Abstract:Background: The association between ambient temperature and mortality has been well documented worldwide. However, limited data are available on nonfatal health outcomes, such as emergency department visits (EDVs), particularly from China.Objectives: To examine the temperature-EDV association in 12 Chinese cities; and to assess the modification effects by region, gender and age.Methods: Daily meteorological data and non-accidental EDVs were collected during 2011-2014. Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear model was applied to examine the temperature-lag-EDV association in each city. The effect estimates were pooled using multivariate meta-analysis at the national and regional level. Stratified analyses were performed by gender and age-groups. Sensitivity analyses adjusting for air pollution and relative humidity were conducted.Results: A total of 4,443,127 EDVs were collected from the 12 cities. Both cold and hot temperatures were associated with increased risk of EDVs, with minimum-mortality temperature located at 64th percentile of temperature. The effect of cold temperature appeared on day 2 and persisted until day 30, causing a cumulative relative risk (RR) of 1.80 (1.54, 2.11). The effect of hot temperature appeared immediately and lasted until day 3, with a cumulative RR of 1.15 (1.03,1.29). The effect of temperature on EDVs was similar in male and female but was attenuated with increasing age. The effect of cold temperature on EDVs was greater in southern areas of the country whereas the hot effect was greater in northern cities. The association was robust to a large range of sensitivity analyses.Conclusions: In China, there is a U-shaped association between temperature and risk of EDVs that is independent of air pollution and humidity. The temperature-EDV association varies with latitude and age-groups but is not affected by gender. Forecasting models for hospital emergency departments may be improved if temperature is included as an independent predictor. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The associations of air pollution and meteorological factors with the outpatient visits of urticaria remain poorly studied. This study aimed to assess the association between air pollution, meteorological factors, and daily outpatient visits for urticaria in Shijiazhuang, China, during 2014–2019. Daily recordings of air pollutant concentrations, meteorological data, and outpatient visits data for urticaria were collected during the 6 years. Descriptive research methods were used to describe the distribution characteristics and demographic features of urticaria. A combination of the generalized linear regression model (GLM) and distribution lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to evaluate the lag association between environmental factors and daily outpatient visits for urticaria. Stratified analyses by gender (male; female) and age ( 39 years) were further conducted. The dose–response relationship between daily urticaria visits and CO, NO 2 , O 3 , temperature, and relative humidity was nonlinear. High concentrations of CO, NO 2 , O 3 , and high temperatures increased the risk of urticaria outpatient visits. The maximum cumulative association of high concentrations of CO, NO 2 , and O 3 was lag 0–14 days (CO: RR = 1.10, 95%CI: 1.06, 1.31; NO 2 : RR = 1.09, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.08; O 3 : RR = 1.16, 95%CI: 1.08, 1.25), and high temperatures was lag 0–7 days (RR = 1.27, 95%CI: 1.14, 1.41). Low concentrations of NO 2 , O 3 , and high humidity, on the other hand, act as protective factors for urticaria outpatient. The maximum cumulative association of low concentrations of NO 2 was the 0-day lag (RR = 0.97, 95%CI: 0.95, 0.99), O 3 was lag 0–5 days (RR = 0.94, 95%CI: 0.88, 0.99), and high humidity was lag 0–10 days (RR = 0.93, 95%CI: 0.89, 0.98). Stratified analyses showed that the risk of urticaria outpatient visits was higher for the males and in the < 18 years age group. In conclusion, we found that the development of urticaria in Shijiazhuang has a distinct seasonal and cyclical nature. Air pollutants and meteorological factors had varying degrees of influence on the risk of urticaria outpatient visits. This study provides indirect evidence for a link between air pollution, meteorological factors, and urticaria outpatient visits.

Abstract:Previous studies have reported regional variations in the relationship between ambient temperature and dermatitis, which therefore remain inconclusive. This study aimed to understand the short-term effects of ambient temperature in outpatients with dermatitis in Xinxiang. Routine data of dermatitis outpatient visits between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2018 were acquired from the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinxiang Medical University. A distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) in combination with a generalized additive model (GAM) was applied to investigate the acute impact of ambient temperature on dermatitis outpatients. Two stratified analyses based on age and sex were conducted to explore their potential modification effects. A total of 18,064 dermatitis outpatient records were retrieved during the study period. The relationship between ambient temperature and dermatitis outpatients was found to be nonlinear; exposure-response curves were approximately "J" shaped. The risk of dermatitis outpatient increased with a corresponding elevation in temperature from 11.5 to 27.5°C. However, the significance was lost when the temperature exceeded the given range. Stratified analysis demonstrated higher sensitivity to temperature in females than in males, and the young groups (<15 years) might be sensitive to heat temperature. This study provides first-hand epidemiological evidence demonstrating a higher risk of dermatitis outpatient visits associated with moderately higher temperatures. The outcomes of this study create awareness among citizens to take the necessary precautions to prevent the adverse effects of moderate heat temperature during early summer and autumn seasons.

Association Between PM2.5 Concentrations and the Daily Number of Outpatient Visits for Urticaria in Beijing City

Abstract:Objective To investigate the association between concentrations of environmental air pollutants and the daily number of outpatient visits for urticaria in Beijing. Methods Time series analysis in combination with distributed lag non?linear model(DLNM)and Spearman′s rank correlation test was used to analyze the association between PM2.5 concentrations and the daily number of outpatient visits for urticaria. All effect estimates were expressed as a risk ratio(RR)for the daily number of outpatient visits with an interquartile range(IQR)increase of 82.8 μg/m3 in PM2.5. Results From January 1st 2013 to June 30th 2014, the daily average PM2.5 concentration, temperature, relative humidity and number of visits for urticaria were 89.3 μg/m3, 12.7 ℃, 51.9% and 27.3 respectively. Spearman′s rank correlation test showed that the daily average PM2.5 concentration and number of visits for urticaria were correlated with daily mean temperature(rs =-0.21, 0.36, respectively, P < 0.05)and relative humidity(rs = 0.49, 0.31, respectively, P < 0.05), but no correlation was observed between daily average PM2.5 concentrations and daily number of visits for urticaria(rs=0.01, P>0.05). There was no significant correlation between daily number of outpatient visits for urticaria and daily PM2.5 concentration lagged by 0-14 days(RR=1, 95%CI:0.89, 1.13). After potential confounding factors were adjusted, an 82.8μg/m3 increase in daily PM2.5 concentration at lag 0-20 days was significantly associated with a 22%(95%CI:3%, 46%)increase in daily number of outpatient visits for urticaria, suggesting that the lagged effect of PM2.5 was obviously increased. Conclusion The association between PM2.5 concentrations and the number of visits for urticaria is easily affected by meteorological factors and biological confounding factors, and relative humidity and mean temperature are both positively correlated with the number of visits for urticaria.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Many studies have explored the association between temperature and atopic dermatitis (AD); however, the results are inconsistent. We used a quasi-Poisson function fitted to a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to evaluate the association between daily average temperature and AD outpatient visits from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2019, in Lanzhou, China. We found that the exposure-response association curve was inversely "s-shaped," low-temperature effects occurred at a lag of 11 days and then lasted for 10 days, and high-temperature effects occurred on the current day and then significantly decreased. Both low and high ambient temperatures can increase the risk of outpatient visits. Compared with median temperature (12.89°C), the cumulative relative risk (RR) of extreme high temperature and moderate–high temperature were 1.847 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.613, 2.114) and 1.447 (95% CI: 1.298, 1.614), respectively, at lag0–7 days, and the cumulative RRs of extremely low temperature and moderate–low temperature were 1.004 (95% CI: 0.904, 1.115) and 1.056 (95% CI: 0.925, 1.205), respectively, at lag0–21 days. Females were more sensitive to high temperatures than males, and high or low temperatures had significant effects on children ≤14 years of age.</p>

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Many studies have examined the association between ambient temperature and mortality. However, less evidence is available on the temperature effects on gender- and age-specific emergency department visits, especially in developing countries. In this study, we examined the short-term effects of daily ambient temperature on emergency department visits (ED visits) in Shanghai.METHODS:Daily ED visits and daily ambient temperatures between January 2006 and December 2011 were analyzed. After controlling for secular and seasonal trends, weather, air pollution and other confounding factors, a Poisson generalized additive model (GAM) was used to examine the associations between ambient temperature and gender- and age-specific ED visits. A moving average lag model was used to evaluate the lag effects of temperature on ED visits.RESULTS:Low temperature was associated with an overall 2.76% (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.73 to 3.80) increase in ED visits per 1°C decrease in temperature at Lag1 day, 2.03% (95% CI: 1.04 to 3.03) and 2.45% (95% CI: 1.40 to 3.52) for males and females. High temperature resulted in an overall 1.78% (95% CI: 1.05 to 2.51) increase in ED visits per 1°C increase in temperature on the same day, 1.81% (95% CI: 1.08 to 2.54) among males and 1.75% (95% CI: 1.03 to 2.49) among females. The cold effect appeared to be more acute among younger people aged <45 years, whereas the effects were consistent on individuals aged ≥65 years. In contrast, the effects of high temperature were relatively consistent over all age groups.CONCLUSIONS:These findings suggest a significant association between ambient temperature and ED visits in Shanghai. Both cold and hot temperatures increased the relative risk of ED visits. This knowledge has the potential to advance prevention efforts targeting weather-sensitive conditions.
Changes in ambient temperature increase hospital outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis in Xinxiang, China

Abstract:Abstract Background The effect of ambient temperature on allergic rhinitis (AR) remains unclear. Accordingly, this study aimed to explore the relationship between ambient temperature and the risk of AR outpatients in Xinxiang, China. Method Daily data of outpatients for AR, meteorological conditions, and ambient air pollution in Xinxiang, China were collected from 2015 to 2018. The lag-exposure-response relationship between daily mean temperature and the number of hospital outpatient visits for AR was analyzed by distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM). Humidity, long-time trends, day of the week, public holidays, and air pollutants including sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) were controlled as covariates simultaneously. Results A total of 14,965 AR outpatient records were collected. The relationship between ambient temperature and AR outpatients was generally M-shaped. There was a higher risk of AR outpatient when the temperature was 1.6–9.3 °C, at a lag of 0–7 days. Additionally, the positive association became significant when the temperature rose to 23.5–28.5 °C, at lag 0–3 days. The effects were strongest at the 25th (7 °C) percentile, at lag of 0–7 days (RR: 1.32, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.05–1.67), and at the 75th (25 °C) percentile at a lag of 0–3 days (RR: 1.15, 95% CI: 1.02–1.29), respectively. Furthermore, men were more sensitive to temperature changes than women, and the younger groups appeared to be more influenced. Conclusions Both mild cold and mild hot temperatures may significantly increase the risk of AR outpatients in Xinxiang, China. These findings could have important public health implications for the occurrence and prevention of AR .

Abstract:Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) induced a rapid breakdown of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns 4,5P2) and phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PtdIns 4P) in GH3 cells labeled to isotopic equilibrium with [3H]inositol. Within 10 sec of the addition of TRH (1 microM), there was a maximal 60% decrease in PtdIns 4,5P2 and 40% decrease in PtdIns 4P. Breakdown of phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) occurred only after a lag of 30 sec. While the reduced levels of the polyphosphoinositides had almost returned to control values by 5 min, the GH3 cell PtdIns content remained at around 85% of controls for at least 2 hr. Both phosphatidic acid (PA) and 1,2-diacylglycerol levels increased in response to TRH in [32P]PO4- and [3H]glycerol-labeled GH3 cells. 1,2-Diacylglycerol accumulated in a biphasic manner with an early peak 10 sec after addition of the peptide. This early rise in 1,2-diacylglycerol levels coincided in time and was equivalent in lipid mass with the decrease in the polyphosphoinositide content, suggesting the involvement of a phospholipase C-type enzyme. 1,2-Diacylglycerol levels subsequently fell toward control values and, after 3 min of treatment with TRH, rose again to levels 50% above normal. PA levels reached a peak value approximately 2-fold above normal 1 min after the addition of TRH. At all times after TRH addition, the bulk of the inositol phospholipid lost was recovered as 1,2-diacylglycerol. These results suggest that TRH stimulates a cycle of events in which the breakdown of the polyphosphoinositides, PtdIns 4,5P2 and, perhaps, PtdIns 4P by a phospholipase C enzyme could be the initiating event.
The correlation between daily temperature, diurnal temperature range, and asthma hospital admissions in Lanzhou city, 2013-2020

Abstract:Background: With the backdrop of global climate change, the impact of climate change on respiratory diseases like asthma is receiving increasing attention. However, the effects of temperature and diurnal temperature range (DTR) on asthma are complex, and understanding these effects across different seasons, age groups, and sex is of utmost importance. Methods: This study utilized asthma hospitalization data from Lanzhou, China, and implemented a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) to investigate the relationship between temperature and DTR and asthma hospitalizations. It considered differences in the effects across various seasons and population subgroups. Results: The study revealed that low temperatures immediately increase the risk of asthma hospitalization (RR = 1.2010, 95% CI: 1.1464, 1.2580), and this risk persists for a period of time. Meanwhile, both high and low DTR were associated with an increased risk of asthma hospitalization. Lower temperatures (RR = 2.9798, 95% CI: 1.1154, 7.9606) were associated with higher asthma risk in the warm season, while in the cold season, the risk significantly rose for the general population (RR = 3.6867, 95% CI: 1.7494, 7.7696), females (RR = 7.2417, 95% CI: 2.7171, 19.3003), and older individuals (RR = 18.5425, 95% CI: 5.1436, 66.8458). In the warm season, low DTR conditions exhibited a significant association with asthma hospitalization risk in males (RR = 7.2547, 95% CI: 1.2612, 41.7295) and adults aged 15-64 (RR = 9.9494, 95% CI: 2.2723, 43.5643). Children also exhibited noticeable risk within specific DTR ranges. In the cold season, lower DTR increases the risk of asthma hospitalization for the general population (RR = 3.1257, 95% CI: 1.4004, 6.9767). High DTR significantly increases the risk of asthma hospitalization in adults (RR = 5.2563, 95% CI: 2.4131, 11.4498). Conclusion: This study provides crucial insights into the complex relationship between temperature, DTR, and asthma hospitalization, highlighting the variations in asthma risk across different seasons and population subgroups.

Abstract:This study assessed the links between daily mean temperature and emergency room (ER) admissions for total and cause-specific cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in Lanzhou, China from 2013 to 2019. A quasi-Poisson Generalized Additive Model (GAM) and a Distributed Lag Non-Linear Model (DLNM) were used to determine the effects of temperature on total and cause-specific cardiovascular emergency visits. The relative risks (RR) at cold (hot) temperatures were calculated by comparing the 5th (95th) centile of temperature with the minimum morbidity temperature (MMT). Exposure–response curves demonstrating an inverted U-shape or an irregular M-shape association were observed between temperature and total and cause-specific CVD. The study found that both cold and hot temperatures had negative impacts on emergency room visits for various cardiovascular diseases. For people with total CVD, heart rhythm disturbances (HRD), or cerebrovascular diseases (CD), females were more sensitive to temperature than males, while for ischemic heart disease (IHD) and heart failure (HF), males were more vulnerable to temperature. The < 65 years old with total CVD, IHD, HRD, or CD was more susceptible to the effects of temperature. The results indicated that the relationship between temperature and total and cause-specific CVD was nonlinear, and susceptibility to temperature varied across disease subtype, gender, and age.

Association between non-optimal temperature and hospitalizations for gout in Anqing, China: a time-series analysis

Abstract:Previous studies have found that non-optimal temperature influences the development of gout, but the results have been inconsistent. The present study aimed to explore the effects of high temperature and high temperature variation on hospitalizations for gout in Anqing, China. We collected daily data on air pollutants, meteorological factors, and hospitalizations for gout between 1January 2016 and 31 December 2020 in Anqing City, China. We used Poisson generalized linear regression model and a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) to explore the relationship of high temperature, diurnal temperature range (DTR), and temperature change between neighboring days (TCN) with hospitalizations for gout. Stratified analysis by gender (male, female) and age (<65 years, ≥65 years) was conducted. Hospitalizations for gout attributed to high temperature, high DTR, and high TCN were also quantified. A total of 8675 hospitalized patients with gout were reported during the study period. We observed that exposure to high temperature was linked with an increased risk of hospitalizations for gout (lag 0, RR: 1.081, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.011, 1.155). Exposure to high DTR was also associated with increased risk of hospitalizations for gout (lag9, RR: 1.017, 95% CI: 1.001,1.035). A large drop in temperature between neighboring days was associated an increased risk of hospitalizations for gout (lag 0–2 days, RR: 1.234, 95% CI: 1.017, 1.493). Stratified analysis results revealed that older adults and men were more sensitive to high-level DTR exposure than their counterparts. Nearly 15% of hospitalizations for gout could be attributable to high temperature (attributable fraction: 14.93%, 95% CI: 5.99%, 22.11%). This study suggests that high temperature and high temperature variation may trigger hospitalizations for gout, indicating that patients with gout need to take proactive actions in the face of days with non-optimal temperature.

Abstract:AbstractEpidemiological studies have revealed associations between several temperature parameters and allergic rhinitis (AR). However, few studies have reported the association of AR with daily temperature variability, which indicates both short-term intra- and interday temperature changes. This study aimed to analyze associations between temperature variability and initial outpatient visits for AR. The analysis was conducted with an over-dispersed Poisson model using daily time-series data on temperature and the number of initial AR outpatients from 2013 to 2015 in Changchun, China. The composite index of temperature variability was derived by calculating the standard deviation of daily minimum temperature and maximum temperature over exposure days. Stratified analysis by season was also conducted. There were 23,344 AR outpatients during the study period. In the total period, per 1 °C increase in temperature variability at 0–2 days (TV0–2), 0–3 days (TV0–3), and 0–4 days (TV0–4) was associated with a 4.03% (95% CI: 0.91–7.25%), 4.40% (95% CI: 0.95–7.97%), and 4.12% (95% CI: 0.38–8.01%) increase in the number of AR outpatients, respectively. When stratified by season, the strongest effect was shown in spring. Our results suggested that temperature variability was associated with increased initial outpatient visits for AR, which may provide helpful implications for formulating public health policies to reduce adverse health impacts of unstable temperature.

Effect of Daily Mean Temperature on Respiratory Hospital Admission

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To quantitatively evaluate the effects of daily mean temperature on respiratory diseases.METHODS:Based on the data of daily hospital admissions for respiratory diseases, meteorological parameters and air pollution in Shanghai between January 2006 and December 2011, we used a generalized additive model (GAM) to explore the effects of daily mean temperature on hospital admissions on respiratory diseases adjusted for the secular trend, seasonal trend, day of week and other confounders.RESULTS:A J-shaped relationship was found between daily mean temperature and respiratory disease and the optimum temperature (OT) corresponding to low risk of respiratory hospital admissions was about 25 °C. For cold effects over lag 0-30 days, the overall excess risk (ER) of hospital admission associated with 1 °C below the OT was 3.00% (95% CI: 2.54%-3.45%), 3.00% (95% CI: 2.55%-3.45%) and 3.02% (95% CI:2.51%-3.49%) for overall, males and females, respectively. For hot effects over lag 0-30 days, the overall excess risk (ER) was 2.15% (95% CI: 0.67%-3.66%), 1.86% (95% CI: 0.39%-3.34%) and 2.57% (95% CI: 0.82%-4.36%) for overall, males and females, respectively. The optimum temperature between daily mean temperature and respiratory disease were 14 °C, 20 °C, 25 °C and 28 °C in different age groups. The effect of low temperature increased with age for the people above 45 years old; however the effect of high temperature was significant for the people under 65 years old.CONCLUSIONS:Both of higher temperature and lower temperature resulted in ER of respiratory hospital admissions increase with lag effects. The effects of lower temperature lagged longer and stronger than higher temperature. Different age group and gender shows different effects.
Assessing the impact of temperature on acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease hospitalizations in residents of Panzhihua City: a multi-districts study using a distributed lag non-linear model

Abstract:Background: Temperature fluctuations can impact the occurrence and progression of respiratory system diseases. However, the current understanding of the impact of temperature on acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) remains limited. Therefore, our study aims to investigate the relationship between daily mean temperature (DMT) and the risk of AECOPD hospitalizations within Panzhihua City. Methods: We systematically collected data on AECOPD hospitalizations at Panzhihua Central Hospital from 2015 to 2020 and meteorological factors across Panzhihua City's districts. A two-stage analysis method was used to establish a distributed lag non-linear model to elucidate the influence of DMT on the frequency of admissions for AECOPD. Subgroup analyses were conducted by gender and age to identify populations potentially susceptible to the impact of DMT. Results: A total of 5299 AECOPD hospitalizations cases were included. The DMT and the risk of AECOPD hospitalization showed a non-linear exposure-response pattern, with low temperatures exacerbating the risk of hospitalizations. The lag effects of low temperature and relatively low temperature peaked at 2th day, with the lag effects disappearing at 16-17 days. Females and elders aged ≥ 65 years were more sensitive to effects of low and relatively low temperature at lag 0-4 days, while male AECOPD patients exhibited longer lasting lag effects. Conclusions: Low temperatures are associated with an increased risk of AECOPD hospitalizations. Females or elders aged ≥ 65 years with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should pay more attention to taking protective measures in cold environments. These findings are crucial for the formulation of public health policies, as they will help significantly alleviate the burden of AECOPD and improve respiratory health in the face of climate challenges.
Effects of Meteorological Factors on Asthma Hospital Visits in Haikou City, China

Abstract:The effects of meteorological conditions on asthma in Haikou, a tropical city in China, are still unclear. This study aimed to determine the relationships between meteorological factors and the number of asthma hospital visits in Haikou. A Poisson generalized additive model combined with a distributed lag nonlinear model is used to model the nonlinear exposure–response relationship between the daily mean temperature and asthma hospital visits. The daily mean pressure and air quality are used as covariates and simultaneously control the mixed effects of holiday effects, weekend effects, and long-term trends. The results indicate that there is a significant statistical relationship between the daily mean temperature and asthma hospital visits, which shows an inverted J-shaped relationship. When the daily mean temperature is below the reference value (29.3 °C), the number of asthma patients increases considerably, and there is a marked lag in the prevalence of asthma. The longest lag is 9 days, and the most pronounced impact of the daily mean temperature on the number of asthma hospital visits can be found when the lag time is 1–4 days. When the daily mean temperature is 10 °C, the cumulative effect of the relative risk of asthma is 2.204, an increase of 120.4% (95% CI 1.294–3.755). If the daily mean temperature is below the 2.5th percentile value (14.8 °C), the relative risk significantly increases by more than 5.3% (95% CI 1.000–1.110), and the longest lasting impact time is 5 days. This indicates that increases in asthma hospital visits in Haikou, China, are significantly correlated with low-temperature weather. We suggest that preventive measures for asthma should take low-temperature weather into account. Additionally, we also found that extremely high temperatures have a certain impact on the increase in asthma hospital visits, but that the correlation is not significant.

Abstract:Background: The seasonality of varicella and herpes zoster has been widely observed, but there is limited evidence on their associations with ambient temperature.Objective: The associations between ambient temperature and outpatient visits for varicella and herpes zoster were examined.Methods: We collected daily outpatient visit data for varicella (N = 3520) and herpes zoster (N = 6614) from a major hospital in Shanghai, China, from 2008 to 2010. We adopted the generalized additive model in time-series analysis to investigate the short-term associations between temperature and outpatient visits for varicella and herpes zoster after controlling for seasonal trends, day of the week, and humidity.Results: A 1 degrees C increase in daily mean temperature was associated with a 1.33% (95% confidence interval 0.93%-1.74%) decrease in outpatient visits for varicella whereas it was associated with a 2.18% (95% confidence interval 1.90%-2.46%) increase in outpatient visits for herpes zoster.Limitations: Only 1 hospital was included and we did not control for individual-level risk factors.Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that temperature variation might be an important risk factor for varicella and herpes zoster in China.

Abstract:Abstract Objective This study evaluated the effects of extreme temperatures on hospital admissions for respiratory diseases (RD) in a semi-arid region in the Northwest of China. Methods Distributed lag non-linear model was constructed and stratified analysis by gender and age was performed. Results The exposure-response curve between temperature and RD hospital admissions was almost W-shaped. Either extremely cold temperatures or moderately cold temperatures presented a short-term acute harmful effect, and the relative risks were higher among males (1.976, 95%CI: 1.773-2.203; 1.242, 95% CI: 1.203-1.282) and the elderly (2.363, 95% CI: 1.724-3.240; 1.267, 95% CI: 1.154-1.390). Both extreme and moderately hot temperatures had higher risks among females (2.040, 95% CI: 1.815-2.292; 1.328, 95% CI: 1.276-1.381). Conclusions The relationship between air temperature and RD hospital admissions was non-linear. Vulnerable populations varied according to extreme temperature conditions.

Abstract:Objectives: To explore the association between weather conditions and hospital admissions for pneumonia in Shanghai. Design: A time-series analysis was performed for a period of 4 years (January 2008-December 2011). A generalised additive model was used to calculate the relative risks. Setting: Shanghai, China. Participants: All daily hospital admissions for pneumonia were obtained from the Shanghai health insurance system between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2011 (n=99 403). Results: The relationship between the mean temperature and pneumonia hospital admissions followed a V-shaped curve, with an optimum temperature (OT) at 13 degrees C. When the mean temperature was below the OT, a 1 degrees C decrease corresponded to a 4.88% (95% CI 2.71% to 7.09%) and 5.34% (95% CI 2.04% to 8.74%) increase in pneumonia hospital admissions in lag 4 using a single-day lag structure and lag 0-7 using a multiday lag structure. When the mean temperature >= OT, no adverse effects from the temperature on pneumonia hospital admissions were found. The magnitude of the effects of temperature varied across gender and age groups. Hospitalisations for pneumonia increased by 15.99% (95% CI 0.06% to 34.46%) in the cold period. Conclusions: Cold temperature may be one of the important risk factors for pneumonia hospitalisations. Prevention programmes are needed to reduce the impact of cold temperature on pneumonia hospitalisations such as developing a weather warning system within a wide public health context.

Abstract:Although numerous studies have linked asthma to air temperature and pollution, few studies have examined their interactive effects on asthma outpatient visits. This study investigated how air pollutants and their interactions with temperature affect asthma outpatient visits in a city in northern Chinaduring the time period 2018 - 2020 . . As the results, 24,163 asthma outpatients were recorded, a 10-μg/m 3 increase in PM 10 , PM 2.5 , SO 2 , and NO 2 concentrations was associated with significant increases in visits of 3.47% (95% CI: 2.35%–4.60%), 0.83% (95% CI: 0.36%–1.30%), 3.17% (95% CI: 1.47%–4.90%), and 8.90% (95% CI: 6.09%–11.79%), respectively. The effect was stronger in females than males, and stronger in the elderly (≥65 years) than among the young. The interaction between low temperatures and high air pollution levels significantly increased the number of asthma outpatient visits. This study emphasizesthe importance of reducing air pollution in order to lessen the effects of cold.

Abstract:Background: Few studies have examined the effect of ambient temperature on upper urolithiasis in developing countries, with even fewer considering individual factors. Methods: The present study analyzed data on emergency department visits for upper urolithiasis from three hospital sites of a large hospital in Hefei, China, during 2016-2020. Data on environmental factors during the same period were also analyzed. A time series analysis employing a generalized Poisson regression model (GPRM) combined with a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was conducted to evaluate the effect of ambient temperature on the number of emergency department visits for upper urolithiasis. Results: We found that ambient temperatures above 9 °C were positively associated with the frequency of upper urolithiasis visits, with the relationship being most significant on the current day and with a one-day lag. In the single-day lag effect, the most significant relative risk (RR) for mild heat (75th percentile) and high heat (95th percentile) was 1.229 (95% CI: 1.100-1.373) and 1.337 (95% CI: 1.134-1.577), respectively. The cumulative lag effect was significantly higher than the single-day lag effect, with maximum relative risks (RRs) of 1.779 (95% CI: 1.356-2.335) and 2.498 (95% CI: 1.688-3.697), respectively. The maximum lag time was 7 days. RRs were also higher among women and individuals aged 30-44 years. Conclusions: Increased ambient temperature is a risk factor for upper urolithiasis, and there is a hysteresis effect. Women and individuals aged 30-44 years are the most susceptible.
