222 /PAA process (90.8%) was significantly higher than that in the UV 254 /PAA process (15.1%) at the same UV dose. The UV 222 /PAA process exhibits superior electrical energy per order (EE/O) performance while reducing resource consumption associated with the high-energy UV 254 /PAA process. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection confirm that HO• play a dominant role in the reaction. The contributions of direct photolysis, HO•, and other active species (RO• and 1 O 2 ) are estimated to be 5%, 88%, and 7%, respectively. In addition, the effects of Cl − , HCO 3 − , and humic acid (HA) on the degradation of CBZ are evaluated. The presence of relatively low concentrations of Cl − , HCO 3 − , and HA can inhibit CBZ degradation. The UV 222 /PAA oxidation process could also effectively degrade several other ECs (i.e., iohexol, sulfamethoxazole, acetochlor, ibuprofen), indicating the potential application of this process in pollutant removal. These findings will propel the development of the UV 222 /PAA process and provide valuable insights for its application in water treatment.

Reactive Oxygen Species Generated in Situ During Carbamazepine Photodegradation at 222 nm Far-UVC: Unexpected Role of H2O Molecules

Abstract:When 222 nm far-UVC is used to drive AOPs, photolysis emerges as a critical pathway for the degradation of numerous organic micropollutants (OMPs). However, the photodegradation mechanisms of the asymmetrically polarized OMPs at 222 nm remain unclear, potentially posing a knowledge barrier to the applications of far-UVC. This study selected carbamazepine (CBZ), a prevalent aquatic antiepileptic drug that degrades negligibly at 254 nm, to investigate its photodegradation mechanisms at 222 nm. Accelerated CBZ treatment by 222 nm far-UVC was mainly attributed to in situ ROS generation via self-sensitized photodegradation of CBZ. By quenching experiments and EPR tests, •OH radicals were identified as the major contributor to the CBZ photodegradation, whereas O2•- played a minor role. By deoxygenation and solvent exchange experiments, the H2O molecules were demonstrated to play a crucial role in deactivating the excited singlet state of CBZ (1CBZ*) at 222 nm: generating •OH radicals via electron transfer interactions with 1CBZ*. In addition, 1CBZ* could also undergo a photoionization process. The transformation products and pathways of CBZ at 222 nm were proposed, and the toxicities of CBZ's products were predicted. These findings provide valuable insights into OMPs' photolysis with 222 nm far-UVC, revealing more mechanistic details for far-UVC-driven systems.
Degradation and transformation of carbamazepine in aqueous medium under non-thermal plasma oxidation process

Abstract:Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a pharmaceutical compound detected in various water resources. With a view to removing this contaminant, the applicability of non-thermal plasma (NTP) oxidation process has been widely tested in recent years. This study utilized NTP from a dielectric barrier discharge reactor in the treatment of CBZ. NTP on the surface of a water sample containing 25 mg.L-1 of CBZ resulted in a removal efficiency of over 90% with an energy yield of 0.19 g. (kWh)-1. On the other hand, a rapid reduction in pH and an increase of conductivity and nitrate/nitrite ions concentration were observed during the degradation. The applied voltage amplitude significantly affected the removal efficiency and the energy yield as the degradation efficiency was 55%, 70%, and 72% respectively with an applied voltage of 8, 10, and 12 kV. The water matrices containing inorganic anions such as chloride and carbonate ions reduced the removal efficiency by scavenging the reactive species. Accordingly, a reduction in the removal efficiency was observed in tap water. The high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) results revealed that both reactive oxygen and nitrogen species take part in the reaction process which yields many intermediate products including aromatic nitro-products. This study concluded that NTP can effectively degrade CBZ in both pure and tap water, but special attention must be paid to changes in the water quality parameters (pH, conductivity, and nitrate/nitrite ions) and the fate of nitro products.
Novel UV-LED-driven photocatalysis-chlorine activation for carbamazepine degradation by sulfur-doped NH2-MIL 53 (Fe) composites: Electronic modulation effect and the dual role of chlorine

Abstract:Chlorine activation-inefficient and the generation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) has indeed limited the application of UV/chlorine process. In this study, the typical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) NH2-MIL53(Fe) were successfully modified with organic ligands containing sulfur functional groups and applied to construct a novel UV-LED-driven heterogeneous chlorine activation system. The generation of intermediate energy levels and the charge redistribution effect on Fe-S bond facilitated the excitation of electrons and realized the effective separation of photohole (hvb+) and photoelectron (ecb-). The involvement of S-NH2-MIL53(Fe) improved the efficiency of UV-LED/chlorine process by 6 times. The effective activation of HOCl/OCl- by hvb+ and ecb- significantly enhanced the yield of HO· and Cl·. More importantly, HOCl/OCl- played a dual role in UV-LED/chlorine/S-NH2-MIL53(Fe) process as a precursor for the generation of free radicals and a catalyst for the enhancement of HO· yield, which could achieve efficient removal of the target pollutants at lower chlorine doses. In addition, the presence of low-valent sulfur species and ecb- accelerated the cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III) and in-situ generation of HO· and Cl·. The known generation of DBPs in UV-LED/chlorine/S-NH2-MIL53(Fe) process decreased by 37.9% compared to UV-LED/chlorine process. Developing novel UV-LED/chlorine/S-NH2-MIL53(Fe) processes provided a reliable strategy to efficiently purify actual micro-polluted water bodies.

Abstract:Breakpoint chlorination can be commonly observed in the chlorination of water treatments when ammonia is present. In this study, it was found that breakpoint chlorination can remarkably eliminate a ubiquitous and chlorine-refractory micropollutant, carbamazepine (CBZ), with the removal of 72% at neutral condition. At neutral pH, low CBZ elimination was observed at a chlorine/ammonia molar ratio (Cl/N) of 1.0 and higher CBZ elimination was observed as Cl/N ratio increased from 1.0 to 1.6 (breakpoint), indicating that CBZ elimination was closely related to the generation and decomposition of chloramines. The chloramines generation and decomposition rates were affected by the pH, so that the CBZ elimination rate was highest at pH 7.0 and lower in acidic and basic solutions (pH 5.5 and pH 9.5, respectively). The CBZ elimination at pH 7.0 was 72.4% after 10 min of breakpoint chlorination, while reaction times about 30 min and 60 min were required to achieve the same elimination at pH 5.5 and pH 9.5, respectively. Breakpoint chlorination of CBZ was strongly suppressed by radical scavenger tBuOH and moderately suppressed by N2 purging, the inhibiting ratios being 87.7% and 27.8% at breakpoint, respectively. Electron spin resonance experiments suggested that unidentified radicals were generated by breakpoint chlorination. The OH and unidentified radical species contributions to CBZ elimination were <23.7% and >76.3%, respectively, when a pseudo steady state breakpoint chlorination was performed in a microinjection system with nitrobenzene as OH probe. Although CBZ were efficiently eliminated, breakpoint chlorination of CBZ generated adsorbable organic chlorine. The cytotoxicity of the CBZ solution was therefore increased by breakpoint chlorination, suggesting that biological risk caused by the breakpoint chlorination of micropollutants should be taken into consideration.

Abstract:An advanced electrochemical oxidation process (electro-peroxone) involving a dual electrode system was developed to degrade recalcitrant carbamazepine (CBZ). During this electro-peroxone (E-peroxone) process, ozone was electrochemically produced by anodic oxidation of water in a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) cell and H2O2 was simultaneously generated by the sparged O2 using a carbon-polytetrafluorethylene (C-PTFE) cathode. The O3 and H2O2 electrogenerated in situ synergistically produce hydroxyl radicals (OH), which are much more easily oxidized than O3. As a result, the removal efficiencies of CBZ and its TOC reached 99.8% and 97.6% after 15min and 90min of E-peroxone treatment, respectively, these figures remaining stable after multiple tests. The E-peroxone process is therefore a promising and effective method for degrading ozone-refractory organic contaminants in wastewater.
Efficient Degradation of Carbamazepine by Sulfate Doped LDO/CN in the Photo-Assisted Peroxymonosulfate System

Abstract:Improving the utilization rate of active sites through rational design of material structure is considered to be an effective way to enhance the activation efficiency and degradation performance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Co-sulfate anions-induced layered double oxide/carbon nitride (Co-SLDO/CN) was prepared by sulfate anion induction for the rapid degradation of carbamazepine in the photo assisted persulfate system. Graphitic carbon nitride (CN) provided nucleation sites for Co-SLDH to inhibit its aggregation. Sulfate anions induced the material to transform into three-dimensional flower balls, promoting the formation of oxygen defects, which is beneficial for charge separation and thus promotes more electrons to participate in the catalytic reaction. The synergistic effect of visible light/PMS system and oxygen vacancies (Vo) enabled 100 % degradation efficiency of 10 mg/L carbamazepine (CBZ) to be achieved within 10 min. Among them, the electron transfer of Co (III)/Co (II) promoted the decomposition of PMS to generate SO4- center dot, visible light activated Co-SLDO/CN to produce eCB- and hVB+ , and the O2 in the micro area around the oxygen vacancy captured electrons to generate O2 center dot  and 1O2. Seventeen intermediates, such as 10, 11-dihydroxy-carbamazepine, and possible CBZ degradation pathways were proposed, and the overall toxicity was found reduced through experiments, which was consistent with eco-SAR software prediction. After four cycles, the degradation rate of CBZ remained at 100 %, and the system showed good efficiency while degrading various PPCPs, indicating practical application potential.

Abstract:Treating wastewater to augment surface water can be a practicable solution to water scarcity, while the residual contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and inorganic ions put forward new requirements to the treatment methods. Electrochemical chlorine process (EC/Cl 2 ) utilizes the remaining Cl − in wastewater to generate free chlorine and radicals, which could be further improved in conjunction with LED UV 275nm irradiation (UV-EC/Cl 2 ). Compared to UV only and EC/Cl 2 , UV-EC/Cl 2 could effectively decompose the selected CECs at higher rates due to the much higher yield of reactive chlorine species (Cl • , ClO • , and Cl 2 •− ). A MATLAB R2021a programming method was developed to estimate the order of magnitude of these radicals, and Cl 2 •− was the most abundant radical. In the UV-EC/Cl 2 system, CECs with phenolic or aniline moieties were mainly degraded by electrochemical oxidation (EC), ClO • , and Cl 2 •− ; and the CECs with weakly electron-donating moieties were predominately decomposed by EC, • OH, and Cl • . The degradation pathways of levofloxacin, diclofenac, carbamazepine (CBZ), and ibuprofen were proposed according to the transformation products (TPs) detected by LC/Q-TOF-MS. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of spiked CBZ in real water samples, that were discharged to surface water, was significantly reduced by UV-EC/Cl 2 . Interestingly, the electrical energy per order (E E/O ) for carbamazepine decomposition by LED UV 275nm -EC/Cl 2 (1.46 kWh m −3 order −1 ) is lower than that by UV/Cl 2 , EC/Cl 2 , and UV 254nm -EC/Cl 2 . The results indicate that UV-EC/Cl 2 could be used as a promising method to remediate CECs during the tertiary treatment and reuse of wastewater for augmenting surface water.
