Abstract:In this work, an efficient and accurate lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is developed based on phase-field theory to study multiphase flows involving N ( N ≥ 2) immiscible incompressible fluids. In this model, a reduction-consistent physical formulation including a volume-fraction-dependent mobility in the Cahn–Hilliard (C–H) equations is adopted. Usually, the effect of cross-diffusion makes it difficult to solve such equations directly with the classic LB method. To avoid requiring a special treatment on the cross-diffusion terms of the chemical potential gradients, the proposed LB model introduces some non-diagonal collision operators. In addition, the proper auxiliary source terms are constructed to ensure the correct macroscopic equations. Through a direct Taylor expansion, the C–H equations are recovered from the present LB model. Finally, four classical problems including static droplets, the spreading of a liquid lens between two phases, the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, and the dynamics of droplets in a four-phase system are used to demonstrate the capability of the LB model. The numerical results show that the present model satisfies the reduction-consistent property and produces physically accurate results.

Abstract:We exposed pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) to electric (E) and magnetic (B) fields at strengths of 3 kV/m and 0.1 G, 10 kV/m and 0.3 G, and 30 kV/m and 0.9 G for three 21 day segments. These three exposure segments were preceded and followed by 21 day sham exposure segments. Additional animals received only sham exposure for five 21 day segments. Detailed description of the exposure chamber and field generation apparatus is given. We evaluated measures of animal well-being, including weight, blood chemistry, blood cell counts, and performance on a simple motor task, and performed postmortem examinations. Reliable and consistent results were obtained throughout data collection. None of the measures evaluated was significantly affected by E- and B-field exposures. Data obtained during actual exposure segments were not distinguishable from those obtained during the initial and final sham exposure segments, nor were they different from data obtained from the sham-exposed animals. Thus, field exposure had no apparent effects on general health or performance.

Abstract:In this paper a generalized conservative phase field-lattice Boltzmann model is proposed for immiscible incompressible flows with any number of components. In this phase field model, the each phase field variable satisfies a generalized eikonal equation and the volume fraction constraint. By introducing a quadratic functional, the dynamics of phase field variables can be treated as a gradient flow method. The phase field equations are reformulated based on the mass conservative law and the reduction-consistency conditions. Moreover, based on the generalized free energy functional, a family of generalized continuous surface tension force formulations is deduced by using the virtual work method. A lattice Boltzmann model (LBM) is developed to solve the generalized conservative phase field equations and the hydrodynamics equations. In the numerical simulation section, the motion of circular interfaces and Poiseuille flow with four phases are simulated first. The convergence rate and reduction-consistent of present model for the phase field equations are validated. The computational accuracy of present model for the hydrodynamics equations is also validated. Then serval two-dimensional (2D) examples with pairwise surface tension effect, including the droplets immersed in another fluid with four fluid phases, spreading of liquid lenses and spinodal decomposition with four fluid phases, are simulated. The obtained numerical results are in good agreement with the analytical solutions. Four continuous surface tension force formulations are also comparative studied. Abstract:In this paper, we develop a three-dimensional multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method (MRT-LBM) based on a set of non-orthogonal basis vectors. Compared with the classical MRT-LBM based on a set of orthogonal basis vectors, the present non-orthogonal MRT-LBM simplifies the transformation between the discrete velocity space and the moment space, and exhibits better portability across different lattices. The proposed method is then extended to multiphase flows at large density ratio with tunable surface tension, and its numerical stability and accuracy are well demonstrated by some benchmark cases. Using the proposed method, a practical case of a fuel droplet impacting on a dry surface at high Reynolds and Weber numbers is simulated and the evolution of the spreading film diameter agrees well with the experimental data. Furthermore, another realistic case of a droplet impacting on a super-hydrophobic wall with a cylindrical obstacle is reproduced, which confirms the experimental finding of Liu \textit{et al.} [``Symmetry breaking in drop bouncing on curved surfaces," Nature communications 6, 10034 (2015)] that the contact time is minimized when the cylinder radius is comparable with the droplet cylinder.

Abstract:In this work, a phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann method with reduced spurious velocity is developed for axisymmetric incompressible two-phase flows. Two sets of lattice Boltzmann equations with multiple-relaxation-time collision operators are used to, respectively, recover the conservative Allen–Cahn equation for interface capturing and the hydrodynamic equations. To reduce the spurious velocity, a novel correction term is introduced into the hydrodynamic lattice Boltzmann equation so that the leading truncation error related to the third derivatives of pressure can be partially removed. Simultaneously, the radius-weighted mirror symmetric boundary is applied to the axis of symmetry because all the moments of the distribution functions are proportional to the radial coordinate. Furthermore, the bulk viscosity is able to be changed independent of the shear viscosity through redefining the source term. A series of classical numerical experiments, including stationary droplet, oscillation of an elliptical droplet, bubble rising, drop splashing, have been conducted to test the performance of the proposed model. Numerical results agree well with the analytical solution and published data in literature, which demonstrates the improved accuracy and numerical stability.

Abstract:In this paper, a fractional step lattice Boltzmann method is proposed to model two-phase flows with large density differences by solving Cahn-Hilliard phase-field equation and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations.In order to maintain a hyperbolic tangent property of the interface profile and conserve the volume, an interfacial profile correction term and a flux correction term are added into the original Cahn-Hilliard equation respectively. By using a fractional step scheme, the modified Cahn-Hilliard equation is split into two sub-equations. One is solved in the framework of lattice Boltzmann equation method. The other is solved by the finite difference method. Compared with the previous lattice Boltzmann methods, the proposed method is able to maintain the order parameter within a physically meaningful range, which is conductive to track the interface accurately. In addition, the multi-relaxation-time collision model and a high-order compact selective filter operation are employed to enhance the numerical stability. The proposed method can simulate two-phase fluid flows with the density ratio up to $1000$. In order to validate the accuracy and capability of the method, several benchmark problems, including single vortex deform of a circle, translation of a drop, Laplace-Young law, capillary wave and rising bubble with large density ratios, are presented. The results are in good agreement with the analytical solutions and the data in the literature for the investigated benchmarks.

Abstract:With the aim of efficiently simulating multiphase flows with complex interfaces and extremely large density ratios, we propose a simplified phase-field lattice Boltzmann method (SPFLBM). In this method, the recently developed simplified multiphase lattice Boltzmann method (SMLBM) that reflects the direct and explicit evolution of the macroscopic variables within the lattice Boltzmann framework is utilized as the basic flow solver. The conservative Allen-Chan equation is chosen as the target equation for interface tracking and is resolved by the simplified lattice Boltzmann method. Compared with the conventional lattice Boltzmann model, the SPFLBM consumes less virtual memory and allows direct implementation of physical boundary conditions. Meanwhile, the SPFLBM not only inherits the capability of describing microscopic interactions from the standard lattice Boltzmann method, but also enjoys good numerical stability from the reconstruction strategy in SMLBM. Several two-dimensional numerical examples are given to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method for multiphase flow simulations. Results show that the SPFLBM can easily handle complex interface deformation, even in extreme cases where the density ratios are in the order of O (10 5 ). In the meantime, the proposed method has nice conservation capability, which allows the recovery of subtle multiphase flow phenomena such as the entrapped small bubbles, separation to the splashing fingers, and formation of satellite droplets.

Abstract:This paper proposes a simple and accurate lattice Boltzmann model for simulating thermocapillary flows, which is able to deal with thermophysical parameters contrasts. In this model, two lattice Boltzmann equations are utilized to solve the conservative Allen-Cahn equation and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, while another lattice Boltzmann equation is used for solving the temperature field, where the collision term is delicately designed such that the influence of the thermophysical parameters contrasts is incorporated. In contrast to previous lattice Boltzmann model for thermocapillary flows, the most distinct feature of the current model is that the forcing term used in the present thermal lattice Boltzmann equation is not needed to calculate space derivatives of the heat capacitance or the order parameter, making the scheme much simpler and also possible to retain the main merits of the lattice Boltzmann method. The developed model is firstly validated by considering the thermocapillary flows in a heated microchannel with two superimposed planar fluids. It is then used to simulate thermocapillary migration of a two-dimensional deformable droplet, and its accuracy is once again consistent with the theoretical prediction when the Marangoni number approaches zero. Finally, we numerically study the motion of two recalcitrant bubbles in a two-dimensional channel where the relationship between surface tension and temperature is assumed to be a parabolic function. It is found that owing to the competing between the inertia and thermal effects, the bubbles are able to move against the liquid's bulk motion and towards areas with low surface tension.

A consistent and conservative diffuse-domain lattice Boltzmann method for multiphase flows in complex geometries

Abstract:Modeling and simulation of multiphase flows in complex geomerties are challenging due to the complexity in describing the interface topology changes among different phases and the difficulty in implementing the boundary conditions on the irregular solid surface. In this work, we first developed a diffuse-domain (DD) based phase-field model for multiphase flows in complex geometries. In this model, the irregular fluid region is embedded into a larger and regular domain by introducing a smooth characteristic function. Then, the reduction-consistent and conservative phase-field equation for the multiphase field and the consistent and conservative Navier-Stokes equations for the flow field are reformulated as the diffuse-domain based consistent and conservative (DD-CC) equations where some additional source terms are added to reflect the effects of boundary conditions. In this case, there is no need to directly treat the complex boundary conditions on the irregular solid surface, and additionally, based on a matched asymptotic analysis, it is also shown that the DD-CC equations can converge to the original governing equations as the interface width parameter tends to zero. Furthermore, to solve the DD-CC equations, we proposed a novel and simple lattice Boltzmann (LB) method with a Hermite-moment-based collision matrix which can not only keep consistent and conservation properties, but also improve the numerical stability with a flexible parameter. With the help of the direct Taylor expansion, the macroscopic DD-CC equations can be recovered correctly from the present LB method. Finally, to test the capacity of LB method, several benchmarks and complex problems are considered, and the numerical results show that the present LB method is accurate and efficient for the multiphase flows in complex geomerties.

Abstract:A novel lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed to study the gas and liquid two-phase flows with large density and viscosity ratios. In the model, both the gas and liquid phases are considered as viscous incompressible fluids, which are governed separately by the two-relaxation-time LB equations. They are coupled by a momentum exchange method at the interface. The interaction between the gas and liquid phases is explicitly described and naturally involved in the model. The interfacial conditions in the model are validated by the benchmarks of the layered Poiseuille flow and the Laplace law. The feasibility of combining this model with the bubble model and the wetting scheme is proven through transient flow problems of single bubble rising and capillary intrusion. The validity of this model is confirmed by more complex flows including solid–liquid–gas coupling and droplet breaking problems by simulating shearing a droplet on a substrate and a droplet falling on a liquid film. The results demonstrate that the present model can be used to describe both the gas and the liquid flows. This work provides a solution to model the simulation of the dynamical behaviors of multi-phase flows.

Abstract:In this study, a conservative phase-field lattice Boltzmann model is examined for simulating immiscible two-phase flows with large density and viscosity ratios. This model is built upon the Allen–Cahn equation, incorporating a filtered collision operator and high-order corrections in the equilibrium distribution functions. The numerical model is also integrated with the volumetric boundary scheme and the immersed boundary method to achieve various stationary and moving boundary conditions on arbitrary geometries for different application scenarios. A comprehensive evaluation of this phase-field solver is conducted through a range of academic and industrial cases. First, droplet splashing cases at different Reynolds numbers are studied. The phase-field LB model effectively captures the surface wave motion and splashing of the droplet, although some smearing of small structures is observed due to the diffused interface property of the numerical model. Second, a tuned liquid damper is simulated, accurately capturing sloshing forces on solid walls. In the simulation of a dam-breaking case, predicted gauge pressure and free-surface elevation time histories compare well with experimental data. Lastly, a gearbox case under dip lubrication is simulated, with both the gearbox churning loss and oil distribution being well predicted across a range of rotating speeds. The validation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the present phase-field lattice Boltzmann model in simulating immiscible two-phase flows with large and realistic density and viscosity ratios. The strengths, limitations, and weaknesses of the conservative phase-field LB model are discussed, and suggestions for the development and application of this numerical model are provided.

Abstract:In this work a phase field-lattice Boltzmann model for incompressible two-phase flows is presented. In this model, the interface tracking equation is a linear combination of the local and nonlocal Allen-Cahn equations. We also propose a multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann model for solving the hybrid Allen-Cahn equation. The second-order convergence rate of the present model in space is validated by simulating the diagonal translation of circular interface. Three other numerical tests, including static bubble immersed in another fluid, bubble rising under gravity, and droplet splashing on a thin liquid film, are simulated to verify the performance of the present model in reducing the numerical dispersion. The numerical results indicate that the order parameter fluctuation can be reduced by one order of magnitude in bulk region.

Abstract:In the present study, a robust fractional-step lattice Boltzmann (FSLB) method is proposed to simulate the mass transfer phenomenon in incompressible multiphase flows with complex interfacial behavior and large density contrast. The previous simplified lattice Boltzmann method recovers the continuity equation in first-order accuracy and reconstructs the corrector step by directly applying the complex central difference scheme on the macroscopic variables. However, the present FSLB method employs the Chapman-Enskog expansion analysis to reconstruct the convection and diffusion terms of the macroscopic governing equations, and uses the equilibrium and non-equilibrium distribution functions to establish the predictor-corrector step. The intermediate variables are predicted by the equilibrium distribution functions without the consideration of the source terms, and then the physical variables are corrected by the non-equilibrium distribution functions and the source terms without the evolution of the distribution functions. The reconstructed governing equations in both the predictor and corrector steps can be recovered into fully second-order accuracy through the C-E expansion analysis and the Taylor series expansion analysis. The present FSLB method inherits the excellent performance of kinetic theory from the conventional LB method and the good numerical stability from the matured fractional-step method, which is validated by several benchmark problems, such as Laplace law, bubble merging, interfacial deformation under a magnetic field, Rayleigh-Taylor instability at Reynolds number of 3000, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability at Reynolds number of 5000, and bubble rising at density ratio of 1000. A good agreement between the present numerical results with the published numerical data verifies the capability and reliability of the present FSLB method to handle the multiphase problems with complex interfacial behavior and large density contrast.

Abstract:This study proposes a numerical model for particulate three-phase flow in microchannels based on multiphase lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The model combines the color-gradient method to track the immiscible fluid-fluid interface and the two-fluid model (TFM) to describe particle-particle and particle-fluid interactions, which can efficiently simulate transport and displacement processes involving large amounts of particles. A mixture-rheology TFM algorithm is proposed by introducing a mixture phase with rheology properties obtained from experiments instead of the conventional TFM particle phase with artificial viscosity models. Multi-relaxation-time (MRT) collision operator and GPU computing are adopted to enhance the numerical stability and efficiency. Various theoretical benchmarks for particle transport and two-phase flow are performed respectively to verify the accuracy of the proposed model. Exceptional consistency between results from particulate three-phase flow simulation and microfluidic experiments further confirms the reliability of our model, especially in capturing the inertial lagging and accumulation phenomena under multiphase and porous flow conditions. The proposed numerical framework will benefit our understanding of multiphase displacement with microgels in microchannels with complex geometries.
Lattice Boltzmann modeling of three-phase incompressible flows

Abstract:In this paper, based on multicomponent phase-field theory we intend to develop an efficient lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for simulating three-phase incompressible flows. In this model, two LB equations are used to capture the interfaces among three different fluids, and another LB equation is adopted to solve the flow field, where a new distribution function for the forcing term is delicately designed. Different from previous multiphase LB models, the interfacial force is not used in the computation of fluid velocity, which is more reasonable from the perspective of the multiscale analysis. As a result, the computation of fluid velocity can be much simpler. Through the Chapman-Enskog analysis, it is shown that the present model can recover exactly the physical formulations for the three-phase system. Numerical simulations of extensive examples including two circular interfaces, ternary spinodal decomposition, spreading of a liquid lens, and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability are conducted to test the model. It is found that the present model can capture accurate interfaces among three different fluids, which is attributed to its algebraical and dynamical consistency properties with the two-component model. Furthermore, the numerical results of three-phase flows agree well with the theoretical results or some available data, which demonstrates that the present LB model is a reliable and efficient method for simulating three-phase flow problems.
A well-balanced lattice Boltzmann model for binary fluids based on the incompressible phase-field theory

Abstract:Spurious velocities arising from the imperfect offset of the undesired term at the discrete level are frequently observed in numerical simulations of equilibrium multiphase flow systems using the lattice Boltzmann equation (LBE) method. To capture the physical equilibrium state of two-phase fluid systems and eliminate spurious velocities, a well-balanced LBE model based on the incompressible phase-field theory is developed. In this model, the equilibrium distribution function for the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation is designed by treating the convection term as a source to avoid the introduction of undesired terms, enabling achievement of possible discrete force balance. Furthermore, this approach allows for the attainment of a divergence-free velocity field, effectively mitigating the impact of artificial compression effects and enhancing numerical stability. Numerical tests, including a flat interface problem, a stationary droplet, and the coalescence of two droplets, demonstrate the well-balanced properties and improvements in the stability of the present model.

Abstract:In this work, we develop a phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann (LB) method for a two-scalar model of the two-phase flows with interfacial mass/heat transfer. Through the Chapman-Enskog analysis, we show that the present LB method can correctly recover the governing equations for phase field, flow field and concentration/temperature field. In particular, to derive the two-scalar equations for the mass/heat transfer, we propose a new LB model with an auxiliary source distribution function to describe the extra flux terms, and the discretizations of some derivative terms can be avoided. The accuracy and efficiency of the present method is also tested through several benchmark problems, and the influence of mass/heat transfer on the fluid viscosity is further considered by introducing an exponential relation. The numerical results show that the present LB method is suitable for the two-phase flows with interfacial mass/heat transfer.
