Abstract:A technique for encapsulating fluorescent organic probes in a micelle system offers an important alternative method to manufacture watersoluble organic nanoparticles (ONPs) for use in sensing Hg2+. This article reports on a study of a surfactant-free micelle-like ONPs based on a 3,6-di(2-thieny1)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (TDPP) amphiphile, (2(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)-3,6-di(2-thiophyl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo [3,4-c] pyrrole-1,4-dione (NDPP) fabricated to monitor Hg2+ in water. NDPP was synthesized through a simple one-step modification of a commercially available dye TDPP with a flexible and hydrophilic alkoxy. This study reports, for the first time, that TDPP dyes can respond reversibly, sensitively, and selectively to Hg2+ through TDPP-Hg-TDPP complexation, similar to the well-known thymine(T) Hg thymine(T) model and the accompanying molecular aggregation. Interestingly, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) confirmed that, in water, NDPP forms loose micelle-like fluorescent ONPs with a hydrohobic TDPP portion encapsulated inside. These micelle-like nanoparticles offer an ideal location for TDPP Hg complexation with a modest molecular aggregation, thereby providing both clear visual and spectroscopic signals for Hg2+ sensing. An estimated detection limit of 11 nM for Hg2+ sensing with this NDPP nanoparticle was obtained. In addition, NDPP ONPs show good water solubility and high selectivity to Hg2+ in neutral or alkalescent water. It was superior to most micelle based nanosensors, which require a complicated process in the selection or synthesis of suitable surfactants. The determinations in real samples (river water) were made and satisfactory results were achieved. This study provides a low-cost strategy for fabricating small molecule-based fluorescent nanomaterials for use in sensing Hg2+. Moreover, the NDPP nanoparticles show potential ability in Hg2+ ion adsorption and recognization of cysteine using NDPP-Hg composite particle.

Abstract:Mercury pollution in aquatic environment is becoming increasingly serious, which poses a threat to the ecological environment and human health. Traditional methods are costly and time consuming since they require sophisticated instruments and professional operation. Thus simple and on-site detection of mercury (II) ions (Hg2+) is extremely expected. In this study, we constructed a one-step lateral flow strip that can selectively detect Hg2+ in solution based on the thymine-Hg2+-thymidine (T-Hg2+-T) mismatch principle. Detect probe (poly T20) were designed to bind to compete probe (poly A20) which can compete with Hg2+ to bind detect probe, leading to the color change on the test line. Moreover, a home-made bionic E-eye system was developed as a portable in-situ detection platform to efficiently measure the Hg2+ in 10 minutes by direct photographing. Under optimized experimental conditions, the developed lateral flow strip had a detection limit of 2 ppb and could detect up to 400ppb.

Abstract:Mercury ion (Hg2+) is an extremely hazardous pollutant to humans, soil, and aquatic life. Nanozyme-based sensing approaches are promising for detecting toxic heavy metal ions. However, applying noble metal nanozymes in developing affordable and portable sensors remains largely unexplored. Herein, a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-based colorimetric sensor was established for the ultra-trace detection of Hg2+ by capitalizing the inherent peroxidase-mimetic features of AuNPs for oxidizing the colorimetric indicator 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). AuNPs of size less than 10 nm were directly prepared in aqueous media using a stimuli-responsive, poly(ethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate)-b-poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (p(PEGEMA)-b-p(DMAEMA)) block copolymer, synthesized through RAFT polymerization. The block copolymers efficiently interacted with Au3+ ions toward the formation of stable, monodispersed AuNPs without additional reducing agents or stabilizers. Using TMB, H2O2, and the AuNP colorimetric system, the concentration of Hg2+ in aqueous media was quantitatively and selectively detected over those of other common interfering metal ions. The selective detection of Hg2+ was promoted by the Au-Hg amalgamation process, which is correlated with intensity of the colorimetric response. Colorimetrically, Hg2+ was linearly measured between 10 nM and 3.5 μM and achieved a detection limit of 0.4 nM. Subsequently, an on-field naked-eye sensing strategy was also developed by integrating the colorimetric sensor on a paper analytical device with a detection limit of 3.5 nM. The efficient colorimetric sensing platform for selective and trace detection of Hg2+ is promising for determining mercury contamination in different water and biological samples.

Abstract:Mercury ion (Hg2+) is toxic and can severely damage the environment and human health. Therefore, sensitive and selective Hg2+ detection methods are needed. Here, we synthesized dendritic silica nanospheres (DSN) with central-radial porous structures and immobilized Au and Pt nanoparticles into their pores. The synthesized DSN with Au and Pt nanoparticles (AuPt@DSN) exhibited superior peroxidase-like activity, stability, and dispersibility. We found that AuPt@DSN can specifically reduce Hg2+, leading to the decreased catalytic activity of the nanozymes. Under optimal testing conditions, the AuPt@DSN material was efficiently used for the visual detection of Hg2+. The detection limit was 8.58 pM with a linear range from 0.1 nM to 10 μM. Selectivity toward Hg2+ has also been demonstrated in aqueous solutions in the presence of other metal ions. This strategy is simple to utilize and has a low cost and rapid response. The practicability was further investigated by analyzing complex water samples, which suggests its potential for mercury evaluation in environmental samples.

Portable smartphone-assisted highly sensitive detection of mercury ions based on gold nanoparticle-modified NH2-UiO-66 metal-organic framework

Abstract:A novel portable smartphone-assisted colorimetric method was reported for the determination of Hg2+ with good analytical performance. A Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework functionalized with amino groups (NH2-UiO-66) has been adopted as a supporting platform to anchor gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), avoiding the migration and aggregation of AuNPs. With the addition of Hg2+, the formation of gold amalgam proved possible to enhance peroxidase-like activity of the composite (AuNPs/NH2-UiO-66), accelerating the oxidization of zymolyte 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). In the meantime, the color of the reaction solution turned a vivid blue, and the red, green, and blue (RGB) values of the solution color changed accordingly. On account of this strategy, the quantitative detection of Hg2+ could be achieved. After the optimization of the experiment conditions, the average color intensity (Ic) resulting from RGB values was linear related to the concentration of Hg2+ from 10 to 100 nM, accompanied with a detection limit (LOD) down to 5.4 nM calculated by 3σ/S. The successful application of the designed method has been promoted to detect Hg2+ in some water samples, displaying a great potential in practical application. Furthermore, the use of a smartphone made our proposed method simple and accurate, and thus puts forward a possible way for in situ and real-time monitoring.

Abstract:The nanozyme-based strategy is currently one of the frontiers in the detection of toxic heavy metal ions. However, the utilization of noble metal free nanozymes to construct an economically and environmentally sustainable methodology remains largely unknown. Here, chitosan-functionalized molybdenum(IV) selenide nanosheets (CS-MoSe2 NS), greenly synthesized by an ionic liquid-assisted grinding method, were exploited for the colorimetric sensing of mercury ions (Hg2+). The sensing principle was based on the activating effect of Hg2+ on CS-MoSe2 NS nanozyme activities, triggered by the in situ reduction of chitosan-captured Hg2+ ions on a MoSe2 NS surface. Using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a colorimetric indicator, the concentrations of activator-like Hg2+ ions could be quantitatively and selectively monitored, reaching a limit of detection of 3.5 nM with the ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer. In addition, the integration system of CS-MoSe2 NS with a smartphone achieved a portable detection limit as low as 8.4 nM Hg2+ within 15 min and showed high specificity and anti-interfering ability over other ions and great practicability in real water and serum samples. The eco-friendly properties of such sensing system were also confirmed. This work emphasizes the rational portable assembly of biocompatible nanozymes like CS-MoSe2 NS for the field detection of Hg2+ in food, biological, and environmental samples.
Carbon nanoparticle-based ratiometric fluorescent sensor for detecting mercury ions in aqueous media and living cells

Abstract:A novel nanohybrid ratiometric fluorescence sensor is developed for selective detection of mercuric ions (Hg(2+)), and the application has been successfully demonstrated in HEPES buffer solution, lake water, and living cells. The sensor comprises water-soluble fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) and Rhodamine B (RhB) and exhibits their corresponding dual emissions peaked at 437 and 575 nm, respectively, under a single excitation wavelength (350 nm). The photoluminescence of the CNPs in the nanohybrid system can be completely quenched by Hg(2+) through effective electron or energy transfer process due to synergetic strong electrostatic interaction and metal-ligand coordination between the surface functional group of CNPs and Hg(2+), while that of the RhB remains constant. This results in an obviously distinguishable fluorescence color variation (from violet to orange) of the nanohybrid solution. This novel sensor can effectively identify Hg(2+) from other metal ions with relatively low background interference even in a complex system such as lake water. The detection limit of this method is as low as 42 nM. Furthermore, the sensing technique is applicable to detect Hg(2+) in living cells.

Abstract:A multiple signal amplification strategy was designed for an ultrasensitive competitive immunoassay for Hg2+. This strategy was achieved using graphene conjugated with a large number of CdSe quantum dots to enhance the basal signal and enormous horseradish peroxidase (HRP) labeled with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to consume the coreactant H2O2 generated in situ. The immunosensor was constructed by immobilization of coating antigen on poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) graphene CdSe composites (PDDA-GN-CdSe), and a strong electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal was obtained. When the immunosensor was immersed in antibody AuNPs HRP composites, the ECL signal greatly decreased, which was ascribed to the bound enzyme on the electrode surface. The self-produced coreactant H2O2 was consumed by o-phenylenediamine in the presence of enzyme, effectively decreasing the ECL intensity from the quantum dots. The Hg2+ in solution and the corresponding coating antigen competed for the limited antibody, and thus, the ECL intensity was linearly dependent on the logarithm of the mercury(II) concentration from 0.2 to 1000 ng mL(-1) with a detection limit of 0.06 ng mL(-1). The immunoassay exhibited good stability and accuracy and acceptable reproducibility, indicating that it provides a promising approach for the detection of trace mercury and other small molecular compounds in environmental samples.
Colorimetric sensors constructed with one dimensional PtNi nanowire and Pt nanowire nanozymes for Hg2+ detection

Abstract:Background: In recent years, environmental pollution has attracted widespread global attention. Among them, environmental problems caused by heavy metal pollution pose a serious threat to human health and ecosystems. Mercury is a common heavy metal pollutant with high toxicity and wide distribution. Excessive intake of Hg2+ can cause permanent and severe damage to the nervous system, respiratory system, and kidneys in the human body. Therefore, developing both accurate and fast detection methods for Hg2+ is of great significance. Results: A sensitive Hg2+ colorimetric sensor is designed based on PtNi nanowires (NWs) and Pt NWs with peroxidase-mimetic activity. PtNi NWs and Pt NWs catalyze the reaction of 3,3', 5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to produce blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB). The specific interaction of Pt-Hg significantly inhibits the peroxidase-mimetic activity of PtNi NW and Pt NW nanozymes, resulting in a lighter blue color. It is worth noting that compared with specific activity (SA) of Pt NWs (3.31 U/mg), PtNi NWs own superior SA (10.43 U/mg), which inevitably leads to a wider linear range of Hg2+ analysis (1 nM-200 μM) and a lower detection limit (0.6748 nM) for PtNi NWs-based colorimetric sensor, versus linear range (4 nM-5 μM) and LOD of 1.198 nM for Pt NWs-based colorimetric sensor, which are far below the Hg2+ threshold (10 nM) for drinking water set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Significance: The two nanozyme colorimetric sensors have been successfully used for the evaluation of Hg2+ in complex river water and tap water. Due to the advantages of simple operation, fast response, and high sensitivity, colorimetric sensors have broad application prospects in environmental monitoring.
Are Male Disaster Workers With Vietnam Military Service at Greater Risk for PTSD Than Peers Without Combat History?

Abstract:This study examined whether male disaster workers with Vietnam service histories were at risk for posttraumatic stress disorder when compared with colleagues following duties at Ground Zero. The study compared participants from ongoing psychiatric screening of disaster workers: those with Vietnam service (Vietnam veteran; N = 125), those without trauma history (no trauma; N = 116); and those with childhood physical abuse but no combat history (physical abuse; N = 57). ANOVA indicated the trauma groups differed significantly in clinician-rated posttraumatic stress disorder severity (p < 0.005). However, post hoc analyses revealed the Vietnam veteran group did not differ significantly from the no trauma group; both had significantly lower severity compared with the physical abuse group. It should be noted that veterans in this sample, unlike in many studies, were in the workforce. Research with different veteran groups is warranted to clarify further the relation of combat experience and symptoms in disaster workers.

Abstract:A very sensitive and selective colorimetric biosensor for the measurement of mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) in environmental samples has been developed using functionalized gold nanoparticles with bromelain enzyme (brn-AuNPs). This work has shown that Hg 2+ measurement based on spectrophotometer and digital image analysis is a very innovative and successful method for providing an effective preliminary system and has promise for the future of water quality biomonitoring. Response Surface Methodology (RSM), a Box–Behnken design-based technique, was used to identify the optimum levels of functionalization of bromelain to AuNPs. The created model's validity was confirmed, and statistical analysis revealed that the ideal functionalize conditions were 1 mM of AuNPs, functionalize with 0.59 mM bromelain concentration on 14 °C temperature and 72 h incubation time. The lowest colorimetric detection concentration (LOD) of brn-AuNPs of Hg 2+ was 0.0092 ppm and 0.011 ppm for spectrophotometer and digital image analysis. As shown, digital image analysis had advantages based on the LOD result comparable to UV–VIS spectrophotometer. The practical application of the brn-AuNPs sensing was proven with mercury determination in water samples. The present study developed a robust sensor, which successfully implemented in a compact portable sensor kit, turning this sensor into a very potent tool for the development water quality biomonitoring system of Hg 2+ application.

Abstract:A novel ratiometric fluorescence probe based on nitrogen-doped blue carbon dots (NCDs) and red gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) for mercuric ion (Hg2+) has been prepared and characterized. A user friendly fluorescent test paper based sensor combined with smartphone was fabricated for rapid visual and quantitative detection. Hg 2+ can specifically bind to Au + on the surface of Au NCs, leading to the quench of red fluorescence while the fluorescence intensity of the NCDs with blue fluorescence remained unchanged as a internal standard signal. The implement of paper-based sensor address some common drawback in analytical process such as the detection time, analysis cost. In a further demonstration, a homemade detection device with smartphone was used to qualify the Hg 2+ . After adding different concentration of Hg 2+ , red, purple, and blue colors were obtained on the detection zones of the fluorescent test paper. The Android App Color Grab was used to identify the red, green and blue (RGB) values of fluorescent color. The rapid visual and quantitative detection of Hg 2+ was accomplished with the detection limit of 2.7 nM for fluorescence, 25 nM for smartphone and 32 nM for paper strip. The developed multi-mode detection platform was successfully applied to the detection of mercury ions in water samples with acceptable recoveries. The NCDs and Au NCs probe facilitate the one-site environmental monitoring for Hg 2+ with “naked-eye” and smartphone.

Abstract:Mercury is one of the heavy metal ions that are released to the environment through various means including anthropogenic pollution. A very low dose of mercury in environmental systems such as water can lead to debilitating effects on the health of humans and animals, if consumed untreated. To reduce this effect, it is critical to develop a simple, non-expensive, and non-sophisticated detection and monitoring system of mercury. Here, we report a simple colorimetric method based on the peroxidase-like activity of AuNPs/ZnO/Fe 3 O 4 . Different characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) were used to investigate the successful formation of these composites. The formation of AuNPs was assisted by ZnO. The low Km value (0.7368 mM) obtained from the kinetic study of the catalytic oxidation of 3, 3′, 5, 5′ − Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) showed strong affinity of TMB to AgNPs/ZnO/Fe 3 O 4 . The peroxidase-like activity of AgNPs/ZnO/Fe 3 O 4 , was further enhanced in the presence of mercury (II). The absorption intensities of the resulting oxidized TMB (oxTMB) increased linearly in a concentration range of 0.05 – 20 μM. The method also exhibited high selectivity to mercury (II) ions. The limit of detection (LOD) in this linear range was found to be 28.1 nM. The feasibility of the method in determination of mercury (II) ions from real samples was confirmed from high recovery rates in tap water samples. The method shows a great potential for determination of mercury (II) ions in environmental samples.

Abstract:As the toxic mercury ions (Hg 2+ ) widely present in rivers and soil threaten human health, it is essential to develop various methods to detect and monitor Hg 2+ . At present, increasing numbers of nanozymes with peroxidase-like or oxidase-like activity have been exploited to develop the colorimetric detection of Hg 2+ . However, research on the electrochemical detection of Hg 2+ by nanozymes is still rarely reported. Herein, on the basis of our previous research on palladium-based nanozymes with oxidase-like activity, graphene and palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) were electrochemically deposited on the electrode surface. Then, the enhancement effect of palladium–mercury binding on the oxidase-like activity of electrodeposited PdNPs was studied for the first time. Moreover, it was found that only Hg 2+ can enhance the catalytic oxidation of TMB compared to other common metal ions. Based on these properties, a highly selective, convenient and eco-friendly electrochemical Hg 2+ sensor has been successfully developed, which has a wide linear range of 1.0–40 μM and a low LOD of 0.33 μM. Additionally, the proposed method shows acceptable recovery in real sample tests, indicating promising prospects in the field test and water pollution monitoring of Hg 2+ .

The specific binding of Hg 2+ (thymine-Hg 2+ -thymine) with thiolated DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) via Au–S bonds increases the spatial hindrance of the AuNP surface, resulting in a weakened catalytic ability of AuNPs to catalyze the reaction between p-nitrophenol and NaBH 4 . Therefore, the color change time (CCT) of the solution from yellow to colorless becomes longer. Based on the kinetic curve of absorbance over time measured by a UV spectrometer, the level of Hg 2+ in aqueous solutions can be easily quantified. A linear relationship between CCT and Hg 2+ concentration was obtained in the 10–600-nM range with a detection limit of 0.20 nM, which is much lower than the limit value (10 nM) defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency for Hg 2+ in drinking water. The excellent sensitivity comes from CCT as the signal output of the probe, rather than the absorbance or wavelength change used in traditional colorimetric probes as the signal output.
Colorimetric and SERS Dual-Mode Sensing of Mercury (II) Based on Controllable Etching of Au@Ag Core/shell Nanoparticles

Abstract:Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a bio-accumulative and toxic heavy metal, which has caused significant damage to our health. It is vital to establish a method for the determination of Hg2+. Here, a new strategy for colorimetric/SERS dual-mode determination of Hg2+ was proposed based on controllable etching Au@Ag NPs. The silver shells could be etched by S2O32- causing the orange colloidal solution to turn into brick red. However, after Hg2+ is added, the etching effect is suppressed due to the reaction between Hg2+ and S2O32- to form an insoluble substance HgS. As a result, the UV-vis absorption at 394 nm and Raman intensity of R6 G increase with a silver shellless etched by S2O32-. About the colorimetric method, the limit of detection was 2 mu M and 0.2 mu M through the naked eye and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively. Moreover, the SERS method possesses a linear regression for the concentration of Hg2+ (0.1 nM(-1) mu M), and the LOD was 0.1 nM. Furthermore, the sensing strategy has been used to determine Hg2+ in traditional Chinese medicine and real water samples. The selectivity and practicability studies indicate that our method has excellent specificity and sensitivity. Thus, this strategy is suitable for on-site fast detecting of Hg2+.
Achieving smartphone-based colorimetric assay for Hg2+ with a bimetallic site strategy based on Hg2+-triggered oxidase-like catalytic activity of NSC/Co6Ni3S8 nanocomposite

Abstract:Modulation of the nanozyme's catalytic activity is crucial for its real applications in detecting target analytes. Herein, we fabricated the nanocomposite (NSC/Co6Ni3S8) of N, S co-doped carbon and Co6Ni3S8 by a facile sol-gel approach. Compared to NSC/Ni9S8, NSC/Co6Ni3S8 with bimetallic active sites displayed better enzyme-mimetic activity. This nanocomposite could catalyze O2 to form ·O2- and oxidize colorless 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into blue oxTMB. The other two free radicals (h+ and ·OH) played minor roles during the catalytic reaction. Hg2+ could integrate with S2- to form HgS and the surface charges of O2 were transferred to Hg2+ to promote O2 adsorption. DFT theoretical calculations highlight that the main reasons for the enhancing effect of Hg2+ on color development results from electron transfer and increased adsorption energy of O2 molecules onto the surface of NSC/Co6Ni3S8. By employing the oxidase-like activity of NSC/Co6Ni3S8 and Hg2+-triggered promoting effect, a colorimetric sensing platform was established for Hg2+ assay with a linear range of 10-200 μg/L and detection limit of 3 μg/L. Through integration with a smartphone-based APP "Thing Identify" software, a visual colorimetric assay for Hg2+ was constructed with a detection limit of 5 μg/L. Compared to the data detected by the mercury vapor meter, the relative recoveries of 92.4-108.1% evidenced the higher accuracy of this smartphone-based visual detection. Overall, the NSC/Co6Ni3S8-based colorimetric assay is convenient, rapid, and visual, and can be applied for routine monitoring of Hg2+ in real-world waters under outdoor conditions.

Abstract:Mercury ion (Hg 2+ ) detection plays a crucial role in safeguarding the environment and protecting human health. In this study, we developed a microfluidic biosensing platform that utilizes a phosphorothioate-RNA (PS-RNA) probe and gold-coated magnetic nanoparticles to quantify Hg 2+ visually. The PS-RNA probe was linked to gold-coated magnetic nanoparticles via Au–S interaction and biotin–avidin interaction and then combined with polystyrene microspheres to form a self-assembled structure called a magnetic bead-AuNP-probe-polystyrene (MAPP) bead. We designed and fabricated a microfluidic chip that contained only a magnetic separator and a particle trap. The presence of Hg 2+ cut the PS-RNA probe, leading to the separation of magnetic beads and polystyrene microspheres. The MAPP was removed by the magnetic separator, while the cut polystyrene microspheres flowed along the channel and accumulated in the particle trap, forming a long visible strip. The length of the polystyrene microsphere strip was proportional to the Hg 2+ concentration. The microfluidic biosensing platform exhibited high sensitivity and specificity for Hg 2+ detection, with a detection limit of 21.9 nM. By integrating the microfluidic magnetic manipulation system with a sensitive nucleic acid probe, we developed an automated and visual biosensor that is a valuable reference for the on-site visual detection of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:Mercury contamination causes a wide range of symptoms in organisms, and affects human brain, kidneys and nervous system in particular. Most food sources high in mercury come from saltwater species like fish and other sea animals. Recently, fluorescent biofilm, electrostatic spinning film, and hydrogel were used for the potable detection of mercury. However, the photostability of the fluorescent probe in the film and the challenge of solid food sample analysis are the main issues to be addressed. In this work, sodium alginate hydrogel (SA) was used for developing a hydrogel sensor in combination with the phenanthroline modified-tetraphenylethylene (TPE) derivatives (DTPEP). Based on its aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic and high specificity to mercury, the AIE hydrogel mercury sensor was coated on different carriers, such as gloves, sticky notes, etc., as flexible sensors for portable and rapid field testing of mercury contamination. The visualization results were analyzed using the greyscale-based Android software "Detect" to Quantification of Hg 2+ . The detection limit could be as low as 0.06 μM with the detection time within 15 min. The gray value was linearly related to the concentration of Hg 2+ , ranging from (0–2 μM). The flexible Visual and rapid sensing systems have not only great potential applications in the detection of mercury in food samples but are also suitable for the detection of environmental and food contaminants.
