Abstract:Due to the stringent hardware requirements and high cost, quantum computing as a service (QCaaS) is currently the main way to output quantum computing capabilities. However, the current QCaaS has significant shortcomings in privacy protection. The existing researches mainly focus on dataset privacy in some specific quantum machine learning algorithms, and there is no general and comprehensive research on privacy protection for dataset, parameter sets and algorithm models. To solve this problem, this paper defines the concept of generalized quantum homomorphic encryption and pioneers a novel method termed quantum circuit equivalence homomorphic encryption (QCEHE), aiming at protecting the privacy of the complete quantum circuits—encompassing data, parameters, and model. Based on QCEHE, a privacy protection scheme and its approximate implementation called quantum circuit equivalent substitution algorithm are proposed for any quantum algorithm, which can encrypt the complete quantum circuit on a classical computer, ensuring that the encrypted quantum circuit is physically equivalent to the original one, and does not reveal data holders' privacy (data, parameters and model). By theoretical derivation, we prove that the proposed solution can effectively execute any quantum algorithm while protecting privacy. By applying the proposed solution to the privacy protection of the Harrow–Hassidim–Lloyd algorithm and the variational quantum classifier algorithm, the results showed that the accuracy rate before and after encryption are almost the same, which means that the proposed solution can effectively protect the privacy of data holders without impacting the usability and accuracy.

Abstract:With the constantly advancing capabilities of quantum computers, conventional cryptographic systems relying on complex math problems may encounter unforeseen vulnerabilities. Unlike regular computers, which are often deemed cost-ineffective in cryptographic attacks, quantum computers have a significant advantage in calculation speed. This distinction potentially makes currently used algorithms less secure or even completely vulnerable, compelling the exploration of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) as the most reasonable solution to quantum threats. This review aims to provide current information on applications, benefits, and challenges associated with the PQC. The review employs a systematic scoping review with the scope restricted to the years 2022 and 2023; only articles that were published in scientific journals were used in this paper. The review examined the articles on the applications of quantum computing in various spheres. However, the scope of this paper was restricted to the domain of the PQC because most of the analyzed articles featured this field. Subsequently, the paper is analyzing various PQC algorithms, including lattice-based, hash-based, code-based, multivariate polynomial, and isogeny-based cryptography. Each algorithm is being judged based on its potential applications, robustness, and challenges. All the analyzed algorithms are promising for the post-quantum era in such applications as digital signatures, communication channels, and IoT. Moreover, some of the algorithms are already implemented in the spheres of banking transactions, communication, and intellectual property. Meanwhile, despite their potential, these algorithms face serious challenges since they lack standardization, require vast amounts of storage and computation power, and might have unknown vulnerabilities that can be discovered only with years of cryptanalysis.

Abstract:We review the current status of efforts to develop and deploy post-quantum cryptography on the Internet. Then we suggest specific ways in which quantum technologies might be used to enhance cybersecurity in the near future and beyond. We focus on two goals: protecting the secret keys that are used in classical cryptography, and ensuring the trustworthiness of quantum computations. These goals may soon be within reach, thanks to recent progress in both theory and experiment. This progress includes interactive protocols for testing quantumness as well as for performing uncloneable cryptographic computations; and experimental demonstrations of device-independent random number generators, device-independent quantum key distribution, quantum memories, and analog quantum simulators.

Abstract:Information security is a fundamental and urgent issue in the digital transformation era. Cryptographic techniques and digital signatures have been applied to protect and authenticate relevant information. However, with the advent of quantum computers and quantum algorithms, classical cryptographic techniques have been in danger of collapsing because quantum computers can solve complex problems in polynomial time. Stemming from that risk, researchers worldwide have stepped up research on post-quantum algorithms to resist attack by quantum computers. In this review paper, we survey studies in recent years on post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and provide statistics on the number and content of publications, including a literature overview, detailed explanations of the most common methods so far, current implementation status, implementation comparisons, and discussion on future work. These studies focused on essential public cryptography techniques and digital signature schemes, and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) launched a competition to select the best candidate for the expected standard. Recent studies have practically implemented the public key encryption/key encapsulation mechanism (PKE/KEM) and digital signature schemes on different hardware platforms and applied various optimization measures based on other criteria. Along with the increasing number of scientific publications, the recent trend of PQC research is increasingly evident and is the general trend in the cryptography industry. The movement opens up a promising avenue for researchers in public key cryptography and digital signatures, especially on algorithms selected by NIST.

Abstract:Quantum 7, 976 (2023). https://doi.org/10.22331/q-2023-04-13-976 Quantum homomorphic encryption, which allows computation by a server directly on encrypted data, is a fundamental primitive out of which more complex quantum cryptography protocols can be built. For such constructions to be possible, quantum homomorphic encryption must satisfy two privacy properties: data privacy which ensures that the input data is private from the server, and circuit privacy which ensures that the ciphertext after the computation does not reveal any additional information about the circuit used to perform it, beyond the output of the computation itself. While circuit privacy is well-studied in classical cryptography and many homomorphic encryption schemes can be equipped with it, its quantum analogue has received little attention. Here we establish a definition of circuit privacy for quantum homomorphic encryption with information-theoretic security. Furthermore, we reduce quantum oblivious transfer to quantum homomorphic encryption. By using this reduction, our work unravels fundamental trade-offs between circuit privacy, data privacy and correctness for a broad family of quantum homomorphic encryption protocols, including schemes that allow only the computation of Clifford circuits.

Abstract:Cryptography is very essential in our daily life, not only for confidentiality of information, but also for information integrity verification, non-repudiation, authentication, and other aspects. In modern society, cryptography is widely used; everything from personal life to national security is inseparable from it. With the emergence of quantum computing, traditional encryption methods are at risk of being cracked. People are beginning to explore methods for defending against quantum computer attacks. Among the methods currently developed, quantum key distribution is a technology that uses the principles of quantum mechanics to distribute keys. Post-quantum encryption algorithms are encryption methods that rely on mathematical challenges that quantum computers cannot solve quickly to ensure security. In this study, an integrated review of post-quantum encryption algorithms is conducted from the perspective of traditional cryptography. First, the concept and development background of post-quantum encryption are introduced. Then, the post-quantum encryption algorithm Kyber is studied. Finally, the achievements, difficulties and outstanding problems in this emerging field are summarized, and some predictions for the future are made.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, the family of public-key cryptosystems, a fundamental breakthrough in modern cryptography in the late 1970s, has become an increasingly integral part of our communication networks. The Internet, as well as other communication systems, relies principally on the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, RSA encryption, and digital signatures using DSA, ECDSA, or related algorithms. The security of these cryptosystems depends on the difficulty of certain number-theoretic problems, such as integer factorization or the discrete log problem. In 1994 Peter Shor showed that quantum computers can solve each of these problems in polynomial time, thus rendering the security of all cryptosystems based on such assumptions impotent. A large international community has emerged to address this issue in the hope that our public-key infrastructure may remain intact by utilizing new quantum-resistant primitives. In the academic world, this new science bears the moniker Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

Abstract:Post-quantum cryptography is inevitable. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) starts standardizing quantum-resistant public-key cryptography (aka post-quantum cryptography). The reason is that investment in quantum computing is blooming which poses significant threats to our currently deployed cryptographic algorithms. As a security engineer, to prepare for the apocalypse in advance, I've been watching the development of quantum computers and post-quantum cryptography closely. Never mind, I simply made up an excuse to study these fascinating scientific fields. However, they are extremely hard to understand, at least to an amateur like me. Abstract:Over the past decades, quantum technology has seen consistent progress, with notable recent developments in the field of quantum computers. Traditionally, this trend has been primarily seen as a serious risk for cryptography; however, a positive aspect of quantum technology should also be stressed. In this regard, viewing this technology as a resource for honest parties rather than adversaries, it may enhance not only the security, but also the performance of specific cryptographic schemes. While considerable effort has been devoted to the design of quantum-resistant and quantum-enhanced schemes, little effort has been made to understanding their <i>physical</i> security. Physical security deals with the design and implementation of security measures fulfilling the practical requirements of cryptographic primitives, which are equally essential for classic and quantum ones. This survey aims to draw greater attention to the importance of physical security, with a focus on secure key generation and storage as well as secure execution. More specifically, the possibility of performing side-channel analysis in the quantum world is discussed and compared to attacks launched in the classic world. Besides, proposals for quantum random number generation and quantum physically unclonable functions are compared to their classic counterparts and further analyzed to give a better understanding of their features, advantages, and shortcomings. Finally, seen from these three perspectives, this survey provides an outlook for future research in this direction.

Homomorphic Encryption Based on Post-Quantum Cryptography

Abstract:With the development of Shor's algorithm, some nondeterministic polynomial (NP) time problems (e.g. prime factorization problems and discrete logarithm problems) may be solved in polynomial time. In recent years, although some homomorphic encryption algorithms have been proposed based on prime factorization problems, the algorithms may be cracked by quantum computing attacks. Therefore, this study proposes a post-quantum cryptography (PQC)-based homomorphic encryption method which includes the homomorphic encryption function based on a code-based cryptography method for avoiding quantum computing attacks. Subsection 3.2 proposes mathematical models to prove the feasibility of the proposed method, and Subsection 3.3 gives calculation examples to present the detailed steps of the proposed method. In experimental environments, the mainstream cryptography methods (i.e. RSA cryptography and elliptic curve cryptography (ECC)) have been compared, and the results show that the encryption time and decryption time of the proposed method are shorter than other cryptography methods. Furthermore, the proposed method is designed based on a non-negative matrix factorization problem (i.e. a NP problem) for resisting quantum computing attacks.

Abstract:Secure multiparty computational geometry is an essential field of secure multiparty computation. It involves solving geometric problems without disclosing any private geometric information from each participating party. Privacy-preserving point-line relation determination, a pivotal branch of secure multiparty computational geometry, holds significant potential for applications in various domains, including business, engineering, and military. In this paper, leveraging the assistance of a third party, we introduce a quantum solution to privacy-preserving point-line relation determination. This approach incorporates quantum key distribution and one-time pad encryption. Under the condition that the third party does not conspire with any participant, our protocol ensures heightened security and enhanced privacy protection compared to classical methods. This superiority is attributed to the underlying principles of quantum mechanics and the utilization of one-time pad encryption. Furthermore, we extend our protocol to involve multiple third parties, employing the technology of quantum secret sharing. In scenarios where these third parties refrain from colluding with any single participant, no information is divulged to the other participant. Consequently, the protocol becomes more rational and secure when multiple third parties are involved.

Abstract:Nowadays, predominant asymmetric cryptographic schemes are considered to be secure because discrete logarithms are believed to be hard to be computed. The algorithm of Shor can effectively compute discrete logarithms, i.e. it can brake such asymmetric schemes. But the algorithm of Shor is a quantum algorithm and at the time this algorithm has been invented, quantum computers that may successfully execute this algorithm seemed to be far out in the future. The latter has changed: quantum computers that are powerful enough are likely to be available in a couple of years. In this article, we first describe the relation between discrete logarithms and two well-known asymmetric security schemes, RSA and Elliptic Curve Cryptography. Next, we present the foundations of lattice-based cryptography which is the bases of schemes that are considered to be safe against attacks by quantum algorithms (as well as by classical algorithms). Then we describe two such quantum-safe algorithms (Kyber and Dilithium) in more detail. Finally, we give a very brief and selective overview of a few actions currently taken by governments and industry as well as standardization in this area. The article especially strives towards being self-contained: the required mathematical foundations to understand post-quantum cryptography are provided and examples are given.

Abstract:The advent of quantum computing poses a profound threat to traditional cryptographic systems, exposing vulnerabilities that compromise the security of digital communication channels reliant on RSA, ECC, and similar classical encryption methods. Quantum algorithms, notably Shor's algorithm, exploit the inherent computational power of quantum computers to efficiently solve mathematical problems underlying these cryptographic schemes. In response, post-quantum cryptography (PQC) emerged as a critical field aimed at developing resilient cryptographic algorithms impervious to quantum attacks. This paper delineates the vulnerabilities of classical cryptographic systems to quantum attacks, elucidates the principles of quantum computing, and introduces various PQC algorithms such as lattice-based cryptography, code-based cryptography, hash-based cryptography, and multivariate polynomial cryptography. Highlighting the importance of PQC in securing digital communication amidst quantum computing advancements, this research underscores its pivotal role in safeguarding data integrity, confidentiality, and authenticity in the face of emerging quantum threats.

Abstract:Encryption schemes often derive their power from the properties of the underlying algebra on the symbols used. Inspired by group theoretic tools, we use the centralizer of a subgroup of operations to present a private-key quantum homomorphic encryption scheme that enables a broad class of quantum computation on encrypted data. The quantum data is encoded on bosons of distinct species in distinct spatial modes, and the quantum computations are manipulations of these bosons in a manner independent of their species. A particular instance of our encoding hides up to a constant fraction of the information encrypted. This fraction can be made arbitrarily close to unity with overhead scaling only polynomially in the message length. This highlights the potential of our protocol to hide a non-trivial amount of information, and is suggestive of a large class of encodings that might yield better security.

Abstract:Quantum technologies hold the promise of not only faster algorithmic processing of data, via quantum computation, but also of more secure communications, in the form of quantum cryptography. In recent years, a number of protocols have emerged which seek to marry these concepts for the purpose of securing computation rather than communication. These protocols address the task of securely delegating quantum computation to an untrusted device while maintaining the privacy, and in some instances the integrity, of the computation. We present a review of the progress to date in this emerging area.

Abstract:More and more quantum algorithms have been designed for solving problems in machine learning, database search and data analytics. An important problem then arises: how privacy can be protected when these algorithms are used on private data? For classical computing, the notion of differential privacy provides a very useful conceptual framework in which a great number of mechanisms that protect privacy by introducing certain noises into algorithms have been successfully developed. This paper defines a notion of differential privacy for quantum information processing. We carefully examine how the mechanisms using three important types of quantum noise, the amplitude/phase damping and depolarizing, can protect differential privacy. A composition theorem is proved that enables us to combine multiple privacy-preserving operations in quantum information processing.
