Abstract:There is growing evidence of the high transmission potential of COVID-19 through virus-laden aerosols. Because aerosols are inhaled in various concentrations, an overall assessment of transmission risks at different indoor scales is crucial. However, a comprehensive risk assessment method that evaluates the direct link between short-range and room-scale zones is still lacking. In this paper, a risk assessment model combining both short-range and room-scale effects is developed to obtain effective reproduction number in confined indoor environments, called Turbulent Jet Wells Riley (TJWR) model. Combined with the viral load data and aerosol generation data of different human respiratory activities, the Monte Carlo simulation method is applied to calculate the quanta emission rate, which further provides the input parameters of the TJWR model. Three known outbreaks (Hangzhou banquet hall X, Guangzhou restaurant Y, and Hong Kong restaurant Z, China) are chosen to validate the TJWR model. Results show that the TJWR model is more efficient than the original Wells-Riley model. The average relative error of the TJWR model ranges between 9% and 44%, while for the Wells-Riley model, it ranges between 57% and 78%. The TJWR model also proves that infection risk assessments using the well-mixed assumption can systematically underestimate the transmission risk for those close to the source. Additionally, there is a significant positive linear correlation between the total number of exposed individuals at the short-range and the effective reproduction number. This newly developed TJWR model has great potential for rapid and real-time overall airborne transmission risk assessment in buildings and cities.
CFD modelling of indoor aerosol transport to infer airborne SARS-CoV-2 transmission risk

Abstract:Background Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurs predominantly indoors, where airborne transmission is a significant route of infection [1]. While respiratory droplets (> 5 μm) quickly settle to the ground, aerosol particles (< 5 μm) can remain airborne up to hours. Their transport can e.g. be augmented by air-conditioning or result in accumulation of virusladen aerosols in particular regions of a closed air space shared with others. An infectious dose might build up over typical meeting times in distances much larger than 2m away from infected individuals. In such scenarios, not only short-range dynamics and evaporation of droplets are important but also long-range convective transport, turbulent dispersion and long-term local accumulation of virus-laden aerosols in distant areas become a key factor for indirect and airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from person to person. Thus, understanding aerosol transport in indoor environments is indispensable for controlling the ongoing pandemic and to help preventing future ones involving airborne transmission. However, bio-aerosol transport dynamics in indoor environments are notoriously complex and therefore not straightforward to model and assess.

Indoor Model Simulation for COVID-19 Transport and Exposure

Abstract:Transmission of respiratory viruses is a complex process involving emission, deposition in the airways, and infection. Inhalation is often the most relevant transmission mode in indoor environments. For severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the risk of inhalation transmission is not yet fully understood. Here, we used an indoor aerosol model combined with a regional inhaled deposited dose model to examine the indoor transport of aerosols from an infected person with novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to a susceptible person and assess the potential inhaled dose rate of particles. Two scenarios with different ventilation rates were compared, as well as adult female versus male recipients. Assuming a source strength of 10 viruses/s, in a tightly closed room with poor ventilation (0.5 h−1), the respiratory tract deposited dose rate was 140–350 and 100–260 inhaled viruses/hour for males and females; respectively. With ventilation at 3 h−1 the dose rate was only 30–90 viruses/hour. Correcting for the half-life of SARS-CoV-2 in air, these numbers are reduced by a factor of 1.2–2.2 for poorly ventilated rooms and 1.1–1.4 for well-ventilated rooms. Combined with future determinations of virus emission rates, the size distribution of aerosols containing the virus, and the infectious dose, these results could play an important role in understanding the full picture of potential inhalation transmission in indoor environments.

Abstract:A numerical framework for the 'real-time' estimation of the infection risk from airborne diseases (e.g., SARS-CoV-2) in indoor spaces such as hospitals, restaurants, cinemas or teaching rooms is proposed. The developed model is based on the use of computational fluid dynamics as a pre-processor to obtain the time-averaged ventilation pattern inside a room, and a post-processing tool for the computation of the dispersion of sprays and aerosols emitted by its occupants in 'real time'. The model can predict the dispersion and concentration of droplets carrying viable viral copies in the air, the contamination of surfaces, and the related spatially-resolved infection risk. It may therefore provide useful information for the management of indoor environments in terms of, e.g., maximum occupancy, air changes per hour and cleaning of surfaces. This work describes the fundamentals of the model and its main characteristics. The model was developed using open-source software and is conceived to be simple, user-friendly and highly automated to enable any potential user to perform estimations of the local infection risk.

Abstract:Airborne transmission is a pathway of contagion that is still not sufficiently investigated despite the evidence in the scientific literature of the role it can play in the context of an epidemic. While the medical research area dedicates efforts to find cures and remedies to counteract the effects of a virus, the engineering area is involved in providing risk assessments in indoor environments by simulating the airborne transmission of the virus during an epidemic. To this end, virus air emission data are needed. Unfortunately, this information is usually available only after the outbreak, based on specific reverse engineering cases. In this work, a novel approach to estimate the viral load emitted by a contagious subject on the basis of the viral load in the mouth, the type of respiratory activity (e.g. breathing, speaking, whispering), respiratory physiological parameters (e.g. inhalation rate), and activity level (e.g. resting, standing, light exercise) is proposed.The results showed that high quanta emission rates (>100 quanta h-1) can be reached by an asymptomatic infectious SARS-CoV-2 subject performing vocalization during light activities (i.e. walking slowly) whereas a symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 subject in resting conditions mostly has a low quanta emission rate (<1 quantum h-1).The findings in terms of quanta emission rates were then adopted in infection risk models to demonstrate its application by evaluating the number of people infected by an asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 subject in Italian indoor microenvironments before and after the introduction of virus containment measures. The results obtained from the simulations clearly highlight that a key role is played by proper ventilation in containment of the virus in indoor environments.

Abstract:The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has changed our lives and still poses a challenge to science. Numerous studies have contributed to a better understanding of the pandemic. In particular, inhalation of aerosolised pathogens has been identified as essential for transmission. This information is crucial to slow the spread, but the individual likelihood of becoming infected in everyday situations remains uncertain. Mathematical models help estimate such risks. In this study, we propose how to model airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 at a local scale. In this regard, we combine microscopic crowd simulation with a new model for disease transmission. Inspired by compartmental models, we describe agents' health status as susceptible, exposed, infectious or recovered. Infectious agents exhale pathogens bound to persistent aerosols, whereas susceptible agents absorb pathogens when moving through an aerosol cloud left by the infectious agent. The transmission depends on the pathogen load of the aerosol cloud, which changes over time. We propose a 'high risk' benchmark scenario to distinguish critical from non-critical situations. Simulating indoor situations show that the new model is suitable to evaluate the risk of exposure qualitatively and, thus, enables scientists or even decision-makers to better assess the spread of COVID-19 and similar diseases.

Abstract:Infectious aerosols are expired in various sizes, and the number of contained virions is expected to significantly vary among expired aerosols. To evaluate the effect of the number of contained virions on infection risk, multi-virion aerosols in expired air should be first quantified. In this study, we categorised expired aerosols into traditional aerosol size bins and aerosols containing different number of virions. We quantified the number of virions in aerosols of each size bin and estimated the size distribution of aerosols which contain a certain number of virions when the viral load is known. This analysis helped us to determine the relationship between multi-size aerosols and multi-virion aerosols. Our findings indicate that for long-range airborne transmission, the airborne transmission droplets derived from four COVID-19 outbreak venues contain at most one infectious virion, supporting the one-virion assumption for the considered viral load ranges. However, for short-range airborne transmission, the impact of multi-virion aerosols on infection risk must be considered. Our quantification of multi-virion aerosols for the first time lays the groundwork for incorporating the multi-virion assumption into infection risk assessments.

Abstract:The lack of quantitative risk assessment of airborne transmission of COVID-19 under practical settings leads to large uncertainties and inconsistencies in our preventive measures. Combining in situ measurements and numerical simulations, we quantify the exhaled particles from normal respiratory behaviors and their transport under elevator, small classroom and supermarket settings to evaluate the risk of inhaling potentially virus-containing particles. Our results show that the design of ventilation is critical for reducing the risk of particle encounters. Inappropriate design can significantly limit the efficiency of particle removal, create local hot spots with orders of magnitude higher risks, and enhance particle deposition causing surface contamination. Additionally, our measurements reveal the presence of substantial fraction of crystalline particles from normal breathing and its strong correlation with breathing depth.

Abstract:How may exposure risks to SARS-CoV-2 be assessed quantitatively? The material metabolism approach of Industrial Ecology can be applied to the mass flows of these virions by their numbers, as a key step in the analysis of the current pandemic. Several transmission routes of SARS-2 from emission by a person to exposure of another person have been modelled and quantified. Start is a COVID-19 illness progression model specifying rising emissions by an infected person: the human virion factory. The first route covers closed spaces, with an emission, concentration, and decay model quantifying exposure. A next set of routes covers person-to-person contacts mostly in open spaces, modelling the spatial distribution of exhales towards inhalation. These models also cover incidental exposures, like coughs and sneezes, and exposure through objects. Routes through animal contacts, excrements, and food, have not been quantified. Potential exposures differ by six orders of magnitude. Closed rooms, even with reasonably (VR 2) to good (VR 5) ventilation, constitute the major exposure risks. Close person-to-person contacts of longer duration create two orders of magnitude lower exposure risks. Open spaces may create risks an order of magnitude lower again. Burst of larger droplets may cause a common cold but not viral pneumonia as the virions in such droplets cannot reach the alveoli. Fomites have not shown viable viruses in hospitals, let alone infections. Infection by animals might be possible, as by cats and ferrets kept as pets. These results indicate priority domains for individual and collective measures. The wide divergence in outcomes indicates robustness to most modelling and data improvements, hardly leading to major changes in relative exposure potentials. However, models and data can substantially be improved.

Abstract:A simplistic reaction-diffusion model is undertaken in the present work to mathematically explore the spatio-temporal development of concentration of indoor aerosols containing infectious COVID-19 respiratory virus nuclei. Extracting exact solutions of concentration field under the influence of several physical parameters is preferred rather than adopting a more realistic complex model requiring time-consuming numerical simulations. Even though the proposed model is not sophisticated, the analytical solutions can provide quick prediction of the probability of contracting the virus in a ventilated closed room. Moreover, from the obtained elementary solutions of the viral concentration field, it is easy to analyze its spatio-temporal evolution and final equilibrium state. Formulae enable us to estimate the time to get infected and the risk of getting infected within an elapsed time under various physical operative situations involving a uniform infectious particle mixture ejection into the medium, wearing a face mask with a well-defined efficiency parameter and taking into account a localized source of infection. One of the essential conclusion from the current research is that less aerosols carrying COVID-19 particles are as a result of good indoor ventilation conditions, of removing the medium air through windows (or other exits) and of wearing masks of high efficiency. Moreover, the risk and probability of being caught by the indoor COVID-19 disease increases in time, particularly in the downstream of a localized infectious person. The results can be beneficial to understand and take necessary safety considerations against the infection risk in closed public or governmental environments.
Risk assessment for long and short range airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2, indoors and outdoors

Abstract:Preventive measures to reduce infection are needed to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for a possible endemic phase. Current prophylactic vaccines are highly effective to prevent disease but lose their ability to reduce viral transmission as viral evolution leads to increasing immune escape. Long term proactive public health policies must therefore complement vaccination with available nonpharmaceutical interventions (NPI) aiming to reduce the viral transmission risk in public spaces. Here, we revisit the quantitative assessment of airborne transmission risk, considering asymptotic limits that considerably simplify its expression. We show that the aerosol transmission risk is the product of three factors: a biological factor that depends on the viral strain, a hydrodynamical factor defined as the ratio of concentration in viral particles between inhaled and exhaled air, and a face mask filtering factor. The short range contribution to the risk, both present indoors and outdoors, is related to the turbulent dispersion of exhaled aerosols by air drafts and by convection (indoor), or by the wind (outdoors). We show experimentally that airborne droplets and CO$_2$ molecules present the same dispersion. As a consequence, the dilution factor, and therefore the risk, can be measured quantitatively using the CO$_2$ concentration, regardless of the room volume, the flow rate of fresh air and the occupancy. We show that the dispersion cone leads to a concentration in viral particles, and therefore a short range transmission risk, inversely proportional to the squared distance to an infected person and to the flow velocity. The aerosolization criterion derived as an intermediate result, which compares the Stokes relaxation time to the Lagrangian time scale, may find application for a broad class of aerosol-borne pathogens and pollutants.

Predicting the spatio-temporal infection risk in indoor spaces using an efficient airborne transmission model

Abstract:We develop a spatially dependent generalization to the Wells–Riley model, which determines the infection risk due to airborne transmission of viruses. We assume that the infectious aerosol concentration is governed by an advection–diffusion–reaction equation with the aerosols advected by airflow, diffused due to turbulence, emitted by infected people, and removed due to ventilation, inactivation of the virus and gravitational settling. We consider one asymptomatic or presymptomatic infectious person breathing or talking, with or without a mask, and model a quasi-three-dimensional set-up that incorporates a recirculating air-conditioning flow. We derive a semi-analytic solution that enables fast simulations and compare our predictions to three real-life case studies—a courtroom, a restaurant, and a hospital ward—demonstrating good agreement. We then generate predictions for the concentration and the infection risk in a classroom, for four different ventilation settings. We quantify the significant reduction in the concentration and the infection risk as ventilation improves, and derive appropriate power laws. The model can be easily updated for different parameter values and can be used to make predictions on the expected time taken to become infected, for any location, emission rate, and ventilation level. The results have direct applicability in mitigating the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
COVID-19 Contagion Risk Estimation Model for Indoor Environments

Abstract:COVID-19 is an infectious disease mainly transmitted through aerosol particles. Physical distancing can significantly reduce airborne transmission at a short range, but it is not a sufficient measure to avoid contagion. In recent months, health authorities have identified indoor spaces as possible sources of infection, mainly due to poor ventilation, making it necessary to take measures to improve indoor air quality. In this work, an accurate model for COVID-19 contagion risk estimation based on the Wells-Riley probabilistic approach for indoor environments is proposed and implemented as an Android mobile App. The implemented algorithm takes into account all relevant parameters, such as environmental conditions, age, kind of activities, and ventilation conditions, influencing the risk of contagion to provide the real-time probability of contagion with respect to the permanence time, the maximum allowed number of people for the specified area, the expected number of COVID-19 cases, and the required number of Air Changes per Hour. Alerts are provided to the user in the case of a high probability of contagion and CO2 concentration. Additionally, the app exploits a Bluetooth signal to estimate the distance to other devices, allowing the regulation of social distance between people. The results from the application of the model are provided and discussed for different scenarios, such as offices, restaurants, classrooms, and libraries, thus proving the effectiveness of the proposed tool, helping to reduce the spread of the virus still affecting the world population.
Non-uniform Risk Assessment Methods for Personalized Ventilation on Prevention and Control of COVID-19

Abstract:Ventilation is an important measure to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 in indoor environment. The protection effect of personalized ventilation in disease control has been preliminarily verified in previous studies. It is considered as one of the promising measures to control airborne transmission indoors due to its high ventilation efficiency with direct delivery of fresh and clean air to the occupant's breathing zone. Especially for vehicles like aircrafts and coaches, in which the personalized ventilation has been used for years, its applications in COVID-19 epidemic control should be further explored. However, most of the present airborne infection risk prediction models are based on the assumption that the exhaled pathogens are evenly distributed in the room. The non-uniform distribution of pathogens in indoor environment cannot be accurately predicted with these models when applying localized ventilation or considering the short-ranged transmission of airborne pathogens. In this study, five different non-uniform risk assessment models were verified by the tracer particle experiments with thermal manikins. The assessment methods included exposure risk index (epsilon(bz)), personal exposure effectiveness (PEE), intake fraction (IF), dose-response model (P(t)) and infection risk reduction ratio (eta). Two breathing thermal manikins were used to simulate two seated passengers in public transportation placed side by side. The nebulized aerosols with similar size distribution to human breathing were released from the source manikin's mouth. The concentration of the received particles at the receptor's breathing zone was sampled with an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS). The receptor's exposure level of droplets released by the exhalation of the infector was predicted accordingly considering the usage patterns of the personalized ventilation. The applicability of each model for predicting the risk of airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 was discussed. The results show that the five assessment methods are all based on the measurement results of the droplet concentration in the breathing zone of the exposed occupant. These models can predict the intervention effect of personalized ventilation on the airborne exposure or infection risk, and the trends of the predicted results are basically consistent. The relative exposure level can be predicted by exposure risk index epsilon(bz), PEE and IF, which can be used to simply assess the exposure risk of SARS-CoV-2. The dose-response model can directly assess the infection risk of specific airborne disease such as COVID-19, but only when the viability and infectivity of the virus are accurately determined. And infection risk index. can evaluate the infection risk reduction ratio due to the use of personalized ventilation. These assessment methods can all reflect the problems of risk increase caused by lateral spread and accelerated diffusion of the droplet-laden air due to the application of personalized ventilation to the infector. The protective effect for the exposed occupant can also be evaluated by these models when PV is used for the receptor. The exposure risk of the receptor can be lowered by using the personalized ventilation and the protection effect is increased by using higher volume of clean air. This study can provide support and reference for the evaluation and development of novel ventilation methods for airborne disease control in indoor environment and provide basis for assessment of the transmission risk of COVID-19 under non-uniform conditions.

Abstract:Since the outbreak of COVID‐19 in December 2019, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV‐2) has spread worldwide. This study summarized the transmission mechanisms of COVID‐19 and their main influencing factors, such as airflow patterns, air temperature, relative humidity, and social distancing. The transmission characteristics in existing cases are providing more and more evidence that SARS CoV‐2 can be transmitted through the air. This investigation reviewed probabilistic and deterministic research methods, such as the Wells–Riley equation, the dose‐response model, the Monte‐Carlo model, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the Eulerian method, CFD with the Lagrangian method, and the experimental approach, that have been used for studying the airborne transmission mechanism. The Wells–Riley equation and dose‐response model are typically used for the assessment of the average infection risk. Only in combination with the Eulerian method or the Lagrangian method can these two methods obtain the spatial distribution of airborne particles' concentration and infection risk. In contrast with the Eulerian and Lagrangian methods, the Monte‐Carlo model is suitable for studying the infection risk when the behavior of individuals is highly random. Although researchers tend to use numerical methods to study the airborne transmission mechanism of COVID‐19, an experimental approach could often provide stronger evidence to prove the possibility of airborne transmission than a simple numerical model. All in all, the reviewed methods are helpful in the study of the airborne transmission mechanism of COVID‐19 and epidemic prevention and control.

Analyzing the dominant SARS-CoV-2 transmission routes towards an ab initio SEIR model

Abstract:Identifying the relative importance of the different transmission routes of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is an urgent research priority. To that end, the different transmission routes, and their role in determining the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic are analyzed in this work. Probability of infection caused by inhaling virus-laden droplets (initial, ejection diameters between $0.5-750\mu m$) and the corresponding desiccated nuclei that mostly encapsulate the virions post droplet evaporation, are individually calculated. At typical, air-conditioned yet quiescent indoor space, for average viral loading, cough droplets of initial diameter between $10-50 \mu m$ have the highest infection probability. However, by the time they are inhaled, the diameters reduce to about $1/6^{th}$ of their initial diameters. While the initially near unity infection probability due to droplets rapidly decays within the first $25s$, the small yet persistent infection probability of desiccated nuclei decays appreciably only by $\mathcal{O} (1000s)$, assuming the virus sustains equally well within the dried droplet nuclei as in the droplets. Combined with molecular collision theory adapted to calculate frequency of contact between the susceptible population and the droplet/nuclei cloud, infection rate constants are derived ab-initio, leading to a SEIR model applicable for any respiratory event - vector combination. Viral load, minimum infectious dose, sensitivity of the virus half-life to the phase of its vector and dilution of the respiratory jet/puff by the entraining air are shown to mechanistically determine specific physical modes of transmission and variation in the basic reproduction number $\mathcal{R}_0$, from first principle calculations.
Simulating near-field enhancement in transmission of airborne viruses with a quadrature-based model

Abstract:Airborne viruses, such as influenza, tuberculosis, and SARS-CoV-2, are transmitted through virus-laden particles expelled when an infectious person sneezes, coughs, talks, or breathes. These virus-laden particles are more highly concentrated in the expiratory jet of an infectious person than in a well-mixed room, but this near-field enhancement in virion exposure has not been well quantified. Transmission of airborne viruses depends on factors that are inherently variable and, in many cases, poorly constrained, and quantifying this uncertainty requires large ensembles of model simulations that span the variability in input parameters. However, models that are well-suited to simulate the near-field evolution of respiratory particles are also computationally expensive, which limits the exploration of parametric uncertainty. In order to perform many simulations that span the wide variability in factors governing transmission, we developed the Quadrature-based model of Respiratory Aerosol and Droplets (QuaRAD). QuaRAD is an efficient framework for simulating the evolution of virus-laden particles after they are expelled from an infectious person, their deposition to the nasal cavity of a susceptible person, and the subsequent risk of initial infection. We simulated 10,000 scenarios to quantify the risk of initial infection by a particular virus, SARS-CoV-2. The predicted risk of infection was highly variable among scenarios and, in each scenario, was strongly enhanced near the infectious individual. In more than 50% of scenarios, the physical distancing needed to avoid near-field enhancements in airborne transmission was beyond the recommended safe distance of two meters (six feet) if the infectious person is not wearing a mask, though this distance defining the near-field extent was also highly variable among scenarios.

Abstract:The risk of long range, herein `airborne', infection needs to be better understood and is especially urgent during the current COVID-19 pandemic. We present a method to determine the relative risk of airborne transmission that can be readily deployed with either modelled or monitored CO$_2$ data and occupancy levels within an indoor space. For spaces regularly, or consistently, occupied by the same group of people, e.g. an open-plan office or a school classroom, we establish protocols to assess the absolute risk of airborne infection of this regular attendance at work or school. We present a methodology to easily calculate the expected number of secondary infections arising from a regular attendee becoming infectious and remaining pre/asymptomatic within these spaces. We demonstrate our model by calculating risks for both a modelled open-plan office and by using monitored data recorded within a small naturally ventilated office. In addition, by inferring ventilation rates from monitored CO$_2$ we show that estimates of airborne infection can be accurately reconstructed; thereby offering scope for more informed retrospective modelling should outbreaks occur in spaces where CO$_2$ is monitored. Our modelling suggests that regular attendance at an office for work is unlikely to significantly contribute to the pandemic but only if relatively quiet desk-based work is carried out in the presence of adequate ventilation (i.e. at least 10\,l/s/p following UK guidance), appropriate hygiene controls, distancing measures, and that all commuting presents minimal infection risk. Crucially, modelling even moderate changes to the conditions within the office, or basing estimates for the infectivity of the SARS-CoV-2 variant B1.1.7 current data, typically results in the prediction that for a single infector within the office the airborne route alone gives rises to more than one secondary infection.

Abstract:The Covid-19 pandemic has taken millions of lives, demonstrating the tragedy and disruption of respiratory diseases, and how difficult they can be to manage. However, there is still significant debate in the scientific community as to which transmission pathways are most significant and how settings and behaviour affect risk of infection, which all have implications for which mitigation strategies are most effective. This study presents a general model to estimate the rate of viral transfer between individuals, objects, and the air. The risk of infection to individuals in a setting is then computed considering the behaviour and interactions of individuals between themselves and the environment in the setting, survival times of the virus on different surface types and in the air, and mitigating interventions (ventilation, hand disinfection, surface cleaning, etc.). The model includes discrete events such as touch events, individuals entering/leaving the setting, and cleaning events. We demonstrate the model capabilities on three case studies to quantify and understand the relative risk associated with the different transmission pathways and the effectiveness of mitigation strategies in different settings. The results show the importance of considering all transmission pathways and their interactions, with each scenario displaying different dominant pathways depending on the setting and behaviours of individuals therein. The flexible model, which is freely available, can be used to quickly simulate the spread of any respiratory virus via the modelled transmission pathways and the efficacy of potential mitigation strategies in any enclosed setting by making reasonable assumptions regarding the behaviour of its occupants. It is hoped that the model can be used to inform sensible decision-making regarding viral infection mitigations that are targeted to specific settings and pathogens.

Abstract:A mathematical model for estimating the risk of airborne transmission of a respiratory infection such as COVID-19 is presented. The model employs basic concepts from fluid dynamics and incorporates the known scope of factors involved in the airborne transmission of such diseases. Simplicity in the mathematical form of the model is by design so that it can serve not only as a common basis for scientific inquiry across disciplinary boundaries but it can also be understandable by a broad audience outside science and academia. The caveats and limitations of the model are discussed in detail. The model is used to assess the protection from transmission afforded by face coverings made from a variety of fabrics. The reduction in the transmission risk associated with increased physical distance between the host and susceptible is also quantified by coupling the model with available and new large eddy simulation data on scalar dispersion in canonical flows. Finally, the effect of the level of physical activity (or exercise intensity) of the host and the susceptible in enhancing the transmission risk is also assessed.
