Abstract:Many reactive blacks 3 have doubled in price during the eight months since March 2013 and will increase again over the coming months. The prices of certain colors have increased by 30% and are expected to increase further due to shortages of intermediates and increased environmental costs for producers. In the case of acid dyes, there are a number of makers who have stopped producing them due to the shortage of raw materials, and if they started, they would face production caps. This situation is attracting attention from many quarters as one might expect. In late November 2013, Francesco March, Director General of EURATEX 4 in Brussels, solicited background information. In Italy, textile companies are experiencing price increases that could rise by 50% and the reason appears to be the lack of pre-materials used in the composition of the colorants; such pre-materials come from China according to EURATEX. In late November and December, representatives from the SDC visited both India and China, for several SDC-related reasons, some of which provided greater insight into this issue. Manufacturers in India and China say that their prices increased dramatically and will rise further before they plateau. Suggestions that prices might fall in future were rare, so the current supply of dyes will become increasingly expensive with no likelihood of returning to earlier prices. While reasons for price increases are generally the same in China and India, responses to the underlying problems differ slightly perhaps in the two regions. The reasons are threefold: cost of intermediates, a need to regain sustainable business fi nances, and environmental pressures. The last is the most evident factor when one visits manufacturing sites. If you conceive of cheap factories relentlessly polluting the environment that are accepted as consequence of economic growth, then to put it bluntly, you are simply out of date. Current Far Eastern dye production is clean and becoming cleaner as the world and local governments demand. At this point, the operations become especially interesting. India and China are investing both to modernize and to invest in the future. For example, in China we visited a £ 20 million investment in a new effl uent treatment site-not just a plant. Some might say that language is a barrier to understanding China. Others may state that cultural understanding is required to work with China, which also is true. Understanding and comprehension of scale, however, also is required and sometimes this requires one to experience the scale of things in the Far East, particularly in China. One could think of it as a toy car designer suddenly working on a full size aircraft carrier design, or a school sports day organizer suddenly being asked to plan the Olympics. With such immense scale come very different manufacturing economics. Effl uent treatment by a third party is an enormous expense on such a scale that it makes sound fi nancial sense to invest in this one ’ s self.
