Abstract:It is commonly assumed that dams retain nutrients and cause eutrophication in reservoirs after impoundment. In this study, we explored denitrification in a riparian zone at the land-water interface in a hydropower reservoir of the upper Mekong River. Results demonstrated that hydropower production intensified water level fluctuations in the reservoir and significantly accelerated riparian denitrification process at the land-water interface; the denitrification rate exhibited a strong positive relationship with the period of water level rising-falling cycle (r(2) = 0.98, P < 0.05). Intensified water level fluctuations created frequently alternate wetting-drying cycles and enhanced hyporheic exchanges in the riparian zone, which accelerated organic carbon mineralization and thereby increased carbon source supply to fuel denitrification. In addition, river impoundment after dam construction appreciably enlarged the hot spots for riparian denitrification. The accelerated denitrification as well as the enlarged hot spots area jointly enhanced nitrogen removal from impounded rivers. These findings could advance fundamental knowledge on the environmental impacts of hydropower development on rivers.
Does a hydropower reservoir cascade really harm downstream nutrient regimes

Abstract:River damming is believed to largely intercept nutrients, particularly retain more phosphorus (P) than nitrogen (N), and thus harm primary productivity, fishery catches, and food security downstream, which seriously constrain global hydropower development and poverty relief in undeveloped regions and can drive geo-political disputes between nations along trans-boundary rivers. In this study, we investigated whether reservoirs can instead improve nutrient regimes downstream. We measured different species of N and P as well as microbial functions in water and sediment of cascade reservoirs in the upper Mekong River over 5 years and modelled the influx and outflux of N and P species in each reservoir. Despite partially retaining total N and total P, reservoirs increased the downstream flux of ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP). The increase in ammonium and SRP between outflux and influx showed positive linear relationships with the hydraulic residence time of the cascade reservoirs; and the ratio of SRP to dissolved inorganic nitrogen increased along the reservoir cascade. The lentic environment of reservoirs stimulated algae-mediated conversion of nitrate into ammonium in surface water; the hypoxic condition and the priming effect of algae-induced organic matter enhanced release of ammonium from sediment; the synergy of microbial phosphorylation, reductive condition and sediment geochemical properties increased release of SRP. This study is the first to provide solid evidence that hydropower reservoirs improve downstream nutrient bioavailability and N-P balance through a process of retention-transformation-transport, which may benefit primary productivity. These findings could advance our understanding of the eco-environmental impacts of river damming.
Circulating immune complexes detected by 125I-Clq deviation test in sera of cancer patients.

Abstract:The presence of circulating immune complexes in freshly drawn sera of patients with various forms of malignancies was detected by the 125I-Clq deviation test of Sobel et al. More than 50% of the 459 cancer sera showed a high inhibition of 125I-Clq uptake by sensitized sheep erythrocytes when compared with sera of 50 healthy laboratory personnel. The levels were compared with levels of total hemolytic complement and immunochemical determinations of Cl1 and C3. A correlation between high levels of circulating immune complexes and low levels of Clq was suggested. These immune complexes were separated by sucrose density gradient ultracentrifugation at low pH and were found to be heavier than 19S. Fluctuation of levels of immune complexes was evident when serial samples from the same patient were tested. Decrease of levels of immune complexes and a concomitant increase of Clq were detected after Calmette-Gueérin bacillus and autologous tumor cell treatment in some melanoma patients.
Anthropogenic regulation governs nutrient cycling and biological succession in hydropower reservoirs

Abstract:Hydropower plays an important role in the supply of renewable energy, but it also exerts a great influence on the river continuum. Understanding nutrient cycling and microbial community succession in hydropower reservoirs is key to weighing hydroelectric pros and cons. However, the underlying control mechanisms are still not well known, especially with respect to the impacts of hydrological conditions. Based on a comprehensive survey of hydropower reservoirs along the Wujiang River in SW China and an integration of published data, we found that reservoir physicochemical and biological stratifications and planktonic microbial community assembly were synergistically evolving, and reservoir hydraulic load (i.e., mean water depth per unit retention time) was a key factor controlling the strength of stratifications, CO2 and N2O fluxes, nutrient retention efficiency, and bacterioplankton diversity. Hydraulic loads are artificially designed for hydropower reservoirs, and nutrient cycling and biological succession in reservoirs are thus governed by anthropogenic regulation. This study provides a theoretical basis to mitigate the environmental impacts of hydropower dams by regulating reservoir hydraulic load.

Abstract:The increased use of hydropower is currently driving the greatest surge in global dam construction since the mid-20th century, meaning that most major rivers on Earth are now dammed. Dams impede the flow of essential nutrients, including carbon, phosphorus, nitrogen and silicon, along river networks, leading to enhanced nutrient transformation and elimination. Increased nutrient retention via sedimentation or gaseous elimination in dammed reservoirs influences downstream terrestrial and coastal environments. Reservoirs can also become hotspots for greenhouse gas emission, potentially impacting how 'green' hydropower is compared with fossil-fuel burning. In this Review, we discuss how damming changes nutrient biogeochemistry along river networks, as well as its broader environmental consequences. The influences of construction and management practices on nutrient elimination, the emission of greenhouse gases and potential remobilization of legacy nutrients are also examined. We further consider how regulating hydraulic residence time and environmental flows (or e-flows) can be used in planning and operation from dam conception to deconstruction.
The transborder flux of phosphorus in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin: Magnitude, patterns and impacts from the cascade hydropower dams in China

Abstract:<p>Nutrients are critical to the development of plant and animal life in the river ecological system. In recent years, more attentions have arisen on the impact of building hydropower dams to transborder nutrient flux in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin (LMRB). In this paper, phosphorus was taken as an example, which is considered as one of the most significant factors to limit biological activities in the river. The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used to access the multisource loading pattern of Total Phosphorus (TP) under no-dam scenario, and various types of dam construction scenarios analyses were performed to investigate potential changes in the transborder TP flux from Lancang River Basin (LRB, Chinese part of LMRB) to lower LMRB (other parts of LMRB). The results showed that the Total Phosphorus load in the LRB is about 27,079 tons/year, of which 85% TP is collected from July to October. The annual TP export at the outlet of the LRB is 14,112 tons/year under no-dam scenario, which accounts for about 4.2% of the total TP loads in the lower LMRB. With seven to twenty-one dams included in experiments, TP flux at the outlet of the LRB decreased 50–59%, while the delivered ratio for the lower LMRB decreased 2.1–2.5%. As a summary, building dams has a significant impact on the TP transport pattern in the Chinese part of LMRB, but very limited effect in lower LMRB according to the modeling results, especially for the Mekong delta. Moreover, the existing dams (seven dams) seem to intercept much more phosphorus than those dams that are under construction.</p>

Abstract:Environmental changes and their transboundary influences on the Mekong watercourse system have been an international research focus in recent years, but the opinions and results related to the impacts of upper Mekong River dams are quite different. In this paper, based on the records of water levels from 1960 to 2003 at three mainstream sites in the upper Mekong River, a quantitative examination has been undertaken into characteristics of the mainstream water-level process at multiple timescales and its response to cascade development. The major results are: i) Annual mean, wet period mean, and the mean water levels during the period between March and April (PBMA period) exhibit a significant increasing trend at Jiuzhou and Yunjinghong sites, which are influenced by large-scale factors such as climate change and solar activity. ii) The interdecadal and interannual variations of annual mean, annual maximum, and wet period mean water levels at three sites show similar features during the dam construction period. iii) The interdecadal variations of PBMA period water level show a gradual increase at Gajiu and Yunjinghong sites but a falling trend at Jiuzhou; these trends confirm that there is some regulation on the flow in the dry season caused by the two existing dams. iv) The downstream effects of the present dams on water levels are very limited at the annual mean and wet season mean levels, not apparent at the monthly and yearly timescales, and relatively significant at daily and hourly timescales.

Abstract:As one of the most important international rivers in Asia, the Mekong River is famous for its abundant water and hydropower resources, fascinating biodiversity, and geopolitical importance. However, the rapid hydropower development in the Mekong River Basin has induced ecological risks and triggered water conflicts among six riparian nations. Balancing the competing interests of water, energy and ecosystems in the Mekong River Basin is a great challenge for riparian nations and is of global concern. This study quantitatively investigates what role the operation of the cascade reservoirs in China may play in mitigating existing conflicts and achieving cobenefits in the entire Mekong River Basin. An integrated modeling approach is adopted, and simulation-optimization analyses are performed to explore the tradeoff and/or synergy effects among the competing interests under varying reservoir operation strategies. The study reveals the disparate interactions among water, energy and ecosystem sectors and identifies the transboundary cobenefits of hydropower production and water supply. The major study findings are as follows. First, hydropower development in the upper Mekong River (also known as the Lancang River) can be beneficial for downstream agricultural water supply in certain circumstances if the cascade reservoirs in China are operated wisely. Second, the natural flow index adequately reflects ecological concerns in general, but additional objectives need to be included in the optimization if specific interests (e.g., phosphorous export from the Lancang River) are prioritized. Third, the tradeoffs between the agricultural water supply and ecosystem conservation, the two critical concerns of downstream countries, are intrinsic in the lower Mekong River Basin and are not induced by hydropower production in China. Fourth, the agricultural water supply in the downstream countries calls for a larger shift in the flow regime than hydropower production in China. Overall, the results of this study provide new insights into holistic management and effective transboundary cooperation in the Mekong River Basin, as well as in other international river basins with similar water-energy-ecosystem nexuses. Abstract:The specific Euler number is an important topological characteristic in many applications. It is considered here for the case of random networks, which may appear in microscopy either as primary objects of investigation or as secondary objects describing in an approximate way other structures such as, for example, porous media. For random networks there is a simple and natural estimator of the specific Euler number. For its estimation variance, a simple Poisson approximation is given. It is based on the general exact formula for the estimation variance. In two examples of quite different nature and topology application of the formulas is demonstrated.
Larger phosphorus flux triggered by smaller tributary watersheds in a river reservoir system after dam construction

Abstract:Water level fluctuation and modification in human activities induced by dam construction have significantly affected the production and input of nutrients in the tributary watersheds. In this study, numerical simulation and time series analysis methods are used to explore the input of phosphorus (P) in different types of tributary watersheds around the reservoirs in river reservoir systems and the impact of dam construction on reservoir water quality. Watersheds within a reservoir were divided into larger and smaller tributary watersheds according to whether their area was greater than or less than 1000 km2. The results showed that smaller tributary watersheds, which account for 29% of the area of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR), transported approximately 36%~45% of P and 43.7%~47.8% of sediment deposited into the mainstream from 2003 to 2017. P from the smaller tributary watersheds of the reservoir had a stronger influence on the aquatic environment of the river-reservoir system than that from the larger tributary watersheds. In addition, the annual mean contributions of the P inputs from the “three rivers” (the Yangtze River, the Jialingjiang River and the Wujiang River) and tributary watersheds within the reservoir were 68.76% and 31.18% from 2003 to 2017, respectively. The dam altered the composition of the form of P in the river-reservoir system, and the waterbody close to the dam was identified as the main area containing dissolved P (DP) enrichment. Accordingly, the risk of eutrophication remains high in head area of the dam due to the relatively high and stable P concentration. This study provides critical information for the management of nutrients in a river-reservoir system and the prevention of eutrophication of water bodies.

Abstract:Rivers provide unrivaled opportunity for clean energy via hydropower, but little is known about the potential impact of dam-building on the food security these rivers provide. In tropical rivers, rainfall drives a periodic flood pulse fueling fish production and delivering nutrition to more than 150 million people worldwide. Hydropower will modulate this flood pulse, thereby threatening food security. We identified variance components of the Mekong River flood pulse that predict yield in one of the largest freshwater fisheries in the world. We used these variance components to design an algorithm for a managed hydrograph to explore future yields. This algorithm mimics attributes of discharge variance that drive fishery yield: prolonged low flows followed by a short flood pulse. Designed flows increased yield by a factor of 3.7 relative to historical hydrology. Managing desired components of discharge variance will lead to greater efficiency in the Lower Mekong Basin food system.

Abstract:High-dam reservoirs can significantly affect nutrient cycling processes across the globe. However, the research community now has two contradictive views (i.e., retention versus transformation) about the impact of high-dam reservoirs on nutrient cycling due to incomplete information obtained from limited field samplings. To resolve this issue, we develop a physically-based, three-dimensional water quality model to examine the spatiotemporal distributions of biogenic elements (nitrogen and phosphorus) in high-dam reservoirs with high spatial and temporal details. We apply the model to the Xiaowan Reservoir, a representative high-dam reservoir in the Lancang River Basin. By scrutinizing the spatiotemporal distributions of biogenic elements across space and over time, we find a unique "retention-transformation-transportation" process of nitrogen and phosphorus in the high-dam reservoir, with dominant transformation occurring in the water zone before the dam during non-flood period while dominant retention occurring in the middle part of a reservoir during flood period. We further find that transformations of biogenic elements are enhanced only in low-temperature and low-oxygen environments. Our findings show solid scientific basis to resolve the contradictive views about nutrient cycling mechanisms in high-dam reservoirs, and provide important policy implications for the operation of high-dam reservoirs to achieve improved water quality while maintaining clean energy supply.

Lowland Fluvial Phosphorus Altered by Dams

Abstract:Dams affect ecosystems, but their physical link to the variations in fluvial fluxes and downstream ecological consequences are inadequately understood. After estimating the current effects of the Three Gorges project and other reservoirs upstream on the Yangtze River on the fluvial phosphorus (P) in the middle and lower Yangtze River, we further investigated the long‐term effects of dams on the fluvial regimes of P and P‐enriched sediment (PES). Simultaneously measured P distributions with sediment size (PDSS) from the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) proved that the areal density of particulate P (PP) bound on graded sediment can be measured using the surface area concentration of the total sediment. A PDSS relationship is obtained and the selective transport and long‐term sedimentation of P are simulated using a nonuniform suspended sediment model, which incorporates the PDSS formula. The computations revealed that a reservoir would significantly lower the downstream availability of P in the dry season and promote high pulses of P in summer when the reservoir is flushed as sedimentation accumulates. As a result, the P buffering and replenishing mechanism in the pristine ecosystem from upstream supplies and local re‐suspension are permanently eliminated when a regulating reservoir is built upstream. This change is irreversible if reservoir regulation continues. Changes could potentially aggravate the existing P‐limitation, decrease the water's ability to adjust nutrient/pollutant fluctuations, accumulate a greater surplus of carbon and nitrogen, and even exacerbate blooms in favorable conditions.
The Effect of Dams on Phosphorus in the Middle and Lower Yangtze River

Abstract:We investigated the effect of the Three Gorges Project and other dams on the load of phosphorus (P) to the middle and lower Yangtze River (MLY) and discussed the alteration of P on the ecosystem of the MLY. We collected data for continuous flow and sediment over the past 60 years and observed the concentrations of total P (TP) and particulate P (PP) in the pool reaches of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), both before and after the impoundment in 2003. As a result, we obtained highly positive correlations between P and sediment and revealed two changes that were caused by the impoundments: (1) the sediment load to the MLY decreases by 91% and the river becomes almost clear; and (2) the loads of TP and PP to the MLY are sequestered by 77% and 83.5% annually and 75% and 92% in dry seasons, respectively. Because P was the limiting nutrient for bioactivity in the MLY before 2003, such significant reductions, along with the many other consequences of the dams, will not only further reduce the bioavailability of P but also increase the existing high ratio of nitrogen (N) to P. Therefore, it is quite possible to alter the nutrient regime and reduce the aquatic primary productivity of the MLY. Given that many large dams with huge reservoirs are under construction or planned upstream and elsewhere, studies focused on the long-term effects of sediment and P reduction deserve a high priority for the protection of lowland rivers and aquatic ecosystems.

The upstream Lancang River basin (in Tibet) offers rich hydropower resources together with some of the most delicate freshwater fish species diversity in the world. However, a large dam construction scheme throughout the basin has threatened the fish species diversity and ecology. Our study focuses on the extent to which hydropower construction in the basin influences the river's ecological status, including the aquatic environment, fish migration, and fish spawning sites. We surveyed the water quality, fish distribution, and fish spawning sites and estimated the fish spawning capacity in the basin. Our results indicate that the water quality prior to dam construction would meet China's water standards. However, water quality would decline significantly following dam construction, exacerbating the rate of loss of 7 of the protected endemic fish species, as well as threatening the habitat of several other fish species. Our analysis shows a loss trend of fish populations and spawning capacity after damming the river. Cascade dams constructed in the upstream Lancang River basin would obstruct natural migration of fish and inundate their spawning sites, causing reproductive failure and population decline. Based on our analysis, and eco-hydraulic engineering principles, we recommend several ecological protection measures and management options in the upstream Lancang River basin, including the construction of artificial fish ladders, the implementation of ecological regulation, and a fish strategy that will reduce the negative effect of cascade dam constructions.

Impact of a large sub-tropical reservoir on the cycling of nutrients in a river

Abstract:The quantity and composition of nutrients carried by rivers play an important role in maintaining the ecosystem of downstream rivers and marginal seas. To reveal the impact of damming on the composition and flux changes of nutrients in rivers, this study conducted a detailed survey of a large sub-tropical reservoir (Xinanjiang Reservoir, XAJR) in eastern China from August 2013 to June 2014 obtaining samples at bi-monthly intervals. The thermal stratification, water quality in situ parameters, and the contents of nutrients in the water column of the river inflow, transition area, central reservoir area, and discharge water of the XAJR were analyzed in detail along the fluvial direction. The results show that the thermal stratification of the XAJR had seasonal and spatial heterogeneity. Accordingly, the pH and dissolved oxygen saturation degree in water also showed a similar stratification phenomenon. The analysis of nutrient limitation for primary productivity indicated that in different seasons, varying limiting degrees of the silicon or phosphorus were developed in different locations along the XAJR- river system. Among them, the river area and transition area were more susceptible to silicon restriction in winter, whereas phosphorus restriction mainly occurred during the warm seasons from April to October. XAJR had a retention effect on nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon, among which phosphorus was more easily retained by the reservoir. In addition, nitrogen underwent transformation processes between different forms inside the reservoir. In the reservoir, the different degrees of retention effect of nutrients also led to a significant increase in the ratio of silicon to phosphorus and nitrogen to phosphorus in the discharged water. This study confirmed that thermal stratification has important control over the contents and forms of nutrients in water. This finding provided an idea for the restoration of the fluxes and stoichiometric ratios of the nutrients in the downstream river using the reservoir's capacity for artificial regulation.

Abstract:River damming has brought great benefits to flood mitigation, energy and food production, and will continue to play a significant role in global energy supply, particularly in Asia, Africa, and South America. However, dams have extensively altered global river dynamics, including riverine connectivity, hydrological, thermal, sediment and solute regimes, and the channel morphology. These alterations have detrimental effects on the quality and quantity of fish habitat and associated impacts on aquatic life. Indeed, dams have been implicated in the decline of numerous fishes, emphasizing the need for effective conservation measures. Here, we present a global synthesis of critical issues concerning the impacts of river damming on physical fish habitats, with a particular focus on key fish species across continents. We also consider current fish conservation measures and their applicability in different contexts. Finally, we identify future research needs. The information presented herein will help support sustainable dam operation under the constraints of future climate change and human needs. River damming yields great social-economic benefits, but also causes significant eco-environmental impacts, particularly on fish. Dams block fish migration routes, alter hydrological and water temperature regimes, and modify channel morphology. These changes impact fish physical habitats and associated communities. Here, we synthesize the impacts of river damming on fish physical habitats, and review potential conservation measures that could be used to off-set or mitigate the impacts of dams on fish habitats, populations and communities. Hydro-dam - A nature-based solution or an ecological problem: The fate of the Tonlé Sap Lake

Abstract:Recent proliferation of hydro-dams was one of the nature-based solutions to meet the increasing demand for energy and food in the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMRB). While construction of these hydro-dams generated some hydropower and facilitated expansion of irrigated lands, it also significantly altered the basin-wide hydrology and subsequently impacted wetland ecosystems. Unintended adverse consequences of ecosystem services from lakes and wetlands offset the intended gains in hydroelectricity and irrigated agriculture. The trade-offs between gains in energy and food production and losses in aquatic ecosystem services were perceived to be significant but knowledge of the magnitude, spatial extent, and type of ecosystem services change is lacking and, therefore, the question whether the hydro-dam is an optimized solution or a potential ecological problem remains unanswered. In this study, as the first step to answer this question and using the Tonlé Sap Lake as an example, we quantified one of the impacts of hydro-dams on lake ecosystem's phenology in terms of open water area, a critical ecological characteristic that affects lake systems' fish production, biodiversity, and livelihoods of the local communities. We used the MODIS-NDVI time series, forecast function and the Mann-Kendall trend test method to first quantify the open water area, analyzed its changes over time, and then performed correlation analysis with climate variables to disentangle dam impacts. The results showed reduced hydro-periods, diminishing lake seasonality and a declining trend in Tonlé Sap Lake open water area over the past 15 years. These changes were insignificantly related to climatic influence during the same period. It is concluded that basin-wide hydro-dam construction and associated agricultural irrigation were deemed to be the primary cause of these ecological changes. Further analyses of changes in the lake's ecosystem services, including provision and cultural services, need to be carried out in order to have a holistic understanding of the trade-offs brought by the hydro-dam proliferation as a solution to the emerging energy and food demand in the LMRB.

Abstract:Damming rivers to generate hydropower can help mitigate the world's energy crisis and reduce the risk of global climate change; however, damming can also produce enormous negative effects on the environment and ecosystems. The mainstream Lancang-Mekong River within China has been planned as one of the thirteen state hydropower bases. To date, there have been six operational dams along the mainstream Lancang River, and the 15 remaining dams of the proposed Lancang cascade will be completed in the next decades. In this paper, we examined several crucial environmental changes and ecological responses that have resulted from the construction and operation of the existing dams of the Lancang cascade. The current literature and observational data suggest that the commissioned dams have led to a decline in the flood season water discharge and annual sediment flux within China's borders, reservoir aggradations, and water quality degradation in the reservoirs, which has negatively affected riverine aquatic biological communities and fish assemblages. In contrast, the dams have only had small unfavorable effects on downstream environments and ecosystems outside of China. Because of the potential environmental and geopolitical risks of the Lancang cascade dams, a long-term basin-wide terrestrial and aquatic monitoring program is urgently required to ensure that regional sustainable development occurs in the Iancang-Mekong River Basin. Fish biodiversity declines with dam development in the Lower Mekong Basin

Abstract:Abstract Hydropower dams are a source of renewable energy, but dam development and hydropower generation negatively affect freshwater ecosystems, biodiversity, and food security. We assess the effects of hydropower dam development on spatial–temporal changes in fish biodiversity from 2007 to 2014 in the Sekong, Sesan, and Srepok Basins—major tributaries to the Mekong River. By analyzing a 7-year fish monitoring dataset, and regressing fish abundance and biodiversity trends against cumulative number of upstream dams, we found that hydropower dams reduced fish biodiversity, including migratory, IUCN threatened and indicator species in the Sesan and Srepok Basins where most dams have been constructed. Meanwhile, fish biodiversity increased in the Sekong, the basin with the fewest dams. Fish fauna in the Sesan and Srepok Basins decreased from 60 and 29 species in 2007 to 42 and 25 species in 2014, respectively; while they increased from 33 in 2007 to 56 species in 2014 in the Sekong Basin. This is one of the first empirical studies to show reduced diversity following dam construction and fragmentation, and increased diversity in less regulated rivers in the Mekong River. Our results underscore the importance of the Sekong Basin to fish biodiversity and highlight the likely significance of all remaining free-flowing sections of the Lower Mekong Basin, including the Sekong, Cambodian Mekong, and Tonle Sap Rivers to migratory and threatened fish species. To preserve biodiversity, developing alternative renewable sources of energy or re-operating existing dams to increase power generation are recommended over constructing new hydropower dams.
